Kahne was also fastest in Friday's practice session. On the other hand, the Penske Fords and Gibbs Toyotas are both looking fast. And great individual qualifying runs by Justin Allgaier in 15th (his best start of the season), Landon Cassill in 17th, Michael McDowell in 19th and Matt DiBenedetto in 22nd. 3. Allgaier's first top 10 is a long time coming and he has been very competitive in the past weeks. Cassill, well, everyone knows how talented he is and certainly capable of great results, this could just become one. McDowel did an amazing job last year as well, probably he did not forget to drive and the car is the exact same car he used last autumn so it is not bad either. DiBenedetto... I want to see him do well and this is the 1st time he shows his potential in the total junk he is stuck with. GO MATT! 5. Pucci Man posted: 04.17.2015 - 7:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) This was one crazy qualifying. Turn 4 hurt a bunch of people, big names starting 20th or worse, and great starting spots for Allgaier, Cassill, McDowell, and DiBenedetto. This should be a very interesting race. Glad Jimmie is starting in the back. He should always start in the back, so any driver can lead some laps before he ruins the race. Not glad that Alex Kennedy is in the race. He is a HUGE WASTE OF TIME! He can't even drive a damn race car. 6. Sarf52 posted: 04.17.2015 - 7:46 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Bristol is a great track for drivers in junk to show their ability. Track is more about the driver than the car. DiBenedetto, McDowell, and Cassill all have the chance to prove they belong on one of the big teams by bringing home top 10s here after excellent qualifying runs 7. Promising news. Also, the weather does not look good. I know anything can change, but this does not look promising. The current hour by hour forecast calls for early thundershowers from 7:30 to 11 PM, but that won't affect anything. The real issue is rain starting at 6 AM, which will start as a 60% chance and rise to around 90-100% by race time. Chance will still be around 70% until 7 PM, which will turn into thunderstorms. Isolated and Scattered thunder will continue until 7 AM. Monday looks better, but more thunder will begin around 2 PM. So it's looking like the race will run on Monday morning. 28. racefangurl posted: 04.18.2015 - 9:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (5) As nascarfemale.com's Trevor Bayne OFR, I need to watch the race, if there's any way I can. Why not let AT LEAST the first 5/10 rows go as follows: first can choose lane as they do now, second can then choose either lane as well, etc all the way back. That way if one lane is such an advantage, the top three cars could all choose to start in that lane and maybe fourth decides to be first in the non-preferred lane. Then there is as fair of a selection as possible, people aren't braking as hard as possible at the exit of the pits to lose spots, etc. and restarts make much more sense. At least to me 507. One from a tv and scheduling standpoint and one from a race standpoint. First the race standpoint: This race towards the end made it really exciting to watch. Top 10 finish for Austin Dillon. If only he didn't spin his tires towards the finish on the late restart, I easily could've seen him pick up a top five based on the strong run he was having. Also congrats to the the other possible upsets on picking up a top ten: Stenhouse Jr, Larson, and Allgaier. I didn't mention Danica only because this is usually not one of her better tracks and her run last night was all based on luck, imo. Otherwise, she ran well tonight and ended up with a top ten. The finish itself even was cool to watch. Congrats to Kenseth on the win. Also congrats to Jeff Gordon for picking up a top five. If only there had been a few more laps, he easily could've beat Jimmie for second, maybe even win the race. Who knows. Otherwise the finish for second last night reminded me so much of the finish for first at Martinsville Spring 2007 when, like last night, Johnson bested Gordon. Other honorable mentions for top 10's include Ryan Newman for his top five and Tony Stewart for his top 10 on his first race back at Bristol since this race last year. Next the tv and schedule standpoint: The race itself along with the Xfinity Spring race should be moved to Saturday night and Friday night respectively. By that I mean picking a date that would still allow for a cost saving effort in transportation and other logistical factors and at the same time allowing the broadcast network FOX to televise the spring CUP race without running into scheduling conflicts with other FOX SPORTS properties, be it on the broadcast network or FOX SPORTS 1. This is the second year in a row in which cord cutters don't get to see the finish. Even though I, like most of us here on RR, pay for tv, you still have to wonder how cord cutters feel that they now have to wait til next year to see a Bristol race. 538. Not as good as Allgaier, but finally the curse Annett seems to have this year took it easier. He wrecked, but still managed to earn a much needed 23rd place finish. Although her speed did not warrant a top 10 at all, Danica did nicely to avoid all the carnage and somehow get into 9th. NASCAR is working on getting her in a good position, but it is evident that she made a HUGE improvement on this track, because we all remember how she used to be a rolling roadblock, which certainly was not the case this time. It breaks my heart that Bryson Burns won't have his father there for much of his life. Here's wishing his family the best in both this very trying time and the years ahead. 570. joey2448 posted: 04.21.2015 - 4:07 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Boy, even when you think you're prepared to hear the news, you're not. That wasn't the case with Steve Byrnes. The entirety of the NASCAR community was backing and cheering for him in his fight during these many months, and we've made sure to let him know about it. I hope all that was a solace and comfort to him then, and his family now as they deal with this immeasurable burden. My fondest memory of Steve(in addition to all his fine work on telecasts) was hearing about his stories of Dale Earnhardt being "playful" with him in various ways. Byrnes slip-up on TNN's coverage of the 2000 Dura Lube KMART 400, a forgivable lapse. 'Hey get it right! They were the National Champs in basketball, FEAR the Turtle!'--Steve Byrnes referencing his alma mater, University of Maryland referencing Donnie Neuenberger's University of Maryland ride at the Koolerz 300 in 2003. 'This is the first time I've never heard a crew chief tell a lie'--Byrnes speaking to a carboard cut-out of suspended crew chief Brian Pattie, who worked for Nemco Motorsports at the time in 2004. 'Ricky Rudd has a point, a Sears Point to prove'--2001 Save Mart 300. 'I got me, myself, and I and that's all I need'--quoting Tony Stewart at the end of the 2005 Daytona 500. 'It's like riding a steel wheel skateboard'--2003 Koolerz 300, quoting Jimmy Vasser making his first Busch start. "They changed everything but the four tires on that car!"--quoting a ill-handling race car. Statement: I don't like to speak negative of the dead, but Steve was never my cup of tea as an analyst, but underneath all of that he seemed like a very dedicated family man, when they named him after the race, I kind of knew he would not be long for this earth. That's not to take away from the fight and courage that he showed during his fight and the type of man he was. I never had the privilege of knowing Steve, but he seemed like a good neighbor and a good friend and my issues with his broadcasting style aside, I send my condolences out to his family friends and colleagues at Fox Sports. The quotes above are in memory of him. 580. racefangurl posted: 04.21.2015 - 9:37 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) I wonder if they'll honor him somehow at Richmond this weekend. 581. Rick Hendrick shouldn't be in be in yet due to the fact I don't see Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne and Dale Jr stop winning after this season. I don't like Buddy Baker being in the top 5 while Bobby Isaac didn't get a single vote. Buddy Baker in his era had a lot of majors despite only having 19 cup and I know spend a lot of time in NASCAR after his driver days. I don't think Bobby Isaac should be penalized for dying of a heart attack in his mid 40's and couldn't an impact outside of being a driver as a result. He died of a heart attack while racing matter of fact. I didn't like Burton Smith being 7th out of 20 in this poll at all due to the fact he didn't help matters for the decline of NASCAR by closing 2 race tracks. Alan getting the amount votes from a poll is something I am iffy about. Alan deserves to get in, but when gets in is the question. The people used in the poll still remember Alan from one way or another before his death unlike a lot of people who weren't fans of NASCAR at the time of Alan's Death. What I am iffy about timing is due to Alan being Cup Champion in 1992. 589. The poll used 50 people in the media and 50 people in the garage. Rick Hendrick and former champion Alan Kulwicki tied with the most votes at 15. Former champion and broadcaster Benny Parsons was next with 13 votes, followed by former drivers Buddy Baker (10 votes) and Curtis Turner (nine). The next five were Mark Martin (seven votes), track owner Bruton Smith (seven), former champion Red Byron (six) and two-time champion Terry Labonte (three). The rest of the nominees included Richard Childress (two votes), Jerry Cook (two), Harry Hyde (two), Larry Phillips (two), Robert Yates (two), Ray Evernham (one), Ray Fox (one), Hershel McGriff (one), Raymond Parks (one), Mike Stefanik (one) and Bobby Isaac (zero). 590. racefangurl posted: 04.22.2015 - 10:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 587, it's ironic they died after being honored. 591. At the time North Wilkesboro closed, NASCAR still had quite a few years of no-end-in-sight growth yet, Rockingham might be a better case, but still, it kept growing after that. It's the hall of /fame/, not the hall of /stats/ or the hall of /popularity/ - whether we like him or not, Bruton belongs there. 593. Remember Burton Smith allowed the levigation of Charlotte Motorspeedway to happen and that caused problems in 2005 for both cup points races there. Bruton Smith was responsible for turning Bristol from a track that need a waiting list to get tickets to a track that has problems selling out by Bristol's reconfiguration. Bruton Smith was responsible for the mess in terms of the first ever Kentucky Motorspeedway cup race. Bruton knew ahead of time that there was going to be parking and traffic problems for the race, but he didn't do a thing about. Parking was Bruton's fault because the track ran out of parking spots. Texas Motor Speedway is another track that is owned by Bruton Smith that had problems in its first cup race due to multiple flaws. The first flaw to TSM was the track itself was designed with a flaw for racing that made it not safe to race and changes to be made to the transitions of the track since Rusty Wallace even said that Turn 4 was too narrow. There was other problems with the tracking itself including draining problems that caused weepers go on the track surface, duel banking that was forced to be turned into uniform banking. There also was terrible traffic plans for the race track. Yes, Burton Smith fixed those problems with TMS. The thing is the track wasn't ready for racing in 1997 and that was on Burton Smith since there was poor track design from a safety standpoint, but yet bought a race track get to take away a date from a track that wasn't ready to have a race day. 597. racefangurl posted: 04.23.2015 - 5:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The Bristol date change means the short track fans have a real treat. 598.
