This week really makes it look like Front Row and Roush are equally bad. I mean, don't they have the same equipment? The Biff may just be a better road race than his teammates. 11. AJ or Tony winning would make for a pretty good story, but I can't really root for them to win because that would but them in the Chase. NASCAR really needs to change this. In no other sport does winning one event in the middle of the season give you a birth in the playoffs. I really think just taking the top 16 would be the best choice. 12. Honestly, I think 16 drivers is too many. Why couldn't they just make it 12 like it used to be? You don't REALLY have sixteen championship worthy teams out there...They could eliminate three after every three races (if they're that keen on using the elimination format). I KNOW I've said this before, but I think they also ought to make the threshold to get in the Chase top-20 in points rather than top-30...really, unless you're in a situation like Kyle Busch, if you're not 20th in points come Richmond, there's a good reason for it: you aren't competitive on a consistent enough basis. Any driver that far back in points is more likely than not to just basically be a placeholder in the Chase who will get eliminated in the first round. And besides...again, unless you're in a situation like Kyle has gotten into this year, as long as you drive for a team that actually has a decent amount of money put into it, you're all but guaranteed to be top-30 in points seeing as how nearly a third of the field drives lower-budget equipment... 13. racefangurl posted: 08.08.2015 - 11:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 11, I think they should take the winners in the top-20 and if there's less than 16 winners in that range, use the non-winners in the top 16. 14. racefangurl posted: 08.08.2015 - 11:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Schroeder, our comments crossed. The thing is, how many times have there actually been 16+ winners in a season? It certainly hasn't happened very often at all...thus far, we have only 11 winners this season (we KNOW Kyle will make the top 30, it's just a matter of time...hell, he probably WILL do it this race), and though I think we may get a couple more at least, it's becoming obvious we're going to have anywhere from two to five spots open for non-winners come Chase time... 16. BMan0213 posted: 08.08.2015 - 11:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yeah I agree with reducing the Chase field back to 12. Personally if we had to have the Chase I'd just go back to top 10 in points with the 2 wildcard spots going to the drivers with the most wins between 11-20. I always felt that was the best one as it rewarded drivers who had won races, but didn't over reward them as they weren't able to turn their wins into bonus point if they were outside the top 10. To bad after what happened in 2013 NASCAR would probably never think of going back to a format like that. 17. 88&4Fan posted: 08.09.2015 - 2:51 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) My personal opinion on the chase is that the way it was in 2004-2006 was just perfect. 2007 was the beginning of the end for the chase when they added two extra spots and changed the five point intervals to ten point bonuses for wins during the regular season. Then of course they added that "wild card" rule (the Jamie McMurray rule) in 2011, and then everything completely fell apart after 2013 as we all know. I'd much rather see a legitimate championship battle than one with just the four guys who are left. There were great championship battles in 2004, 2006, 2010, and 2011, not to mention the best championship battle ever (1992) which came without the chase. Now its just a crapshoot, which is why I was cheering for Newman to win the whole thing last year just to prove to everyone how dumb this was. 18. 88&4Fan posted: 08.09.2015 - 2:52 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) So basically... its MWR's fault that we have this 2014- chase format. 19. 88&4Fan posted: 08.09.2015 - 2:52 am Rate this comment: (3) (1) I think they should just take the top ten in points after 26 races regardless of wins. Hopefully, his car can remain in one piece now. Allgaier did very well and got in the Q3, will he get his 2nd top 10? I certainly hope so, he is deserving. And DiBenedetto! GREAT run in a totally useless car. He beat many fully funded cars and his teammates are behind him by 1.5 seconds. With Front Row doing the right thing and getting Moffitt out of the car, Matt can get a good points haul for the ROTY standings. 23. It should be the top 10 drivers or anyone within 500 points no further down than 15th place. Leader gets 5000 points and every position after goes down 5 points. And when the entire purpose of sports is to entertain people, entertainment is going to win 100% of the time. I don't think anyone would disagree that the new Chase format is far more entertaining than both the original Winston Cup points system and the previous Chase format, but in the process it sacrifices legitimacy. Now, Kevin Harvick did deserve to win the championship last year, that's true, but remember how close a winless driver in Ryan Newman came to claiming the trophy. There will come a day where a completely undeserving driver will walk home with the title, and it will be unfortunate for those that actually deserved it. But at the end of the day, I don't really think it's worth bitching that much about. I mean, plenty of you watch WWE, the most obviously rigged sport in the history of sports, but I don't hear you complaining about it because you've chosen to accept for what it is: entertainment and entertainment alone. I think it's time you start taking the same approach with NASCAR, even if it hasn't quite sunk to that level yet. 34. From what I've seen wrestling fans complain more than NASCAR fans, in part because they (somewhat accurately) believe it can lead into matches having the outcomes they want. The story developments like the big twist ending at the end of this year's Wrestlemania came about because of fans complaining about how the scripts were being written. 35. People would have raced differently had there been no Chase. For example Jimmie had like a 250 point points leads in the Summer of 2004 before him and Chad tried some different thing with the engines, which resulted in three straight engine failures for him. If there's no Chase this doesn't happen and Jimmie probably walks to the title in 04, not Jeff like the points show. IMO there only two time in the Chase era where the person who got the most points during the season without a doubt would have won the title. That would be Jeff in 2007 and Harvick in 2010. They were so dominate in those years I think even if the other drivers raced differently they still wouldn't have been able to catch them in the points. 61. racefangurl posted: 08.09.2015 - 2:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I've stayed overnight in Watkins Glen (not track related, just passing through the town) and seen Natiownide/Xfinity races on TV, so I know the scenery, like seeing a lake near the track on TV. 62. Jeff Gordon lost a brake line and lost time getting it repaired. Denny Hamlin's hood came up and I have to admit it was quite comical seeing a lone crew member carrying a spare back to his pit. Joey Logano did everything to lose this race on the final lap, but won when Harvick ran out of fuel. Kyle Busch finally makes it into the top 30, he is now in the Chase, Hendrick cars were not very good today, even Jimmie Johnson was fortunate to get 10th, Earnhardt Jr. got 11th, but he could have finished higher if he didn't run out of gas. Since Daytona, they have only led I think 4 laps in 5 races? Kahne is really struggling, Gordon never looks like a Top 10 car even, Jr has led 10 laps outside of the plate races, and Johnson has gone 5 races in a row without leading a lap. Seriously, these are not good trends. Hendrick may finally be entering a period of decline. Johnson and Earnhardt aren't getting any younger, Kahne just keeps getting worse with each passing year, and the 24 is in a state of transition. And if Hendrick is getting worse... what does that mean for SHR? I know you can never count Hendrick out, but there are very concerning trends which lead me to believe we may be seeing both a short and long term decline. Hendrick is not immune after all. This makes me happy lol not gonna lie. They will still contend but they at the very least are not head and shoulders above everyone else. This is nothing but good news for the sport. 353. Walter White posted: 08.11.2015 - 1:39 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Thing is though man, at that point in time they still had the trends in their favor. Johnson was 36 entering 2012, Junior was 37, Gordon was a few years away from retirement still, and Kahne had just joined the team. Hendrick still had some years left with a great 4 team combo. However, Johnson has failed to win a title 3 out of the past 4 years. And with the standards he has set, that is not good enough. No Hendrick driver other then Johnson has finished in the Top 3 this decade. Gordon's and Jr's 2014 was an anomaly not a consistent thing. Kahne is just getting worse and worse. Gordon has looked lost all season and there is no guarantee that Chase Eliott can simply replace him. That's 2 out of 4 teams that are out to lunch. Like I said, Junior has led 10 laps outside of the plate tracks. And honestly, Johnson truly is very very subtly and gradually decline. Even if they do bounce back in this year's Chase or next season, it doesn't change the fact that they have many long term issues to fix. Johnson is 40 next month, Junior is 41 the month after, and Kahne is showing no signs of truly competing. How do they replace all that? No Gordon, no Johnson, no Junior. Chase Elliott isn't enough. Hendrick has gone on an unprecedented run the past few decades but things change. Petty, Junior Johnson , the Wood Bros, all went on great runs but look at them now. Heck look at Roush and Childress now. At the end of the day, the higher you rise, the harder you fall. I'm not expecting Hendrick to drop off that bad, but if they don't make the right changes they could very well be by the 2020's an organization living off a glorious past but staring down an uncertain future. I'm just saying, I don't think anything lasts forever. And Hendrick's dominance increasingly looks like a thing of the past to me. It's not appearant to people who can't think, but if you look between the lines, the signs are not good for Hendrick dominating at the level they have been. They have been extraordinarily lucky having both Gordon and Johnson. Guys like that don't grow on trees. Just saying. 355. BMan0213 posted: 08.11.2015 - 3:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I really wouldn't be that worried about Hendrick yet. I really think their recent performance has more to do with JGR and Penske finding the speed that they have lacked for most of the year rather than HMS declining. I feel Jimmie and Chad have been doing their typical Summer thing where they just mess around and try new stuff before the Chase. Jr while he isn't leading laps has had top 10 car in every race since winning Daytona. Break problems at Kentucky bad pit strategy at Indy and fuel at the Glen are the reasons why he hasn't had the results, not because the team is having problems. I would however be worried about Kahne. In all honesty he has looked lost on the track since he won Pocono in 2013. IMO it's been all down hill for him ever since that race. I said it before, he's damn lucky Jeff decided this was gonna be his last year. If it wasn't, Kasey would probably be out at HMS in favor of Chase after this season. 356. racefangurl posted: 08.11.2015 - 5:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (6) Hendrick is a old guy team this year, on average. Kasey Kahne is no longer that young, mid-30's. Mid-to-late 30's is when drivers typically start to decline. Chase will be a rookie next year, but he could partially compensate at some point. Unless he's some miracle rookie, it will take a bit before he can. Tony Stewart and Junior were race winners as rookies. And Trevor Bayne had a yellow stripe on his bumper when he won the Daytona 500 a few years ago, but that's on a different plane than Stewart and Jr., because they were full-time when they won as rookies and got points, unlike T-Bayne. 357. typo posted: 08.12.2015 - 1:25 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @356 I like Trevor Bayne and all, but he sucks. The team's name never changed but it ultimately shut down with its assets sold to Front Row Motorsports in 2018. 400.
