Man, I remember when Ryan Newman set the track record with a 14.90 in 2003, and that stood for, like, 10 years. The story of the weekend is the bottom groove of the track, which had made its return as the preferred groove after track folks laid down a VHT traction compound a week prior to the race, in hopes of adding grip so drivers would run down there. So far, it seems to have worked, as drivers have consistently been running on the bottom. The good news is that while the "old" Bristol seems back, at least the upper grooves still seem workable with some speed, so a driver can run up there if they choose. 3. He will not be racing next week at M.I.S., where either Dale Earnhardt, Jr. will return or Alex Bowman will again fill in. Gordon's fittingly has the AXALTA paint scheme for this race and turned in his best qualifying run of the season. 4. 1995z71 posted: 08.19.2016 - 9:58 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Glad to see 3 Rookie in the Top 12 starting spots. 5. Dropping to the rear of the field became a non-issue because he was 40th fastest in qualifying anyhow. Tough break for a team that is working on a shoestring budget, though. 12. Not surprised, if Roush can get them in the Chase then he might as well try. 13. Stretch posted: 08.20.2016 - 9:14 am Rate this comment: (0) (3) Hot Damn! Blaney is in the top 5, Dinger and Buescher in the top 15. And Danica is a complete waste of space again; has great equipment still qualifies 29th. Looks like it will be another standard race for her - qualify poorly, only passes she makes are due to attrition, say it was a great race for the team while finishing sub-20th. 14. Sector posted: 08.20.2016 - 10:09 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Damn if this is Jeff Gordon's last race, too bad he's a spot short of qualifying in the top 10. I really wish he didn't participate here, he should have stopped at 800 starts, but this is the reality, he's making his 801st start here. I expect Kyle Busch to be dominate. I have a hunch about it. As for Chris Buescher, wow. I can tell you right now, they probably wouldn't have made the final round of qualifying if it weren't for that win. They must be hungry for that Chase spot. Imagine if they actually PULLED off the greatest upset in NASCAR history and win this championship. LMAO Boy would this would be a wild offseason. I still think the championship would go to Edwards vs Truex this season, though. 15. Clauson previously ran a paint scheme like this one in the NASCAR Nationwide series back in 2008, his last season racing in NASCAR before returning to the open-wheel ranks. 16. racefangurl posted: 08.20.2016 - 11:47 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 14, 2 of 3 of the real Rouskateers need wins to make the Chase. The third, at 16th in points realistically join them if Chris Buescher reaches the top-30, due to the gap between Kyle Larson and his teammate, Jamie McMurray. Last year, the Roush drivers didn't have a shot at the Chase due to being out of the range to make it points and not having the speed to win. This year, the team has more good finishes than last year, so maybe one of them could get a win at a track handling doesn't come into play at. Though they're faster, they say the handling still isn't good. 17. racefangurl posted: 08.20.2016 - 11:48 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) *will join. 18. If ROUSH was helping him, wouldn't he have qualified much worse (just looking at where the 3 Roush cars qualified?) Nah, I think he was getting assistance from Penske, the only Ford team worth anything... Or is Buescher THAT much better than Stenhouse, Biffle, and Bayne at this point? I suppose it's possible. 19. chevyfan98 posted: 08.20.2016 - 1:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Nah, I think he was getting assistance from Penske, the only Ford team worth anything... I can't see him getting any help from Penske considering he's under contract with Roush. 20. racefangurl posted: 08.20.2016 - 2:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 18 and 19, I think it's a combo. Roush upped their assistance and Chris could very easily be better than say, Biffle. However, Roush drivers say the speed has improved, so it's safe to say Roush isn't as bad as 2014-2015. Maybe a bit like 2013, the last previous year they had speed. The true Roushskateers run better than last year, so maybe Roush is helping Front Row. 21. Stenhouse and Bayne have looked a lot better this year (especially Bayne, who will probably make the Chase on points), but ever since Buescher outran those two multiple times in the #34 LAST year I've pretty much had my mind made up that he's WAY better than them (and Biffle, who's just washed up at this point). Not to mention that Buescher did way more than Bayne in NXS and accomplished about half of what Stenhouse did (in only two years) despite Roush's NXS program being worse than it was when Stenhouse and Bayne were primarily there... I hope what Alex is saying is in fact the case, because if Trevor can make the Chase on points with these cars, then I really think Buescher can surprise some people here for the rest of the season. 24. HScott Motorsports brought back their former Cup racer Justin Allgaier, a NASCAR Xfinity series regular in 2016, to take the wheel in his place. Allgaier's #46 Chevy has a special paint job this week to promote the Pilot Flying J Battle of Bristol college football game coming up at Bristol next month between Tennessee and Virginia Tech. This is easily Justin's best track, his only cup top ten is here, he had a great run going in the 2014 night race and got a solid top 15 last August as well. That is only by Trevor Bayne doing better than Kyle Larson (Pretty comfortable with Ryan Newman, Chase Elliott, Austin Dillon and Jamie McMurray making it in) tonight and the remaining 3 races before the Chase AND Chris Buescher doesn't pass David Ragan for 30th in points in time, which I believe he will, making Jamie McMurray holding the final spot for the Chase instead of Kyle Larson. I also feel confident that Buescher will reach the top 30, and right now Larson is 30 behind McMurray, 39 behind Dillon, and 41 behind Elliott. If Elliott's dry spell continues the next 4 weeks, he could easily be out. Dillon and McMurray have been running much better so if they avoid trouble they should be good. However, Larson has been fast and if he can finish, he could easily pass them all. We will find out 3 weeks from now. 34. Basing the weather at the track based off a weather app of Bristol tn is inaccurate at best. Just let people tune in at 1. If they're racing well know the rain isn't that bad. Bristol is too high banked, too fast, and too hard on tires for that to work. The rain tire tread would gone in just a few laps and they'd be sliding everywhere. Jolly Mean Giant posted: 08.21.2016 - 8:27 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Got to see most of the race at work...and let me say first and foremost, after ALL the rain delays that kept pushing this race back and stopping it dead in its tracks...I think we should all be glad they actually succeeded in getting the race in today, finally. Mother Nature did make a brief return, but it was only a brief pop-up shower, which quickly went away and they were able to complete the event. Feels good to get a rain-delayed race off the calendar, doesn't it? As for the race itself...it seemed to follow the last few night races here-fairly uneventful for the first half/two-thirds. Through the first 350 laps the only real significant incidents were Newman and Stewart popping the wall and Larson almost spinning out. Then Kyle Busch had his problems...and that's where everything got pretty jumbled up! Kyle definitely had the dominant car today, leading a full half the race, but ultimately wound up crashing out at Bristol for the second race in a row when a mechanical failure sent him around. Though I am no Kyle fan I can certainly understand his frustration at Allgaier...what the heck happened there? Kyle's car was just sitting stopped there at the bottom of the track and the #46 only managed to swerve at the last second. Had he not that would've been a heavy head-on impact, but he still wound up totaling both cars. Where was the spotter on that one? Surprising to think he's now failed to finish 3 of his last 4 races at one of his very best tracks (that also makes it 4 out of the last 5 Bristol races the #18 has crashed in, David Ragan wrecked in the spring race last year substituting for Kyle). And then Kurt Busch went around. Man, I knew the moment the leader went around in front of the whole field, things were gonna get ugly...had Brad not nailed him as he came down the track the #41 would've taken a hard shot into the inside wall. Not surprising to see other cars get collected; bummer for Blaney because he was having such a great run most of this race and really did NOT need this for his Chase chances. Must say though-Kurt really seems to have matured a LOT as of late. I remember in one race earlier this year (first Bristol race, I think?) he was really happy and appreciative of his crew for helping him get a top 5, and after the Daytona race where Logano spun him on the last lap, he not only gave an interview afterwards, but not come off sounding exceptionally butthurt about it-disappointed, but not REALLY angry. Noticed the same in his interview today, he was clearly disappointed but took responsibility for the crash by saying the car just got away from him. It took long enough, but methinks Kurt has FINALLY grown up...now if only Kyle can undergo the same maturation... 629. One car from each organization finished on the lead lap while the other finished 3 laps down. I don't think the efforts to bring back the bottom groove TOTALLY succeeded, but the bottom groove was definitely not completely hopeless today-you COULD make passes down there if you tried hard enough. Maybe it would've helped more if there hadn't been so much rain...can't really say. But overall, some good hard racing, some chaos and carnage...Yep, seems like a pretty typical Bristol race. Minus all the weather delays that ended up making this race a (mostly) day race that ended at dusk! Thought the dual burnouts with Harvick and Stewart were pretty cool...man, Tony's been really racking up the memorable moments in his last year, hasn't he? Win at Sears Point by moving Hamlin out the way, the victory lap with Gordon at the Brickyard, and now this. Stenhouse finishing second was pretty cool, too. Should've picked him for the fantasy league since he almost always finishes well here, but for whatever reason I opted not to...Really cool to see the Bryan Clauson tribute scheme get a great run today especially after falling behind early in the race. I'm sure Clauson, wherever he may be now, really appreciated getting to see that. And how about BUESCHER?! Man, that Roush support really paid dividends for him today. Made the final round, stayed in the top 20 all race long, ran as high as fourth, and got a top 5. Now that he's cleared 30th and has full-on Roush support, I could actually see him going far, scoring more top 10s, and actually potentially surviving the first round of the Chase. Don't think he'll beat Elliott for RotY barring something wacky, but it's great to see him doing well right now. Like I've said before, I think this kid definitely has some potential to be quite successful in Cup down the road... And Jeff Gordon just misses the top 10 in what could potentially be his final hurrah. I guess considering how much success he's had at this track (won 4 straight spring races in the late '90s) Bristol would be a fairly fitting place for his last start (outside of Atlanta, maybe, where he made his first). It was nice seeing him back for four races and he showed that even after being out of the cockpit for 8 months, he could still run competitively. Hendrick's still got some work to do, though... Overall, another fun Bristol event, and like I said, it feels good to finally cross this one off the calendar after all the weather delays! Onwards to Michigan... 634. I say that because I think he'll just be taking up a spot that someone else could use, perhaps Kyle Larson? I personally would like to see Ryan Blaney make it, but I admit he'll too just be taking up a spot, as the Wood Bros. aren't quite as competitive just yet to do it. Now, to play the devil's advocate, if Buescher does make it, I think he could make it past the first round. Otherwise, Kevin has won at Bristol before for his lone win back in 2005. Michigan isn't a much a driver track as Bristol, Darlington and Richmond. However, maybe just maybe, Chris can hold his spot. Congrats to Kevin Harvick for his win. But I don't really care about that as much as I care about CHRIS BUESCHER. HOW did he do that? He was running around 15th to 20th most of the day, and then he runs around fifth in the final 150 laps? Amazing job by him. The FRM cars seem to run better at short tracks, Ragan finished in the top 10 at Martinsville once. In fact, LOTS of midpack guys had great days today, like Stenhouse. Why do short tracks always lead to upsets? This puts Buescher in the chase for now. As much as I feel happy for him, this shows the problem with the Chase grid, as a 30th place guy with only 2 top 10s is now in position to finish 15th or so, when he clearly hasn't been doing well enough to deserve it. 676. Ragan is currently 13 points behind Buescher in 31st (which is really 14, when you consider any potential tie-breaker), with Regan Smith another 22 points behind in 32nd. If Chris Buescher finishes 30th in the next three races, Michigan, Darlington, and Richmond, that means that Ragan will have to finish, on average, five positions ahead of Buescher, meaning he'll have to finish 25th or better, and I don't give him a real good chance of doing that, given the organization he's with. The thing one has to wonder about is whether one of the teams with drivers on the bubble, like Ganassi (both drivers), Childress (Dillon and/or Newman) might have his drivers race Buescher a little harder, knowing that if that results in a crash, it could open up an extra Chase slot, and Childress has a documented history of fabrically altering the race at Richmond (remember what happened in 2011 with Paul Menard?), and Ganassi tried to do something like that way back in 2004 or '05 to get Jamie McMurray into the Chase. And even Hendrick Motorsports has to be sweating bullets regarding Chase Elliott, though they seemed to have been the victims of prior shenanigans, rather than the orchestrators. And with Dale, Jr. out of the running and Kasey Kahne horribly disappointing, Chase Elliott is HMS' only shot to get a second car in the Chase. The one team that's REALLY in an awkward spot is Roush. At the moment, Trevor Bayne, perhaps the most overlooked driver in the entire sport, has his flagship #6 car as the first out of the Chase, but also has one of his developmental drivers, Chris Buescher, actually IN the Chase, so it's highly doubtful Roush would try to pull something, given he can't lose either way. (And I still think Buescher might end up in either the #16 or #17 car for Roush next year, despite what's being said.) But given their histories, Childress and Ganassi might try anything to ensure they each get two cars in the Chase, because they've already proven they'll rig the end of races to ensure their teams a better shot. And given that there doesn't figure to be any more new winners prior to the start of the Chase, it appears that you have those top 11 winners locked in, Chris Buescher battling for the 12th spot, and the battle for those bubble positions, which don't figure to change unless something very odd happens (there's a full race worth of points separating the last in and the first out), or Chris Buescher gets knocked out of the top 30, which doesn't seem likely at this time, given that there's no tangible threat from Ragan or Smith. One race that may settle all this is the Southern 500, which can be a war of attrition. That's a race where a team that usually runs at, or near the back, like BK Racing, can have a decent finish just by having a trouble-free race, while those that figure to run up front could have trouble and change this entire thing around. I think that, one way or another, the Chase grid may be decided, not after the last race before the chase in Richmond, but rather the Southern 500 the week before. 682. Wallace was driving for Phoenix Racing and ended up two spots ahead of McMurray (Wallace was seventh, while McMurray finished ninth). McMurray ended up missing the Chase by 15 points, or three or four using today's one point per position system. Had McMurray finished fifth, instead of ninth, he would have made the Chase in 2004. 685. While Short tracks doe have unlikely names in the top 10, there rarely are unlikely winners at the three tracks compare to Restrictor plate racing. Restrictor plate racing actually is capable of having any driver in the field to win and you can't say that with any other type of track that is on a cup schedule. 686. racefangurl posted: 08.22.2016 - 7:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 681, I could see Biffle leave Roush after his contract runs out and Chris replacing him in the 16. Although having a team car drop back isn't exactly fair play, it's probably better than intentionally bringing out a caution, because that changes the entire races instead of a few positions. 688. cjs3872 posted: 08.22.2016 - 9:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Depends on what you would classify as an unlikely winner, Eric (#685). Because of their unpredictability, short tracks and other tracks with narrow grooves, such as Darlington, can produce unlikely winners because if something happens just in front of the leaders, they could get caught up in it, allowing for someone nobody thinks of to emerge. Terry Labonte's first win came under just those kind of circumstances. And because of the narrowness of the racing groove at a place like Darlington or a short track, the possibility of contact among the leaders could also produce an unlikely result. Kyle Petty's maiden Cup series win at Richmond in 1986 is a case of that. If any of the three remaining races prior to the Chase is to have an unlikely winner, the Southern 500 at Darlington is the most likely race of the three to have that happen because of the grueling aspect of the race, the narrow groove, and the possibility of the strange happening. This race at Bristol is a classic case of that. Just look at the top five finishers and the way the race went during the second half of the event. In a span of 15 laps, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex, Jr., Kyle Larson, Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski, and Matt Kenseth, any of whom could easily have won this race, and none of whom would have been considered a surprise winner, had their hopes end in crashes. Of course, this made it so that Kevin Harvick had no serious competition for most of the rest of the race, but what it also did was to put drivers among the leaders that had cars that would not normally have been able to run with the leaders. Ricky Stenhouse, Jr,. Austin Dillon, Chris Buescher, and for a time, Trevor Bayne and Greg Biffle, all ran with the leaders briefly after all those favorites I mentioned had their nights end with torn-up cars. Of the three remaining races prior to the Chase, only Darlington has the capacity to provide this much uncertainty, if for no other reason that it's the track where big wrecks most likely would occur. Michigan tends to get spread out and while there certainly is the possibility for a lot of contact at Richmond, the chances of multi-car wrecks happening there are pretty small, and the most likely thing that could cause a major shake-up in the points now is a multi-car wreck, given the distance between 14th and 15th in points (a full race worth of points), which currently is the Chase cut-off. If the difference between 14th and 15th in points is anywhere near what it is after the Southern 500, and if Chris Buescher has anything resembling a comfortable lead over 31st in the points standings, then I'd say that the Chase grid will have been set BEFORE the race at Richmond. But the only drama that remains, as to who gets in the Chase, is whether or not Buescher can stay 30th in points, and I'd rate that a very likely possibility, if not a probability. But if Chris Buescher does have problems and drops out of the top 30, Kyle Larson gets in. 689. Late in that race in 1998, even Ned Jarrett, who won the race in 1965 and Benny Parsons, who never won that race in 20 attempts, were amazed that Gordon was winning what many consider the toughest race on the NASCAR circuit four consecutive years, an opinion that Darrell Waltrip, who needed 19 attempts and a rain-shortened race to finally win his only Southern 500 in 1992 (which was his final victory), shared in an interview in that season's finale at Atlanta. So it would be fitting if the Southern 500 ended up being Jeff Gordon's final race, but for some reason, I find that to be very doubtful because of the situation regarding Dale, Jr.'s health. 696. oldschoolracing519 posted: 08.25.2016 - 12:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) didnt Dave Stockman takeover crew chief duties for the #27 starting at the last Pocono race? watching the race broadcast for Bristol and they are talking about it again. but yet I see Justin Alexander listed still for all 3 races 697. Also don't be surprised if Chase Elliott wins as Michigan, as he was very strong there last time with this rules package. Buescher finished 20th at Michigan and 34th at Richmond earlier this season, while he has never raced at Darlington. Ragan finished 22nd at his last Michigan, 23rd at Richmond and 40th at his last Darlington race. That would be 28 points for Buescher vs. 38 for Ragan, and that could cover the gap.
