McLeod making his debut is going to result in disaster for the field due to his lack of experience (Same people last year who were afraid that Kyle Fowler would cause something similar in Martinsville last year, no doubt). He wasn't the slowest qualifier in the field, and while I fully anticipate him finishing way down the running order (who doesn't?), as long as he doesn't cause any trouble and keeps the car in one piece, I'd say it would be a successful Cup debut. Gonna be interesting to see Harvick trying to dig himself out of the hole from his crash at Chicago. I'm sure a lot of us are wondering whether or not he will retaliate against Jimmie Johnson... 3. 02Justin10 posted: 09.25.2015 - 6:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Updated 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Provisional Use Ranking: (Accounts for 23 qualifying sessions with 44 entries or more.) 1.) #23-BK Racing > 19 Provisionals Used 2.) #32-Go Green Racing > 14 Provisionals Used (4 DNQs) -.) #98-Now Premium Motorsports > 14 Provisionals Used (Robinson 8/Parsons 6) 4.) #34-Front Row Motorsports > 13 Provisionals Used 5.) #33-Circle Sport Racing > 11 Provisionals Used -.) #35-Front Row Motorsports > 11 Provisionals Used -.) #38-Front Row Motorsports > 11 Provisionals Used 8.) #46-HScott Motorsports > 9 Provisionals Used -.) #83-BK Racing > 9 Provisionals Used 10.) # 7-Tommy Baldwin Racing > 8 Provisionals Used --.) #26-BK Racing > 8 Provisionals Used (6 DNQs) 12.) #40-Hillman Racing > 7 Provisionals Used 13.) #62-Premium Motorsports > 5 Provisionals Used (17 DNQs) 4. They left what is now the Xfinity Series mainly because to them it made more sense to sponsor a driver like Jr. than a whole series. I don't think it would make sense for them to come back even if it was for the Cup series. 16. Very easy to vandalize pages on there. Granted, that's not something I have actually done (I have edited Wikipedia pages, but only to add actual information-I edited the pages of old Indy 500s to add DNQ lists and even made sure to cite a source for them), but still, I can at least understand why lots of people don't like Wikipedia being cited as a source! 17. While Roush is far off its peak, it is still almost 3 times as good as the other teams. Greg Biffle is also 8 and 9 spots in points ahead of Stenhouse and Bayne, respectively. Front Row might use Roush equipment, btw. I think I read that somewhere, but maybe I should check again. 24. Big Mac Fan posted: 09.26.2015 - 12:12 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) My point is that Roush, while bad as a team, is still far better than those others. Also, Front Row does not use Roush equipment, they have an alliance. That means engines, notes, but that's about it. Saying that Front Row uses Roush equipment is about the same as saying that HScott Motorsports uses Hendrick equipment. 25. Guess I read about that alliance. Last week, some commenter said "terrible equipment yes" and then the comment went on the say Roush is better than the others. Handling is a reason Roush is so bad now. Their cars are almost always tight or loose because the chassis geometry is so far off. 27. Ak47 posted: 09.26.2015 - 12:50 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Why does Travis Kvapil deserve to go home when he had a much quicker time than Timmy Hill? What has Timmy hill done to deserve that exemption, despite placing 44th out of 44.. His car is what, 45th in owners points? Teams like Curtis Key's, teams trying to break into sprint cup, are consistently being screwed by this 36-7 rule.. With car counts ranging from 44-46, it doesn't make sense to have any more than 3 provisionals. I get the idea of protecting the stars in case something were to happen in qualifying, but when the 39th fastest qualifier has to go home because 40th-44th are full-time teams, there is obviously a problem that needs fixing. Some of these teams aren't good enough to place in the top 36, but if they're one of the fastest 43, why shouldn't they be able to race? 28. Big Mac Fan posted: 09.26.2015 - 2:02 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) @26 I was that commentator. Anyway, if I had to make a tier of current teams based on equipment/cash/results here is where I would put them. Tier 1 (elite): Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing, Team Penske, Stewart Haas Racing Tier 2 (occasionally fast, but behind tier 1): Chip Ganassi Racing, Furniture Row Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing, Richard Childress Racing Tier 3 (usually mid-pack): Richard Petty Motorsports, Roush Fenway Racing, JTG Daugherty Racing, Germain Racing, HScott Motorsports, Wood Brothers Racing Tier 4 (dreadful): BK Racing, Front Row Motorsports, Circle Sport, Premium Motorsports, Tommy Baldwin Racing, GoFAS Racing While Roush equipment isn't great, to say it's on par with the tier 4 teams is pushing it. Instead of the TEB, I think it's the MTEB (Moderatly Terrible Equipment Brigade). I think the Roush drivers are more comparable to Casey Mears, AJ Almmendinger, Justin Allgaier, Sam Hornish instead. 31. I'm not saying he could have won all of those races and that various circumstances (IE: Watkins Glen) didn't come into play, but if he and the team would have stepped it up a little more and bagged like three or four of those races like they were absolutely capable of, they'd be in a totally different position here. That said, Childers has been godawful with decision making the last couple of weeks (not pitting for the fender rub last week, gambling on fuel this week when they needed every point they could get), so if you want to blame anyone for Harvick very possibly not making it out of the first round, I'd blame him. 424. But the 4 team shot themselves in the foot last week, didn't learn their lesson and then proceeded to shoot themselves in the head this week. Harvick was fast enough last week he could have pitted with little penalty (given NASCAR's obsession with debris cautions and all the lap-down car welfare systems they have in place) instead they stayed out and gave themselves a huge penalty in the form of a wreck. Then the 4 was the class of the field today but Rodney Gustafson decided to play the desperation fuel mileage game, then acted clueless to how much Kevin needed to save and left him on his own basically. If he didn't know he should have played it safe and backed him down. Sure they'd lost the battle but lived fight another day. It was a great career and I wish him all the best of luck after his final season, but Sundays are gonna be quite different by 2017 with him and Gordon no longer being on the tour... 435. racefangurl posted: 09.27.2015 - 9:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Somewhere on jayski.com says Tony Stewart will retire after 2016. 436. joey2448 posted: 09.27.2015 - 10:18 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) "Gordon scores a top 10 in his record 789th consecutive start. I mean, I know he's been running poor (by his standards) this year, but nothing to suggest that he couldn't finish ahead of guys like Menard, McMurray, Bowyer or someone like Kyle Busch, who's known to crap the bed in the Chase, or even Truex, who has been trending downward since mid-summer. Also, as far as Brad's restart penalty.....Wow. What a horrible call. If NASCAR's calling that a jumped restart by the 2, then I don't know what restart isn't a jump. I have no problem with Clint being almost 38 when the 2017 season starts. Clint actually first went to cup full time when he was was 26 going on 27. That puts him going to cup full time at an older age than Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, Joey Logano, Kyle Larson, Kevin Harvick, Clint is a good solid driver that reminds me a lot of a poor man's Terry Labonte. I think Clint's 2012 season was the exception to the rule for him. Clint is not that type of a driver that would win 3 or 4 wins in a season. Jeff Burton won at 2007 Spring Texas Race and Fall 2008 Charlotte race. Kevin Harvick also won horsepower tracks at RCR when Clint was there. Kevin won the 2nd 2010 Michigan race, Fontana 2011, 2011 Coca Cola 600 although the 600 was won by Dale Jr. running out fuel. Kevin Harvick after Clint left RCR also won the 2013 Coco Cola 600, and 2013 fall Kansas. My point is while RCR didn't have top notch engines like Hendrick, Jeff Burton and Kevin Harvick was able to win at horsepower tracks. The driver has to be pointed in that case. I know Kevin didn't lead a lot of laps in most of his horsepower track wins at RCR, but he knew when to pass the driver. Kevin in his 2010 to 2013 phase at RCR was a driver that usually didn't lead a lot of laps in his wins, but he knew how to win that equipment. 448. Kevin Harvick won Fontana by leading a grand total of one lap and won at Charlotte by leading two. Harvick is a much better driver than Bowyer though. The other thing thing to keep in mind is Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards was known to dominate the show in the 2010 to 2011 time frame. Keep in mind that Jr. Motorsports was behind when Cole Whitt was there and Cole out performed his teammate Danica Patrick quite a bit there. Jr. Motorsports after Brad left after the 2009 season had problems from 2010 to 2012. Jr. Motorsports had to get a rid of the Eury's Matter of fact. The other thing is Cole Whitt was much better at Jr. Motorsports than Danica Patrick was. When all know Danica is still under performing with the Equipment she has. He's got nothing left to prove to anyone as a driver, and him stepping into a full time hands-on owner role should massively help SHR grow further as an organization (and let's face it, even with their success, it does seem to still be kind of a circus over there - especially now that Haas is actually going through with this F1 team for whatever reason). So kudos to Tony for doing it now instead of waiting another three or four years and only hurting both his race team and his legacy as a driver (I don't know if "legacy" was the best word to use there, but seriously, he's been on the fast track to late 90s DW for a couple years now - prolonging this any further would have made it even worse). As for how Bowyer will do in the #14, I think it'll be sort of a middle point of what Harvick has done at SHR and what Kahne has done at Hendrick. I don't see him going out and winning a title like Harvick, but I also don't see him becoming an also-ran/wing man guy like Kahne has become over at Hendrick. He'll be a Chase lock for at least a few years, and will probably average two or three wins a year (think Greg Biffle during his hey-day at Roush - or actually, probably pretty close to what Kurt has been at SHR but slightly not as good). Of course, a lot of this depends a ton on who they get as the crew chief and they build around him with. I would DEFINITELY get rid of Chad Johnston if I was them, because he seems to be totally inept (in fact, since Bowyer will be in the #51 next year, I wonder if they'd bring Steve Addington back over to SHR with him - I could see them being a pretty good combo actually). And as for Allgaier, hopefully Brandt goes with him and he can find a ride somewhere else (the #9 would be perfect for him - I imagine he could be just as good as Almirola has been at RPM with time), because he really has shown some talent in his brief Cup career so far (even though this year hasn't been very good, but I think that's mostly because HScott went in way over their heads by adding a second car that soon. 456. This isn't a harvick situation where harvick just needed a little more speed Bowyer is basically this generation's Sterling Marlin minus the Daytona 500 at least Almirola and Cassill possess the potential to be the next wave of stars in this sport. I think Almirola is a guarantee top 10 driver with a car that has more speed he almost had back to back chase births with RPM and Cassill has single handily took a back marker and made them a legit top 25 team weekly if the parts dont break. 457. Remember when Casey Mears went from an average Ganassi team to HMS? People thought he was gonna do big things for that team. He ended up winning one race on fuel mileage. Cassill deserves a better rid, but he's done absolutely noting that makes me think he deserves the 14. Also I highly doubt Almirola would be a top 10 driver if he had a better car. He has the same amount of top 10's as Hornish this year. RPM cars aren't that bad, people that are top 10 drives in the sport would have way more than 3 top 10's in that car. Also I think you're really underselling Bowyer. Watching what Harvick has done at SHR really shows that he was the one that made RCR look good. Fact is RCR only has like 20 wins outside of Dale Sr. and Harvick. They honestly probably haven't been an elite team at the Cup level in close to 20 years. MWR meanwhile has been a mess for the last two years and Bowyer has still put up decent numbers. I think a lot of people forget that before Spingate Bowyer had been top 5 in points for pretty much all of the 2013 season. Now I don't think Bowyer is gonna win a championship at SHR, but I do feel that even at age 38 Bowyer will preform much better than what you think he will. 458. He was also about on par with Harvick from 2007-2009 with RCR before Harvick really hit his prime. In fact, the only teammate Bowyer's had who outperformed him at any point was Harvick. And Bowyer made MWR into a championship contender, which in hindsight is about one of the most impressive accomplishments in NASCAR history. So I'd say he'd be a pretty good replacement for Stewart. When NAPA left MWR and the team was dropped to two cars, both cars didn't run as well. Are you gonna say Mark Martin sucked too? He ran way better in 2012 than in 2013. Well I'm just guessing here but I feel it costs more to sponsor a car at SHR than it does at MWR. Reason I say this is because Bowyer was gonna use the 5 Hour Energy sponsorship package to stay at RCR but Childress told him the deal wasn't enough money for him to make it work. Knowing this pretty much confirms different teams have different rates and like I said before I'm willing to bet SHR has higher rates than MWR. That being said I think while 5 Hour Energy will follow Bowyer to SHR but they wont be on the car for near as many races as they are now. Bowyer really fits the Bass Pro Shops image so I expect them to stay on the car when he gets there. Rush Truck Centers and Code 3 I feel are more attached to Tony and I don't think they will stay when Bowyer gets there. Mobil 1 I have no idea. They could stay or they could move over to Dainca or Harvick as they have been on their cars in the past. In the end I don't expect 5 Hour Energy to be on the car for 24 races like they currently are over at MWR, I think they will sponsor him between 8-18 races. It really comes down to what Mobil 1 wants as I feel Bass Pro Shops will want to stay with Bowyer once he gets there. 467. racefangurl posted: 09.28.2015 - 2:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 56, I like Landon and Cole and feel they're better than their terrible equipment, but IMO, Almirola is fine where he is. These restart black flags and reviews have restarts more complicated then they should be. There is also less confusion with lapped cars. 2) There will only be a single line the lane moves the same, I find it unfair that some drivers lose several spots just because the lane moves slower than the others. 3) Plate tracks.. As someone who bought tickets to the race I'm really disappointed, and since I'll be travelling 4 hours to the track, I'm not just gonna show up Sunday and cross my fingers they race, only to be disappointed and have to drive home OR spend more money on a hotel. Really hoping NASCAR makes a decision on the race weekend by Thursday/Friday, because there's no way they're gonna be able to race in a hurricane this weekend. 491. Of course, the projected path could change, but it would be a disaster if NASCAR tries to wait until the weekend. A finale in Dover would have to start in the AM, because in November, the sunset is probably around 4:30. This is all just speculation, of course. The hurricane is supposed to diminish a little bit, but I find it hard to believe that NASCAR will hold course with the race if the projected path hasn't significantly changed by Thursday evening. 501. 23andJoe posted: 10.01.2015 - 6:13 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) It should be noted that the forecast doesn't have a "category four hurricane headed right for the track", by the time it reaches Dover's latitude it's forecast to be barely a category 2 and a bit offshore heading due north. Over half the models have it plowing into North Carolina, about 1/3 into Delmarva, and the rest out to sea. They seem to take a composite of all the models. So if half show it going to the Carolinas and the other half have it going to sea, then they track the storm as heading for NYC. The latest models for the most part(5 pm 10/1) have the hurricane going well to the North Atlantic. As far as this site is concerned, the whole east coast is gonna get a heavy amount of rain regardless of the hurricane so any attempts at running qualifying or racing in any of the series will be for naught. It was mentioned earlier that they would try to run Dover after Homestead. Perhaps they go up there after the Charlotte race and run on Columbus Day before going to Kansas. 505. racefangurl posted: 10.01.2015 - 5:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) There's a gap in the Cup schedule before Homestead. I'll admit it isn't as good as it was with the Gen4 car but it still produces some pretty good racing. The last few years have been pretty hit or miss, but I'll take that over Homestead any day where its almost guaranteed to be a snorefest and the only thing that makes it even remotely exciting is the championship battle, and just imagine if Homestead were in the middle of the season how boring it would be, it would be worse than Michigan. But yeah I guess Dover is boring because theres usually a lot of green flag racing and few cars on the lead lap... and then they throw debris cautions and you complain about that too. I guess theres just no pleasing NASCAR fans sometimes, you complain about "boring" racing but then you complain about debris cautions. Can't have it both ways. IMO the racing quality at Dover is about as good as Darlington which most NASCAR fans consider one of the marquee races. 511. Also, for what it's worth, I can think of at least three spectacular (in my opinion) races at Dover since that race: Fall 2006, Fall 2008, and Spring 2013 (and I would also consider throwing Fall 2012 in there as well). That said, yeah, comparing it to Darlington is silly. 516. Big Mac Fan posted: 10.02.2015 - 12:42 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Dover is about as good as Darlington," What the?? 517. Here are the great races at Dover the last 10-12 years: 2004 Spring (if you take out the 45 minute caution fiasco it was a great race) 2006 Fall 2007 Spring 2007 Fall 2008 Spring 2008 Fall 2013 Spring 2015 Spring Here are the great races at Darlington from that same time period: 2003 Spring 2003 Fall 2007 2011 2015 Now since Darlington only has one race if you multiply the last three races by two Darlington would have eight great races, same as Dover. Just my opinion of course, you guys are entitled to your own. 519. Big Mac Fan posted: 10.02.2015 - 1:35 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Personally I don't think Dover is that boring.
