That's 27.6% of the field, or more than a quarter of those that were there, including the four that failed to make the race, didn't even get to make a qualifying run. Now having quite a number of teams have major problems getting through inspection this early in the season is certainly nothing new, because of new rules being enforced for the first time, but more than a quarter of all the teams trying to make the race not even able to make a qualifying run? That's a bit absurd. So as a result, I wouldn't put much stock in who qualified where below the top 5-10, but this is going to make for an interesting first 100 miles. That's for sure. Fortunately, Atlanta is a place where starting position isn't really that important, because of how wide the track is, but there's going to be a mad dash by quite a number of the big names to get to the front with so many much slower cars starting in front of them. And I wonder how they're going to line up the nine cars that made the race that were not able to make a qualifying attempt? Another concern for this race, and others on high speed tracks, at least in the early part of this year is going to be the engines. Because of the new rules regarding the horsepower of the cars, some of which I like because I've felt that horsepower needed to be taken away, the engines are going to be run harder than in the past, and that, combined with the distance of the race, is going to create some engine trouble, because the drivers are going to be on it a much higher percentage of the time. The fact that the first non-restrictor pate race is a 500-mile race on a high speed, high RPM track, is going to make this a test for the engines, and we may see a race like 20 or 30 years ago, where it's not necessarily the fastest car that wins, but rather the one that lasts the longest, because we could see double digit DNFs in this race, and it wouldn't be surprising if the number of cars that finished was in the 20s (and possibly even the mid-20s, though that may be stretching it). That, plus the tire falloff on the oldest surface in the sport (this is the 19th year they've run on this particular surface since it was last repaved) means that taking care of the equipment may be a bigger key in this race than it has been for some time. 8. epzik8 posted: 02.27.2015 - 7:53 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) I hated that qualifying session. A couple of thoughts: First, I've never liked group qualifying in NASCAR (except on road courses), but apparently NASCAR has this need to make qualifying must watch TV. (When the on-track race product should be most important.) And how is this NASCAR's fault? Every car that didn't get a run in failed once during inspection...how about playing by the rules if you want to get a run in? You know...there were 34 cars that managed to pass tech and record a lap. 16. cjs3872 posted: 02.27.2015 - 9:55 pm Rate this comment: (4) (1) KyleLarson42Fan (#13), I think the reason why NASCAR gave the #10 team a written warning was because they considered the infraction a P1-level infraction, the lowest on the scale, and a first violation of a P1-level infraction is a written warning, so that's actually in line with their procedure. And their indefinite suspension of Kurt Busch was also the right call, especially given NASCAR's history as a family sport and the fiascos that the NFL has allowed itself to endure, NASCAR had no choice but to levy the suspension. They let things play out, and when the circuit court judge revealed his finding, NASCAR had no choice but to act, and when they did, they acted swiftly. Now I do agree that Kyle Busch's injuries could have been avoided, but that's not on NASCAR, but rather the staff at the Daytona International Speedway, which speedway president Joie Chitwood owned up to, and they corrected the oversight ASAP. I do, however, worry about the tire barriers that have been put up at a number of tracks in response, because if a car hits that, it may actually cause more danger than it alleviates, because the tire barrier could either throw the car back onto the track or cause it to go airborne, and end up who knows where, because the tire barrier often tends to act like a spring and could send the car back the way it came. And 1995z71 (#12), this kind of situation is just the kind of thing those that don't like the group qualifying had feared would happen. Long lines at the inspection station and cars being sent through it more than once has been an annual problem at the beginning of the season almost since the Gen 5 car was introduced full-time in 2008, but the problem's been getting worse with each passing year, but the mere fact that more than a quarter of all the teams that entered (13 out of 47, to be exact) didn't even get a chance to qualify was pretty absurd. However, let's not forget that a couple of years ago, teams were gaming the system with the qualifying draw, because if they got a bad draw, they would intentionally make it so that the car would not pass through the inspection line the first time just so they could qualify on a cooler, and thus faster track. So what they were doing was intentionally making the car illegal the first time trough inspection so they could go out later. The group qualifying has put an end to that. However, I think it would be a good idea to spread out the groups in the first round to allow for late-arriving cars that had problems getting through the inspection line. But cars getting through the inspection line have been a problem for the early races in a season for a number of years now, but never like to the point where nine cars, slightly more than 20% of the starting field, that never took time end up racing. 17. normal guy posted: 02.27.2015 - 10:05 pm Rate this comment: (7) (1) This is normal. That's usually a 2 hour plus wait to get through. The same is true of the inspection line in most of the races in the early part of the season, because it seems to take forever for that line to clear, but usually that gets better as the season goes on. Richard Buck, the Cup Series Director, said that at least 20 different teams had to go through at least twice, which is more than twice the average per race last year, and as we know, 13 never made it through at all, but this has been a problem ever since the rollout of the Gen 5 car full-time in 2008, mainly because of the laser system they use for the measurements, which has failed from time to time, resulting in even some of the most conservative teams, in regards to the rules, having trouble getting through inspection. I know many of the top teams push the limits, and they have to know where those limits are, but for that many teams to have trouble, I have a feeling that something malfunctioned in the inspection bay. Just look at the list of those that never got through pre-qualifying inspection for this race. The list included two of the BK Racing cars (#26 and #83), Tommy Baldwin Racing's #7 car, Front Row Motorsports' #35 car, as well as the #40 car of Hillman-Smith Motorsports, the #66 car of Premium Motorsports, and the #29 car of RAB Racing. You're never going to convince me that all those teams are even capable of pushing the rules, if for no other reason than they don't have the resources to push the rules. And all of them got stuck in the inspection line along with some of the more heavily backed teams. The fact that all those lower funded teams got caught in the inspection line tells me that something had to be malfunctioning, quite possibly in the laser system NASCAR uses to enforce the tolerance rules, and if that's the case, it's certainly not the first time that's happened. 25. The team sent its hauler to Atlanta early to miss a rare winter storm in the Carolinas then sent the #44 Chevrolet later in a plain trailer which was then stolen outside the team's hotel in Georgia. Given the lack of markings on the stolen trailer one doubts the thieves knew there was a race car in it. Of course this raises the question of what would you do with a stolen NASCAR stock car. It matters for the small teams that are trying to make the race that seemingly every season NASCAR can't get their sh** together when it comes to inspection for a good month or so. With the TV deal starting this year, even S&P teams are going to make a good chunk more than they would in prior seasons. It sucks for the 44 team beyond having their car stolen that they miss out on a race attempt, one of the parameters used for setting the field when qualifying is cancelled. And only one-third of the track at Atlanta is straightaway, so they're spending most of their time in the corners, and with cornering speeds higher because of more throttle being used in the corners, that's why lap speeds are faster. But it's also for that reason why I think engine reliability is going to be a problem, and we may see double digit DNFs for this race. With the new engine configurations, combined with the fact that they're going to be on the throttle longer, and the fact that it's a 500-mile race, taking care of the equipment is going to be more important than it's been for many years. If the number of cars that finish this race is in the 20s, it would not surprise me at all. And the problem I had with what happened with the inspection process has nothing to do with the heavily backed teams like Hendrick Motorsports (24 and 48 teams), Joe Gibbs Racing (20 team), and Stewart-Haas Racing (14 and 41 teams) having problems getting through inspection, but all the lower funded teams having the same problems. The more heavily funded teams have to push the rules to the edge to try to get an advantage on the competition, so their problems are understandable. But for the litany of teams I mentioned in post #24 to have the same exact problem getting through inspection is where the rub lies with me, because those teams simply can't afford to do any of the tricks the more heavily funded teams can afford to do, yet there were more of those getting stuck in the inspection line than there were the more heavily funded teams. That tells me that there was something wrong with the inspection process, something that has dogged NASCAR more than once in recent years. A couple of years ago, I remember NASCAR having this same exact problem, and a number of teams that never try to fudge the rules even got stuck in the inspection process, which tells me that something in NASCAR's inspection process, probably the laser system they use to measure the car, malfunctioned in some way. And I think there's a good possibility that's may be one thing that happened here. For so many lower-echelon teams to have this problem (7, 26, 29, 35, 40, 46, 66, and 83) tells me that something in the inspection process failed or malfunctioned. And that doesn't even include the plethora of teams that had problems getting through inspection before actually getting through, and there were a number of those teams, as well. After all, it was said that 20 teams had to go through more than once, meaning that with 13 unable to qualify, at least seven went through at least twice before passing inspection. That's a serious problem, both with the teams and with NASCAR's inspection process itself. 43. cjs3872 posted: 02.28.2015 - 1:00 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I wonder if that's the start of what we may see for much of the race, @39, because I have a feeling that engine reliability is going to be a major problem with how hard they're now having to run these engines. Perhaps those teams that run more of a conservative engine package, like Childress and Roush tend to, may have the hot tip this week. None of Roush's cars are competitive, speedwise, as none were better than 20th, but their more conservative engine setups may actually play into their hands this weekend, and the same is true with Richard Childress Racing. We may see the race fall into the laps of one of those teams this weekend, especially if engine attrition is as bad as I think it might be. I think we may see more teams run a more conservative gear ratio this week, and for the next few races on high-speed tracks until they get comfortable with having their engines being run so much harder than in the past. 44. Anonymous posted: 02.28.2015 - 1:03 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) how can something in the inspection process be messed up??? 34 teams made it through the inspection just fine without an issue. 13 got busted, some of those teams even tried 3 times and still failed, so your theory just has holes in it. #1 fault lays with the teams, they are the one that has to conform the car to within the rules, not to be within the tolerance allowance. NASCAR should just do away with the tolerance period and say he you dont meet the specs provided. always complainers here you cant fault the system when the majority passed. now if it was the other way around and only 13 made it, i can get your point other thing you have to think about is this. they gave the teams and extra 15 minutes BEFORE they even started qualifying, last year session 1 was 25 minutes long, this year it being 15 minutes. they lost 10 minutes of qualifying time, but who is to say if they had those extra 10 minutes how many of the cars would of been able to qualify, I know Jeff Gordon would of been as they showed him getting in his car waiting to be able to drive out and qualify he just ran out of time. stop faulting the inspection when its the team's job to pass the inspection. its NASCAR's job to bust them when they are not following the rules 45. Chad's Hair Plugs posted: 02.28.2015 - 1:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) cjs, I can see that happening at Atlanta. Las Vegas may not have as many issues being a 400 miler. The long range forecast for next weekend is in the low 70's and clear so the track temp will be higher and the turns are tighter so they may have to get down to the 7,000's. Watching some of the happy hour, the saving grace for the engines at Atlanta may be that the pavement is so old that the tires won't have enough grip to sustain the high RPM's throughout a fuel run. 46. cjs3872 posted: 02.28.2015 - 1:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) But with the surface at Atlanta being so rough on tires, a car running on seven cylinders could be somewhat competitive because of there not being any throttle response, @45. And because of the reduction in horsepower, the throttle response will be less than it has been, which is a reason why the driver have to be on the throttle so much more to keep the speeds up. That's why I think engine reliability may be such a big problem, not only for this race, but for the first few races on high-speed tracks this year. And I think it could be just as bad at Las Vegas, because while the race there is 400 miles, the pavement is not as abrasive either, meaning the RPMs may be higher and wear and tear on the engines equal in that race to a 500-mile race on more worn out pavement. Texas and Auto Club Speedway also figure to be real problems for the engines for the same reasons. One thing the reduction in horsepower has done is to make the drivers be on the throttle longer in the corners, and that's where the wear and tear on the engines is going to be the greatest, and we may have seen the beginning of it in Kevin Harvick's blown engine, which I suspect may be one of many in the first half a dozen races this season. 47. They would have been better as a whole that year had they not totally muffed up Bobby's crew chief situation after the Fatback McSwain ordeal (and yeah, I'll admit he was past his prime at that point), and if they had gotten a better driver to start the #11 with than Leffler (RIP, but unfortunately he was just not good at all as a Cup driver). I'm also really liking what i'm seeing out of Jr so far. I know it's early but personally I thought Ives was gonna end up being a better crew chief Letarte. Don't get me wrong Steve was a good crew chief and a great cheerleader (which is really what Jr need at the time they got paired up) but I've always felt he was a little overrated. While he was pretty good at setting up the car for the start of the race he seemed to mess up with the strategy calls a lot, which is something that hes done dating back to being with Jeff. Also i felt Steve had a bit of a problem when it came to keeping up with the track. It seemed a lot of the time when the 88 started a race out fast they slide back in the second half do to not making the right adjustments. Today to me anyways, it looked the car got better and better as the race went on and if it wasn't for Jr caving in his grill at the end he probably would have held on to second. And to nobody's great surprise, Kyle Busch took NASCAR to task about this one almost instantly, and I expect more harsh words about this from other drivers during this coming week. Now there wasn't much that could be done, but for this to happen to the same driver over and over again has to be frustrating. Maybe Jeff Gordon can be for racing for this generation what Jackie Stewart was to his in regards to safety in racing, because it looked like he had a few unpleasant things to say to the NASCAR official in regards to the fencing. And by the way, doesn't this seem to be a bigger problem at the SMI tracks than it is at the other tracks? Also, I made a prediction before the season started that Jimmie Johnson would get at least enough wins this season to match Dale Earnhardt, Sr.'s career total of 76. This win was his 71st, putting him just five shy of Dale, Sr.'s mark. However, other things don't seem to have changed from last year. One is the fact that the Roush cars are just flat slow on the high-sped tracks, which again played itself out. Trevor Bayne was able to barely avoid both of the big wrecks, and salvaged a decent finish as a result, but his teammates were not so fortunate, as they were both involved in the second wreck, which was started by Greg Biffle. However, I do expect Trevor to improve for two reasons. First, he's racing at a number of these tracks for the first time in a Cup car, which has to be a big adjustment for him. That won't be true at three of the next five venues. He's races numerous times in a Cup car at Vegas, Texas, and Auto Club Speedway, but he's only raced once at both Phoenix and Martinsville, and both of those experiences were disasters. The second reason I see him improving as the season goes along is the fact that he needs time to mesh with veteran crew chief Bob Osborne. Also, Roush figures to be more competitive once they get to the shorter tracks, where their disadvantage in speed and horsepower isn't as much of a factor. Also, the Toyotas weren't really that strong, except for Denny Hamlin. The Toyotas also seem to lack in the speed department when racing up front. They can run in the top five, but simply don't have the speed to run up front. Carl Edwards was up and down, Matt Kenseth snuck a fourth place finish out of a car that wasn't that good, and in the middle third of the race, David Ragan, who ran as high as fourth in the early stages, dropped like a rock, and only avoiding the two big crashes got him the finish he got, because he was running as low as 26th at one point. He's got to do better than that, or JGR may need to go an alternate route until Kyle returns to that car, which I suspect will happen around the time of the Coca-Cola 600. Getting a good finish and keeping the car in tact is a good start, but Ragan needs to be more competitive, and clearly he wasn't in this race. And with Brett Moffitt running as well as he did (and I was dead wrong about that, as well), David Ragan may be on notice that if he doesn't pick up his performance, Moffitt could be an option for JGR in that #18 car, something that I would have said was ludicrous this morning. 528. That hit happened at a spot where there was no safer barrier. The race track said there was no safer barrier where Jeff crashed because of the cost of adding safer barriers. SMI does have a history of safer barrier issues although ISC's Daytona track was hurting drivers on lower racing series before Kyle for the last 2 or 3 years or Daytona giving out nasty wrecks on areas without safer barriers. 531. cjs3872 posted: 03.01.2015 - 10:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Eric, what I was saying about the SMI tracks in regard to the SAFER barriers was that there have seemed to be more issues regarding the lack of SAFER barriers at SMI tracks than at tracks owned by other corporations, such as ISC, IMS, Dover Motorsports, etc. Certainly ISC has had it's share of problems over the years, particularly at Daytona, Talladega, and Watkins Glen, but it has seemed that there have been more problems at the SMI tracks over the years regarding not having enough SAFER barriers. And by the way, putting a tire barrier where Jeff Gordon hit the wall in this race would have been an awful idea, because such a barrier would have sprung any car that hit there across the track, which would have presented a far more dangerous situation for that car, plus any oncoming traffic, such as what happened at Daytona from 1978-'84 when cars careened across the track upon hitting that inner wall before the inside of the track exiting turn four was reconfigured following the 1984 Daytona SpeedWeeks. 532. First off Jimmie and the #48 team is back. I figured after how strong he was in the 500 that he would be fine but man he may win 6+ this year. Harvick and Logano are 1a and 1b right now in terms of performance and Dale Jr. is not far behind them. The #24 has not had much luck to start the year and I'm kind of worried. I feel he's gonna win 2 races this year and to the 1st one will be to squeak in the chase ala Kasey Kahne last year. Good solid runs by Allmendinger and Almirola to show they weren't flukes last year. #47 team looks pretty solid as well. Another guy to make a call out to is Truex and that #78 team. As much improved as the #47 crew looks, the 78 team looks legit this year. Good for Martin and the team. Gibbs cars look like last year as in they may have trouble finding victory lane but can run consistently in the top-5 to 10. Brett Moffitt in 8th!!! That's a hell of a run. He did really well last year in his first start too when he was in a MWR prepared #66. And how about Casey Mears and the Germain GEICO team. They looked to be improved as well. He equals Gordon's 14 season multiple win streak from 1994-2007. Only Stewart,Waltrip,Earnhardt with 15 seasons,Rudd and Wallace with 16 seasons and Pearon and Richard Petty with 17 and 18 consecutive seasons with a win are ahead of him now. Only Petty won multiple races every season in his streak. If Johnson wins another race this year and at least 2 next year, he will have the second longest multi- win season streak. Johnson's next podium finish will be his 150th. If I am right only Lee and Richard Petty, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt achieved 150 podiums in the same car. I don't know about Spongebob, but a lot of teens I know really love that show "Adventure Time" (never seen it myself). And a lot of the old Warner Bros. and Hanna-Barbera cartoons (Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Flintstones, etc.) are aimed for younger audiences, but have subtleties that make them enjoyable for older ones as well. I personally think The Flintstones is the second best animated series of all-time behind The Simpsons. Also, they work as hard as the big multi-car efforts, if not harder than them, just for the odd top 15 (or in GOG's/FAS's case, top 20). Personally, I much prefer reading or hearing an account on Gilliland's 26th place finish than Logano's 8th place effort. Why? Because those small guys can value every little nice thing that happens to them and are potential feel-good stories. Without those "junk" teams, we would have a what? A 26 car grid if we say Furniture Row and JTG are big enough? You would be outraged as much as everyone here if in Vegas only the bigger teams went out to race. Summing it up, small, independent teams work hard and can provide us with entertainment. If Moffitt does reasonably well in the #34 car, and Ragan doesn't do any better than he did at Atlanta. And if Ragan struggles any more like he did at Atlanta, we could see JGR scrap their original plan and put Moffitt in the #18 car. Remember what Kyle Busch said before the year started about there having to be more cooperation between JGR and MWR to make all the Toyota teams better. What better way to do that than to put Moffitt, an MWR (and Toyota) development driver, in that car, which I think may be in the works sooner than many think, especially if Moffitt runs comparable to Ragan this week in a far less backed car. And if JGR and Toyota put Moffitt in the #18, that figures to help MWR, because he can then act as a conduit between JGR and MWR to help make both Toyota organizations better. Last week, I thought an idea like this would have been totally absurd, because of Moffitt's lack of experience in a big-time car, but if he runs near the top 25 and Ragan struggles to get in the top 20, I think we could see that change coming within the next 2-3 weeks, with Moffitt being inserted into the #18 car while Kyle Busch mends. This is one possible situation that I think bears watching. Last year's Atlanta race, which aired on ESPN over Labor Day weekend, drew a 3.0 overnight. Overnights have now increased for all four NASCAR telecasts on FOX this season - the Sprint Unlimited, Daytona 500 Pole Qualifying, Daytona 500 and Sunday's race. Despite the increase, the 5.1 overnight is the fourth-lowest for the second Sprint Cup race of the season since FOX began airing NASCAR in 2001 - ahead of only last year, 2010 (5.0) and 2012 (also 5.0). After topping a 6.0 overnight in six straight seasons (2003-08), the season's second race has failed to reach 5.5 in the past seven (2009-15). NASCAR was the highest rated sporting event of the weekend in the metered markets, finishing well ahead of second-place NBA action on ABC (3.7 for Cavaliers/Rockets)." What's this ^ boy smoking? Sounds like 2013 Phoenix had higher ratings to me. Texas, Kansas, Chicagoland, and Las Vegas are all OK as far as I'm concerned." I'm always changing opinions on this it seems like, but right now I'd have to agree that Kentucky overall is probably the worst track on the schedule (in four years, they've literally had one race - 2013 - that wasn't complete garbage). But in my opinion Vegas isn't that far off in second. Ever since they screwed it up by adding the banking (I'm not saying the old flat version was good, but at least it was a little interesting and unlike any other track), it has just been abysmal. I can't find any redeeming qualities about that place (even the whole "Vegas" part of it is played up too - having driven by it several times and spent a small amount of time in the Vegas area, it's about 15 miles outside of the city in the middle of the desert, and from what I've heard, and from what I can imagine just from seeing its location, it's a damn traffic apocalypse getting in and out of there for the races - so between that and the piss poor on track racing, I have no idea why anyone would want to go to a race there). Texas is also one of my least favorites, but for some reason I can tolerate that one a little more than Kentucky or Vegas. I have no idea why, because when I think about it, the racing at Texas in recent years has been just as bad, and maybe even in a lot of ways, worse than Vegas. So I don't know why I can tolerate Texas more than others. Maybe it's just a nostalgia thing or something since in the past there have been some GREAT races there (2000, 2004, Fall 2006 even though Stewart obliterated the field, Spring 2007, both 2010 races, etc). I do think Kansas and Chicago are both okay though. I DO NOT think Kansas should have two races (it's a long shot, but hopefully once Sprint leaves as title sponsor they will take away a race from there, since I'm pretty sure Sprint being based there is the big reason why they have had two races there now for a while), but overall, the racing at both of those places has been fine enough to me in recent years. They certainly aren't even close to my favorite tracks, but I'll tolerate them. "Dover, and (gasp) Charlotte" I've always liked Dover just fine (yeah, Jimmie winning there almost every time gets old, but whatever - so did Jr winning at Talladega and Gordon winning at Martinsville almost every time in the mid 2000s), but I definitely wouldn't complain if it lost a race at some point in the next couple years to either Iowa or a third road course. And yeah, Charlotte has sucked big time since they did that levigation thing or whatever the hell it was. I did enjoy pretty much all of the races there last year though, so I'm hoping that it's starting to get some of its older characteristics back. 582. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 03.04.2015 - 6:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "This race was the most watched non-Daytona 500 in almost four years. Friday's opening practice for Sprint Cup teams, originally scheduled to last 1 hour, 25 minutes, has been shortened by 10 minutes at all three tracks. Qualifying for the three events will now take place five minutes later than previously scheduled. Those changes provide an additional 15 minutes of time for teams to prepare their cars for inspection and for officials to complete the inspection process. The revised schedules, which also note that qualifying inspection now begins five minutes after the completion of Friday's practice, are for the three West Coast races. No adjustments have been made for races beyond the Auto Club event. Teams have 50 minutes after practice to present their cars for inspection, at which time all work on the entries must cease. 587. ch posted: 03.05.2015 - 11:08 am Rate this comment: (2) (8) "After a thorough consideration of all of the available information about the case, it is determined that the admissible evidence and available witnesses would likely be insufficient to meet the burden of establishing beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr. Busch committed a crime during the Sept. 26 incident," Delaware Attorney General spokesman Carl Kanefsky said in an email. How can you not think that the sanctioning body saying that he committed domestic abuse did not tarnish Kurt's reputation? Nascar was banking on this case going the other way where they would be shed in the brightest of lights for ridding the sport of this problem. Turns out this went about as bad as Nascar could have thought. With how this played out, the suspension is a clear cut act of defamation, and if anything, Kurt should file a lawsuit against Nascar. These four guidelines are generally must be met for a lawsuit for deramation. 1) Employer made a false statement about you 2) Employer made the statement with malice (that is, knowing that it was false or with reckless disregard to its falsity) 3) Employer told or wrote that statement to at least one other person 4) Employer harmed you in some way by communicating the statement -- causing you to lose your job, or preventing a new employer from hiring you, for example. In Kurt's case: 1) Yes, Nascar claimed suspension was due to domestic abuse. This was proven false. In fact, since there was not even enough evidence to bring the allegations to trial supports this even more. 2) 'Reckless disregard to its falsity" would easily be upheld since the decision was based on no legal standing. 3) Uh yeah. 4) Obviously. 592. ch posted: 03.05.2015 - 3:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "You can't tarnish something that was already tarnished to begin with!" Remember that, even though Regan did win once in the #78 car, his performance there overall floundered after his win the 2011 Southern 500, and it was Kurt that showed just how potent that team could be. However, while Kurt's out of the woods from a criminal standpoint, the overlying theme here is that he's always been a ticking time bomb, one that I don't think should be reinstated any time soon, not just because of this past incident, but rather a litany of major problems he's had over the years. As I noted when the suspension was handed down, this was the third time he had been suspended for behavioral issues, and he's lucky it was just the third time, because he's also gotten off light on other occasions. To men, the difference between Kurt and other drivers, such as A.J. Allmendinger and Kevin Harvick, is the fact that Kurt had a record, and whether they should have done so, I believe NASCAR did take Kurt's past into account when they suspended him indefinitely. Allmendiger's and Harvick's suspensions were different cases. Harvick was suspended because he violated NASCAR's probation in 2002 and Allmendinger's was a drug suspension, but also a first-time offense. Neither has gotten into serious trouble since their first suspensions, unlike Kurt, who's gotten into a basket full of trouble since he was first suspended, though that was a team suspension, rather than a NASCAR suspension. So I don't think Kurt's suspension should be overturned, not because of what he was suspended for, but rather for the totality of his offenses. However, there's another issue at work with Regan and the #41 team. If his performance in that car continues to sag, the possibility exists for the SHR team to put Chase Elliott in that car to get some Cup experience. Remember that Elliott will be driving the #24 car in 2016, and since SHR is aligned with HMS, Elliott's run toward Cup could be, to some degree, fast-tracked by putting him in an HMS-supported car. Let's not forget that Kurt Busch didn't exactly set the world on fire in that #41 car last year, anyway. So if the #41 team is not shut down, and I still think it's a very real possibility that it may be shut down, SHR could put Elliott in that car, which is the lowest profile of the four SHR cars, to get him some Cup experience for next year. And if Tony continues to struggle, might there be as many as three seats to fill at SHR next year, because I can't see Tony continuing if he continues to struggle like this, and I certainly don't think Danica's ever going to do much in the #10 car, so SHR may have to fill as many as three seats if Tony continues to struggle, and if the #41 team is not shut down. 595. murb posted: 03.05.2015 - 5:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "If his performance in that car continues to sag, the possibility exists for the SHR team to put Chase Elliott in that car" As I've said before, I seriously doubt this. If Regan flops and the possibility of Kurt coming back is completely out of the window, why would they just let Hendrick use that car as a farm team when they could actually be auditioning potential permanent replacements for Kurt? And on the same token, why would HMS potentially use up Chase's ROTY eligibility for next year (I don't know what the specific limit is, but having Chase be the majority replacement in the #41 along with his five races in the #25 would be cutting it close, I imagine) AND potentially distract him from focusing on winning a second straight NXS title? It all just makes no sense to me, and I really doubt it would happen. As for Kurt, I want to see him work on himself before attempting a comeback in Nascar. Regardless of what may or may not have happened in this situation with Driscoll, Kurt clearly still has lingering mental/anger issues. So I think it's very important for him to get all of that stuff worked out before worrying about coming back. But since HMS would like to get Elliott some more experience before he gets to Cup, and do so in a car that would likely not miss a race in the event of a qualifying rainout, they may use the #41 car to get Elliott some more Cup experience. Remember that in the races that HMS enters it's fifth car for Chase Elliott, if qualifying is rained out, he misses the race because of a lack of qualifying attempts for that fifth HMS car, but putting him in that #41 car if Regan does get booted out for not performing almost certainly guarantees him in the race, assuming the #41 teams doesn't get shut down. And remember that SHR may have up to three of it's seats to fill in the next year or two, because not only is there the quandary of the #41 car, but also, if Tony decides that he can't get the job done any more, he could open up the #14 car, and Danica is likely to never amount to much, resulting in the #10 car possibly opening up, and certainly Landon Cassill is a good candidate for one of those rides, though there are also others. And racefangurl, I don't like the idea of giving Chase the number 25 for his supposed starts in the fifth HMS car, because that car number has cursed virtually everyone that has driven it since the whole Tim Richmond situation went down all the way back in 1988. Of all the drivers who have driven the #25 since then, only Brad Keselowski, who drove it in 2009, has managed to avoid the curse that car number has seemed to carry. I think it would be a good idea for Hendrick to reverse those numbers and give Elliott the number 52 for those races. The #8 would be another viable option to use for Elliott's rides in the fifth HMS car, since it's one down from the familiar #9 long associated with the Elliotts. Even the #94, which Bill ran when he was an owner-driver and was Casey Elliott's number might be a good idea. Any number other than 25, given it's terrible history and the bad luck it has cast on virtually everyone that has driven in since 1988. 598. The black and gold colors are coming back at Michigan, where Rusty picked up several wins in those same colors. The other classic Miller paint scheme that's coming back is the old Miller High Life paint scheme that another one-time Penske driver, Bobby Allison, drove to his one and only championship in 1983. And they're apparently going to use that paint scheme in the very race that may have been central to Bobby winning that championship, the Southern 500, a race Bobby also won while driving for Penske in 1975. Bobby was slipping during the summer months of the '83 campaign, but he got back on track with his win in the '83 Southern 500, the last run on Labor Day itself, driving those same colors that Brad Keselowski is going to have in this year's Southern 500. First, from what I heard, the Wood Brothers may be going back to the true David Pearson-era paint scheme for the Southern 500, which they're running for the first time in many years, and now one of Allison's classic paint schemes from his '83 win while with DiGard is also coming back for that race. Besides, there is no more proof that she was indeed trespassing than that he abused her, yet you have no problem whatsoever accusing her. Hypocrite. "It's pretty obvious that someone, either NASCAR or the government, influenced that judge's "decision."" Because NASCAR has so much to gain from one of their most notable drivers being slapped with a restraining order... Furthermore, the judge is a PART OF THE GOVERNMENT. "Now because a judge took a pile of lies and made a personal opinion out of it, you're all complaining about "domestic abuse," and comparing this rape victims who are afraid to speak out." How does being concerned about someone possibly committing a lesser degree of domestic abuse mean anyone is comparing it to rape? That's a ridiculous stretch. "What a bunch of dumb@$$ hypocrites." YOU are calling people "dumb@$$ hyprocrites"? That's laughable, because you just proved that you are both. 616. luigistarted06 posted: 03.06.2015 - 8:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) @613; thanks! 617. Honestly, the win was stolen from him, between that first debris yellow and then the lack of a yellow for the car spinning in the middle of the field. No consistency when the non-factor debris triggers the first caution at the end, and then not to throw one when dude's spun out mid pack. It's more about the show than the racing. I was disappointed with the finish and I like Brad way more than Kurt. Sorry, Kurt fans. 618.
