NASCAR_WXMAN says there's an 80% chance of the race starting on Sunday,

Perhaps their performance in the showdown led to a spark for the team...

Truex on the pole again. It's the first time that he's had multiple
poles in a season since 2009.

For once Gibbs doesn't look supreme in qualifying.

I was kind of disappointed only 40 cars entered for the 600, but at the
start of the season didn't think the #30 would make it this far, and two
entries by Premium seemed iffy.

I miss the part-time teams that used to take a shot at some of the
races, but at least the 40 car quota is being met.

And it will probably fall in the lap of NASCAR's most hated driver, Kyle
Busch, just like the last two times. I don't want it to happen, but
that's probably going to occur. On the bright side, that would mean
Shrub would crash out of next weekend's race at Pocono, just like the
last two times in the races after the wins he snatched away from Martin
Truex Jr.

Truex's team screwed up each time and Busch capitalized, that's not
stealing a win, it's making the most out of an opportunity. Stealing a
win would be like Jr.'s win at Phoenix last year. I like Truex and all,
but you would think his team could finally get their strategy and pit
stops right when it counts. Guess not...

Reading the last two posts, you have to be able to CLOSE the deal and
that's something that Truex and the 78 team have had trouble doing.
Martin Truex has had wins in the bag but it always seems like it's
circumstances that happen that he cannot close the deal. It's no
different than a football team fumbling the ball and the other team
picks the ball up. Kyle Busch put himself in position to win and then
they have capitalized on those opportunities. That's one thing Kyle
Busch and team have been able to do since Kyle returned from his
injuries, the 18 team has made the most of the opportunities.

It's tempting to think that NASCAR may be subsidizing the #55 a wee bit
after the sub-max entries earlier in the season. Not saying it's the

I honestly don't see the hype with people congratulating drivers for
qualifying just outside the top 20. Sure, if it was top 10/15 that'd be
different for a low funded team. It's not like this is entirely his BEST
qualifying effort to date either.

on a 1.5 mile track where they seem to struggle the most.

There's nothing wrong with it @Windows Millennium Edition, I was just
stating I don't see how it's any different than before (they even
qualified 25th at Las Vegas, another 1.5 mile track), plus anything in
the lower half of the field (21st or worse) I don't find
"congratulating" enough. I don't want to cause argument over this,
however I was just curious as to what you were to say about it. See ya

I agree. It always baffles me when people go crazy over Matt DiBenedetto
qualifying 30th. I can see people praising someone for qualifying in the
top 10, 15, or in extreme cases, the top 20, but 25th?

NASCAR actually had 12. Kyle Busch, Hamlin, Kenseth, Edwards, Logano,

This stat is flawed. IndyCar ran 16 races last year with 9 different
winners (56%) while NASCAR ran 36 races with 12 winners (33%). Not to
mention the fact that IndyCar runs with nearly half the number of cars
as opposed to NASCAR the entire year minus Indianapolis.

By the looks of it, I would give it about a 90% chance that the race

Official NASCAR forecaster Brian Neudorff just gave his, and it's really
bad. He calls for a 55% chance of the race starting today, but only a
50% chance of it reaching halfway, and a mere 40% chance of it finishing
today.

Yeah I agree, I still would love to see Carl Edwards win a championship
this year to continue the "new champion" trend, followed by Joey Logano
next season. This way we can have the most consecutive different
champions since 2011 in the history of NASCAR Sprint Cup series.

After the excitement and shock that the Indy 500 provided, the Coke 600
has a TALL order to step up to its' level. Will it be as good or
memorable a race?

Honestly...I DOUBT it, but let us hope that this race can at least
provide some solid racing action and manage to stand out in its' own right.

Truex is the king of 1 1/2 milers thus far-he's led nearly 400 laps at
them thus far this year, more than any other driver.

^Tire problem; he had a rub that cut down his tire and lost 2 laps in
the pits. They did more work on the car under the competition caution,
so he was unable to use the wavearound and remains two laps down.

Ryan Newman is in the top-15, running the Whelen colors this week on the
#31. Whelen's famous red-and-white paint scheme looks natural on that
car, probably helps they've run an RCR-styled #31 in so many races and
series before it's something of a surprise it took them this long to try
Cup.

Larson's paint scheme is Ganassi's famous red with a yellow lightning
stripe scheme used by his CART team from 1996 through 2001. Scott
Dixon's IndyCar is back to running it this year. The team is running it
on the NASCAR #42 tonight tying in with the Indy 500 since Juan Pablo
Montoya won that race in 2000 using it.

scheme Ganassi-owned cars dominated the Champ Car Series with in the

I think it was, because they didn't have it in practice or qualifying. I
kind of like it though. Back in the day I always liked when teams would
have other logos scattered kind of randomly on the hood besides their
primary sponsor (like how JGR used to do with MBNA/Circuit City and
whatnot).

Speaking of last minute paint scheme changes, I notice that the #42
switched to a white number for the race after running a red number all
weekend.

I knew he'd be even faster this year with the JGR equipment. I was also
right about them sacrificing some of the consistency they had last year
for the greater speed, but honestly they've still probably been one of
the 6 or 7 most consistent teams all year so far (and have had some
races like Dover and Fontana where they should have had better finishes).

It's just great to see. So happy for Martin to finally be in a ride
situation that's not either a total circus (DEI once he got up to Cup)
or run by a couple of sleazebags (MW and Kauffmann). I still find myself
pulling for this team every week.

the Coke 600.

The caution was for Jeffrey Earnhardt smacking the wall between turns
3/4. He rode up against it for a good ways so I will give NASCAR a pass

green-flag stops so that allowed other guys a chance to (briefly) lead.

Truex has only been passed once on track all night long for the lead-and

Actually, when I think about it this race pretty much IS the same race
as the '04 Coke 600-one driver pwning the field with lots of long
green-flag runs and few cautions. The biggest difference is that in the
'04 race I remember that Elliott Sadler was Jimmie Johnson's perpetual
hanger-on for most of the night; nobody has really seriously challenged
the #78 tonight.

Edwards gets another pit road speeding penalty from when he was serving
the penalty. Ouch. Kyle Petty got like three in a row once at North
Wilkesboro but its been a while since I've seen multiple ones consecutively.

I really don't like saying this but as I have said before, I don't think
Jr will win ever again. I don't think it is his doing, I think it is the
fact that his pit crew messes him up or his crew chief doesn't know how
to do the job. I might be wrong and it may be all Dale Jr. I hope and
pray he will win again but as of right now he has 26 Cup wins and the
odds say he will retire with 26 Cup wins. I hope I'm wrong because I
really want him to win again and I'm sure I'm not the only person out
there that wants Dale Jr to win again. At least I can dream of Jr
winning again.

I understand Johnson and Truex trying their hardest to catch Truex. They
don't care that Martin is overdue for a win and has been utterly
dominating this whole race-they want to win and add to their total to
help increase their chances of advancing through the Chase. Can't blame
them at all for that. Let's face, would YOU just want to run second? I
don't think any of us would if we were in their shoes...

But man, it's gonna be depressing if one of them steals the win away.
Considering how dominant Truex has been it would be borderline criminal
for him to lose this race...

Well, this caution WILL allow Truex to break the laps led record, but
can he actually hang on to win? With Harvick and Johnson's cars running

No Fords have won this race since 2002 when Mark Martin won,
uncharacteristically driving very aggressively that night as he banked
the No Bull 5 million then gave the whole thing to his crew. It doesn't
look like that fact will change tonight but Martin was named to the
NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2017 earlier this week and flew in from the

As much as it would suck for Truex it would be funny as hell if Chase

As for Jr I think Ives is a part of the problem. I mean since Ives got
there Jr has really only been a major threat to win at the plate
tracks... In a car that wasn't even built by Ives. Now I don't think

The most dominant performance ever seen in NASCAR to date (Truex led
ALMOST all 600 miles) will not end in heartbreak for the #78 team, as
Truex indeed has more than enough fuel and EASILY wins by nearly 3
seconds over Harvick. This is one case where you could pretty much say
the race was won the moment that car took the green flag!

So in addition to this the #78 also dominated Texas and Kansas. If they
can keep this up and carry it into the Chase, I'm starting to think they
might be even more serious title contenders than they were last year
considering how many 1.5 milers are in those last ten. I think they've
far and away been the best on these tracks this season.

While this may be the most dominance performance in NASCAR history, this
is also the 2nd straight race (Matt Kenseth at Dover, Truex Jr tonight)
where a struggling of bad luck for a Toyota driver all year finally
scores a win to get a lock for the Chase.

I will *gladly* sit through a dull race if it means someone as deserving
as Truex is the dominator. Start to finish, this was a pleasure to
watch. That 78 team and Truex were utterly flawless all night.

And that last restart where Johnson almost cleared him but he fought
back? Pure determination

Haven't I already said this? Once someone other than the "SAME OLD
EIGHT" wins, he will probably disappear. I don't anticipate an "I was
wrong, my bad" post out of him.

Honestly, this was probably the least competitive race of the entire
season (well, obviously considering how many laps the #78 led!), but I'm
still...awed we actually saw dominance of THAT level in the modern era.
Jeff Burton didn't slaughter the field this badly in 2000 when he led
flag-to-flag in the New Hampshire restrictor plate fiasco!

Of course this race didn't top the Indy 500 and the jaw-dropping shock
we all received when Alexander Rossi won in his very first try, but
overall, I think it was a pretty good Memorial Day weekend for racing
(didn't see the Monaco Grand Prix, so I can't really comment on that).

To think-a team that 10 years ago in NASCAR was a no-budget backmarker
effort has evolved in a decade to the point where they can now say that
they own the record for the most miles ever led by a single driver and
team in NASCAR history. It's amazing to see just how far-admittedly,
with more than a little help along the way-the Denver-based Furniture
Row team has come.

It sure would be nice to see more of today's hard-luck low-budget teams
have that chance to evolve...

Good God that was a dull race.
Don't get me wrong, Truex is my man. I've been a fan of his since his
Busch days, and I'm SO happy to see him get this win. But compared to
the Monaco and Indy events, this was a borderline waste of time.

*Martin Truex wins...393 Laps...FLAWLESS VICTORY. But seriously that's a
serious butt-kicking tonight...and unfortunately, yes if Harvick or
Johnson or even Jeff Gordon in his prime did this, it would be a big
snoozer but luckily Truex did something that even they didn't accomplish.
*3 paint schemes tonight were reminiscent of some old rides on the
Sprint Cup and Busch Series. Newman's Whelen car was reminiscent of Ted
Marsh's Busch car that Steve Park drove as well as Junior's Patriotic
car was reminiscent of his 2014 National Guard car, and the ultimate nod
to the past, Martin Truex wins with Bass Pro Shops again, the sponsor he
drove for at DEI and his first trip to victory lane with them since his
first one in 2007.
* This race shows that good things come to those who wait and those who
work and never give up.

dominate days are well over and it'd be nice to see one last time if
any. Everyone makes a big deal out of since we have always had a driver
dominate from the start of this sport. Nothing new.

Meanwhile, Kurt Busch got his 11th top ten in 13 races this year. He
still hasn't even really contended for a win, but consistency wise this
is easily the best start to a year Kurt has ever had.

While it wasn't the greatest race by any means, any time one performer
thoroughly dominates a sporting event, like Martin Truex, Jr. dominated
this race, it sometimes is worth watching it, if for no other reason
than the significant historical context of the rout that is being
watched, knowing that such a moment in the highest levels of
professional sports is extremely rare. Such was Martin Truex, Jr.'s
performance in the Coca-Cola 600, which will be talked about as long as
the event continues to be run. His 392 laps led out of 400 (98%) is
something that's never been seen in any of NASCAR's crown jewel events.

For example, when Richard Petty dominated the 1964 Daytona 500, leading
184 of the 200 laps, he led 92% of the race. And no other Coca-Cola 600
winner, Daytona 500, Southern 500, Brickyard 400, or Talladega winner
even comes close, in terms of percentage of the race dominated in a win.
And the only Indianapolis 500 winner that eclipses what Truex did
tonight was Billy Arnold way back in 1930, when he led all but the first
two laps, leading 99% of the race during the harsh era of the Great
Depression.

In other words, to put what Martin Truex, Jr did tonight in proper
perspective, one has to look at the mind-boggling achievements in other
sports, such as Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game in 1962 (and averaging
50 PPG that entire season), Babe Ruth outhomering EVERY MLB team one
year, the Chicago Bears trouncing the Washington Redskins 73-0 in the
1940 NFL Championship Game, Jack Nicklaus beating Arnold Palmer and Gary
Player by NINE shots on the weekend in the 1965 Masters (all three them
were tied for the lead after two rounds), Secretariat's unimaginable
31-length romp in the 1973 Belmont Stakes when he became horse racing's
first Triple Crown winner since 1948, and Tiger Woods' demolitions of
the fields in the 1997 Masters, 2000 U.S. Open, and 2000 British Open,
three major championships he won by a combined 35 strokes (12 in the '97
Masters, 15 in the 200 U.S. Open, and 8 in the 2000 British Open). These
mind-blowing achievements what the unthinkable performance by Martin
Truex, Jr. in winning the 57th Coca-Cola 600 would best be compared to,
rather than anything that has occurred in any of NASCAR's biggest events
in the past, going all the way back to NASCAR's first 500 mile race in
1950.

I am once again left to wonder if ford is going to get it together this
year. They have only won 2 races and the all star race using a different
aero package and one of those was a plate race, and both with the same
driver and team. I feel like Toyota is really laying the money out
compared to chevy and ford. And no i don't mean to NASCAR buying the
races, but towards research and development stuff.

Don't look now guys. As Toyota continues to score wins as frequent as
they have been this year, unless something changes for the final 2/3
season, they are a shoe-in for ending Chevrolet manufacturer
championship streak. They are starting to gain a big lead with 31 points
ahead of Chevy after this race!

@396 I see Joey Logano, Kyle Larson and possibly Austin Dillon winning
before the Chase starts. I can only see Dale Earnhardt Jr (Daytona) and
AJ (Sonoma/The Glen) at those respective tracks for their best shot,
otherwise I don't see it happening this year.

Also to note, Tony Stewart is now only 26 points behind 30th place David
Ragan in the standings. If he were to get a surprising win, he's really
not that far off. Just a heads up.

Wanted to respond to this earlier, but there was other stuff happening
in the race...

"You know what Junior needs?

Darian Grubb"

In retrospect, I think Grubb was quite considerably not great in his
last three years with Hamlin and Edwards (2013-2015, which coincides
with the Gen 6 - though he and Edwards had a decent little run towards
the end of last year, but even that considered, Edwards with Dave Rogers
this year has looked a LOT better). So I think getting rid of Ives and
putting Grubb on there would be a mostly lateral move, just judging from
Grubb's recent history with this particular race car (and besides, I
also highly doubt it would happen anyway - if they were gonna make a
change, they'd probably most likely do Rodden to the #88 and Ives to the
#5 since the #5 obviously has plenty of issues - but I don't even see
that happening either - and personally, I think Hendrick getting Grubb
back this year is basically them setting up the post-Knaus #48 team, as
I still think Knaus isn't all that far away from taking the HMS
President/Director job since Rick is getting older now - and obviously
Grubb and Jimmie have history of working well/winning together, so I
think that's their line of thinking).

I don't think Ives is as good as Letarte either, but I do think he's
done an above average job. To be quite honest, I don't really understand
why people are lobbying for him to be fired. It seems to me like Jr's
having a pretty typical "Jr 2012-present" kind of year. They along with
the rest of Hendrick probably haven't gotten any BETTER than they were
in 2015 and 2014 (as opposed to JGR/Toyota who did and is making
everyone else look worse than they are), but in 13 races now Jr still
has three 2nd place finishes, a 5th, an 8th, and then got caught up in
crashes at Daytona, Dover, and Talladega where they probably would have
gotten (or at least strongly contended for) top tens too.

People are acting like he's been winning 5-6 races a year for the past
few years up until now (or up until Ives became his crew chief), but in
reality he seems to be on pace to having another one of his solid
Rudd/Labonte style one or two win seasons (with a bunch of top tens)
that he's been having for the past handful of years now (sans 2014 where
he won four, but even then he was gift-wrapped that first Pocono win
that year). That's just the type of driver Jr is at this stage of his
career. So although I do agree that they aren't as fast, I don't think
it's by much. Seems like a lot of overreacting, especially only 13 races
into the season when he really hasn't been THAT bad I don't think.

@webmaster: lap leader breakdown has Jimmie Johnson listed as the leader
of laps 167-298 (should be Truex).

Quite the historical day, with a rookie winning the 100th Indy 500 on
fuel mileage and Martin Truex pulling off the most dominant performance
in NASCAR history, perhaps one of the most dominant performances in auto
racing history. Couldn't have happened to a better guy, either,
considering all the tough luck he's had to deal with throughout his career.

410- Yes, you're probably right in that I'm just used to how good he was
with Letarte and it is a step back. But it gets tiring that every single
week he's starting in the back because Ives can't set up a car and
having to work his way to the front during the race, and any progress he
makes is negated by mistakes in the pits. But you're right. It could be
worse. The Lance McGrew years are still very fresh in my memory.

That 78 car was just extraordinary. Races like that only come along very
rarely and we just sit back in awe. The race itself sucked but history
was made. That record will stand for eternity.

I concur, there's only one race a year long enough to even challenge
this record and NASCAR races are usually so competitive now that it is
almost impossible to dominate the 600 like this. I think this record
will likely stand for decades.

Which record, RaceFanX? The 392 laps led or the 160.655 MPH average for
this race, which also smashes the old record set by Kasey Kahne in 2012
by 5 MPH. Like I stated in post #388, the best way to look at how
dominant Truex was in this race is to compare it to some of the other
record-smashing achievements in other sports (Wilt's 100-point game,
Secretariat at the '73 Belmont, Tiger's 12 and 15 shot wins in major
championships, etc.). But beating the old record by 5 MPH is tantamount
to Buddy Baker's breaking the Daytona 500 record by nearly 16 MPH in
1980, a speed record that stands to this day, or to when Arie Luyendyk
smashed the Indianapolis 500 race record by more than 15 MPH in 1990.
Usually when speed records fall, they fall incrementally, but Truex
completed this race in seven minutes less time than Kahne did in 2012,
which may not sound like much, but on the track with the speeds run
today, that difference is some 14 LAPS, and a 5 MPH increase of the
record. I don't think either record is likely to be touched.

Interestingly, Truex's last lap was not run at a much slower pace than
Alex Rossi's final lap was in his victorious Indianapolis 500, which was
run at 179.784 MPH.

wire to wire wins in NASCAR history.

Ned Jarrett winning by 22 laps, Spartanburg 1963, and by over 19 miles
at the 1965 Southern 500?

I mean congrats to MTjr on the impressive win, but the sport's history
runs a little deeper...

Burton's win at Loudon was totally a product of NASCAR's panic over the
recent deaths there that led to a 1-time use of restrictor plates and
made the race a complete no-passing zone.

"Domination" isn't how I would classify the mechanically-induced stupor
that this race was, since it was achieved only because of a piece of
equipment never before or again used there.

But I might classify it as the most boring NASCAR race I've ever had the
misfortune to see. Or else this one:

Of course, Scott B, there have been greater margins of victory than
Truex's in this race. Heck, in the 1969 World 600, LeeRoy Yarbrough won
by two laps and third place was 18 laps behind. But given the strength
of the competition, especially among the front runners, there's never
been anything like that in the history of the sport. Ned Jarrett and
David Pearson each had races at Darlington where their margin of victory
were in the teens of laps, but any time there's a margin of victory that
big, it had to do more with there's being the only good car left,
instead of how dominant their car was.

For instance, the battle in the 1965 Southern 500 was really going to be
between Fred Lorenzen ad Darel Dieringer, with Ned Jarrett a distant
third, but then both Lorenzen and Dieringer broke within a few laps of
each other, handing Jarrett that huge lead, and even he was having
problems, but was able to nurse his car to the finish. In the 1973 Rebel
500, which Pearson won by 13 laps, he got that margin because everyone
else that could have challenged him were involved in crashes. The fact
that Richard Childress finished fourth in that race, and Bobby Allison
was third, despite not even making it to the finish, should say it all.

And while Jeff Burton did lead every lap in the fall race at Loudon in
2000, even the commentators said that Truex's car was more dominant last
night than Burton's was in that race, and both Darrell Waltirp and Jeff
Gordon were in that race. Actually, I wonder if the #78 team has found
something, and much like what the Elliotts did in 1985, have discovered
a hidden advantage nobody else knows about, mainly because of being
based in Denver, away from the hub of NASCAR, like the Elliotts when
they dominated the sport while based in Dawsonville, GA. If that is so,
then what happened last night figures to be the first of numerous such
runs by Truex, and there may be little anyone can do to stop them,
because of how isolated they are from where everyone else is.

I understand how special it is to be this dominant and how rare it is to
see it, but just how rare is being overplayed, I think Brad K at
Richmond in 2014 before the chase was just as dominant and each race was
also just as enjoyable, in both races we all knew the ONLY way the 78
last night or the 2 in 2014 was going to lose was if they beat
themselves. We all hated on that race because Brad won and this race was
just fine because Truex won and he is a good story. Not hating, just
trying to be sensible here.

Don't look now, but Kurt Busch is second in the points! Doing pretty
good, I'd say.

Another driver to recognize is Chase Elliott, who is currently eighth in
points as a rookie!

On the other hand, one driver I'd say is further down than we would
expect is Joey Logano, who is ninth. I figured as strong as he has been
in the last two years, he'd be at least top-five.

That wasn't the ONLY way Truex wasn't going to win this race, DB1995.
There was always the chance of him making a routine pit stop and then
something happening to bring out the caution, trapping him a lap behind,
and potentially putting him in a deficit from which he couldn't recover.
But that, the #78 beating themselves, or a mechanical or tire failure
were probably the only things that were ever going to stop him because
of how strong his car was, and none of them did happen.

The surprising thing was that, as dominant as Truex was, that nobody
else gambled on staying out longer on the green flag pit stops to try to
catch a caution that may have put him behind and playing catch-up. But
when he stopped, everyone else did on the same lap, which was one reason
why nobody else was able to lead for more than a couple of laps at a
time. There were no risk-takers, like Trevor Bayne was at Texas, or like
Tony Stewart was at Kansas. That was a little surprising. It was almost
like everyone else conceded defeat halfway through the race. If
someone's that much better than everyone else, the only possible way to
defeat them is to take a chance, and nobody seemed willing to take a
risk on those green flag stops and try to catch a caution. Did they not
learn from what happened at Indy, when risk-taking and plot-twisting
cautions seemed to be the rule of the day?

NASCAR is looking into what went "wrong" in race. Since well you know,
one guy showed up and everyone else didn't so that means change something.

The sample size this year proves what is currently going on works. But
NASCAR fans were angry.

If they change anything.... lays on the feet of the fans.

At least it means the August race will probably have great weather.
Seems to be a pattern with Pocono, one race has perfect weather, the
other one has multiple practices and qualifying washed out, the race
delayed, and ends just past halfway.

So Brian Neudorff just gave his forecast, and it looks BLEAK.

He only calls for a 20% chance of even STARTING the race.

Even Talladega and Charlotte had 65% and 70% chances, respectively.

Let's hope we can defy the odds.

However, I have a feeling the race will be postponed before it even
starts, possibly even the day before.

Right now, it's been raining at the track for the last 30 minutes or so,
and will continue until 2:00 PM.

Sprint Cup practice was shortened due to rain, and XFINITY practice is
in a delay.

Situation looking bleak as it stands.

Worse news.

Brian Neudorff has now LOWERED his forecast to a mere 10% chance of
racing on Sunday. This is looking VERY bleak right now.

I really hope we can get it at least to halfway on Sunday.

Pocono also takes a long time to dry as it is so big of a track. Also,
