Front row lockout by Stewart-Haas as his teammate Kevin Harvick starts second. Doesn't this weekend look familiar to Auto Club three weeks ago? Jimmie Johnson has four wins at Texas (including the most recent race last November, which he dominated) but all of them have come in the fall race during the Chase. Will he break that streak? Man I like the look of that 21 Wood Brothers Ford! Ryan Blaney has had a good weekend so far, he was sixth-fastest in final practice on Friday and then nearly made the final round of qualifying, settling instead for 13th on the grid. Roush-Fenway Racing still isn't up to par with the top teams, but it's much better than where they were. They seem to have made a significant leap in speed this weekend. Greg Biffle qualified 19th, with Stenhouse Jr. and Bayne 22nd and 23rd, respectively. Casey Mears qualified 20th, but was ranked fourth and fifth in both Friday practice sessions. Here's hoping he's fast again Saturday night. My darkhorses for the win: Kasey Kahne (sounds weird saying that) and Jamie Mac. 4. This is his first pole in the Haas #41 Chevrolet. HOWEVER he's only won from the pole once, Homestead way back in 2002 (the race where he drove a Little Tykes #97 Ford painted to look like a Cozy Coupe). 8. posted: 04.10.2015 - 8:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Kurt Busch tallies the 17th pole of his career and his first since Darlington back in 2013. I haven't changed my stance on Kurt any, but I'm also not for rigging races, as I mentioned on that same Fontana page when NASCAR seemed to be doing everything in its power to prevent Kurt from winning. But if you believe that my calling a spade a spade is me getting my panties in a knot, hey, that's up to you. 10. Blaney has indeed looked good all weekend. Maybe this will be his breakout Cup race." Yeah, at this point it's "anyone except Harvick" for me. Kurt *might* be the lone exception, and even then it's pretty close. The more I think about it, the more I like what Penske is doing with Blaney. They're letting him learn from multiple different avenues, but at the same time allowing him to put some focus on learning the Cup side of the equation. Whereas if he had driven a full-time Xfinity schedule, he would have been focused on learning those cars (which frankly, I think he's already done, considering his results). So I honestly wouldn't be shocked if he's running full-time in Cup next year. I hope so, because that would be quite the rookie battle between him and Chris Buescher (assuming he moves up, which he will; I also expect Ty Dillon and maybe even Brian Scott to make the jump next year). 11. (I think that's a Bennyism, right?) 2) I have been a longtime lurker for a long time on racing-reference and have read a lot of people bashing races at Texas. (This is my first post.) 3) This race in person was a lot better than what was shown on television. The debris cautions early in the race were bogus. I also think it's fair to say the cautions that were called for some of the incidents in past eras of NASCAR wouldn't have been called. It is what it is, but in today's NASCAR a lot of things are done for "safety". (We get "safety" debris cautions for gimmicky excitement at mile and halves a good bit of the time. The truth hurts, right?) 4) It was amazing to see these cars at full speed. There is nothing like it. TV doesn't do it justice. The roar of the engines and the sound is something you have to experience at least once in your life. 5) To talk about the race itself, the first 100 laps were kind of boring as the field was obviously spread out. It seemed as if the drivers were mostly just trying to hang on until it was dark. 6) Matt Kenseth's spin and troubles were surprising. He usually runs pretty well at Texas. I guess it was an off night. 7) I also was impressed with Dale Jr.'s run. At certain times in the race, he was a lot faster compared to Jimmie. If the battle for 2nd between Harvick and Junior was for the lead, I think everyone on here would have been jumping up and down excited. 8) As much as it pains me to say it (most won't give him the credit), Jimmie Johnson deserved to win this race. He has made Texas here lately seem like he was driving at Lowe's Motor Speedway back in the early 2000s. (Yes, I know it is Charlotte Motor Speedway, but Johnson's dominance was on it when it was sponsored by Lowe's.) 9) I'm curious as to how many people with Hendrick power are running setups similar to Harvick's. It's something worth investigating how much info is being spread amongst all the teams. 10) On a personal note, while I don't enjoy seeing Jimmie Johnson win a race I can appreciate it. It makes my younger autistic brother extremely happy. He is a die-hard Johnson fan. I don't understand the liking or love people have for J.J. I will say 72 wins and counting can cause everyone to acknowledge he's a good driver. The major problem is that the Chase era does a disservice to all the drivers, as we don't get a full grasp of their true abilities. A driver's greatness now is more based upon happenstance or circumstance thanks in part to NASCAR's manipulations to promise a "good show". 294. Really? Nope, nope and nope, nowhere NEAR the worst driver ever. Not even in the top ten. There is bad and then there is RANCID, there is rancid so foul that even Foul Ole Ron's Smell wouldn't have anything to do with it, and while Steve does fall into the first category he is decidedly not in the second, whereas ol' Hideo put down stakes and claimed territory in the latter. 311. 23andJoe posted: 04.15.2015 - 5:42 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) >I'm just wondering, if someone can answer this please do, how come Honda and Subaru have never got involved in Nascar? There have been occasional rumbles about Honda, but stock cars simply haven't caught their interest yet I suppose. Subaru isn't a big enough company to really get into it. That said, Johanna Long has driven a Subaru-badged SLM in the last couple of Snowball Derbies - of course, Donald Theetge from Quebec is the king of this sort of thing, having driven in the Serie ACT-Castrol in cars badged as Hondas for a couple of years, then Acura, and most recently Mercedes! But, beneath the decals, they've all been (based on window and body shape) standard Chevy bodies. Of course in dirt there's an even wilder variety of "badge jobs" on the standard bodies; Dennis Franklin's #2 is badged as a Lexus, Jim Manka has a car emblazoned as a Hyundai Genesis, "Cadillacs" are downright common, FERRARI styled nosepieces and badge-jobs are standard items in catalogues, and I've even seen at least two cars over the last few years that had headlight, grille and badge logos of...BENTLEY. 312. In fact, Toyota sells the same car as the Scion FR-S in the U.S. 314. DB1995 posted: 04.15.2015 - 4:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I have seen a Lamborghini badged Dirt late model on facebook 315. There was speculation Honda would follow Toyota into NASCAR, but Honda never had any enthusiasm for it. They (like many Asian and European based manufacturers) don't go for the low tech approach NASCAR takes, to them the value of racing is more about R&D for technology that could someday trickle down to mass production. 23andJoe nailed the answer about Subaru... they really just don't have the budget for it. Volkswagen has had some meetings with NASCAR reps, but nothing serious. Hyundai was also reported to be interested, but they put a lot of money into Kia and may be in the same fix as Subaru, not ready to invest that much cash in going stock car racing. They do seem more interested in the marketing aspect of racing, though, and appreciate what it could do for sales in America. But, I don't see any new manufacturers right on the verge of jumping in for the next few years. 317. If they wanted in I'm sure NASCAR would find a way. 318. racefangurl posted: 04.15.2015 - 10:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Steve Wallace could be better if he wasn't so out of control, perhaps. 319.
