I think a good run from Rogers or Kvapil this weekend could spell the end for Ryan Truex. Apparently there's a bit of a rift between him and Ron Devine, and that's why he's sitting out this weekends event. If either driver shows competency, Truex might find himself sitting on the sidelines for the rest of the season. Maybe if Corey Lajoie puts up some sort of crazy, top-20 unthinkable run, Petty will boot Dakota Armstrong from the 43 and run him for the whole NNS (Xfinity now, I guess) season. Or maybe...put him in the 9?! That's a pipe dream, though... Also, how about our former start and park aficionado Curtis Key entering the cup ranks next year? He gets a lot of good grace from you guys for only S&Ping the 46 to run the 40...but remember, he used to park FOUR CARS AT TIMES for Reed Sorensen or Chase Miller to run full races. But anyhow, who do you think will drive the new car? Has Matt DiBenedetto done enough to warrant a move to the cup series? Or maybe they'll go with one of their old pals Sorensen or Josh Wise. What do y'all speculate? 12. jabber1990 posted: 09.19.2014 - 8:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Maybe if Corey Lajoie puts up some sort of crazy, top-20 unthinkable run, Petty will boot Dakota Armstrong from the 43 and run him for the whole NNS (Xfinity now, I guess) season. He finished runner up at Dover in the NNS race in 2012 driving for JGR. The thing is now Truex is a developmental driver for RPM so I'm sure he'd rather be driving full time in the NNS rather than struggle to make a race in Cup. 14. I don't know where you got that information, but it isn't correct. However, Penske does run more aggressive engine setups, which they can do after they get their engines, but they get their engines from the same place Roush, Richard Petty Motorsports, Front Row Motorsports, and the Wood Brothers get their engines. Penske's just more aggressive than the other teams are, which is why they get more speed, but also have more engine problems than the other Ford teams do. And speaking of that, it appears that it was an exhaust valve that was the cause of Aric Almirola's problems at Chicago, and that's been a problem, because that's the third Ford engine to experience that problem since mid-June. Joey Logano had that problem at Kentucky and Marcos Ambrose had that problem at Atlanta, so that bears watching. And by the way, I wonder what some of the other posters think about several teams, including the #2 of Brad Keselowski and the #4 of Kevin Harvick, having their tires confiscated after the race at Chicago. NASCAR's saying that that it's not a serious situation, but any time that four teams, three of them teams in the Chase (the other Chase team being the #31 of Ryan Newman) have tires confiscated by NASCAR, it's a big deal. And two of those teams have been among the fastest all year, those being the #2 and #4 cars. It makes you wonder whether there isn't cheating going on with those two teams, and when you talk about tires and them being confiscated, that means there could be blatant cheating going on with those two teams. Remember that where Brad's been at his strongest is early in runs, and if they are doing things to their tires to gain better grip, that's where it would be to the greatest advantage, and it might also be a big reason why both Brad Keselowski and Kevin Harvick have suddenly become expert qualifiers this season, where that may have been their biggest weakness in seasons past. (Remember that Brad did not win a single pole when he won the championship in 2012.) This situation REALLY bears watching, because if NASCAR confiscated the tires from those teams, could it be that a rival team may have informed NASCAR of what they may have been doing to gain such an advantage, effectively ratting them out? 31. racefangurl posted: 09.20.2014 - 2:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) So maybe Penske and Stewart-Haas are cheater teams? When it's announced that something such as tires are confiscated, something's up, and when you consider that Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselowski, two drivers that have always been relatively weak when it comes to qualifying, suddenly turn into top-tier qualifiers, and then something like this comes out, it makes you wonder if something's not on the "up-and-up" regarding the #2 and #4 cars. They wouldn't use that term unless either NASCAR thinks something's up, or that the teams in question (the 2, 4, 31, and 78 teams in this case) were turned in by another team. And NASCAR's been known to cover up something like this before (and there are too many examples to mention by name). We surely haven't heard the last of this potential mess, especially if the 2 and 4 teams were turned in by a competing team. 36. racefangurl posted: 09.20.2014 - 3:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) But Harvick's a Stewart-Haas driver and his team had tires confiscated. While NASCAR maybe very big and vast, the garage area isn't. It is a small world and everyone sees everyone doing something. I'll hazard a guess and say that "ratting" out happens all the time. 38. Mr X posted: 09.20.2014 - 6:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) In the case of Harvick and Keselowski's tires, I don't think it's a big deal, NASCAR says it isn't, it's been a full week and not a peep has been heard until now, and it's not the first time that a driver has left Roush Racing or Richard Childress Racing and all of a sudden started winning poles. Equipment means more then what any of us would like to give it credit for. It happened to Kurt Busch in 2006, Matt Kenseth last year, and Kevin Harvick this year. I expect Carl Edwards to follow a similar path next year if JGR can get their junk together. Whilst Brad at Penske has never raced at conservative teams like Roush or RCR, Penske has proven in the past that they can be very competitive in q-trim. Ryan Newman proved that, also see who Kurt Busch drove for in 2006. Rusty Wallace also conformed to that trend. It could just be a Good Year problem too. 39. Eric posted: 09.20.2014 - 7:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) cjs3872, I think you are not seeing the whole picture with Harvick's qualifying this year compare to Kevin's RCR's days. RCR only has 47 career poles in all the years RCR has existed on the cup level. The fact Ryan Newman doesn't pole this year speaks about RCR in terms of qualifying since Newman is one of the best drivers in qualifying in the modern era. RCR as an organization for years has used the Dale Earnhardt Sr. approach to qualifying for years. Remember Dale Earnhardt Sr. used the quote, It doesn't matter where you qualify, but where you finish. RCR also is known to be conservative with engines and that is one of the things that shows up in qualifying trim at some types of tracks. 40. racefangurl posted: 09.20.2014 - 10:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Maybe there'll be something feel good in New Hampshire tomorrow. Today's races were feel good, so maybe the trend will continue. 41. Sector posted: 09.20.2014 - 10:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Even Dale Earnhardt Sr won the Pole Award once for RCR, which was back in 1990, barely beating Mark Martin that year. There were a handful of drivers with 2 or 3 poles to Dale's 4 that year, so not like anyone else dominating qualifying that year either. Jeff Burton was also pretty strong in 2006, winning 4 poles compared to Kasey Kahne & Kurt Busch's 6. He drove the 31 car for RCR then. Otherwise, I view those the only strong qualifying seasons for RCR within the entire organization's career. What we're seeing with Kevin Harvick this year is very identical to the situation Matt Kenseth was in. RCR & Roush aren't top tier teams anymore. They held back their top drivers more often than not. Matt Kenseth is showing how much of a better driver he really is, as well is Kevin Harvick, now that they have a much better team, equipment & environment they're in. For Example: RCR only won championships with Dale Earnhardt Sr, 6 times. Kevin Harvick has flipped a switch after 2009 & became a championship threat each year, 2010 resulting his best year to date, scoring the most points in a season. Add in 2006 as he was pretty darn great that year too. Now that RCR lost Kevin, I don't see a huge success in their future, because both Dale & Kevin were the huge successors of RCR. I don't like the Dillons & I don't see them turning anything around. Won't believe it till I see it. However, Jack Roush (Same with Ricky Stenhouse Jr based on what I said about the Dillons) is the same issue in my opinion, with Mark Martin, only difference is they actually had successful seasons with other drivers following him; Jeff Burton, Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch & Carl Edwards. 1990 was a huge slap in the face for Mark Martin, otherwise, Matt Kenseth & Kurt Busch's talents were able to earn them their championships (As well as Mark winning the Co-Owner title with Kenseth!), back to back in 2003 & 2004. Even in 2005 when defeated by Tony Stewart, they had all 5 cars in the chase, two tied for the runner-up by Greg Biffle & Carl Edwards. 2012 Greg Biffle was only 19 points shy of scoring the most points in a season, to Brad Keselowski, as well as Carl Edwards in 2008 & 2011 being mighty strong. As to what we're seeing now, we're seeing the drivers who has won a handful of races for Roush in recent years of their struggles (Like Kevin did for RCR) leave to another organization, who's proven that the equipment held them back. Greg Biffle is the only one left after this year, & even he's in the twilight of his career, so Roush is pretty much in a slump like RCR is. Before any of you mention Clint Bowyer for RCR, I really didn't think he was a scary threat at all there. He was no match for the Jimmie Johnson/Jeff Gordon duo in 2007 in his 2nd best year of his career. 42. Scott B posted: 09.21.2014 - 1:00 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) My guess on the tires is that. NASCAR is looking at the pressures teams are running. Doctoring the actual rubber compounds would be a high level violation as far as penalties. 43. RCRandPenskeGuy posted: 09.21.2014 - 1:58 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Good parallels between RCR and Roush, Sector. I still think they are great teams that field great cars, but they aren't as elite at this very moment like the media will have you believe. Both of them have been notoriously bad at qualifying and seem to take conservative approaches to race day. In fact, it puzzles me how Roush lost their spot as the #1 Ford team so fast. I do think it is karma, if nothing else, as Roush controlled most of Ford with an iron grip in the past. 44. They're also worried about teams using bleeder valves, which reduce the air pressure, thus giving the tires, and thus the cars, better grip during the course of a fuel run. You start to wonder about the increased number of tire failures, especially on the flatter tracks, the lower air pressure teams are using, especially on the left side tires where there is no rule regarding the minimum amount of air pressure a tire can have, and now this news that teams have had tires confiscated, and it all seems to fit. We all know it's a violation of the highest order to mess with the actual rubber (from the controversy that erupted in this very race in 1998), but there are other ways teams can mess with the tires, and bleeder valves are one of the major things teams may try to do to help with the handling of the cars by reducing the air pressure of the tires during the course of a run, because of how the air pressure builds up during a run. Well, a bleeder valve will assist in reducing the pressure in a tire the same way a tiny hole will release the air inside a balloon, or an aired ball. And if a team can do this without getting caught, they'll gain a major advantage because of how that affects the handling of the car during a longer run. 46. cjs3872 posted: 09.21.2014 - 12:21 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) But to me, there's one major difference between the situations at Roush and Childress, RCRandPenskeGuy, and that has to do with the rite of succession at the two organizations. Childress already has a plan of succession in motion, because I believe he'll just hand the reigns of RCR to Mike Dillon when he's no longer able to run the operation. On the other hand, as far as I know, Roush has no such plan, which is telling, because at the age of 72, we know Roush is not going to be around much longer, and the way his team has rapidly declined over the past two years with no return to past form in sight, combined with the fact that there appears to be no plan in place when he's no longer able to run the team tells me that Roush's organization won't be around much longer. I'd say that if his organization doesn't show significant signs of improvement in 2015, then I don't think it lasts past 2016. Bringing the #6 back next year with Trevor Bayne is his final shot at glory, and if that doesn't work, I think he's gone by the end of the 2016 season, if not well before then. 47. Then there's Front Row, who tried to get away with it a few years ago at Pocono. Mother Nature ruined their fun when rain came and the tires of one of their cars were flat to the ground. The team and driver got a 150 pt penalty(Latford system). Today its probably akin to the penalties that Hamlin and Grubb got at Indy. 48. Even though there's lot of different series here, as NASCAR goes so goes a site like this. And NASCAR is dying. Fewer teams can afford to race at the top (or near-top) levels because sponsors and the media call ALL the shots; the powers-that-be are far more interested in $$$, pandering to greenies and "diversity" types than they are in putting a good product onto the track. Don't forget the idiotic rules changes (and other changes like the Southern 500 jerkaround) of recent years, first and foremost of which is this stupid stick-and-ball imitation postseason thing called The Chase. It was supposed to heighten interest in September as the "regular season" closes; it hasn't. Many fans everywhere tune out and STAY tuned out once their favorite driver has had a fork stuck in him (or her) for the rest of the season. Since its inception The Chase was supposed to heighten interest over the final 10 races; it hasn't. That's why this year's new gimmick is to have eliminations every 3 races -- and a contrived 4-man shootout season finale where the best driver over the course of the year (the one who deserves to be champion) has only an infinitesimal chance of actually being the champion. The creation of The Chase was simply NASCAR's knee-jerk overreaction to boring driver Matt Kenseth's boring championship season in 2003, but those who run NASCAR are too pigheaded to admit their tragic mistake and go back to a system in which the best driver most often DOES win the points race. Of course I may be overly pessimistic, but all the empty seats at tracks and televisions being tuned to other programming during races -- both during The Chase and before it -- would agree with me. 74. dennyfan11 posted: 09.21.2014 - 3:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! 75. Although everyone was thinking it along with me at the time, I definitely look like a fool for predicting on the Homestead 2012 comment page that Joey would be in a wingman's role at Penske. At the time, he struck me as the type of driver that could compete for the occasional win but not good enough to be a Chase contender. I also couldn't stand how he was acting in 2012 when he caused all those wrecks in the Nationwide Series, but ever since he grew up and started focusing on driving his race car, he's come a long way. He joined the club of the good drivers after his 2013 season when he made the Chase and posted good results through the running. Last week I was all Brad and Jeff for the title, but given the strength of the entire Penske team I think it will be Brad and Joey battling for the championship. There were 13 cautions during the second half of the race, and even drivers that ran a clean race became victims of the wrecks. First, there was the day of Joey Logano, who may well be the favorite to take it all, even though teammate Brad Keselowski's running a little stronger. One thing that's noticeable about how Logano's racing is that he's racing the same way Rick Mears once did in those very same yellow Pennzoil colors for Roger Penske 25-30 years ago. In the races that he's been winning, he's not been leading very much, but he's run close to the lead, usually in the top five all day, but not threatened for the lead until the end of the race, and then he seems to show speed that he hadn't showed previously, and takes it home. That's how he won at Richmond, Bristol, and now Loudon. He was never a major factor for the lead in any of those races until the end, and then when the end of the race approached he shows up front with speed that he hadn't shown in the race. Add to that the fact that he got the biggest break in the Chase (having his engine blow coming to the checkered at Chicago), and there may be something going on regarding destiny for Logano this year. Then there was Jeff Gordon's race, which appeared to come unglued when Alan Gustafson made that seemingly questionable call to pit on lap 247 for fuel and right side tires. But given that they ran out of fuel the last time they were at Loudon, and that they were eight laps short on fuel at the time they stopped (and that may have been a conservative estimate, because it may have been more like 12 laps short), they were forced to stop because they couldn't take the chance of running out. Then just as it appeared that Gordon was about to take fifth place from Jimmie Johnson (who ran just average again today and does not appear to be anywhere near championship form), Gordon became a victim of all the wrecks when he ran over a piece of debris and cut his right front tire, which resulted in the same finish he would have gotten had they gambled on fuel and lost. Then there was some of the dodgy racing out there today, quite a bit of which was caused by aerodynamics. Most of the wrecks we saw in the second half of the race were caused by a combination of restarts, the multiple banking of the turns at Loudon, and aerodynamics, as the cars couldn't stay on the inside of another car. That said, there was also a number of head-scratching things today. Two involved Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. The first was when Dale, Jr. simply ran over him in turn four, and the second might have been the most mind-blowing incident of the entire race when he drove straight into the right rear of Carl Edwards and cut his own left front tire down. He did the exact same thing to Danica last week at Chicago, but what happened between him and Edwards almost seemed like a deliberate act. And there were other head-scratching moments from this race. As for the championship, other than the obvious, which was Joey Logano joining his teammate Brad Keselowski in the second round, the biggest winners had to be the two biggest underdogs in the Chase, Aric Almirola and A.J. Almendinger. Due to his sixth-place finish, Almirola has a chance to race his way as high as eighth prior to the next points reset, if he makes the next round of the Chase, simply based on what he does at Dover. He's only 12 points behind the two drivers tied for eighth, Edwards and Matt Kenseth. The other big winner was A.J. Allmendinger, who actually raced into a qualified position for the next round. Another finish in the top ten almost certainly would qualify him for the next round, simply based on his current points position of tenth. Remember that anyone ninth or better in points automatically makes it into the next round, tenth or better if next week's race is won by either one of the Penske cars or a non-Chaser. The biggest loser in todays race is also an obvious one, and that would be Jeff Gordon. A few weeks ago, it would have been a laughable notion to think that one of the "super six" this season might miss the cutoff for the second round of the Chase, but another hard blow from the hand of Lady Luck like the one that struck him today would likely knock Gordon out in the first round of the Chase, and he was the favorite to win it all, according to many of the experts. 263. With Gordon having problems today (I know he's not out of it, but he's a momentum driver, so I think this could end up really hurting him), I think the two guys in control of this championship now are Logano and Keselowski, without a doubt. They are REALLY close in terms of speed and versatility (seriously, like DSFF was saying, Joey is becoming a DAMN good driver), so I really don't know who to give the edge to. Personally, I think I'll honestly be rooting for Joey (flashback to some of the posts I made on him a couple years ago when I absolutely hated him, lol). I won't be completely mad if Brad wins it again, because he definitely has had a championship caliber year (and after all, he was my preseason title pick, if I recall correctly), but his attitude over the last couple years (basically since he won his first title) has really been irritating me. I think it's great to have drivers with personality, but he has become SO opinionated and outspoken that he is now at the point of being almost unlikable. Joey, meanwhile, has transformed from "rich kid whiner" into "likable young driver who has Cup champion potential" over the past two years, and I have to admit, it's been really awesome to watch. The growth that I've seen from him (both on and off the race track) since he hooked up with Penske has been outstanding. So yeah, as much as I would have laughed a couple years ago had you told me this, I think I'm gonna end up rooting for Joey Logano to win a Cup championship (and not only am I gonna be rooting for him, but I think he has an excellent chance of pulling it off). Wow. And as for Dover, I think it's gonna be a pretty intense race. I think the first four eliminations will be Almirola, Kurt Busch, Biffle, and Kahne. I know Denny had a horrid race today (well, actually, they were having a great race until their fuel pump or whatever malfunctioned), but he's actually been pretty good at Dover the past couple of years, despite being totally mediocre there in the first six or so years of his career. So I think if nothing goes wrong for him, he'll have a good enough run to be able to jump back into the top 12 and advance to the next round (and on the contrary, I see Kahne having a putrid race there, so that's why I have him falling out). Oh yeah, and now for my obligatory weekly "Kyle Larson is the real deal" post. The dude is just killing it. Like I've been saying for most of the year now, once he starts figuring out how to win these races, he's gonna be SCARY. And finally, shoutout to McMurray too. It's a shame he wasn't able to seal that win at Bristol, because with two top tens at Chicago and Loudon, he'd easily be in good shape to advance to Round 2 of the Chase. Hopefully he can pick up a win before the year is over, because he really has had a good year. 268. cjs3872 posted: 09.22.2014 - 2:06 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Any of those in the second half of the Chase standings could easily be eliminated from championship contention, even with a good run, murb, because only 12 points separate the two drivers tied for eighth, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards, and Aric Almirola, who's last among the 16 drivers in the Chase. In fact, Kenseth and Edwards could both finish in the top five and be eliminated if one of those below them in the points, but within the Chase field, won the race. And Jeff Gordon and even Kyle Busch and Dale, Jr. are not totally out of the woods, because there's a possibility that one or more of them could miss the cut with a repeat of today's race (Busch was in an accident, Dale, Jr's crew left a wheel loose, and Gordon had a blown tire late). Instead of separating those trying to get into the next round from those at the bottom of the points, this race did the exact opposite, because there are now just 12 points separating the bottom NINE drivers in the Chase standings. And there's a chance that someone like Almirola or A.J. Allmendinger, or even both of them, could sneak into the next round, and with Talladega being one of the races in the next round, there's even a chance that either Almirola or Allmendinger could sneak into the final eight by winning at Talladega. And let's not forget that, in addition to Talladega, both Allmendinger and Almirola also run exceptionally well at Martinsville, so if one or both of them get into the next round, it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that one or even both of them could advance to the final eight and knock one or more of the favorites out. So with both Martinsville and Talladega in the next round, should the 43 and/or 47 teams advance to the second round of the Chase, one of them could advance to round three and be one of the final eight drivers vying for the title. If I had to guess who the eliminated drivers will be after Dover, I would say that Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin, and both Roush drivers, Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards end up getting knocked out. I don't like Roush's prospects for Dover, based on how they've run at high-speed tracks all year, and Dover's basically a high-speed track, even though it's only one mile in length. But with what happened to Jeff Gordon and two or three others an even greater possibility at Dover, nobody other than Kevin Harvick is totally safe, as far as getting in on points is concerned, not even Jimmie Johnson, who's currently fourth, but just three points ahead of Dale, Jr. and Kyle Busch, who I've stated are not totally out of the woods yet, either. If they're not certain of making it through Dover, than neither is Jimmie Johnson, who's only three points ahead of both of them. I have a sneaking suspicion that tie-breakers may end up deciding who makes it and who doesn't, and Carl Edwards' two wins may loom large after next week's race at Dover. 269. joey2448 posted: 09.22.2014 - 2:37 am Rate this comment: (5) (1) "Of course, no one can take "greatest choker in the history of all sports, kiddy leagues and pro alike" away from Manning come playoff time." But I never bothered to reupload the 1984 and 1985 Daytona 500s, which I did in segments (the '84 Daytona 500 had 20 segments and the '85 Daytona 500 had 17 segments). I even took down the 1968 Indianapolis 500 film, which I added the Indy 500: The Classics intros and outro to, because for some reason, that got muted about a year or two ago. So there are numerous old races I could attempt to put up if I had wanted to, but based on what was mentioned in post #278, it may have been a good thing I didn't. However, wacky things are going on there on YouTube. The guy's been solid as a rock lately. Not only is he knocking on the door of that first win every week now, but his finishes over the past 10 races have been steady. Over the his last 10 starts, he's only finished out of the top 12 ONCE, and that because of the blown tire (and subsequent DNF) at Michigan. This kid's gonna play spoiler almost every week during the Chase if this keeps up. Also, a big shoutout to his teammate Jamie Mac. Definitely another guy who could've (somewhat surprisingly)had a decent showing in this Chase so far if he'd actually made it. If 2014 is just Larson's 'getting acclimated' year, then 2015 is gonna REALLY fun to watch ;) 323. murb posted: 09.23.2014 - 12:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) No surprise here really, but Ryan Truex will not return to BK Racing. By finishing second and third in the two Chase races, he's already put a kink in the plans of the Chase drivers, mainly by taking potential points away from them. And if he wins a race, which is becoming more likely by the week, then he'll really affect the Chase, because that would add a spot a driver can use to advance via points. For instance, had he held on at Chicago, the guaranteed points cutoff would be tenth, instead of ninth, because ten drivers would be guaranteed to advance via points, since there would be a maximum of two Chase drivers that would win in the first three races. And Larson's recent performances are no fluke, if for no other reason than the fact that he'd be tenth in points if the pre-Chase points were used (like the good-old days), and only seven points behind Carl Edwards for ninth. That's pretty darned good for a driver with extremely limited stock car racing experience, especially given the organization he's with. (Teammate Jamie McMurray, who was outside the top 20 not that long ago, is now 13th using the "classic points" standings.) But as long as Larson plays the spoiler role the way he has in the first two races in the Chase, and not the way he factored into the Truck Series championship a couple of years ago when he ruined Ty Dillon's shot in the season finale at Homestead, I have no problem with that. But the drivers not in the Chase, and those in the Chase but no longer championship-eligible later on, do need to be aware of those battling for the championship, and don't need to be doing the kinds of things that Larson did two years ago at Homestead. Wrecks by way of hard racing is one thing (such as the Menard/Kenseth incident at Loudon, which was hard, clean racing gone wrong), but drivers not eligible for the title don't need to be making outrageous moves that could adversely affect the championship that they don't need to make. 327. racefangurl posted: 09.23.2014 - 1:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I don't think too much about the non-Chase Cup drivers, unless one was to wreck Joey, in a later round. 328. I'm afraid if these races are off, I might destroy my computer. Is the 1989 Pepsi 400 still up? Can I still go and hear Benny absolutely LOSE HIS SHIT when Mark in the badass Stroh's car spins through the trioval and doesn't hit anything? THAT'S THE DOGGONDEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN! Is the 1993 Hooter's 500 still up? Can is still see Dale Earnhardt, who only needs to finish 34th to clinch the Winston Cup on a slick track that has destroyed cars all weekend (including his own primary car in practice), go 3 wide on the 2nd lap followed by Ned Jarrett pretty much summing up The Legend's career: The man can't help it, he has to race. Is the 1993 Bud at the Glen still up? An outstanding race with a moment that still gives me a lump in my throat. Not even a month past Davey Allison's tragic passing, Lake Speed in the 28 Texaco car that Davey made famous spins, to which Benny instinctively blurts out "Davey Allison spins". A few laps later, Benny, in a completely dejected voice dripping with sadness states he made an error, and that it was Lake Speed. He is unable to say anymore, at which point Bob Jenkins picks up for his heartbroken friend and colleague. Bob, Benny, and Ned had a chemistry, a true love for the sport, and an ability to talk TO the viewer that is unmatched. The early 90s TNN trio of Mike Joy, Buddy Baker, and Neil Bonnett were damn good too. Is the 1993 Winston 500 still up? One of the greatest plate races ever marred by Rusty's horrible crash as he was taking the finish. Ernie wins by snookering Dale on the final restart by hanging back, the exact same thing he did to Dale to win '91 Daytona 500 (underrated potential epic fued we missed out on is Dale vs Ernie). Then the interview with Dale as The Intimidator sat in his car, visibly shaken after causing his good friend to have such a horrific crash. More real emotion. That shows that, regardless of hiw much of a dickosaurus he was on the track, he was just a cranky old softy. Is the 1990 Bud at the Glen still up? That race had more twists and turns than the actual race. Is the 1993 Food City 500 still up? More real emotion from the announcers and Rusty in victory lane. Plus that SWEET 3 wide thread the needle pass from Dale. Is the 1990 Valleydale 500 still up? A wild one from the green flag to the EPIC finish. In the opening laps, pole sitter and new hot shot/hand grenade Ernie Irvan loses it unassisted off Turn 2 and hits the wall but no caution is thrown. 2 minutes later, Winston Cup's Top Gun loses it unassisted in the exact same spot. This time they threw the caution lol. Is the 1997 Food City 500 still up? Wild and unpredictable from start to finish. Notice a pattern here? Look, I could include just about every race from Bristol through 2007. So did they completely reconfigure the track in '07? Of course they did. Other great Bristol races to watch on YouTube: Spring '85, '86, '88, '89, '91, '99, '00, '02, '06, '07, Night '85, '88, '90, '91, '92, '93, '94, '95, '97, '99, '02, '04. Are the 1991 and 1993 Pepsi 400s still up? Seeing the winners Bill Elliott and Dale Earnhardt respectively damn near pass out in victory lane due to the suffocating heat shows just how difficult it was to race those cars and how much they were willing to go through to win. Is the 1993 Die Hard 500 still up? A great race with an EPIC finish and many heart tearing tributes to recently fallen Alabama hero Davey Allison. Are the Riverside races still up? Damn that track kicked ass. So did they know it over for a housing development, a mall, and Lowe's? (because it's not like you can find those things just anywhere). Of course they did. 330. With very minimal production gimmicks, graphics, almost no celebrities, it told a simple story, yet a very real, gritty, emotional, and fun story. It was all about the race. History and tradition were celebrated yet there was no rush to put what was currently happening into historical context. Even with stories like Dale's relentless march towards seven championships, they let it happen, and didn't shove it down our throats. And they didn't have pre conceived storylines going in. They would open with a video package talking about what was going on that lasted about 5 minutes, with stock ESPN music behind it, and if it didn't play out, they didn't worry about it. Speaking of that music, I have been able to find most of the music they used on those old Speedworld telecasts. As it turns out, the famous music during the Speedworld lead in was from a Cat Stevens song. But there is one bit of music they would play from time to time that I can't find. It is the music played in the intro to the 1991 TranSouth 500 as they are talking about Dale's recent success at Darlington, and the 1992 Winston 500 as they are talking about Ernie's recent rash of crashes caused. It is really cool, but I can't find what it is. 335. cjs3872 posted: 09.23.2014 - 4:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And dennyfan11 and DSFF, I can also say that the 1978 Daytona 500, which had been blocked, has also been unblocked. The only thing is what are you trying to attract by changing things up every so often? You can't beat NFL season or NBA season, try to be yourself, not another sport with a playoff system. Let things play out, if it doesn't happen, it doesn't. The TV networks try to hype these races up with different clips some of drivers getting into with each other. Yes, that would be just so fair and perfect and splendid...no, it wouldn't. It's still NASCAR's and the network's property, and simply crediting them for the video doesn't change anything. It's like selling the invention of someone else without their permission for your own personal gain and saying "this belongs to ______; all credit goes to him, even though he doesn't know about it". And by the way, I credit the original owners of the source material in every video I upload, even those entities no longer in existence, such as SpeedVision/the SPEED Channel (from the classic Indianapolis 500 film uploads on my channel) and it doesn't always help, because they may get a content ID match, resulting in ads appearing, even though I do not, and will not monetize anything. I gotta say, Larson has proven me wrong more than any other driver this season. I thought he would struggle due to inexperience at the Cup level, and because of Ganassi's organization being down. First of all, it doesn't seem that Ganassi is really that down this year. The cars are strong enough for McMurray to knock on the door for a couple of wins, and for Kyle to be on the run he is on. I've come to the conclusion that Larson has found out how to drive aggressive and on the edge without putting his own race or others' in danger. I think you are being too harsh on what happened, and it wasn't necessarily his fault. You guys have been complaining about the lack of hard racing, yet we're getting it & hard racing does involve crashes. You're forgetting that at the time, he was going for his first national NASCAR series victory. So he was racing his heart out to achieve such goal in such few starts but the hard racing just happened & costed Ty Dillon the championship, as Ty Dillon slightly went down on Kyle Larson while Larson had a big move on him in the inside. It wasn't done on purpose, it was just hard racing, as it should be. 347. cjs3872 posted: 09.24.2014 - 3:48 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) As I said in post #326, Sector, I don't mind the good hard racing. As long as the drivers are racing hard and clean, I have no problem with whatever ends up happening on the track, and I use the incident with Matt Kenseth and Paul Menard last week as a perfect example of that. That was good, hard racing gone wrong, and there's nothing wrong with that in my book. What I don't like to see is drivers making outrageous and risky moves that may end up taking out potential championship contenders, and the reason I singled out Kyle Larson at Homestead a couple of years ago was that he was making overaggressive moves that entire race, and it was bound to catch someone else up sooner or later, and one of those overaggressive moves ended up costing Ty Dillon a shot at the championship. And there are other examples of that across the major series of NASCAR, and the most egregious one of all came 25 years ago at Phoenix when Rusty Wallace, who was on his way to clinching the championship, got taken out by a lapped car (Stan Barrett). But there have been others over the years. Good, hard, clean racing is one thing, and that's acceptable, regardless of whatever happens, but overly aggressive moves that could take out a championship contender, in my mind, is where it crosses the line. 348. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 09.24.2014 - 12:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "God dammit that pisses me off, the engines are the most badass part of these cars." Cup cars will still produce 725hp, 300hp more then Nationwide cars (whom have a worse aero package and different rules altogether.) 300hp is alot of room too move around in. And as for the whole Tony Stewart mess, as sad what happened to Kevin Ward, Jr. was, and nobody deserves to have that happen to them, he had no place on that track if he was intoxicated, because he was actually putting everyone else on that track that night in danger if he had enough marijuana in his system to have landed him in jail on a DWI charge, had he been stopped on the road. Sure, what Tony did in running him over was wrong, intentional or not, no matter the reason, but Ward actually put more lives at risk by racing while intoxicated than Stewart did. And by the way, where were the track officials and the officials in the series in question here, because they should have been on the ball on this, and if there was any question, they should never have allowed Kevin Ward, Jr. on that track. And I lay part of the fault here on his parents, because had they been on the stick, they might have known that their son was getting high on drugs (marijuana, in this case) and put a stop to that. I was withholding any opinions on this matter until the facts came out, and when it came to light that the driver that was killed was, in fact, racing while intoxicated, then there are more questions than answers, and it's the track owners and series officials that should bear the brunt of the criticism here, not Tony Stewart. Now I'm not going to absolve Tony Stewart of responsibility, because as I said last year, he has no business even running these races when he has not only his own Sprint Cup driving duties to worry about, but also FOUR Sprint Cup teams to oversee. Driving in these minor races cost him a Chase berth last year (because of the broken leg he suffered in a sprint car crash), because I feel he would have made it, and it cost him this year, not only because of the whole Kevin Ward, Jr. situation, but also because his own performance was still being adversely affected by his crash last year, and nobody who's watched him struggle mightily in the Cup Series this year can deny that. There's a reason why Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon have been the dominant drivers of the last 20 years, and that reason happens to be that they're focused entirely on their Cup rides, and don't dabble in the lower NASCAR series much less race outside of NASCAR. Gordon hasn't run a race outside the Cup Series since 2001, except for the charity races Tony Stewart held at Eldora several years ago and one outing in the 24 Hours of Daytona, and Johnson has rarely stepped down to the Nationwide Series since joining the Cup Series in 2002, and hasn't been successful when he has. But Stewart has basically thrown away the last two years, and maybe the rest of his career, by running these non-NASCAR races, and to me, that's even worse than the guys that run the lower series, because at least that's within NASCAR. I have no qualms about these guys owning teams in other series, such as the dirt racing series (USAC, World of Outlaws, etc.), but they have no business driving in those races, until their days in NASCAR's top series are done. 364. Like TLS, I don't have problem with people using marijuana, but if you're going to do it, do it responsibly. Choosing to get high RIGHT before a race in which you are competing in? One of the most ill-advised things you could do. His irresponsible decision cost him his life and permanently altered the lives of his family and Stewart. It could have all been prevented if he'd used his head... Hate to say it, but I REALLY would not be shocked at all now if Ward ended up on the Darwin Awards site in the future. I don't WANT to see that happen, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if it did. This case now has all the right potential ingredients for a Darwin. Glad to hear that Stewart has been exonerated of any charges, but the sad fact still remains that he'll have to live with this for the rest of his life, and the fact that there will still always be people out there who perceive him as a murderer (upon looking up news sites about his exoneration, I saw comments from people who believe Stewart got special treatment and think he deserves to be run over himself...no joke). I don't blame Ward's family for wanting to file a lawsuit against Tony, but with details like these emerging, it becomes a LOT harder to defend Ward... 366. Through all this I have never seen pot elicit a rage like reaction. If he were on crack/cocaine I could definitely see that. Or hallucinogenics. Or alcohol. Or those bath salts people sometimes snort and LOSE THEIR GODDAMN MIND. The incredible number of people I have seen on pot (including myself) have ranged from mellow, to subdued, to damn near comatose, to sitting on their couch naked, staring into space, pleasuring themselves while paramedics and firemen are in his house evaluating his wife for a possible heart attack (this actually happened). Has anyone ever heard of anyone lashing out while high on weed? And that still doesn't explain Tony taking a sudden path directly up the track right after an engine can be heard being revved. I see what you're saying here (I'm not/have never been/never will be a pot smoker, but as someone who has been to and performed at many punk rock and hardcore shows, I've encountered my fair share of pot smokers, and you are right about its most common effects), but overall, I think you are missing the point here. The key phrase here is "impaired judgement". It's not that the weed made him more volatile and angry, it's that it impaired his judgement. So think about it. We've all been watching racing for several years. We've seen what pissed off drivers will do when they are sober. So, what the hell else should we expect from a pissed off race driver who has impaired judgement? My thoughts are still this: I'm very sorry that Kevin Ward got killed, but he did it all to himself. End of story. I'm glad Tony isn't being charged with anything, because as evidenced to about 90% of the people who have watched the video (as well as the Grand Jury who supposedly took less than an hour to make their decision, if that tells you anything), Tony did nothing whatsoever intentionally. The only thing I think Tony should have done differently is that he should have quit racing these sprint cars after he broke his leg a year ago. But in this situation? No, I'm absolutely, positively convinced that he's innocent, and if you disagree with that, then sorry, I can't help you and I don't know what to tell you. And as for the Ward family's statement and apparent attempts to still try and get a civil lawsuit or whatever going, all I have to say is this: Are they really gonna drag their son's name through the mud MORE? Are they really gonna make this MORE of a god damn media circus than it already is? Yes, it was very tragic, and it absolutely shouldn't have happened, but I'm sorry. When your now proven to be high son jumps out of his car and runs towards oncoming traffic, there's really not much you can do. 380. It was a response because I know, and I have already seen folks on Facebook, are gonna say the incident happened because Kevin was high on pot, that he wandered into traffic or got mad to approach Tony because he was high. I am saying those actions are not the result of pot. Tony has been incredibly protected his entire career due to his talent and the excitement he brings to the sport. Instead of helping him, they make excuses, shelter him, glorify his oafish behavior, and hang on to collect a piece of the pie. And as soon as this incident happened, Tony Protection Mode began as usual even though he just killed somebody. They said Kevin shouldn't have gone on the track to gesture to the millionaire moonlighting that just wrecked his family built car (this has been going on since the dawn of racing, yet only Tony Stewart has managed to kill somebody). They said Tony couldn't see him in his black driver suit with the type of car he was in (everybody other car saw him and slowed down and got low). They said the lighting was too dim even though somebody with a cell phone clearly caught everything from pretty far away. Never mind his wheels were turned hard right before and during the impact, causing his car to suddenly go straight towards the wall, on a trajectory right through Kevin in the middle of a turn when all other cars were taking a nice easy left stroll through the corner. What is going on with him is just like the Ravens and the NFL with Ray Rice, the slap on the wrist (2 games, 3 races), blaming the other person (the Ravens tweeted an apology FROM MRS RICE), and coming up with every other completely bogus explanation for the issue (until the elevator tape came out). We saw it at the Brickyard 400, for instance, when Jeff Gordon showed his greatness to steal the lead from Kasey Kahne on a restart and sped away to an unprecedented fifth win on the Indy oval. Well, last night we saw yet another example of that at Yankee Stadium when, in his final home game as a Yankee, Derek Jeter, one of the all-time great Yankees (which is saying something by itself), captured the moment as he has done so many times in his career, and carried the Yankees to victory over the Baltimore Orioles with the entire baseball world watching in a finish that would be impossible to script in Hollywood. It is moments like what happened last night in Yankee Stadium why there are those that are true greats in their sport, because their ability to rise to the occasion when the spotlight is on them is what separates them from even some of the other superstars of the sport. And what was even more special was that everyone there, including the Orioles, who he had defeated, stayed and applauded Jeter, a superstar that did it the right way when so many others took shortcuts, or consistently get in trouble off the field. With what's happened in the NFL recently showing professional sports at it's worst, what happened at Yankee Stadium last night was professional sports at it's very best, and knowing that there are so many athletes that seem to get into trouble makes one appreciate the career of someone who's class eclipses even his on-the-field accomplishments, and like his team or not, it's always a bit sad to see a classy champion go, and Derek Jeter exemplifies everything the Yankee pinstripes have always stood for since the days of Ruth and Gehrig. 395. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 09.26.2014 - 2:55 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) "3. In order for a Sprint car too turn left, it must turn right, along with using the throttle too get it around a corner. Those cars weigh about 1100-1200 pounds and have about 600-700hp too the rear wheels. Sprint cars have too much power for there chassis too handle. And Sprint cars DO NOT turn without using the gas. In short: Those front wheels are just there too keep your ass on the track, the rear wheels do ALL the driving. 396.
