As for Stewart, I like him a lot actually, I only call him "Fat Tony" as a joke, so I'm sorry if anyone got offended there. 14. that e-guy posted: 08.01.2015 - 9:10 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Did I really put Kyke Busch? Looking at the earlier results he's had, from the 11 Front Row races he did, he beat Gilliland once and Whitt twice. (Not counting the 3 races in a row where David wrecked) Moffitt is steady, but really slow. He needs some more time in lower series. DiBenedetto should get his ride. 16. I honestly think people don't like Bayne for the same reason people don't like Dale Jr. By that I mean they don't think the success they have had on the track warrants the popularity they have. In other terms it's just another case of idiots thinking a driver shouldn't have a lot of fans if they are struggling. 27. racefangurl posted: 08.01.2015 - 8:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) MAR, haters gonna hate. In my time on this site, I've said some stuff people thought irrational and/or stupid, so now some don't like me. "And as primarily a European racing fan, aren't you disgusted by NASCAR's ridiculously consistency-driven points systems to begin with?" It's well... different. But oddly enough NASCAR has the most consistency-driven point system and they are the one with the least actual reward to consistent drivers with this stupid playoffs. So, I have no problem with it. Although I prefer not to see it in most series. Maybe WTCC could prosper from it. V8 Supercars (yeah, not really European either) has the same kind of system and it works well too. 245. That was a gamble but they did what they did to try and get the win even though Kyle Busch is a lot of things, he isn't a gas mileage guru. Matt Kenseth just snuck up and took this one like the cagey veteran that he is. Still, Kyle Busch is 13 points out and he can easily make the Chase now if he finishes the next few races well which he should accomplish very easily now. ALSO...Juan Montoya is no hack, to be fair he came in NASCAR when NASCAR was transitioning over to the COT and he wasn't really on the best team either, Chip Ganassi was going through the loss of the 40 team and then merging with Dale Earnhardt Inc. later. But give him credit, he did win the first road course COT race and later won Watkins Glen in 2011. The deal I always had with Montoya was that his aggressive style worked well in Indycar because it's a lighter car with more horsepower and it allows more maneuverability. In NASCAR the cars are heavier and its tougher to pass and drivers don't always appreciate the bumping and rubbing and sometimes Montoya would need a break and not a lot of drivers would give him one and sometimes witness the 2007 Centurion Boats at the Glen, he would get blamed for wrecks not of his making for being aggressive and it seemed like a lot of drivers took issue with his racing them hard. Also it always seemed that he would busted for speeding or a penalty at the end of a race where he clearly had the thing sewn up and Juan put himself in those spots, while some of them were just bad luck. Juan is still very talented and the Indycars support his swashbuckling style of driving. He got another Indy 500 this year and is leading the points only if by a small margin, he's got a rear-view mirror full of Graham Rahal. But I would have to think that being in NASCAR made him a better driver in Indycar as well, he knows more about manipulating the draft because he drove many tracks conducive to that. Still, Montoya is one of the most talented drivers in the world. I don't think he's a hack by any means. 246. Mario Andretti - Outsmarted NASCAR drivers and won their biggest race. J.P. Montoya - Won NASCAR races and finished 2nd on ovals more than once. A.J. Allmendinger - Does a great job in a mediocre car, won before. Dan Gurney - Hands legendary NASCAR drivers their asses on road courses, gets top 5s on ovals. Jim Hurtubise - Severely hurt in an Indycar, still wins a NASCAR race. Johnny Mantz - A good-but-not-great Indy driver, who won the first Southern 500. Who exactly can you counter that with? Donnie Allison getting a 4th? Paul Goldsmith with an Indy 500 podium? The NASCAR guys playing second-fiddle to IndyCar stars in a Daytona 24hrs win? Face it: NASCAR guys are hopeless outside NASCAR. Andretti won his Daytona 500 driving for Holman-Moody which one of the top teams back then. that probably helped him alot especially at a track like Daytona. Gurney is another one i might not put on there as the majority of his NASCAR success came on the road course at a time where NASCAR driver didn't take them as seriously as the ovals they ran every week and like Andretti he was running for very top teams. Anyways I don't think its wrong to say open wheel drivers had the better drivers 50 years ago, but I do think that's changed now. I really think you can drop a NASCAR driver in an Indy Car and they could be contending for oval wins after about a year. Road courses I'm not so sure about but I do think there are some that could. Recently outside of Stewart none of the open wheel driver have been a real factor on the oval and on the road courses only Montoya was able to make an impact right away and since he is leading the point in Indy Car right now I think that might be telling of something. 256. Those cars take some talent to drive. I feel like JPM could have won a few more races along the way, other than the two he won while he was in NASCAR. Sam Hornish Jr. just drives for a team that simply is not very good, like he did for the third Penske team when he first came over from IRL. He also has an Indy 500 victory and an IRL title. If the 77 or 9 teams were better, we wouldn't be so quick to call him a bust, now, would we? In 2009, he even came within 15 or so laps from winning at Pocono. He had the top 10 finishes, but if he didn't wreck the car so much, he might have had a top 15-20 points finish. Dario Franchitti, I believe, could have been able to make the adjustment better if the #40 team had sponsorship and didn't shut down in 2008, and he didn't wreck at Talladega that year in a Busch race. I could see him at least finishing in the top 20 in points and POSSIBLY stealing a win at a road course. He also has four Indy Car titles and three Indy 500 victories. In my mind, I think he would have done decent, but not outstanding. Danica Patrick, on the other hand, has ONE IndyCar win (2008), one pole (Daytona 2013) and a handful of top 10s in Sprint Cup. I think that she should go back to IndyCar because she would probably run better there. She's the worst running car in the Stewart-Haas stable. But she's probably gonna stay with NASCAR because she's marketable and not as talented (or childish) as the first three drivers mentioned above. As far as other drivers: Paul Tracy failed because he didn't run for a good team in 2006, and Christian Fittipaldi was with a terrible Petty Enterprises team that DNQ'd a lot back in 2003, which may have assisted in stunting their growth as well. I just don't think are nearly as talented as the rest of the world thinks they are and if many of them made the jump to NASCAR I can't see them having much more success than Montoya had. 272. I'd even be OK with an underperforming Cup driver getting booted out of a ride to make that happen. I do think there are other F1 drivers that would be a total bust crossing over, though. I have been feeling Indycar/CART since the 1980's and NASCAR since 1993. He underachieved in NASCAR. I remembered Juan taking over Alex Zanardi's ride in Cart back in 1999 when Alex went to F1. Juan Montoya actually is a skilled driver. Juan was great in CART and won the 2000 Indy 500 before going to F1. You can have a debate that Juan's first Indy 500 win was against a a weak field, but he's a legit talent. Juan's problem in NASCAR was caused by Chip Ganassi and Montoya in the beginning by too aggressive. Chip was known to focus more more on his racing organizations outside of NASCAR. The NASCAR side wasn't what I called a strong organization. NASCAR by the time Montoya went there already was depending more on equipment than driver for a lot of tracks. Chip also didn't give Juan proper time in Stock CARS unlike Stewart and Jeff Gordon. Tony actually did 36 Busch series before going to cup compare to what Juan Montoya did. Chip did the same thing to Dario in terms of finding him to the wolves. Juan before going to NASCAR was an aggressive driver, but NASCAR made him a smarter driver. Juan won F1 races, but the top owners of the series didn't like the wrecks he was in. I recalled Robin Miller on Wind Tunnel in 2006 claimed Top F1 teams don't want Juan Montoya. 282. I'm surprised this comment got a thumbs-down because it's honestly the truth and I agree whole-heartedly with this. There are certainly talented drivers in every discipline of racing, but you CANNOT in all fairness say all the drivers of one series are superior to all the drivers of another. It's the same thing as how NASCAR tries to advertise themselves as having the 43 best drivers on the entire planet. Nobody in their right mind would say Alex Kennedy is a better driver than Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Sebastian Vettel simply because he drives in NASCAR. Just like every series has its' talents, every series will also have its' mediocre and poor quality drivers. I hate to say it...but if anyone goes so far as to say that the drivers of one series are all superior to another just because they race in that series, your fanboyism is definitely shining through. 308. Sean posted: 08.07.2015 - 1:20 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Hate to say it, but the days of the road course ringers are pretty much on life support now." Well, most of the most qualified American road racers are racing in the IMSA race at Road America simultaneously. But I'd sure as hell rather see Jordan Taylor, Dane Cameron, Joey Hand, Colin Braun, Jan Magnussen, Conor Daly, Tommy Milner, Nick Tandy, Joerg Bergmeister, or drivers like that over some of the regular-season backmarkers. Boris Said only has a ride this year because he got fired from the #31 IMSA team and replaced by Cameron, who has been winning... It feels like NASCAR is getting sports-car leftovers, rather than the really good guys lately. Well, NASCAR primarily got its road course ringers from the Trans-Am series in the '90s and now that generation of drivers is pretty old and washed up but Trans-Am stopped being a competitive force sometime in the early 2000s so there really aren't new road course ringers to plug in there, unless you look for IMSA or PWC drivers, but the teams aren't bothering to do so, even though I think they'd make the race even more entertaining. 309. Originally a two-car operation between the #62 and # 66 vehicles, the team planned to run Brendan Gaughan for the full season, with the exception of the Daytona 500, which was attempted by Brian Scott in a deal with Richard Childress Racing. However, things fell apart with Gaughan, and midway through the season, Robinson purchased the team owned by former racer and current Fox broadcaster Phil Parsons. "I bought it," Robinson told Frontstretch at Pocono, referring to Parsons' # 98 team. "Phil is a good friend. Phil will always be around. He's not in the business and not an entity." Parsons had been running Josh Wise in a Ford this year after running a Chevy in all but five events in 2014. However, Premium and Wise split in July, a mere week after Gaughan left the organization after missing eight races. "We're going to continue on for the rest of the year, next year and the year after," Robinson said. "We're not in any long-term contracts with any drivers at this point. Josh is a really good guy. He's a good, aggressive driver and I think highly of Josh. Sponsorship circumstances dictated that we had to make a change there. That was the reason for that. I certainly wouldn't rule out racing with him in the future given the opportunity sponsorship-wise." According to Robinson, Premium will continue to swap manufacturers for the remainder of the season. The driver lineup for the team is uncertain for the immediate future, but a plan is in place to keep the organization at multiple cars. At Watkins Glen, TJ Bell will make his return to the Cup Series, piloting the #62 car for the team. This will be Bell's first Cup Series start since Sept. 2012, and his second start in NASCAR competition this season.(Frontstretch)(8-7-2015) 310. racefangurl posted: 08.07.2015 - 1:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 308, Colin Braun was a Roush driver, once.
