Well, I'll be old enough to drive on Tuesday.

Kahne, Vickers, Menard, and Allmendinger start in the top 6, while
Johnson, Harvick and others start outside the top 15? I think the
starting lineup will make this an interesting race.

Just arrived in Martinsville for the weekend. There have been some flash
storms and expected to be some more tonight, but it'll all be gone by
tomorrow. However I expect that this will be enough of an excuse for
NASCAR to throw competition cautions in both races. Looking forward to
another great race weekend, its always a great experience coming here.

This will be the first race without the Legendary Jeff Gordon. He will
be missed racing at the front like he own the place. Meanwhile, Jimmie
Johnson starts 24th. Keeping the Jeff Gordon legacy with the #24 alive eh?

to a full 40. Reed Sorenson makes his first Cup start of 2016 to fill
the field in a plain black #55 Chevy, a second Premium Motorsports
entry. Sorenson's on the grid but he's got to start shotgun on the field.

2, I agree. And what 10 said about Fords is correct, but there's 4 Fords
in the top-15, besides Joey. Why there's even some Roushskateers in that
foursome. Guess Roush isn't a hopelessly fallen to crappy levels team

13, Roush was simply having a down time and is righting the ship. That
line was aimed at those that said Roush was irreversibly declining and
headed down the Robert Yates path. All the drivers average better this
year, so far, than they did last year. The changes Roush made have given
them speed in their cars again. They were crappy last year until the
end, but are actually decent this year.

Statman, I'm probably the biggest anti-Logano fan on here but there was
definitely a TDT/bot on this page. All of the first eight comments have

I've had my work schedule adjust (I'll just say I have a job that is
largely weather/seasonal dependent), and as such, I should be able to
comment on most-but not all-of this race.

Martinsville always makes for an entertaining show-gonna be especially
interesting with top drivers such as Johnson, Harvick, and Junior
starting way back while surprises such as Vickers, Menard, and
Allmendinger start up in the front. Could be a lot of shuffling in the
opening laps. Of course since it's Martinsville, I expect for there to
be more than 10 yellow flags...let's just hope we don't see anything
like the Kenseth/Logano incident today!

Junior spun to bring out the first caution. A long green flag run
coupled with Kyle Busch being the class of the field helped put a bunch
of cars a lap down-Joey slipped way back with an ill-handling car.

Yeah, this seems to be pretty much the only track Danica actually
has-more or less-figured out. I would honestly not be surprised if she

Or just a light shower that only causes a caution. Some other reason for
a caution would work, too. A wreck or a spin, some real debris on the
track or a car stalling or puking oil on the track is fine. At least if
the incident or car issue involved a driver/drivers I can't say I'm a

Keselowski's scheme is actually one of my favorite schemes in Cup right
now. The Miller scheme has a history of being minimal, so I think it
fits with that while simultaneously looking different enough to be

Oh I agree Kasey is part of the problem, but as I said before it's just
easier to get rid of the crew chief. Kahne could very well be out of the

Somebody seriously needs to do a count on how many times she's either
been the lucky dog, or had a caution come out just when she was about to
be lapped. I can almost guarantee she would be in the top 3 of all
drivers in the past few years.

Gotta admit, Cole Whitt isn't doing too badly considering he's in the

I was told his performance in 2014 was good, but he lost spots in the
pits. "The struggles of 2014 was the fact that every time Kasey pitted
he lost 5 or more positions on track and he couldn't make them back up."
He hasn't good performance with Rodden, so he may play a role in the
issues. However, I can't say either way because I'm not a real big fan
of Kahne. I don't hate him, I just don't root for him or anything. He is
mid-30's age, which is when decline can begin.

The fact that the team is horrific at a track is one thing. But a driver
to be even worst is another. This is absolutely a driver's track. Even
Danica Patrick is doing decent. Trevor Bayne is driving like he has no
clue how to keep up. It'd be questionable if he was actually around the
20's, but not in the 30's to barely hanging in 27th at the moment.

Blatant race-altering drives me crazy. That caution was obviously
unnecessary, and the fact that Danica and others were about to be
lapped, ensuring Junior would never get back in Lucky Dog position,

I don't think anyone start and parks Martinsville. There no tunnel to
get in and out of the track so you can't load up the truck and leave
early like at other tracks. You might as well race the whole distance if
you can't go home before the race is over lol.

If there is any correlation, it's because Martinsville is a slower track
(much like how Road America and Montreal are/were among the slowest road
courses). In Nascar, she has generally been at her best on slow tracks
(excluding plate tracks).

But Martinsville is no way in hell a "roval" (which is a term that I
think is pretty silly and nonexistent and I usually hate when people use
it - but if there is such thing as a "roval", oddly shaped ovals like
Pocono and Phoenix are the best examples).

@346 There's a post on one of the Watkins Glen or Sonoma races that
talks about how Short Track guys like Rusty Wallace were so tough at
Road Courses.

Talked about how car set-up was very similar and since Martinsville is a
full of tight narrow low banked turns like you'd see on a road course,
you can adapt easily to them as a Road Course driver.

The thing about short tracks and road courses are generally based on
driver's skills. That's how drivers such as Jeff Gordon, Rusty Wallace,
Darrell Waltrip and others are so good at those tracks. Of course, it's
not the case for everyone, whereas Denny is good at short tracks, he's
just another Matt Kenseth type level of suck when it comes to road courses.

It varies on the drivers really. Also I'd say Darlington is among the
BEST track to determine who is really the best to be honest. David
Pearson FTW.

As a railfan I chuckled that Chris Buescher's #34 Ford had the CSX
railroad colors this week. The train track that runs alongside the track
at Martinsville belongs to CSX's rival Norfolk Southern.

Hated the call by Ives at the end of the race having Jr pit. The inside
lane matters more than tires late in the race. The second Larson pitted
from 5th Jr should have stayed out. He would have been 5th on the
restart and I'm 100% sure he would have finished better than 14th had he
restarted there.

I also love the low-downforce package, but tbh I don't think it really
affected today's race, since the speeds at Martinsville are so slow and
aero doesn't mean much. I didn't really notice a difference, the racing
was still the good beating and banging we usually see here.

Richmond will be interesting to see, for sure. That track (and Dover
too) is such a hit-or-miss track. You usually get wild races with great
finishes (like the spring 2014) or you get dull races in which nothing
much happens.

We finally see a full field for a race other than the Daytona 500 with
Jay Robinson fielding a second car for Reed Sorenson. It's nice to see,
and top of that, it's also nice to see that Sorenson didn't pull it
behind the wall after a handful of laps.

Okay, now that I'm settled in at the hotel:

First off, very disappointed in the fan activities today. Yesterday
there wasn't very much but I figured that was just because it was the
truck series race and there would be more today. I was wrong. Usually
they have this RC car thingy that the fans can race and it wasn't there
this year. Actually, they didn't have anything set up for the fans other
than merchandise, and the checkout line was HUGE. Heck, even the Buffalo
Wild Wings stand that is always there wasn't there this year. But enough
complaining.

The race itself was pretty meh. I applaud NASCAR for not throwing any
Jacques cautions all those times that the field got really strung out
(although the Wise caution was kind of questionable, especially
considering Danica was about to go a lap down and Junior was the free
pass).

No idea what happened to make Hamlin crash. It didn't look like he had a
flat tire and nobody was anywhere near him. Did he just lose it? I
wouldn't think so.

What a great job by Dale Jr. coming up through the field after getting
turned in the first few laps. Of course, he ended up finishing about ten
spots behind where he probably would've had Greg Ives not channeled his
inner Alan Gustafson and pitted him on the final caution.

Danica actually looked competent out there for a little while, but then
I guess she remembered that she's Danica Patrick, and she faded back to
the end of the lead lap cars by the end of the race.

Kyle Busch just had the best car today. Its as simple as that. Shame
that that last caution came out though, Kenseth would've made it
interesting up front, but I don't think he was going to get him.

All in all, not one of my more favorite Martinsville races, and the fan
experience today was a big disappointment. But I still had a good time,
and I'm glad I went.

I was able to catch the end of the race at my job...and I would like to
offer my overall thoughts:

-Kyle Busch simply had the best car all day long. Like him or not, he
definitely earned the win today. Pity the caution came out for McMurray
spinning late, Kenseth was about to make things interesting when that
happened...

-How about Allmendinger in SECOND? This has got to be one of the best
overall races of A. J.'s entire career. Started up front, ran in the top
10 virtually all race long, was able to mix it up with some of the top
contenders, and was able to come out second. Like I said earlier...I
wonder if other drivers will take whatever hat Mikey is wearing during
his grid-walk in the hopes it might bring them a good run :D


-Good comeback for Larson after the big crash at California two weeks
ago. Top 10 virtually all race long as well, and moved up to 3rd by the
finish. Maybe this could help get his season off the ground? We'll see...

-So far, Austin Dillon HAS to be the leading candidate for Most Improved
Driver of 2016. 4 top 10s and 2 top 5s already...phenomenal start to the
year for him. Definitely looks like the start of a breakout season for
him. I think I may honestly have underrated him as a driver...

-Hell, shout-out to Menard and Vickers for getting top 10 runs as well.
Nice to see some of the underdogs who started at the front of the field
run there most of the day!

-Junior probably would've gotten a top-5 finish if not for his decision
to pit under the last caution. Also, HELLUVA drop for Kenseth and
Harvick in those final stages. They went from solidly top-5 all race
long to some of the last cars on the lead lap!

-Again, I cannot say enough about how much of an improvement the new
aero package is. It is nice to be able to see drivers be able to have an
easier time making passes and moving up through the field than they did
in years prior. NASCAR made the smartest decision it has in a while
choosing this package over the one they used at Indy and the second
Michigan race last year (oh GOD, this season would've been TERRIBLE so
far if they'd chosen that package).

Not the best race of the year, but nonetheless, it still managed to be a
solidly entertaining one from start to finish, even if Martinsville was
a bit more quiet today than normal (only 8 yellow flags). So far, it
looks like we are on pace for a good season! Until the Chase comes along
and leads to more angry, needless feuding thanks to the elimination
format...

According to the TV broadcast, Hamlin said over the radio after the
crash that he wheel-hopped the car going into the corner and that caused
him to slam into the wall.

Everyone all excited over these top 10 runs,and I'm all over here

But awesome freaking job by AJ. Ran well all day, and came close to
winning! Larson finally had a great finish. Dillon another good run.
Vickers stayed up front all day and got a good finish!

Already, this season seems to be shaping up to be much more competitive
than last season. 23 drivers have scored top 10s and I think about 15 or
16 of those drivers have been competent and competitive in almost every
race, with some of the others showing strength here and there, like
Larson, Kahne, and Menard. You can also tell by the finishing order of
this race, and Auto Club, where you had guys like Chase Elliott, Ricky
Stenhouse Jr, AJ Allmendinger, Austin Dillon, and Brian Vickers who all
ran solidly inside the top 10 in both of those races and weren't really
expected to.

It's going to be interesting to see how the Chase grid shakes out after
Richmond, and hopefully the Chase doesn't cause a bad shift in what has
been an otherwise solid season.

Jayski says his contract runs through 2016 yet doesn't list him as a
potential free agent. His seat could get hotter if bad runs start adding
up. They could take a look at another veteran like Ryan Newman or Brian

The most mentioned drivers list is out, and as everyone can probably
guess Harvick leads the way with over 1,000 mentions of his name through
the first 7 races. A couple things caught my attention, Ryan Blaney made
the list which is awesome, and if you need more proof how much Danica's
stock has dropped in the last 3 years, she is not in the top 15. Kahne
is 15th (last on the list), and he only has 128 mentions; meaning she
possibly has less than 100 mentions of her name - that has to make that
new sponsorship deal worth the money.

This race marked Carl Edwards' 25th consecutive lead lap finish.
Notable, because it means he surpassed the previous record of 24 which

for three more races, before ending at 28 due to a blown tire at
Talladega. Over the course of this streak, Carl Edwards used seven free
passes and two wave-arounds.

If the numbers are correct, this race marked Cole Whitt's 91st Cup
start, surpassing Baxter Price's mark of most starts without a top-10
finish. Ironically, this was the same track Price achieved his best
career finish which was 11th in 1978.

Mike Joy, Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Gordon were the commentators. Matt
Yocum, Vince Welch and Jamie Little were the pit road reporters. Larry
McReynolds was the in-race analyst. Chris Myers and Michael Waltrip were
in the Hollywood hotel.
