Bowman in 20th, hoping he can just get a solid top 20, maybe even top ten finish. Get well soon Dale. Oh yeah and a great qualifying run for DiBurrito in 16th! 3. They're kind of on the border between tier 2 (decent, but not great) and Tier 3 (midpack). They're basically a top-15 team so far this year. JMO. And who is Eddie MacDonald? The Chase is also on my mind. Which of the bubble drivers do you think will make it in and how (points race in or win)? 5. Stewart14rocks posted: 07.15.2016 - 8:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Which bubble drivers will make the chase Ryan Newman-he will do it off pure consistency. He's done it the past 2 years and a strong chance of doing the same in 2016. But like last year wont make it far into the chase. Austin Dillon-He's had an outbreak season and will make it on consistency. I don't really see Dillon winning a race anytime this season, just hasn't been on contention for one. He'll likely be eliminated early also in the chase. Chase Elliott- Unless his season goes to shit he's making the chase. While being the strongest HMS car this season surprisingly. I do think he'll win before the chase and make it in. But even if he doesn't win he'll would have racked up enough points to make the chase. Kyle Larson- Larson seems to been strong lately with a lot of top 5 runs. If he continues this trend it will at some point put him in victory lane. He doesn't have a good chance on relying on consistency unless the other bubble drivers seasons go ot shit. Kasey Kahne-Hear is an example of a driver who's season went to shit (remember Watkins glen and Pocono last year). But I think this year will be his year with him making the chase. He'll simply make it in on consistency. Drivers who will miss the chase: Dale Earnhardt, Jr.- He wont make the chase due to missing new Hampshire and possibly more races. this will put him in a shitty points situation. Which he hasn't been very strong this season and hasn't contented for a win really at all this season. But eh he always seems to come outta nowhere and win to me so maybe that'll happen. Jamie Mcmurray-Just wont simply have enough speed to make the chase. Trevor Bayne-Although this will piss some fans off but I don't see bayne making the chase. The team seems to be good but just not good enough to make the chase. This will be another year of roush not having a single entry in the chase. CHASE CHANCES FOR DRIVERS NOT MENTIONED Ryan Blaney 4/10 A.J Allmendinger 5/10 Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. 3/10 Greg Biffle 3/10 Paul Menard 2/10 Danica Patrick 1/10 Aric Almirola 2/10 Clint Bowyer 1/10 7. Braindead Zombie posted: 07.15.2016 - 8:59 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Here's who I think will make the chase (of people who haven't won yet): Chase Elliott Kyle Larson Austin Dillon Ryan Newman Trevor Bayne At least one of Elliott or Larson will win their way in. Chase could win virtually anywhere, maybe except for Watkins Glen. I could easily see him taking Pocono or Michigan, two tracks where he ran up front in the first race this year. Larson could win at Bristol, that's one of his best tracks. The other three guys get in on consistency. If Dale Jr only has to miss New Hampshire though, he could still have a chance, so if he makes it, bump Bayne out. 8. Mile501 posted: 07.15.2016 - 9:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) #3 - I was just about to say the same thing. I hope the BK Racing teams can both have a good weekend! They were impressive in first practice as well (both inside the top-20). #6 - Earnhardt Jr. does have four 2nd-place finishes this year. It's not like he's been awful. Every single race except July Daytona, he has either had a crash-related DNF or he has finished in the top-15. 9. RaceFanX posted: 07.15.2016 - 9:10 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) Eddie MacDonald- Great veteran northeastern racer who has made his name in the smaller series like ACT and Busch North (now K&N East). In: Ryan Newman: will be the highest-finishing non-winner in the regular season, and will make the Chase on consistency. Kyle Larson: will win 1-2 races and make the Chase, however he would make it on points anyways. Chase Elliott: will win 1-3 races and make the Chase, but would've also made it on points alone. Dale Earnhardt, Jr.: if he misses 1 race, he's in. Even if he misses 2, he's probably still in. From there, it gets a little more difficult to predict. But bad luck can't follow him all season, right? Jamie McMurray: will grab the last Chase spot in a close battle with Kahne & Dillon Out: Kasey Kahne: will barely miss the Chase after making a run at it. Austin Dillon: his recent inconsistency/mediocrity will continue, and he will fall out of the Chase at Richmond, being passed by Jamie McMurray. Ryan Blaney: he's bound to have a string of rookie problems, so his luck will run out, he'll miss the Chase. Trevor Bayne: he's going to slide backwards from here on out. Being objective, obviously some of these I hope aren't true. Just how I think things will turn out. 13. Nathan8848 posted: 07.15.2016 - 11:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Looks like Hendrick found some speed this week. 14. Braindead Zombie posted: 07.15.2016 - 11:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Don't think Junior will make the chase if he misses anymore than one race, unless he gets a win (his best chances will be Pocono (assuming he's back by then) and the two short tracks.) Also I didn't even think about Dinger. Basically if he wins at The Glen, he's in, if he doesn't, he's out. 15. Maverick11 posted: 07.15.2016 - 11:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) In Chase Elliott- Barring a major collapse, he has a huge lead and consistently grabs great finishes, no brainer. Austin Dillon- Although slumping since the start of the season, he'll barely hang on to one of the final spots. Ryan Newman- Consistent week in and week out, and should have enough of a cushion to make it on points. Kasey Kahne- Kahne has getting better after a dismal start so I think he'll make it into the Chase. Kyle Larson- No, Larson will not win (Everyone has been expecting him to for nearly two years, has it happened?) but he will barely make it on points. Out Trevor Bayne- As an organization, Roush is down and Bayne has gotten lucky this season (i.e. Kentucky), so the law of averages will probably keep him out of the Chase on points. Dale Earnhardt, Jr.- If he misses 2 races, he could be 10 points back or worse, and with the speed the 88 has shown, they might not make it back to the top 16. Ryan Blaney- Has shown flashes, but overall inconsistency will keep him out. Jamie McMurray- Hate to say it, but he's shown absolutely no speed all year. Relying on 17th place finishes will not let them skate by until Richmond. 16. Braindead Zombie posted: 07.16.2016 - 12:06 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think Jr can afford to miss one race, but if he has to miss more than one he'll need to win to get in. Honestly, I feel I haven't watched NASCAR long enough to predict stuff, but I feel like Larson will win by the end of next year. I see Maverick's point; it'll probably be next year. But, he's getting more finishes towards the front. That should continue. His first win will probably be at a track like Martinsville or Dover. 19. NHMS this year drastically decreased the amount of tickets they were giving away for free this year. Despite the bad looking crowd ticket sales have actually been up. A small positive for the track but I still say if they want better attendance for the summer race they need to put up lights. The fans up here hate sitting in the 90 degree heat all afternoon. 46. that e-guy posted: 07.17.2016 - 1:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Hope Bowman can do well today. 47. Besides, as said numerous times, Hendrick REALLY does need to start looking for new, fresh talent considering 3 of their 4 drivers are approaching "retirement age" (and one of them has an uncertain future due to injuries). 224. racefangurl posted: 07.17.2016 - 4:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If there was a caution now, there's a contingent that would call it a Danican't Race caution. 225. Also, like I said, I bet the tinfoil hatters are already predicting NASCAR to gift-wrap the championship for Tony as a retirement present for him. If not for that wacky late-race chaos that NASCAR loves so much, he almost certainly would've eked out a top 10. Speaking as a virtual life-long Jeff Gordon fan...if Junior isn't cleared for Indy it will be REALLY weird to see him driving something other than the #24 (unlike some people, I highly, HIGHLY doubt Hendrick will do a number swap in that scenario). I won't mind too much if it's just the odd one-off or so he does in the future-considering how his race at Indy last year went, it would be nice to see him get one more shot at a good run there. Jeff ended his full-time career on a high note last year, and the only way he could possibly top that is if he were to win next week. But Jeff also has the distinction of being the only major driver in history to make all of his Cup starts consecutively. And all of them are in the #24. And he has an autobiography in the works, that's going to be published in the fall, which is supposed to chronicle his entire career (although it probably wouldn't be too difficult to include Indianapolis in it somewhere). However, let me end with this: I realize that Jeff never said that Homestead would be his last race. It was the NASCAR media and the race tracks that blew it up out of proportion. And Jeff himself is a team player, willing to step in for this kind of situation. I respect that. So if he does run next Sunday, I will still pull for him like always. 364. Kenseth & Logano's Kansas incident (also just a racing incident) happened 3 weeks before Kenseth wrecked Logano. He had had time to cool off, assess the situation and decided he would intentionally take Logano out of the Chase. Also, Kenseth's record isn't nearly as squeaky-clean as Gordon's was, though NASCAR has generally given them both the benefit of the doubt. I still think Gordon should've been suspended, but Kenseth's actions were much worse. 367. You don't try to move someone out of the way like that on a 1 1/2 mile track like Joey did. Then at Daga Joey throw some pretty dumb blocks on Kenseth which pissed him off even more. all this compounded into fustration where Matt lost it at Martinsville. "It was different with Gordon than it was with Kenseth." This tho is 100% wrong. Jeff was multiple laps down and took out Boyer who was a chhampionship contender. Kenseth was multiple laps down and took out a Championship contender in Logano. It's the same thing and in all honesty what Gordon did was arguably worse because what he did actually did eliminate Bowyer from contention. Joey still had two races he could have won to advance and he couldn't do it. IMO what happend last year was NASCAR was already pretty ticked off after the events of the last two weeks. Harvick wrecking the field at Dega seriously had reports and annalists (Ricky Craven being a notable one) calling the Chase a joke (Which most fans would agree with) and comparing the Sport to the WWE. Kenseth just did what he did at the wrong time. NASCAR had enough with the drivers exposing the flaws in the points system and they came down hard on him to get their message to the drivers. 370. On the other hand, if Gordon had wrecked Bowyer at Homestead, I bet there would've been stiffer repercussions. As for the Kansas incident, Matt came down on Joey. I've watched that 100 times, and Joey held his line the whole way through. Even if he had moved him, I wouldn't blame him since Matt had been blocking Joey for a few laps and had just run him into the wall. With 5 to go, Joey just didn't lift when Matt came down on him, like he had been doing the entire time they'd been battling for the lead. If that had been Harvick, Junior, JJ, Kyle Busch, or any other of a number of drivers, especially Gordon, the fans would've called it a "great move" and a "racing incident". 372. I think Matt was more upset at the fact that even though Joey let him back in line afterwards, he got put in a position where he got involved in the third big wreck(and ended up on his roof and almost going over the backstretch wall into the infield). I did read where they talked things out a day later and since then have run together without incident. 373. He was laps down when he did take Bowyer out. If you're gonna use the argument he was racing Bowyer for position before the incident, Kenseth was racing Logano in the top 5 before him an his teammate started playing games on the restart which led to the incident that took out Kenseth. Either way while the lead up was different the end result was the same. a driver who was not on the lead lap came back out on the track and took a contender out. That means that, while Kenseth now has two wins on the season, he'll only have the benefits of the one earlier victory, because when NASCAR changed the Chase eligibility rules to guarantee any winner virtually automatic Chase eligibility, they also put in a provision that if a winning car is caught violating the rules, the win won't count toward Chase eligibility. And although Kenseth had already qualified for the Chase with his earlier win, and got the bonus points for it, what's likely to happen is that, while the win (#38, pushing him past Bobby Isaac on the all-time list) will stand in the record books, when the Chase begins, it will be like his win in this race never happened, because he probably won't get Chase credit for this win, as well as the bonus points that go with it. All this means that if he doesn't get another win prior to the start of the Chase, he'll officially have only one credited win going into the Chase, not two. 395. It kills me that in the decade and a half now that I've been going to Loudon, just how rapidly the crowds have dwindled. Saturday's attendance looked somewhat impressive but then again there were three different races from three seperate divisions. Today had a threat of thunderstorms coupled with high humidity and if course the biggie: no Junior. In all honesty the chase race last fall had a minutely better crowd in my opinion. But not by much. Nonetheless it was shocking to me when we trekked down the hill from the car lot to grab drinks before the green just how desolate the place was. I bought 2 35 dollar general admission seats and sat in 75 dollar seats 45 rows up in turn 3 and saw (almost) everything today. I saw far too many shimmering aluminium seats. And not nearly enough bodies. The fans I ran into seemed very loyal and quite knowledgeable. I toured pit road, got to meet Kenny Wallace, Brian Scott and Matt DiBenedetto, who was super generous and really friendly. Sure made me a fan. Heck I was even on TV for a few minutes behind kyle petty's hair at the nbc stage. As for the race itself, well, I'd call it typical Loudon. The first half plus always Flys by(or drags on to those at home) with long green runs. Maybe a debris yellow to break it up. Then comes the last hundred laps. I swear Hoots was on the nascar scanner for the entire run from lap 228 to 264 asking the spotters about debris. Finally it came out when the 15 complained the loudest and guess who got the lucky dog. The 15. What ensued was exciting yes but unnecessary honestly. I would have had no problem with it riding to the end under green and the 78, the 18 or the 20 winning. Some races just flow that way. Today that flow was tourniqueted. Instead the last 30 laps seemed like an entirely separate race. And it got crazy in a hurry. Those last few restarts were mass chaos, as anticipated. Watching the gaggle of cars come of turn 2 before Larson's spin and identify very quickly that 4 wide has never worked here before and they sure aren't making through this corner. Props to Larson for keeping his car from flying back up into traffic. That was astounding. In the end, Kenseth ran away in anti-climatic fashion for his second win on the campaign. Everyone got a good kick outta Tony using up Joey to score 2nd place. And we all headed towards the exits mostly satisfied with the scorching day that we had spent at the races. The checkered flew around 4:40 and my pops and I arrived at our traditional dairy Queen stop at 5:17 sharp. That's both good and bad for the same reason: no traffic. Yes, it was a breeze leaving the track and it made the commute home that much quicker. But I also recall in 2013 it took me about 30 mins just to leave the track. 12 years ago it took 2-3 hours (no joke. 2004, first chase race. Yikes!) Now mind you I take the backroad getting in and out. I avoid our troublesome interstates at all costs. As for parking, I park in roughly the same location, in the same lot, N9, every year. Yes a lot has changed in the sport between 2004 and even 2013 to the present. One thing has not changed though, and that is the loyalty and passion we all share for this sport. It's what keeps me coming back every single year since 1999. It just troubles me when I see fewer and fewer faces every year. When I am halfway home only 40 minutes after I got in my car and drove out of the track. That's when it troubles me. I will forever stick up for and support my home track and the sport I grew up loving. But days like today worry me. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day, don't get me wrong. But I am not naive. What I saw today is not healthy nor sustainable and it needs addressing. Ignoring the overall issues with nascar as a entity and focusing just on the track and it's sagging attendance. Maybe it's time for lights ( I hate it personally, but perhaps the novelty draws fans) And turn the oppressively hot July race into a Saturday night special. Or, and I hate to even say this but, just have 1 race for nhms. Anyways just some musings and observations from my long Sunday. Apologies as always for the length! 398. The first is to look at historical precedent, back when the sport was most popular, and try to change some things back to how they used to be when races still drew crowds in person and on tv. Secondly, they need to have fan opinion polls about a lot of issues. Ask fans at every track and online over the next year, and you'll see what needs to be changed. However, I'd say the chance that BZF will do this is about the same as the chance Obama will call for a constitutional amendment and get elected to a 3rd term this fall. 399. Not to the point where you start changing the rules package every year or even ticker with it in the middle of the season during points racing events just because fans of certain drivers hate seeing their favorites struggle with a certain rules package or because a given race wasn't entertaining enough, that's the stuff that sets Nascar back, not moves it forward. 402. NASCAR has a fan council, they ask them a bunch of stuff for "research purposes." Let give you a little bit of that "research." NASCAR once poll 10,000 fans, out of that 10,000, 73% want cautions too bunch up the field. And you can ask Jolly Mean Giant when he goes too Darlington. And NASCAR fans have a wonderful history of throwing of stuff on the race track and at winners (Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon (3 times), Joey Lagono got it 3 times last year). Yeah, NASCAR listens too its fans and nothing good has come from it. Unless everyone an become like the Borg and be a single minded collective: "Anyone who has spent 30 seconds in a NASCAR forum knows that "listening to the fans" is impossible because they don't hold a solitary view." IF Jr is seriously considering retirement (and considering how many concussions he's now had, I don't know why he wouldn't be), I think he'll spend the majority of the rest of this season healing up and then make NEXT year his last year. To me that makes the most sense. He can have his own "Farewell Tour" or whatever next year, and then in 2018 they can bring JRM up to Cup (essentially as an SHR satellite replacement) AND potentially simultaneously sign Larson (whose Ganassi deal expires) for the #88. 408. And its pretty much inevitable that Larson will end up either at Hendrick or SHR sometime in the near future. So here is what I think Hendrick's lineup will look like the next few years: 2017: Same as this year, unless Hendrick decides to send Kahne to HScott (this was a rumor a while ago but haven't heard anything about it since Harvick resigned with SHR so don't think it'll happen) 2018: 5- Kyle Larson 24- Chase Elliott 48- Jimmie Johnson 88- Dale Jr if he's still racing, if not, someone as a stop-gap (Ryan Newman maybe?) until they can reel in the big fish being John Hunter Nemechek (sorry, but I don't think it'll be Bowman) Eventually, the lineup will look like: Hendrick: 5- Kyle Larson 24- Chase Elliott 48- Jimmie Johnson (still think he's got a decent amount of years left) 88 (or 8)- John Hunter Nemechek JRM: Main car: Bowman Part-time car: Dale Jr (for a few years at least) Kahne might end up with Ganassi 410. Pretty much every race has been won by either Penske, Gibbs, or Haas. Only 3 haven't. In the past 5-10 years, lots of other top teams have either shut down (Red Bull Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing), or have dropped off (Richard Childress Racing, Roush Fenway Racing, Richard Petty Motorsports, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing). On Sean's excellent Racermetrics site, he has done the math and found that last year was the least competitive since 1999. This year looks to be even less competitve. Every year since 2012 has been less competitve then the last. If trends continue, we might soon be regressing back to the 1970s era, where only Richard Petty, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Bobby Allison, Benny Parsons, and Buddy Baker were contenders. Doesn't mean Cman should complain about it every week, though. 428. The Real Slim Shady posted: 07.19.2016 - 5:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'd argue that it's less competitive now then it was in 1999. At least in 99, there was 6 real strong teams: Roush, Gibbs, Yates, Hendrick, Penske, and Childress. Now it is just Gibbs, Penske, Stewart-Haas, Hendrick, and Furniture Row. Also Bill Davis finished in the Top 10 in 1999, Morgan-McClure, DEI, and Petree made the Top 15, while Petty and SABCO both won a race and had a car make the Top 20 in points. Travis Carter also reached the Top 20. That is 12 deprecate organizations making the Top 20. Now besides the 5 I already mentioned for 2016, Roush, Childress, Ganassi and the Wood Bros are the only other teams in the Top 20. That is 9 teams, and Furniture Row is a Gibbs satellite, and the Wood Bros are a Penske Satellite. We really are in a not so competitive situation, but it's gradually been falling off the entire 21st Century. I'd take 1999's situation over 2016's in a heartbeat. 429. Sean posted: 07.19.2016 - 8:27 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) "On Sean's excellent Racermetrics site, he has done the math and found that last year was the least competitive since 1999." Hold on a minute with that. The most recent years are less accurate than the earlier years. Field strengths were calculated based on adding each driver's season performance scores in that moment in time (which was defined based on the current year, the two years before, and the two years after.) For drivers who did not have a complete run of five consecutive seasons, I used fewer years of data in my calculations, and the earliest (1949-50) and latest (2014-15) seasons will not be accurate as a result. To calculate the field strengths, I divide by the standard deviation of all the drivers' season scores in that race. Since for the current season, I will only be using 3 years of data for all drivers (the current year and the two previous years) this creates an artificial skew by definition that leads to higher standard deviations (because fewer data are being used) and therefore lower field strengths. In other words, you can't really judge what 2014's "proper" field strength was until 2016 is over, or 2015's until 2017 is over, and so on. Although I did provide a number for 2014, this is biased and does not necessarily reflect what the actual field strength for that year is, and I do believe I stated that in the article. "I had no idea that Sean was in charge of the Racer Metric, and Race Database. Sean you do an excellent job on those sites, and I believe you are a certifiable genius sir." Well, did. I stopped updating race-database after 2015 because almost everything I was archiving was available somewhere else (usually here and one other site), this hobby isn't particularly profitable especially considering how time-consuming it is, and it was getting tedious continuing to update it. I wanted to do more creative work (which was Racermetrics.) I may go back and archive some more on there eventually. I probably will someday, but there are tons of other things I'm more obsessed with now. I've had minimal interest in promoting either of my sites on here because race-database is (was) a racing-reference competitor and that would just be tacky, and Racermetrics...well after I screwed up while writing for another site, critiquing that site's work on here, and getting fired, I'm kind of still embarrassed writing columns myself. My columns are of a very different nature than those on that site however as I am more interested in historical and global perspectives, while the other site focuses on current NASCAR (nothing wrong with that - it's a lot easier to market, even with NASCAR's current popularity decline.) I also believe that dominance, speed, versatility, and on-track passing are the most important things to consider when evaluating drivers while most other sites argue for the final result, although I think the things I mentioned are better in terms of predicting future results in general than current results are, because results are more dependent on luck than the others are. As for being a "genius", I don't even know what that means anymore. I have a lot of freakish nerdy talents (as do a lot of other people here I believe), but the flip side of that is there are numerous other things considered an important part of everyday life in which I badly struggle, and I think most of those are more important than my abilities in competitive typing, Scrabble, rapid arithmetic computation, or racing archival/analysis. Several people here know more than I do about racing history, and lots know more about racing engineering, aerodynamics, and so on (I usually keep my mouth shut during those discussions but do try to soak them in.) Alex's knowledge is underrated and mine is overrated, although yes, race-database did help me to build a much greater historical and general racing knowledge compared to what I had before, but it still pales compared to many here. As for Racermetrics, I think my top 100 IndyCar drivers ranking (which I also posted here excerpted), was some sort of magnum opus and I don't have much interest in writing more columns in the near future. I have lots of fragments of ideas, but my interests are shifting again as they tend to constantly. I know I heavily implied at least that I was going to do a 50-driver honorable mention column after my original list, but I never got around to it and now it would be far too late. I will say this though: if I was redoing the list now, Josef Newgarden would be on it and one of the bottom ten would be off. I also think I whiffed badly leaving Danny Ongais off of the original list (although I think my other snubs were correct.) So I probably would have cut out two of Jimmy Snyder/Jud Larson/Chuck Stevenson in exchange for Ongais/Newgarden. In retrospect, I think Stevenson, even though he won a title, is the least deserving of those and he probably should have been my 100 and the driver I replaced Ongais with. 431. I had noticed that there wasn't any data for 2016, so I was happy you cleared that up. The truth is, there aren't many racing statistics sites I like, I am extremely picky. So thank you for creating it. As for me, I have more of an interest in evaluating race teams, and I judge drivers and teams based on several metrics. I judge based off wins, podiums, how many Top 5's, 10's, 15,s, and 20's. How many laps led, and how many times they finish high in points. I judge drivers based in their equipment. I'm very impressed by a guy who can take a small team to heights it never has seen before. I also like to judge based off consistency. I value consistency, dominance, and overall quantity of good finishes. I really wouldn't mind doing stats myself, but I just don't think I have the personality to relate to other people. Like I am too abrasive and I like having the most knowledge, so I don't like sharing my secrets. Lol. It was your emphasis on race teams instead of drivers which is relatively uncommon that clued me into your identity, yes. 2005? The little teams were being squished out of business as early as 1997. The main thing that caused this was sometime in the very late '80s or early '90s NASCAR changed the testing rules from allowing 7 tests a year per team to 7 tests a year per car. Before they did that, multi-car teams didn't have that great an advantage (Hendrick and Johnson usually had pretty good years, but Junior Johnson had clearly fallen from his peak and was usually better as a 1-car team, and Hendrick hadn't hit its peak yet.) However, once teams got 14 tests if they had 2 cars, 21 tests if they had 3, and so on, single-car teams were becoming troglodytes. This new rule wasn't exploited very well at first because most teams had not learned to run their multi-car teams as if they were one team. Junior Johnson and Jack Roush for instance usually ran their operations as several teams under the same umbrella, and it was not until Hendrick ran his multi-car team with more significant sharing between his multiple cars that the model was created. And it was basically in this time (1995-96) when the underfunded single-car teams all started faltering, and 1997-2000 when most of them went out of business (Bud Moore, Butch Mock, Stavola Brothers, all the remaining owner-drivers except Brett Bodine and Dave Marcis, etc...) The single-car teams could still hang in there in 1997, but by 1998, they were basically already irrelevant with occasional rare exceptions (I mean the last single-car entry to finish top five in points before Truex last year was Earnhardt in 1996, so I would say the situation you cite really started in the late '90s.) 2001-03 was a bit of a reversal because a lot of second and even third-tier teams managed to add second and third cars. This was the peak of NASCAR's popularity ever (and it will never be approached again) thanks to the FOX/NBC deals and the considerable momentum NASCAR had accumulated in the '90s. The product was already declining and getting gimmickier even in that period, although it was nothing like what it would become. I wouldn't say there were really many little guys left even as late as the early 2000s, but there were at least more marginal multi-car teams like Bill Davis, Andy Petree, and the like that could still be randomly competitive in any given race. By the standards of the early '90s however even teams like that would be monstrous behemoths (lots of the top teams in the early '90s had 15-20 employees, and I think practically every early 2000s team was much more massive in scope than this.) Bottom line: you're almost a decade younger than I am but if you were watching in the mid-'90s at the time it would have been clear that the years from 1996-98 as the other powerhouses reacted to Hendrick finally getting the multi-car team model to work by sharing information between his teams in a way that no other multi-car team had yet mastered (well maybe Carl Kiekhaefer and Holman-Moody decades earlier, but not really relevant to this point) were the real years of decline in this point. 2001-03 was a fairly artificial bubble because sponsorship was so massive as a result of NASCAR having more races on broadcast television than ever before allowing 25th-30th place teams to get surprisingly marquee sponsorships, but the product was already declining and it had definitely been several years before 2005. 441. I was looking at journal entries I wrote when I was a kid, that kept track of when teams started to add a second car so I probably with my mind if I was older would have seen it coming in the 1990's. I purchased some very old Racing Milestone Magazines when I was 13, and in an edition from early 1998, there was a feature about how the multi car teams were strangling the little teams. Ricky Rudd said in that article "When I see guys like Bud Moore leave the sport, that makes me concerned for the future." Another thing that helped the parity in the early 2000's was Dodge coming back. They came with Evernham, and helped Chip Ganassi revitalize SaBCO as the rebranded Chip Ganassi Racing. DEI also came into their own around that time. Those 3 joined the Big 6 in making a Big 9, and those 9 teams well and truly dominated while even the mid pack multi car organizations like MB2, Petree, Travis Carter, and Bill Davis would wither away. It was really sad in the late 2000's watching all those mergers and shutdowns because that was when the sport really started to struggle. I really think NASCAR so much more fun to watch when the whole field had a chance. We basically are now in a situation where we have only 25 decent rides and everyone else just can't do anything. It is sad to watch. 1-40, this sport is at the worst point of even your lifetime. 442. Knowing Gordon is gonna be racing at two of his best tracks, in a surprise return, is a fun little bit for the year! Maybe Gordon can pull off some Tim Richmond magic, from 1987, and steal a pair of wins! Then, retire for good. Let's go Gordon#88! 447. It's a lot better when you have a competent crew chief to make good pit decisions than past years when mediocre crew chief calls held her back. She was definitely getting a lot better towards the end of the race, another 15 laps and possibly a caution away from a top 10 finish. People should have seen this coming, as Danica's best tracks are the short-tracks. Yes, I know that NH isn't a short track but it drives like one. I'd probably put Danica in the top 10 short track drivers based on her pure consistency to put up good performances. Anyway, onward to Indy, the track that made her famous and started "Danicamania." She had a grip on the setup (running in the top 15) last year until a bad crew chief call (happens as often as misfortunes happen to Truex Jr.) relegated her into the twenties. Put her in a good position this weekend and she will walk out with a top 10 that is long overdue this season. 453. markjeff531 posted: 07.20.2016 - 6:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Danica's "strong finish" last weekend was because of all the late yellows, I hope you realize that. Eventually, he said that he would likely never run another Cup race (because of the extra strain on a team that a one-off effort causes). The "retirement" was the spin put on it by the media. However, in fairness, there are two places where Jeff himself called it a retirement: describing his biography and his Twitter profile (however, the latter could be accessed by a PR representative). 457. JSPorts posted: 07.21.2016 - 4:13 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @452 Yes, it was a strong finish. Not a strong race, had next-to-nothing to do with the crew chief. It's just how Loudon is: if you're within a lap of the leaders with 100 to go and don't crash, you normally end up with a top 15. Her average running position in this race was 23rd. Of the crew chiefs Danica has worked with, Tommy Baldwin, Jr. has an average finish of 25.1, Tony Gibson has an average finish of 17.9, Daniel Knost has an average finish of 21.9 and Billy Scott has an average finish of 20.9. Her 2nd-best crew chief, as Tony Gibson is one of the best in the garage. Her marginal improvement this season over last is mostly due to her and the team's improvement (if you count the same points position and an increase in average finish of 0.9 as anything other than the same). Her short track performance isn't exactly anything to write home about, as out of the top 30 drivers, her average finish of 23.9 on short tracks ranks 28th, ahead of only Casey Mears and Landon Cassill. The next closest driver above her for a team that made the Chase last year (as SHR did) is Martin Truex, Jr. at 21.1. In fact, her average finish is better at road courses, though she performs about the same at every track type (best to worst, only 4.6 difference in average finish). If she's in the top 10 short track drivers, then I guess so are Trevor Bayne and David Ragan. Also, these "good performances" on short tracks fall well short of the averages of the other SHR drivers, 13.6 (Harvick), 14.6 (Stewart) and 17.3 (Busch). Danica's best finish at Indianapolis is 27th last year, and her average finish there is 33rd. Let's compare Danica's "bad luck" this year to Truex's: Danica gains, on average, 0.2 spots from her average running position to her finishing position this year. Truex loses, on average, 4.5 spots. And no, even if she did have so much "bad luck", they wouldn't talk about it. Chris Buescher and Ricky Stenhouse have also had a lot of bad luck this season, but when you run in the 20s, they don't talk about you that much. I would say she has a shot at a top 10 this weekend, but then again, she should every weekend because she's driving for one of the top teams in NASCAR. We'll have to wait and see. In conclusion, Danica had a good ending to another mediocre race this weekend at NHMS, as happens to her 1-5 times per year (yielding sporadic top 15 finishes). 461. Damon posted: 07.21.2016 - 10:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) 460, Regarding Danica's Indy performances in Cup, this is where the average finish doesn't tell the whole story. Yes, she stunk in 2013, but in 2014 she started 14th, was running 13th on lap 60 and spent 34 of the first 68 laps in the top 15 before a broken axle sent her to the garage, she returned to the race later to complete 114 laps. In 2015 she started 15th , ran 92 laps in the top 15, was 13th on lap 149 when Dale Jr wrecked, then she had three poor restarts to finish 27th. So the finishes haven't been there at Indy, but she's run well enough to contend for a top 15 and if everything comes together, maybe a top 10. 465.
