The odds definitely look pretty poor. 45% chance of the race even STARTING. At least they're better odds then the June race. I really hope we can get this race in today. Brian Neudorff's forecast is now much better, he now gives the race a 70% chance of starting today. However, since the storms are more likely to hit later in the afternoon, he gives a 55% of the race running to halfway, and a mere 45% chance of the race running to completion. I think we'll get it in. We've had VERY good weather luck this year, lots of races that looked like washouts ran fine. Talladega, Charlotte, July Daytona... The ONLY rain affected races have been Las Vegas (Delayed 30 minutes), Texas (Delayed 2 hours) and June Pocono (Postponed). 31. dennyfan11 posted: 07.31.2016 - 10:32 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Never mind that, just updated his forecast, he now gives only a 45% chance of the race starting today, and a mere 35% chance of finishing it. It would be a lot of work and might not prove a thing, but I wonder how the number of comments on this site correlates with the Nielsen rating a race gets on TV? The higher the rating, like Daytona, the more comments. Since very few commenters are at the track, obviously nearly all are watching on TV so there is logic behind the assumption. Regarding the all-time lows each Cup race is regularly setting as far as TV viewers -- is that being verified by the lack of comments here? Are the people who comment typical of Sprint Cup fans in general? 43. dennyfan11 posted: 07.31.2016 - 12:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) No rain coming on the radar, things look clear. 44. dennyfan11 posted: 07.31.2016 - 12:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) The sun is shining through the clouds! 45. If they even TOOK the green flag today it is highly unlikely in my mind that they would've made halfway. Think about it this way-would you rather see the full advertised distance run a day late, or have to sit through a race on the scheduled day that keeps getting interrupted constantly by rain delays, and either barely makes it to halfway or doesn't even crack that distance? 116. I'm in the same league as Braindead Zombie and Jolly Mean Giant. I would much rather see the race being run when they can get to the full distance. The fans that go to the track and pay the ticket prices to get those seats deserve a full show. In addition, for a track like Pocono, running to the full distance allows for more strategy and planning. See the short 150 truck race the other day? They had caution fever because they had to push, push, push. So I support NASCAR's decision to not have those poor fans stuck in the stands all day, dodging iffy weather to maybe start, to maybe get to the 200 mile mark. 137. I wanted to get the race in yesterday because I didn't know what i'd be doing tomorrow, and I like having the race run on it's scheduled day. The exceptions are when it's a night race, and it starts WAY too late, or when it's obvious there's no hope of starting the race. Still they didn't need to put the new wall that close to the track. It could be further down like it is at ever other big track. Where it is now it's arguably more dangerous. A car could go down there, hit it and come up back into traffic causing a huge crash. 382. Impressive to think with all the rain threats in the area, it's looking very likely now we will indeed see the full race today. Bummer for Truex; just wasn't his day today. Kind of expected him to dominate considering they brought back the Charlotte car for this race, but major tire issues killed any chances of that. And MAN, is Chase Elliott in a huge slump right now. He's started making those rookie mistakes I anticipated he would at the start of the year, and now his season is starting to look more like his predecessor's rookie year...Though taking out Logano is-no doubt-going to be a popular move with many! An upset, by the definition you've provided, would involve a straight up on track fight for the win, much like my example or Regan Smith's win at Darlington in 2011. Using the political example in the definition you provided, it wouldn't be an upset if someone wins an election because the other candidate died two days before Election Day and (for whatever reason) couldn't be replaced. 501. The Rookie of the Year standings is different than the actual points standing. Chris has 154 points, Chase Elliott had 244 points. That's a 90 point difference. Chris will need to start racking up top 10's while Chase will need to continue having bad finishes for the next 15 races in order for Chris to have any shot at it. Not to mention Ryan Blaney is sitting in between them as a runner-up with 195 points. Chris will probably be the only winning Rookie driver this season unless the other two pulls one out soon, but NOT Rookie of the Year material. 607. That race wasn't gonna restart until 3 am at the earliest. A better comparison to this would be the 2014 Coke Zero 400. It was only 2 or 3 in the afternoon when they called that race. Not to mention we witnessed Tony Stewart & Jeff Gordon take a final lap around the track post-race, it was touching for me and I'm sure to a lot of fans. We really don't have many moments when the underdogs are actually a threat to win a race, more or less steal one these days. Are we ever going to see Chris in a top ride in the future? We honestly can't tell the future. This could be his only shot at a win. So it would definitely be amazing to see him win one. I don't care if it's on strategy or if its win shortened, a win is a win. The whole David Reutimann victory at Charlotte back in 2009 being called a fluke? Please. I could sit here and say all of Jeff Gordon's (two on Pocono even), Tony Stewart's, Kurt Busch's, and others rain wins were flukes also, when they won on strategies and staying out during green flag pit stops, etc for those. I like what Jeff Burton said..."That trophy doesn't have an asterisk on it. It's gonna go home in his trophy case." Also, I was thinking the exact same thing as a few others above. As for murb's comment about scoring snafu's, it's not easy as the overwhelming majority of all "scoring errors" were, in reality, either Lee Petty cheating (and I have heard this from several drivers who raced against Lee) on his scoring cards, including his scorekeeper (wife Elizabeth) scoring Lee as completing laps even when Lee was in the pits, and Kiekhaefer's infamous backroom deals. As for stuff on Lee's end, it wasn't uncommon, but few, if any drivers, did it with even half of Lee's frequency. Mama Elizabeth was said to have the "fastest pencil in NASCAR." But guys like Royce Hagerty and Marvin Burke? Fully legitimate. The one race that really leaves me questioning the quality of the win from those days is 1958 Busti. I predict he will fail to keep it going this year. This is one of two race tracks that Toyota has yet to finish in the top 5 at. Michigan being the other, and we head there in a couple of weeks. Toyota has a 27 point lead over Chevrolet in manufacturer's standings. If Toyota continue to resume it's dominance for the rest of the season, I believe Toyota has a really solid chance of winning its first manufacturer's championship. Anything can still happen. Martin Truex Jr became the first driver this season to lead 1,000 laps all year. This is the first time of his career to accomplish this feat and it all came within the first 18 laps of this race from the pole. Congratulations Martin Truex Jr. Chris Buescher wins his first career Cup race in his rookie season, and is the third best rookie this year to Chase Elliot and Ryan Blaney. He scored his first win before Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney, as well as Kyle Larson, Austin Dillon, Danica Patrick and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. For the guys who has had success in the Truck and Xfinity series, Chris Buescher has the first laugh and celebration. Congratulations Chris! This is the second year in a row that we had two drivers outside of the top 30 in points had make it into the top 30 in points and win. Kurt Busch (despite being 22nd at the time of his first win, after missing the first 3 races in 2015 and being 33rd in points 5 races prior to Richmond) and Kyle Busch (who went on to win a championship despite missing the first 11 races). This season in 2016, Tony Stewart (Missed the first 8 races due to injury) and now Chris Buescher (Full time rookie, only 6 points behind David Ragan in 30th position). While this is interesting statistics, I really think the top 30 eligibility is to simple and ridiculous, and 16 Chase spots are too much and should go back to having a Chase with 10 drivers like it was back in 2004-2007 with the current elimination format or something. 714. The stats show as of now that Buescher has the lowest avg. finish position of any driver to win in the last 26 years. Front Row Motorsports occupy the top two spots in this case, unless of course you count Regan Smith at Talladega 2008. I think though by the end of the year his avg. finish will be a bit better. Will be interesting to check again then. But the one interesting one to me was Joe Nemechek's first win in 1999. He was driving for SABCO (now Ganassi) and would eventually be replaced by the late Kenny Irwin, Jr. Before this race, Joe's best finish on the year was 6th, twice. He had short run speed, as the 3 poles showed, but did nothing with it most of the year. Until this race, led 72 laps, which was 2nd most to pole sitter Rusty Wallace. Interestingly enough, Tony Stewart got his first win the week before at Richmond. Think that's the most recent time that two drivers won for the first time in consecutive weeks. If he was a scrub driver, he wouldn't have won the xfinity championship last year with 2 wins for Roush. Chris's problem is the team he's with in cup and this is a team that getting a top 20 place finish is a great day due to equipment and the size of the team. Front Row Motorsports is a back marker organization that is only able to win plate races or fluke wins due to them being underfunded. The only reason Chris isn't with Roush right now is because Roush doesn't want a 4th cup and didn't want to get a rid of any of their drivers after the 2015 season. The best way to put it is the extra money Front Row Motorsports get at the end of the year for finishing 16th in points would be just enough to do a minor upgrade to the equipment and wouldn't be enough to have Chris make the top 20 next year without a win. 729. It's no different than this race: People are used to the same drivers winning so they feel that it's nice to see a change. Good one, but that was mostly the work of a certain hypocrite who complains about NASCAR's decision to postpone races "too early", and then screams for them to call the race after five minutes of fog just because of the possibility of "the biggest upset ever!" Cassill is 35 points ahead of Buescher right now. That wouldn't accomplish much of anything. Essentially, Buescher is racing Ragan for 30th. That is most likely what it's going to come down to. He has 5 races to gain 6 points. 3 of the upcoming tracks we've already been to this year. Here's how those two finished in those races: Bristol: Buescher 21st, Ragan 39th Michigan: Buescher 20th, Ragan 22nd Richmond: Buescher 34th, Ragan 30th So, it certainly seems doable. NASCAR needs to hope that Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott become star driver that win races. They will be in trouble if they don't. The fact is Chase Elliott is ranked 4th on merchandise sales among cup drivers, but he does need to win a cup race at some point. While Chris Buescher won today, he isn't considered a star driver yet and needs to go to a better team or Front Row becomes a better team. The fact is Front Row at this point only has a shot to win at plates or win races that were shorten due to weather. The truth Joey Logano is the only established star with wins in his 20's, but Joey was only ranked 11th in merchandise sales in 2016. The other thing is Joey Logano is looked upon as a racing villain by the fanbase just like Darrell Waltrip was back in the 1970's and 1980's. 755. And about Gordon, I'm glad he came back. For everyone who knew me last year as 88&4Fan (pretty much everyone here, don't think we really have any new regular posters) you obviously know I didn't like him. It was originally because my dad didn't like him but then right when I finally started warming up to him he dumped Bowyer (who I liked a lot at the time), which set my respect level for Jeff back years (my respect for Clint would go down the drain less than a year later as well). By the end of the last season I was at the point where I respected his legacy but still didn't like him as a driver. I gained a lot of respect back for him listening to him in the booth this year but I thought that it was too late for me to ever be able to cheer for him. The reason for Casey Mears is because of the chances he blew in top equipment. Other drivers mentioned didn't get those chances. Just awful at Hendrick, just awful at Childress, just awful at Ganassi except for 1 good year(06) and just awful at Germain. People like to say that he is doing good at Germain because they are a small team and get decent-enough results. Those people are misinformed. When Germain Racing signed up for a technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing they spent more money on their alliance then Furniture Row Racing did which lead to Martin Truex Jr. finishing 3rd in points and winning a race, along with being a contender and have just awful, awful luck. Honestly he should of won 3-4 races last year. Germain Racing also spent more money on their technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing compared to JTG-Daughtry Racing. With AJ Allmendinger they were able to win a race, finish 13th in points and have 6/10 Chase races that year end in a top 15 finish. Germain Racing who spent MORE money then either of those teams got point finishes of 26th and 23rd with Casey Mears. This is the same Casey Mears that was with Hendrick, Ganassi, and Childress. Casey Mears is lucky that Germain Racing is a single car team. If he had a teammate right now it would show just how bad he is doing there. A lot of people in NASCAR like to give drivers in bad equipment breaks on their bad driving ability and instead blame the equipment for the lack of results. Rarely do people talk about how the driver is making the bad equipment finish worse then it should. Casey Mears is a perfect example of this. I honestly can't think of a better example. The cool thing about modern NASCAR is that it is easier to rate driver ability compared to equipment because of the multi-car teams. None of us can truly guess how strong Richard Childress Racing was when Dale Earnhardt was there because he was the only driver other then when a mediocre Mike Skinner raced with them. If Dale Earnhardt would of had 3 teammates we would of had a better idea how much the Richard Childress equipment was really helping Dale Earnhardt or not helping Dale Earnhardt. Dale Earnhardt never left Richard Childress even when Hendrick, Yates, and Junior Johnson were strong, it makes you wonder. 781. Considering how bad RCR was in 2009, I don't think he underachieved there much at all, and Ganassi I think was more of a case of McMurray overachieving than Mears underachieving. And his first few years at Germain he definitely overachieved (before they got the RCR support). He'd routinely get a few races per year where he legitimately ran top 20. Brands, Coca-Cola, South Korea-based Samsung and China-based electronics brand Hisense. There has "been concern in some corners of the industry about how the search is not yet complete, but NASCAR's top sales executive sounded confident a deal will get done." NASCAR Chief Sales Officer Jim O'Connell said, "We're in a really good place; we're exactly where we thought we'd be time-wise." Sources said that NASCAR is "likely to end up with at least a four-year deal" in the $25-35M range in annual rights fees. Sprint's original 10-year deal with NASCAR reportedly was worth $75M in "annual rights and activation fees combined"(Sports Business Daily) I see Hisense. They have gotten really involved the past few years. Would love to see Samsung, Coke, or Samsung. 804. I certainly hope the new sponsor signs on for longer than that. "I see Hisense. They have gotten really involved the past few years." Somehow I see Coca-Cola or Samsung taking over. Coca-Cola is already heavily involved with several teams, and Samsung has been a partner in various capacities for years. If Samsung does become the sponsor, there will probably be some disgruntled fans complaining about a South Korean company sponsoring the series--nevermind the fact that Sprint was acquired by Softbank, a Japanese company, in 2013. "Would love to see Samsung, Coke, or Samsung." I see who you are favoring here. ;) 805. John G., I think he's had even MORE than 3. Supposedly he had an undocumented one when he flipped at Daytona in '98. There's 1. Then you have California in '02, Dover '03, TWO in 2012, and now another one this year. That's 5 officially and 6 *unofficially*. Winston was with NASCAR for what.... over 30 years? Sprint/Nextel/whateverthehellitiscalled was 10 years. NASCAR isn't as popular as it once was. But i have too be honest i thought they'd get at least 6-8 years. NASCAR is taking one hell of a discount on the annual rights fees but that is too be expected. And we will not hear Rob Kauffman make a stink about it. Title sponser money isn't what TV money is. Kroger and Coca-Cola have been in NASCAR for quite some time and Samsung has sponsered the Spring Texas race for a number of years. Those 3 make sense too me. Hisense just came in. I'd rather Coke or Kroger. NASCAR really doesn't need a another tech company being title sponser. 809. Mamorese posted: 08.03.2016 - 1:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Hoping its coke. Pepsi Co. has a heavy involvement with Hendrick Motorsports so it makes me wonder if a company like Coca-Cola would come in and do the same thing. I'm not going to speculate any sponsors, but it is nice to see that there's several different sponsors that are "interested" 811. Brands operates Taco bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Wingstreet. 3 of the 4 have been on NASCAR broadcasts for Commercials or as NASCAR sponsors on cars. KFC has been on commercials on NASCAR broadcasts for years and including the lame "I ate the bones" commercials. Front Row Motorsports has used Yum! Brands companies on their cars in the past such as Taco Bell. Pizza Hut does have a history with NASCAR also with their first NASCAR commercial was with Hendrick Motorsports back in 2005. I do think Coca Cola and Kroger does makes the most sense since they have been in NASCAR the longest. 812. I'm afraid it may be one of the foreign companies, who would come in for 4-5 years as the sponsor and won't really connect with the fans or understand the sport. Kroger would, in my opinion, be the best fit, as they could connect with the fans at the track really well, they've been around for a LONG time, and wouldn't really be endangering any other sponsor (Target possibly, though now that they're out of IndyCar, something tells me it won't be long before they're out anyways). 814. There is no one to compare Casey Mears to so I have to ignore those years. It's impossible to tell how good the equipment actually was. The years I can compare are Ganassi, Childress, Hendrick, and Germain (I know I'm contradicting myself but there is a reason) when they had an RCR alliance because Germain spent MORE money then title contenders Furniture Row and Mears did NOTHING. Germain was getting info from RCR JTG and Furniture Row weren't sniffing. Sterling Marlin was never the same after his 2002 injury plus he was washed up because of his age, 2 things Mears didn't have against him. Drivers rapidly start to lose their ability starting at age 40. It's shocking how quick. Mark Martin and Matt Kenseth are the exception. Anyways I don't think it is fair to compare Marlin to Mears because of the 2 things I mentioned before. 2002: Mears 35, McMurray 13 2003: Mears 22, McMurray 11 2004: Mears 22, McMurray 12 2005 was the one good year Mears had. chevyfan what you are forgetting about his Hendrick run compared to Vickers is that Mears was with the team when Hendrick was dominating NASCAR. They were winning everything. They won half the races in 2007 and Mears had the one fluke win where Kyle Petty finished 3rd and JJ Yeley 2nd. In 2007 Gordon had an average finish 11.6 positions better. Jimmie Johnson had 10 wins. They finished 1st,2nd, and 5th in points compared to Mears 15th. In 2008 he finished 20th, during the Hendrick dominance NASCAR era. Vickers wasn't with Hendrick during the Hendrick complete dominance era. Ignoring the worst driver ever to win a race debate, there is no reason that Mears should have a full time ride. What other sport would give Mears a full time ride? The only one is a sport with ride buyers. Hello Geigo commercials. 815. John G posted: 08.03.2016 - 6:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Get well soon webmaster. That is horrible news. 816. Yum!Brands - Issue is you are dealing multiple fast food chains here and this would lock out a good amount of Sponsors for NASCAR Teams. Kicking out Mcdonald's out of NASCAR is a bad move. 4.) Samsung 3.) Hisense 2.) Coca Cola - NASCAR teams has Pepsi and Dr. Pepper Sponsorships and that would hurt 1.) Kroger - There is no issue here because of the nature the business is one that I don't see any other Grocery store chain want to get involved in racing a first place. 818. Sprouts sponsored Cole Whitt in a race last year, and Winn-Dixie sponsored Sam Hornish in a few races. Plus, if race sponsorships count, you have Food City at Bristol and Save Mart at Sonoma, and Stater Brothers on the Xfinity race at Fontana. "Won't bother me since Target is going to leave anyway." Since when? Also, I doubt it would affect Target, since Target doesn't really consider itself a grocery store. Albertsons, though, would have a problem, since they are a grocery company. 821. They may say "Yeah we will sponsor you're series if you get rid of that damn Chase and go back to a season-long championship" I think this is something really that they could do. Plus Coca-Cola is the third most valuable brand in the world. Also you have the tie in with McDonald's and I don't think they would push Pepsi out I don't think it would be in their best interest they know they're better than them and frankly I don't think they'll care if Pepsi is in the series or not. Mears and Menard would both be in my bottom ten, and one of them (more likely Mears) would likely make my bottom five. I think it's still Sacks though. His 1985 car was blatantly illegal, and I've read his 1990 spring Talladega car (which he also won the pole with at Daytona) was also illegal. Sacks had another second place in the #17 at Michigan, which looks like the only legitimate great finish he had... "Brett Bodine probably deserves some talk as well since he literally only won because of a Nascar scoring snafu." Farcical win aside, he did have a fairly surprising amount of speed on the short tracks his first few years in the #26 from 1990-92, so I wouldn't call him the worst either, but he has a strong case for bottom five, and stronger than Spencer and M.
