I'm sad to see McDowell and his low-budget team, which did well here on occasion, go home instead of the #62 which is hopeless even in Daytona. Well, at least the #62 has a good hand behind the wheel in Gaughan. Truex, Hamlin, Gordon, Kurt, Harvick and the Penskes will all have to start in the region where things tend to happen. 6. I mean at Atlanta this year they had him go over an do interviews at the supercross race while Joey ran the Xfinity race. They're the ones who'd rather have an established cup driver in their car. If they didn't I'm sure Ryan would be driving the 22 every week. 15. While I think they did try, there's no way they put in the effort they did for Hornish back in 2012 to get him full time. That being said Sponsors are probably gonna be more willing to jump on a former Indy 500 winner (even if he isn't that good in stock cars) rather than a talented kid who doesn't have the name value outside of the sport. 17. I wouldn't say Junior lucked out by qualifying getting rained out; I don't know if he would have won the pole, but I'm certain he would have got a good starting spot, and there's no doubt he's going to be a major factor in the race. Rick Allen is good as the lead announcer, and Burton and Letarte seem to work pretty well on commentary; neither of them came off as obnoxious and they were both quite informative. Among the things they did that I liked... -They actually mentioned every driver during the starting lineup and THEN interviewed one of the driver as opposed to just giving the front runners and then spending the rest of that time on an interview -Their graphics package is pretty good; I think their scoring ticker looks a lot better than FOX's -They actually spent more time talking about some of the backmarkers (for instance, Bobby Gerhart spun in the opening laps, and they actually did spend a bit of time talking about him) -They had CONSIDERABLY more side-by-side coverage during commercials then FOX has over the past few years' If this is a preview of what we can expect to see from their coverage for the rest of the year, it seems pretty promising! 25. racefangurl posted: 07.05.2015 - 1:27 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) TLS, I missed the July 4th NASCAR action, myself. I think a combinations of things happened to CJS3872. The first thing is I don't think he liked the fact he was corrected by claiming Jeff Gordon's team was on the only team near front of the field pitted, when his statement was proved to be false. Although, we'll see how Danica hyped they are tonight. I'm hoping they don't throw her on a shiny pedestal every week like FOX does. And I'm sure this group will do fine. But of course they aren't Benny Parsons, and even Weber and Bestwick. Anyhoo...whenever this race gets started, I'm sure it'll be a decent show. Maybe the idea of rain around will put the drivers in a racier mode or something. As for who I'm rooting for tonight (as somebody with no particular favorite cup driver.) Larson, Allmendinger or even Allgaier to win so they can insert themselves in the chase. 56. joey2448 posted: 07.05.2015 - 7:22 pm Rate this comment: (2) (1) While is race is still in prerace and with a wet track on top of that... In other words, NO SERIES can claim this. Why can't she just say "the best stock car drivers in the world", which I'd agree with? Steve Letarte - "When you think of anybody that's been inducted into the Hall of Fame, their Daytona stats are included." Shouldn't the stats at EVERY TRACK be included? And shortly after that, Rick Allen just referred to Burton and Letarte as "legends". They were both just pretty good, not legendary. But it seems like their production is better. Don't get me wrong, I DO like the fact that at tracks like Daytona or Talladega, anybody has a shot to win, but the downside is you can have somebody win and punch their ticket to the Chase who will just take up space and quickly be eliminated in the first round when another driver might have done more... 128. If there isn't non-stop action every second, they will quickly lose interest. I can easily imagine a lot of modern day fans would be absolutely bored to TEARS watching '80s/'90s NASCAR in which races would often go green for a long time without hokey cautions to bunch the field back up and you would see the winner lap most of the rest of the field. It's no wonder that NASCAR has gimmicked everything up as of late...unfortunately, THAT is what it takes to get their interest...A rain delay is about the worst thing you can have with those kinds of fans because they don't want to sit through that. 135. racefangurl posted: 07.05.2015 - 10:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 118, DB1995 is like MAR and me. Some people actually hated TNT's coverage just BECAUSE they had him as a commentator. I know this might be controversial, but I also don't think the King himself was a good commentator. He won a single road course race when Marcos Ambrose made his Darwin Award winning move to shut his car off uphill under caution allowing Johnson to inherit the lead. He also failed to win the 24 Hours of Daytona when several Cup drivers considered inferior to him have actually won it (even Casey Mears). He would get creamed in F1. Kyle Busch making the Chase and proceeding to make the final four at Homestead would be the PERFECT illustration of the problems of this Chase system. (Of course, if Kyle doesn't make it, I wouldn't be surprised if NASCAR changed the system to "win and you're in, no matter what") Really, if they're going to use a system like this, I think the cut-off to get in with a win should be 20th, not 30th. Most of the drivers dislike this style of racing. NASCAR keeps pushing the package to incite more pack racing, and, consequently, more huge wrecks. I understand it's been around since the sport's inception -- I'm not saying Daytona and Talladega need to be scrapped all together. I'm saying give me one race at Daytona and one race at Talladega per year. That's it. This plate racing stuff is getting ridiculous to the point where it's infuriating. All the cars safety systems worked as designed, front and rear clips crumbled or destroyed completely thus helped to ease the impact forces. But: Only because of pure good luck any of the parts of the catch fence didn't penetrate #3 drivers compartment and do all sorts of vicious things to a driver. Russell Phillips lost his head when his car struck catch fencing at Charlotte in 1995. I feel that the catch fence is still the most dangerous part to crash into, to drivers and fans. And NASCAR needs to reconsider tracks and races that are bound to generate situations where vehicles might travel into a catch fence. It baffles me why NASCAR keeps going at these tracks as short tracks produce both safe and interesting racing to both drivers and fans. 824. someone posted: 07.06.2015 - 12:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 560: I know I'm late, but how has Carl Edwards "run like crap" all season? After all, Austin's engine and transmission *weren't even in the car*. Brad had already slowed a bunch and lost it under the brakes. We saw people self spin under braking during pretty much every wreck last night, but in this situation, I'd have to think that the fluid on the track played a major role. As far as the race for the win is considered, I do have to say that Dale Jr's ability to control his own destiny up front in these races is pretty incredible. He has a phenomenal understanding of the air and what he has to do to give him his best chance to win. He really, really knows what he's doing and is completely aware and it shows. Very thankful that all are okay after a crash which was simply horrifying to see live. I hope everyone's okay. I read that four fans were treated on site and one was brought to the hospital in stable condition. I don't know the extent of his/her injuries but hopefully it's a very brief hospital stay. One thing that I'm debating in my mind is if it would have been more dangerous had Austin hid a fence that gave less. The fence actually giving absorbs impact, but hitting one of the supports after he was far into the fence is what made his car come to a stop, which probably made the crash far more dangerous. I honestly think that if there was less give overall, there would have been less Gs being absorbed by the driver, less debris potentially hurting fans, but is that even realistic to build out of something as narrow as a fence? I really don't know, but this is an issue that continues to be a problem at Daytona and Talladega, and I'm not a huge fan of the type of racing we have at those two tracks. 829. John Royal posted: 07.06.2015 - 1:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) From replay it looks like that #3 car got airborne because it was suddenly turned sideways and the underside was lifted up from rushing turbulent higher pressure air generated by 4-5 wide row of cars. Without that front group of cars I doubt that the Dillons car would have lifted. One cause for the high top/rear pressure of the cars is high front downforce, as it forces the air to rush over and around the cars and not let some of it go under the car. #825: I think your suggestion is the best, ideally cars should be designed so that air passes under the car with similar pressure from all the possible angles, front, side and rear. In comparison, I think that the pre-COT cars were the worst in this regard as they had quite a lot front downforce, but huge opening at the rear. Whenever those cars turned around quickly, they went up as the rear clip collected huge pocket of air. 830. Anonymous posted: 07.06.2015 - 1:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) What a race. I would say this crash was worse than Bodine's in the first Daytona Truck race because at least that car kept flipping and dissipating energy after hitting the fence. The front of the 11 was pretty much a ramp and after Austin hit it he started to get air. Then he got hit again by the 15 and the 55. That's what turned the car sideways and put it higher in the air allowing it to go into the fence. Honestly if he doesn't get hit by the 15 and the 55 all he probably does is a long wheelie down the track before he comes back down on all four wheels. 835. 88&4Fan posted: 07.06.2015 - 2:43 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Currently watching the replay on NBCSN. The ones at the end now are always worse, but taking away the GWC wont change that. They only went one lap over the limit in this race. No GWC and it would have been a one lap shootout it still could of happened. Also knowing NASCAR, they would just start using the red flag at the end of these races again. Heck if there was no GWC they probably would have used it in this race after Hornish's crash. Yeah maybe taking away the GWC will prevent one or two of these finishes from happening, but NASCAR will still find a way to end these races in short stints which ups the drivers aggression which is the real cause for these wrecks. 865. 88&4Fan posted: 07.07.2015 - 5:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) Well I was certainly right with my comments early in the race about Hamlin driving too aggressively, since he ended up causing the big one at the end. 866. joey2448 posted: 07.07.2015 - 5:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) My best suggestion to help quell some of the last-lap crashes on GWC finishes at plate track is to go back to single-file restarts, just on the two plate tracks. Double-file restarts work well at most places, but when you pack the field into 2-by-2 and on down the line, it's just begging for a horrible crash. Go back and watch some late-race restarts back in the day, and I think you'll find there's still a level of excitement there, since the lead car can't break away. Also, NASCAR announced today that a higher downforce aero package will be implemented at Indianapolis and Michigan. Tonight was his last radio show on Sirius. Buddy Baker, whose storytelling and friendly demeanor made him a fan favorite, announced Tuesday night that a "huge tumor" in his lung is cancerous and inoperable and he is leaving his role as a co-host of SirusXM NASCAR Radio, effective immediately. "For those who feel sorry, hey I'm 74 years old, have great friends, had a career," he said on "The Late Shift" on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. "The toughest part for me is not being able to talk to some of our regulars that are almost like family. "There comes a time when you talk to the doctor and say what are my chances and there's a dead silence. I went how long. "Well, we don't own the hotel, we don't know when we check out. It's something that we cannot fix." Baker then added: "Do not shed a tear. Give a smile when you say my name. I'm not saying goodbye. Just talk to you later." Baker was on the air for about 40 minutes Tuesday and took calls from fans and some in the sport. "I just want to say goodbye to everyone," Baker said before signing off. "Thanks for being a friend." The 74-year-old Baker won 19 races in what is now the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, including the 1980 Daytona 500. He made his series debut in 1959 and ran his final Cup race in 1992. Along with his Daytona 500, Baker won the 1970 Southern 500, what is now the Coca-Cola 600 in 1968, '72 and '73. He was named one of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers in 1998. He also became the first driver to exceed 200 mph on a closed course when he did it in 1970 at Talladega Superspeedway. The son of NASCAR Hall of Famer Buck Baker, the 6-foot-6 Baker was known as the "Gentle Giant" during his racing days. That same friendly style endeared him to fans when he worked on television after retiring. He served as a broadcaster for TNN and CBS. He started with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio in 2007. 872. The current cars can take a licking and still be fast at plate tracks. Kyle Busch stayed with the pack after damaging his car, and Danica Patrick did too until she got more damage and took it to the garage. A bit counter-intuitive, since you'd think the biggest, fastest tracks would be the hardest places to stay on pace with a wounded racecar. As long as you don't lose that draft, though, you're OK. 881. What's interesting is I found a tape of the 1993 Diehard 500 where Neil Bonnett walked away from a scary crash that ripped a hole in Talladega's catch fence. As bad as Austin's crash looked with the car flipping everywhere, you have to give credit to the safety of these cars, and the way they protect the driver. The way the car is assembled as far as safety is for crashes like this. People want to go so far as to eliminate plate racing or change it. Racing has a lot of risks and that is part of it, but wrecks like these are somewhat inevitable and when you strap into one of these cars, you own the risk of crashing because of those high speeds. I think it takes a special breed to race at high speeds, that is what these guys live for. 882. I am obviously speaking from a fans perspective, I would never be brave enough to race like that. However I don't know what else NASCAR can do. They already made the catch fence higher than it was, and if the drivers think there is anything NASCAR can do to completely rule out the possibility of a car coming off the ground there isn't. If that was the case then the drivers would complain that they have tied the cars down too much. There are many things you can do to race cars, but there is always going to be a risk of them lifting of the ground. The only things I can think of are going back to single file restarts like some fans have already recommended or removing enough seats to the point that every fan is above the fence. I know that is a bad idea because some fans like to be real close to the action, but I don't know what else the drivers want NASCAR to do. Absolutely. I thought NASCAR had learned from the 1993 spring Talladega race that side-by-side restarts at the end of plate races are are lunacy (and there weren't even many cars on the inside for that race), and that restarts with one or two laps to go on plate tracks are lunacy. As a result of that race, they restarted single-file in the last ten laps no matter the track until shootout style restarts were introduced. I miss that. Honestly I don't even like shootout style on the cookie cutters and short tracks, where it has also induced stupid crashes that wouldn't have happened otherwise... But I'm pretty alone on this. The reason that I don't like it is that you see drivers intentionally stopping on pit road to avoid being in an odd or even position depending on the track. At the faster tracks, its an advantage to start 8th rather than 3rd and at short tracks/tracks with low banking its better to start 7th or 9th rather than 4th. 889. Finishes under yellow. Single car qualifying on ovals. ect. It really reminds me of NASCAR back when I loved NASCAR (more so than today's NASCAR by far). They are just aren't in stock cars. :) 890. kevin20fan posted: 07.09.2015 - 12:22 pm Rate this comment: (4) (0) I also dislike double-file restarts. Not only do they cause stupid crashes, they are incredibly unfair to drivers that happen to be in the "wrong" lane. When it's better to be 4th than 2nd on a restart, you've got a problem. I would be okay with GWC only if we have single-file restarts and it becomes illegal to pit under a GWC unless you are out of gas, have a flat tire, crash damage, etc. The free pass has also outlived it's usefulness since the advent of the wave-around. Being given a lap back without taking a strategy risk (as in the wave-around) is asinine. The only thing I don't like about the wave-around is that it is regularly abused with the frequency that NASCAR throws questionable cautions. As has been said in the past, all of these things are great for entertainment but ridiculous from a competition standpoint. 891. He's more likely to replace Bayne I would guess, and considering Stenhouse was much more dominant in Nationwide than Buescher is in Xfinity, I'm not sure they'll be able to get *anyone* who will bring them back to prominence." Wrong. They have the best driver developmental program in NASCAR. By FAR. The only time that Roush has ever spent money was when they signed Jamie McMurray to a huge free agent deal in 2005. Drivers that have come out of developmental program: Greg Biffle Matt Kenseth Carl Edwards Jeff Burton Instead of spending money on free agents they focus on their developmental program. And they are excellent at it. It is known throughout the industry that Kyle Weatherman and Kyle Benjamin are the two best drivers that aren't in one of NASCAR top 3 series. They are both part of the Roush developmental program. Also, they have Chris Buescher and Darrell Wallace Jr. You say Stenhouse looked better than Buescher, but he looked better than anyone in trucks or xfinity currently except Erik Jones and Chase Elliott. And also, don't count out Ricky Stenhouse Jr yet. Lest we forget, Joey Logano. It's not like he is Casey Mears who we already KNOW what his skill set is. NASCAR is a TEAM SPORT just as much as any "stick and ball sport" (the biggest secret in NASCAR and I think in all of sports, but I'll get on this topic (rant) that drivers and crew chiefs get all the credit when there are thousands of members on a team and the driver and crew chief make up around 0.001% (that's with 2000 members) !!!!! of the team and people think they are the only members of the team). Anyways like I was saying NASCAR is a team sport so instead of comparing all of the Front Row driver stats I'll compare David Ragan in the #34 for the last 2 years and Chris Buescher in his few starts. It's the fairest comparison I can make. David Ragan 28.15 average finish (plate tracks inflate that number) Chris Buescher 24.6 average finish That's pretty impressive as those were Chris Buescher's first 5 starts of his entire cup career and Ragan has 307 starts. Now yes I know David Ragan doesn't deserve a cup ride and is another reject driver that a lot of lower teams love instead of getting new guys a chance. But still, that's impressive. 892. I mean his first two season in cup he was driving for the Stavola Brother. It also doesn't look like he drove an xfinity race for Roush until 1997. Even Kenseth I wouldn't full consider him a development driver for Roush. He was racing for Robbie Reiser for a while before Roush got involved with that team. Did they help him advance his career? Yes, but I don't know if i would say they developed him. 893. racefangurl posted: 07.09.2015 - 10:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) David Ragan was rushed up and is at this time, thought to be unable to handle the pressure of being with a big team. When he's with a smaller team, he can win plate races. With a big team, he makes mistakes, like at the end of the 2011 Daytona 500 and earlier this year, when he filled in for Kyle Busch. 894. Out of the corner of my eye I thought I had seen a car hit the fence and explode, but when I looked for the car on screen I couldn't find it. I remember seeing Denny Hamlin's car on fire and thinking "oh, that's the car that caught fire, nothing hit the fence." Then the camera panned to Austin Dillon's car, the most destroyed racecar I'd ever seen. I don't like Dillon whatsoever but when the camera panned I wanted to vomit. I was sure I had witnessed a fatal crash but amazingly he got out quickly and walked away. Thank the Lord 906.
