How about Landon Cassill qualifying 13th?? Impressive run for that team. Timmy Hill explained on Twitter that his front end was too low on his qualifying lap and it forced him to abort his run. That's why he was over 30 MPH off the pole speed. 2. Edwards is running a different "Sport Clips" paint scheme this weekend. Landon Cassill with a great qualifying run in 13th! After missing the last two Cup races due to qualifying rainouts, Ryan Blaney finally makes the field with a solid qualifying attempt of 16th. Blaney was fastest of all drivers in the first round of qualifying, and was 10th-fastest in first practice. New England native Eddie MacDonald is making only his second career Cup start, one year after making his debut in this same race. 5. someone posted: 07.17.2015 - 6:13 pm Rate this comment: (2) (1) Yay Carl's on the pole at one of his worst tracks! There have been some good races here, and indeed the cars don't handle perfectly here, but there have also been quite a few dull and uneventful races here. I basically feel the same way about this track as I do about Dover. Having said that, I wouldn't think of booting this place off the schedule or taking a race away from it. This is one track on the schedule that has no problem putting butts in the seats every time...why would you take a race away from a track that can actually consistently sell out? 27. Agree, but I can't help but get the feeling that he's destined to spend his entire Cup career in lower-budget equipment. He's definitely ran better in his equipment and yet hasn't managed to become a blip on any significant team's radar...He isn't from a wealthy family, he doesn't come with his own guaranteed sponsor, and he isn't a media darling, which makes it less likely he'll actually GET a decent ride... I know I said this a few weeks ago, but somehow should that come true, future generations of NASCAR fans who never saw him race will deem him one of the worst drivers in Cup Series history, which wouldn't be fair since he never had decent equipment. 28. mister83 posted: 07.17.2015 - 10:09 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Chives, I agree. Leo posted: 07.18.2015 - 1:23 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) The "107% rule" is a system used by many motorsport bodies worldwide, stating that a car must complete a lap within 107% of the pole time to qualify for the race. It isn't completely black and white as a driver who is outside of the 107% can be allowed to race if it can be shown that they can run within the limit (someone having mechanical trouble in qualifying but with fast laps in practice would be allowed to race, for example). It's focused on safety rather than competition, and it doesn't have to be 107% - that's the number used in F1, while others might use something higher or lower. It's like a qualifying version of NASCARs "minimum speed" rule. 35. Yeah as cool as that would be I just don't see that happening. It's just the way the sport is now. I mean who was the last person who even got a chance in great equipment after running for a crappy team. I honestly think it was Kurt and he really doesn't count since he was already a cup champion at the time that happened. I personally think Landon is always gonna be overlooked by the bigger teams. Most of these teams have younger (and probably better) kids already in the organisation. It sucks but i just don't a spot opening for him. IMO the best case scenario for him would be if Larson leaves the 42 car when his contract is up in 2017, and even if that does happen i feel it's still unlikely he ends up in that ride. Hate to be that guy, but I think it's much more likely he ends up like Todd Bodine and never gets a shot in good equipment than him becoming a H.O.F. driver like Dale Jarrett. 36. Scott B posted: 07.18.2015 - 4:55 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) I really like Cassill and hope he can work his way up to a better ride. BMan has a good point, though, the big multicar teams are mostly focused on bringing up their own young prospects from the feeder series. More teams like Furniture Row would open up some opportunities, but currently there's not many rides capable of winning a Cup race that are going to be open to him. 37. ARCA is super lax about their rules especially on short tracks, supposedly they want car counts as high as possible (even if it's only 25 cars), so they let some really terrible cars in (Such as the Wayne Peterson's backup cars, And Richard Hauk's SuperSpeedway Shorttrack car). That's why Roger Carter and Wayne Peterson still have three cars in every race. 39. Jeff Gordon was backing out of his garage stall and was hit by Clint Bowyer which destroyed Jeff's right rear. It appeared Clint was looking in his mirror at the time because he though he might have hit a fan that walked out in front of him and didn't see Jeff backing out of his stall. At the same time a crew member who was helping Jeff back out never looked to see if any cars were coming and cleared Jeff to leave his stall right as Bowyer was coming by leading to the incident. 40. racefangurl posted: 07.18.2015 - 5:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Scott B, I like Landon Cassill, too. But the forecast does say there is a chance it might be that warm. Anyone who sets up a racecar knows that weather can be your best friend or your worst enemy. You can have a bad-azz setup but if you get some crazy weather that you didn't expect then there's a good chance your screwed. Weather temperature, wind strength and wind direction, and humidity can be your best or worst friend. And it DEFINITELY changes who has a good setup and who doesn't. 46. The only logical thing I can think of is that a car has to be at pit road speed(i.e. limit + 5 mph)at entrance rather than having a section to get under the limit, so teams may want to pit further down to avoid a potential penalty. By this point though, a team that qualifies in the top 6-8 other than pole should take that stall just to get in their head; especially in the Chase. His Cup career is enough. Every driver with 30+ Cup wins will be inducted. Period. Winning the Daytona 500 does not matter as much as winning at Bristol, Richmond, or the road courses (drivers like Bayne/Cope/M. Waltrip do not win at those places), and he's won the only marquee race that matters as far as driving talent is concerned (Southern 500). Yes, his Cup career is EASILY enough to get him in. The blemish is his poor championship record, which can't really be compared to drivers like Junior Johnson, Fireball Roberts, and Fred Lorenzen who weren't competing for titles, but probably about 2 or 3 years from now he'll pass Mark Martin to become the winningest driver from the era when the championship was the big prize without a championship... And if you think Martin belongs in... And do we KNOW Kyle won't win a title? Adam Stevens was a freaking DOMINANT crew chief with both Logano and Kyle in Nationwide when they weren't doing anything close to that in Cup, and now Kyle's been dominating lately now that he's finally getting a chance to compete with him in Cup. Maybe the problem with Kyle before was having weaker crew chiefs (I say him missing the 2012 chase is more Dave Rogers's fault than his, and Steve Addington kinda underachieved with Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart and Bobby Labonte as well). 566. I'm sure NASCAR is happy someone actually cares about them, because the ratings and attendance have been showing that most people don't. And to think they actually matter enough to keep someone with 32 wins, and possible a decade left in his career, out of the Hall of Fame is downright adorable. Let's overlook the fact he's won on every type of track, has a ton of wins at the so-called "driver's" tracks where talent is more important than setups, and has already led over 10,500 laps (good enough for 15th all time, already), nope, none of that matters because he wasn't a good points racer, and didn't win the snoozefest random lottery that is the Daytona 500. Because if there's one thing every fan clamors to see more of in the sport, it's that the drivers are good point racers. Why go for a win when you can play it safe and "have a good points day"? So what number does he need to get to pass your arbitrary qualifications for the Hall? When Busch is at 40 wins (almost a certainty), or 50 wins (very reachable, given his age), are you still going to sit there and say "Nuh uh, he done never won him a five-hundurd, or a brickyard, or a champyunchip, he aint gunna be in the Hall cuz of that." (dumb accent added for emphasis, I'm assuming what you sound like based on the idiotic nature of your post). And of course I guess you're assuming he doesn't win one of those races by the end of his career either. A guy establishes himself as one of the top 20 or 25 drivers in the sports history by his 30 birthday, and you think its his other series wins that will get him in to the Hall of Fame. Amazing. I mean, I knew NASCAR fans hated Busch, and they don't have the highest IQs you'll ever see, but wow. The denial is staggering. 568. The biggest example of this is Jason Keller's 2002 season Busch series season, Kyle Busch's 2008 cup season, and Stewart's 2012 cup season. 569. Now he is in striking distance. I just wasn't sure how Adam Stevens was going to do as a crew chief, I recall reading Athlon where an opposing observer said that with Kyle Busch as your driver, he'll make any crew chief look good, but is it the other way around? Kyle Busch and Stevens have good chemistry going, and it certainly doesn't hurt that Kyle has something to race for and he's got a new addition to the family. Eric posted: 07.19.2015 - 8:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) @563, you are off your rocker. Kyle Busch is an automatic for the NASCAR hall of fame. All drivers with over 30 career cup wins are in the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The only drivers that got 30 career cup wins faster at a younger age is Herb Thomas, Richard Petty and Jeff Gordon. I did a driver track to aerodynamic track ratio on Kyle Busch a couple years ago. The percentage of wins of wins Kyle Busch had on driver tracks at the time was one that you expected from the Dale Earnhardt Sr. era of drivers. You talk about Big Events, but NASCAR already has a number of cup drivers in the NASCAR Hall of fame that didn't win any or very little in terms of big events like Rusty Wallace, Terry Labonte, Bobby Isaac as example. Kyle Busch is going to win a cup championship at some point due to the fact Jimmie Johnson is going to be 40 years old in September, Matt Kenseth is 43 years old, Kevin's going to be 40 in December, Dale Jr. is going to be 41 in October. The age of those drivers are important because Bobby Allison is the oldest driver ever to win a cup championship when he was almost 46 years old and Cup drivers usually don't win a lot in a season the year they turn 46 years old although there has been exceptions to the rule. 574. Poster 563 is looking at majors like CJS3872 did. The problem with that thinking is they look at pressure instead of the true skill set of the driver because a majority of drivers are not strong at every type of a track or at all race tracks. Rusty Wallace didn't win Daytona 500 because he was not a great driver if anyone looks at Rusty's Daytona and Talladega record being poor. Drivers like Rusty Wallace was at their best on driver tracks and that is Kyle's problem for majors. The Daytona 500 depends a lot on aerodynamics, and luck due to Daytona being a restrictor plate track. Daytona and Talladega requires a skill set that can't be used at other tracks and that causes unlikely winners as a result. The problem with the Brickyard 400 is the fact Indy hasn't been an Mechanical grip track since 1994 for NASCAR. The reason Rudd and Paul Menard won the race was on strategy. Aerodynamics matter of fact caused Dale Earnhardt Sr. to win the 1995 Brickyard 400 thanks to Rusty couldn't pass Dale due to Aero push. The problem with the Coca Cola 600 is the same issue with rest of the 1.5 mile tracks. Those tracks don't depend a lot on the driver anymore due to mechanical drip isn't needed for those tracks and the 600 isn't as much of a test on engine reliable as it even was in the mid 90's even. 577. 88&4Fan posted: 07.19.2015 - 8:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) @567- That was pretty unnecessary. There's always battles for spots around the track, but the T.V. cameras would rather just show the leader check out on the field by 2 or 3 seconds. It's not the best track but it's something different. Now if only the people in the towns around the track would smarten up and let them install lights so they could run this race at night. The heat for sure hurts the size of the crowd for the July race and it wouldn't shock me if they loose that race at some point if they have to keep running it during the day. 602. If Kyle Busch wins the championship this year - and it's not beyond the realm of possibility right now - it'd be horrible for NASCAR. Under the system used until 2004, Kevin Harvick would already have this thing in the bag with nearly a two-race lead. I still don't understand, even if Busch wins 15 races this season, how a driver can miss nearly ONE THIRD of the regular season and still be called a champion. Injuries happen. It sucks it happened to Busch, especially in a MEANINGLESS Xfinity Series race. But that's the risk involved with racing. NASCAR has painted themselves into a corner here. They have ZERO choice but to give the same waiver to every driver in the future that injures themselves during a race. Frankly, I think it's a joke. I'm a Junior fan and I would say the same should be be in this boat. There's no way a driver who wasn't even in attendance for nearly half of the regular season should have a chance to win it all. I really think it depends on the track. I've always felt the Bristol night race has been better than the day race, well at least up until they redid the track. Now both races are nowhere what they use to be. Daytona is another one I think is better under the lights. Since going to the Gen 6 car I've though the races that were ran at night were better than the one run during the day. Some tracks tho are much better during the day. Richmond is first one that pops into my mind. IMO since since going to the COT in 2007 the three best races there were the 07 spring race the 08 fall race this years spring race which were all run during the day. Anyways, having gone to New Hampshire for years and having first hand seen a huge drop in attendance in the Summer race while the fall race has been pretty steady, I think making the Summer race a night race is worth a try. If the attendance doesn't improve they will at some point loose a date and while I go to the track that is not the main reason why I want it to keep two Cup race. The main reason is I know damn well if they loose a date it's gonna end up going to Las Vegas and the last thing the sport needs is another 1.5 mile cookie cutter oval on the schedule, especially one that already has a race on the schedule. 609. racefangurl posted: 07.20.2015 - 11:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The track has less grip in the day. The problem is Las Vegas is going get that date either from New Hampshire or from Dover. I mentioned Dover because Dover's capacity is going to be 85,000 in 2016 after having a peak of 135,000. Dover's capacity this year is 95,000 after having 113,000 in seating last year. 611. I honestly think you can add Atlanta to the tracks you listed off. I also feel despite having the best racing and the most history of the three tracks, Atlanta is most likely to loose its only remaining date I feel as of now Dover is safe, unless the current owners sell the track to SMI. The way NASCAR does the schedule (at least for the Cup Series) they won't just take away a date. They do let the owners of the track move around how many time they race at their tracks, but I'm pretty sure those changes have to be approved by NASCAR. Anyways, there are people that already accuse ISC and SMI of having a monopoly on the sport. If they take away a date from Dover an independently owned track and give it to Las Vegas a SMI track it might cause a huge legal mess even tho the move makes sense. New Hampshire is well, very complicated. One of the most common things is the track wanting to put up lights. If you live in New Hampshire you already know this but, since SMI acquired the track they have been trying to convince the surrounding towns to allow them to put in lights. Problem is the tracks previous owner Bob Bahre made an agreement with the surrounding towns years ago there would be no night racing at the track. This agreement remained intact when he sold the track to SMI. SMI has been trying for years now but, so far they have not been able to reverse this. The other thing has to with expanded gambling in the state. If or when New Hampshire is ready to break ground on a casino it sounds like Bruton Smith will make a push to have said casino built at the track. I feel if either the track gets lights or they build a casino at the track Bruton is gonna have to pay for some of it and if hes gonna put money into improving the track why would he take a date from it. That's not a good investment and we know Bruton isn't about wasting his money. To sum it all up If New Hampshire makes improvements it won't loose a date, at least not any time soon. Atlanta on the other hand seems to have the biggest problems. Right now their attendance problem is really REALLY bad. At best it's on par with Dover's and that's being really nice. Maybe it's because the dates they have had recently have been really bad. Labor Day is a terrible time to have a race in Georgia with College Football just starting up and if this year was any indication, Georgia weather can be pretty crappy at the end of February/the beginning of March. Either way people aren't showing up. On top of that, as great as the old surface is at Atlanta it's gonna need a repave soon. Just a few years ago there was talk Atlanta was more than likely gonna need a repave in the next five years or so. That time is quickly coming and I don't Bruton is gonna spend his money to repave the track if the fans aren't coming. Sadly I feel NASCAR and SMI are setting up Atlanta to fail in order to justify moving it's race to Las Vegas. 612. Sean posted: 07.21.2015 - 1:00 am Rate this comment: (1) (1) Rigged? Had there been no caution at all I think Kyle Busch already had the race won at that point because he pitted so many laps before Harvick and Keselowski pitted and was gaining a second a lap. Since he unlapped himself before they pitted, he would have been leading with no caution. Because Kevin and Brad waited so long to pit, they had already lost the race unless they trapped Kyle a lap down. What people are whining about and calling 'rigged' is merely that the caution wasn't thrown so Kyle would have bad luck. It would have been much worse luck for Kyle, who was in the top five all race, to get trapped a lap down when he was already in a leading position pit strategy-wise, than it was for Harvick and Keselowski to get stuck behind Kyle, as they would have been otherwise with no cautions. I have noticed that NASCAR does seem to be less likely to be willing to throw cautions in the middle of a green-flag pit sequence probably because they don't want to unfairly trap certain drivers a lap down, and maybe that's all this was. I agree that a caution should be thrown when the conditions merit it, but I also think the right moment to throw a caution isn't always an obvious call, and probably never has been in NASCAR history (in past decades, particularly the '90s, they threw many fewer than most other decades, and maybe that oil on the track wouldn't have even been a caution until somebody crashed in it). I don't think Kyle lucked into this or it was fixed. Perhaps NASCAR was waiting for Kyle to unlap himself but maybe it was because they didn't want to hurt anyone's day (like when they avoid throwing cautions during green-flag pit sequences). I'm not saying they should be doing this necessarily since it manipulates the race but they're manipulating the race in so many other ways at this point I guess it doesn't really bother me. Besides, his inside-outside swerve without making any contact was fricking AWESOME! Reminiscent of Dale Earnhardt squeezing between Mark Martin and Kyle Petty at Bristol I say, and that one made the highlight reels for years to come. Now highlight reels aren't even a thing that exists (as tacky as I found 'Thrills and Spills' to be at the time...) Once he made that move, I truly felt he DESERVED the win for that. Besides, if all drivers had pitted under green, he'd have won anyway. How was this fixed (any more than any other NASCAR race is fixed these days)? 613. Sean posted: 07.21.2015 - 1:03 am Rate this comment: (1) (1) Also, had the pit cycle been completed with no cautions whatsoever, Kyle would have had a several second lead when it ended, as opposed to having Brad right alongside him on double-file restarts, so it may have been an even more difficult win than it would have been otherwise since the advantage he would have had was nullified. Admittedly, Brad took 2 tires in the pits which pretty much cinched it for Kyle, but still, I think Kyle had already cinched it... Weird how much hate this is getting. If you want to accuse a NASCAR race of being fixed, I can think of many better arguments than this... 614. That being said it still seemed very weird that the yellow flew right after Kyle made that pass. Even if they did do it to help him it wouldn't be the worst race manipulating yellow I've seen NASCAR throw. That goes to the 20012 Chase race at Dega. Dale Jr and Kyle got put a lap down do to speeding in the pits and were still a lap down with about 40 to. I remember they were both racing for the Lucky Dog spot and a friend i was watching it with said they were gonna throw the yellow when Dale got the spot. I turned to him and said " No, Dale's had a fast car all day they're gonna wait till he gets by the leader an unlaps himself which would give Kyle the Lucky Dog putting them both back on the lead lap." Sure enough ESPN goes to take a break and Dale gets by the leader putting Kyle in position to get the Free Pass and BOOM yellow flag. You realize that, right?" I just don't expect integrity from any American racing series at this point. You've been praising IndyCar for having integrity relative to NASCAR when I see them both having many of the same issues. Double points races, double-headers (at the worst street courses), qualifying points for the Indy 500, push-to-pass buttons, fake red flags to create a green flag finish (which, I know NASCAR did first, and is slightly preferable to green-white-checkered but still stupid), constant changes to technical specs that alienate one engine manufacturer or the other, minimal and inconsistent penalties for in-race infractions (and NASCAR lately is being stiffer and a lot more consistent when teams cheat), trying to exploit city governments by convincing them street races which are almost never profitable will make money since they can't make a profit on enough permanent venues, following every whim of the Boston Consulting Group regardless of what the teams, fans, and drivers think is necessary (I actually think avoiding the NFL was a good move, but most fans disagree with me), constantly adjusting rulings on the spur of the moment (such as whether double-file restarts or standing starts are being used), etc... Admittedly, I don't think IndyCar manipulates cautions and I also enjoy their racing more but I don't see much integrity there either. Or in NHRA (where they no longer race a quarter mile and introduce the Countdown, which inspired NASCAR's Nu-Chase) or in U.S. sports car racing (although lately IMSA's making good decisions I think, and one of their biggest stars is the coolest driver in motorsports...) When I look at what other racing series in the US are doing in general and how inconsistent they're ALL officiating, and when I look at how inconsistently NASCAR has officiated in the past (from my Greg Fielden books) I guess I see things like that as relatively minor in the grand scheme of things, and I still insist there are many, many races that have been more 'fixed' than this... I've been bothered by fake cautions before on the spot but this race didn't bother me... Again, I almost feel he deserved the win for that Earnhardt-esque swerve around Kyle and Brad alone... 620. I liked IndyCar's double points for the 500 mile oval races (they are almost double the length of their other races), but the way it was done this year I do not like. I like the double headers, but only because they can't get more tracks on the schedule for financial reasons, and they need more races. If finances were in better shape I'd be against that too. IndyCar might be sold by Hulman and Company (as soon as this off-season) and I feel as though that would be a great turning point so long as NASCAR and the FIA are not the buyers. I hope they add more integrity, because as we've both pointed out, it is lacking in the US. It's sad that we have to hit a certain level of lacking integrity before we're bothered as race fans. 621. Rewatching races from the 80's, 90's, and even the early 2000's there would be times where one, two, sometimes even three cars would be involved in a incidence and they wouldn't throw the yellow. Now we almost always see at least once a race NASCAR throwing a yellow for a car getting to high and kicking up dust or maybe just brushing the wall, and of course the ever so dangerous water bottle. Now I'm not saying NASCAR didn't throw those yellows back in the day, but I'm almost certain they threw them less frequently. I feel that when they throw a yellow for something that shouldn't warrant it, like a water bottle, they are manipulating the race. Are they are doing it benefit a certain driver? No or at least I don't think so. Actually I feel that by throwing these Yellows NASCAR thinks they're doing something the fans like because they are bunching the field back up together and making the racing closer and more exciting for the fans. The only problem with that is, I feel the majority of the fans would rather see someone win a race by 5 seconds over NASCAR throwing a yellow with 10 to go for a water bottle in order to bunch up the field and make their product more exciting. 623.
