It's unbelievable how good those two teams have come out of the gates this year. I'm actually picking Newman to win this though, believe it or not. From what I saw in practice, he was actually equal to and maybe even faster than Harvick and Logano. So I can absolutely see him pulling it off since he's actually got one of the three fastest cars going into a race for once. He'll be pretty tough, I imagine. 2. That being said I think the numbers they have on here for the odds were before the announcement that Kurt would be in the car this week. Remember that when Osborne was last a crew chief (in 2013), there was a different rules package that included, among other things, a minimum ride height requirement. So Osborne has no more experience at setting these newer cars up than Trevor does at driving them, and with empty notebooks on both sides, the struggles are predictable. We must also realize that the race at Atlanta was Trevor first there as a Cup driver and the race at Phoenix is his second, and his first didn't last very long, so he's also learning how to drive some of these tracks in the Cup car, though that wouldn't explain his struggles at Las Vegas and even Daytona, where the Roush cars were a non-factor. And also, we must also consider that the MS Trevor Bayne has may also be adversely affecting his performance in ways that we can't see, but can certainly be noticed by the watches and, eventually the results. Remember that, as last season continued on, his performances in what's now the XFinity Series were actually getting worse, except for his brief time in the lead at Texas, which ended in a blown tire and crash. Only once in the last 13 races of last season did he finish higher than seventh. And the fact that Trevor's probably had MS for going on four years now means that there's a chance that his disease may also be affecting his performance on the track. Of course, the Roush cars aren't very good, but as I said regarding Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. last year, if Bayne's performances continue to lag behind those of his teammates, action may need to be taken, though not this year, since he's not that experienced on these tracks in these cars, and his crew chief is as on a earning curve of his own. And Bayne has been competitive with his teammates in the three races so far this year (don't be fooled by Greg Biffle's finish at Las Vegas, because he didn't run that much better than his teammates did), so I wouldn't call his performances lacking in comparison to his teammates. 28. epzik8 posted: 03.14.2015 - 2:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch will be fun to watch tomorrow. 29. In fact, the only part of the track that has a true retaining wall is the front stretch. I can also tell you that it has been this way since the track opened and will almost certainly never change. 37. And cjs messed up on Trevor at Atlanta. His first Cup race there was in 2012, so this year was his second race there. Last year, someone that's a Ford race fan said Roush may have focused more on Chris Buescher later in the year. And if anyone wants to know, it was some Scott guy. I guess it's probably not that big of a problem for low horse-powered late models and whatnot (which I assume are the types of cars that regularly race there), but I cannot believe they let full blown stock cars (IE: Arca) race there with no walls like that (by the way, no wonder Nascar turned down Mobile's bid for a Truck race a couple years ago). I probably sound a little naive since there are certainly numerous short tracks around the country that are configured like that (I know Berlin also has no walls), but the fact that accidents like this don't happen more regularly at these places is pretty mind blowing. In any case, really glad no one was seriously hurt there with Kimmel's crash. I just saw a fan video of it, and it was quite frightening looking to say the least. Hopefully at least some type of safety initiative will come of it, even if it's something as small as a tire barrier in that open spot or something. 42. racefangurl posted: 03.14.2015 - 10:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Once they get to Texas, Roush will have the new cars. If Trevor still has difficulty once they get the new car, then, unless he hasn't Cup raced at the track before, it could be MS or Bob Osborne having trouble adjusting to the new ways or chemistry issues between Bob Osborne and his driver. Btw, It just popped into my head what Bob's initials are. If you don't like him, you can call him BO. 43. cjs3872 posted: 03.14.2015 - 11:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Thank you, @38. I was not aware (or did not remember) that Trevor and the Wood Brothers had raced there in 2012, because Atlanta has been one of the mid-sized tracks that was not on the Wood Brothers schedule since they cut back in 2009. And you're also spot on about how the Roush cars have run in comparison with each other. As I said, don't be fooled by Greg Biffle's lead lap finish at Las Vegas, because one caution prevented him from losing a lap and Kevin Harvick could have lapped him at the end, but since he had the race in the bag, he had no reason to and chose not to. So Biffle could easily have finished two laps behind, like his teammates did. That caution bought Biffle about 10 finishing positions. And racefangurl, I wouldn't be worried about any of the Roush drivers individually unless one was lagging behind the others. For instance, I wouldn't be worried about Trevor in the first three races because he's not run any worse than his teammates have, even finishing ahead of Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. at Las Vegas. This weekend has started out being a different story, because he has run noticeably worse than his teammates. But again, at this time, I chalk that up to lack of experience, both his in a Cup car at a track like Phoenix and that of his crew chief with these newer cars, because neither really know how to adjust them. Failing to qualify for last year's fall race at Charlotte was a bigger blow to this team that many thought, because it kept Bayne and Osborne from being able to communicate with each other, as well as keeping them from being able to adjust on a car both have little experience with in a 500-mile race. I said that Roush needed to avoid repeating the mistake he made with Stenhouse when he paired him with a rookie crew chief, and by making Osborne Bayne's crew chief, he did that. But Osborne's own lack of knowledge with these cars has also proven to be a detriment to the #6 team's performance, both at Charlotte last fall, and in the early part of 2015. Adjusting to Bayne's more measured driving style, in comparison to Carl Edwards, may also be proving to be a challenge for Osborne, because Edwards always liked to run on the ragged edge, as Roush's other two Cup drivers do, but Bayne has always seemed to be more measured in his approach, not charging like Biffle, Stenhouse, or Edwards when he was at Roush, but rather waiting to make his harder runs for when it counts, and I think that's also an adjustment for Osborne, who's used to having chargers behind the wheel of his cars. 44. racefangurl posted: 03.14.2015 - 11:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bayne was up to 28th in final practice. And in his first Phoenix Cup race, he hit the wall after 49 laps, so he's almost what I call a track rookie at Phoenix. Next week's track, Fontana's another track he has only one Cup race at as well. And the race after that, Martinsville's like Fontana, in that Trevor hasn't Cup raced there since 2011, either. I say don't worry until Texas. Roush will start running 2015 cars then and Trevor has experience there. If he run bad at Bristol, that could be in the same category as Phoenix, Fontana and Martinsville. Btw, Phoenix is a handling track, so I wonder if his car was off that way in qualifying. That could contribute to bad performance. Btw, the Harvick/Penske/ Hendrick show looks to continue. Harvick and other with Hendrick engines, as well as Penske have been strong at Phoenix so far this weekend. 45. The Long Shot posted: 03.15.2015 - 12:07 am Rate this comment: (1) (2) I know I sound like a broken record here, but there is seriously zero excuse for racetracks having these types of safety issues. Especially not ones which host large or fairly large touring series races. I also have very little, if any, sympathy for track owners that complain about the cost of putting in these safety features. You bought the track and apparently can afford to bring in fairly well-known national touring series to race there; you should easily be able to afford these types of improvements. And if you can't, then the track should be closed until you can. 46. The majority of the damage caused to Kimmel's car was from the flipping and going through that concrete barrier; from what I read, the only spectator's vehicle it hit was the trailer hitch of a truck, and there was no noticeable damage to said truck. Saying that because only one incident has ever happened at that track in 60+ years means we shouldn't be so gung-ho about increasing safety requirements is bullshit. The flaw has been there since the beginning: just because it's only been exploited once doesn't mean it shouldn't be fixed. 54. racefangurl posted: 03.15.2015 - 3:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Who's gonna win if Harvick crashes or has car trouble or whatever? The way Kevin Harvick's started out the season, could the modern-era single-season record of 13 wins be in jeopardy? After all, there are not very many tracks on which Harvick will not be a short-odds favorite at, and with his team clicking on all cylinders, could Harvick be on his way to a double-digit victory season, and perhaps even threaten the modern record of 13 wins sets by Richard Petty in 1975 and matched by Jeff Gordon in 1998? And racefangurl, you said in post #281 that Penske needs to help Roush and the other Ford teams out, something Sam Hornish, Jr., a long-time Penske driver, even alluded to. However, there is something about Penske's history to think of there. His first driver when he became an owner in big-time racing was a man named Mark Donohue, and Donohue literally wrote the book on getting an advantage in racing. It was called "The Unfair Advantage". So we all know that Penske isn't about to help the other Ford teams out, especially if that makes them good enough to possibly beat them, because that goes against everything Penske believes in as a car owner. The only time I can ever recall Penske helping out a rival team was back in 1994 when he helped out Bobby Rahal get into that year's Indianapolis 500, in which he finished third. Rahal, who had failed to qualify for the 1993 Indy race, was in danger of DNQing at Indy again in '94, and Penske gave him one of his Ilmor engines that he wasn't using that month (Rahal was using Honda engines, which were a disaster at that time), along with one of his chassis, and Rahal qualified for the race. That's about the only time I can ever remember Penske outwardly helping a rival team. 317. Harvick could surpass 2500 laps led in a season which has not happened since Rusty Wallace in the early 90s and lead 2000 laps for the second season in a row. Cjs you are maybe pushing it slightly at 13 wins but 10 is a definite possibility. 12 is sort of a magic number as it has only been achieved 4 times in the modern era and just once in the last 30 years. Statistically if he gets 8 or higher he will be doing really well. This is where I detest the chase. Harvick could potentially go on a tear until May or June and end up 12th in the championship. Obviously wins go into the history book no matter what but I would prefer a season long points race where everyone has to try to perform to their optimum at every track and maximize their potential for 36 races in a 40 week period. You really do find out in the about 8 out of 10 times who the best team are and they receive their just rewards with the championship. 320. Back in 1981, the cup series had 31 races, but it went down to 30 for the 1982 season. The cup schedule in 1985 went down to 28 races matter of fact. The cup series didn't have 30 races in a season again before 1993. The cup series didn't have 31 races a season again before 1994. I am bringing this up because it is very possible that Bill Elliott in 1985 and Dale Earnhardt Sr. in 1987 might have won 12 or 13 races if the cup schedule had as many races as Jeff Gordon had in 1998. Jeff had 13 wins in 33 races matter of fact. In my mind Dale Sr. would have had at least 13 wins in 1987 if the cup schedule had 36 races and Bill Elliott would have done the same thing in 1985. 322. Eric posted: 03.16.2015 - 1:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I mentioned the amount of races because 1993 to 2001 was the era of cup racing schedule expansion. 1993 started the increase of cup races a season with it being 30 race and was up to 36 races in 2001. 36 races in a season is enough to put Rusty at the 13 win mark in 1993 also the same thing about Jeff Gordon's 1997 season. What the cup drivers did in the late early to 1980's to early 1990's for wins has to be looked at them equal to a additional 1 to 3 wins a season depending on how that driver was running that season. The other thing is it is very possible that David Pearson would have won 13 races in a season in a modern era once at least with it being in 1973 if he ran all 28 instead of 18. 323. racefangurl posted: 03.16.2015 - 2:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (3) It's floating around NASCAR favors Chevy. My reasoning is it would provide a better reading than now such due to major teams having different driver and crew chief combinations than they had last year such as the Dale Jr having a new crew chief. JGR also has to deal with that in terms of Hamlin and Carl Edwards although I don't think that affect much for JGR since Toyota is off with Kyle Busch being out not helping matters. Dale Jr. and his crew chief would have weeks together on the track by race 9 and we would know how good the cars Dale Jr's new crew chief are since it is possible that the 88 team might be using Dale Jr's old cars. Similar stuff is true with Kasey Kahne in terms of driver and new Crew outside of the car part. My other reason for wait and see is do to Kurt Busch is back in the 41 instead of Regan Smith. Regan Smith isn't the driver that Kurt and there isn't a lot to judge the 41 team this year on in terms of having their true regular driver. It is very possible that the 41 team is better this year than last year, but Kurt's suspension prevented that since Regan Smith isn't the talent that Kurt is. 327. murb posted: 03.16.2015 - 5:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Here's a question. The way Kevin Harvick's started out the season, could the modern-era single-season record of 13 wins be in jeopardy?" HIGHLY doubt it. At the very most, I'd say he's capable of 8 wins. There's just way too many other teams that I think either will win multiple races and/or seriously contend for multiple wins. Logano will win at least three to four more (I actually think he is just as capable of having an 8+ win season as Harvick is, maybe even more-so - assuming the #22 team learns how to close these races out better), Johnson will win at least two or three more, Keselowski will more than likely win at least three, Earnhardt Jr will probably get two or three, Truex looks really good and may win a couple, Allmendinger may very well win BOTH road courses, Kahne is starting to look like 2012 Kahne again and may win a couple, Gordon will probably heat up in the Summer, Kurt Busch and Tony Gibson seriously looks like a potent combo (judging from yesterday along with their three races last year together), and Larson and McMurray are just as fast as they were last year and are very capable of each winning once (I'm actually still sticking with my prediction of Larson winning multiple - I just have a feeling that once he finally wins one he'll start rattling them off pretty frequently). So yeah, I just don't see Harvick winning double digit races. The last time it was done was by Jimmie in 2007, and while Harvick is very fast and will hands down be one of the two fastest cars probably all year long (along with Logano), I don't think his advantage even comes close to the absurd advantage those Hendrick cars had in 2007. 328. And while Elliott probably would have won at one or two more times had the season in 1985 been the length of the season Jeff Gordon had in 1998, I'm not certain Earnhardt would have won more, if only because he was protecting a big point lead. Now there's where Kevin Harvick, or any other driver in the future that might be chasing that record may have an advantage, because they can't get conservative and not take the necessary chances required to win races. The current system simply won't allow it. I believe Earnhardt would have won up to 15 times in 1987, had the Chase existed that year, but since he built up such a big point lead, he and his team played it conservative and didn't run as hard as they had much of the year. The same is true of Jeff Gordon in 1997, and it nearly cost him the title that year. They decided to go conservative, and went away from what got them a big point lead. Had the #24 team not gotten conservative in '97, I believe they would have won 12 or 13 races that year. But the way the championship is decided now, Harvick might have to go for the record if he's close to it, simply to stay in contention for the title, because as we saw last year, two runner-up finishes and a near-win spoiled by a restart crash in three races got Jeff Gordon a spectator's role for the championship finale at Homestead, so if Harvick has as big a season going as it appears that he might have, he can't afford to back off, or he may end up with the same fate Gordon had last year, as far as the championship finale is concerned. And Colm (#319), I'll take your theory even further. Harvick could stay on this roll through into early October, but if he has three mediocre races in a row, or even three good ones in a row without winning, he could be on the outside looking in heading into Homestead, if those three races are in the same block in the Chase. I have always said the Chase devalues the championship, because it used to be that winning the championship meant that you had to be good on every kind of track, but that changed with the adaptation of the Chase in 2004, and that became even more obvious with this new system that was adopted last year. It's not as thorough an examination as it used to be, as far as winning the championship goes. The championship does not always identify the best driver and team for a given season. It happened to identify the best driver and team last year, but with the current system of determining a champion, the odds of that happening again are less than they were, even in the early years of the Chase. 330. The reason I didn't mention it is because I wasn't sure about David winning 3 more races if he ran the whole season. David Pearson in 1976 ran 22 out of 30 races and it is very questionable it he would win 3 more times in 8 more races as a result compare to David missing 10 races in 1973 with a higher winning percentage. 331. cjs3872 posted: 03.16.2015 - 8:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) In a way, Pearson was even better in 1976 than he was in 1973, Eric. That's because, when he won 11 times in 1973, he had very little competition, and there were races in which he had no real competition at all. For instance, he had the Winston 500 won by lap 10, since his was the only car capable of winning not in the massive crash on the ninth lap. All he had to do was finish, and victory was his. Another of his victories that year, the one in the Rebel 500, came by a staggering 13 laps, in a race in which the runner-up (Benny Parsons) was limping on the apron and the third place finisher (Bobby Allison) didn't finish at all. The next-highest finisher that finished with a healthy car was Richard Childress, who was fourth. But in 1976, even though he had one less win in four more starts, he got those 10 wins against sterner competition than he had to deal with in '73, and had he run the full schedule, I don't think there's any question he could have won 3-5 more races, as good as he and the Wood Brothers were that year. Remember that he did not win any of the big ones in '73, other than the gimme at the Winston 500. But in '76, he swept the Triple Crown of NASCAR, the Daytona 500, World 600, and the Southern 500, winning two of those three for the very first time, and had Richard Petty as the runner-up in all three. And there was Bobby Allison, who although winless in '76, was good enough to finish fourth in the points in Roger Penske's #2 Mercury. Allison was not much of a factor in '73. Then the combination of Cale Yarborough and Junior Johnson had flourished over what it was in '73, with other competition coming from Buddy Baker, driving the #15 Ford for Bud Moore, Dave Marcis winning three times in the #71 K&K Insurance Dodge, Donnie Allison returning to prominence in Hoss Ellington's car, as well as a blossoming Darrell Waltrip and DiGard Racing. So the competition was much fiercer in '76 than it was in '73, which is why I say that 1976 was actually the best season David Pearson had in the Wood Brothers' #21 car, and probably the greatest season the Wood Brothers ever had. 332. He never really recovered from being a late qualifier at the Daytona 500, forcing a gamble gone wrong in his qualifying race, and eventually dropping out of the Daytona 500, and finished second in both the World 600 (to Buddy Baker) and the Southern 500 (to Cale Yarborough). That's another reason why his greatest season with the Woods was 1976, because he swept the three crown jewel races (the Winston 500 was not officially considered a crown jewel race until the 1980s). Also, there was some unfortunate news regarding XFinity Series owner/driver Jamie Dick, as after he collapsed after the XFinity Series race, it was discovered that he, like this year's XFinity Series winner at Daytona, Ryan Reed, and IndyCar veteran Charlie Kimball, has diabetes. There's no word on how long he's had it, or whether he just got the disease recently, but let's wish Jamie Dick well. And what happened to him Saturday is the biggest worry for Reed and Kimball, who also have diabetes. It may also be why the AAA refused to let Howdy Wilcox II, who was no relation to the 1919 Indy winner of the same first and last name, drive in the 1933 Indianapolis 500 after it was learned that he was a diabetic. 335. Sure, Kimball and Reed (and now likely Dick, as well, should he continue his driving career) have that spot on their uniform where they can receive an injection, if needed, but what if something suddenly happens where they can't get to the pits to get that injection to control their blood sugar? Something like that seemed to get ready to happen with Jamie Dick, but by the grace of God, the race ended just before what could have been a truly devastating incident could take place. And Scott B (#333), I think that will eventually level the playing field somewhat, because it helps the drivers adjust their cars. But that's one thing I don't like about it. One thing that has always separated NASCAR from the other major sanctioning bodies is that drivers could not adjust the chassis settings from inside the car, thus making the crew chief a more important part of the team. The crew chief and the crew members who's job it is to adjust the car to the driver's liking are less important than it used to be, because the drivers can now undo the some of the adjustments from inside the car, meaning that he doesn't have to pay the price for making an incorrect decision on his part. The only good thing abut awing the drivers t make adjustments from inside the car has to do with the fact that it limits what having a "bad", or mismatched set of tires may end up doing. But overall, I think it's a bad idea to allow the drivers to change the handling of the car while racing on the track, and have always felt that way. 340. And what you say is absolutely true, but race drivers, like most athletes, get worn down to a degree as the competition wears on anyway, so it's very difficult for any competitor with a disease to know whether that's kicking in or whether it's the natural course of the event that's causing the fatigue, or whether it's a combination of both. And you're also right about the fact that now that he knows what caused the episode at Phoenix, Jamie Dick will know what to do next time. My question here is, is it Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes that Dick has, because I haven't seen exactly which form of it he has. Ryan Reed and Charlie Kimball both have Type 1, but most people that have diabetes have Type 2. According to the story I saw, he was diagnosed with "new onset" diabetes, but I haven't seen whether he has Type 1 or Type 2. Most of us normal people can tell the difference between fatigue and something else caused by a disorder. But the problem in the athletic arena lies in that athletes can't stop to tell the difference between normal fatigue and fatigue caused by a disease. There's a reason why very, very few athletes have excelled with a terrible disease such as diabetes or multiple sclerosis. I believe there have been baseball players who have played through these kinds of diseases, because baseball is not as physically exhausting as football, basketball, hockey, etc. happen to be. And it can be argued that automobile racing is the most demanding of all sports, given the physical and mental strain involved in wheeling a car at speeds up too 200 MPH for anywhere between 2-5 hours against 30+ other competitors. So the fact that Ryan Reed, Charlie Kimball, and Trevor Bayne (who's probably had MS for going on four years, hence his place in this discussion) have been able to succeed as they have, is nothing short of remarkable, considering what they're up against without even having to deal with any other competitors on the field of action. And yes, we have no idea just how severe the situation is for Jamie Dick, or what version of diabetes he has, because if he's just contracted the disease, he could have either Type 1 or Type 2, but if he's had it for some time, then he does probably have what Reed and Kimball have. 347. As a result, he kept it a secret, and was only a handful of races from retiring when he lost his life in the 1966 USAC Sprint Car finale. Now drivers known to have the disease have won in both IndyCar and NASCAR. I think a better example of the ravages of diabetes can be seen with Jackie Robinson. Robinson was blinded by, and eventually lost his life to diabetes just two days after the 1972 World Series (and just nine days after appearing at Game 2 of that '72 World Series) at the age of 53. 349. cjs3872 posted: 03.18.2015 - 1:34 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Incidentally, NASCAR took the tires from the cars of Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano to their R&D Center for what they described as a "regularly scheduled audit", and seized them during the race. They found absolutely nothing wrong with the tires. NASCAR's decision was made independent of Goodyear (meaning they did so without Goodyear's knowing about it) and they also said that it was unrelated to the durability problems seen during the race. However, I have a feeling there's something more to this development. It's obvious that they targeted the 4 and 22 teams because of how well they've run, in comparison to the competition, and the fact that they would take the tires from those particular teams for their own testing without Goodyear's knowledge smells fishy to me. I know this is a normal routine for them, but I also think NASCAR's sending a subtle message to those teams that they don't like how they seem to be so much faster than everyone else at this point in the season, which is why I think those two cars in particular were targeted. 350. racefangurl posted: 03.18.2015 - 2:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Trevor Bayne is a motorsports miracle if you ask me and it seems the diabetic racers, like Ryan Reed, Charlie Kimball and should he come back, Jamie Dick would fall into that category as well. MS is a disease that attacks the central nervous system, which could affect, among other things, the reflexes, and a lot of what makes an elite racer just that is reflexes. Not just the reflexes to be able to avoid trouble, but also the reflexes to make the split-second decisions that separate the average from the good, the good from the above average, and the above average from the great. So if Bayne has the career that I think his ability as a driver would allow him to have normally, it would be nothing short of miraculous, given that he has probably raced with MS since not long after his 2011 Daytona 500 win. Now that takes absolutely nothing away from those racing with diabetes, because that's a debilitating disease, but in other ways. The challenges those with diabetes have when it comes to racing are more physical, especially in terms of stamina, because at almost any moment, someone like Reed, Kimball, and now Dick may have to come into the pits to get a shot of insulin if they feel weaker than normal, in addition to making the car better. At least Roush and Ganassi have figured out a way around that for their respective drivers that have diabetes, which leaves one challenge for Dick that Reed and Kimball don't have to worry about, and that is racing for a small budget team, never minding the fact that Dick is an owner/driver in the XFinity Series. And with the racing fraternity being what it is, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Reed and Roush give Jamie Dick a hand, since they know exactly what he's going through, Reed as a fellow driver with diabetes and rush being Reed's car owner. And it wouldn't surprise me if Ganassi pitched in, considering his own experience through being Charlie Kimball's car owner in the IndyCar Series. 354. Foyt's temper, but only the fraction of the racing ability that A.J. had. And as I've said before, there's a reason why Michael Andretti's IndyCar team returned to prominence after she left. She's been a cancer to every team she's ever been with, and her mere presence may be a reason why Tony Stewart's struggling so much. I never thought about this before, but the lag in Stewart's performance started at about the same time he began to run Danica in the #10 car, which was part-time in 2012. Perhaps the drag on the other teams she's been with has now hit the #14 team since she got there in 2012, and maybe the constant distraction Danica has always been is one of the reasons why SHR, as a whole, has been struggling (even if the #4 car is not), because the #14 car has struggled for going on three years now, and even the #41 team has struggled with it's consistency, and hasn't seen the front nearly as much as it should, even last year. We know the expansion to four teams has been a drag on SHR, but perhaps Danica has been a bigger drag on the organization than everyone thought it was, myself included. And perhaps trying to get Danica competitive to satisfy her sponsors and fan base has held back the #14 team more than anyone could have realized. It wouldn't surprise me that if Danica left, the #14 team and maybe the #41 team, as well as Danica's current team, would all run significantly better without the albatross known as Danica hanging over that organization. 356. And I thought I was hard on Danica when I named her "Danican't". And by the way, let's add Brian Vickers to the list of those that are fighting through health problem, and his heart problems are the most serious of them all, and his comeback story may be the most amazing in the modern history of the sport, along with Ernie Irvan's comeback 20 years ago from the crash at Michigan that, by all rights, should have killed him. The thing about that is something that likely would have been turned down by the Twilight Zone, because it's so eerie, and that is the fact that, not only did they come back from situations that could easily have killed them, but both drivers got their first victories after their life-threatening situations in the very same race, the July race at Loudon. Irvan's first of three wins after his crash came at Loudon in 1996 and Vickers' only win since his heart condition first materialized was in that same race, the July race at Loudon, in 2013. And Vickers' situation is one that, unlike the others (Reed, Kimball, Bayne, and now Dick), could prove fatal at any time. Younger fans of the sport might not know the name Dean Roper. Roper, who's son Tony was killed in 2000 at Texas Motor Speedway in a Truck Series event, had a heart attack while racing in an ARCA race at Springfield, IL in 2001, and was dead before his car crashed. 359. racefangurl posted: 03.19.2015 - 5:52 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) D(oes) A(nyone) N(otice) I C(rash) A(lot) is something I saw somewhere. 360. That really freaking sucks. At this point you have to wonder whether it'll come to a point where he just retires for the sake of his health. Not that there's any correlation between racing and blood clots, but I feel at this point his best option might just be to call it a career and focus on getting himself 100% healthy. 375. racefangurl posted: 03.20.2015 - 1:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I once read something that indicated inactivity can trigger clots in susceptible people. But this makes me think if a diabetic driver had his blood sugar fall dangerously low in car, should he quit? Or as much as I live in hope about this situation not happening, Trevor Bayne had an MS flare after some race with a hot track, say Fontana, should he quit and go be a motivational speaker, even if he recovered, like in spring 2011? He gives motivational speeches, I read once. Btw, if Trevor had an MS attack after Fontana given March is MS month, it would be just as ironic as Vickers' situation. 376. joey2448 posted: 03.20.2015 - 1:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Really sucks about Brian Vickers, but once again this gives Brett Moffitt a shot in a good ride. It also makes the point in that comment I made about former USAC stock car champion Dean Roper that much more important to make. Vickers needs to retire, for his own well being, as well as the safety of others. With all the talk about safety that's gone on since Kyle Busch's crash in the XFinity Series race at Daytona, the last thing anyone in the sport needs is for a driver to be seriously injured, or worse, because NASCAR let someone on the track that had no business being out there because of health problems, and a driver with the kind of condition Vickers has, could very well put everyone he races against in danger, in the event something terrible happens while he's on the track, not to mention his own well being. So Vickers needs to hang it up and possibly become a driver coach for a team, possibly MWR, because he's someone who can do a lot for an organization as a mentor to other drivers, because he seems to have the kind of personality that lends itself to being a mentor to younger drivers coming up. So he can still be very valuable to an organization with all the knowledge he possesses from his years as a driver, and could even help as an analyst for one of the networks, because he seems to be capable of doing that, as well. 385.
