IT'S BACK!

The Southern 500 returns to Labor Day weekend for the first time since
2003. NASCAR and the track celebrated this historic occasion with a huge
throwback weekend featuring retro paint schemes on most of the cars and
historic fashions and announcers being worked into the TV broadcast.

Can't believe it's tomorrow! As I've said before, I have my tickets and
am gonna be attending this one. I've actually never seen the Southern
500 on its' original Labor Day weekend date (which is honestly kind of
sad considering I've lived in the are for about 20 years), so I'm
understandably pretty hyped up for this one. Gonna be quite a treat to
see the retro paint schemes up close and personal!

As part of the throwback weekend Goodyear switched its tire markings
back to their old white stencil lettering for this race, MOOG switched
back to an old logo for its contingency sticker on all the cars, and
NASCAR switched to posting scanned Polaroid pictures as the images from
this weekend on its Instagram account. Ned Jarrett and Ken Squier will
come out of retirement to call part of this race on NBC alongside Dale
Jarrett, replacing NBC's normal announcers.

Brad Keselowski, driving his #2 Ford with Bobby Allison's old 1983 white
and red Miller High Life championship colors this week, scores his ninth
Cup pole, his first of 2015, and his first at Darlington. He won from
the pole twice last year but he's never won the Southern 500 coming into
this race.

This Aero package seems to have made things closer from the top teams to
the bottom teams Matt Dibenedetto qualified 25th when was the last time
you seen a BK racing car that fast on a non short track.

Darlington was the first race I watched some 8 years ago and I instantly
got hooked.

Now it's here. Back to September, with the throw back schemes to boot.
It's gonna be a good race.

This is a track where bad cars can be overcome, so for a driver like
Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. to be bad here, it's probably the driver.

I've been to the Southern 500 7 times: 2002, 2009-12, 2014

That makes one Labor Day, 4 Mother's day and that one odd one on Curtis
Turner's 90th birthday last year.

It's nice to have the Labor Day race back and it's also nice to see that
Gordon's 2007 win is being recognized as his record breaking 6th
Southern 500 win and Darlington has reclaimed some of it's glory.

In 2013 Matt Kenseth claimed that his Southern 500 win was the greatest
of his career and now it's back to it's rightful place on Labor Day weekend.

I'll be there tomorrow!

Not happy that Josh Wise missed the race. The car had a beautiful retro
paint scheme honoring Ricky Craven, who had the best finish ever at
Darlington.

Sucks to see that Josh Wise missed the race with that beautiful
throwback, and that Greg Biffle will start 24th after looking really
good in the practice sessions. However, it's a 500 mile race, so he'll
have time.

On the bright side, Jeff Gordon starts 5th! I'm excited for this, it
definitely gives me hope that I anticipated heading into the weekend,
and I think this might be his race to shine, especially since it
actually looks like he's not far off from the 41, 4, and 22, three
really strong cars, in qualifying.

Assuming no one new wins, possible chase clinch scenarios tomorrow:

McMurray- Must finish -34 spots better than Almirola to officially clinch.
Newman- Must finish -20 spots better than Almirola to officially clinch.
Menard- Must finish -11 spots better than Almirola to officially clinch.
Gordon- Must finish -9 spots better than Almirola to officially clinch.
Bowyer- Must finish 8 spots better than Almirola to officially clinch.
Almirola- Must finish 35 spots better than Bowyer to earn chase spot.

Hate to be the Debbie Downer, but as the resident South Carolinian
here...I think this may end up being a Monday race. The weather forecast
for tomorrow doesn't look very good. Thunderstorms are expected to pop
up in the afternoon and more are expected to strike right around race
time...So we could be in for a Monday afternoon race...

and Wilmington heading Southwest, but they should be gone by tomorrow

What a job by DiBenedetto again! And to think that he'll lose the ROTY
crown to drivers like Jeb and Moffitt...

Stenhouse is also looking fast for like the 3rd time this year.

Also damn' owner points... having the #33 and the #98 in the field over
Wise. But at least no Kennedy or Hill in those cars.

^Call me an anti-tradionalist if you will, but I actually quite prefer
having the race at night. It can get pretty oppressively down here in
the summer...at times, too much for me!

I guess it's just a matter of comfort and convenience for me, but I'd
rather have the race over with on Sunday. Besides, I've already had to
sit in a muddy parking lot as rain washed the race away once (back in
'07)...Not exactly a fan of having to do that again!

All the Roush drivers qualified in the top-25 and only one wasn't in the
top-20. If that translated into race results, along with Biffle's
practice performance, that would tell something about the reason Roush
has been so bad. This is a driver track, so that would help prove it's
been the cars.

"Crown Jewel" races so far in 2015:

Daytona 500: Meh
All Star Race: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING
Coca Cola 600: Slightly Above Average
Brickyard 400: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING
Bristol Night Race: Slightly Above Average
Southern 500: ???


So far the crown jewel races this year have been for the most part
forgettable and boring, and seeing as there hasn't been a memorable
Darlington race in years, I wouldn't get my hopes up for this race to be
any better. Also, I personally don't consider Darlington (or Indy for
that matter) "crown jewel" events, I just included them because most
people do.

I think it's funny he considers the All-Star race one over Darlington.
Like that race was on life support until they put the lights and in all
reality if it wasn't for the $1,000,000 (which really isn't that big of
a deal anymore) I don't think anyone would care. I honestly feel drivers
today would rather win at Martinsville, the July Daytona race, hell
maybe even the fall race at Charlotte over winning the All-Star race

Unfortunately, I'll be working until 8 tomorrow, so I'm gonna miss the
prerace show, the starting lineup, and the first few moments of the race. :/

I hope I don't miss Ken Squier and Ned Jarrett in the booth.

How long are the thunderstoms supposed to stick around for? If they go
away during the night, I have a feeling we may get another late night
race like Daytona.

On aother note, I'm shocked three of the Gibbs cars nor Jeff Gordon
decided to produce throwback schemes for the race.

Here are the paint schemes that would have been cool to see:

Kyle Busch: Interstate Batteries colors
Carl Edwards: Scotts colors from 2005 rookie year
Matt Kenseth: Orange and black Home Depot from 2000
Jeff Gordon: Rainbow Paint Scheme of the 90s
TJ Bell: Red and White unsponsored to look like 90s RCA car
David Ragan: 60s tribute to Wendell Scott.
JJ Yeley: Green and white Quaker State car of the late 80s/early 90s.
(though I do like the Beds for Kids paint scheme)

The 35, 78, 62 and 38 don't have enough history to have throwback paint
schemes.

I'd say Indy is Still a crown jewel simply because of the history there,
even if it's mostly from open wheeled cars. I look at NASCAR big races
like Golf's Majors. IMO the Daytona 500, Coke 600, Indy, and the
Southern 500 are the four majors. The Bristol Night race is the
equivalent of the Players Championship which the majority of people in
the golf world consider the unofficially call 5th Major. After that I
think you get into the second tier races.

@34 The Quaker State car was #26 not #23 which Yeley drives. I don't
know why Gordon didn't do the rainbow today. It would have been perfect.
The JGR schemes from 2000 would have been perfect for Kyle and Matt. For
the 38 you could do the old M&M's car that Sadler drove. A Wendell Scott
tribute would also be nice.

Just wish Buddy Baker was there to call the race as well. :(

Also that is cool that Ken Squire and Ned Jarrett are announcing part of
the race. Even though I always thought Ned was a bit overrated as an
announcer (he was still really good, just not as good as everyone makes
him out to be IMO) that will be really cool to see. Too bad BP isn't
still around though, he was great.

IMO the crown jewel races are:

Daytona 500
All Star Race
Coke 600
Bristol Night Race

Indy is not on that list because it is more famous for IndyCars, not
NASCAR, and frankly IMS shouldn't have a NASCAR race to begin with. IRP
should take that weekend.

Darlington is not on that list because I have personally always found it
to be boring and except for the occasional thriller (e.g. Spring 2003),
it is a pretty uneventful race. I made this comment somewhere else
before, but the racing is pretty comparable to Dover, yet Dover isn't
considered one of the crown jewels.

I consider the Bristol Night Race one of the crown jewels because it is
classic Saturday Night short track racing. Yeah, the racing hasn't been
quite as good since the repave, but it is MUCH better now than it was
from 2008-2012 with the progressive banking.

As for the All Star Race and the 600... its usually pretty hit or miss.
The only great All Star Races recently that I can think of are 2009 and
2010, while there were great Coke 600s in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011,
and 2013. But they will always be crown jewel races because, well, the
All Star Race is the All Star Race, and the 600 is the longest race of
the season.

And then the Daytona 500 is self explanatory.

think Kurt and his team decided to run it this week because they're
locked into the Chase already so they want to get a head start for next

Really? I thought this year's Daytona 500 was fantastic! How can you not
get up for 20 straight laps of 3-wide racing, 10 rows deep! Those

You say you don't consider the Southern 500 a crown jewel race because
you think the racing is boring. First of all, I can't see why you think
Darlington produces boring races, but that's your opinion. I think it's
some of the very best, "pure", racing out there. Second of all, no
matter your opinion of the racing, the fact is the Southern 500 is an
event that has been around since the beginning of NASCAR, every single
driver knows the history and prestige of this track, and the
accomplishment of winning here is arguably the most rewarding of any
race. If you can get around this joint for 500 miles without wrecking
your car, hitting the wall, hitting another competitor or staying
mistake-free getting on and off pit road, and you can be the first
driver across the line doing so, you've truly accomplished something big.

For the record, I consider the Southern 500 the second biggest stock car
race to win only after the Daytona 500.

The reason Gordon isn't running a throwback car is because 3M wouldn't
allow it. They had already signed on for the Southern 500 so Jeff wad
forced to drive his retro #24 a race early at Bristol.

Ironically 3M already ran a fan-selected retro-scheme last year at
Pocono with when they sponsored Greg Biffle. Granted those schemes were
based on 3M's history not NASCAR's as seems to be the flavor of this
weekend.

Martinsville has also been around since the beginning of NASCAR (albeit
it was reconfigured) and the racing at Martinsville is 10 times better
than the racing at Darlington, but nobody hypes Martinsville as a crown
jewel race. Just my opinion.

My "home tracks" are Kentucky Speedway (just south of Cinncinati) and
Michigan International Speedway.

I live in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, so those tracks are the closest
to me.

As I already mentioned, Darlington (I live within a half hour's drive of
the track). Charlotte and Atlanta would be the next closest to where I
live (Rockingham would be as well if it were still on the schedule).

Getting ready to head off to the track in about an hour or so. I sit on
the frontstretch near the start-finish line. I checked the local radar
and it looks a bit more promising than it did yesterday, so maybe we'll
get this whole race in tonight!

I like Martinsville, It's one of my favorite races of the year. It's
simply not a crown jewel or as I like to say a major. If it was it would
have been included in the original Winston Million. The only race that
was in that that you can argue shouldn't have been was Dega as I feel
had it not had the Winston sponsorship for that race it might not have
been in it. Martinsville is a big race to win because of the history
there but if you listen to the drivers its not talked about like the
Daytona 500, Coke 600, Indy, The Southern 500, or even the Bristol Night
Race. When it comes to big races it's probably in the second tier so
it's still a big deal, just not as big as the races in the tier above

I think the closest track (hometrack) is Loudon, but it is still over
3800 miles away. Anyway, if I ever get chance to attend NASCAR race it
would be either Martinsville, Bristol or Daytona.

I live about 50 minutes from auto club speedway and 7 hours to Sonoma so
I would consider Auto Club speedway as my home track.

The track closest to where I live is Richmond, but I go to Martinsville
much more often because the racing is 100x better than Richmond and it
isn't too much further than Richmond from where I am in the DC area. Its
kind of like my "adopted home track", if you will.

As for the Darlington debate, I guess I just don't see whatever you all
think is so special, but I don't see any point in continuing this on
since we aren't going to agree. I'm hoping for a good race tonight (or
tomorrow, but hopefully tonight) and at least if it does turn out to be
a snorefest there will be the cool paint schemes to look at. Oh and have

@62 If you don't see it then you don't know a lot about the history of
the sport. Darlington is the first superspeedway NASCAR raced on. It was
the first of it's kind and helped the sport become what it is today. I
get you don't think the racing here is that good (even though the
majority of people would say you're wrong) but how the racing is isn't
what makes races majors or not. There's a lot more that goes into that
equation.

While I don't agree with 88&4Fan about Darlington being a mediocre
track, I will respect his opinion on that. It is interesting to see
someone who isn't a big fan of the track because...well, I haven't seen
many NASCAR fans who actually aren't fond of Darlington (the only one I
can remember seeing on this site offhand was a commenter on the '93
TranSouth 500 who said he was happy Darlington lost a date because he
disliked the track since it was "too old" (a picky reason to dislike a
track if I ever heard one). For the record, this person also said
Martinsville sucked because they crash too much at the track).

Well, you won't be hearing from me until after the race is over (I have
no Internet access on my phone, so I can't give any updates to you all
from the track itself). I really hope this race doesn't run WAY late
like the July Daytona race did, because I don't think it'd be too much
fun trying to get home at 3 in the morning! :D

#63 Exactly. I would consider Indy a major (and virtually every driver
would as well) even if the racing there has been pretty crummy outside
of possibly the very first NASCAR race there...Indy's a great track for
open wheel racing, but it just doesn't seem to be well suited to stock
cars. Still, what driver WOULDN'T want to win at the most famous and
historic track in the country, and, arguably, the world?

The paint job on the #46 Chevy isn't a "Days of Thunder" throwback, it's
based off Pilot truck stop's old logo, BUT the numbers on the side of
the #46 this week are inspired by the Superflo Chevy from that movie.

Ken Squier and Ned Jarret doing commentary? Nice! I'm not really that
big of a Ken fan (His voice was virtually monotone from the mid-80s
onward, though he got better in the late 90s) But still nice!
I hope we can get the race in, but the weather looks poor.

@52, my NASCAR-sanctioned home track Iowa Speedway, which is quite a
ways away from where I live. For my home track that USED to be a part of
a NASCAR series, it would be Brainerd International Raceway, which is
just a couple hours away. I've never been there before, but I've wanted to.

with honourable mentions to the Brickyard 400, the Talladega Chase race,

The 51 is actually based of off an old car A.J. Foyt drove. Also i think
someone made the 46 chance the numbers on the 46. They were like his
regular numbers yesterday, not the Days of Thunder numbers like they
were on Friday.

Michigan International Speedway is my home-track (about 45 minutes away
from it in Ohio).
Despite generally being a snoozer on TV, it is usually a great race to
watch in person (except for the last high-drag test failure).
Plus the atmosphere in the infield is phenomenal.

As for Crown-Jewel events, here is my personal opinion.

Top Tier:
-Daytona 500 (No explanation needed)
-Southern 500 (The oldest & the toughest event)
-World 600 (The longest race, NASCAR's home-track & part of the
"Memorial Day Marathon of Prestigious Races")
-Brickyard 400 (Unpopular opinion, but the rich history of IMS and the
drivers attitudes towards this race makes it a crown jewel).
-Bristol Night Race (Fans *except pre-2007 demo-derby wreck-mongers*
love it, drivers love it and it's "Saturday Night Short Track Racing" on
a grand stage)

2nd Tier:
-Talladega (the fact that there is two 500 mile races with nothing
differentiating them and no longer a Winston type sponsorship propping
up one of the events to be a big event pushes Talladega down to a
minor-major)
-Firecracker 400 (It's Daytona-Lite: Same great taste, less fulfilling)
-Martinsville (Despite the history and driver/fan love. Like Talladega
the fact there is nothing to differentiate the events from each other
keeps it from being top tier)

Could be 2nd Tier:
-Watkins Glen (The rich history and scenic views makes a case but the
fact that so many drivers treat road courses as throw-away events keeps
it down)
-Homestead (This depends on if Homestead continues to be NASCAR's season
ending race for at least 10 more seasons and if the chase continues in
its current "Winner Takes All" format)

Going to be here for likely the last time this year. Indycar already
ended and I have no interest in NASCAR beyond a few select races
(Daytona 500, Atlanta, 'Dega Spring, Coke 600, the Road Course races,
and this one).
Anyways, time for the week for NASCAR to stroke the whinny fans and
tossing them a bone, giving them back a Darlington Labor Day date,
despite the fact that Darlington had been doing fine with it's mother's
day date. If this track loses a date, it's going to be because NASCAR
can't stop f*ng with it's date.

Pessimism aside though, I insist on enjoying this race barring bullshit
calls. I binged a bunch of old Darlington race highlights in the last
week and relived the 1969 and '85 Winston Million winners Darlington
victories.

I love how NBC even joined in and used a bunch of retro graphics. As
overdone as this retro stuff is now (almost every third week we see one
of the drivers with a retro scheme, I swear), it's always interesting to
see the station, tracks, or NASCAR officials doing something like that.

I loved hearing Ken Squier back up in the booth again. I wish today's
broadcasts would start working in a few of the older approaches like
mentioning the driver's hometowns more and sprinkling in a little more
of the sport's history relevant to the current activities ("He won here
in 2009" or "He's trying to be the first to sweep the weekend here since
2007." That type of thing). That was a nice treat and the race is
shaping up to be a good one.

Dale Jr is back to running like he did in 2009 and 2010. He was in the
top 10 early on but now he can hardly stay in the top 20. I've accepted
the fact that he will NEVER win another race. That really bothers me to
say it, but he just isn't running like he did. Maybe he just don't care
anymore. He has had pretty bad cars since he won Daytona. I hope I'm
wrong but I don't think the will ever win again.

I think Chase is gonna have a loooong rookie season next year, yes he is
very talented, but there's gonna be a learning curve running against the
best drivers in the world, and not racing against the 6-8 cars which are
capable of winning Xfinity races. 2-3 years from now though, Chase will
be a very effective driver

The number of cautions in this race is ridiculous. These are supposed to
be the best drivers at what they do and all they do is wreck each other.
As I have said before, nascar should not count caution laps. If these
guys want to wreck each other, fine, just make them run the extra laps
under caution. This race is 367 laps and ALL 367 laps should be run
under green.

due to issues with the tires or hitting the walls. It seems a bit harsh

How bout Kenseth up there in the top-10? Smacked the wall early on and
went two laps down, but it's a loooong race!

So far loving this race. Great track, great aero package, great racing.
Only thing is lotta cautions, which kind of stalls the action.

win. NASCAR's unnecessary caution lead to an uneventful finish which

Idk what happened at the end there. Those last 10 laps was like the put
the regular 2015 package on the car. Brad couldn't get close to Denny
and Brad had the best car all night while Denny was around 5th-10th.

Great race, best I've seen at Darlington in a long time. But a downer of
a finish, the last few laps were nowhere near as exciting as the rest of
the race. And I don't have anything against Carl but seeing him win in
his regular paint scheme in this race is sort of like seeing a guy show
up to a costume party with no costume, and then win best costume.

Cassill is better than the equipment he is currently in, but I think the
majority of the people on here drastically overrate him... He drove in
HMS equipment at JRM and wasn't really that impressive. He's done great
in the 01 and the 40 but the shouldn't warrant a ride in the 14. I'd
like to see what he could do in a ride like the 9 car before I gave him
the keys to a big team like the 14.

Even ignoring all the unnecessary cautions which gave the #19 and #20
their laps back, NASCAR let Edwards get away with speeding on pit road
on the last stop and thereby handed Gibbs another win (the "package"
alone wasn't enough tonight), which dovetails nicely with the events
earlier in the day where F1 allowed its "Golden (haired) Boy" to get
away with cheating to win at Monza.

So an all-around disgusting day in the world of racing, unless of course
you prefer manufactured outcomes.

Good race, lots of fun. Typical NASCAR had to screw what was probably
going to be a badass finish between 2 of the best DRIVERS in the sport
both of which are way way overdue for wins by throwing a caution for a
"spin", a caution they waited to throw until after Jeb straightened it
out. No matter how great the race you just can't escape NASCAR's BS.Most
gutted I have ever been for Brad after a race.

I somewhat disagree. Main reason being Bowyer has never been in HMS
caliber equipment. RCR when he was there and even MWR in 2012 and early
2013 where never on the level that HMS and SHR have been. I don't think
he's gonna win a championship over there, but I think he's gonna win a
decent amount of races.

Finally got home from the race...and boy I am exhausted (and hyped). I
have a lot on my mind, so I might as well do this as I have in previous
years and try to put them all together...

-First of all, I am REALLY happy that the rain stayed away from the
track today. (I did feel a few drops around the halfway point, but they
quickly went away). Mother Nature was kind today!

-The retro paint schemes were awesome to see up close! Bummer some of
them got torn up pretty badly...

-We did just drive at Bristol two weeks ago, right? I swear this race
made me think of vintage Bristol what with the insane amount of
cautions. I actually anticipated this being a pretty clean race
considering it was close to Chase time (and based on the fact that the
Xfinity race yesterday was clean), but nope...quite a wreck fest. Boy,
was I wrong! I was at the race in '09 where they set the previous
record, and with the way they were crashing, I legitimately thought for
a while they might surpass the all-time Cup Series caution record set in
the farcical '05 Coke 600!

-This race also reminded me of last year's April race a bit, what with
cars that wrecked once wrecking again (Chase, Danica, Bayne, Ragan)...

-I think I speak for everyone when I say...NASCAR should ABSOLUTELY go
with this package over that garbage they tried at Michigan a few weeks
ago. The cars actually COULD pass with this package and race side by
side for a while. The racing between Brad, Kevin, and Carl was pretty
intense there right before the last caution. I was on the edge of my
seat seeing them battle it out! If NASCAR chooses the Michigan package
over THIS...I will be INCREDIBLY disappointed. I would not put it past
them, however...

-While it is neat that Edwards managed to win after getting three laps
down (I thought that was an incredibly poor move to stay out early in
the race, but then again, they're already in the Chase so I guess it's
not shocking to see teams make moves like that), it further reiterates
what I've said before. It is WAY too easy to get back on the lead lap
nowadays. As long as you've got a good car and as long as you don't have
problems WAY late in the race when there's no hope for recovery, you'll
probably get back on the lead lap quickly through the free pass or
wave-arounds. They need to do away with at least one of this one. I lean
firmly towards the free pass...

-Disappointed in Gordon's run although it wasn't as bad as it COULD have
been (still, he ran better than the finish ultimately showed, just like
Bristol last week). I'm sure he'll eke his way into the Chase (I HIGHLY
doubt we'll see a new winner at Richmond barring something amazing), but
it's REALLY hard to see him making it past the first round...Sad this is
gonna be the last time I'll get to see him race in person, but oh well.
It was a great career and I was glad I could at least witness his final
race at one of his best tracks (even if it didn't go as well as it could
have).

-And finally...I brought my video camera with me, and I got about 25
minutes of good footage of the race. Got a lot of good clips of the
restarts, some of the accidents (I did get good closeups on Stenhouse's
and Ragan's wrecked cars since they both wrecked near where I sat), the
finish, and Edwards' victory donuts. Unfortunately I didn't get a good
clip of the backflip at all...the lady who sat next to me (who was
actually quite nice) put her head right in front of my camera as I was
about to film his backflip. Kind of a bummer (I figured if Edwards won I
might as well get his backflip on video), but oh well. You can't dwell
on the small things!

All in all, I had a blast tonight. I wouldn't say this was the best
Darlington race I've ever been to (I saw Craven vs. Busch in '03 and
that was my first race I ever attended. Very tough to top that), but
it's certainly one of the most memorable!

But I will agree with everyone that the finish was kind of a bummer. I
actually hoped they'd go green to the end (I didn't THINK they would,
but I was hoping...) because I thought Harvick and Keselowski were going
to really duke it out to the checkered flag and we'd get an exciting
finish...probably not as exciting as Craven vs. Busch, but something
that would be very memorable, nonetheless. Not really sure they SHOULD
have brought the caution out for Jeb Burton sliding, but then again...we
know how tigger-happy NASCAR is when it comes to cautions! I'm OK with
Edwards winning, but it would have been nice to see them duel it out to
the checkered under green...

Still, all in all, I had a hell of a time tonight! I can't wait to see
what happens next year!

Now let's just hope Richmond is a BS-free race and we don't see any
wacky controversies like Spingate a few years back...

tonight... and considering how much media coverage he's gotten this
summer, I'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet. (You probably know who

What is everyone's fasintation with cautions? The number of them in this
race was ridiculous. Denny Hamlin said that all the wrecks were good.
Does he not remember that he missed a number of races in 2013 because of
a wreck? I wonder if he would like to go through that again or what
since he said that the wrecks were a good thing. Let's see how these
drivers like wrecking out on the road. I have done it and it is not fun.
They are safer in Nascar because the cars are built to stand a violent
wreck but if they had some of those wrecks on the road they may not make
it out. Nascar needs to stop throwing so many cautions. Like I said
before, they should not count caution laps.

@402 - that might be a little too premature. During the race you could
see Tony starting to get back to being Tony now that he basically said
"no more of the Ward's making me feel like crap, I'm fighting back" his
confidence behind the wheel is starting to come back. Whether it's one
race, the rest of this season, or carries over to next season (rumored
to be his last) we shall see. With DW he proved he cold drive at his age
still (remember DEI), but his problem was he got grifted into bad rides/
business deals one too many times.

For the first time ever, my favorite driver will be in the Chase
field... Can't wait to see what Jamie can do. He's been the best
non-winner this year and if he gets on a hot streak, he could be this
year's version of Ryan Newman (I can only hope, right?).. It's about
damn time he made one of these things..

411, I was in a place quite like where you are, in 2013. Joey made the
Chase for the first time and if not for a little penalty (the Penske
drivers were docked points that year, 25, at least in Joey's case),
would've been solidly in it, come Richmond that year. Anyone that's been

The Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend, it doesn't get any better than
this. The retro flavor in the broadcast was evident with Ken Squier and
Ned Jarrett calling the action for one more time. Ken and Ned still
looked like they still had it and it was good to see them again. This
was a good race, it seemed like guys were able to pass when they could.
The tire gave up and allowed for some good racing action even though on
worn tires drivers dropped like a rock. The retro paint schemes were
great, brought back a lot of memories. Carl Edwards drove a good race
and despite getting away with speeding on pit road, finally got his
Southern 500 after coming close when Regan Smith beat him on worn tires
in the spring three years ago. JGR had good pit stops all night, but bad
pit stops killed a lot of good runs. The Coca Cola Mean Joe Greene
commercial made an appearance in the broadcast as well. But still an all
around good event to bring the Southern 500 back on Labor Day.

After watching all post race interviews and checking twitter, I'm amazed
Denny Hamlin is not pissed off at Jeb Burton, Jeb stayed right in his
way through 3 and 4 going 10mph slower on the last lap which is the only
reason Brad got by for 2nd

This race drew the sport's highest Labor Day weekend overnight TV
numbers in eight years, with a 3.4 overnight rating (8.82 million
viewers). It was up 13 percent from last year's Atlanta race on Labor
Day weekend (3.0), which was on ESPN.

However, compared to previous Darlington races, it was the second-lowest
rated broadcast since 2000, only higher than last year's on FOX (on a
Mothers Day weekend Saturday night), which drew a 3.2). The last Labor
Day weekend Southern 500 -- in 2003 -- drew a 5.5 on NBC.

No matter what, I think this race was a huge success as far as racing is
concerned. The low-drag package made the racing, which is usually good
anyway, even better. Let's hope NASCAR is smart enough to listen to the
drivers and fans and make this the season-long 2016 package.

After the success of last night and Kentucky with both fans and drivers,
we at NASCAR have decided they are all wrong since Carl Edwards scooted
off uncontested for the win and the Indianapolis & Michigan package is
the way to go.
So for 2016 we will go with an even higher drag/downforce aerodynamics
package, a tire package so set of tires that last the whole race to save
teams from running out of sets like last night and a full-blown
restrictor plate replacing the tapered spacer to bring the cars down to
400hp.
We will also revisit the 2008 Crown Royal 400 policy of throwing a
caution every 10 laps and implement it for every race in 2016 along with
automatic 3 Green-White-Checkers Attempts to end the race.
Daytona & Talladega style packs! Game 7 moment finishes every race!
Hey I see a frenzy of fans with pitchforks & torches lining up outside

But...you're taking away tradition! Fans love to see cars go around
tracks. There doesn't need to be game 7 moments every race! We need our
title based on consistency! Tickets and prices need to be cheaper! We
need to bring safe but raceable and cool looking cars! We need to
embrace our Southern roots again and bring back North Wilkesboro,
Rockingham, and more! There doesn't need to be cautions, manipulated
races or fixed outcomes. There needs to be RACING. And that's what you
get with the low downforce package at Kentucky and Darlington. This is a
sure fire way to bring back our fans that love our sport but have been
turned off by the sanctioning body! 2016 should be a good year!

That was a really good race! Had it stayed green to the end, we would've
had a hell of a battle for the win. Tire wear dictated different
strategies, which made it all the more entertaining.

Webmaster, can you change Almirola's sponsor to STP 1972 Throwback? It's
from the '72 season in which The King won the title. Benny Parsons won
it in '73. Additionally, members of the '72 race team were at the race.

Dale Jr.'s Valvoline car should be Valvoline Throwback, and so should
Harvick's Budweiser car.

I'm glad you enjoyed it I know it's amazing how quickly mother nature
works taking back what's hers. Andy gave it a good shot unfortunately
people just weren't showing up Darlington and Charlotte are closer And
Rockingham yeah the history is there but if your track doesn't can't
sell seats What good is it just because the racing is good doesn't make
up for people not showing up. According to Wikipedia this is what
happened. As part of the acquisition of the Penske Speedways in 1999,
the Speedway was sold to International Speedway Corporation (ISC) and in
2004, one of its two Sprint Cup races (the crucial fall race, often the
penultimate date on the schedule) was transferred to ISC's California
Speedway. The change was made after sagging attendance at Rockingham
Speedway. It left the track with only one date, in late February, a
highly unpopular date for spectators due to the commonly unpredictable
weather. That date was moved up from the traditional early spring date
in 1992 when Richmond International Raceway wanted a later date than the
traditional post-Daytona date because of two postponements in the late
1980s caused by snow. Rumors persisted that the track's lone remaining
date was also in jeopardy, as several new tracks in larger, warm-weather
markets coveted the date, which was the first race following the Daytona
500, and in 2002 and 2004, Fox's first race of the season.

Despite wide speculation that the race was in its final year, it failed
to sell out, falling nearly 10,000 short of the 60,000 capacity. The
track indeed hosted its final race, the Subway 400, on February 22,
2004. In that last race, Matt Kenseth held off then rookie Kasey Kahne
on the last lap to win by only 0.010 seconds. This finish was one of the
closest in NASCAR history, and viewed by many fans as one of the best
finishes that season. It is also known for a wild crash early in the
race in which Carl Long flipped wildly down the backstretch.

In the wake of the Ferko lawsuit (in which a shareholder sued NASCAR,
alleging a failed promise to schedule a race to a competing track), and
the sagging attendance, the track's state of affairs was sharply
altered. In the settlement, ISC sold Rockingham Speedway to Speedway
Motorsports (SMI), and the track's lone remaining race was "transferred"
to Texas Motor Speedway. Some NASCAR fans saw things differently,
however, because it was Darlington Raceway's prestigious Southern 500
removed from the schedule for the second race in Texas, and the date for
The Rock was sent to Phoenix International Raceway. SMI agreed to host
no NASCAR events at the track while it was under their ownership. Upon
its exit from the NASCAR circuit, The Rock joined such facilities as
Ontario Motor Speedway, Riverside International Raceway, North
Wilkesboro Speedway, Texas World Speedway, and Music City Motorplex as
tracks removed from the circuit.

Some suggest that the lack of any other tourist attractions in the area
(the nearest major attraction is the legendary golf venue Pinehurst
Resort, where a NASCAR on Fox promotion had a sweepstakes winner winning
a trip there as part of race tickets), and the relatively small size of
the city hurt ticket sales. In addition, other tracks nearby such as
Charlotte Motor Speedway and Darlington Raceway (in the Florence-Myrtle
Beach region) had a tendency to lure away fans looking to catch a race.

The Rockingham track was often praised for good racing (though it never
reached 40 official lead changes in a race; it saw 37 official lead
changes in one race in 1981) and for having great sightlines for
spectators. However, it must also be mentioned that the facility made
limited infrastructure reinvestments over the years while being owned by
the DeWitt family, and seemed to lag behind other facilities which
continually modernized and updated their business plans, especially
after it was sold to pay off estate taxes owed by the DeWitt and Wilson
families which had owned the track.

I'm hearing a lot of praise for the racing in this Southern 500 and I'm
baffled. The low downforce package didn't make anything better. Racing
is not about cars sliding around, it is about lead changes, and the
leader once again was immune from challenge. The enormity of cautions
just made it worse.

One thing I forgot to mention that I noticed during the race...Kyle
Larson went ALL out with the Kyle Petty throwback scheme. Not only did
his car look just like Petty's from the early '90s, he even came out
during driver intros WEARING a goofy-looking wig very similar to the
hairstyle Petty had back then. I actually got a photo of him being
paraded around the track with the wig :D

This was the third time I attended Darlington for a race. This first
time was in 1988 when Lake Speed won his only Nascar race. I went to
Darlington in 2008 and watched Kyle Busch win. The other night was one
of the best races I've witnessed in a long time. It was good hard racing
up front espcially at the end when Harvick and Edwards went after each
other and they both got beside Kes only to come up short getting around him.

It was awesome seeing Harvick in a Cheverolet/Budweiser vs. Kes in a
Ford/Miller at the end of throwback weekend. I had my Earnhardt
throwback Wrangler #3 jersey and set at the top of the stands in the
Pearson Tower and got a lot of compliments throughout the day. It was
real unfortunate that Nascar called a caution on the Jeb Burton
"incident". They could have waited a few more seconds to see if he would
really affect anything and he didn't. That was a very weak caution to
throw. Tbh, they really didn't need to call some of the cautions that
they did. They really should have "swallowed their whistle" on Burton.
He got it together and didn't impact anyone. Some of these guys about to
go a lap down or several laps down need to get to the bottom. They got
in the way on the last long green flag run when the top 3 were racing
hard, most notably Mike Bliss in the 33, TJ Bell in the 98 and some
other white car you couldn't really tell the number where it hit the
wall so much. Just Allgaier did a good job of getting out of the way I
must add.

It was setting up to be a good finish between the #2 and #4 in which I
believe Kes would have held Harvick off because Harvick couldn't race
side by side with him without getting loose. He probably would have had
to have used the budweiser cap to beat him, but we'll never know. I
would have liked to have seen a throwback car win.

However, Edwards did a great job of rallying after a bad decision on
someone to stay out when his tires were 20 laps worn early in the race.
He was racing the strokers at one time and looked to be doomed (he may
have just been waiting on the waive around or something). Some of these
strokers can't go 30 laps without spinning on this new package, that or
their equipment is horrible.

Edwards did a good David Pearson impression of coming back to win a race
when it looked like he was a total afterthought. Hey just think if the
Winston Million was still around... Edwards would have a shot at it at
Talladega if they still had it (I know the Winston 500 was in the Spring
for the longest time, but they changed it during the No Bull 5 Program).

It was great race, it would have been better though if Nascar would have
swallowed the whistle at the end letting the racers race for it instead
of letting the pit crews decide.

racfangurl Martin had plenty of opportunities to overcome his "penalty"
he had after the 2nd race of that season.

Bowman was another that was in the way or causing accidents... How he
got on the lead lap is beyond me. I guess 18 cautions.

remember anyway. He was 2nd 4 times, actually, according to the Roush

In my opinion, this was hands down the best race of 2015, and dare I say
the best race of the 2010's so far? It's top five at least! The
throwback theme was awesome and much more elaborate than I could ever
dream of, the low downforce package led to great racing (when they
weren't wrecking), and of course the return to its original date was nice.

Of course, my favorite driver winning it doesn't hurt too ;)! It was by
far my favorite "unbiased" win of his (I saw him win Dover 2007 in
person, on my 11th birthday, so that will always be my favorite). To
come back from two laps down for a third of the race, and ending up
winning it is still a pretty hard accomplishment. Even with the wave
around and the lucky dog, falling two laps down still usually ends one's
chances of contending for a good finish. Sure, Carl was lucky the race
was a caution fest, but still.

I can totally understand why most of you consider this a flukey victory,
Carl was NOT going to win this race had it stayed green. Also, I can
admit that the caution was kinda stupid (but it's still better than some
BS debris caution).

With that said, I still take issue with those who consider this win a
total fluke. Obviously being a Carl fan, I was keeping an eye on Carl
throughout the race, and I can assure you that Carl Edwards had a much
faster car than you guys give him credit for. I won't get extremely
specific, since then it would look kind of like a rant (though I could).
But really, if Carl's car was so terrible, why was he able to pull away
on that final run? Eight laps is a long enough run for a superior car to
track down and pass such an awful car. Especially considering a lot of
people like to consider Carl a "choke artist".

At then end of the day, Carl's win was certainly circumstantial, but I
wouldn't go as far as to say the win was a total fluke, (unlike his
other win in 2015, that I can admit was a total fluke). Carl definitely
had a fast car, but he was mired towards the back for most of the race;
so unless you were following him as astutely as me; it may not have been
so obvious.

After Carl Edwards won this race someone with some white tape jokingly
relabelled the track name on the inside of the frontstretch at the
start/finish line to "Carlington Raceway."

sponsor column not a paint scheme one

This race was return to Labor day weekend yes but you also forget not
only most Darlington yellows ever 18 of them most also for a NASCAR big
track since 2005 coke 600 but also most cars to ever finish lead lap at
Darlington 28! Thats impressive on the latter stat.

Rick Allen, Jeff Burton and Steve Letarte were the commentators. Ken
Squier, Ned Jarrett and Dale Jarrett were the throwback commentators.
Marty Snider, Dave Burns, Mike Massaro and Kelli Stavast were the pit
road reporters.
