Because teams are only allowed one set of tires in qualifying, his session was done, relegating him to starting 32nd on Sunday. Eighth pole of 2014 for Harvick. The last time the 4 car failed to make the final 12 in qualifying was Daytona in July. Tony Stewart with a nice starting position in ninth, after all the crap he's been through the last two months. 5. No offense intended, because you're not the only one, but that line has gotten a bit old by now. True, Harvick has had some unbelievably hideous luck this year, but that doesn't mean we have to mention these impossible scenarios every single week. 14. Admittedly he hasn't had a great year, but he's just one year removed from a 4-year championship streak. I don't really understand this move by RBR. But on a side note, F*CK YEAH DANIIL KVYAT!! Fantastic to see him getting such a great opportunity so early in his career. And on another plus, this means Vergne still has his seat with Toro Rosso. Button's gone from McLaren, which is a shame, but it's not as if he's been that good for them this season. 21. (And my err: Vettel wasn't released; he left the team of his own volition.) I saw one very interesting article where the author speculated that Alonso has several different potential options. Of those options, the most intriguing one was, believe it or not, Mercedes. She wrote that it would not be shocking if the Mercedes driver that loses the championship leaves the team in search of fresher waters, in which case Alonso would absolutely leap for the ride. Not saying it's likely, but certainly keep the scenario in mind. 23. Basically, at this point, Vettel's two options (unless something insane happens where he winds up at Mercedes) are Ferrari and McLaren. Ferrari hasn't quite been "Ferrari level" for a few years now, and McLaren is facing a little bit of uncertainty with their return to Honda next year. So if you're Vettel, why not just weather the storm at Red Bull for at least one more year? You're coming off four straight championships with that team, and even though you haven't won this year, your teammate has some wins and is proving that the Red Bull cars still have speed. So why not just stick around at Red Bull for one more year and see how Ferrari and McLaren do next year? And then, if the other teams do seem better than Red Bull, go to one of them in 2016. I don't know. This is either a very stupid or very brilliant decision by Vettel. The only thing that I know for sure is that I am ABSOLUTELY going to be watching more F1 next year. I've pathetically only watched about five or six races this year, which is a shame since Rosberg and Hamilton have been having an epic fight for the title all year. So with the possible fallout/continuation of that rivalry next year, as well as with all these other insane seat changes, I'm definitely gonna be hooked back in with F1. Oh yeah, and as for this Kansas Cup race, I'm expecting pretty much what we've seen all year: the Penske cars, Harvick, and Gordon totally dominate. 26. joey2448 posted: 10.04.2014 - 12:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) So 2015 will possibly look like this? Ferrari: Vettel - Raikkonen McLaren: Alonso - Magnussen Red Bull: Ricciardo - Kvyat Torro Rosso: Vergne - Verstappen OUT: Button I can't figure out why Vettel is going to Ferrari, other than the reasoning that one of Vettel's heros -- the legendary Michael Schumacher -- drove for Ferrari, and Vettel would love to drive for a team that his hero drove for. Other than that, Vettel is making a step down, not up. Red Bull is certainly having an off year, no doubt, but considering the team is second in the constructor's standings (only behind the dominant Mercedes') after the kind of start they had to 2014, it's perplexing! At the beginning of this year, everyone thought Red Bull would barely finish races, let alone win a few! And Alonso going to McLaren??? What the hell?!?! I thought he burned that bridge back in 2007? Who woulda thunk it? I don't see Alonso's move to McLaren as a step up. If anything, it may be a step down. And I imagine McLaren is wanting to keep Magnussen, since the young rookie has a full future ahead of him, and Button -- while still a very talented, experienced driver -- has run his course. I mean, Button's been in F1 for well over a decade, and has a championship to his name. If I was Button, I'd go the Mark Webber route and move to WEC. And poor Jean-Eric Vergne. What must he be thinking? Seeing two younger drivers promoted up to Red Bull, while he's left to sit at Torro Rosso? 27. murb posted: 10.04.2014 - 12:23 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, it's been all but confirmed that Kyle Busch and Dave Rogers will be splitting up after this year. Adam Stevens will most likely be Kyle's new crew chief, and Rogers is expected to be Carl Edwards' crew chief on the brand new #19 car. Congrats to Dave Rogers. I don't think he's a great crew chief by any means (he's good though), but one thing that he has shown himself to be is ridiculously collected. He has had to put up with Kyle's horseshit for far longer than anyone should have to. So it must feel amazing for him to finally get the hell out of that working relationship. 28. I would be SO stoked if all that somehow managed to happen. 30. cjs3872 posted: 10.04.2014 - 2:13 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wow, what a week for Kansas City sports, the Chiefs trounce the Patriots 41-14 on Monday night, the Royals not only win the Wild Card game but take a 2-0 lead on the Angels and have a chance to advance to their seventh ALCS on Sunday, but their first since taking it all in 1985, and NASCAR pays Kansas City a visit during all this as well. (Guess who gets bottom billing of the three?) And even though the NASCAR action takes place on the Kansas side of the city while the Chiefs and Royals play on the Missouri side of the city (Kansas City is divided by the Kansas-Missouri state line), it's all the same city, which may be having the single biggest sports week in it's history, and that includes hosting two World Series, as well as a few Final Fours, and even a close call where making the NBA Finals in concerned (the Kings were in the Western Conference Finals while they were in Kansas City in 1981, but lost to the Houston Rockets). 31. Outside of Joe Cool's playoff win in Arrowhead (rare) in the '93 Wild Card round with a last second FG and his road win the next week outside of KC (even rarer) with a big comeback on Buddy Ryan's big bad defense in the second half (the pinnacle of the Chiefs since the 1970 merger, just another playoff run for Joe) they have one Wild Card round win since 1969. 38. The biggest question in Kansas City is, can the Royals put away the Angels, and if they can, how far will the Royals go? If they get past the Angels, the Baltimore Orioles are most likely next, and will they be able to beat a team that, like them, seem to be guided by the wings of destiny. And by the way, in addition to their wins in the 1993 playoffs, the Chiefs also beat the Raiders in a Wild Card game in 1991. And by the way, I'm not sure Tom Brady's done, as you seem to think he is. He just doesn't have anyone around him. The Patriots should still win that division, but I'm sure about anything beyond that, especially with teams like Cincinnati, Denver, and San Diego to contend with, all of whom they play later this season, beginning with Cincinnati this weekend. And the fact that Kevin Harvick seems to have the car to beat is no surprise. The question is, how will they beat themselves this week, because they seem to find more and more inventive ways to do that with each passing week. And nobody can afford to make any kind of errors, especially with Talladega looming in just two weeks. For instance, Jimmie Johnson has put himself in a terrible position by qualifying 32nd, because he now finds himself in apposition to potentially get caught up in an early race crash because of a terrible qualifying run, and if something happens there, he suddenly is in real danger of not advancing, unless he wins again at Charlotte, because nobody wants to leave it up to what happens at Talladega to decide whether or not they continue to be eligible for the championship beyond that. 42. dennyfan11 posted: 10.04.2014 - 3:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) What Shocking news! I'm sure it's happened more recently then that, Dale Earnhardt led the most laps in 5 straight races early in 1987, from Rockingham to North Wilkesboro. Those 5 races were part of a streak of leading the most laps in 6 of 7 races, and winning 6 of them. Dale's 1987 season was also the last time someone led more then 3000 laps a in year. Muscle Milk Pickett Racing also basically quit after Daytona and Sebring, although I think there was much more behind the scenes that led to that than the balance of performance between the DPs and P2s. Don't be surprised too if Extreme Speed Motorsports bails on the TUDOR Championship next year in favor of the WEC. They ran one of their two prototypes in the WEC LMP2 class and were actually contending for the win instead of being blocked and outrun by the DPs all the time. In addition they voluntarily skipped yesterday's race to prepare for a WEC race that's nearly a month from now in Fiji. IMSA really got it wrong with the BoP in three of the four classes this year. Only the PC class provided a fair fight amongst all the teams throughout the year, and that's not saying much considering that it's a spec prototype class. 63. And as for Jimmie Johnson being involved in this crash, that's on him because of what happened on his qualifying run. Remember what I said in post #41 about Jimmie possibly being in a wreck because of being back in the pack where he shouldn't be. Although this wreck wasn't at the start of the race, the mere fact that Johnson qualified poorly, and then ran poorly and was actually being passed on that restart, shows just what a bad qualifying run can result in, because Jimmie's problems in this race go right back to his qualifying run, which put him 32nd on the grid, and he was never able to recover. And remember what I said about at least one of the favorites having trouble advancing to round three. Well, unless Jimmie wins at Charlotte, he's in the red zone, because of the terrible finish he's going to get from this race, and unless he wins at Charlotte, he'll be one of those that will have to depend on bad luck descending on others at Talladega, and not him. And I suspect that what happened at Martinsville late last year with Biffle and Johnson may have been the start of what happened here. But Jimmie should never have been back there to start with, and that's all on him for spinning out in qualifying. 120. But unlike Johnson, who's problem was self-inflicted, Dale, Jr.'s problem was just plain bad luck. But also, I wonder if some of those that have had bad luck hit them are having good luck come their way, if only because of how Lady Luck has bit others. Guys like Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, and Kasey Kahne, who haven't had very much luck this year, are now benefiting from the problems of others. And the Ganassi duo of Jamie McMurray and Kyle Larson, while not in contention for the title themselves, could throw a wrench in the title equation if one of them wins this one, which may very well happen, though not if Joey Logano has anything to say about that, because he's run the very kind of race that has resulted in several wins earlier in the year. 174. After Chicago and Dover everyone thought it would be a fight between the 2 and 24 now after 1 bad race the 2 is in big trouble and unless the 24 wins Charlotte he is going to have a real nervy race at Talladega. We know there are 4 teams that are head and shoulders above the rest on all track types. They are the 22 2 24 and 4. It is extremely likely one of these will win the cup and at least 2 of the teams will make the final four. Logano looks really good to make the final four as Penske are the benchmark on the short flat tracks at the moment and 2 of the 3 in the final segment are run on these and he is the winner at Texas. I think Logano is only the second driver to score top5 finishes in the first 4 chase races. Montoya did it in 09 and Busch may have done it in his championship year. Johnson is now almost certain to have his worst season in cup. I predict he will fall away in the final 6 races like 2011. Also I did not watch Nascar prior to 2009. Hinch has referenced a book before in relation to the 2007 chase and Knaus actions against Gordon. What is the thinking behind the accusation that Knaus would have no Hendrick team win if the 48 can't thanks 364. Schroeder51 posted: 10.05.2014 - 5:40 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) "How wonky and gimmicky?" I'm going to make a bold guess: NASCAR creates a "fan vote" option to the Chase. Fans can vote for their favorite driver, and the highest vote-getter who is not already in the Chase after Richmond will be added to the lineup. Fans can still vote during the first 3 rounds of the Chase, and the highest vote-getter among those missing the cut after each elimination race gets to move onto the next round along with the other drivers who made the cut.. I know that sounds crazy, and I REALLY hope NASCAR doesn't do something THIS gimmicky. But at this point, I wouldn't be shocked at ALL if this actually happened in the future. 365. And yes, the fact that the overwhelming majority of NASCAR fans actually WANT fake cautions to keep the field from spreading out and add excitement is just utterly sad. Not EVERY single race needs to be a thriller from start to finish. If fans can't stay interested in the sport because there isn't non-stop action in every race, then why they should even bother with this sport? What I meant was that I could seriously see NASCAR adding a "fan vote" option to the Chase to allow the fans to vote a driver into the Chase and then vote a driver through each of the first three rounds of the Chase. Brad Keselwoski, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. all find themselves behind the 8-ball after this bad race, and these guys were felled by crashes. Interestingly, Jeff Gordon was the only surviving Hendrick car today and it was a struggle to stay in contention, and Gordon won Kansas this past year. Honestly, I don't care what Round it is, or Chase or whatever. I always go race to race and follow the schedule. The new Chase puts a lot more emphasis on winning, but it puts more pressure on finishing. It hurts drivers like Jamie McMurray, Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth who could pile up wins, top-10 and top-5 the field to death under the old Latford system which was based on consistency. The new system takes away bad finishes by closing everybody up, however everything is so tight that a mistake could ruin your season, a blown tire could ruin your year(Right now, Brad Keselowski's season hinges on a blown tire). The only thing the Chase tournament does is make Homestead a big deal, like the Super Bowl instead of the afterthought it was as the season finale save 2011. Other than it was ride around and stay safe and win the title. Brian France's idea is to make NASCAR look like football, baseball, and soccer and try to compete with those sports and be relevant, but there is no connection between them. NASCAR is man and machine, there are 43 competitors, tons of things can take you out, a lot is out of your control, and putting 16-12-8-4 Chasers out there in a 43 car field where you can blow a tire, an engine, or crash with another non-Chaser can sink your whole year, just does not look well to me. Not all years are going to have a Championship fight like 1992 or 2011, this system creates that type of deal every year, but you can still be the best driver all year and get eliminated by a stupid mechanical failure. 414. And by the way, Brad also suffered that fate at Michigan while Joey Logano had the one car in that particular race that could have dealt best with Jeff Gordon. And as I noted a couple of weeks ago, Joey Logano seems to have captured that magic long associated with Penske having drivers in those yellow Pennzoil colors, because we again saw him not contest the lead for the first half of the race, then watch the other contenders have trouble, get the lead, and never give it up. It's almost as if Rick Mears is in Joey's ear because, for those new to the sport, that's how Rick always raced, never worrying about leading early, but always running his strongest when it counted. Of course, we know he's not, but it sure seems like it a lot this year, because Joey's racing like Rick did in his prime in those same colors, and getting the same results. And for those wondering how Joey turned it around seemingly on a dime, the explanation can be given in two words, and those two words are Roger Penske. And by the way, don't look now, but the way this championship race is beginning to unfold, there's another driver who bears some serious watching, and that driver is Ryan Newman. Newman has finally found the consistency he always lacked when he was the sport's greatest qualifier, and he's beginning to show up a little more at the front, even though you'd never know it if you watched the coverage of the race yesterday, because Newman was hardly ever mentioned until his team took that risky call to get him the lead and the one championship point that goes along with it. And as we know, there isn't anyone that know how to race for championships in NASCAR that Richard Childress does, and the way Newman has started to perform, combined with all the know how of the Richard Childress team, and Newman is a driver that bears watching, as far as potentially winning the title is concerned. People have been wondering who might be able to sneak in if something happened with the Penske and Hendrick teams, as it did yesterday for all but one car on each team, and there may now be a legitimate dark horse contender shaping up in Newman and the Richard Childress Racing #31 team, even though it hasn't won yet this season. Wouldn't it be something if, after all this emphasis being placed on winning, and winning during the Chase, if someone like Ryan Newman could steal the championship for Childress without ever winning this season. If that were to occur, that would be the irony of all ironies for a driver to win the championship without ever winning in a season where more emphasis has been put on winning than ever before. Remember, Dale, Jr. would have won the title last year under this very system, and he did not win a single race last year. He's won three times this season, and may have had his chances end due to a blown tire, much like Brad Keselowski, who's won five times this season. 426. They don't have the luxury the NFL has. A few years ago, the Super Bowl was played between Green Bay, the smallest market in all of American pro sports and Pittsburgh, another small market. But football fans were jazzed and it drew a huge viewing. Because those are the two most storied franchises in football. The Packers have the most championships and the Steelers have the most Super Bowl wins. But, for some reason, this doesn't help MLB. You know, the team that's won two of the last four World Series and is the one team left that's led by a manager bound for the Hall of Fame, and no matter the odds, always seems to find a way to win in October, as Saturday's 18-inning win over Washington in the longest post-season game ever played (at 6 hours and 23 minutes long) once again proved. And I seem to remember that the Giants overcame a 3-1 deficit against the Cardinals in 2012, and this year's edition of the Cardinals isn't as good as that team was. If the Giants can close out Washington, and they've got their ace and are back home, I'll take them over whoever wins the Cardinals-Dodgers series, especially if it's the talent-rich, but fundamentally poor Dodgers, who have the worst manager left in the playoffs in Don Mattingly, who's even worse than Mike Matheny of the Cardinals and Ned Yost of the Royals happen to be. I believe things are lining up for a Giants-Royals World Series (what a nightmare that would be for MLB), because I think the match-up with the Orioles in the ALCS is a great one for Kansas City, if for no other reason, the short right field fence at Camden Yards, because the Royals have more left-handed hitting and better starting pitching than the Orioles have (their bullpens are even, unlike the gargantuan advantage the Orioles held against the Tigers in that regard)), and if it is the Giants and the Royals in the second all-Wild card World Series (the Giants were in the only all-Wild Card World Series in 2002), I would give the Giants a slight edge, only because of the experience form their two World Series titles in 2010 and 2012. 430. racefangurl posted: 10.06.2014 - 11:50 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) I meant to say can't stand anyone making them look bad. 431. cjs3872 posted: 10.06.2014 - 12:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And David, they did the math on that earlier this year, and based on the way last year's Chase races went, Dale, Jr. would have won the championship last year without ever winning a race. And based on how he's been running, as well as the misfortunes of so many of the favorites at Kansas, I give Ryan Newman a shot at it this year, if for no other reason than the vast experience his team has, because nobody knows how to run for a championship quite like Richard Childress does, and if Newman is in that final eight, I give the #31 RCR team more than a fighting chance if they continue to run this way. It's just a shame that the commentators didn't even know he was in the race until the very last part, when his team used a two-tire change to get him the lead and the extra championship point that goes along with it. Remember that the top five in points after the race at Talladega get into the next round, no matter what, so every point is still vital for everyone, except for Joey Logano, who has again raced his way into the next round, and has now become the clear favorite to win it all. Logano's now on the kind of run usually associated with the #48 team in their championship years, because the later it's got in the season, the better that team has gotten. Perhaps what happened at the end of the race at Chicago, when Logano's car didn't blow up until the final straightaway, was a sign that Logano may be destined to be the champion this year. 432. I mean several teams have gone out of business less than 20 years after their last championship (Junior Johnson and Robert Yates did, and Jack Roush seems possible). At this point, you might as well say there isn't anyone that knows how to race for championships like Richard Petty Motorsports... It's not very different and Childress is not going to be able to survive the Dillons. Not that they're terrible drivers in and of themselves but when an organization is filled with only drivers who would be second-tier support drivers for an elite driver if the team were actually elite, it's going downhill fast and the same goes for Roush. Biffle used to be elite but is now a second-tier support driver who's going to have to lead the team regardless. Only Hendrick and Penske know how to fight for championships now. Since Hendrick/Penske had so much bad luck yesterday, that does help Logano's chances if three of the only other teams that win the championship don't make it, although I expect Keselowski and Johnson will still make it. And of all the top drivers in the Chase that figure to battle for the title, Logano was the only one not to have trouble, either minor trouble like Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, or Kevin Harvick had, or major trouble like what put Keselowski, Dale, Jr., and Jimmie Johnson in the garage area for a substantial period of time. And Sean, you must have forgotten about all the other championships Childress has battled for, and on occasions, won in the 20 years since Dale, Sr. brought him his most recent championship in the Cup Series. When I said that nobody knows how to race for a championship in NASCAR like Childress does, I meant across all the major series, not just the Cup Series. Because unless I'm mistaken, Childress did win the NNS title last year with Austin Dillon, and won the Truck Series title with Austin two years prior to that, and nearly won the Truck Series title with Ty Dillon in 2012, and could even win the NNS title this year with Ty Dillon if something were to happen to Chase Elliott, because Ty's breathing down Regan Smith's neck for second place, and should something happen to Elliott, the title battle there then becomes wide open again. And by the way, what do my fellow posters think the fact that it appears that Sam Hornish, Jr. may be the guy Richard Petty's apparently going to peg to be in the #9 car next year. Frankly, I think that's a mistake. He couldn't cut it with a first-rate team when he was at Penske (he was mediocre at best when Brad Keselowski was winning a championship there in 2012), so what makes anyone, including Petty, think that he'll be any better with a second or third-rate team like RPM? 443. Sean was talking about the cup series, not the Nationwide series. The other thing is the truck series and the Nationwide series doesn't have a chase. Those two don't count because the chase usually winning races means more based on the chase system they had before this year. The final race of this season actually rewards a team for winning a race also and that means you compare the cup series to the other 2 series. The fact is the 4 teams in the chase final race of the season actually would be after the win, not points racing their race to the cup championship. The only reason Dale Jr. would have won the title under this system last year was for the fact Jimmie Johnson actually was to protect his lead over Kenseth. 445. murb posted: 10.06.2014 - 5:23 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) "And by the way, what do my fellow posters think the fact that it appears that Sam Hornish, Jr. may be the guy Richard Petty's apparently going to peg to be in the #9 car next year. Frankly, I think that's a mistake." Who else are they gonna choose that's better? Regan Smith would be my only other choice, but he has resigned with JRM for another year of NNS, so it won't be him. And I know David Ragan has been rumored for it too, but I think Sam has proven over the past couple of years in NNS that he is absolutely more versatile than David (and also, I know Sam had a bad first stint in Cup with Penske, but when you consider how good Roush was from 2007-2011, David had a REALLY bad first stint in Cup with Roush - I don't think it's exactly fair to hold Sam's first Cup stint against him THAT much, especially since Penske was nowhere near the powerhouse it is now in 2008-2010). For what this RPM team is right now (a fringe Chase team that is capable of running top 15-20 every week), Hornish is the perfect choice. I think he'll be able to rack up a lot of good finishes, and I think he and Almirola will be a great duo for this team to have around for the next couple of years while they build up their younger drivers (namely Corey Lajoie, who I think has a lot of talent). Overall, I think it's a good decision. As long as they are consistent with their equipment, there's no way that Hornish can do any worse than Ambrose has done. And also, I disagree with "Hornish was mediocre in the #22". First of all, it's important to remember that that team clearly had absolutely zero stability until Logano got there. Kurt spent one tumultuous season there, and then Allmendinger had a pretty rocky go of it there before he got suspended. So for being completely thrust into an unstable ride in the middle of the season, I think Sam did an admirable job. So between the nice job he did in that situation, and the great NNS numbers he's put up over the past couple of years (as well as the job he did at Fontana this year subbing for Denny - he literally had no clue he would be racing until 30 minutes before the race, yet still drove from the back of the field up to almost the top ten at one point), I think Sam has absolutely proven that he deserves another shot at Cup. And I think this #9 is the perfect ride for him to do it in. He won't have any pressure at all, so all he has to do is just do his thing and live up to what RPM is right now (like I said, a fringe top 15-20, potential Chase team). 446. They already have a veteran presence in Almirola (even though he's only 30), and Bowman's upside is far higher than either Hornish or Ragan's (yes, Hornish has been good in Nationwide, but let's not forget that he's driving in standalone races while driving the top equipment in the series; when you put the two together, I'm not blown away by his results). Yeah, they have LaJoie waiting in the wings, but who else? Truex might not get another chance, and Armstrong's mediocre as hell. Bowman would be a huge get by them for the long term. He's fast, smart, and like cjs has said in the past, he's like Matt Kenseth in that he knows how to set up cars. The only negative about him is marketability. Overall, while I'm not against signing Hornish, Bowman would be a much better get IMO. He could seriously be a future series champion if he gets the right opportunity. 447. murb posted: 10.06.2014 - 5:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I would totally support Bowman in the #9 too, but unfortunately, he doesn't even seem to be in the discussion (luckily though, he will be driving for JRM in NNS at Charlotte this week, so hopefully that will manifest into something good for him). The car suddenly shoots in from the left side and basically goes underneath the back of the tractor, with the top part towards the back getting sheared off and causing the tractor to partially lift off the ground upon impact. The fact that Bianchi wasn't decapitated is a miracle in itself, let alone that he actually survived. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v62763_d2HE if you want to watch it. Again, NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. Oh yeah, and after watching that, I'm incredibly incensed at F1 for their bungling of the situation. They had better take a shitload of heat for this. They didn't postpone the race despite the typhoon, which obviously could have been and was a major safety hazard (Felipe Massa reportedly was screaming about 5 laps prior to the incident that there was too much water on the track for the race to continue), and they didn't take the necessary safety precautions when the Sutil accident occurred, as evidenced by the green flag waving at the crash scene despite safety vehicles and workers being on the track. I love Formula 1, but their sanctioning body could have and in fact may very well have taken someone's life away from them, and they need to face severe consequences and make massive changes as a result. 452. cjs3872 posted: 10.06.2014 - 8:39 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) While I think it's a good idea for Roush to get Trevor Bayne into the Cup Series with the #6 car, possibly to mesh with a crew chief for next year, the fact that Bayne will be in the #6 car will bring about a virtually unprecedented situation in that the Wood Brothers will not be attempting to run a race at Charlotte. I find that to be an absolutely shocking fact, because the Woods always run there, so the fact that the Wood Brothers' #21 car will not even attempt the race at Charlotte is, to me, one of the most shocking things to take place in a very long time. I also think that it would be a good idea for Roush to put Bayne in as many Cup races other than the ones he's slated to run for the Wood Brothers in for the rest of the season, now that he's out of the NNS title hunt. I think he should run him in the #6 car at Martinsville and Phoenix, in addition to Charlotte (he's slated to run the Wood Brothers' #21 car at Talladega, Texas, and Homestead). I believe that because he needs more laps in a Cup car at Martinsville and Phoenix, where he's only run once in a Cup car, crashing early in his lone Cup start at Phoenix and he didn't fare well in his lone Cup start at Martinsville, though that was more through mechanical failure. I don't know if that's in Roush's plans the rest of the year, but I think it should be to get Trevor more experience, especially if Roush is pairing him with his expected crew chief for 2015. Getting experience is a factor here, as is developing a line of communication with a crew chief. That way, Trevor may get a head start on the 2015 season. 453. Gordon didn't run that well at Kansas either, but at least he was able to stay on the track all day. Of the heavy favorites for the championship, only Gordon, Joey Logano, and Kevin Harvick stayed on the track all day, and Harvick would have had a much better finish if he had not been conservative when he thought he had a tire going down and nothing proved to be wrong with his tires, but when two top-tier drivers and heavy championship favorites have blown tires, with Dale, Jr.'s coming while leading the race, it's always better to be safe than sorry, especially running at the speeds they were running at Kansas. And let's not forget that Gordon was running third when Jamie McMurray got into him off turn four coming off a restart, and he ended up getting into the wall. Had that not happened, Gordon would have been just fine and probably ran with the leaders and quite possibly could have finished in the top five, because he had been running in the top ten all day prior to that. So he wasn't that bad until the incident with Jamie McMurray took place. Then he got behind trying to get the damage repaired, not to mention being set back by a pit road penalty, and even then was able to work his way back into the top ten before he dropped back at the end. So I wouldn't worry too much about how he's run, because if he runs among the leaders at Charlotte, then he could get back up there. Remember that all he has to do is to be in the top five in points after Talladega to move on to the next round if he doesn't win one of the next two races. Getting through Talladega trouble-free is going to be a bigger challenge for him than running competitively at Charlotte would figure to be, as well as he's been running on those kinds of tracks this year. Lady Luck just has to ride with him, as it has much of the year, and it didn't on Sunday, but as evidenced by what happened to a number of the favorites for the title, it could have been a lot worse. 460. This is where hockey has the right idea: the President's trophy rewards the team for being the best in the regular season. In most sports, winning any given game is hard enough, and the system, particularly the NFL playoffs, works around it. The difficulty is in erasing the fact that racing is about being able to endure the long season and not letting your equipment be taxed into oblivion, and you can just stroke it and make the playoffs, whereas relaxing for one moment in other sports means you're missing the playoffs. There still should be some kind of reward for being the best across the full season, even if someone wants to throw in some gimmicks to unravel the points race with resets. Scoring the most points across a season was taxing on the driver, the team, and the equipment. You had to be on your top game every week. Now, you can be a total hack for 26 races and still win the title (see 2011). Even worse, with the way teams vary week-to-week, you can be borderling hacking for 35 of 36 races, and still scrape by. Even in the other sports, you have to come out guns a blazin' to be able to win the title. "Imagine if you could lose a few playoff games, but through some weird ruling still got to play the Super Bowl?" This brings up another point...losing is hard to define in auto racing, whereas it's pretty cut and dry in other sports. We all know what Dale Earnhardt defined as losing...anything other than 1st. Personally, I think losing is when you come out of the race worse off than you were previously. So Logano, Kyle Busch, and Newman were all winners this weekend, while Jr., Brad, and Jimmie were all losers. Newman did not "win" anything this past weekend, let's get rid of that pitiful mentality. Want a simple championship system? Win the most races in a season, win the championship. There would be one tie breaker, only one, if two or more drivers had the same win total. That tie breaker would be laps led. Every race would carry equal weight. Every car on the track would have the same agenda, to run up front and to win races. That's how racing is supposed to work. Some parts are a lot different, certainly, but there are clear similarities between playoffs in other sports and The Chase, though, and whether you, I, or anyone else like it or not, The Chase exists, isn't going away anytime soon (probably ever) and thus the comparisons are absolutely valid. My point is, though, that almost no profession (or collegiate/high school sport, for that matter) reward the best overall season, so why do we all get up in arms when auto racing does the same? I suspect it has to do with the argumentum ad antiquitatem fallacy (AKA "this is the way we always did it, therefore it's the right way"). For what's it worth, even though I personally have some issues with the Homestead race (why exactly can't bonus points for wins be applied to this race if the season is "all about winning races"???), I can't think of a season when I've been more engaged in the Championship battle all the way from Daytona until now since I started watching in 2000. Playoffs are only about increasing volatility to attempt to create artificial excitement and allow teams that weren't contenders to get back into it, so that's why I'm against playoffs where they didn't previously exist. We will destroy Chattanooga, then go to Ole Miss and get murdered, then have 'Bama at home and get destroyed. We can beat all of the rest of the east teams if we play like we did at Georgia, we go 7-5 if we do, if we play like we did against Florida we go 4-8. 476. racefangurl posted: 10.07.2014 - 12:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Even I watched football, it wasn't my favorite sport. Before this season even started, Skip Bayless of ESPN First take made that same prediction. However, I don't see it. Not as long as Peyton Manning is the Broncos' QB, regardless of how tough the Chargers have been on him over the years. Manning will be able to win games against other teams that Philip Rivers can't, even though the opposite was true when each of them went head-to-head with the champion Seahawks (the Broncos lost to the Seahawks again, while the Chargers manhandled them). But unless what happened Sunday night was a precursor to future success for the Patriots, or Cincinnati or Baltimore turn it around (I give Baltimore a better chance in bigger games, and no, I don't give Buffalo, Miami, or even Indy much of a shot going forward), THE games in the AFC figure to be the games between the Broncos and Chargers, and right now, if they met in the AFC Championship Game, I don't think it would surprise anyone, because they're the two best teams in the AFC right now. And remember, the Chargers have had it easy. Things gets REAL tough for them in the second half of the season, so they need to take advantage of the softer teams, which they've been doing for a change, because the poorer teams have usually been the ones they've had the most trouble with (they lost to THREE last place teams last year, Houston, Washington, and Oakland, but beat every team they played that made the playoffs). 486. The World Series, the Super Bowl, and the Stanley Cup were originally contests between the champions of different leagues whose schedules did not overlap, which gave them an actual reason to exist. Over the years, wildcards were added and other changes took place that eroded the original meaning of the system. It makes money. It doesn't make the system more legitimate. Really, win the most races, be the champion... it's the most pure system you can have. This is not a case of "we've always done it that way." NASCAR has NEVER done it that way, and if you look back at the past champions all the way to 1949, some of them are laughable, even before the Chase was schemed up. 488. murb posted: 10.07.2014 - 4:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) lol, I just saw the new logo for the Xfinity Series next year. We're already on our fourth different Chase format in just eleven years; it's basically inevitable the formula will be changed again when enough people start complaining or another cheating controversy like "Spingate" happens as a result of this system. As for my thoughts on the current Chase format...I don't ENTIRELY hate this system (although I find it very gimmicky, this system certainly has added more excitement; I can't deny that) , but there are a few aspects of it I'm REALLY not a fan of. I won't list EVERYTHING I don't like about it, but two things in particular that bother me about it are the fact that the cut line to make the Chase if you win seems FAR too generous (30th in points is currently not hard at all to achieve as long as you're not driving for a low-budget team; plus the odds of there being more than 16 winners in a season prior to the Chase are low), the fact that wins you get in one round of the Chase don't give you any extra points when you start the next round (just doesn't seem quite fair to let drivers who got behind in a round of the Chase but were able to make the cut for the next round start the next round on equal footing with drivers who ran better and won races). 494. They sent their best out there, and he dominated for six innings, allowing just one hit. He just ran into bad luck in the seventh on the two batters prior to the Adams HR (both reached on balls that glanced off the gloves of the Dodgers middle infielders). I don't think Don Mattingly is much of a manager, but I don't blame him for this one. He went out with his best, and the Cardinals simply beat their best. It's as simple as that. If I was in that same spot, I would have done exactly the same thing. Kershaw made one bad pitch the whole time he was out there, and Adams made him pay for it by hitting the series-winning HR. If you're going to get beat, make sure that the opposition beats your best, and the Cardinals did that. The real problem here is that the Dodgers pitchers couldn't keep the Cardinals, the team that hit the fewest HR in the National League, in the park, and that was especially true regarding the left-handed batters, as they hit five HR off left-handed Dodger pitchers, almost all of them key HR. And except for their closer Kenley Jansen, no Dodger reliever was any good for the entirety of the series, so Mattingly was essentially trapped. And anyway, Don Mattingly made this same decision last year up 2-1 on the Braves, and it worked out for him, because he knew that he had Zack Grienke as a Game 5 starter. And given the option, nobody in their right mind would choose Dan Haren over Clayton Kershaw, and that was the other option to start Game 4. No, Mattingly did the right thing, it's just that the Cardinals beat the best he could throw out there. 498. I predicted that the Dodgers, Tigers, and Washington Nationals were going to have problems before this season even began because of their managers. I've never believed in Don Mattingly as a manager (the only reason Mike Matheny looks so good is because he's gone up against Mattingly twice, because I don't regard Matheny as that good a manager, either), and the Tigers and Nationals both had rookie managers, who ended up butchering their series far worse than Don Mattingly did in his. In fact, the NLCS is exactly what I predicted it would be before the season even started, in good part because of the Giants having this generation's version of Walter Alston in Bruce Bochy, and the Cardinals being the Cardinals. And I'm picking the Giants to get to the World Series, because I think Bochy is going to manage circles around Matheny, just as he managed circles around Matt Williams, and for that matter, Matheny and Jim Leyland in 2012, and even Bobby Cox back in 1998 when he was in San Diego. And that statement about Yasiel Puig was a tasteless and uncalled for comment, DSFF. I'm no fan of his either, for numerous reasons, but that comment about him not dying was totally uncalled for. And I stand by my comment about getting beat with your best out there. It's true that the Cardinals have Clayton Kershaw's number (he's now 1-7 against them the last three years, including the post-season), just as they once had the number of another ex-Dodger ace, Don Sutton (they owned Sutton, even after he left L.A., especially in St. Louis, as the 1982 World Series showed), but the only other option they had to start was Dan Haren, and if they start him, they probably get blown out by something like 10-1, or worse, because they probably do the same thing to him that the Royals did to C.J. Wilson in Game 3 of the ALDS, and get into the horrid Dodger bullpen in the early innings. (The Royals knocked out Wilson in the first inning, and the Angels had were using their eighth pitcher by the sixth inning of that game.) But the Dodgers have never beaten the Cardinals in a post-season series. They didn't in a best-of-three playoff for the NL pennant in 1946, they didn't in 1985, and they weren't close the last two years. 508. And they could have substituted him in place of a wind turbine in the recently completed NLDS against the Cardinals, he swung and missed so often. And by the way, I'm, not sure they're going to be paired up next year, but Roush has made long-time Carl Edwards crew chief Bob Osborne the crew chief for Trevor Bayne's first race in the #6 car at Charlotte. I'm not sure this pairing is intended to be an experiment for 2015, but I like it from the standpoint of giving Bayne a veteran crew chief that was an all-time charge by Tony Stewart and a championship tie-breaker away from being a championship crew chief. This tells me that Roush may not make the same mistake with Bayne that he made with Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., when he gave Stenhouse a rookie crew chief. Unless he knows something about Mercedes that we don't (ie if they were to hypothetically drop off next year) there's no reason for him to quit and go back to McKek. Unless his relationship with Rosberg is just THAT bad, but even then I'd say the both of them need to suck it up, they're racing for the best team in F1 right now. Wasn't it all but confirmed that Vetlel is going to Ferrari, anyway? I guess he got tired getting BTFO by his teammate (He was too used to destroying Wobbler for 6 years) 524. racefangurl posted: 10.09.2014 - 10:07 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) I watch F1 sometimes, like when it's not on cable. I don't have a favorite driver there. My ability to watch it is limited, which plays a role in the no favorites thing. 525. That's a pretty good organization he's leaving from what I have read, but this move will define who he is as a driver. But things must have changed so much there to where he did not like the direction of the team. * Getting back to the old Latford system, the only issue I had with it was a second place finisher that led the most laps could get the same amount of points as the winner. For instance, Dale Jarrett and Jeff Gordon are the class of the field in a race(I think I am describing the 1997 GM Goodwrench 400), Dale Jarrett leads the most laps and gets 5 bonus points for leading a lap, then he gets an extra 5 for leading the most. Jeff Gordon passes him and wins the race, Jeff gets 5 bonus points for leading early in the race. For Jeff's win, he gets 180 points(175+5 for lap lead), Jarrett finishes in 2nd(he also receives 180 points, which the second place finisher get 170+5 for leading a lap+5 for leading the most laps which makes Jarrett have as many points as Jeff did for winning. That's the main issue with the Latford system is that guys did not recieve a big enough reward for winning, and in some instances drivers could get the 10 point bonus and get top 5 point values for finishing well out of the top 5. It may have never balanced wins but you at least knew who the best team was that year, it was no fluke that Kenseth won in 2003, he was in the top 10/5 every week. Not necessarily wins, but finishes dictated the champion. ^The only thing I would change with the older system is to make winning worth a little more. The old system made running well a factor as well as leading laps, but never addressed wins however later as the sport got bigger, there was more "points racing", and "good points days" and that was a criticism of the older system. But in hindsight, to finish first, you must first finish as quoted by Rick Mears still reigns true then and now, in any form of racing. 526. I think its going to fail spectacularly, given Ferrari's performance the last several years. 528. racefangurl posted: 10.09.2014 - 4:02 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) Some other members of this Trevor Bayne Facebook fan group I'm in say he'll probably be top-20 in the Cup race. Because he was getting stuck with crap cars while Ricciardo got decent ones (and won three races with them on top of that). He knows he's in the prime of his career, so he wants to go to a team that will give him the cars to succeed during that time period. I'm just not sure leaving for Ferrari is a great move on his part. Jules Bianchi has been downgraded to critical condition again and has now been placed on life support. Obviously I'm still hoping for the best, but everything that I've read about diffuse axonal injuries has said that it would be a major surprise if he even so much as regained consciousness again. 531.
