Carl Edwards grabs his 18th career pole, putting him equal to Kyle
Busch, Donnie Allison, Lee Petty, and Joe Weatherly on the all-time
list. It's also his second straight pole this season, and the third time
in Edwards' career where he has achieved back-to-back poles (Loudon &
Indy 2015, Homestead 2011-Daytona 2012).

Ty Dillon and Landon Cassill had a little mishap in qualifying. Dillon
clipped the apron in turn 2 and spun around into the back of Cassill's
car, which was slow on the apron of the backstretch. Wasn't a big impact
but it was enough to cause some significant sheet metal damage.

Looking back at it, Bowyer would have been way better off taking 5 Hour
Energy to the Jr Motorsports #7 for a year and letting Allgaier stay in
the #51. It's funny how Allgaier ended up being the winner in this deal
for 2016 at least

Michael Annett didn't complete a lap at the last Bristol race so how

The old Carl Edwards is back. He's shown some flashes since 2011, but so
far I think he looks like a title contender again.

Carl has always been very good at Bristol as well.

He hasn't won more than 2 races in a season since he won 9 in 2008. I
know it's completely different with the current Chase format, but the
only driver to win a championship in the Chase era with less than 5 wins
that season was Kurt in 2004. I think he can do it, but only time will
tell if he actually will.

Poor Annett and Bowyer. Those HScott cars suck ROYALLY this year,
they're both capable drivers that deserve better. If I was Annett I'd
take that Pilot sponsorship and leave HScott high and dry next year with
no drivers and no money.

And that's why he needs to start winning. The past several years have
put a lot of drivers in a "need-to-win" basis much more than we realized
with this chase format. Hell, even 2011 proved that winning means more
than "just" consistency these days. You'll need both. Carl has one, he
needs to get the other down. His team need to make much less mistake on
pit road (last week at Texas) and not pull a Harvick every time he has a
strong run.

Also, Kyle Busch is one win away from tying Tony Stewart as the
winningest driver for Joe Gibbs Racing. Can he do it this weekend?

JGR once again is on a level I've never seen a team be on.

And I could easily see HScott closing his cup team at season end it's
just flat out pathetic week after week no blame to either Annett or
Bowyer the equipment is horrible. James Finch should of kept his team.

David Ragan qualifies 24th and continues to turn heads this season. No
clue what is up with HScott, they haven't looked even close to
competitive this year, even with Bowyer as one of their drivers. I also
agree with Ultimate Warrior #18, Harry Scott is going to have to pick up
the pace or his team is definitely shuttering. This is just sad.

It's kind of funny to see what happens when established drivers jump
into bad rides.

When Annett was at HScott last year, he did terrible and everyone was
calling for him to be replaced.

When Bowyer jumps into the same ride, Annett and Bowyer are both bad,
yet it is instead blamed on poor equipment, saying that the team should
instead be closed down. However, only now are we realizing how bad this
team is.

The results are telling me right now that if given a fair shot, Allgaier
will be a perennial race winner in Cup. He completely overachieved in
that 51 car.

The younger generation does not have $120 to spend per ticket to go to
the race. The older fans no longer feel like going to the track. I think
the racing is fine at Bristol. I went to the night race in 2011, and
don't live that far from the track.

Welp I missed commenting on the start of the race because my tablet
decided to die.
Don't ever buy a Nvidia Shield.
Always worked funky, slowed down/mini-locked up constantly and barely
lasted a year.

Crazy to see Bristol barely half full.

Yep, that was a massive tumble. From making the chase in 2005 to not
getting a single top 10 in 2006. Wonder why such a big tumble,
considering that the other Evernham cars that year, with Kasey Kahne
getting 6 wins, and Scott Riggs running pretty solid.

Other tumbles I can think of include Richard Petty from 1987 to 1988
(almost winning a race, and the top 10 in points, to a backmarker) and
Kurt Busch from 2011 to 2012, (Also had a move to what was then Phoenix
Racing).

And now Payton Manning is in the booth.

According to Mayfield (which means take it with a boulder sized grain of
salt), Evernham basically "sabotaged" Mayfield by paying no attention to
the #19 team once he started getting involved romantically with Erin
Crocker. Evernham and Crocker later ended up married, so there was
obviously some craziness going on behind the scenes, but Mayfield was
also a bridge burner and blamed everyone but himself for his entire
career (problems at Penske, the meth stuff late in his career, etc), so
I imagine the true story lies somewhere in the middle.

Competitive depth has really shrunk the past few years. Once competitive
teams like Red Bull Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing, Richard Childress
Racing, and Roush Fenway have either closed or are much less prominent.

The only big teams now are Hendrick, Penske, Gibbs, and Haas.

driver). Why not swap the wheel for a football with one of the greatest

Love that Peyton's at the track, although I think he might've jinxed
Junebug. I mean, trouble right at the start?? The only time I remember a
driver having issues that quickly was Jimmie Johnson at this track in
spring 2006, when he had a tire go down in turn 1, lap 1.

I don't particularly care for them in general, but I would really prefer
that they do single file restarts on short tracks. At least on
Intermediates there is multiple grooves, but at Bristol or Martinsville
you already know that one lane has a huge disadvantage at the start.

Agreed about the cars.
Old Bristol had the benefit of the cars having a front valence with
sloped/wedge noses to get under cars and pick their rear-end off the
track to help move cars out of the way with ease
If Bristol's banking had stayed the same after they repaved it, it would
have been a 500 lap bumper car parade with very little wrecks or passing
in the COT/Gen 6 flat front bumper with a splitter era.

Blaney is such a smart driver. He reminds me of Mark Martin, but also a

And people consider this to be the best track for Kyle Busch even though
he won here the most among all tracks. He hasn't been that dominance
here since he got sidelined for wrecking Ron Hornaday back in 2011 other

I don't think RPM is that much worse equipment wise than RCR. He's just
not a Cup level driver (outside of occasional top 15-20 runs) it seems
like. He's much more serviceable in NXS.

Almirola's car lost reverse, he was trying to get the recovery crew to
push his car back away from the inside wall so he could drive it back to
the pits. After arguing fir a few minutes he was forced out to the
ambulance while the #43 Ford ended up on the hook.

I hate to be a "Denny downer" but I don't like the idea of the screen
suspended

don't get me wrong, anything suspended is awesome but ask Kyle Busch how
a suspended camera worked out for him

...and those haulers are several-hundred Thousand dollars..if not more

That's pretty shocking. I could have sworn he had one other top five for
the Wood Brothers (I was thinking it was the 2011 Brickyard that Menard
won, but I guess not).

Pocono, Dover, Texas, Kansas, Michigan

those are the three off the top of my head who have 2 races

Pocono probably won't go anywhere, which sucks since it would do better
with 1 date

Dover, won't go anywhere

Texas only needs 1 date but as long as Burton is around it won't go
anywhere, and then Gossage won't allow it either

as long as Sprint is active in the sport it will get 2 dates, plus I
think people like kansas (although there is 1 race in the chopping block)

Bayne like Jr really benefited from having the outside on those last few
restarts. That being said him and Stenhouse both seemed to be running
around the to 10 all day. Biffle not so much, he was pretty invisible to
me until they put those tires on late in the race.

If you ask me he's probably the 3rd driver on that team now. Stenhouse
has put together a lot of good races this year and and Bayne has showed
speed in qualifying and today was able to seal the deal with a top 5. It
will be interesting to see if Greg can pick it up or if his younger
teammates will continue to outperform him as the year goes on.

Just wanted to give a shout out to BK Racing for Matt DiBenedetto's 6th
place finish. They kept their nose clean and were able to come home P6.
They seemed to have shown improvement this season and it's always a
wonderful feeling to see a team like them get a strong finish. I feel
like Ragan could have had a decent finish himself had it not been for
his engine woes.

It's also nice to see Bowyer finish Top 10 after how his season has
gone. It's no secret his miserable so hopefully he can at least smile
after this one.

And how about Trevor Bayne? He hasn't been setting the world on fire,
but he's sure shown improvement this year. If it weren't for strategy,
he still would have had a pretty respectable finish so I wouldn't
consider Bayne finishing Top 5 a "fluke" like I would have last year.

Good race overall but it's so hard when you have to restart on the
bottom on this track, it's almost unfair. Most of the drivers would
rather restart 6th or even 8th than 5th (it was the opposite last week
of course).

I'm sure JGR wishes they could have kept DiBenedetto. None of the teams
want to release drivers due to lack of funding, but that's part of the
sport unfortunately. But I would bet after seeing DiBenedetto ride the
career roller coaster, Gibbs would be happy to see DiBenedetto land on
his feet in a ride to where he can truly showcase his talent

I like the rule package NASCAR has. This package going back to
mechanical gripe with soft tires. This rule package actually helps out
underfunded teams like BK racing.

I think the attendance issues for the cup race at Bristol are much
deeper than the price of tickets.

1.) The retirement of Jeff Gordon. Like it or not Jeff was one of the
last links of the mid 1990's to early 2000's NASCAR as an active driver
that raced full time.

2.) Tony Stewart's injury. Tony was one of the more popular drivers in
the cup series and him not being on the track is showing an ugly preview
when Tony retires from cup racing after this season.

3.) NASCAR is going through a transition and NASCAR doesn't a lot of
likeable winning cup stars that got their start since 2009. This is
connected to reason 1 and 2. Lets face it that Joey isn't likeable to
put it mildly like Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson was before him. NASCAR
really needs Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott or Ryan Blaney to become proven
winners in the Cup series.

4.) The reconfiguration of the track. Bruton Smith's change to the track
actually started the decline of attendance at Bristol. What Burton did
after 2011 to the track didn't bring back the fans they already lost.

5.) NASCAR Fans have gotten sick of stuff like fake cautions that NASCAR
calls.

6.) Brian France's mouth hasn't help matters like supporting Donald
Trump or announcing the confederate flag isn't allowed. I am mentioning
those two things is because the confederate flag is a southern thing
that NASCAR Fans bring with them into the infield. Announcing support
for Donald Trump is opening a can of worms and Brian should've kept his
big mouth shut in terms of his political feelings.

Saw the last 80 laps or so at work, and I want to go ahead and start by
saying: I think this race had a little bit of something for ALMOST
everyone. You like intense close-quarters racing? This race had it. You
like drivers overcoming early adversity to get a good finish? This race
had that. You like seeing underdogs get a moment in the sun? This race
had that. And for the "peanut gallery" fans who only care about how many
crashes there are in a race...this race had plenty of those as well. Not
sure if I would call this THE best race of the year, but most eventful?
So far, for sure!

-Like Martinsville, the dominant and fastest car throughout the race
emerged victorious. Can't really complain about that. I admit, I was
surprised when they said this was the most laps Carl has EVER led in a
Cup race. I could have sworn there was a race where he led more...I'm
SURE JGR was happy to emerge victorious, but other than Carl...They
really didn't have a lot to be excited about today! Rough day for the
team...

-Junior came back from basically starting this race 2 laps down to
finishing second, helluva comeback. And it was nice to see Kurt Busch
actually happy that he got more out of his car than he thought it was
capable of by placing 3rd. Both the Busch brothers have their issues,
but overall...I still think Kurt is more mature than Kyle, in some ways...

-Chase Elliott earns a career best finish two weeks in a row. I actually
thought he would struggle today-but seriously, he could've potentially
had a top 10 finish in every race except Martinsville and (debatably)
Daytona. As said already...kid is gonna be a hell of a star down the
road. He's already GOT to be the early favorite for Rookie of the Year.

-Trevor Bayne 5th! I'm glad to see a great run out of him as I've always
liked him...but I get the feeling we are gonna be hearing a LOT about
this run from a certain racefangurl...

-Matt DiBenedetto SIXTH! Holy crap, who would've seen that coming at the
start of the day? It was really nice to see the guy genuinely emotional
after earning his first career Cup top 10. Reminded me of a tearful Rich
Bickle after he finished 4th at Martinsville many years ago! This is a
guy who has had to swallow his pride and take rides for some absolutely
garbage teams just to keep his name out there-it's great to see him have
a stellar run! (Though I get the feeling a lot of online "tough guys"
laughed and berated him for crying after getting a top 10...). Also, a
BK Racing car GOT A TOP TEN. At a NON-PLATE TRACK. A LEGIT top 10, at
that. Did hell freeze over? :D

-Clint Bowyer finishing 8th is not something I would've expected either
after seeing him struggle early in 39th. I wouldn't be surprised if this
is his only top 10 outside of plate races, though...

-This is probably one of the worst overall races of Kyle Busch's career.
Hit the wall twice after flat tires, spun out, AND got a pit road
speeding penalty. A day he will definitely want to forget! Not surprised
the crew loaded up the car after he hit the wall the second time-that
probably would've taken 100+ laps to repair, and with him already having
two wins, there really wasn't much to gain...Aside from Edwards, overall
it was a pretty embarrassing team for the JGR cars. Multiple flat tires
and everyone aside from the #19 finishing 20th or worse...

-When was the last time a Bristol race had 15 cautions? (With 102 laps
of yellow, at that-almost a quarter of the event.) This felt a lot more
like a race from the '90s-early 2000s here-this is more or less around
the number of cautions you would expect from a race here. I find it
interesting how the Xfinity race was very clean, and then promptly
followed up with a Cup race full of crashes...Reminds me of Darlington
last year where the exact same thing happened-one of the first races for
this aero package. (Edwards won that race as well...)

All in all, it was certainly an entertaining and eventful day at
Bristol! Not THE greatest race I've ever seen here, but the new aero
package combined with the racing we've seen here since they reworked the
track a few years ago made for a fun event.

That might be THE biggest surprise of the entire race, more so than some
of the top 10 finishers or the JGR cars' issues...

Granted, he was involved in one of the cautions, but he still pretty

Awesome race, really glad i decided to go. My man Trevor Bayne ran good
all day and fought back from a pit penalty and a crash to finish top 5,
good to see progress out of RFR. Brad had a really fast car even with
all the damage, would like to know what he could have done without the
penalty or the 30 times he wrecked.

I'm thinking now Landon Cassill might be a good fit for the #21 once
Ryan Blaney moves over to a full-fledged Penske team.

If he brought Snap Fitness over for a few races, and combined it with
the existing Motorcraft/Quick Lane sponsorship at Wood Brothers, and the
Penske alliance continued... that would be a pretty nice combination.

Matt D needs an upgrade, too, if he continues to exceed expectations at BK.

Nice to see these guys have solid runs at a non-plate track.

The thing I like about short track races playing out like this is that
you will see good runs and finishes from underdog teams from time to
time, such as DiBenedetto finishing 6th and Bowyer finishing 8th after a
downright craptastic start to the 2016 season with HScott Motorpsorts

Allgaier could do well in Cup with a better ride).

Trevor's career just hasn't panned out like I thought it was going to
after that Daytona 500 win. I thought he'd be the one doing what Ryan
Blaney is doing now, bringing good runs to the #21 team. If nothing

God I can't believe how many people on other sites are still crying that
Bristol sucks after yesterdays race (and last years races, and the year
before, etc).
Bristol is still a great short track but these people are stuck in the
past, blinded by nostalgia and think the single-file bump-and-run
temper-tantrum caution-fest Bristol is just the greatest and New New
Bristol is somehow 100x worse than Dover.
But a single-file wreck-fest breaks out at another track and they lose
their damn minds and call it horrible racing.

At this point I kind of hope SMI re-configures Bristol into another
Texcharlanta clone just to spite these whinny f'er's.

I remembered reading the NASCAR Scene or NASCAR Illustrated back in in
the late 90's with mentioning the complains about hotel prices. What you
mentioned is a well know issue in the NASCAR Community for years. I
don't think the price as much as problem for why fans aren't showing up
anymore though.

My reasoning is take a look at the television ratings for Cup races. The
television ratings have been down for the last couple years. When the
ratings of an event is on the decline, that speaks the problem is more
than hotel prices.

That would be a waste of money for SMI.

SMI back in March reported their 4th quarter income has a net loss of
3.5 million dollars. SMI matter of fact didn't paint a good picture how
their revenue for 2016 is. This a company that can't afford to do a lot
of track reconfiguration.

SMI actually reported a net loss of $34,350,000 last fiscal year.
Honestly, I cannot see how they are failing to make money on operations

Disagree. If they don't like the racing, too bad! Don't watch and whine
about something else. Honestly, I don't see why NASCAR needs to have a
huge following. While it basically lost all of its popularity in the
early 2000's with NASCAR's stupidity in the ruling depart, are they
getting those fans back? No.

I'd rather have a smaller group of NASCAR fans who are gear heads and
actually appreciate the races than a large group of fans that moan to no
end about every single detail.

I really think NASCAR is heading in the right direction. Bristol was the
best race I've seen in a long time and I feel like there is a bit more
competitiveness throughout the field.

NASCAR obviously still has alot of things to fix and while I hate almost
everything outside the racing like the point system, the other series
struggling, the politics, the racing has been damn good. (excluding Texas)

And I think its actually a positive that we are weeding out the casual
fans. Casual fans in the long run dont pay off as much as a more loyal
fanbase. As long as NASCAR can suffer some financial losses and get
through this tough phase they will be primed for a resurgence.

#698 I strongly agree and one perfect example is the finishing order of
the RFR cars. Biffle and Stenhouse were as good as Bayne but they
finished way behind him because they restarted on the bottom several
times at the end. I don't want to complain too much because I liked that
race too but I'm not surprised to see a lot of drivers mentioning this
in their post-race reports.

I just finished watching the video when Kyle Busch was coming back to
the garage to end his day for the race. Thankfully the fan was alright,
luckily she wasn't a few inches back from where she was standing,
otherwise Kyle Busch would be next Tony Stewart for those idiotic human
beings to brag about: Attempted Murder. Things happen, not anyone's
fault and Kyle stopped immediately for a while to ensure nothing else
happens as his crew was making sure she was okay.

Careful. IndyCar has a tiny following (.38 TV rating for IndyCar at Long
Beach vs. 3.15 for NASCAR at Bristol) and it fan base complains as much
if not more than NASCAR's. lol

This is the last thing I'd normally complain about, but with the result
jumbling (obviously unfair to some guys, namely Biffle and Stenhouse),
there has to be a better way. I'm for double file restarts, but when
they unfairly affect a driver's ability to finish where he deserved to,
I think an alternative needs to at least be discussed.

My solution is simple - any GWC or restart in the last 5% of the race's
scheduled distance should have the field line up single file.

I know, I know, manufactured excitement, but I thought the point of
racing was to determine the best on that given day. Running 2nd all day
and getting shuffled back on the final restart with four to go, only
because you got stuck in the inferior lane, is just a bad break that
really shouldn't be able to occur.

I see where you are coming from here, but please for the love of God do
not underestimate the power of a strong casual portion of a fan base.
From a biz perspective that is very important and NASCAR shouldn't
forget about those kinds of fans in order to keep growing the sport.

I just don't understand what this waiver rule actually means, sort of
understood when they waived Kyle last year since he was hurt in a NASCAR
sanctioned race, but they waived Tony whenever he was hurt all on his
own riding a dune buggy. I don't think it matters because Tony won't
make it to the top 30 anyway or win a race, but still.

One NASCAR gave Kurt a waiver last year, after they suspended him, you
pretty much knew anybody who wanted a waiver would get one. it would be
better if they scrapped the "must attempt every race" rule and made the
rule simply that you have to be in the top 30 in points with a win.

I agree the Kyle getting waivered but Tony shouldn't, but Tony will
really need to step up the game big time to reach top 30. The past
couple of years, racing all 36 races, his best was 25th.

Normally I'd agree with that but NASCAR had to give Kurt the waiver.
They overreacted due to the domestic violence incidents that the NFL had
the year before and ultimately suspended Kurt for something he did not do.

NASCAR messed that whole situation up. They should have waited until he
was actually charged with a crime. Not go off of what the civil court
judge said which was pretty much, well racing is an aggressive sport so
Kurt must be aggressive therefor he hit her...... and no I'm not making
that up while that's not word for word what the judge said he did say
something to the likes of that.

Austin Dillon and Ty Dillon both ran cars sponsored by Bass Pro Shops
against each other in this race. The Dillons finished 25th and 26th with
Ty literally one-upping his big brother. Ty Dillon's drive here in the
Stewart-Haas #14 was the last race for the team before Tony Stewart
returned from his early 2016 injuries to take over the car for the
following race at Richmond.

I think the whole point of the "must start every race" proviso is to
prevent a team from winning, skipping a bunch of races, and then
returning for the Chase. Waivers are granted when a driver misses a race
due to circumstances beyond his control.

It's really that simple.

I have to disagree. If the drivers of the 4 and the 14 had switched thus
far, I believe Harvick would still be running up front. Of course, not
having Rodney Childers would be rough, but you have to remember who the
drivers are.

Ty Dillon has never shown anything to indicate he's a capable Cup
driver, so expecting success in the 14 would've been unwarranted. As for
Vickers, he's actually had a few decent runs, and if not for some
misfortune his average finish would certainly be in the teens.

Obviously the unit as a whole isn't quite up to par with the 4 and 41,
but I think you're underrating the difference a driver makes.

shouldn't expect too much from him to begin with. As for Vickers, it
seemed every race he was flirting with a top 10-15, until something bad
happened. Anyways, the #14 team had to accomodate two different
replacement drivers, instead of just one, which I'd assume was pretty
difficult to have to adjust to.

Is the #14 on par with the #4 or #41? No. But unlike last year, Vickers
and Ty Dillon have shown that the #14 is not worse than the #10 (Danica
was 25th, Stewart was 28th).

Mike Joy, Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Gordon were the commentators. Matt
Yocum, Chris Neville, Vince Welch and Jamie Little were the pit road
reporters. Larry McReynolds was the in-race analyst. Chris Myers and
