Tony Stewart and Gene Haas knew what they were doing when they decided to make the manufacturer switch to Ford. The Roush Racing Fords showed a tremendous improvement in speed in qualifying by taking the fourth and sixth starting spots with Trevor Bayne and Ricky Stenhouse Jr., respectively. Great showing of speed for those guys! Granted, it's just one qualifying session, but the results are super encouraging. Kyle Busch originally won the pole, but the 18 car failed post qualifying inspection for a rear toe being off. Kyle will now start last (39th). This would have been the third time Kyle Busch has shared the front row with his brother Kurt, along with 2009 Vegas and 2013 Texas (although Kyle started the 2009 Vegas race in the rear). 9. While NASCAR often ran less than 40 cars in races before 1997, mostly on short tracks with limited pits, this is the first time there were less than 40 entries for a race since the 1993 Goody's 500 at Martinsville in September 1993. 12. One year, one team or manufacturer does better than the rest, and the next year, others may and often do catch up. Just because Roush has struggled with speed/power for the last two years or so, doesn't mean they're going to stay down forever. I guarantee you they put in a lot of work over the offseason and maybe found some things that worked and improved their speed. On the other end of that scale, look at the Penske boys. After two or three years of great qualifying prowess and fast racecars, the 2 and 22 (as well as the 21) seem to have lost their edge. Keselowski was the highest qualifying Penske car in 18th, and Logano didn't even make it out of Q1 on Friday. Also, after a lot of concerned posters were predicting a total domination by the Toyota teams this year, after last week's strong showing by Gibbs and company in the Daytona 500, the fastest Toyota on Friday was Carl Edwards in seventh. Seems like your fears may be a bit premature. So the point of my rant is, don't go acting surprised when a team that has struggled comes out more competitive at the beginning of a season. That's how it goes. 33. Baker posted: 02.27.2016 - 8:46 am Rate this comment: (3) (1) 39 cars and people trying to tell me this sport ain't dying, 34. The 2016 Daytona 500 earned a 6.6 final rating and 11.4 million viewers on FOX, down 14% in ratings and 15% in viewership from last year (7.7, 13.4M) but up 18% and 23%, respectively, from 2014, when coverage was delayed to primetime due to rain and faced the Winter Olympics (5.6, 9.3M). Denny Hamlin's narrow win was *the second-lowest rated Daytona 500 since live start-to-finish coverage began in 1979, ahead of only 2014*. That spot was previously held by the 1990 race (7.3). It also scored the *second-smallest audience for the race since 1991* (10.9M), again ahead of only 2014. *Five of the ten lowest rated Daytona 500 telecasts have taken place in the past seven seasons*. Compared to other sports, the Daytona 500 drew a lower rating and fewer viewers than every game of last year's NBA Finals, World Series, Final Four and College Football Playoff, horse racing's Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, and the final round of The Masters.(Sports Media Watch)(2-27-2016) 35. The rest of Speedweeks was a flop too. - Viewership for the Sprint Unlimited was only 4.8 million, with a ratings share of 2.8, 15% less than last year (5.61 million) in viewership and a 14% decline in ratings (3.2). These are the lowest ratings for the event on FOX, with only the FS1 broadcast 2014 one being lower. Head to head, it lost to TNT's NBA All-Star Saturday Night, which drew a 3.2 and 5.6 million viewers. - The Can-Am Duels were also a step down from last year, drawing a 1.57 and 2.548 million viewers, a 16% decrease in viewership from last year (3.018) and a 13% decline in ratings (1.8), the lowest since it's move to primetime. It did beat out both NBA games on TNT, however. So this does not bode well for the future. As for attendance, we don't have stats any more, but the amount of seat cuts recently show the decline. Atlanta- 124,000 to 75,000 (40% of seats cut) Auto Club- 92,000 to 68,000 (26% of seats cut) Bristol- 160,000 to 153,000 (4% of seats cut) Charlotte- 146,000 to 89,000 (39% of seats cut) Chicagoland- 75,000 to 55,500 (26% of seats cut) Darlington- 68,000 to 58,000 (15% of seats cut) Daytona -168,000 to 101,000 (40% of seats cut) Dover- 135,000 to 95,500 (30% of seats cut), to make matters worse, for this year, Dover is removing 11% of seats, cutting attendance even further, to just 85,000. Homestead- 65,000 to 46,000 (29% of seats cut) Indianapolis- 257,325 to 235,000 (9% of seats cut) Kansas- 74,000 (Hasn't had any seats cut) Kentucky- 107,000 (Also hasn't had any seats cut) Las Vegas- Doesn't say how much attendance Martinsville- 55,000 (Not any seats cut recently) Michigan- 137,243 to 71,000 (FOURTY-NINE PERCENT of seats cut) New Hampshire- 88,000 (No seats cut recently) Phoenix- 76,812 to 51,000 (34% of seats cut) Pocono- 70,000 (No seats cut recently) Richmond- 112,029 to 71,000 (37% of seats cut). To make matters worse, they're removing another 16% of seats, cutting attendance to 60,000. Sonoma- Doesn't list attendance Talladega- 143,231 to 78,000 (A whopping 46% of seats cut) Texas- 159,000 to 138,122 (13% of seats cut) Watkins Glen- A mere 38,900, but hasn't had any seats cut lately So overall, apart from a lucky few, most tracks have had as much as half of their seats cut. And this is while IndyCar's popularity is increasing, as well as F1 in America. I'm willing NASCAR will be gone by 2025. 43. The top teams use 4-7 major companies to help sponsor there cars a season which is clearly robbing the smaller cup team as well as xfinity and truck teams. Its pretty simple with ratings falling and attendance falling why would companies still invest that type of money for a sport that is declining in quality. The only way to help business is to cut cost or cap out how much teams can spend because this thing is starting to become like F1 too teams never decline while backmarkers never improve. I mean have you seen the size of the pit boxes these teams use now there basically mini hotels on pit lane that sit 8-10 people with a t.v in every seat kinda unnecessary for a owner to have that. 44. Yes, it's in a state of decline, but it's still too big to just cease to exist. 39 cars in a Cup race may look bad (and I certainly don't like it), but lower car counts and viewership numbers will not be the demise of this sport. I am saying because I grew up in a state that had tracks that CART used including one oval. CART had no problems selling out before the split, but attendance went down after the split happened. Tony George creating his own series hurt open wheel racing in terms of popularity by creating the split a first place. Tony George had the Indy 500 and CART has nothing to top that despite the quality of the drivers that Tony's new racing series had in the beginning. The long the split happened the more damage it did to open wheel racing in the United States. 61. In most cases, if that person gets a new deal, the team only has to pay the difference if any between the old and new contract. 256. murb posted: 02.28.2016 - 2:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Ty = Paul Menard" I think he'll be better than Menard by a decent amount (or, at least he'll have a better career) since he'll pretty much undoubtedly be a top 15 Cup driver once the early 2000s guys all retire and the current young guns are all the top guys. So look for me to comment far less outside of night races, rain-delayed events, and the like), and I do have to say, it did some like a pretty nice throwback to about 10 years ago or so. It was nice seeing drivers come and go throughout the race like back in the old days. You'd see guys like Junior and Hamlin move up quickly and drop back, and guys like Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott slowly make their way forward. I must say, I'm quite surprised there were so few cautions (I think they went over 200 laps without a yellow flag?), but then again, I'm pretty well aware Atlanta has had quite a few races that have gone lengthy amounts of time without any incidents. Kind of surprising to see all the cars were on pace to finish the race until the very end! (I know the results may say everyone DID finish, but I'm pretty sure Almirola and Ragan never saw the checkered). It was also nice to see NASCAR let them race back to the white flag (considering the crash happened on the backstretch), although I knew the moment Junior beat Kyle back to the line for second that the conspiracy types would jump all over that. Johnson's crew definitely earned him that win today! It gets a little tiring seeing Johnson win so much, but honestly...it's starting to bother me less and less over the years... There is a video I once saw where after Jimmie lost to Tony Stewart at Martinsville he came straight down off the pit box and shoved a kid out of the way. "Continuing a rough start to the season, NASCAR's second race of the season scored its lowest overnight since FOX acquired rights. NASCAR Sprint Cup racing from Atlanta earned a 3.7 overnight rating on FOX Sunday afternoon, down 27% from last year (5.1) and the lowest overnight for the second race of the season since FOX began airing races in 2001. The previous low was a 4.8 for the 2014 Phoenix race. The second race of the season is usually the highest rated outside of Daytona, topping a 6.0 overnight in all-but-one year from 2001 to 2008 and a 5.0 in all-but-two years since. Overnights reached as high as 7.1 for the Auto Club 500 in 2005. For the weekend, NASCAR placed second among sporting events behind Saturday's Warriors/Thunder NBA game on ABC (3.9). Because NBA ratings tend to decline from the overnight to the final, while NASCAR ratings remain stable or increase, the race will likely come out ahead in the final tally." Didn't even beat the NBA! This is the third straight year Kevin has lead the most laps at Atlanta and yet to win at this track since his first career victory. 2) Jimmie Johnson wins this race, tying Dale Earnhardt Sr for the 7th most all time. 3) Atlanta is most likely Dale Earnhardt's best tracks aside from Talladega, and is Dale's 2nd winningest track (tying Darlintgon & Bristol, of course) with 9 compared to Talladega's 10. Not only that, 2000 was the last time we've seen Dale Earnhardt in victory lane and he did so twice. Talladega was the very last, but the only other time he won? Atlanta, edging out Bobby Labonte in a wild finish. Wouldn't it be something (Like Jeff did winning at Talladega to surpass Dale of all places) if Jimmie Johnson actually surpasses Dale by winning at Bristol, Talladega OR Darlington? 4) Out of nowhere, Dale Earnhardt Jr surged to edge out Kyle Busch for 2nd place finish, right behind teammate Jimmie Johnson. 5) Just to throw this in for something interesting since it IS a throwback race: This is the very first Atlanta race without Dale Earnhardt Sr AND Jeff Gordon, and whilst the #24 is still on track, Chase Elliott still scored his first top 10 (8th, after starting 24th) finish at a track where Jeff Gordon made his debut back in 1992 finale, one of the most historic race of all time. Just three positions ahead of the #3 (driven by Austin Dillon, in 11th, after starting 8th, formally Dale Earnhardt Jr's number during his DEI days). It is also currently Austin Dillon's best finish at Altanta. 674.
