Virtually every team in the field is running a throwback paint scheme in this race minus Brian Scott (who's sponsor Twisted Tea is running a special paint job tying in with a fan contest instead) and Reed Sorenson. All qualifying and Friday track activity for this race and its accompanying Xfinity/Busch series undercard was washed out by Hurricane Hermine. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. announced in the lead up to this race that his concussion from earlier this season would keep him on the sidelines throughout the rest of 2016. Jeff Gordon is racing the #88 Chevy in his place this weekend with he and Alex Bowman splitting it throughout the rest of 2016. 4. I don't really see the point in him coming back and taking a chance with nothing on the line. I just hope that 'out for the season' doesn't turn into 'out permanently'. 5. Blue Palaski posted: 09.02.2016 - 12:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) That is scary, at first, all indication were he was only going to miss two races and then hop back in the car. Then it was two more, and two more, now his conditioned he worsened to the point he will miss the remaining races. It's very scary. One of my favorite wrestlers, Bryan Danielson (known as Daniel Bryan in WWE) had to retire this year at 34 because of post-concussion syndrome. It's unfair, but it's the price these athletes pay to entertain us. 6. JSPorts posted: 09.02.2016 - 12:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This is bad news. Daniel Bryan is retired already? I feel like he wasn't in WWE for that long. Yes, this is Kevin Harvick's 4th poles of the season due to weather, 5th if you want to include the All-Star Race as well. Yet he hasn't successfully "won" a pole all year by time trials either, and he won 8 of them back in 2014. Last time Harvick won the won was in the Spring Phoenix race of 2015 (ironically his first pole at Phoenix considering he's won there 8 times as well). That sucks for Dale Earnhardt Jr. I really don't want Jeff Gordon to race anymore than the next guy following this race. If that's the case, I hope Martinsville is the one track he does race at. Imagine the upset if he could pull one out of the hat and win there. I would love to see Tony Stewart win this race. It would be huge for him to reach 50 career wins, and not only that, winning at Darlington for the first time would add a more significant memory for him and his fans. Let's not forget he has won here in the Xfinity series back in 2008 as well. 8. Alex Bowman will run the remainder of the season in the 88 car. Last year the winner of this race did not have a throwback paint scheme, but hopefully this year's winner will have one. 10. Jolly Mean Giant posted: 09.02.2016 - 3:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) ^Obvious sarcasm is obvious. Wow, that sucks to hear about Junior. Had a feeling this was going to get worse, though, when the amount of races he was going to miss went from 2, to 4, to 6...He's had plenty of concussions throughout his career and I too get the feeling we might be seeing the end of his career MUCH sooner than any of us hoped. (Possibly now.) With Gordon, Stewart, AND Junior all about to be out of the sport completely as drivers...what is going to happen to NASCAR's fanbase? Particularly Junior Nation (even if I'm not fond of the most stereotypical members of his fanbase). If Junior is gone, what will happen to them? Will they migrate to another driver, or will they stop following the sport altogether? Have some mixed emotions on Gordon being in this race: on the one hand, there's a part of me that feels glad knowing I will get to see Gordon race one final time (since I'll be there at the track on race day as I have every year since '03-I've gotten a bit used to seeing him driving the #88 since he started substituting for Junior, but it is STILL going to be surreal seeing him drive something other than the #24 in person)-I guess that's my inner fanboy from my childhood. On the other hand I realize he would rather prefer to enjoy his retirement and another part of me wishes Bowman was running this race instead. Good to hear that Alex will get more shots in the #88 this year-he had good top 10 runs going in both races he ran this year until circumstances beyond his control (a flat tire causing a crash, ignition issues) negated that. He's a young kid who I think definitely has some potential to him; I would really like to see him succeed in the upper levels of NASCAR. Should be a good race as Darlington usually puts on a good show; I am eager to get to the track already! Of course Hurricane Hermine is going to have to blow through first before anything can happen (got some tornado warnings around my local area earlier today...) 14. murb posted: 09.02.2016 - 3:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Hate it for Dale Jr, but it's definitely the right move. Mine is probably Tony Stewart's Bobby Allison Coca-Cola design. Honorable mentions are Harvick's Busch beer scheme, Logano's Shell scheme, Gordon's "Gray Ghost" design and Kenseth's Tide Ride. Speaking of Tony, Sector mentioned it but I also would love to see Stewart win this race, because he's never won here in the Cup series. It certainly leaves a sizeable hole in his resume (which doesn't need anything more, everyone knows he's a legend), and it's hard to believe someone like Smoke hasn't won here (in Cup). 20. joey2448 posted: 09.02.2016 - 5:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, gotta mention Kyle Busch's Interstate Batteries throwback and Denny Hamlin's Darrell Waltrip 1984 design. Like Joey said, the Gibbs cars came up with some really good ones. That being said, I don't think any of them this year are as good as Kyle Larson's from last year. 22. NASCARLover22 posted: 09.02.2016 - 6:48 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I might be in the minority here but one of my favorite throwback schemes is Jimmie Johnson's throwback, I just love the color scheme on the car. I also like Joey Logano's scheme, damn he needs to run that as the primary scheme. I also love all the Gibbs schemes that are being run. I'm glad they actually decided to run throwback schemes this year! My least favorite scheme? Chris Buescher's. Three words: terrible number font. Three more words: ugly color scheme. I know it's a throwback to the first Love's travel store opened, but that car is U-G-L-Y. Some dishonorable mentions include Michael Annett's scheme, which is just too bland for my taste, and Kasey Kahne's scheme, which is also bland as hell. I'm kind of disappointed Brian Scott's team didn't even try to find a throwback scheme to run. They could've EASILY found one to run (Terry Labonte's 1984 championship scheme, Kyle Petty's Hot Wheels scheme, Buckshot Jones' Georgia Pacific scheme, Rick Wilson's STP scheme). Instead Brian Scott will only have a picture of a fan on the side of his car this weekend. Honestly, couldn't that have waited to run that until next weekend? It is THROWBACK weekend for a reason. 23. Postpone till after Homestead, similar to Loudon back in 2001 due to 9/11? How would that impact the Chase? Would Chicago be considered thee last race to the Chase or would we have an 11 Chase race for the championship instead? If so, would the final 4 end up racing for the championship at both Homestead AND Darlington, rather than just Homestead? Something to think about. 24. Saturday and Sunday are going to be much clearer, bright and sunny. I live within 30 miles of the track and the worst of Hermine has largely passed by now. They should be A-OK for both races this weekend (I bet both will have competition cautions early, though). "Do it. It would be great if we could get Big Mac, Schroeder (he's going to the race though), and NASCARLover22 in on it as well." Would do it even if I was going if I had a phone that could access the Internet. I don't because...well, me and my folks are very cheap like that :D So no chance of that happening. I won't be able to comment on the race until after it's over and I've gotten back home. Like my past races I feel pretty confident I will probably enjoy watching this one more in person than if I saw it on TV...I don't know, maybe it has to do with the general atmosphere and the fact that I'm largely there to enjoy myself and have a good time than sit back and nitpick everything I'm seeing. (Though I still sometimes find time for that...) 25. My mom's been promising to take me to New Hampshire Speedway for YEARS now, and she still hasn't due to money constraints. In fact, we can't even afford to go to our local track, Thompson Speedway! But seriously, have fun and enjoy the race. Seeing a race live at the race track is a sensation you just can't feel watching other sport events (well, that's only my opinion). The sights, the smell of burning rubber, and cheering your favorite driver on are just a few of the many things that is so great about spectating a NASCAR race. 26. 88&4Fan posted: 09.02.2016 - 8:31 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) How would you know that if you've never been to a race? I did notice that was what you said, I was only trying to say that it was almost certainly not going to happen. I have a bad habit of coming off as a jerk in what I say when I don't MEAN to... ...Honestly, I have no clue what they would do if they had to cancel the race weekend or postpone it somewhere else. The only time we've ever seen that happen in recent years was 1998 (when severe wildfires pushed the July Daytona race to October) and 2001 (when the 9/11 attacks pushed the second New Hampshire race to November as the season finale-still have a hard time believing they were actually able to pull that one off considering one would think the November weather in New Hampshire would not be very cooperative!). I'm guessing they WOULD do the same if something similar happened that prevented the race from being able to be run anytime near when it was scheduled to, but it would be really weird for them to so drastically shake up the way the Chase plays out at the last minute. (Then again, that happened in 2013 after the Spingate cheating schedule...) Would be...interesting going to see them in November fighting for the title-the only opportunity I've had to see that in person was in the 2004 Busch Series race (during the one year Darlington WAS a November race weekend), where Kyle Busch crashed out of that one and Truex clinched the series title. (I didn't get to see the-what we THOUGHT at the time was going to be the final-Southern 500 that year.) 30. Big Mac Fan posted: 09.02.2016 - 11:36 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) What the heck, I'll bring back my old name just once. This will probably be an unpopular opinion, but here it goes: I could not be happier that they removed the Southern 500 from Labor Day after 2003. Yes, it ruined a 50+ year tradition, but if it hadn't left, it would feel like an ordinary race, albeit a crown jewel. But since they made the wise decision to bring it back, the race takes on a whole new meaning. You have the throwback schemes, you had the old announcers segment last year, classic Darlington, and it's rejuvenated the fanbase for NASCAR. It feels like a magical, special night. And if it wasn't for getting canned and brought back, it wouldn't be as special as it is now. As for the schemes, a lot of them look really good. The Interstate Batteries one is probably my favorite. If we don't get rain, it should be a fun race. 32. 88&4Fan posted: 09.03.2016 - 12:02 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Couldn't have said it better myself. For someone who got into NASCAR in the late 2000s, I never thought of Darlington as any more than just another race. I never understood any of the fans who begged and pleaded for the race to move back to Labor Day weekend. This all changed last year, when we got to witness over half the field in throwback schemes and special announcers in the booth (which they're apparently doing again, not sure which announcers though). This year, it should be even better with all but two drivers in special paint schemes (virtually no chance for the non-throwback winner buzzkill ending like last year) and even us Racing-Reference posters getting in on the action. I can safely say now that this has become one of my favorite dates on the circuit. 33. 88&4Fan posted: 09.03.2016 - 12:11 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Speaking of 180s, I can't believe how much my opinion has changed on Jeff Gordon in the past year. Altanta and Homestead are easily the more legit 1.5 tracks. 285. Sector posted: 09.04.2016 - 8:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I have no issues with Charlotte & Texas either. 286. Tony Stewart won the fall Talladega race in 2008 while Regan Smith was penalized for passing below the yellow line However, Regan Smith managed to get his first career win at this racetrack, Darlington, in 2011, holding off Carl Edwards for the win, who eventually won this race last year in 2015. Darlington is the only racetrack that Tony Stewart has not won at (minus Kentucky) in the Cup level. Carl Edwards is doing a throwback scheme of his rookie season car. Tony Stewart edged Carl Edwards out on a tiebreaker for an incredible Chase run in 2011 for the championship, same year Regan Smith won his Darlington race. I find it really interesting how the three drivers have somewhat intertwine with one another. 559. I just got home from the race (got lucky and was able to get out pretty quick), and let me say: I am totally fatigued from all the walking and standing up. Not something I've ever mentioned before, but I have really bad flat feet in real life, which makes going to the race every year quite a fair bit more challenging. Says a lot about how much I enjoy the experience that I still go anyway even despite the added difficulties! Overall, I think this was another really fun Darlington race! Not the best I've ever seen, but it was pretty fun overall. Lemme give my thoughts, like I said: -Gotta feel good for Truex right now. Can't forget how just 3 years ago Truex basically became the fall guy in the whole MWR Spingate scandal, being the only MWR driver to REALLY suffer any actual serious punishment from the whole ordeal (having first his sponsor and then his owner pull the plug on him). Now he's just won two of the biggest races on the calendar, and MWR is deader than the dodo. In a way, that feels like poetic justice. Way to go, Truex! Hard to not feel happy for him. -Harvick would've EASILY won this race going away...if not for his pit crew. Holy damn, did they have some awful pit stops! I swear, he would probably have 15+ wins with SHR if not for his pit crew. Also, I thought Larson was going to win for a while when he got out front. Would've been cool to see him get his first two wins back-to-back-something that has ALMOST never happened. Chase Elliott also ran well all night, although I think benefiting from the Trevor Bayne spin during green flag pit stops really helped him because he was running down around 15th or so before that, then stayed in the top 10 pretty much the rest of the race. -I think they moved the starting time up an hour earlier this year? I don't know for sure, but it felt like it, because it didn't get completely dark until about halfway through. (Maybe due to the lack of cautions earlier?) Was quite interesting seeing how certain cars got better or worse with the changing conditions (Kyle Busch in particular is one car I noticed looked a LOT better in the daytime than the night, he really plummeted once it got dark). -Speaking of cautions-pretty calm first half with only 2 yellow flags, but as seems to often be the case they amped it up in the second half. Some guys took some pretty hard shots in this one-Aric Almirola in particular took a nasty head-on blow to the turns 1 and 2 wall. Tony Stewart also blew up right in front of where I was sitting (well, that's where his car first started belching smoke). -The retro paint schemes were a real treat to see in person! I really liked how they had them do a single-file pace lap before the start-got good footage of all the cars going by! (Of course I brought my camera, got plenty of good footage including several restarts, several replays of accidents on the TV screen in the infield, several cars limping to the garage including Scott, Johnson, and Stewart, and the finish and Truex's victory celebration.) Man, I don't know if I could pick out a favorite, there were a LOT of good ones this year! (I particularly liked Landon Cassill's J. D. McDuffie car, I'll say.) Kind of felt sad seeing some of them fall by the wayside during the race-in particular, I felt sad to see Biffle tear up the Underbird...And seeing Bayne blow up (they went under the hood during the first and second cautions after he spun, and his car began belching out smoke during the next cycle of green flag pit stops and went directly to the garage), because that is the Mark Martin scheme I remember him driving when I was little... -Interesting getting to see several drivers' season-long struggles in person. Brian Scott crashing twice is pretty much the perfect summary of his entire season. Absolutely littered with cars coming home in that condition. (What was the deal between him and Stewart...?) RPM as a whole is really down, though-what's the deal with Almirola? He had pretty much a career-high year last season and has looked downright mediocre all season long. Having both cars ending up totaled more or less sums up how bad a year RPM has had. And what about Biffle? Know he's getting older and thus will be less competitive, but in the past few seasons he's at least had consistency and reliability on his side. This year he's racking up the DNFs! -Johnson may one day become one of the more popular and well respected drivers out there, but the day may be a ways away. When the #48 wrecked almost EVERYONE around where I sat was cheering! Kurt Busch's great season seems to have also gone off the rails of late, two crash DNFs in the past 3 races after completing every lap in the season prior. I do agree with what others have said, though-he definitely HAS seemed to mature a lot recently. Seemed pretty mellowed out after crashing, being more disappointed than angry... -Unless we get a new winner OTHER than Elliott/Dillon/McMurray in the coming weeks, or one of those three has an awful race at Richmond and Newman has an AWESOME race (I actually thought for a moment he might actually win the race on his older tires when he stayed out late)...I think this Chase field is more or less set. Elliott and Dillon ran well enough tonight, and Buescher ran decently enough to increase the gap over 30th. Apologies for the long post, but I guess that's more or less what you'd expect after an exciting day at the track and coming home with a lot on your mind! (I'm a pretty wordy individual sometimes, anyways). Overall I had a really great time, and I can't wait to come back in 2017! 631. murb posted: 09.05.2016 - 12:00 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) "I think they moved the starting time up an hour earlier this year?" Both came by right after the previous restart (which was for Earnhardt's spin) sounding like they had something seriously wrong under the hood. That is not very often that you actually see TWO cars drop out at exactly the same time for something other than being caught up in the same crash... 636. Yeah, most fans love cheering when their least favorites slam the wall...if you've ever been to a race, this should never come as a big surprise. And in 2012 IIRC he drove into the lead with less than 100 to go. Its all lined up perfectly for him. He won't be invisible on Saturday night no matter where he runs because he's one of the main storylines. Probably needs to win to get in.
