He is on the hunt to defend his victory from last season. Can he make it two in a row? Jeff Gordon makes his return, substituting for NASCAR's Most Popular Driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. due to concussion-like symptom health issues. He will continue to do so again next week on Pocono! This will be the first time ever Jeff Gordon will NOT race in the #24, but will continue to race for Hendrick Motorsports. This is also the first of two races not part of his 797 consecutive race streak from 1992-2015. 2. He's said multiple times that he doesn't enjoy racing in NASCAR anymore, likely a combination of the direction the sport is going in and the current car that is being used. I could see him running the truck race at Eldora, but that's it (in fact, I'd be surprised if he DOESN'T end up running that race). He'll still race though, in dirt cars and off-road vehicles. 12. In IndyCar obviously its much different, but I'm sorry, the history of the track and how important it is to other racing series doesn't make up for the awful racing product IMO. If we removed the banking and restrictor plates from Daytona, it would be boring with the cars spread out everywhere, but it would still be considered a crown jewel. I usually identify the Crown Jewels as tracks and races with a lot of history and a larger payout. But obviously it's your opinion as well. 30. I disagree. The Brickyard 400 is prestigious event for NASCAR. NASCAR used to put on some really enjoyable racing at the track but with each aero-change every season since 1994 the racing slowly got slightly worse at the track until the double-whammy of the COT & Tiregate in 2008. NASCAR just needs to find the right setup for Indianapolis and the racing could be very good again. And I always considered Darlington to be a crown jewel even during the 2005-2008 seasons when it was no longer being billed as the "Southern 500". 35. IMS built a small 3/16th mile dirt track inside turn 3 and let Smoke and a handful of other racers run USAC Midgets around it in casual hot laps early in July during the lead up to this race. Tony's old car owner Keith Kunz prepared the Midget Stewart drove. Watch the aerial shots from today's race, you can see the dirt track from that event is still in the turn 3 infield. It is designed to be temporary. 47. It says He won the titles in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 (when Jimmie Johnson won) instead of 1995, 1997, 1998, and 2001 like he did. 48. I can say I've hardly, if at all, watched a NASCAR race this year and have been plenty occupied with consistently better racing from open-wheel and sports car series. Heck, I just came from spectating at the IMSA WeatherTech Race at Lime Rock, which had to be one of the best races of the year in all of motorsports I've watched. The fan access at those races is just incredible. I didn't see footage, but apparently after this race Kyle Busch spread Skittles all over the famous Yard of Bricks as the team kissed the bricks, many of which were crushed and spread all over the area. Maybe I'm overreacting a bit, but does anyone else feel insulted that he would do something like that to perhaps the most important yard of race track pavement in the world? All of the great drivers that have won the Indianapolis 500 over the years have crossed those Yard of Bricks, but Kyle thinks it's fine to spread candy all over it. So many people respect that track and everything about it, yet it seems like Kyle doesn't. 517. dennyfan11 posted: 07.25.2016 - 9:01 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Here's how I'd improve NASCAR, as a related note to this: 1. Schedule changes: Get rid of Indianapolis and Kentucky, take one race away from Texas. Replace them with Gateway, Road America, and Mosport. 2. For qualifying, get rid of all provisionals, except past champions. The fastest 40 make it in, the slowest ones don't. Simple as that. 3. Remove the caution clock from the Truck series 4. Get rid of lug nut checks 5. Get rid of the chase. Whoever's the best after 36 races should be the champion. 6. Get rid of charters 7. Put ALL races on either FOX or NBC 8. Bring back racing back to the flag, unless the track is blocked 9. Stop throwing phantom debris cautions 10. Use a package to make the draft matter more on tracks like Michigan 11. And ban all cup guys from competing in lower series. Do you agree? 518. JSPorts posted: 07.25.2016 - 9:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (2) I agree for the most part. 1. I don't think we should get rid of Indy, and certainly not Kentucky. That was one of the most entertaining races of the year. I do think no track should host more than 1 race, so that we could fit more tracks into the schedule. 2. Qualifying should be a 1-hour session where the fastest 50 cars make it into the field. Expand the field in hopes of attracting larger number of teams, cars and sponsors. 3. No more caution clock. 4. No more lug nut checks. 5. No more Chase, for sure. 6. No more charters, again, great idea. 7. I would like to see all the races on Fox or NBC but I think it's really up to the networks. 8. Race to the flag regardless. Warn them if the track is blocked, but we really should have races back to the flag. That would make everything more exciting. 9. No more phantom cautions, or debris cautions if it's out of the way. Look at F1, they don't throw all these debris cautions and it hardly causes issues. What especially upsets me is that it seems these "phantom" cautions come out when certain drivers need it. I'll leave it up to y'all to determine who the certain drivers are. 10. If the draft matters more, then everybody wins. The most exciting races of the year are always at Daytona and Talladega, so why not have a package (not exactly like that) similar to those at Michigan? 11. Allow drivers to compete in 1 race per weekend. 519. rm posted: 07.25.2016 - 9:46 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 517 - a lot of these are nice suggestions but largely impractical, I will try to explain. 1. Up until the past 8 years, going back to the tire debacle, Indianapolis was one of the more anticipated tracks on the schedule by the drivers. Even now it's probably on most drivers' lists of tracks they would want to win at most. As much as we the fans have turned on it in the past few years, it's not going anywhere. Texas isn't going anywhere either, they usually get a decent turnout for that race. And I agree with Kentucky losing its date but once again, it's just not going to happen. As for the replacement tracks, Gateway doesn't seem like it would be a good fit in the Cup schedule. Sure it's entertaining in the Truck series the past couple years but there were quite a few snoozers in the Busch races there in the mid 2000s. More road courses would always be fun but many drivers are split between wanting more road courses and keeping the 2 already on the schedule. 2. This doesn't seem like it would be an issue today due to 40 or 41 showing up on the entry list every week but the moment someone like Dale Earnhardt Jr. or Joey Logano or Matt Kenseth, etc., crash on their first qualifying lap and can't post a time and DNQ is going to be an uproar. I think maybe doing an abbreviated version of the Owner's Points rule, instead of having the top 35 or 30 locked in only doing, say, drivers currently in the Chase locked in, would provide the possibility of a big team DNQ'ing but not a superstar. 3. I'm sure I'll be crucified for saying this here but I don't mind the caution clock. Sure it's not pure or whatever but the Truck Series has always been a place for gimmicks - hell, the idea of racing modified pickup trucks is a gimmick itself. As long as it doesn't make its way up to the Cup series I'm fine with leaving it alone. 4. I think just about everyone from fans to drivers to team members want lugnut checks to be eliminated. 5 & 6. Two hotly debated topics that I don't really want to dive into, otherwise I might be here all day. No comment on the Chase for me other than the original format for the Chase was probably my favorite variation of it. And the charter system looks to be a multiyear plan, we should let it play out before we decide to scrap it after half a season. 7. This is a tricky one, have the races been moved to cable because nobody watches them? Or does nobody watch them because they're on cable? I have zero beef with the networks if they moved all the races back to the main channels. There's obviously a reason the races are being preempted, and I really hope that it's not because more people tune into the final round of a PGA Tour event on a Sunday than a NASCAR race, because that would be a sad state of affairs. 8. This is a horrible idea. They stopped it for a reason, because it was way too dangerous. And saying "unless the track is blocked" leaves the rule very vague. That's what the current rule is on cautions during the white flag - and see how open to interpretation that is? Bringing back racing to the yellow is just asking for trouble, zero chance that would happen or make the sport better. 9. Most debris cautions are legitimate - see the chunk of metal resting just outside of the groove yesterday for example - but I have no issue here if NASCAR decided to stop throwing the yellow for a hot dog wrapper on the apron in turn 3 just because there's a 95 lap green flag run going. 10. That ultra low downforce package should be the new package going forward. Make the cars hard to drive again. Though if that package were instituted right now, I'm sure by this point next year they'd have to roll out yet another new package because these teams will figure out how to regain nearly all of that downforce - that's what the engineers are for. 11. Another topic that's not so cut and dry. I hate seeing Kyle Busch going out there and winning every Xfinity race he enters as much as the next guy but I'd rather see that than see an Xfinity entry list with 30 teams on it. I'm sure I'm in the minority on this site for saying that though. So many people on here seem to not understand how difficult it is to keep a race team afloat, especially in a lower series than Cup. 520. I'm headed to Mid-Ohio this weekend for the IndyCar/Pirelli World Challenge/Indy Lights/USF 2000 races. For $65 a person there's grandstand seating, racing from 9AM until 5PM almost non-stop, 1 major league automobile race, two lower feeder series races, and the Pirelli World Challenge which is a pro/am series. Compare that to attending the Cup race at Kentucky Motor Speedway a few weeks ago: Racing from 7:30PM until 10:30PM, 1 major league automobile race, grandstand seating, and $85+ depending on where I want to sit. At one time when I enjoyed NASCAR more I would have held these two in fairly equal standing, but now that NASCAR is just another racing series to me, it doesn't really make a lot of sense. I wish IMSA would go to Mid-Ohio, but it really isn't that nice of a track in the first place. 523. STATMAN posted: 07.25.2016 - 11:50 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 517, 1. Top 25 spots can based on speed and the bottom 5 on owner points with spot 30 being a past champion provisional if needed. 3,4&6. Agreed 5. To be honest a Chase doesn't bother me, but I really don't like this current system. I liked the 2011-13 system the best and if we are going to have a chase I think we use that system. 7&10. She unfortunately was caught up in the mess caused by Newman and derailed any chance she had of getting a top 15. Danica was primed to pull out the late gasp top 15 that she is accustomed to getting but getting caught in that accident hurt any chance she had of that. She ran decent after getting the lucky dog but it appeared that the setup by Scott didn't transfer over to the track on Sunday that it showed on Friday. Once again, something bad happens to Danica and her speed doesn't justify how much better her car was at the end of the race than her finish. On to Pocono. In terms of luck this has to be her worst track. She has run about ~20th (outside of the race earlier this year) or above in the last 3-4 races and only has one decent finish to show for it. She's making good improvements with the new setup and will be knocking on the door of a couple top 10's (at least) soon. Maybe with a little good luck she can pull it off this weekend, she's shown the speed to do it at Pocono before. 526. Still her best finish at Indy, her average finish there is now up to 30.2. I don't think she's "accustomed" to getting a late gasp top 15. She has 13 top 15 finishes in her career, which spans 138 races. That's only 9% of the races (or 3 per 36 races). As for Pocono, she just hasn't had any luck there. In 7 starts, she has only 1 DNF but only 2 LLFs. Her average finish there is 30.9, while her average start is 23.6. Her average running position, however, is 23.7. So, even though she runs about where she qualifies, she drops 7.2 spots per race from her average running position to her finishing position. Bad breaks and not being able to finish out races has doomed her there. It seems to me that she has problems finishing races on the tracks where there are a lot of cars on the lead lap. 527. JSPorts posted: 07.25.2016 - 3:31 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) @524 (Baker), NASCAR used to have a points system like this. The race points were based on purse, so the biggest races, which had bigger purses, were worth more. From 1949-51, NASCAR used a system like this. You took the purse, divided it by 20 and then divided that number by 10, which you then subtracted to get each remaining position. For example, if the race paid $1,000, the winner got 50 points, 2nd got 45, 3rd got 40, 4th got 35, 5th got 30, etc. This system only paid points to the top 10 finishers. From 1952-62, the system was pretty much the same, but now you divided the total purse by 500 to determine the fall-off from position to position. So if the purse was $10,000, the winner got 500 points, 2nd got 480, 3rd got 460, 4th got 440, 5th got 420, etc. This system paid points to the top 25 finishers. From 1963-65, races that paid $4,200-$6,000 gave the winner 400 points, 2nd 384, 3rd 368, 4th 352, 5th 336, etc. The top 25 earned points. Other races are less clear as to how the points were awarded. From 1966-67, races that paid $4,200-$6,000 awarded 1st 400 points, 2nd 384, 3rd 368, 4th 352, 5th 336, etc. Events that paid $7,000-$10,000 gave the winner 500 points, 2nd 480, 3rd 460, 4th 440, 5th 420, etc. The top 25 earned points. From 1968-71, races were still weighted, but now by length instead of by purse. For races 0-249 miles, points went 50-49-48-47-46-etc. For races 250-399 miles, it was 100-98-96-94-92-etc. For races 400+ miles, it was 150-147-144-141-138-etc. This system paid the top 50 finishers points. From 1972-73, it was more even per race but very confusing, as points were paid per lap complete in '72 and based on a standard scoring system + laps completed in '73. In 1974, it went back to winnings. This system was odd, as it took the money won by a driver x the number of races stared and divided by 1,000. Then, in 1975, the system changed again. From 1975-2003, the winner got 175 points. From 1st-6th, each successive position got 5 fewer points. From 7th-11th, each successive position got 4 fewer points. From 12th-last, each successive position got 3 fewer points. The system also awarded 5 points for leading a lap, and an extra 5 for leading the most laps. This system paid points to a maximum of 54 drivers, though most races there weren't that many cars. From 2004-2006, the system stayed the same except the winner got 180 points. From 2007-2010, the winner got 185 points. In 2011, the system switched again. The winner now got 46 points, 2nd got 42 points, and each position below that got 1 fewer point for a maximum of 43 drivers. 1 point was awarded for leading a lap, while another was awarded for leading the most laps. In 2016, the system switched to a 40-driver system. 1st got 43 points, 2nd got 39 points, and each position behind was 1 fewer. Still, 1 point is awarded for leading a lap and 1 for the most laps. Got a little sidetracked, but now you know about the points system. lol. I don't agree with a system that weights certain races more than others, but if they did, I used last year's purses to show top 10 most important races and least important races. Top 10 most important would be: Daytona, Indianapolis, Texas 1, Texas 2, Charlotte 1, Las Vegas, Bristol 2, Daytona 2, Atlanta, Kansas 2 Top 10 least important would be: Watkins Glen, Pocono 1, Martinsville 1, Pocono 2, Phoenix 1, Kentucky, Richmond 1, Martinsville 2, Richmond 2 and Phoenix 2. 528. In the schedule I created, only the plate tracks and short tracks got 2 dates. Everyone else got one and I was able to add Iowa, Road America, Mid-Ohio and more. 2. Instead of the top 35 rule, I reccomend a top 15 rule, in that only the best teams get in (and not just everyone). Everyone else would have to race on time. 3. Don't care if the drivers want it, it's detrimental. Remove it. 4. If only we still had officials on pit road... 5. We can only hope. 6. I agree. 7. Although preferable, it's up to the broadcasters, after all no one seemed to have a problem pre 2001 with smaller networks covering races. 8. Bring back racing to the flag on the last lap ONLY. But there should only be a few provisionals, like maybe 5 in a 40 car field (so the fastest 35 are locked in). 3. Agreed 4. Just go back to the way it was before 2015. 5. No. Go back to the 2004-2006 way of the chase. It was simple. It rewards the drivers who were best throughout the season while also putting an emphasis on performing well when it matters. Without the chase, a driver can build up a huge points lead and then coast on mediocre finishes toward the end of the season and still win the championship (like Kenseth in 2003). But the current chase pretty much allows anyone who was half-decent during the regular season to have a shot at the championship. 6. Agreed 7. Agreed 8. No. Can't have that because it creates the potential for even more wrecks. Also people complain about the free pass, but remember back when they raced back to the caution the leaders generally let anyone who was right behind them a lap down get a lap back anyway. I do have a solution for GWC/overtime though, which is once the race reaches a certain lap, like maybe 5 to go, caution laps no longer count. 9. Agreed, but it will never happen. 10. That would be nice. Also do something about King Air. 11. While that would be great its completely unrealistic. The rest of the world (except for F1 one year) does not award different races different numbers of points. I believe that is the way it should still be here, but I guess NASCAR, IndyCar, and NHRA don't agree with me. Weighting races by money would be horrible as too many of the big-money races are cookie cutter intermediate races that have zero prestige. Besides, winnings aren't even being reported for races anymore. Weighting races by distance would also be horrible as that would give an advantage to those who dominate 400 mile/500 mile races at generic superspeedways over those who dominate on short tracks and 1 mile ovals. All races should count the same because luck can tend to be fairly random and a biased points system will be bias towards the races that are chosen to "matter." Josef Newgarden (although he is my favorite driver) is probably higher in the points than he should be because of the double-points Indy 500, while Montoya is probably lower than he should be because he crashed in it. Now Newgarden is still having a great season for the equipment he is in and Montoya is still having an awful season in the equipment he is in, but their actual performance is a lot closer than the points standings make it because of the differential Indy performance. It's time for this to be fixed, and the kind of IndyCar fans who tend to sneer on NASCAR in Racer comment sections really don't have a gripe as long as double points and Indy 500 qualifying points exist (and now they've followed NASCAR's lead in offering a bonus point to everyone who leads a lap as well...) IMSA I guess is doing it right with the same number of points per race for each position, except that since NASCAR owns them, they aren't rewarding the top positions enough, but at least that is a fair points system and not biased towards who is lucky/unlucky in different races. I wish the same could be said for NASCAR, IndyCar, or NHRA. 541. JSPorts posted: 07.25.2016 - 9:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I agree Sean. I had too get rid of it because it is full 100% racing sim and i suck at sims. Got half way through the career mode and toke it back too my local Gamestop. That would be early march and the weather would be sketchy in that area of the country. There is a good chance of cold temperature and snow is not out of the picture. 550. JSPorts posted: 07.26.2016 - 1:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yes, that is why certain races that have 2 dates like Michigan, Pocono and New Hampshire fall so close together in the schedule. Michigan has races 15 & 24, Pocono has 14 & 21, New Hampshire has 19 & 28. It would get too cold and run the risk of having snow when the races were up there if they came in early spring or late fall. Also, it gives the Southern tracks a break when it's 100 degrees down there. 551. Canadianfan posted: 07.26.2016 - 2:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Loved the original Dirt with the big T4 trucks. I'm from PA and I still think Pocono should just have one 500-mile race. Road America and Iowa should be on the Cup schedule. A road course (probably Sonoma due to weather) should be in the chase. 2. The top 30 in points should be guaranteed, then whoever the next fastest 10 cars are should qualify. 3. Agree. 4. Agree. I thought the first part of this season with teams policing themselves made for some extra storylines, and drama is always good in sports. 5. I'm apparently in the minority, but I love the Chase. I used to be a huge NASCAR fan, then kind of grew out of it, but since the inception of this new chase format, I have watched every Cup race and am on this site basically every day. My only change is I have thought from the beginning that whoever is the points leader after 26 races should receive a "first round bye." 6. Agree. I still don't understand the whole purpose of this, it doesn't seem to have helped anything. 7. Doesn't really matter to me. Would it be more convenient? Sure. But in today's times, I don't really care what channel a race is on, it can be found in seconds. 8. Disagree. I'll never forget that New Hampshire race. I do, however, think every race should be required to finish under green (unless weather, obviously), except for the two Talladega races. I would say Daytona as well, but those are too prestigious events to finish under caution. 9. 100% agree. Most annoying aspect of racing. 10. Disagree. 11. Disagree. I do, however, think Cup drivers starts in lower series needs to be limited. Former Cup champions get 5-7 races in either series, other drivers who declare for points in Cup limited to 10-12. That be said, (I forget which user posted it) but I loved the idea that wherever you finish in Cup points is how many Xfinity and Truck starts you can have the next season. 554. 1995 Subaru WRX Sti posted: 07.26.2016 - 4:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "I do have Dirt Rally for the PS4 but I just have not got around playing it." I do warn you it is very hard with a steep learning curve. It is a 100% full racing sim (Forza 6 isn't, it has arcadyish parts too it). You make a mistake (even the minorest of minor mistakes) you pay for it. There are no rewinds in that game, you mess up you have too do the whole stage over again. I once had too replay a stage 20 times in a row before i completed it. If you get easily frustrated, return the game. Too me i'd rather watch someone play DiRT Rally then play it myself. DiRT had the perfect balance of difficulty and realism. And it had CORR (Championship Off Road Racing) in it before CORR went belly up. I don't know if anyone has already done this but someone should do a blog were we talk about retro games (regardless of what genre). 555. I do think Talladega being moved was a good descision, it makes it less of a crap-shoot. About the start times, I don't like them. The later start times for tracks without lights, like Michigan, Pocono, Martinsville, and Talladega, create even less of a window in case of rain hits, and some races could be affected by darkness. As for the others, I like having them early in the afternoon, so this is a change for the worse. 565. This will not help ratings at all and will just allow for more situations like the 2009 Daytona 500. And the schedule itself will never really change, because of the stranglehold the track corporations have over the sport. I'd love to see Road America on the schedule as well, along with many other changes, but it's not going to happen. The only thing they've gotten right recently was getting the signature Darlington date back. 566. This is a really dumb move on NASCAR's part. I also don't like how Darlington was taken away from NBC and put on NBCSN. This is not going to increase race ratings at all.
