It's annoying as hell there; it's equally annoying here. It's the same as saying "FIRST!" on a Youtube comments section. What do you want...a medal for being the first to comment? "Vroom vroom vroom" Methinks someone actually liked the "drivers imitating engine noises" commercials Sunoco and Aaron's had earlier this year... 4. Braindead Zombie posted: 07.08.2016 - 7:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (4) Dammit Maverick, you beat me to it. Qualifying was cancelled due to rain earlier in the day and NASCAR wanted to give the teams more practice time because of the new track surface. I don't understand why they set the field by owners points though since they did get some practice time in. 5. Jolly Mean Giant posted: 07.08.2016 - 7:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) As for the race itself, this might actually be the first time I'm actually interested in seeing a Cup race at Kentucky. The previous 5 races here have largely been bland and forgettable for the most part. But the track has recently been repaved...AND they are using the new aero package they tested out at Michigan earlier this year. Could actually be Kentucky's best Cup race yet... 6. The first two times were at Richmond and Dover, both of which were also rained out. Also to note that Kevin Harvick also started on the pole during the All-Star race. That's four poles thanks to rain, yet he hasn't successfully "won" a pole in the 2016 season. 8. dennyfan11 posted: 07.08.2016 - 9:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Weather looks good for tomorrow, thankfully. 9. joey2448 posted: 07.08.2016 - 10:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "As for the race itself, this might actually be the first time I'm actually interested in seeing a Cup race at Kentucky. I'm predicting Saturday's race to be pretty wild, with the low-low downforce package and a newly-repaved surface that usually lends to cars being more on edge. Could be a wreckfest. 10. racefangurl posted: 07.09.2016 - 1:28 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) 4, NASCAR is just weird. Can be at least. 11. BluesTravelerFan posted: 07.09.2016 - 12:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Well I was originally going to go short track watching tonight but because of extreme heat will be staying away. Upside is I'll get to see this race! I'm not overly optimistic about it though, as a general rule a freshly paved track does NOT equal good racing, but I'm still curious to see how to the new package does. I think it will be a better test than Michigan, because Kentucky is a lot more of a typical track, whereas MIS is super wide and more unique. I'm picking Carl to win and Harvick to finish 2nd as is his eternal fate lol, and I expect Logano and Kyle to contend as well. And please 88 team, we need a good run SO bad. 13. Braindead Zombie posted: 07.09.2016 - 2:26 pm Rate this comment: (2) (5) Wonder who causes the wreck that takes out Jr tonight? 14. RaceFanX posted: 07.09.2016 - 5:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This is the first NASCAR Cup race at Kentucky after the track was repaved, changing the banking in turns 1 and 2 and turns 3 and 4 so they are no longer the same. The racing was all about clean air in the Truck and Xfinity races leading up to this one so it will be interesting to see if it's the same with the Cup cars. Braindead Zombie posted: 07.09.2016 - 6:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If the truck and Xfinity series races are anything to go by, the race should be a single-groove ride around the bottom where clean air is king. Hopefully that isn't the case. 17. RaceFanX posted: 07.09.2016 - 7:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @15 Kentucky Speedway originally had 14 degrees of banking in all four corners. When the track was repaved this year they increased the banking in turns 1 and 2 to 17 degrees but kept 3 and 4 the same. The switch in 1 and 2 also narrowed that portion of the track. 18. Smiff_2 posted: 07.09.2016 - 7:30 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) In my honest opinion, if they were going to add banking on one end and not the other, why go BIG, ya know? Throw these guys a REAL curveball...why not have 14 degrees on one end and close to 30 on the other? Either that, or they could've upped one end to 20 degrees, and dropped the other end down to 5. The best way to fix the racing at some of these intermediate tracks is to shake things up a bit...introduce some creative variables. Imagine a track where half is asphalt, and have is concrete....you could do some crazy shit if you put your mind to it lol. 19. Many of the drivers for some of the top teams in NASCAR are getting older, with most being around 40 years old. Jimmie Johnson: 40 Kevin Harvick: 40 Matt Kenseth: 44 Dale Earnhardt Jr.: 41 And several other drivers, such as Carl Edwards (36), Kasey Kahne (36) Kurt Busch (37), and Ryan Newman (38) are getting close. Before this year, the only drivers representing the "young guns" were Brad Keselowski (32), Kyle Busch (31) and Joey Logano (26). However, this year looks to be signs of a change. Chase Elliott (20) and Ryan Blaney (22) are making lots of noise with good runs, while other drivers who have been running a few years, like Kyle Larson (23) and Austin Dillon (26) are starting to run stronger. I think we'll soon see a situation similar to the early 80s or early 2000s in this respect. 26. Braindead Zombie posted: 07.09.2016 - 7:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Never mind, he isn't. Not sure what to expect here with the repave, but for what it's worth I thought Michigan was a great race. If it is a flop I think it'll be more the track than the package (and even then I'm not sure - I thought the Truck race was pretty damn good for being the first ever race on this surface - of course the NXS race sucked though from what I saw of it - so I don't know). 30. dennyfan11 posted: 07.09.2016 - 7:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Green! 31. Still had the normal repave issues (one groove, Goodyear bringing a 100+ lap left side tire) but the low-downforce 2.0 package and unique turns kept it interesting. 384. I'll start referring to 13th as a #DaleJr3rd and 11th as a #DaleJrWin since 11th is the maximum that can be gotten this season. Which, granted, beats the usual crash. But let's look at the season since the runner-up at Bristol: Richmond: Sixth with 60 or so to go. Dropped like it was 2009 (harbinger of things to come). 13th. Dega: Dead last. Wrecked twice. Kansas: 15th. Poor car all night. Dover: Running 8th, caught in a wreck (harbinger of things to come again) Charlotte: Ran 11th-15th, ill-timed BS caution leaves him having to take the wavearound. 14th. Pocono: 2nd. A top-10! But an agonizing one, naturally, that would've been a win if it weren't for his teammate. Still, maybe not the last top-10 of the season (yes it is) Michigan: Poor car, wrecked. Sonoma: This one had me livid unlike any others yet. 4th with less than 15 to go. Slammed into. 11th. The Curse was real by this point. Daytona: Poor car, wrecked. Kentucky: Eighth with four to go. Fuel milage. 13th. So it's been: Poor handling Wreck Poor handling Wreck Ill-timed caution 2nd Wreck Wreck (enough to continue The Curse( Wreck Fuel mileage I'm gonna guess the next 10: Wreck Pit road penalty Ill-timed caution Fuel mileage Wreck Blown engine Poor handling Wreck Blown tire Poor handling and finally, maybe something new like loose wheel 403. It wasn't the wreck that put her behind, she barely got damage from it, but it was a ill-timed caution while she was in the pits that screwed her. Placed her a lap down, and further more in the back with the lucky dog. If she pitted before the caution, she would likely have gotten a top 15 finish as she was in the same pit window as Kurt Busch, Smoke, Biffle, McMurray and others who had a few gallons of extra fuel from a different pit cycle that led to their top 10s finishes. Danica isn't aggressive enough as a driver, and that's why she gets 18-25 place finishes. If she becomes more aggressive I can see a Paul Menard ceiling as she's not as bad as people think when it comes to everything else (note last night's big wreck for example, she did a excellent job avoiding the crash; but if it happened a few years ago she would have crashed with them). @408. Ty Dillon suffered significant damage in that wreck, hit two cars and the wall, I have no idea why the radiator didn't burst to put it behind the wall, but the aerodynamics was gone. Not to mention it wasn't a ride with top-tier equipment. So I wouldn't put this race against him. Also Almirola was third with three laps to go. Did he run out of fuel with two to go? I know it wasn't the last lap because he is listed one lap down. 434. Jaranda posted: 07.10.2016 - 5:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Another thing that just caught my eye while looking at the stats. Danica10Racer posted: 07.10.2016 - 6:25 pm Rate this comment: (1) (3) @433 I think you are completely wrong about the aggressiveness. You want to see Danica's aggressiveness, then go look how she raced Bowyer to get the lucky dog. She pinched a future teammate on the bottom and utilized knowledge about the race package to get him aero loose and suck his car around. It was phenomenal racecraft from Danica, which shows that she is just as bit as good as any of the other drivers on the grid. I know it was a mostly boring race but that was the best piece of driving I saw all night. I do think the damage was a bigger factor than you give it credit for. Her lap times were way off after that wreck. Ty Dillon got way more damage from it but it punched a hole in the left front fender and knocked the tow out. The pitstop sequence was bad but I don't think she could get above 16th-17th after the fact. She's a top 15 driver in top 10 equipment. It seems like they have been way behind since last year. They have also seemed to have leaned on past results such as using last year's Talladega win car twice to disastrous results. I don't think that Greg Ives is a bad crew chief, its the fact that the rules package and tires have changed the setups are all different now than they were last year and they have taken a while to adjust because he lay of the land is different each season. I just think a lot of the decisions that team is making aren't panning out, they have to put their heads together figure it out and give Earnhardt a car he can contend with. 438. Ready for football season posted: 07.11.2016 - 4:31 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Part of it disappointingly enough is the driver in Dale Jr.'s case. He's not good at low-downforce racing compared to the more secure feeling of a high-downforce car, and he -- as per his comments last night -- doesn't have a good attitude about it either. For all the hell I catch on here from my special buddy, Braindead Zombie, it's funny that Jr's comments after the race were not terribly different, nor were they much less defeatist than my own. Finishing 13th is running "as good as we can," and if he misses the Chase he "won't lose any sleep over it." The problems as I see it with the 88 team are a poor crew chief in terms of car and setup and strategy, a driver who is more interested in enjoying life off the track than performing well on it (and he's about to get married, so I don't begrudge him that TBH) a very shaky pit crew that annually loses its best guys to JGR and a black cloud of bad luck whenever they back ass-first into a top-10 run. Put all that together and it's no secret as to why I'm not optimistic this weekend or any other. There's something wrong every race, and the attitudes don't have me convinced anything's going to change. 439. Evan posted: 07.11.2016 - 11:51 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Well true that as I have always said that NASCAR can tweak the rules, but they are always going to benefit some drivers and hurt some others and make them very ordinary. Tony Stewart, Harvick, the Busch brothers, Jimmie Johnson, Clint Bowyer, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle even in this late stage thrive with the lower down force rules because they can handle a car with low downfoorce. Junior leans toward the other rules package that was in place the two previous years he was winning which was very different as opposed to Tony Stewart who couldn't drive that rules package. Plus Junior is getting married this year, but the harder working style that Hendrick has as opposed to DEI's family run operation then was always something Junior has had to adjust to. 440. While I do hope NASCAR sticks with this package for the racing's sake, it is pretty clear that it doesn't help Jr. And I disagree that it's helped Jimmie, last year with the spoiler down from 8.0 to 6.0 inches he led his least amount of laps since 2005 and this year he has struggled mightily since his last win with less than 50 laps led and an average finish of 18.3 But getting back to Jr. yes, we miss Steve Letarte a lot. 441. I think its safe to say Jimmie has entered his "Jeff Gordon 2008-2015" phase where he'll win a few races a year and be a top ten driver, maybe contend for a few more championships but I don't know if he'll win anymore titles. I still think he'll surpass Gordon's 93 wins though. 444. Maverick11 posted: 07.11.2016 - 4:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Hendrick has obviously had a terrible year. This is a ballsy move, but swap Knaus and Ives. Jimmie and Chad haven't been super consistent in 2013 and they are leading less and less laps every year. I think a change of scenery would be great for that team. As for Jr., perhaps working with one of the greatest crew chiefs of all time would motivate and help turn him and the 88 team around. Hendrick needs to prepare for the future. Johnson is on the decline, and Elliott looks like the only bright spot in their future. This could totally fail, but was everyone else think about this? 445. I know I've been hard on him, but it is a fact that he has performed his best with Francis as his crew chief. Another option could be swap Ives and Gustafson. Ives worked great with Chase Elliott in the Xfinity series, and I don't think Gustafson is anywhere near as bad as some people think. 446. Just because a crew chief has success in the Xfinity series does not the mean they are set for good results higher up (see:Lance Mcgrew). I never thought his straight laced scientific by the book style would mend well with Jr. regardless. Jr. needs someone who he can have fun with and banter but also busr his butt when he needs it, whether it's obvious like Tony Sr. or more subtle and gentle like with Steve. Either way I don't see his current partnership ending well. On a different note, unfortunately it looks like there won't be any changes on the package for the chase, as I read on Jayski, though they did say we might see it again BEFORE the chase, just not during. 447. "I think Junior needs Darian Grubb" I've said it before, but I think Grubb seriously lost a step when the Gen 6 came out. Granted his driver (Hamlin) was injured in 2013 and JGR/Toyota as a whole didn't have much speed at all in 2014, but I thought he was fairly pedestrian last year with Edwards even though JGR had amazing speed. He probably would be a good fit for Dale Jr personality wise, but if your goal is to get the #88 back up to speed again I'd be really wary about Grubb given his recent history with this particular race car. He's probably better off staying in R/D and trying to help right the ship with their lack of understanding about this low down force package (which I think has pretty glaringly been the problem at Hendrick this year, not the crew chiefs - or, at least it's been for Johnson/Earnhardt Jr/Kahne - ironically I think Chase Elliott's inexperience has essentially been an advantage when it comes to this package this year as he really doesn't know anything different, unlike the veteran guys - same could probably be said about Blaney at Wood Brothers/Penske too, where up until maybe the last month or so I think the #2 and #22 kind of struggled to fully figure the package out). 451. dennyfan11 posted: 07.12.2016 - 10:54 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Does anyone else think Hendrick Motorsports might be done? If they had replaced Mears with Jr. instead of Kyle, there wouldn't be a place for Keselowski to come up in 2010 (#5-Busch, #24-Gordon, #48-Johnson, #88-Earnhardt). The only way that seat stays open is if they don't sign Jr. However, Jr. was the one who "discovered" Keselowski, so the chances are there would be no Brad at HMS if it wasn't for Jr. Had Jr. never left DEI, who knows where they would be right now, but chances are they would have at least Earnhardt, Truex and Keselowski driving for them, probably with a 4th car driven by Regan Smith, Aric Almirola or Paul Menard. 458. Gibbs has Matt Tifft, Daniel Suárez, Erik Jones, Christopher Bell, William Byron and Cody Coughlin. Stewart-Haas has Cole Custer and Nick Drake. Furniture Row doesn't have anyone, but their alliance with Gibbs will probably give them at least one of the Gibbs prospects. Penske has Daniel Hemric and Tyler Reddick. Childress has Brandon Jones and Ben Kennedy, and one of their satellite teams, GMS Racing, has Spencer Gallagher, Grant Enfinger and Kaz Grala. Ganassi has Brennan Poole. Roush has Bubba Wallace & Ryan Reed. The only HMS/JRM drivers that aren't Cup drivers or affiliated with SHR that they have are Elliott Sadler, Justin Allgaier, Alex Bowman, Josh Berry and Kenny Habul (though Regan Smith could be an answer for them at some point). Bowman is 23 and Berry is 25, but they can't seem to find sponsorship. Sadler is 41 and Allgaier is 30, not exactly the best ages for top prospects. Kenny Habul has money and sponsorship, but is 43 and will never have a full-time ride in any series (and probably will never run a race without spinning at least once). Historically, HMS has not built through free agency. Of their 11 NSCS championships, only 1 (Terry Labonte in 1996) didn't begin their career with Hendrick. The average age of their drivers is 35, and not counting Chase, it's 40. They need to start looking at some young drivers on other teams, whether a driver performing well for a lower-level team in Cup (Kyle Larson, Landon Cassill, Trevor Bayne, Ricky Stenhouse, Matt DiBenedetto) or an Xfinity/Truck driver who doesn't have a place on his current Cup team (William Byron comes to mind, as he has JRM ties). I also think they need to do something about Kasey Kahne now. I really think Kyle Larson would be a good fit for this ride, unless Kasey starts performing. But I feel like we already know who Kasey is. He'll finish 14th-15th in points with 1-2 wins, 7-8 top 5s and 13 or so top 10s in a good year with about 300-400 laps led and 2-3 poles. His averages at HMS are 12th in points, 1 win, 7 top 5s, 14 top 10s, 1 pole and 311 laps led. Hendrick should've helped him step up, but his averages have stayed essentially the same as the rest of his career, with small differences. 460. The Trump endorsement in particular will probably turn off some companies that don't want a backlash like what Chick-fil-A received, although I think Eddie Gossage does more damage to NASCAR's image than Brian France could even dream of doing. It's a manner of promotion I despise and it's a manner of promotion that I think inspired some of the gimmickry that started to creep into NASCAR proper. I think TMS has been one of the most ineptly run tracks in recent history starting from the very beginning when water seeped out from underneath the track surface in the NASCAR event and they picked the wrong winner in the first IRL event (yes, it was a new track, but none of the other new cookie-cutters had quite these issues.) Unlike most other track promoters, Gossage openly tries to interfere with how series should be run. While I can understand him demanding IndyCar not race in Austin (which I personally see as no big loss since I don't think that's a very great track), I couldn't understand when he attempted to insist that the merged IndyCar remain at only 20% road/street courses, especially when the road courses sell and the ovals don't, and I don't think very many people other than him were nostalgic of the early IRL style of racing, as composed to people who were nostalgic for the merged CART which had half or slightly more road courses (I would agree with Gossage that there are not enough ovals now, but I can't think of how to promote them...he's losing crowds just as much as everybody else is, so I'm not sure HE knows how to promote them.) It's not his business to try to dictate how a series runs. NASCAR does not allow him the same kind of power, but due to the Ferko lawsuit he was still responsible for Rockingham losing its race date and the Southern 500 losing its chase date after it was moved into the chase. The gimmickry of his pre-race ceremonies is unmatched by anyone (even Wheeler in the past.) The 2011 mid-race intermission in the IndyCar doubleheader with drivers swinging tires to select their starting positions is one of the most irritating things I've seen in a race in my life, and it proved (among with several other things he did - scheduling the 2001 CART race (although I do lay that more on CART's feet for not properly testing there), starting a crashed car on the front row of that doubleheader race which could have turned disastrous, and even most recently when that logo potentially could have chopped Newgarden's head off if that crash had happened slightly differently...) that he does not care about safety, at least when it interferes with the show. I believe he has defended pack racing in IndyCar even after Dan Wheldon's death (admittedly because the fans in Texas expected it and wanted it and he did lose crowds as a result, but losing crowds is better than losing drivers.) Then there is his willingness to pander to anyone by taking sponsorships from the NRA and Duck Dynasty and allowing for events such as Phil Robertson, who is not a minister, giving an invocation and using it as a political pulpit (even though the crowd there will largely agree with his political views, surely a religious conservative would be offended by somebody who isn't a minister doing an invocation, right?) Now this isn't really a political thing I am saying here, because I would be similarly disgusted if Planned Parenthood or the ACLU or PETA or whatever sponsored a race with the traditional pre-race ceremonies being hijacked to pander to people, and I am disgusted by Dover's Autism Speaks sponsorship as well (considering that organization believes or at least recently believed that autism is something that can be 'cured' rather than just a different neurological wiring and that vaccines cause autism, which have both been disproven...) It is in this sense that I mean that Gossage is doing more harm for NASCAR's image than France could dream of, because if NASCAR wants anybody to watch their races who isn't a social conservative, somebody will just share a video of Robertson giving that horrific invocation at Texas, potential younger fans will smugly go "Ew" and swear off NASCAR altogether (and I certainly think genuine religious conservatives would probably not be fond of Robertson's image either, because he is vain when Christianity preaches humility.) In the early '90s it may have worked when NASCAR fans only had one political demographic generally, but that has markedly changed (in 2012, NASCAR fans surprisingly went for Obama over Romney in some polls, which shocked me.) I think Gossage's willingness to pander to a redneck fan base that largely no longer exists (since the traditionalist fans would have been long gone with the chase and the other recent garbage) does help alienate people from NASCAR. Don't get me wrong - sponsorships by liberal organizations would alienate NASCAR fans even more and I have no doubt of that, but honestly NASCAR should not be entering politics and alienating potential fans as a result. There is nothing they can really do about Gossage since he runs a private track that is owned by ISC's rival SMI, but I don't think I'm wrong to say he hurts NASCAR's image. But my much bigger issue with him is his disregard for safety in favor of "the show". Humpy Wheeler was bad enough, but a Wheeler wannabe is even worse. 480. Gossage puts on the best show of any racetrack I've been to, and I don't believe he does it at the expense of safety. TMS has SAFER barriers all over the track, as they have for a long time, and their catch fence is state-of-the-art. The track is also very clean, and you can see almost the whole racetrack from virtually every seat. I don't care who sponsors the race. I thought the NRA fit well as a sponsor, and if they were willing to fork over the money, so be it. Duck Commander was probably the best sponsor, as the Robertsons were interacting with fans at the track. In the spring 2014 race, we waited for hours for the track to dry and they showed Duck Dynasty on the big screen. You make such a big deal out of Phil Robertson saying the prayer, but Joe Gibbs and others who aren't pastors have said the prayers before, too. Personally, I don't care who says the prayer. I'd much rather have someone like Phil Robertson give the prayer instead of some of the pastors I've heard in churches. Robertson isn't at all vain. Also, all he did was say he wants a "Jesus man" in the White House. Well, given that he was saying a Christian prayer, I don't think that's out of bounds at all. I think most, if not all, Christians would want that. Even if Gossage was TERRIBLE for NASCAR's image, which I don't believe he is, there's no way he could do more harm as an owner of a track that hosts 5% of the races than Brian France, who is in charge of everything each week and has been running off traditional fans since 2004 while failing to attract new ones. In 2012, the last year that NASCAR posted attendance numbers, Texas drew the 1st and 3rd-largest crowds of the season. The racing wasn't particularly good that year, but people came out for the pre-race entertainment, the nice facilities, and the fast cars. They also drew the 2nd-largest IndyCar crowd in 2012, the last year we have data, behind the Indy 500. That's right, a bigger crowd than any road course. 484. Moving on: I am getting so fed up with ESPN. While there are still a few personalities I like (SVP, for example), I have pretty much switched to watching Fox Sports. All they ever report on is LeBron, Steph Curry & the Warriors, soccer, the NFL and women's college sports. Last night exemplified that, as LeBron & the Cavs won practically every award. Then Breanna Stewart got up there & said that "it isn't fair that women's sports aren't as popular as men's, or covered by the media (other than ESPN, she noted) as much." Well, guess what? That's cause fewer people watch them. Most networks don't care to broadcast or talk about sports that don't have as large a fan base, but ESPN continues to shove it down our throats. No thanks. If you look at statistics, the most popular sports (percentage-wise) are pro football (33%), followed by baseball (15%), men's college football (10%), auto racing (6%), men's pro basketball & ice hockey (5%), men's soccer & men's college basketball (4%), men's golf & boxing (3%), swimming & track & field (2%), horse racing, women's soccer, women's college basketball, women's pro basketball & men's tennis (1%), and finally bowling, women's tennis & women's golf, at under 1%. I know people say they promote what sports they broadcast (or they should), but it's not proportional either. I swear, it could be game 7 of the world series and David Ortiz could hit a walk off grand slam, but SportsCenter would lead with "look what LeBron had for lunch today" and "Steph Curry's daughter." The day of the Daytona 500, they covered it for like 5 minutes. Sorry, rant over, just had to get that out there. My friends talk about basketball much more and I think young people do in general (LeBron James's decision show beat the vast majority of contemporary races at the time in the ratings...I know that.) I would have expected NBA matching or ahead of MLB honestly. The rest seems about right though... Well, ESPN covers poker (seems like this would make more sense on a more generic entertainment channel like USA or TNT or something), the National Spelling Bee (probably should be on PBS), and ESPN2 used to cover fly fishing, Scrabble, and even Magic: the Gathering. Their idea of what a sport is is more expansive than most people's in reality, and there are probably better networks for all those sorts of things, but I guess there isn't really an audience for any intellectual/gaming competition in this country (in Asia there is, but in the US there is not), so I'm not really sure what ESPN's mission is with all this. I've got to say I'm really surprised racing is more popular than basketball and that basketball isn't even more popular than hockey. Seems to go against my real-world experience. As for them not televising the ESPY Auto Racing award winner, well, they don't care about racing. They've proven that by how they've let everything go except 5 IndyCar races a year (even NHRA which was a mainstay for them.) It honestly doesn't bother me since that's not an awards show particularly known for its integrity and I know what to expect from them. I am more bothered by the people whining about Busch winning it. Obviously they still have a NASCAR bias even after losing it (having separate pages on their website for NASCAR and all other racing series) so unless the NASCAR champion had a weak season NASCAR will inevitably get it. I couldn't believe people in the Racer comments were acting like Busch was less deserving than Rossi and Enders-Stevens. Even though I don't like NASCAR's recent direction, I think it way outstrips NHRA in prestige and even though F1 outstrips NASCAR in prestige, I feel Rossi was hyped in Europe largely because he was an American in Europe doing pretty well but not extraordinary (just like Daly, and just like Scott Speed a decade ago, which is why I had a bias against all of them, although Rossi and Daly are both starting to break that for me this season.) However, if IndyCar deserved a 2nd choice besides Dixon, Pagenaud, Power, Montoya, Rahal, or Newgarden would have made more sense. It's just a silly award and I know that, but I think choosing Rossi or Enders-Stevens over Busch is silly... Hamilton or Dixon? Yeah, they probably would have been more deserving. 494. JSPorts posted: 07.14.2016 - 7:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sean, when I first saw those stats I was surprised too. However, think about it: the reason people think basketball is so popular is because ESPN covers it so much more than any other sport by a mile. But think about the "silent majority", people who like auto racing, baseball, hockey, or golf, sports like that. As for the ESPY, I think there is a NASCAR bias at ESPN, at least when it comes to motorsports (certainly not compared to any other sport, especially my favorite sport, spelling). In the 24 years the ESPY for best driver has been awarded, 16 times it has gone to a NASCAR driver, including the past 2 years. Formula One drivers have won 3 times, as have CART drivers, and IndyCar Series drivers have won it twice (Ryan Hunter-Reay both times, back-to-back in 2013 and 2014). However, that means 2 of the past 4 have been won by open wheel drivers, so maybe the stock car bias isn't as great as it once was (the first one was won by an open wheel driver, as were 4 of the first 5 and 6 of the first 10. The stock car bias really started when NASCAR drivers won 13/15 from 1998-2012). BluesTravelerFan, if I were Dale Jr., I would retire from racing following the expiration of my contract at the end of the 2017 season, and focus on my family and race team. I would move JRM to the Cup Series to be a satellite team of Hendrick, as SHR is now. However, he may choose to do any number of different things, and I can't blame him for whatever he does. It takes a lot of courage for an athlete in any sport to step out due to a concussion. Other drivers, and athletes in general, should learn from Jr.'s example. 497. It was very common in racing and other sports for athletes to not miss any time when dealing with a concussion. They didn't think it was that big of a deal. On top of that drivers in NASCAR had to deal with the stigma of looking "weak" for missing races, which is why it was such a big deal when Dale got out of the car back in 2012. Sean posted: 07.14.2016 - 8:20 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) I'm also Asperger's (well now I guess high functioning autism since Asperger's have been taken off the book) and I just read Steve Silberman's excellent book "NeuroTribes" on autism history from last year and he makes it very clear that Andrew Wakefield was one lone wolf whose study wasn't really accredited and indeed several of the co-authors of his paper had conflicts of interest that were best supported by Wakefield's false claims that vaccines caused autism. I would not call it one of the ten most important issues of our time, but the reason for the autism epidemic is because Leo Kanner and Hans Asperger who both discovered autism at about the same time had extremely different conceptions of what it entailed. Kanner believed that autism existed only in childhood, only generally counted the extreme cases (people who were at the level of institutionalization), and blamed "refrigerator mothers" for smothering their children to cause their children's autism. Kanner would have rejected most people who were developing normal intellectually despite social deficiencies. Asperger acknowledged that autism had degrees of severity, that it exists from birth and lasts for the entire life, but that people can improve or get worse (become higher or lower functioning) at different points in their lives, which agrees with the modern conception. Asperger's research in the '40s was suppressed because he was in Austria leading up to World War II and apparently was forced to sign an oath to Hitler in order to protect him and his patients from getting killed, and the Nazi connections were enough to cause people in the western world to be leery of investigating his research. Asperger's paper was not even translated into English until the '80s by Lorna Wing, who finally created the autism spectrum, the PDD-NOS, and the Asperger's diagnosis in the '80s and '90s. Now most of Kanner's ideas that do not match Asperger's have been largely discredited and therefore a lot more people are getting diagnoses. More adults are getting diagnosed, more poor people and minorities are getting diagnosed (generally the only patients Kanner received were rich because most people could not really afford psychiatrists in the '40s), and more people with less severe symptoms who are able to somewhat function in life are getting diagnosed. That is the reason for the epidemic. The definition expanded to include more people, consistent with Asperger's views and in opposition to Kanner's. Remember "Rain Man"? The Hoffman character was considered high functioning autistic, but he would likely not be today (actually the terms high functioning and low functioning aren't being used as much anymore.) That alone reflects the change that has taken place. It has nothing to do with vaccines. And that's why Autism Speaks's Dover sponsorship pissed me off so much (even though I never mentioned it here before this) because it was only a year or two ago (long after that sponsorship began) where they finally acknowledged vaccines do not cause autism. Also, while I have no doubt that people in the United States are getting more obese, I also find it interesting that almost nobody has reported that part of this certainly results in the definitions for overweight and obese being changed in 1998. Prior to the summer of 1998, a BMI of 27 was overweight and a BMI of 32 was obese, and in 1998, these were reduced to 25 and 30. I don't think this reflects all the gains in the obesity epidemic, but I bet it was a contributing factor. BMI is a shabby way of measuring people's actual health anyway, since skinny fat people like me are not healthy but come out as being so because of BMI's flaws, but I thought that was also worth mentioning in the same vein even though it's kind of a random segue... 514. NASCAR needs to be doing a better job of catching them when they occur because I do not believe anybody should be allowed to race with a current concussion... Excited for Bowman though, but I kind of wish Allgaier had finally gotten a major Cup shot. I do think Bowman has more upside than Allgaier at this point though, as Bowman may not have peaked while Allgaier almost certainly has. 515. I see a lot of similarities between him and Dale Jr. Both of their fathers raced, and I think that Chase, much like Junior, will always be measured up to his father no matter how successful he becomes. In addition, Chase will have Jeff Gordon's accomplishments that he'll have to live up to or else he's a failure in the eyes of, um, some fans. Both drivers are also hugely popular, and I think its safe to say that once Junior is out of the picture, Chase will be the one winning MPD every year (he's already got a big chunk of Rainbow Nation). Also, their driving styles and personalities seem similar, Chase seems to be a very humble, respectful person and a clean driver, much like Dale Jr. Obviously nobody will be able to completely fill the void left by Junior, but I can't wait to see what Chase can do. 516. And I do realize that much of the report incidence numbers have to do with changing economics, and I agree with that, I just get really emotional when I think about it though. It's bad enough to know I deal with it, but then to think there are so many others suffering with(not to mention more common mental problems like depression which I also struggle with)it makes it much worse. But anyhow, that's life.. I will be pulling for Bowman in this race, and I actually think if he avoids incident he can easily finish in the top 15. 517. His home track, and he didn't exactly have the best ending there last year. Indianapolis, along with Kentucky, are the only two races I could ever see him coming back for, and if Junior has to sit out at Indy, I think Gordon should at least be offered the ride. Regarding the autism discussion, I have Tourette Syndrome which isn't autism but is often confused as such. I also have OCD and ADHD. 518. Then there's the guys I've rooted for on Jr.'s team for a long time, Brad K., Cassill, Smith, Wise. Brad would probably be the top one of those. Then there's Joey & Blaney who I'd consider long shots. I'd probably be on-board with Keselowski but I'm not real happy with some of his life decisions outside of racing. However, the one that would blow everyone out of the water would be Chris Buescher if he can get himself in a quality ride. He grew up/lives less than an hour away from me, and is the first full-time driver from the DFW metroplex that I can remember. My family had always been big fans of the Labontes, who are also from Texas (especially Terry). Ricky Rudd as well, don't know quite why. I was really hoping James & Chris would both make it to Cup and be kinda like Terry & Bobby. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem likely for James, but if RFR can get their program turned around, Chris has a shot at a good career. Maybe can be a 4th team, but with lack of sponsorship, most likely would replace Biffle. Sean--thank you for posting that. People have so many bad misconceptions about the causes of certain disorders, and about many disorders themselves. As an aspiring doctor, I am fascinated by the human brain and how it works. Lastly, I wish Alex the best this week. Obviously, it sucks for him to have to drive under these circumstances. He needs to take care of the car, and as Jeff Burton said on NASCAR America today, be Alex Bowman. Don't try to be Dale Jr. If that gets you an 8th place, great, but if it gets you a 23rd, that's ok too. It's hard to come in without any consistency and on short notice and run a one-off like this. 523. dennyfan11 posted: 07.14.2016 - 9:19 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) I also have Asperger's. 524. dennyfan11 posted: 07.14.2016 - 9:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) High-functioning. 525. Obviously his brain is to the point that it is weakened. Hopefully there is no permanent damage already, although there most likely is. I'm afraid if he takes too many more brain rattlers, he'll be the next Benoit. Oh, and about his potential replacement if he isn't cleared before Indy..... 531. He isn't 2002 "I'll race with a concussion because I'm still better than most everyone else" Dale Jr. anymore. Even if he does have permanent brain damage, I think the fact that he took himself away from the race this weekend proves that he's smart enough now to get proper help should he ever need it. 532. racefangurl posted: 07.15.2016 - 7:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Jr. should finish his contract, then have somebody replace him. And although I have been quite vocal in my reservations about him professionally, I don't want to see him lose his quality of life or worse. He needs to retire for his own personal good. 534. As someone who has been a Dale Jr fan since I started watching NASCAR nearly ten years ago, its hard to admit this, but I think you're right. As a fan, I want him to keep racing for years to come, but as a human being, I think after his contract at Hendrick is finished (after 2017) he should stop racing at least full-time. Then he can focus on JRM and more importantly, his new family. 535. racefangurl posted: 07.15.2016 - 11:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Maybe he could race Xfinity after his contract runs out.
