Also Chris Buescher gets an unexpected first career start my opinion he out runs his two other front row motorsports teammates. And think RAB Racing should just quit trying to make cup races there like 0-10 now. 4. TS1420 posted: 03.20.2015 - 8:58 pm Rate this comment: (3) (5) Kurt Busch on the pole and SHR front row sweep! They are gonna be real strong all year long. Not surprised at all that the JGR cars are showing good speed here. They've been the best team at this track over the past two or three years, and they were also fast at Atlanta. I expect Kenseth, Hamlin, and Edwards to all contend for the win, and I also expect Ragan to have his best run in the #18 thus far (this has always been one of his best tracks). Chris Buescher makes his Cup debut in the Front Row #34 and out-qualifies Trevor Bayne, a fully funded Roush car. 6. racefangurl posted: 03.20.2015 - 9:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) None of the Roushskateers qualified that good. They can't get worse. They're so bad, Roush is there's no where to go but up, practically. 7. 18fan posted: 03.20.2015 - 9:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The last two years, when Gibbs has been off the pace all season, they have been fast at Atlanta and Fontana. It will be interesting to see what Ragan does with the team that has finished top 3 four years in a row at Fontana (although that was with Dave Rogers as the crew chief). 8. The Long Shot posted: 03.20.2015 - 9:16 pm Rate this comment: (9) (16) Oh great...Señor Douche may legitimately have a chance to win a race and make the Chase now...*puke*. That's the absolute last thing NASCAR needs. (And before the hate comments come flooding in...this is not solely about the supposed Driscoll incident. That's merely the icing of a cake that's been baking for 15 years now.) 9. The Long Shot posted: 03.20.2015 - 9:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I wish I could figure out whether Roush is legitimately that bad or whether Stenhouse and Bayne are just turning out to be huge busts. Either way, if I'm Chris Buescher or Bubba Wallace, I am weighing ALL possible alternatives to moving up to Cup with Roush. 10. racefangurl posted: 03.20.2015 - 9:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Roush has had handling issues this year, so maybe, just maybe, they may be that bad. Biffle said last year they were behind in the simulation and mentioned engineering and aerodynamic issues. They're also down on horsepower compared to other big name teams. 11. cjs3872 posted: 03.20.2015 - 9:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Why is anyone surprised at the Toyotas running so well, qualifying third (Ragan), fourth (Kenseth), seventh (Hamlin), and tenth (Bowyer)? And the #55 would probably be up there if not for the sudden and unexpected driver change. The only disappointment among the Toyota team was Carl Edwards qualifying 15th. Remember that, much like the races at Michigan are for the American manufacturers, the race at Fontana is run at the home track for Toyota Racing Development, so it stands to reason that they'd put a little extra effort into winning this race, which they've done the last two years with Kyle Busch. If the JGR cars aren't running up front in this race, then something's seriously wrong with JGR and MWR, though I'll give the #55 team a pass for the reason mentioned above. And as for the point The Long Shot mentions in post #8 regarding Kurt Busch making the Chase, the real problem there stems with the decision to make the cutoff the top 30 in points, which Kurt should easily make this week if nothing goes wrong (he's already up to 33rd in points, despite running on only one of the first four races). I said last year that a driver should have to be in the top 20 in points to qualify for a Chase berth if he wins a race. When they had the Wild Card berths for the Chase prior to last year, 20th in points was the cutoff, so if it was good enough to make 20th in points the cutoff then, why not make the cutoff 20th in points now. And there should not be the qualification that a driver has to attempt to qualify for all the race, and start every race he qualifies for, because if a driver wants to run the Indianapolis 500, for example, and ends up being late for the start at Charlotte for whatever reason, he should not be penalized in that regard. After all, should that happen, and it did happen to Robby Gordon in 2000 because of a long rain delay at Indy, not getting any points because he didn't start the race is a big enough penalty, and if he still ends up inside the cut, then he gets into the Chase, according to the qualification rules. 12. cjs3872 posted: 03.20.2015 - 9:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Roush is legitimately that bad, The Long Shot. Greg Biffle was a front runner and won at Michigan as recently as 2013, and has won at Auto Club Speedway before, and he qualified behind Stenhouse. Ther clincher here comes with the knowledge that Michael Annett outqualified all three Roush cars in the #46 car for HScott Racing. Enough said. 13. 23andJoe posted: 03.20.2015 - 9:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (5) >It's safe to say that RAB Racing is one of the worst Cup team, ever. >worst Cup team, ever. >ever. He crashed in practice and had to go to a backup, so that's why he was slower than his teammates in qualifying. He was still basically shaking down his backup. Had he had his original car he probably would have been up there with them in qualifying. 15. So far, there are only 2 people who have made predictions, including mine which have yet to be posted. If anyone wishes to make picks, please feel free to do so. I would like there to be a good number of competitors to keep the championship battle going from Daytona. You don't need any knowledge of which cars seem to be favorites in each class. After all, it is a 12 hour race. You can also use qualifying and practice results from earlier this weekend to pick if you want. Please consider participating. Thanks! 16. Started off the year with Gary Bradberry, who failed to qualify for the first 4 races. He was then replaced by Brad Teague, who failed to qualify for the next two races. Finally, he was replaced by Randy MacDonald, who failed to qualify for the next race. Afterwards. they shut down due to lack of speed. That's what I thought. Please... I can name at least 5 worse without having to resort to S&P teams. At least RAB have the necessary pace to make a race and for this very reason TMG is worse for starters. Mansion Motorsports: 3-8 in 2000, 3-9 in 2001, 1-4 in 2002. That 1 start is made with their ARCA car, to fill the field as a post entry. FitzBradshaw Racing has a 1-9 ratio, in an era where you could run well out of the blue. Price Motorsports (Foster Price's team) is 3-8 and has one finish. A 39th. 4 laps down to the horrendous #7 with Atwood. But wait... There is more. McGlynn Racing: I mention them because I have to. Not part of the 5 I promised, as they did quite an amount of S&P. 21-42. Nice 1:2 ratio. Best finish of 32nd. Out of 63 attempts only TWO qualifications inside the top 30. Rick Ware Racing: 1-22 Many different drivers, ONE race made out of 23. Quite a few different years ranging from 1998 to 2012. Beat this. So for me the 5 worst modern teams are: (No. 1 is the worst) 5. Mansion Motorsports 4. The Motorsports Group 3. Price Motorsports 2. FitzBradshaw Racing 1. Rick Ware Racing 34. So I say Roush is legitimately that bad in qualifying and that's enough to mess them up. And while I'm talking about Roush, Buescher's Nationwide/Xfinity debut was as a fill-in for a sick Roush driver. With the first GWC caution, With 2 laps to go their was a small, tiny piece of debris on the APRON and that's dangerous? Also, NASCAR knows that what Kurt has been through these past few months their fan base would grow mad with him winning. Truly a terrible call by Assca- NASCAR, Excuse me. With the second GWC caution, It was excusable because it was on the racing line and it was a REAL piece of debris. And with the third GWC Caution, Oh wait, Their was none? Wait. Guys get their logic. With 1 1/3 Laps left, I tiny piece of debris on the apron is considered 'harmful'. But with 1 lap ago, A car destroyed is just sitting their. NASCAR got lucky he was able to drive off or we probable would have seen some drivers hurt. Kurt had that win stolen. Also if you look back, many drivers in the past few years have been robbed the win, either from NASCAR or other drivers. I guess the key here is to not lead and then when the time comes go for it. I mean just think, 2014 Jimmie had the win but due to a tire lost, Gordon had the win but NASCAR threw the caution for a sideways driver in the grass. 2013 was from a excusable wreck. 2012 Was Kyle's race but Mother nature was rooting for Tony and started pouring when he was leading. And 2011 Was just like 2013. So yeah, NASCAR, Stop making calls that make me think you're really ASSCAR. 416. Kenseth rose to the point down the stretch, he even had comfortable lead of a few seconds and everybody was gearing up for a fuel mileage finish. Lord forbid that from occuring in nascar nowadays. Nope, so instead a phantom yellow is thrown. So of course everyone pits, and in doing so Kenseth breaks his axle. Kurt gets the lead with Harvick right on his tail. Another debris yellow, this time barely noticeable but sure, debris, I guess. Fast forward to the last GWC Biffle started wrecking coming off of turn four headed to the white. Not only that but HE WAS STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TRACK! His wreck not only appeared worse than Hornish JR'S from earlier, but he was certainly a much larger and undoubtedly more noticeable piece of debris, right? And yes I am aware he got it rolling again and yes I am actually in favor of racing back to the checkered no matter what, save for obvious circumstances. But if were using the 500 "finish" as the precedent, then this was an obvious yellow. So instead of Kenseth or Kurt winning we get Kez. And that's cool, since Martin finally retired I've gone back to pulling for the blue ovals, more specifically Penske as Roush is now just becoming a disgrace (I mean Buscher out ran them all day in hardly top tier Front Row equipment and came home 20th!) So I ask why have standards or rules for that matter if your officials constantly make up "interpretations" by the seat of their pants and make indefensible rulings that have a significant impact on not only whether these teams make the playoffs, but something that I think we all agree supercedes that, driver's safety. I've been a fan of this sport for nearly 2 decades and my current opinion of it has never been this low. Primarily because I've never seen this level of inconsistency.. ever. Shades of two years ago, right down to Tony's paint scheme and firesuit. "So that second to last caution was fake?" At this point I can't even remember which one that was. I don't know. There were at least two or three fake ones, from what I could sense. It was just all a massive, unnecessary clusterf**k to throw on the end of this race. The one that actually irritates me the most is actually the one that came out with like 12 to go or whatever it was (the one where Kenseth ended up breaking his axle on pit road). Yes, the one they called when Kurt was clearly driving to the win was some major bullshit, but I felt like we were shaping up to have a GREAT race to the end there with Kenseth, Busch, Harvick, Brad, and Hamlin (before he got his pit penalty) and everyone's uncertain fuel situations. IF their reasoning for that caution was to ensure an exciting finish, then that makes zero sense because it WAS SHAPING UP TO BE A GREAT FINISH. Ugh. Overall, just a really frustrating end to the race on multiple levels. This will definitely go down with Dover 2004 and a few others as some of the worst officiating I've ever seen from them. Sorry I call BS on that by saying that you're admitting that you saw it well before you threw the yellow and chose not to throw even thought you knew it was there... Yeah not buying that. If there was something there (cause I didn't see it) it sounds like you didn't throw it when you first "saw" it because at that point Harvick was all over Kurt and you thought he could pass him. The second Kurt stretched that lead with two left then you threw the yellow. Seems pretty screwy to me. It's obvious that NASCAR threw that caution on lap 199 when it wasn't necessary, I believe because Kurt Busch was about to win the race. Had the incident on the first GWC attempt not taken place, Kurt would have won anyway. However, nobody's mentioned something that happened when Kevin Harvick made his run on Kurt with about three or four laps left in the scheduled distance. He got right on Kurt's bumper, and Kurt slipped in turns one and two. That would have been the perfect opportunity to try to pass him, but instead he got completely out of the throttle, and Kurt got away. I believe that was intentional, that Harvick backed off deliberately to allow Kurt to win and effectively lock up a spot in the Chase. After all, Harvick already has his ticket to the Chase punched with two wins, so what would a third at the expense of a teammate really accomplish? Harvick knew that, so he backed off Kurt to let him win the race. Unfortunately for Harvick and SHR, his plan went up in smoke when that caution flew. Basically what I'm saying is that Harvick had no intention of ever passing Kurt Busch for the win, but instead flowing him home and placing him into the Chase. So basically the fix was in, first from Kevin Harvick by having no intention to pass Kurt for the win and getting his teammate in the Chase, and then from NASCAR when they threw a needless caution on lap 199, basically to prevent Kurt from winning and getting egg all over their faces as a result. I believe the happiest people at Fontana, other than the Penske team, when Brad Keselowski passed Kurt Busch on the final lap, were the higher-ups at NASCAR because of the negative attention a win by Kurt Busch so soon after his reinstatement would have caused. But what happened with Harvick and Kurt Busch late in the race proves this "win and you're in" formula for getting into the chase was a terrible idea. I said last year that something like this was likely to happen, and that a teammate would roll over for another teammate, as Harvick was doing for Kurt Busch, just to get another driver from that organization into the Chase. I also stated as recently as last week's comments page that the cutoff should be much higher than 30th in points for a driver to be eligible if he has a win. After all, Kurt's already risen to 28th in points after just two starts in five races. I think a driver should at least be in the top 25, if not the top 20 to be eligible to get in by winning. That said, it may not be very long before Kurt breaks into the top 20 in points. After all, David Ragan is one of the drivers ahead of him, and all three Roush drivers are also ahead of him, so that's four right there he can pluck off within the next month. And on another subject, how much longer is Gibbs going to stay with David Ragan in the #18 car while Kyle Busch mends? I know the finish was somewhat decent, but this race was an absolute disaster for Ragan. He spun out by himself, and after losing the lap from that incident, he was never competitive, even with the other lapped cars, for most of the rest of the race. It may be high time that Gibbs scrapped that idea. I know Ragan's 15th in points right now, but does anyone really think he can stay in the top 20, because I think he may fall out as early as next week. And I know there are others that feel that it might be high time that Roush puts Chris Buescher in the #17 car for next year, especially considering how he's run in the XFinity Series and actually being competitive to a degree in this race for a back marker team like Front Row Motorsports. I know I might be out on a limb here, but might we see him in the #6 car before too long, possibly before the end of the season? There seems to be major issues with that team that may even go beyond the total ineptitude of Roush Racing. I know there's not a lot of experience with that team, as far as this car is concerned, but there might be something else going on there that we don't know about. I usually don't sound "bells and whistles" so early because I want to give a rookie driver a break, but something seems off about what's happening there, as well. 448. Everything went downhill after the caution with 15 to go and I can't but laugh at how officials managed to cause another massive s**tstorm even though that was not their intention. Well, Richard Buck already made an elaborate explanation of debris cautions policy but this explanation has some holes because of NASCAR inconsistency. Today officials make one call, tomorrow they will make another in exactly the same situation. Inconsistency leads to the loss of credibility hence it's impossible to take races as a fair competition. I am far from thinking that NASCAR wanted to deprive Kurt Busch of the victory but officials caused such a mess, that you can think of this as a very reasonable explanation. I'm of the opinion that the end of the race has to be officiated differently from the rest of the race when it comes to throwing caution flags. Here's where I'm coming from. When it's obvious that a car is throwing fluid on the track or when it obvious that cars are throwing parts on the track, then a caution does have to be thrown. But Buck's explanation doesn't wash with me. He stated that there was "enough confirmation" that there was a piece of debris in turn four, so they turned on the caution lights. That's not good enough. At the end of the race, as Rodger Ward once said regarding Parnelli Jones' controversial oil leak at Indy in 1963, "you'd better be damned sure that you're right" if you're going to throw a debris caution that likely would change the outcome of the race, and judging by those comments, they were not sure they were right, and the debris wasn't obvious, or even shown by the cameras. In a case like that, they should have let the race play out it's natural course, but NASCAR was so concerned about the possible backlash that a win by Kurt Busch would have brought, that they decided to throw the caution at the slightest hint of something on the track. That said, I think an equally sad thing that that caution on lap 199 did prevent from happening was Kevin Harvick throwing the race for his teammate, because he had no intention of ever passing Kurt Busch at the end, short of Kurt having a mechanical or tire problem. Fortunately for Harvick and possibly SHR, Harvick got bailed out by that caution, or we might be talking about a possible race-fixing scandal at SHR right now. 461. But then again, with no Ford teams participating in the Truck Series, aside from Brad Keselowski's team, which is really a driver development arm of Team Penske, there might not be that much of a choice among Ford drivers, though Elliott Sadler certainly would be a viable alternative, given his vast experience and his Ford ties. Darrell Wallace, Jr., while already a winner at Martinsville in the Truck Series, is not experienced enough, in my view, to put in a Cup car, though it would have made for a great story to have a black driver in the #34 car, given how Wendell Scott was inducted into the Hall of Fame in late January (34 was, of course, Scott's car number). The #34 car is also not a high-pressure ride, though David Ragan has done well in that car at Martinsville before. Having Buescher in that car will give him some experience at Martinsville, the one Cup short track that the XFinity Series doesn't race at. As for Brett Moffitt, I'm not sure anyone else caught this, but it was mentioned during the race that Moffitt has now become an official Rookie of the Year candidate, so it makes all the sense in the world to have Moffitt drive as many races as possible. Talladega might be a bit iffy (car owner Michael Waltrip might be a better choice there, anyway), but having him drive the other races makes all the sense in the world, especially now since Moffitt is going to be piling up Rookie of the Year points, in addition to Cup Series points (he's currently 31st after four starts). 464. About the #34, I'm glad that it seems they will be sticking with Chris Buescher for at least another race. Now that Moffitt will be driving the #55 for the foreseeable future (which I'm also really happy about), I think Buescher is definitely their best bet going forward as Ragan's fill-in. Any movement by Kurt, as far as moving down the track went, was more to keep from spinning out and crashing. 475. We need more Onion posted: 03.24.2015 - 4:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wow... I know minor league and Cup's different, but could he crack the top-20 Sunday? 479. If he had the full resources of the #24 like he will next year, it would be a different story. I'd be satisfied if he can finish the race with the car mostly in one piece (nobody brings the car back without a scratch at Martinsville), and use it as a learning experience. 481. I really feel bad for all the drivers, as those dudes are doing everything they can only to have their efforts shat on by the ridiculous NASCAR officiating system at the track. A sprint cup race more closely resembles a game of musical chairs than a professional racing event. As soon as the days dominant drivers get close to a victory, NASCAR stops the music with a yellow flag, leaving the field to scramble for a seat. That's not racing. That's a fookin' JOKE. BOYCOTT NASCAR. STOP GOING TO RACES. STOP WATCHING THE RACES THROUGH THEIR PAID PROGRAMMING. DOWNLOAD THOSE RACES INSTEAD. The only way to get back at NASCAR for their ridiculous approach to race officiating is to hit them in the pocket book. The racers deserve better, and race fans deserve better. 482. racefangurl posted: 03.25.2015 - 3:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) He was literally unbelievable to me last year on his way to the Nationwide (at the time) championship. I'm prone to low expectations in regard to rookies but will try to be as rational and not dumb about this race as I can, so as long as he finishes, that's good. In my thinking, Chase is a talent making his Cup debut at Martinsville with a new team, no more, no less. So no hateful talk, pie or otherwise. But based on what Scott said, I won't ask the world. I may say stupid stuff at times, but I'm not totally dumb. 483. cjs3872 posted: 03.25.2015 - 3:59 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Let's send well wishes to the family of J.D. I had relatives that suffered from Alzheimer's and they got it at an older age and didn't get speech problems either like J.D. Gibbs has right now. The other reason is doubt is Alzheimer's due to the fact Doctor's claimed heading injuries that J.D. Gibbs suffered earlier in life that is causing him brain issues. 488. The man didn't suffer from speech problems early in life like stuttering. People who suffer from Alzheimer's was able to talk, but their minds were not sound at all by them being easily confused, can't remember, or other stuff like comprehending what age the person is. 489. cjs3872 posted: 03.25.2015 - 7:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Well, whatever caused J.D.'s situation, I think everyone associated with Joe Gibbs Racing, NASCAR, the NFL, and the Washington Redskins, who Joe Gibbs, JD.'s father, led to four Super Bowls, winning three, certainly wish him the best, as we all do. And as I indirectly stated in post #483, despite whatever controversies arose from the race at Fontana just this past Sunday, this situation puts that and all the other sporting events going on in their proper perspective. Those are just games, races, tournaments, etc. What J.D.'s dealing with is far more serious than any game, race, or tournament could ever be. 490. He was one of those people that I thought could keep long-running teams, such as Joe Gibbs Racing and Richard Childress Racing, going when their long-time car owners are no longer able to lead them. With guys like J.D. Gibbs and Mike Dillon, I felt JGR and RCR were in good hands for the next generation, or even two, when Joe Gibbs and Richard Childress were no longer able to run things. The same is true regarding the Wood Brothers, as they seem to be putting more and more of their operation into the hands of Jon Wood, as Eddie and Len aren't getting any younger, either. But other long-time teams, such as Roush Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, Richard Petty Motorsports, which used to be Petty Enterprises, Team Penske, and others who helped usher in the boom that NASCAR has (or had) enjoyed for three decades, don't have succession plans in place. Hendrick had one in place, but it was lost in the 2004 pane crash near Martinsville, but I don't think the other teams I mentioned really have a plan of succession in place when their current team owners are no longer able to run their operations. That's one reason why I worry about the future of the sport. Sure, teams like Stewart-Haas Racing, Chip Ganassi Racing, and Michael Waltrip Racing have owners that should be around for a while, and only Childress, the Wood Brothers, and Joe Gibbs Racing (Coy could step in for J.D. when Joe's no longer able to run things if J.D. can't, so I'm not really worried there) having plans of succession in place, with so many other teams with such venerable car owners not having a plan of succession in place, and not nearly enough teams to replace them should they go, NASCAR could be in for a shortfall of teams, as well as drivers within 5-7 years, if not sooner. That's why I'm a little worried about the future of the sport. 493. joey2448 posted: 03.27.2015 - 2:04 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) cjs, there's no need to be worried.
