Maybe this is the race where they turn their bad luck around. 2. Newman31 posted: 08.26.2016 - 7:19 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) This may be the race where Austin Dillon gets his first cup win. 3. She had the car for a 35.9 but ran too many laps on the tires. She should be in line for a top 15 this week. 4. 1995z71 posted: 08.26.2016 - 7:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sam Hornish, Jr. practices & qualifies 35th while filling in for Michael McDowell who is pulling double duty this weekend. 5. 1995z71 posted: 08.26.2016 - 7:43 pm Rate this comment: (3) (1) Also while I loved seeing Jeff Gordon come back, I'm happier seeing a young buck like Alex Bowman get another shot in A+ equipment. 6. chevyfan98 posted: 08.26.2016 - 7:51 pm Rate this comment: (2) (1) Wow, where did all this Hendrick speed suddenly come from? Even Kahne made the final round. And Bowman sixth! Hopefully it translates to race day (probably will, the Hendrick cars usually run better than they practice/qualify). Maybe this could be the week Chase gets win #1. With Jr still out he's my main guy for the time being so I'll be pulling for him, though I probably won't be able to watch (TV in my dorm room doesn't work and I don't know if any of the TVs around campus will be showing the race). "Bad luck for Danica not being a little bit faster in Session 1" Not being fast enough isn't bad luck. 7. The number one pit stall in the June race basically allowed him to control and dominate on the restarts all day, so I expect we'll see the same here since he's on the pole again. This should be a real fun race with all the young guys though. I think Chase and Larson will challenge again like they did in June, and Blaney and I think even Buescher (finished 20th in June) have great shots of being right up there as well. Not to mention Alex Bowman, who in only one full race and an additional qualifying session has looked great in this #88 car (way better than Gordon, who I really hope steps up to Hendrick and makes Darlington his last race - to me he CLEARLY doesn't want to be doing this and is only running all these races just because he's too nice and loyal to tell Rick no - so I hope either that happens or Dale Jr is well enough to come back at Richmond - plus, Gordon running his last ever race in the Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend just seems right for a lot of reasons). 11. Blue Palaski posted: 08.27.2016 - 12:01 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Good for Bowman hopefully he can finish as strong. If he does maybe JRM runs a third car in XFS for him? Maybe Hendrick restarts their XFS program so they don't lose him? Another good qualifying effort for Blaney, maybe the bad juju following the team will stay away this week. 12. racefangurl posted: 08.27.2016 - 12:52 am Rate this comment: (0) (2) This is historically a Ford track, so not surprised to see a Ford on the pole. Speaking of Fords, Ricky didn't out qualify his girlfriend. However, he might pass her on track because she can't race. I imagine all of Roush, except maybe Biffle, will outperform her on race day. However, if Wrecky shows up, she might or might not have better results than his. He's Ricky when he finishes and Wrecky when he crashes out. 13. Maybe Hendrick restarts their XFS program so they don't lose him?" Hate to be that guy, but there's probably zero chance Bowman runs full time i9n the Xfinity Series for JRM next year. Sadler and Byron are already coming back and I assume unless he brings his sponsor back to the Cup series Allgaier will be back too. The 88 car won't be full time next year by the sound of it so it wouldn't shock me if Bowman was out of a Xfinity ride all together at JRM. As for Rick restarting an Xfinity team I don't know he can since he owns part of JRM. Honestly the best case scenario for Bowman in terms of staying in a HMS/JRM ride would be if he got their truck ride after Custer leaves assuming Jr keeps it open. 14. chevyfan98 posted: 08.27.2016 - 2:24 am Rate this comment: (2) (2) ^Don't think I got the chance to chime in on it when the news broke out since I was busy moving into my dorm that day (probably a good thing too, since between that, hearing Jr would be out two more weeks, and having to say goodbye to my family, I was NOT in a good mood), but this is the exact reason I don't like Sadler and OneMain coming back. We know what Elliott is capable of. Maybe a win a year, runs 5-10th most races, and might contend for the championship. Okay, that doesn't sound bad at all, right? Wrong. Sadler's best days are over a decade behind him. When he moved down to the then Nationwide series over five years ago the goal was for him to be back in cup full-time someday. That ship sailed a long time ago. But Alex Bowman and Josh Berry? They're just getting started, and who knows what their potential might be? Maybe they could even win a championship, happened in 2014 with Chase Elliott. Much rather see one of them get a chance than someone who we know what to expect from like Sadler. Of course, this is all just me being ideal because money talks. But a man can dream... 15. joey2448 posted: 08.27.2016 - 7:44 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "plus, Gordon running his last ever race in the Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend just seems right for a lot of reasons." And in the "Gray Ghost" paint scheme made famous by Buddy Baker in his record-breaking Daytona 500 win, no less. Baker took and still has the speed record for the 500 with 177.602 mph in 1980, driving the famous gray-and-black Oldsmobile owned by Harry Ranier. As an interesting sidenote, Baker qualified in and nearly started the Talladega summer race in 1993 driving another Hendrick car painted almost identical to Gordon's car in rainbow colors, with No. 46 adorning the side. Now, Gordon will get to drive a Baker-inspired car at the Southern 500. 16. He's past 40, so even without this head injury stuff, he could retire after his contract runs out. And on 10, if we have to have a repeat winner, I pick Joey. I'd really rather see a 2016 first-timer. Either somebody like Chase Elliott or somebody that won in a previous year, but not yet this year. 19. Danica10Racer posted: 08.27.2016 - 1:34 pm Rate this comment: (1) (3) @12. There is almost no chance that Ricky finishes ahead of Danica, at one of her best tracks. She's going to come home with a top 15 finish unless bad luck strikes here again, as it did in qualifying. 20. BMan0213 posted: 08.27.2016 - 1:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @14 I get what you're saying but it isn't like Sadler is really taking a ride from Bowman. Sadler's sponsorship is what keeps that team going. If One Main didn't come back JRM would probably just be running 2 full time cars next year. Hopefully Bowman can have a good run this weekend and use that to build something for next year, preferably that JRM truck ride because he really does deserve a full time ride in something. 21. Sean posted: 08.27.2016 - 2:18 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) Sadler lost me a while ago and I am tired of Xfinity being something of a home for ex-Cup drivers who were in Cup when it was more popular like Sadler and Gaughan solely because the fame they accumulated in that period when NASCAR was at or near its ratings peak allows them to be more marketable and obtain more sponsors. However, this aspect isn't as bad as it was about 3 or 4 years ago and there does seem to be more real talent emerging than there was then. Even though the general trend of marketing past results over developing future talent annoys me, you don't fire the points leader, who will probably still be the points leader entering the chase. Even if he loses the title, you don't fire the regular season points leader entering the chase just for being too "old". Joe Ruttman was a lot older in 1998 and I was still pretty upset when Roush ditched him after that season when he finished 3rd in points. Old and uncompetitive would be a reason to fire someone, but it's the uncompetitive that should make the difference here, and Sadler has not been uncompetitive, especially leading the points by quite a bit when the JGR cars are much faster. 22. Maverick posted: 08.27.2016 - 2:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) "Much rather see one of them get a chance than someone who we know what to expect from like Sadler." You're right, we know to expect from Sadler. Potentially a championship. 23. Sean posted: 08.27.2016 - 2:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) And right, just firing Sadler would lose the sponsor too, and as much as I want to see drivers like Bowman, Kligerman, Moffitt, and James Buescher with some sort of full-time ride, ditching Sadler doesn't CREATE a ride for any of those people, who would certainly be riskier gambles and might not do as well anyway. I guess those four need to work on finding sponsorships. James might have an easier time of it after Chris's Cup win, and also considering he's already a truck champion, but it seems like he's left to work in the housing industry and his career may be over. That would be a shame. 24. chevyfan98 posted: 08.27.2016 - 2:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "You're right, we know to expect from Sadler. Potentially a championship." This is his sixth year in the series with four different teams (five actually if you count KHI and RCR as two different teams) and he hasn't won one yet. And if he doesn't this year I doubt he will. Isn't getting any younger, and the Xfinity series can't stay this uncompetitive forever. Some of the young guns in the truck series will undoubtedly move up (we know Byron is next year, and I can easily see him having a Chase Elliott in 2014 type year). 25. murb posted: 08.27.2016 - 2:47 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I'm not a fan of Sadler coming back either (and I can't EVER remember a sponsor changing their mind like this after initially announcing they were leaving the sport), but I actually do think he'll probably have his best shot at an NXS title this year (or at least his best since 2012 where he almost won it) just because the NXS Chase is gonna be all about points racing most likely since Cup guys will be winning all the races (maybe with Jones and potentially Suarez nabbing a couple as well). When it comes down to points racing he's obviously been the best all year up to this point. On the plus side for Alex Bowman, I was reading this thing about how he apparently is working as like a simulation test driver or something for Hendrick right now (that's what he meant by "it sucks having a day job" in his interview yesterday, I guess), so it really does seem like Hendrick is taking care of him. Now that Byron is locked into a full time ride, I imagine Bowman is probably the next young guy on their totem pole and will at the very least be driving SOME type of Hendrick equipment next year (I agree the JRM truck that Custer is vacating would be cool - though I doubt they'll continue it full time next year, but Bowman could probably contend hard for a championship in that thing given his experience over most of the other Truck youngsters). 26. Blue Palaski posted: 08.27.2016 - 3:01 pm Rate this comment: (5) (0) "She's going to come home with a top 15 finish unless bad luck strikes here again" Not going to happen, Danica has been horrible at her "better" tracks this year, and Ricky has been more hit than miss the last 5-6 races. 27. MJM posted: 08.27.2016 - 8:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I love it that some Joey Logano fans are so quick at exclaiming "Michigan Sweep" for this year after winning pole yesterday, but I wouldn't put it down as a guarantee. A sweep at Michigan by one driver (according to past race winners of each season) is actually pretty rare if already done in a season (even more so than Pocono, and that is a tougher race track to race on). There have been none so far this century. However, he has a very good chance to get the sweep tomorrow. However, there are also other drivers who could keep the Michigan sweep drought alive like Jimmie Johnson (who is starting 2nd) and Kevin Harvick (last week's winner at Bristol. Heck, even his teammate Brad Keselowski could spoil Logano's sweep chances (while making it a Penske sweep instead) 28. dennyfan11 posted: 08.28.2016 - 9:06 am Rate this comment: (0) (2) Raining at the track right now. 29. dennyfan11 posted: 08.28.2016 - 9:08 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Thankfully, calling for a 90% chance of racing. 30. dennyfan11 posted: 08.28.2016 - 9:19 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Rain has stopped. 31. I'd have to go with Newman based on his past performances in the fall Richmond race when he's on the chase cutoff (drove on another level in 2012 and 2013) but I wouldn't count out McMurray either. As far as I could tell, there were only 3 weekends prior to this one when Busch/Nationwide/Xfinity and Cup had 1st time winners, but there were no 1st time truck winners those weekends: 2005 - Carl Edwards won his first Busch and Cup races at Atlanta in the same weekend. 2007 - Aric Almirola won at Milwaukee and Juan Pablo Montoya won at Sonoma. 2009 - David Ragan won the Nationwide race at Talladega and Brad Keselowski won the Cup race. This is actually the first first-time win on an unrestricted oval where the leader passed the driver who was previously controlling the race on track since CLINT BOWYER IN 2007. Keselowski inherited the lead as a result of his contact at Talladega. Reutimann won after the leaders pitted during a race-ending caution. Logano won on fuel mileage during a rain delay. Bayne inherited the lead after Ragan got penalized for switching lanes. Smith stayed out of the win and just wasn't passed. Ragan did pass Kenseth on track, but still fairly cheap due to the tandem drafting 'switches.' Menard did take the lead on track but he was clearly off pit-sequence. Ambrose and Allmendinger won on road courses. Almirola won a plate race after all his competition was taken out except Kurt Busch basically. Buescher won by staying out of the pits before the rains came. So this is actually the first time in almost 9 years that a normal, everyday race was won by a first-time winner via an on-track pass. Now, you can make the argument that RCR is considered "better" than all these teams (except maybe FRR, esp. after their alliance with JGR) and for them to remain winless in almost 100 races is astounding to me. And with that, I honestly don't see them winning anytime soon -- I believe Newman to have a better shot than Dillon at this point. The only way I can see them beating a JGR/Hendrick/SHR/Furniture Row/Penske team as of this point is on a superspeedway or in a gas mileage/rain delay race. However, the one driver that was capable of upsetting that whole apple cart always figured to be Kyle Larson, given how well he runs on the big tracks, and given that Chip Ganassi has always seemed to run well at Michigan. After all, this win by Larson came on the 15th anniversary of Ganassi's first NASCAR win as an owner, which came in this very race with Sterling Marlin in 2001, when Ganassi's outfit made Marlin a legitimate championship contender before his neck injury in 2002. In fact, for a while it appeared as this race might end the same way Marlin's win in this race in 2001 did, in the rain, but the rain held off. The odd thing about this race was that, for the first time I can ever remember, three of the top four finishers in a Cup race were winless in the Cup Series entering that race, as Larson, Chase Elliott, and Ryan Blaney all entered this race without a win. Looking at the race to the Chase, two things became clear. the first is that, even with a bad day, Chris Buescher is still in a solid position, mainly because of who he's racing for that 30th spot in points, David Ragan and the BK Racing outfit, who didn't fare much better. However, another bad race for the #34 team, who have never raced under this kind of spotlight in the past, and even the BK Racing #23 may gain the eight points necessary to pull ahead of Buescher, thus opening up a spot at the bottom of the Chase Grid. If that doesn't happen, what Larson's win means is that there are now four drivers racing for three spots, and none of those drivers, not even Chase Elliott, who has a solid lead over Ryan Newman, are safe. But aside from Buescher, who would get in if Ragan can't score more than nine points in the next two races, no matter what he does (Buescher's guaranteed at least two points), the four drivers racing for the three remaining Chase spots are Elliott, Jamie McMurray, Larson's teammate, and Austin Dillon and Ryan Newman, the two RCR drivers. There's too big of a point gap for the others who don't have the speed or performance to win a race, such as Kasey Kahne or Trevor Bayne. The upshot from Larson's win is that it could very well knock his own teammate, Jamie McMurray, who has a history of flopping in the race at Richmond when he needs a good run, out of the Chase. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that Buescher gets in (he may not even have to do anything, depending on what David Ragan does, as Buescher gets in if Ragan doesn't score more than nine total points if Buescher finishes last in the next two races), and either McMurray or Dillon gets left out. I think Ryan Newman finds a way to race his way in. 378. Also, he doesn't need to lead a lap to make the Chase, he just needs to finish ahead of Newman in points. And overall I disagree about the killer instinct. Yes, he's a very confidence based driver, but usually in the clutch he comes out on top, evidenced by wins in the 500, Brickyard 400, All-Star race, etc. The only clutch battles that he lost off the top of my head were the races to get in the 2004 & 2005 Chases, and he only lost those because he went down a cylinder towards the end of the 2004 race, and he was wrecked in 2005. 379. joey2448 posted: 08.28.2016 - 6:28 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Larson led a race-high 41 laps, but SIX guys led a double-digit number of laps. And he finished 9th in 2004 (the year he had 23 top tens, more than the champion Kurt Busch) but missed out on the Chase because he had a couple of blown motors and mechanical problems in the Summer. I've always been so annoyed at all this "McMurray flops trying to make the Chase" stuff that's been going on for the past decade plus. Usually HE runs fine at Richmond (I said it earlier, but he's finished no worse than 16th in his last five combined Richmond races - and in the past three Fall races he has two 4th place finishes), but circumstances, whether it's someone else's wrecks at Richmond or problems in the previous races leading up to Richmond, have always bitten him. 381. And Menard at Indy doesn't count because he was off strategy? And Smith at Darlington doesn't count because it was a pit call?" I wasn't saying any of the wins weren't legitimate. It's more about whether those wins indicate that a driver 'made it' to the point that they will become a major threat on the entire schedule. This is following in the tradition of Red who used to post here in 2009-12, who used a similar argument based on whether drivers had truly 'arrived', and he was critical of most of the 2011 first-time wins because he didn't think that the nature of any of those wins meant that those drivers would be regular contenders in the future. Ambrose and Allmendinger's wins were certainly legitimate but simply dominating on a road course does not mean you will be relevant on an oval. Since Cup only has 2 road course races, they're basically an island to themselves, so you need to prove relevance on ovals to be a general weekly threat, and Ambrose and Allmendinger never really proved that to me (yes, Keselowski and Logano did, but that doesn't change the nature of their first wins.) Plate tracks are also basically an island to themselves. You can't use those races to predict the rest of the races on the schedule. As for Smith and Menard, they did a good job maintaining the lead after their pit strategists put them there, but you didn't get the sense that they had arrived or they would start dominating. Look how critical many of us were even about Keselowski and Logano for a year or two after their initial wins because of the nature of their early wins. It's not so much saying any of those drivers didn't deserve to win, but that the nature of their wins didn't really show superstar potential over the entire schedule. I would say Keselowski entered legit superstardom with his Pocono 2011 win, and Logano with his duel at Fontana with Hamlin in 2013 (even though he lost the race.) None of those other drivers really did. That is the point I was making. Bowyer was the last driver who won a first-time win where you really believed that they could start dominating week-in, week-out, and not just on a handful of tracks (like plate tracks or road courses...) 382. Ganassi's team never has been known as one of the elite outfits in the sport, and is probably the reason today's win at Michigan was the first for Kyle Larson, instead of about the sixth or seventh. And it's for that reason why I think that Ryan Newman will race his way in, barring problems at Darlington, and why I think it will be between McMurray and Austin Dillon for that final spot, barring a collapse by the #34 team and at least one strong run by the #23 team. And if I had to choose between McMurray's experience behind the wheel or RCR's overall better organization, it would be hard to pick between the two, though I would lead toward Richard Childress Racing's stronger team than Jamie McMurray's stronger cars and greater experience. However, if Ryan Newman has a bad race in the Southern 500 next week and falls 20+ points behind the last spot in the Chase and Buescher gets in a safer situation (and I think he'll be safe if he finishes ahead if David Ragan next week), all this becomes moot and the Chase field could be set next week. Of course, if the opposite happens, and Chase Elliott and Austin Dillon have problems next week, then it's anyone's guess who the three drivers among the four battling for those three spots in Chase will end up being. But all the non-winners below 14th in points (Ryan Newman) are out of Chase contention, for all practical purposes. 389. joey2448 posted: 08.28.2016 - 7:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @381, Oh I got ya, Sean. As a result, he could not afford to run as hard as he could because he couldn't risk wrecking his cars or having mechanical problems. He actually had more potent equipment than he could show, as a fifth-place time trial effort at the 1979 Daytona 500 proved. In fact, when Dale Earnhardt first drove for Childress in 1981, Childress actually urged him to drive for Bud Moore, because Moore's team was better equipped for success than Childress' own team was at that time. And even during the 12-year period from 1986-'97 when Earnhardt rarely finished out of the top five in points, Childress' engines were among the most conservative on the circuit, which they had to be because of how hard Earnhardt pushed them. Only twice, in 1987 and 1990, could it be argued that Childress' equipment was undisputedly the best in the sport, and Earnhardt won 20 races in those two years and won the championship in both seasons. But the current problems regarding RCR can go back to both Clint Bowyer and Kevin Harvick leaving after the end of the 2013 season (Bowyer left after '12), because they've not won since then, and the fact that Ryan Newman, one of the greatest qualifiers in NASCAR history, can't find the front during time trials with a compass, shows how weak Childress' equipment is, compared to the Hendrick Chverolets (including customer teams such as SHR and Ganassi), Penske's Fords, and the Toyotas of JGR and now Furniture Row Racing. For Ryan Newman and Austin Dillon, running at tracks like Michigan against the equipment of HMS and their customer teams, Penske, and JGR is like bringing a rubber knife to a gun fight, because they have virtually no chance. There are about three or four drivers that I think could be serious contenders if they got some horsepower, and Austin Dillon is undoubtedly one of them. 397. Indy: She was racing to get the last lucky dog before getting collected in the wreck with Tony and Newman. She got damage on that caution and dropped back a few positions. She would have probably finished 20th at worst without the damage Pocono: As Damon pointed out in the Danica page thread, Billy got conservative with the pit strategy and she very well could have finished in the top 3 but they decided to pit. If it's a non-strategy race then she likely finishes somewhere in the top 20 (take #34 and #7 away from it) and passes a couple more cars. Situational stuff happens. Watkins Glen: Lead the race and was 6th on a restart before she got punted by Kyle Busch. One could argue that she had a poor restart but she still got punted by Busch for a stupid reason. Bristol: I'll give this one to you. She wasn't very good at the beginning and didn't get a handle on the car until about lap 400, when she started moving up a little bit. Michigan: Was not that far off two of her teammates for majority of the race (Kurt and Tony). Kurt had a break with the caution on lap 120 where he remained on the lead lap while Tony and Danica were a lap down. The 90 lap green flag run really hurt her as she was in the back half of the 20's when it began and climbed to 20th by the time it was over. She's had 1 bad run and a couple derailed by things out of her control. She could have easily had a top 5 (or potential win at Pocono) and a top 10 (Watkins Glen) over that period of "mediocrity" You guys have to learn that numbers aren't always what they seem. Toyota has FAILED to finish in the top 5 for BOTH Michigan and Pocono races in 2016. The question is, are they good to go for their first ever manufacturers' championship? They have a 20 point lead over Chevrolet. Two weeks ago they had a 35 point lead prior to Bristol. Brad Keselowski finishes 3rd at his hometrack. I know he wants to win at Michigan so badly, yet he shows class by showing up at the victory circle to congratulate Kyle Larson. Kyle Busch has issues early on. He has said over the radio, "I absolutely adore this place," in sarcasm. Crew Chief Adam Stevens did a good job telling him that this race isn't in the Chase so he shouldn't worry (and we all know Kyle wants to win every week). I bet Kyle Busch is really happy he won here back in 2011, otherwise this is typically another track like Kansas for him. A track where he and trouble are married. As we witnessed the race today, we can pretty much see that the future of NASCAR is set. Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney in the top 4. Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott could potentially have some sort of rivalry (Kyle Busch vs Carl Edwards 2008 rivalry, maybe?). Ryan Blaney, why so cold? Must be frustration that his Rookie of the Year Candidates are achieving more than he has been this season. Chase Elliot on the verge of winning a race, and is constantly near the front on a weekly basis. Kyle Larson and Chris Buescher scoring their first wins this season. Austin Dillon is fighting to stay in the Chase, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr just finished as a runner-up last week at Bristol. I can see why Ryan Blaney was bitter in his interview, but regardless of his feelings, I still think him, Chase Elliott, William Byron and Erik Jones are future Cup Champions. I thought it was after the 2012 season that Bowyer left RCR. And Sector (#402), the races at Michigan are not nearly as important to Toyota as they are to Chevrolet and Ford, because they're not headquartered in, or near the Motor City. So it would stand to reason that they would struggle at Michigan, compared to the Chevrolet and Ford teams, who put much more emphasis on the Michigan races than Toyota does. Toyota's racing headquarters are in Costa Mesa, CA, so the equivalent to the Michigan races to the Toyota teams is the race at Auto Club Speedway, which Toyota probably puts as much emphasis on as any race except the Daytona 500, Brickyard 400, and the Coca-Cola 600, all of which they dominated this year. It remains to be seen if they'll dominate the Southern 500 in a similar fashion. Seeing Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, and Ryan Blaney all among the leaders in this race was somewhat reminiscent of the first of the three heats that made up the sprint showdown, as they were all up front, yet ironically none of those three won that heat race, as Trevor Bayne stole that heat race from all three of them on a late restart. Larson was to beat Elliott in the third of those heat races to advance to the All-Star Race. And as for Ryan Blaney's seemingly sour interview, could it be that, unlike Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott, who have strong teams behind them, could it be because this might have been Blaney's last real chance to win for a long time, because of the team he's with? After all, the Wood Brothers don't have the personnel or pit equipment to match the sport's top teams, so they need to take advantage of a really good run when they get one. There's a reason why they've only won one race in the last 15 years, and that was in a restrictor plate race using a style of racing nobody had any experience with, and a race that there were no green flag pit stops in, which neutralized the pit crew disadvantage they were at. 412. Larson has fast cars, but he doesn't have the team around him to show just how good he could be. Chip Ganassi's organization is spread too thin across all the disciplines of racing it competes in, something that I think is hurting not only it's NASCAR operation, but it also hampering his IndyCar efforts to a lesser degree. In the case of Austin Dillon, I think the team is there, but the equipment is not. Richard Childress has always had solid teams, something he was building towards even when he was the driver of the #3 car in the late 70s. But he's always played it on the conservative side when it comes to his equipment, racing to finish events rather than running all out to win them, something that goes back to when the independent drivers, of which he was one of the better ones, had to finish races in order to be able to get to the next race or the the next season. I think if Larson was with a better team, he'd likely have 6-8 wins by now, and I think if Austin Dillon had more horsepower, he might also have a few wins, or certainly contended for wins far more often than he does, because I think his equipment is holding him back. 426. I previously stated that if Austin Dillon had more horsepower that he'd be a contender on a more frequent basis. This is a perfect example. If Austin Dillon was in that car, the #10 car would be up there racing the other SHR cars on a more consistent basis because he's one of those guys that can be counted on to be running at the finish of races, and he doesn't make very many mistakes that would put him out of the hunt. Danica's not only slow, but she's also proven to be very mistake-prone, a toxic combination for any race car driver. If that #10 had a solid driver, I think it could win once or twice a year. And Danica's #10 car is a prime example of a car that someone solid that doesn't have much horsepower, but generally is good at finishing races with his nose clean, could have a lot of success in, someone like Austin Dillon. When I think of something like this, I always think of what happened when Rick Hendrick put Terry Labonte in the #5 car in 1994. Labonte always seemed to keep his nose clean and finish races, but in the early 90s, his cars had no speed at all. Then when he finally got back in a car that actually had speed, we all saw what happened. Over the next three years, he nearly doubled his career win total, winning eight times from 1994-'96 and claimed his second championship. His career win total when he got into that #5 car in 1994 was 10. Austin Dillon is that kind of driver. He generally runs a clean race, finds a way to make it to the finish, and this year, has hung around the top ten in the points standings without much speed at all. And three years ago, he won the XFinity Series championship with a car that had so little speed that it never made it to victory lane. I think he's just the kind of driver who could explode into a big winner if he got in a really good car, and that #10 is just such a car. It just happens to have the slowest, most mistake-prone driver that I can ever remember being in such a potent car in the 27 years that I've watched the sport. 431. bayley01 posted: 08.29.2016 - 8:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Btw .... I think that is how NASCAR does it, yes, so if somebody runs out of fuel for example, that lap would count as well. I don't think that is how NASCAR SHOULD do it. I'm into calculating speed averages myself and have done quite a bit of this for Formula One, IndyCar, sports car racing, and even some touring car racing, but unfortunately NASCAR has never provided lap times for all drivers (yes, I realize the fields are larger and the number of laps are larger which means pdf files would be massive, but still) like I have been able to find for all those other series so I can't calculate this myself and truly figure it out. When I calculate speed percentiles, I only include laps that are less than 105% of the lap time for each driver's fastest lap, and then take an average of those laps, which will exclude cautions, pit stops, running out of fuel, mechanical problems, and the like, and I do think this does an excellent job of measuring pace when you do it for the entire year. However, for individual races, there will always be flukes and quirks, and you do need a larger sample to calculate each driver's pace. I haven't done it for Michigan yet, but after 23 races, the speed percentiles (based on average green flag speed for all races converted to percentile form) were as follows: Kevin Harvick - 91.63 Kyle Busch - 84.67 Carl Edwards - 81.86 Martin Truex, Jr. - 78.41 Jimmie Johnson - 77.35 Joey Logano - 77.31 Brad Keselowski - 77.13 Matt Kenseth - 76.71 Dale Earnhardt, Jr. - 74.96 Denny Hamlin - 74.30 Kurt Busch - 73.42 Chase Elliott - 70.29 Ryan Blaney - 63.64 Kyle Larson - 63.14 Austin Dillon - 60.22 A.J. Allmendinger - 58.90 Ryan Newman - 57.11 Jamie McMurray - 55.70 Tony Stewart - 55.38 Kasey Kahne - 54.87 Greg Biffle - 54.80 Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. - 54.68 Paul Menard - 49.94 Aric Almirola - 45.40 Trevor Bayne - 44.22 Chris Buescher - 36.14 Danica Patrick - 35.99 Casey Mears - 32.84 Clint Bowyer - 32.32 Brian Scott - 29.77 Matt DiBenedetto - 26.65 David Ragan - 26.49 Michael McDowell - 26.26 Regan Smith - 25.50 Landon Cassill - 19.47 Cole Whitt - 15.96 Michael Annett - 11.81 Jeb Burton - 5.13 Jeffrey Earnhardt - 3.28 Josh Wise - 2.70 Reed Sorenson - 2.39 So if you want an objective measure of how fast drivers have been this season, there you go. Most of the individual race speed rankings do have value as there is a lot less off-strategy stuff than there used to be, but there are definitely some quirky races that have to be taken with a grain of salt, and I'm sorry Damon but I think Watkins Glen is one of them. Jimmie Johnson was #1 in that race in speed and I don't think anybody who watched that race would seriously believe that either. Compare drivers' rankings on this list to their actual points standings/wins/laps led to see who is overachieving. I think Brad Keselowski is overachieving quite a bit because through 23 races he was only in the top three in speed twice (2nd once and 3rd once) yet had 4 wins. I do not know whether he was in the top three in speed this week though, as I haven't looked at the data yet. Really though, speed data for an individual race doesn't have as much value as speed data for an entire season, as above, and in that regard, Danica doesn't look very good relative to her teammates, especially considering how much faster than everyone else Harvick has been (which surprised me.) 433. Could rain up to five-seven inches in some places, including where I live AND at the race track itself. Yikes. At the very least the forecast for the weekend looks a lot more promising. Hermine is expected to be gone by Saturday afternoon and the weather for Sunday afternoon/night is forecast to be clear and sunny. So they SHOULD be able to get the 500 in on time. Least, I HOPE so-as I'm going once again this year, and I would not like a repeat of the 2007 race where the race got washed out from Saturday night to Sunday afternoon. I remember having to sit in the muddy parking lot for several hours and having to wait until it was announced over MRN that the race was postponed. Needless to say it was NOT fun trying to get out of the parking lot that night! 441. chevyfan98 posted: 09.01.2016 - 5:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I've been checking the weather and it looks like by Saturday everything should be fine. I really hope it stays that way since I'm going to be home this weekend for an event my family does every Labor Day weekend, and I've been looking forward to this weekend for a while. 442. joey2448 posted: 09.01.2016 - 5:38 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Qualifying for Xfinity and Cup races have been cancelled, meaning Kevin Harvick will be the Southern 500 polesitter. There will be one Xfinity practice followed by two Cup practices on Saturday, and the Xfinity race is scheduled at its original start time of 3:30 p.m. ET. IMO, I think they should qualify the Cup field early Saturday afternoon instead of having a second practice session, run the Xfinity race, then have a final Cup practice Saturday night. 443.
