I don't think Chad Johnston is the problem because Stewart was already beginning to decline before he got there. As much as I hate to say it, as it's sad to see Tony struggling to get top 20's but there's not much at the 14 they can change except for the driver. 10. Big Mac Fan posted: 10.08.2015 - 9:37 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) How was Matt "handed" the win? He wouldn't have won if it wasn't for Harvick's terrible gas mileage strategy. 11. Sean posted: 10.08.2015 - 9:47 pm Rate this comment: (5) (0) Harvick's team screwed up by not filling the car full. Just like Kyle Busch and Logano raced each other too hard at Pocono. Nowhere near as lucky as Hamlin and Edwards's cringe-inducing 1-2 finish at Chicagoland when they came back from nearly 2 laps down due to perfect caution timing then blew around Kurt Busch who should have won by all rights due to a freaking debris caution in the last ten laps. I tend to be more fond of seeing dominance rewarded than most fans, but if somebody chooses dominance over consistency and it backfires, I don't really consider it luck. If NASCAR manipulates a race so the dominant drivers are suddenly at a disadvantage (as in Chicagoland or Fontana) I do. 12. Matt and Kyle have been MUCH faster all year long." When are you ever going to elaborate on that claim? On Reddit this week, a user posted the average running positions to date this season, and the JGR drivers were: Kyle Busch: 9.22 (3rd overall) Carl Edwards: 11.28 (7th overall) Matt Kenseth: 11.66 (8th overall) Denny Hamlin: 12.03 (10th overall) It looks to me as though Kyle has been faster than Denny and Carl all year long, Matt not so much. Sure Denny and Carl haven't shown the dominant speed much this season, whereas Matt has, but it's not like Matt is running circles around those two. And about Carl Edwards being "lucky" all season, I don't think he would have an average running position of 11.28, but an average finish of 15.2 if he was lucky. 14. Sean posted: 10.08.2015 - 9:52 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) "Bold prediction RFR will bounce back in 2016 with 1 driver making the chase." I think that is bold. Roush is right now where Yates was in 2006 or Junior Johnson in 1993. Pretty much done. I can't say I really felt sorry for any of them because I tend to detest all the corporate owners for either cheating or driving the little guys out of the sport. Johnson was not able to survive firing Tim Brewer. Yates was not able to survive essentially becoming a Roush satellite. Roush is not able to survive without Kenseth or Edwards. I don't think even Harvick could get them into the chase next year at this point. "As much as I hate to say it, as it's sad to see Tony struggling to get top 20's but there's not much at the 14 they can change except for the driver." Yep. Unlike Bayne, which can be debated, this one's definitely mostly the driver. His age plus lack of physique plus bad 2013 crash plus nightmarish 2014 crash was about it for him. After his 2013 injury, I predicted that Stewart in 2014 would have a 'Sterling Marlin 2003' kind of season but he actually did far worse. I will be very surprised if he wins again. 15. Top-level speed to my mind and dominating races is what matters the most. I am saying Edwards has had an overrated season because he has only 5 top five finishes and 2 wins, but one of his wins was fuel mileage and the other was pit strategy, and his recent 2nd place was in that *extremely* lucky Chicagoland race. Compared to Matt and Kyle, he really hasn't taken the lead on track very much and he hasn't been in the top five as much. He's been consistent, but I rate top-level consistency higher. In other words, Kenseth is alternating more dominance with more mediocrity in terms of average running position while Edwards and Hamlin have been more consistent, but have hardly stood out even in their wins (Hamlin won a plate race and that Chicagoland farce). Average running positions are better than average finishes but still have the same kind of skew. Running 11th in every race is the same as running 1st in half of them and 21st in half of them but I'd be much more impressed by the second driver. Same as it is here. If Hamlin and Edwards had won their races due to on-track passes or domination rather than luck or pit strategy I might be less inclined. Also, any bad luck Hamlin and Edwards had before the chase is nullified by the chase and ultimately doesn't matter. Only getting the top finishes in the chase matters so Hamlin and Edwards winning and finishing 2nd instead of finishing 20th or whatever if there hadn't been all those debris cautions and he'd fallen two laps down is *hugely* lucky. They might have been close to the cut line otherwise. 17. So realistically, he could have as many as eleven top fives. "Also, any bad luck Hamlin and Edwards had before the chase is nullified by the chase and ultimately doesn't matter." You specifically said "very, very lucky which has reflected into their SEASONS", so that's why I had to bring up the bad luck part. 21. Sean posted: 10.08.2015 - 10:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Whoops. Hamlin's first win was at Martinsville, not Talladega. I was confusing that with his Talladega win last year I guess. I admit that is a bad error. Also, Hamlin did pass Kenseth on track in that one (and in a portion of the season when Gibbs wasn't dominating every week), so I will recant some of my criticism of Hamlin. I still think my criticism of Edwards this year stands, relative to Kyle and Denny. 22. racefangurl posted: 10.08.2015 - 10:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (3) 3, here's what I think. Sean posted: 10.08.2015 - 10:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "You specifically said "very, very lucky which has reflected into their SEASONS", so that's why I had to bring up the bad luck part." I guess I truly am thinking from a Chase perspective now. I hate the Chase, but bad luck basically doesn't matter in the regular season as long as you win, and when Edwards's regular season wins weren't that outstanding, that is much of my case. I certainly agree that runs are more important than finishes and I overlooked some of Edwards's good runs... Still, he's running about 8th-10th place on pace and is having the kind of luck that could make the finals. Certainly nothing CLOSE to Ryan Newman's luck last year from this perspective though. "relative to Kyle and Denny." Kyle and Matt. Okay, it is time for me to stop talking. 24. someone posted: 10.08.2015 - 10:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 23: Ok, fair enough. Carl did make a couple green flag passes for the lead in the Bristol races, but never translated to the win. And if we want to talk about Carl having good luck, I'd almost say Carl in 2014 was just as lucky as Ryan that year. Carl had the SEVENTEENTH best average running position (16.86), and nearly made the final round, getting bailed out by many debris cautions/good pit strategy throughout the chase. That, is what I'd call ridiculously good luck. 25. Big Mac Fan posted: 10.08.2015 - 10:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "but never translated to the win." That's because he cut a tire while leading, fell 2 laps down, made them up, and still finished 7th. This is why he has been unlucky this season. He's had several other runs ruined by luck. I agree though, 2014 had to be one of the luckiest seasons ever. Can't tell you how many times he fell two laps down with nothing wrong and still managed to finish top 10. 26. Sean posted: 10.08.2015 - 10:34 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) The difference of course is that the quality of the Roush equipment was already starting its decline in 2014. Edwards may have run worse that year than his championship finish or worse than he is running now, but the Gibbs cars are as fast as anything else on track while Roush was clearly already losing it last year. While I'll admit his actual stats should not have resulted in that high a points finish, it was pretty impressive he managed to do what he did at all for Roush that year so in some sense he kind of deserves it. Similar to Kulwicki, who should not have been the 1992 champion statistically but was arguably more impressive anyway considering how much weaker his team was than the Johnson and Yates teams. And I think Roush seriously may have been that weak relative to Hendrick/Penske/Stewart-Haas last season. 27. If chase races are the only ones that should be considered for analyzing luck, last week at Dover was a perfect "blast to the past" to earlier this season. At Dover he had a solid top five run going (and was easily the second fastest of the Gibbs cars) until the final pit stops where he had the same problem Kurt had, a vibration, and proceeded to wind up 15th. 29. Big Mac Fan posted: 10.08.2015 - 10:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yeah. At least it was like a Kurt Busch situation for Edwards where last year Kurt had tons of speed but almost zero luck. 30. Think about it, the #20 had been established since 1999 for Tony Stewart, while the #4 is basically the old #39 which has been established since 2009. Kurt Busch's #41 was just established last year, and Carl Edwards' #19 was also just established this year. The only difference between the #19, and the #41 is that there was much more planning going into the #19, while the #41 was more rushed. Therefore, we should have expected Carl Edwards to be slightly better this year than Kurt Busch was last year; which has been the case. 32. racefangurl posted: 10.08.2015 - 10:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) 26, I agree Roush equipment has declined. No matter who drives for them, they need to fix whatever causes the drivers to say things like tight in the center and loose off, that sort of thing all the time before they can have a ghost of chance at running anywhere close to how they were a few years ago. And I remember times this year, a Roushskateer qualified high, like Biffle this time, but it didn't hold on race day. 33. The Roush scenario is like this: driver reports handling problems, so the crew chief tries different adjustments, but the problem persists or the car goes the other way, like starts loose, so they make adjustments in the pits, but it's like they go to far and the car becomes tight and that sort of thing. And there was a time Trevor wanted his crew chief to make a certain adjustment, but Bob told him to "just... drive the car as best you can." 37. Even if we were to not count those two bad average running positions by Kenseth, I still don't think Kenseth would end up as much better than Edwards as one would believe; he'd probably rank higher than Edwards, but not much higher. People seem to forget just how slow Kenseth was in certain races earlier this season. The only races early on in the season where Kenseth was the fastest Gibbs car were Fontana, Richmond and Kansas (maybe? I didn't watch that one, the loop data gives him and Edwards the same average running position of 12th). Obviously, now that it's chase time, and Kenseth is arguably the fastest of the Gibbs cars; it's a moot point. But earlier in the season, I'd almost argue that Kenseth was the slowest of the Gibbs cars (minus the 18). 51. racefangurl posted: 10.09.2015 - 7:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) Qualifying 33rd is better than DNQ, which is how the 6 did at this race last year. 52. 88&4Fan posted: 10.09.2015 - 10:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) How much does anyone want to bet that Busch goes out looking for Kahne, intentionally wrecks him, and destroys his own chase hopes in the process? 53. racefangurl posted: 10.10.2015 - 12:01 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 52, I bet some people would be happy to see Kyle out of the title hunt, but it's hard to predict if your scenario will happen. Kevin Harvick was almost 39 last year when he won the cup championship at homestead. A lot of cup championships in the history of NASCAR that were won are from drivers that were in their 30's or 40's at the time. Kyle had that Daytona Injury, but drivers that age could win. Take a look at how good Kyle Busch was this year winning 4 cup races in a 5 race span. Kyle being a daddy has nothing to do with performance. A lot of cup championships were won by drivers who were daddy's. Dale Earnhardt Sr. won 4 championships after his youngest daughter Taylor was born. Taylor was almost 2 years old when her dad won his cup championship in November of 1990. Richard Petty won won the 1964 cup championship when his oldest son Kyle was 4 years old. Kevin Harvick's son Keelen was only 2 years old when Kevin won his cup championship last year. 56. Eric posted: 10.10.2015 - 12:40 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Never mind what I said on post 55. 57. Kyle Busch was suspended by NASCAR in 2011 for what he did to Ron Hornaday Jr. under caution in the truck series race and the fact Kyle has been called into the trailer for wrecking over drivers in the past. I am mentioning this because Kyle's own sponsor on the cup side did give Kyle a warning over being suspended for what he did to Ron Hornaday and I am sure his sponsor wouldn't put up with Kyle costing himself a cup championship if he tries to wreck another driver on purpose with him being in contention for a championship. 59. racefangurl posted: 10.10.2015 - 9:27 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) 57 is right. Logano, meanwhile, has nine straight top 10s, a span that includes three wins. These are two who absolutely deserve to race for the title, and if they don't make it because they get wrecked at Talladega, it kind of proves how much of a crapshoot the current Chase format is (personal opinion!). Then again, NASCAR has finally accomplished what they've set out to do: make themselves like most other professional sports, where a postseason makes the regular season mostly irrelevant. It doesn't matter if you win over 100 games in baseball's regular season; you could still get swept in a divisional series. In the NFL, it doesn't matter if you're the top seed in your conference and get a first round playoff bye; you could still lose that one playoff game at home and be done. What NASCAR has done with this format is give themselves the unpredictability of other stick-and-ball sports, truly making the postseason a postseason. While I don't think that's particularly right for the top level of stock car racing, I do understand why it's exciting and why they chose to implement it. And hell, not seeing Johnson win another championship makes me like it a little more. 470. The drivers don't race the same anymore, Once they are in the Chase the teams start messing around and trying new stuff in hopes they find something for the Chase. A lot of the time it doesn't work and results in bad runs. 14 points isn't a lot. Joey's lead isn't like Gordon's in 2007 or Harvick's in 2010. 14 points is pretty small. I honestly don't think he'd be leading the points right now if there was no Chase. He'd probably be close, more than likely second in points but I doubt he'd be leading. 471. Their last race was the Pepsi 400 in July. 516. racefangurl posted: 10.15.2015 - 5:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 515, I didn't say that was their last race. I said that year was the last time they covered NASCAR. btw, what channel was that 'Dega race on? I know I saw 'Dega as a kid (Die Hard 500), so maybe ABC covered it. 517. The driver in cup question isn't a cup driver, but a Truck series driver. 518. Eric posted: 10.15.2015 - 6:47 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) The driver switching teams is Johnny Sauter. Sauter is going to GMS racing in the truck series. Back in my mind I thought the "Big announcement" wasn't a cup driver before saying it was a truck series driver. The media is capable of being vague for headlines for trying to have you want the news or click a an article online. Danielle Trotta was technically right be calling Johnny Sauter a championship contender in the trucks being 51 points, but never she said what series on twitter before the show. 519. I'm guessing that Sautee takes Brandon Jones' spot. 520. nascarman posted: 10.15.2015 - 8:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 516. That race was on espn. ABC had the spring race. 521. racefangurl posted: 10.15.2015 - 9:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 518, she should've specified the series. Media! Face it, the TV reporters and for that matter, any reporters are human and humans make mistakes. 522. Of course they're gonna hype up a driver changing teams in that series. 523. Eric posted: 10.16.2015 - 12:17 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @521, She didn't make a mistake because she said Championship contender, but it doesn't mean it can't be misleading despite the truck races on Fox. What she did on Twitter was trying get more people to watch NASCAR racehub. A lot of people don't think trucks and Championship due to the popularity of the trucks compare to the cup series. The Trucks isn't that popular and the fact is it has long breaks during the season doesn't help matter. The trucks have less races than the Xfinity and the cup series do. Case in point is the Trucks have 22 races compare to 34 for Xfinity and 36 for cup. 524. I didn't know about Sauter's contract and I thought might be about Regan Smith since he's contract is up with uncertainty at Jr. Motorsports. 525. By my count Johnny Sauter has driven for 9 owners in Cup, 15 in Xfinity, and 7 in trucks. Not really big news when he switches teams. GMS shows a lot of promise for a newer organization, though, I think it is a good opportunity for him. Trotta would be among the last to know of any real insider information. 526.
