Austin Dillon records his second career pole and his first since his
Daytona 500 pole in 2014. This is Dillon's first pole in any major
NASCAR series at Fontana.

That's hard to believe. Congrats to Austin Dillon to his 2nd career pole
and the start of a wonderful season!

Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. are running special paint jobs in
this race to promote the movie "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,"
coming out a few days after his race. Johnson is running with the Man of
Steel in a Superman-themed car while Dale Jr. is reunited with the Dark
Knight in a Batman-themed entry.

Interesting to note that RCR qualified 3, 5, 6 that race and was at
Atlanta in October.

Austin!!! Did not see that coming. Actually, this whole top 12 is kind
of surprising, with the exception of Harvick, Logano, and the three
Gibbs cars. And Buescher 16th! I am just LOVING this new aero package.

I can now say that Austin Dillon has finally emerged into Cup as a
contender. In 2014, he had consistency, but he didn't have speed. In
2015, he had speed, but he didn't have consistency. So far in 2016, he's
shown both and looks like he is knocking on the door for the chase and
the win. And the more impressive thing is that the rest of RCR hasn't
looked good. Newman has been a little off so far and Menard has been
completely invisible. Good qualifying efforts for both of them though.

So now we have Fontana, a track that has had some quite exciting
finishes the few years, with the low downforce package. I hope the trend
of great races continues.

Austin almost won at Michigan 2 last year and his average start in 3
races at AC is 9.3. So he does know how to get around at the 2.5 mile
tracks.

I'm honestly just now realizing this but I expected Ryan Newman to win

RCR showing some speed this weekend surprising. Good for Dilllon he's my
upset pick for this week.

And does anyone know if Landon Cassill is getting the same Roush support
as Buescher? cause it really doesn't seem like it.

22, it's a sign Roush may be turning around. Even if he ran decent and
had an issue beyond his control, like an engine issue, a cut tire or
whatever that would be a step up even. I'd prefer him staying up by the
front all 400 miles, though.

Bayne will be lucky to stay up front for 40 miles, let alone 400.

I hope I'm wrong, but after Atlanta's good qualifying effort and a

Talent wise, no way in hell. But if Larson just toils away for the rest
of his Ganassi contract (which seems like it probably will happen unless
Ganassi gets a significant boost from Chevy next year with SHR leaving),
before too much longer Austin might be having the better career.

If I had to I'd still take Larson probably ten times out of ten when
looking at both of their Cup careers up to this point side by side
(Austin looks really good this year, but before this year he's only
looked like a legitimate Cup driver for maybe half a season total -
Larson meanwhile has been rock solid since almost day one, minus his
horrendous start to this year which I don't think is his fault). I
personally think four years is a pretty good measuring stick when you're
comparing two guys out of the same rookie class though, so I'm gonna
wait at least one more year before saying which is better. Right now I'd
still have Larson though for sure.

I don't know, Austin is looking a top 10 driver so far while the rest of
RCR has been out to lunch. He also had the Truck and Nationwide
Championships.

Larson is rated so highly because of his rookie season (which was
phenomenal), but remember that Ganassi was REALLY fast that year, as
both Kyle and Jamie Mac ran up front. Larson was very consistent
throughout the year and McMurray dominated the Bristol night race before
bad strategy did him in. Take away his 2014 and I don't think people
would rate him so highly, as he's looked average in 2015 and the
beginning of 2016.

But as of now, I would chose Larson, he's looked like a much better
driver in Cup so far. But if Dillon goes on a tear this year with what
we've seen so far, then I will choose him.

Have a day off from work today, so I will actually be able to comment on
this race live for once...

Should be an interesting race; the quality of racing at Fontana seems to
have improved significantly as the pavement has continued to age.
Combined with this new aero package, this should certainly make for a
rather competitive event.

I see that I missed a wacky finish in the Xfinity race yesterday; I
could've watched some of it during my breaks at work but chose not to
because I anticipated more "epic" Kyle Busch domination. No way in hell
I could've guessed he would blow out a tire on the final lap, lose the
lead to Suarez and promptly gain it back when the #19 ran out of gas,
then attempt to side-swipe Austin Dillon coming out of turn 4. I'm not
surprised to hear that Kyle reacted immaturely to how that race played
out...Seriously, just when I think he's actually started to mature, he
goes and proves me wrong. The real test of Kyle's maturity today will be
whether or not he lets that cloud his performance in the Cup
race...something that seems to be more than a bit of a trend for him in
the past...

Speaking of Austin Dillon, he's got to be the biggest surprise of the
year so far. Contending for top 10s on a weekly basis and now having
earned a non-controversial pole? I have to echo other people's remarks
here-if he keeps this performance up he is on pace for a breakout season.

Still not anywhere near as bad as Madison Rising's...erm...performance
at the Daytona then-Nationwide series race a couple of years back. I am
still waiting to see somebody eclipse that in terms of sheer

It seems to be that most of these tire problems come as a result of the
teams running tire pressures less than that of Goodyear's
recommendations. I see an easy solution to fix this tire "issue"...

I doubt it is gonna be that bad.
At Indy they could barely go past 10 laps and NASCAR decided to throw a
caution every 10 laps to avoid issues.
They seem to have a 25-30 lap window before they have to pit today.
As long as NASCAR doesn't implement a competition caution every 10 laps
this race will be fine.

I don't know why, but that reminded me of Greg Moore's CART crash in
1999. It occurred in almost the same section of the race track.

That's not a good idea. California was built with grass back there but
it was paved over, as was the similar one at MIS, after Greg Moore's
horrific and fatal crash on the backstretch in a CART race here in 1999.
Moore's car flipped in the grass during a spin and led to the violent
impact that caused his death.

2015 Quicken Loans 500 at Phoenix. How come I'm mentioning this race? As
I've said before, this may be Dale Jr's last win in the cup series. I

Yeah when I first saw the replay I thought Danica tried to move in front
of Kahne, but on her onboard it looks like she holds her line and Kahne
turns her.

I don't it think would warrant a trip to the hauler though, Kahne said

Just a curious question: Will they actually waver Tony Stewart's chances
and allow him to make the Chase if he reaches top 30 in points with a
win(Similar to Kyle Busch's situation last year)? I really don't think
he'll win a race this year, let alone approve his run since his 2013
struggles, but it'll be hilarious if NASCAR continue to allow it. I was
okay with Kyle Busch since he was injured in a NASCAR-sanctioned race,
but Tony wasn't.

Looks like Matt Kenseth will have the "need to win a race or miss the

If Kevin Harvick wins this, the start is pretty much how it was last
year, he's won his first two races back to back with Phoenix involved,
only this time he won Phoenix first, whereas last year he won Vegas
before dominating Phoenix. Kevin's only other time he won here? He made
a last lap pass on Jimmie Johnson back in 2011 leading only ONE lap,
much like how Brad Keselowski won last year leading only ONE lap.

How about Stenhouse with a top 5? (I think he smacked the wall coming to
the checkered, but still managed to come across 5th). It's a close call
between him and Austin Dillon for the most improved driver so far...as
mentioned before, this low-downforce package seems to be working very
well for him, and he may very well end up saving his career this year.

So many reasons to hate this race. Johnson gets some free money because
he's already in the Chase. Harvick dominates like he does week in and
week out. I don't like Harvick or Johnson. Chase's pit crew all but
ruins his chance at winning. The only underdog with a chance to win
threw his race away. The only positive for this race is that the racing
was amazing. REALLY wish I was a Harvick and Johnson fan.

but you have to be insane to not consider Jimmie Johnson one of the
all-time greats at this point. We are witnessing a legend in the making,
and I guarantee that every single Johnson hater here, 20 or 25 years

As for the race, it was great! The low downforce is supreme, cars could
pass at ease, 3 and 4 wide even after restarts. Harvick dominated and
couldn't seal the deal, but Johnson passed him on the final restart.
Although he didn't dominate, he was there when it counted and that's why
he's one of the best in business.

Shout out for McMurray coming home 10th for his first top 10 of the
year, Allmendinger for 8th for his first, Brian Vickers and Scott
getting top 15's and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. getting a top 5!!!

Great race, onward to Martinsville!

I do want to go over who were the most dominate (or strongest) driver
with teams from each decade in NASCAR history, maybe some of you may
agree or disagree. While it's probably damn near impossible to only list
one driver from each decade, especially early on. As an example, I'm
also going to include years such as 2000 for both the 1990 and 2000
decades because it could go either way for some people. I'm quite
curious as to who people will list for our current decade's top driver:

It's also interesting to note that since 2010, Kevin Harvick sure have
stepped it up in his career.

And there are people who like to view the decades from 2011 to 2020
instead of 2010 to 2019, but I view it the same way as yours. Yeah it is
true, but there's no doubting Harvick's dominance despite choking all
those wins away. Other than that, I would rank Joey as the next big
threat if he maintain his strength & winning percentage for this second
half. Otherwise the young guns need to make some noise within the next
few years for me to change my mind.

@1949, I always combine that with the 1950's generally because it's just
one (two if you want to count 1948) year. Otherwise, it's hands down Red
Bryon anyway.

Quite fitting that Jimmie wins his 77th, record-breaking win at the same
track he won his first race at back in 2002. This race was fun and
action-packed! Loved how the whole track was utilized the whole race and
that the leader didn't have the apparent aerodynamic advantage like in
prior years.

What a difference from the first to the second half of the race. It
looked like it would be one of those races bogged down by tire issues
all day. It sure came to life the last 100 laps though; lots of passing,
3-4 wide racing, cars that got harder and harder to drive. In the end it
turned out to be a really fun race.

I've got to hand it to Brian France, he pulled one out of his ass with
this low downforce package.

Curious to know, but on that GWC/Overtime, where did Austin Dillon go?
He was running solidly inside the top 10, but finished 24th. I was
getting excited to see him pull off another top 10 finish, especially
when Stenhouse, Allmendinger, Blaney, and Vickers were all running
around him & were having solid runs too.

I noticed that on the final round of pit stops, he left his box but he
immeadietly stopped after he left.

Since he had the pole and most likely the front box, I'm assuming he
went straight out of his box instead of turning right onto pit road
which resulted in some sort of violation, or something else went wrong.

With this win, Hendrick Motorsports (242 Cup wins) is a mere 26 wins
behind the now-defunct Petty Enterprises (268 Cup wins). I think it's a

Big controversy on Twitter today sparked by Jenna Fryer's AP article
regarding potential penalties by NASCAR to Kyle Busch (for his radio
comments after Saturday's Xfinity race, plus not meeting post race media
obligations), Danica Patrick (for stepping out on track after the crash
with Kasey Kahne) and Cole Pearn (for his derogatory remark on Twitter
after the race about Joey Logano).

Fryer opined that if NASCAR were to fine these driver, particularly
Busch for comments he made on the team radio, it would further
discourage drivers to express their opinions and emotions, which would
hurt the sports popularity and interest level. She also questioned why
Busch was potentially facing a fine for not meeting media obligations on
Saturday, but Harvick was told he didn't have to do the same on Sunday.
Both finished second in their races, but why did Harvick only do brief
interviews at his car, but not have to go to the media center? The
standard is that top-five finishing drivers do the press conferences.

Danica and Kyle Busch also put on probation for the next 4 points-paying
Cup races.

Danica should be extra careful at Martinsville. If she has another
incident there with a driver (like she had with Gilliland last year),
she could be suspended. Not that I'd mind...

It's odd that Kyle was penalized but the Kevin was. They did they exact

Kyle got penalized because he trashed NASCAR, we all know that they act
like the 1st amendment doesn't exist when it comes to questioning
NASCAR's authority.

Harvick was excused from going to the media center after the Cup race,
according to what Gluck said on twitter, whereas Kyle wasn't. I haven't
seen anywhere why Harvick was excused.

Surprised Cole Pearn didn't get any penalties, considering he'd just
been suspended. Also (pleasantly) surprised NASCAR had the nerve to
penalize Danica and not Kahne. Really looking forward to Martinsville
next week, its always a great experience and my favorite track to go to
even though Richmond is closer to me. Will be interesting to see how the
new aero package affects the racing there. Also just so everyone knows,
Jimmie Johnson has won three of the seven cup races that I've been to
(2008 Fall Richmond, my first race, 2013 Spring Martinsville, and 2015
Spring Dover) so if he wins, you know who to blame. (Although I wouldn't
actually mind since I don't have any problem with him winning anymore,
just saying for our resident Johnson haters here).

I actually agree with pretty much everything Jenna Fryer said. That
said, Pearn's insults were quite ridiculous considering it's highly
debatable whether Logano even touched Truex in the race incident.

Would make sense. They actually build performance cars unlike Toyota.
And they have the money too throw around. I'm surprised Mercedes-Benz
doesn't join, their in V8 Supercars.

Audi also has a great motorsports background. Audi has on the WRC World
Driver Championship twice (1983 and 1984) and the Manufacturers
Championship twice (1982 and 1984). Audi has won in IMSA including
Daytona and Sebring. In touring cars they have done well DTM (old and
new), the Pirelli World Challenge. I really do not think i need too
explain their success at the 24 hours of Le Mans. They have done well in
ALMS. They have won pretty much everything in regards too road racing.
Why not give ovals a try?

WHICH is total BS, They changed the rule this year s only the winner has
to show up at media events. It's clearly a penalty for the radio chatter
(Which Kyle did something similar at Indy last year and I don't remember
him being penalized then).

Charlotte Observer, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing
development officer Steve O'Donnell talked about various issues
including the size of Sprint Cup fields and why race winnings are no
longer released:

Q: Although there are four spots available each race for non-charter
"open" teams, they haven't all been filled since Daytona and fields have
been composed of 39 of a possible 40 cars. Is that a concern?

O'Donnell: "When we looked at the charter system, we decided to leave
four spots open. We didn't necessarily think those four spots would be
occupied at each race and we'd love to maybe have them filled. But we're

was just talking about the drivers' dogs, with a quick blurb about
Hamlin winning the Daytona 500.

That's pretty much why I stopped reading/buying NASCAR Illustrated.
The magazine became focused and filled with People/Us-like fluff pieces
while actual race coverage was shoved to the back and reduced to one,
sometimes half, page per race.

I bought every issue of NASCAR/Winston Cup Illustrated from 1995 through
about 2003.. they just started giving you useless information. I guess
you can say the golden age of NA$CAR was gone and the articles they had
wasn't true racing stories anymore. Who cares about seeing the drivers
pets, & s--- in every issue

Just arrived in Martinsville for the weekend. There have been some flash
storms and expected to be some more tonight, but it'll all be gone by
tomorrow. However I expect that this will be enough of an excuse for
NASCAR to throw competition cautions in both races. Looking forward to
another great race weekend, its always a great experience coming here.

Everything fell in place for Jimmie Johnson.

To start he had a fast car, just not as fast as Harvick. Chad Knaus
planned to bring the 48 in early, so that when everyone else pitted
Jimmie would recycle to the lead. It was that same strategy that won him
Atlanta. However, caution came out after 48 pitted so that pretty much
screwed Chad Knaus strategy. He stayed out and took the lead with
somewhat older tires compared to rest of field but did do great job
battling Logano til his tires fell off and faded to 7th until rest of
the fields started to fall off too and worked up to 5th. Caution came
out for Kyle Busch with blown tire. Field pits. Jimmie Johnson came off
pit road 3rd, incredible restart gets him past the 4 and on to win 77.
Man truly is Superman, this race showed why Jimmie Johnson, Chad Knaus,
& 48 team are one of the greatest off all time: they never, ever, ever
give up

Lol what a race. Last comment said the opponents held the kryptonite.
Johnson then went on to win his 7th title. 725 beat me to it, but my man
Brian Scott finished an impressive 12th. Ok, now the race, which I just
rewatched. Was pretty indifferent, though the first 150 laps. Outside of
the wrecks, the on-track product was fine. Then...the California magic
came in, and the racing went from good to great. The restart for debris,
holy cow that was insane racing, and I was on the edge of my seat, then
the tire issues started happening, it's a bigger, wider, and longer
Atlanta. Then the caution. KB is rightfully pissed. Denny freaking
Hamlin jumps to the lead. Then the final restart, sees Jimmie go from
3rd to 1st in a half a lap, and get Superman to Victory Lane. This was
race 4/7 in my Darlington Speedweeks Marathon, and I have to say that
this may be my favorite of the 4 so far

Mike Joy, Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Gordon were the commentators. Matt
Yocum, Chris Neville and Jamie Little were the pit road reporters. Larry
McReynolds was the in-race analyst. Chris Myers and Michael Waltrip were
in the Hollywood hotel.
