If there's anything that can be taken away from today-it's that at least the finish was not controversial (no dispute at all who was out front when the yellow waved), and despite all the carnage (two flips, 3 big wrecks, several more multi-car incidents, and probably damned near 30 cars either totaled or in need of serious repair if they are to be raced again)...there were no driver injuries in this race. I think we got really lucky, though... And hey, we made it all 500 miles! How about that? Taking away the plates isn't really an option because then the cars would be going 230+ MPH and the crashes would be even worse at that speed (although the field would be more spread out, so there wouldn't be as much a risk at that speed). One of my biggest worries is that we're going to see a car clear the catchfence one day and end up in the grandstands, killing a bunch of spectators. Know that's really morbid, but with the amount of cars we've seen get airborne and in the catchfence over the past few years, I have a feeling in my gut that this COULD possibly happen someday. Honestly I think nothing like this happened at Daytona because even though they're both plate tracks Dega and Daytona drive very differently. Daytona's no where near as wide, you can't move around and make moves there like you can at Dega. Having a wider track here probably just makes the drivers feel they can make more aggressive moves. Not saying cars flying in the air is a good thing, but the reason there were more crashes today than in the past 20-30 restrictor plate races was because the drivers were downright aggressive. Even when the restrictor plates first came in, the best cars still ran in the front and there was enough of a performance gap that the packs still broke up. The better cars moved to the front and while you still had some packs, the size of them allowed the drivers to maneuver around a little. Nowadays, everyone is in one giant pack and it takes the entire green flag run before the pack splits up, and that just from the pit stops. We see three wide 10 rows deep and now that the drivers ability to move to the front depends on 100 different factors of which they only control 5 of them. At one point today, they were imitating the Indy 500 pace laps only they were going at 200 miles per hour. This isn't racing. Now, I realize that the threat of rain today, may have contributed to the demolition derby we saw. We usually don't see this level of carnage and that is partly due to these guys running single file at some point during the race. But at some point even NASCAR needs to say that things are getting out of hand (more than what we saw today.) Something needs to be done. 740. The safety in the cars are greatly improved from the 90's no fatalities in 15 years are giving these drivers a sense of less danger. The crashes are getting crazy I love plate racing it's my favorite type of racing but the drivers gotta use better judgement. Finally, he only has three top 10 starts at 'Dega so far, each of which has resulted in a win. 750. Most fans want a mayhem & caution filled demo-derby at Bristol but the same thing happens on a plate track and they call it horrible. And don't give me the whole "but injuries and death are more likely on plate tracks" spiel. Injuries & death can happen on short tracks too. Most of the injuries to happen on plate tracks the past decade have been when drivers find the part of the track ISC cheaped out on and didn't add SAFER barriers to it. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Auto-racing is extremely dangerous, no matter the venue. If you don't like it, go watch something else. 751. cjs3872 posted: 05.01.2016 - 7:33 pm Rate this comment: (3) (2) Guys, part of the problem at Daytona and Talladega with so many cars being so close together at the finish has to do with the cautions repeatedly bunching up the field. One way to lessen the effect of that is to go to a P.A.C.E.R. light system like USAC used at Indy in the 1970s, which slowed the field down under caution but didn't legally allow the field to bunch up. Doing this may make it more penal for those that lose the draft, as it wouldn't allow them to bunch up under caution, thus keeping those that lose the draft far behind the leaders. This might also do away with the practice of intentionally laying back during the race, for fear of getting so far behind that it would be extremely difficult to catch back up. The only problem with such a method to slow the cars down under caution without allowing them to catch up would be the enforcement of such a rule, which is what USAC ran into in the 70s. Another problem unique to Talladega is that the track is so much wider than Daytona that handling and driving skill aren't as important at Talladega as it is at Daytona, and drivers can easily get four and five wide for the entire length of the track, which is why there are so many more bug wrecks at Talladega than there are at Daytona, and this race showcased that perfectly. In the Daytona 500, there were no big wrecks and only a few minor crashes, mainly because the track there is only 3.5 lanes wide, and Daytona's relatively narrow width naturally spreads the field out in the draft, while Talladega is about 5.5 lanes wide, making daring, and even impossible moves more tempting on the wider surface, and more bad wrecks are the result. The fact that there have been three caution-free races at Talladega (1997 #1, 2001 #1, and 2002 #2) is a miracle. Now, it was good to see some unusual faces up front, none of whom spent more time up there than 2011 Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne, who led a career-high 22 laps, and would almost certainly have finished in the top five for the second time in three races if not for the rash of late cautions. But the combination of poor positioning on restarts (the exact opposite of what happened at Bristol) and not being willing to take the extra risks that some of the others are willing to take knocked him back a few positions on those late restarts, and if not for that final crash, he might have ended up 15th, which would have been a REALLY sour pill to swallow, considering how he ran. That exact same thing happened to him last July at Daytona, when he was running in the top five for most of the second half of the race but got shuffled back due to the aggressiveness of others. Despite all that, Bayne's recent performances have gotten him into the Chase Grid for the first time, though I don't think it's likely he'll stay there. Either way, Roush's improvement in performance, which I think is a year ahead of schedule, has to give a boost in moral to the Ford fans, though I think that there's a very good likelihood that Penske's team may be the only one that wins in 2016 and the only Ford organization represented in the Chase in 2016. I actually think Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. or Ryan Blaney give Ford the best chance at a third Chase entrant in 2016. 752. The most amazing finish today, in my mind, was the third-place run by Austin Dillon. He got significant damage in two separate crashes today, yet they taped up that front end and he nearly had a shot to win! The only reason he didn't was because he pulled out to pass Kyle Busch for second on the home stretch, which effectively handed Keselowski the win. I'll be the first to say that Kevin Harvick's wreck on the final lap looked eerily similar to Dale Earnhardt's wrecks in the same spot in both 1996 (when he broke his collarbone) and 1998 (when he rolled on his side with Awesome Bill). And as I've said numerous times over the years, Bayne's style is like that of Terry Labonte and Benny Parsons, and all that style did for Labonte was to get him into the Hall of Fame with two championships, each basically in a different era in the sport's history, and 22 wins, including career bookend Southern 500 wins, in addition to multiple wins on tough tracks like Rockingham, North Wilkesboro, Pocono, Bristol, and the road course at Riverside, CA, as well as a career with such longevity that his first and last top five finishes were a staggering 28 years apart. That's right, TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS! And all that style did for Parsons was to net him a championship (1973), a Daytona 500 win (1975), a World 600 win (1980), and make him an annual championship contender, as well as one of the most respected drivers in the modern history of the sport. As for why I think Stenhouse and Blaney are more likely to be Ford's third Chase representative, if they have three? I just think they're more likely to take the gambles necessary, especially on restarts, to gain and keep better track position for the duration of the race, as well as taking the risks later in the race. Bayne's more steady than Stenhouse and has a better team around him than Blaney does, and if races came down to longer runs, I would actually like his chances better. And while Roush is running better (like I previously stated, their improvement is about a year ahead of schedule), I still believe they have a problem on their hands, where the driver line-up is concerned. Given the particular strengths and weaknesses of their drivers, I believe the key to Roush's success in 2016 is whether or not Stenhouse can continue his improvement, especially where consistency is concerned, but if he does continue to improve, he may make it into the Chase as the third Ford driver. His risk taking is okay, as long as he doesn't overdo it, and ability to keep that wild streak in check, in comparison to past seasons is one reason why the #17 team has improved. As for the race, the fact that two cars got on their lid and a third got on it's side has to be VERY concerning for NASCAR, because they've been trying to keep cars on the ground since the cars were downsized in 1981, which was when cars getting airborne at Daytona and Talladega began to become a real problem, and the fact that two cars flipped wildly in this race is something that's not going to make the rules makers very happy. That said, I'm not sure there's anything that NASCAR can really do about the racing at NASCAR's two fastest tracks, nor do I think there's anything they can really do to completely stop cars from flying when they get backwards at those speeds. The real scary thing is that the paving of what used to be a grassy area was supposed to stop, or at least limit cars getting airborne and flipping, yet Matt Kenseth's car got up as if it were on the old grassy area, not the current pavement, and on top of that, nearly got into far less secure catch fencing on the inside than what exists above the outer retaining wall. And where were the roof flaps on Chris Buescher's car, because they never deployed in his crash. Buescher's flip may have been unavoidable because of how his car got violently turned to the right with the weight shift causing his car to turn over, but even then, the roof flaps should have deployed, and they never did. That's something NASCAR is not going to be happy with, and something even the commentators noticed. 769. This is closer to the blower style flips that NASCAR is trying to eliminate. Here's the issue. Danica hit him in right front. The impact cause this part of the car to drop and allowed the left front to lift ever so slightly. It was just enough for air to get underneath. This turned the car over before both roof flaps deployed. This is something that NASCAR can look into to not let air get under the car in the first place. In regards to Chris Buescher's wreck. Roof flaps are completely ineffective. The work when the car wants to flip with the wind. Buescher's flip against it. His flip started when he got hit in the right rear in just the right spot. There really isn't much that NASCAR can do to prevent this. Also, his left side roof flap to come open, but he was already on the drivers door. Afterwards he was never in a position that would have allowed them to deploy, and damage to the roof probably prevented them from working. 778. And SAFETY?! Seriously? Isn't the fact that every single driver walked away unscathed an indicator of just how safe it is? Not saying cars flying in the air is a good thing, but the reason there were more crashes today than in the past 20-30 restrictor plate races was because the drivers were downright aggressive. Don't blame NASCAR and the tracks and everyone else when the drivers cause the crashes. For every action there is a reaction. If you don't consider that to be a great NASCAR race, then you obviously don't understand that this is the 2010s...you get what you get these days, and I for one am not complaining after today's race." I didn't watch it, but I'm sure it was a great race. And I get that these wrecks are caused by driver error, and nothing really can be done to eliminate that, but you can easily manipulate the consequences of these errors, or reduce the amount of circumstances where a driver error could lead to catastrophic events. Frankly, I don't think it's a bad idea to at least consider implementing the road courses on both Daytona and Talladega, at least if you're not going to take any other safety precautions whatsoever to prevent injuries. Scrubs off the speed of the cars, reduces the ability of the cars to travel in a pack; it would do wonders for safety. But of course we have to keep "tradition" and "entertainment" so this will never happen. Plate racing is among the most entertaining racing of the year in my opinion. I try not to miss one (unfortunately, extenuating circumstances caused me to have to miss today's race). But how much longer can we maintain this level of entertainment if it comes at the price of at least 2-3 savage crashes each year? 779. joey2448 posted: 05.02.2016 - 1:56 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Also, is it just me or did Harvick's crash look very similar to Sr.'s crash here 20 years ago? With rain in the forecast, the drivers were racing to halfway, and once they got to lap 94, they were racing in the event that rain could arrive at any minute. It made for a compelling race, but the aggression also caused a few wrecks. There's no ultimate solution for this, but I think the way to curb the consequences of those actions would be to greatly reduce the horsepower of the engines (like 200 bhp or something) and take the plates off. NASCAR and teams would have to work hard to keep an average lap pace of 190 mph or so, but at least they wouldn't be traveling in huge packs. In IndyCar racing, since the cars are open-cockpit, and until two years ago, open-wheel, the major problem is driver safety, as if a car gets airborne, the driver is potentially in major peril, and if a car is it by a car going even 50-70% of full speed, the results can be catastrophic, as they were in the Alex Zanardi crash in 2001. But in NASCAR, the safety focus is more on non-competitors and crewmen than it is the drivers. Since the drivers are in an enclosed cockpit, not to mention a full-bodied car, the chances of serious injury are far, far less than they are in an open-cockpit car. But because the full-bodied cars travel at close to 200 MPH on tracks surrounded by grandstands at most locations, spectator safety is more focused on than driver safety is, since NASCAR has done a great job there. That's why a number of high profile drivers were highly critical of allowing the tires to be bolted on with fewer than the full amount of lug nuts, and why NASCAR has always paid attention to cars getting airborne at the fastest tracks, something that's been a major problem since the cars were downsized in 1981. For example, one of the scariest incidents in recent NASCAR memory was when Brian Vickers lost a wheel in the 2008 Coca-Cola 600. That wheel was hit by David Gilliland and careened into a tent area. Fortunately, nobody was seriously injured. In yesterday's race, there was a real chance that Matt Kenseth's car could have gone through, or even OVER the catch fencing on the INSIDE of the backstretch, something that the "higher-ups" have never even considered a real possibility. And if that car had broken through or gone over that catch fencing, heaven knows what could have happened. And for all the good it's done over the years, this is the one weakness of the SAFER barrier. While we didn't see it yesterday, the SAFER barrier can, and has actually launched cars into catch fencing. Austin Dillon's crash at the end of last year's Firecracker 400, as well as Carl Edwards' crash at the end of this race in 2009 are prime examples of cars being launched by landing on top of the SAFER barrier, and there are other examples, as well. The question here is, how can NASCAR, or the creators of the SAFER barrier, increase the height of the SAFER barrier so that it doesn't launch cars into the protective fencing. I think that's the next big safety enhancement for the spectators. One thing that can be done to enhance driver safety is to eliminate the angled walls. A number of drivers this weekend found angled walls, and that has always been a major problem, where driver safety is concerned. Some of the worst crashes in Indy history, including THE worst crash in Indy history, back in the 1964 Indianapolis 500, were just prior to the pit lane when that wall was angled prior to the reconfiguration there in 1974, and some of the worst impacts in Daytona history were just prior to the pit entrance when that inside wall was angled just prior to the 1984 reconfiguration of that part of the track at Daytona. And more recently, there have been the bad crashes at Kentucky and Las Vegas with the angled walls there. Two of the worst kinds of impacts a driver can have is with an angled wall and the end of a wall. Objects are routinely placed at the end of the pit wall to soften such a blow there. But the angled walls need to be eliminated, if at all possible. 790. I seem to remember that this did help, (not huge but did make a difference). There are ways to make these races safer, but all of them take the entertainment value out of them and NASCAR will not do that. NASCAR is in the money making business. I can't say when, but as well as they seem to be running, I believe we'll see the #3 car in victory lane before this season ends, and perhaps sooner than later. Among drivers not already qualified for the Chase, Austin is fifth in points, so I think he'll be in the Chase, whether he wins or not, especially since, unlike last year, this seems to be a year where not that many drivers may end up getting wins in the first 26 races (only six have wins in the first 10, with four 2-time winners). And no matter where or when it happens, the moment that RCR #3 returns to victory lane will be one of the most emotional moments the sport will have seen in a very long time, especially for those that remember when seeing Dale Earnhardt, Sr. drive the #3 car into victory lane almost seemed like a matter of routine. 802. At this rate they might as well do a random draw for the Championship contenders at Homestead. 809. cjs3872 posted: 05.06.2016 - 2:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) In other words, #808, if nothing serious happens during the first two segments of the All-Star Race, the key battle to watch will be the one for 12th near the end of Segment 2, because if most of the starting field is left after two segments, it will be impossible for anyone to pass the rest of the cars in just 13 laps, and the driver that finishes 12th in the second segment may very well win the race. If I'm not mistaken, NASCAR tried this in 2002 and '03 with the final segment inversion, and it worked against the best car, and it figures to again with the fast cars stuck in traffic, allowing one car to get away from the pack at the beginning of Segment 3, making it impossible to catch, even for cars on fresher tires. We may even see some of the leaders pit BEFORE the end of Segment 2 to try to get a lower finishing position. So the key to the All-Star Race will be who can sandbag near the end of Segment 2, or pit before the end of the second segment to get up front for the final segment. 810. joey2448 posted: 05.06.2016 - 3:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) To be clear, here are the revamped All-Star race rules: -Two 50-lap segments. The first 50 laps will require the drivers to make a minimum two-tire stop under green. The drivers will then be required to do another minimum two-tire stop at the first break. In the second 50-lap segment, drivers are required to make a minimum two-tire stop under green BEFORE lap 85 (or lap 35 of that segment). -The final segment will be 13 laps (not sure where they came up with that number, lol). Before that dash to the finish, a draw will determine whether the first 9, 10 or 11 cars will have to do a four-tire stop, while the remaining cars will not pit. Only green flag laps will count in the final segment, and the idea is that cars with fresher tires will have to fight their way to the front. In my opinion, I credit NASCAR for trying to spice it up and give fans a better opportunity to see some passing, which has been lacking in recent All-Star races. I like they they switched to THREE segments, which is how I've always said it should be done. 811. dennyfan11 posted: 05.06.2016 - 4:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Honestly, i'm glad they're switching Talladega with Kansas. Go four tires and stay just outside the pitters so you're promoted up to the lead pack, or two and try and hold on to the rear of the affected group so you pit at lap 100? Or you could do that with four, I guess... 814. Braindead Zombie posted: 05.06.2016 - 6:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also there are now four drivers who transfer to the All-Star race instead of three. 815. cjs3872 posted: 05.06.2016 - 6:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) That's not true, #813. After the second segment, pit road will only be open for MANDATORY pit stops for the front runners. For those behind the group of cars at the front for whom pit stops will be required, pit road will be CLOSED, meaning those 12th on back will not be allowed to pit, forcing them to stay out. However, if there are no major incidents in the first two segments of the race, this will play right into the hands of the drivers not allowed to pit, especially if their car is good out front, because with only 13 laps to work with, it will still be next to impossible for those that did pit to work through the field and catch the leader. That's why the 12th position is such an important position late in that second segment, and why I think there will be some sandbagging after that mandatory Segment 2 pit stop. The drivers in 10th and 11th may have to pit, but also might not have to, but those 12th on back will not be allowed to pit, but they may end up with a track position advantage. The question is, would any front running cars risk an extra pit stop in Segment 2 and falling off the lead lap to make sure they're back where they can't legally pit to gain a track position advantage over those that finish among the leaders in that segment? 816. 23andJoe posted: 05.06.2016 - 6:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Why they don't go back to, say, the system used in 1992 - y'know, when there were good finishes - is beyond me... 817.
