Does Cup have a provisional system anymore? I was under the impression that the non-charter cars that were 34th and slower in qualifying were ordered by points to determine who made the show and then redistributed into the lineup by qualifying speed. But Ware is the DNQ, so I guess it's just the fastest 4 regardless of position. 4. Kyle was alright but The collision left a nice blood mark on the front of the M&M's #18 Toyota and damaged some brake ducts and hoses in the Camry's nose. The bunny's last act on Earth was apparently to turn and look at Kyle's car before it hit it...running away probably would have been a better tactic. 15. It's not the desert, NASCAR's decision to race here in June just means that they visit during the dry season when a lot of the grass is dead. Watch some of the older 1990s Sonoma races when they ran here in May and things were usually much greener around the track. 20. These people look for every way possible why they shouldn't have won the race. Tony Stewart won fairly, he took a risk and it payed off. It's not like it was a fake debris caution. Meanwhile the points leader Juan Pablo Montoya hadn't pit yet and he got trapped in the back while Dixon was near the front allowing him to take a chunk out of Juan's lead. Nothing that happened there was done to help Rahal he just happened to benefit the most from the yellow. While I think the yellow today was questionable at best it was not as bad as that Mid-Ohio race. NASCAR has been throwing yellows like that for a decade now while that Mid-Ohio race was probably one audio bit away from being on the level of Spingate. 234. I so hope Tony can get that 50th win (which would tie him with Junior Johnson and Ned Jarrett on the all-time wins list) at the Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend. That's the one big crown that Smoke is missing on his resume, and it would be so appropriate to do it in his final attempt. 238. I knew Tony would be able to make it to the top 30 in points with no problem, but I had seriously thought we'd already seen the last win from him. What a surprise to see him back in victory lane, and considering this is his farewell tour, probably one of the most meaningful of his career. Those last few laps were really nail-biting-when Hamlin nudged Tony and got around him I figured it was over. I guess he was too busy watching his rear-view mirror heading towards the final corner because he totally botched that corner and gave Tony the opportunity to slam his way past (I don't think he INTENTIONALLY threw the race). Great for Tony to know he's almost certainly going to be in the Chase in his farewell season (barring him suffering an assload of terrible luck or getting injured again)... Some other observations on this race: -In the final laps, I couldn't help but think to myself "if Tony wins this, I just KNOW the tinfoil hat brigade will be out and about." Totally not shocked to see some comments saying that this race was scripted and I already imagine these people are picking Tony to win the title. I don't think it WAS, but the debris cautions were a little suspect (granted, at least there WAS actual debris on the track. I will say this, the TV cameras have actually started to show the debris on a regular basis this year-I bet it has something to do with all the cries from people-including myself-of phony cautions). No point in arguing with those types as nothing will convince them otherwise... -When was the last road-course race in which there were ZERO on-track spins? I think the most significant on-track incidents of the day were the three-wide collision between Edwards and Junior, and Stewart vs. Hamlin at the finish. Just felt kind of weird considering we usually see someone spin out every ten laps or so at the road courses events... -Clint Bowyer has had an absolutely humiliating and demoralizing season with the HScott team, and his catastrophic electrical fire serves as a pretty good summary of that. When was the last time we saw a car have a major electrical fire in the cockpit? I want to say Robby Gordon at Watkins Glen in '01 (where a TV camera box failed and caught fire), but that's probably not right... Onwards to Daytona...and NBC! 248. 1995z71 posted: 06.26.2016 - 8:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Tony Stewart finishes first while his replacement Clint Bowyer finishes last. 249. Yes Tony benefited big time from a questionable caution. But according to what I read on Reddit, NASCAR was already talking about debris on the track a few laps before Tony pitted. I call that a great call by Mike Bugarewicz having Tony pit just before an inevitable caution (Chad Johnston would have never made that call or if he did he would have had Tony pit again after the caution came out) But in any case I'll take a bogus caution helping Tony win this race considering most of his career bogus cautions have almost always hurt him. This was no fluke either. Tony has been running very good the past month. At Pocono he qualified well, ran well but got wrecked. At Michigan he qualified great, ran well & finished well. Now at Sonoma he qualified well, ran well, got shafted by his pit-crew but caught a break, led the last 20+ laps and won the race. And let's not forget he ran well last season at both road courses before issues out of his control hit him. And no Hamlin did not let Tony win this race. A proper (non-bumper cam) replay showed Hamlin smoking/locking up his front tires going into 11. Hamlin kind of did Tony dirty to take the lead (though I can't blame him since he was wheel hopping and didn't have full control) and was fully expecting Smoke to hit him back and mirror drove more than worrying about the final turn. But anyways. Congrats to Tony & the 14 team on a well deserved win. Glad to see Smoke's farewell tour hit a high note. 250. Also, I can't remember being this happy for a driver to win the race, other than Dale Jr. in the '14 500. I think for sure Hamlin didn't intentionally lose the race. 2 to go, he wheel hopped turn 7. 1 to go, he wheel hopped turn 7. 1 to go, he wheel hopped & locked up in turn 11. His car was going away. But good to see his reaction after the race. When Clint's car caught on fire on lap 6 or whatever it was, I felt so bad for him. This season has been awful for him and it seems like he just can't catch a break. This had to happen to him in one of the 6 races he probably has a legitimate shot to win this season. Just throwback Tony Stewart. Say whatever you want about him personally, but he's undeniably one of the best race car drivers EVER. Anyone who can win a Cup race at 45+ years old is extremely impressive (in my opinion), but to drive completely balls out like that and do it on a road course (just months after breaking his back) is just outstanding. The way everything in those last few laps played out is extremely fitting if this goes down as his last win (I'm guessing it probably will, although on second thought he looked great at Michigan too - maybe they're turning the corner a little bit here heading towards the second half of the year). This will almost surely be one of Stewart's most memorable wins I think. And needless to say, awesome race at Sonoma yet again. We NEED a couple more Cup road races. 254. Both wins on pit strategy calls, Dover was won with a two tire stop. This one was a well-timed four tire stop and an opportune caution to get him track position. * Tony Stewart records his 49th win, question is can he get to 50 before the year is out? * Apparently Jeff Gordon is going to be doing more TV work. He's going to work with kelly Ripa, replacing Michael Strahan. * Very much a thrilling win down to the end, you didn't know if Hamlin was going to catch him or not and when he did, you knew Tony Stewart was not going to give up with a shot to win it. It was just vintage Tony Stewart and it this win required just about every thing he had done over his career to win it. Car control, focus, aggression, and desire. * Clint Bowyer's frustrating season continues, this time with an electrical fire. Clint has to be unhappy with how things are going, it's almost a Kurt Busch in the 51 season all over again. 262.
