After all, Dale, Sr. scored 10 of his 76 wins there, including three of his final five (both races in 1999 and his epic charge in the fall race in 2000), and Dale, Jr. now has six wins, fully one-quarter of his total of 24, easily his highest win total at any one track. So it was fitting that Dale, Jr. got win #100 for the Earnhardt family in the Cup Series at Talladega. The lone big crash of the day, which started when Trevor Bayne lost it when Kurt Busch and Paul Menard tried to go four wide around him with a car already on the inside (there was no contact between the 6 and either the 27 or 41 cars at the beginning of that incident), makes one wonder whether or not more spoiler should be added to the cars at the plate tracks. They were talking about how hard the cars have become to drive on the STRAIGHTAWAYS due to the lower downforce, much less in the corners and S/F mini-turn, which is the hardest place to drive at speed. The shorter spoiler was put on the cars a few years ago to combat the smoother pavement at the plate tracks. But now that the asphalt has aged, it might be time for NASCAR to add between one-half inch to an inch on the rear spoilers to compensate for the loss of grip to make the cars less jittery around the track when they're in a bunch. And while those have derived the lack of action late in the race, with the last segment of the race being mostly single-file around the top, has anyone given thought to the fact that the mere fact that they were on the top had quite a bit to do with the lack of movement. The exact same problem exists at Bristol, as far as being able to complete a pass, because the high line is so much faster than the low line is. Trying to make a pass there isn't that much different from trying to make a pass on a plate track. However, even with Dale, Jr.'s win, the story of the race was Ryan Blaney in the Wood Brothers car, as he nearly gave them their first win in the Talladega spring race since they won it four times in a row from 1971-'74 (once with Donnie Allison and then three years in a row with David Pearson). But his inexperience likely caught up to him, as Denny Hamlin made a move late, and only the assistance from Sam Hornish, Jr. kept him from plummeting through the field in the final miles. And by the way, even though it wasn't with the #43, how good was it to see the Petty team and the Wood Brothers team up late in a race on a big track? And by the way, it was nice to see some of the teams that usually run in the back get good finishes. That usually happens on the plate tracks, but there seemed to be a few more of those smaller teams finish in the top 15-18 than usual in this one. Even BK Racing got in on the act, with the runs of J.J. Yeley and Matt DiBenedetto, as well as Tommy Baldwin Racing with Alex Bowman. 479. 23andJoe posted: 05.03.2015 - 7:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) >> "If I was Johnson, I'd have dumped Junior, or at least tried." >Lol if you did that the only way you would have left the track was in a body bag... I don't think you'll ever get a better interview for a win which mattered so much, you could tell it was real emotional for him to win with Greg Ives and his primary sponsor Nationwide Insurance who stepped up in the National Guard's departure. --To those who felt the final laps were disgusting, I agree but that's just the way the tire rolls, sometimes you get a good finish, sometimes you get one like you had today, when you are single file, you can't do a lot of passing if nobody goes with you and nobody could make a move, and if you did, you were going to get passed. Jimmie Johnson at least acted as a teammate here and helped push to Junior to this win, if it was any other time like 2006, he would have blown by Junior to try to win the race himself but nobody could make any moves. --Still, kudos to NASCAR to let them race back, there wasn't any cars hitting the wall so it was okay. I don't care WHO wins the race or under what circumstances they won; NO driver deserves to have garbage rained down upon them after winning a race. It's totally classless and shows a complete lack of respect. I should be clear that I have been a Gordon fan ever since I was very small (since '95 to be precise). And for the record, I do NOT think Gordon is perfect. He has done some things over the years I can't stand by (most specifically, his retaliation against Bowyer back at Phoenix a couple of years...I actually legitimately thought about giving UP being a fan of his because of that). Even so, I still remain a fan of his anyways, and I will miss seeing him on the track after this year. And I'm not bummered out that he lost out on a shot to win the race yesterday. He spend on pit road, big deal. He's only a human being; all humans are prone to making mistakes. You know what? In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter. It's only a race. Whether or not Gordon does well has no effect on my personal life. I obviously would LIKE to see him do well every race, but if he doesn't? Oh well. You can't win 'em all. Wouldn't it be boring to see your favorite driver win EVERY race? I understand that Gordon has some bad eggs in his fandom...but so does Junior. Every driver with a least a semi-decent fanbase has a few whackos among the numbers that stand out because they're (of course) usually the most vocal in the group. I really hope you don't actually think ALL of Gordon's fan are a bunch of pathetic whiners. Certainly some are like this, true (I have definitely seen my fair share of nutty Gordon fans), but it isn't fair to assume they're ALL like that...Like I said, I legitimately have respect for Junior even if I'm not a big fan of his, even if I don't like the bad eggs among his fandom (the ones who threw garbage at Gordon when he won, like I mentioned), I don't harbor any ill will towards Junior fans. I'm not looking for an argument or a fight...I'm a pretty non-combative individual, so even if you tried to egg me into a fight I'd just ignore it anyways (I see online arguments as often being a waste of time). I don't have a major gripe with him for the most part. I think the biggest complaint I've had with Gordon fans is that whenever they (in my experience) level some accusation at Dale Jr., once I defend him I get hit with "Oh you'd defend him for anything!" and garbage like that. But to your point, there are good Gordon fans and bad Gordon fans like there are with every driver. I just have personally interacted with a lot of disrespectful Gordon fans in my experiences as being a longtime Earnhardt fan. I'm cool with ribbing one another (a coworker of mine and I always went back-and-forth over this and had fun with it), it's just that I get insulted pretty easily by many of them just for being a Dale Jr. fan and that's pretty annoying. 514. I believe you're taking this one a bit too seriously, brother. Also, try not to be so thin-skinned as to refer to me saying Hinchcliffe is annoying as being "inappropriate." And if you're gonna send me walls of text wholly unrelated to the original discussion, of which your argument has been strawman or nothing, try to limit it to just one response. Oh, and Dale Jr. speeding down pit road in 2009 had absolutely nothing to do with Sunday's race. Nothing whatsoever. That's not denying reality. That's called being realistic, a trait in which you've already been found lacking. But it's been fun to go tit-for-tat. Let's agree to disagree. I actually like that move. I still don't see Hornish doing anything noteworthy this year, but I won't be surprised if he starts running a little bit better. Manion is a very solid crew chief (I'd go as far to say maybe one of the most underrated in Cup), and Blickensderfer has always been a quite mediocre crew chief (and probably one of the worst I've ever seen at dialing out race cars - those years he was with Kenseth and Burton were extremely frustrating for me as a fan of those two). So smart move by RPM to make that change here. 530. David posted: 05.05.2015 - 5:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Blickensderfer has always been a quite mediocre crew chief" Agreed. Since then, he's only won one other race as a crew chief (the July Daytona race with David Ragan in 2011). 531. Debris cautions and GWCs aren't "Incredibly artificial." When i think of "Incredibly artficial", it would be things like giving drivers faulty equipment to keep them out of victory, races with predetermined outcomes (WWE), a random draw for the champion (Or even worse, a fanvoted champion), reality TV style gimmicks, and others.
