It is just as good as Homestead, but instead of getting praise it gets the dreaded "cookie-cutter" label. Everyone seems to forget the great racing and great finishes we have seen there. Watching this Truck race reminds me of this. I wish this track would get more credit. It is just as good as Homestead, in its own way. 3. joey2448 posted: 09.16.2016 - 9:34 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) Not sure why NASCAR decided to cancel qualifying and set the field by points when it was dry and sunny during the scheduled qualifying window. They made the decision hours in advance and instead ran a Cup practice session during that time. Oh well. Six drivers will be running special Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles paint schemes for this race, although all of them are typically backmarkers. The six drivers are David Ragan, Joey Gase, Danica Patrick, Regan Smith, Michael McDowell and Landon Cassill. 4. 1995z71 posted: 09.16.2016 - 9:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I usually hate when qualifying is rained out but it's kinda cool that all the chase drivers will be starting up front including Chris Buescher. 5. Isn't Ty Dillon substituting Regan Smith due to his girlfriend having a baby this weekend? 7. Maverick posted: 09.16.2016 - 11:28 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Since the field is set by points, why would Busch start first and not Keselowski? They each have the same amount of wins, but Keselowski was higher in points. 8. Mannoroth posted: 09.16.2016 - 11:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) They have the equal number of wins, so it doesn't matter. But Kyle is first because of higher number of second place finishes over Brad. 9. chevyfan98 posted: 09.17.2016 - 3:27 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) So the 88 didn't make the owners chase I guess? 10. 18fan posted: 09.17.2016 - 3:48 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The 88 did not make the owner's chase. NASCAR clearly prioritizes practice over qualifying when qualifying day is impacted by rain, which is sort of understandable, but does make them look bad when there is no rain during the time that qualifying was originally scheduled for. At least there usually aren't teams sent home because of those decisions anymore because there are just 40 cars at most races. 11. This was *clearly* NASCAR's line of thinking when they cancelled qualifying. 12. BluesTravelerFan posted: 09.17.2016 - 3:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm picking Kyle for the race. BUT I pick Hamlin for the championship. And not because of their recent runs, but because I feel it's his time and all the other teams competing for the title have notable shortcomings. I also pick the Penske cars and Harvick to be his closest competition and my darkhorse is Kurt Busch. I understand why Brad is a popular pick, but I have my doubts as to whether he's really the clutch driver so many say he is. For my reasoning here's his chase rundown the last four years: In 2012 he no doubt ran strong throughout and earned his championship, but it has to be said that he didn't really do anything special the last two races while the 48 team imploded. You really have to wonder what the result would have been had they not had two failures. After going AWOL in 2013 Brad had one of the fastest cars throughout 2014 and came into the chase with the most wins and kicked it off with a Chicago victory and appeared to be the favorite but couldn't keep it in his pants and managed to enrage not 1 but 2 of the sport's most accomplished drivers. He got into the scuffle with Kenseth and put himself behind the 8 ball, but did come up with a huge victory at Dega the next week to save himself. However he then followed it up by doing little the next three races but getting punched by Gordon (he may be small and high pitched but you don't want to mess with him though!) and wound up winning the most races but didn't make it to the final four. Then comes the most glaring example, 2015. Although this time he only won one race and wasn't as fast as his teammate, he was nonetheless in a good spot having made the final 8 and was dominating at Martinsville. Then came a huge moment that was completely overlooked because of what came after it. For no apparent reason he took out Kenseth and took himself out in the process, taking away a probable victory and further agitating Matt (for the record, had it not been for this incident, I don't think the Logano wreck would have happened) It was a HUGE moment that didn't get any attention. But yet, next week at Texas it appeared he would redeem himself. Brad led over 300 laps in a Truex Coke 600 type performance only to to get challenged and go down quietly to Jimmie. It was a chase full of missed chances for the 2 team. All this is not to say he isn't a valid favorite, but it should be taken into account. He may prove me wrong. 13. For no apparent reason he took out Kenseth and took himself out in the process" He pushed off of 2, their tires connected, and it snapped a tie rod, sending him wide into Kenseth and wrecking him. There was zero intent there. Brad stated as such and the video proves it. 14. The way it was worded, it seemed like you'd thought there was some 'intent' with that incident lol. Kez ain't perfect, but he's one of my guys and unless he pulls something Harvick/Busch/Stewart-like, I will defend him lol. 18. chevyfan98 posted: 09.17.2016 - 5:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Hemric wasn't going to make it with Penske. Logano and Keselowski aren't going anywhere, and if they add a third car it'll be for Blaney (they kind of already do, just using the Wood Bros. points and car #). Unless they add a fourth car in cup one day, which I don't even think Hemric would be the first priority for that, he was never going to get anywhere with them. Good move in my opinion. 19. chevyfan98 posted: 09.17.2016 - 5:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Crap, wrong page. 20. 18fan posted: 09.17.2016 - 5:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think Harvick is the favorite. The seem to have the speed necessary to win and, while their pit crew is a question mark, I have more confidence in him than I do in Denny or Truex, who are probably the two biggest competitors in terms of speed. I think Larson will be a factor, but Talladega being in the Chase, and especially an elimination race, makes it so hard to predict who will advance through that round. Both years of this format, a driver who appeared to be safe going into Talladega was eliminated there (Kyle in 2014 and Denny in 2015). My dark horse is Logano. He hasn't led a lot and only has one win, but that team has a knack for getting better throughout the race and are always there at the end. 21. They will be as follows... David Ragan- Leonardo (blue mask, the team leader) Joey Gase- Rocksteady (bad guy rhino) Danica Patrick- April O'Neil (the turtle's usual human ally) + the team in general Regan Smith- Raphael (red mask, the aggressive one) Michael McDowell- Donatello (purple mask, the nerdy one) Landon Cassill- Bebop (bad guy warthog) Weirdly there isn't a car for Michelangelo, the orange-masked comic relief turtle who is always very popular with kids. I'm not buying that. This has easily been his worst season ever, he's shown little speed, and he's making a lot of mistakes (think about all the times this year that he's crashed by himself). Plus he's gotten only 10 top tens all year. And it's not like only the 48 is off. All 4 Hendrick cars have serious speed problems. Chase Elliott had that great Spring stretch, but then he was horrible, going 8 races without a top 10 and he's hasn't looked all that great either. The 88 has just one top 10 since APRIL. Heck, Kasey Kahne looks like the best Hendrick car at this point, and he's the only one that's improved compared to last season. Like I said, all empires rise and fall. 52. But to the hardcore fan it just seems like a slap in the face to everything that used to make racing great. You didn't need a neck and neck title fight to have a reason to watch every week. The race win was up for grabs and that was the biggest thing. I just feel most titles won since Kenseth won the last traditional title in 2003 seem watered down or almost tainted at best. Obviously Kyle buschs title last year is a GLARING example. But I mean come on. Kevin Harvick had a 50 point lead for many parts of the regular season. Right now he wouldn't advance to the round of 12. I think that's dumb. Chase Elliott was 11th in points a few weeks ago. Prior to 2004 he's racing for wins and a top 10 and spot at the microphone at the banquet. Now he's right in the hunt. Who knows how great Earnhardt Martin Wallace and others could have been if afforded that same chance. I know some will say "hey.....NFL teams go 15-1 and lose in their first playoff game a lot". That's definitely a better average finish than I remember him running at the time, but considering how great Kurt was in that car immediately before his suspension (late 2014 once he got Tony Gibson) and then especially immediately AFTER his suspension in 2015, I was pretty disappointed with how Regan ran. I thought he would have been doing what Bowman is doing now in the #88 since SHR (or at least the #41 and the #4) was hitting on all cylinders in that late 2014/early 2015 time span, but he pretty much ran 16th-20th his entire time in the car (admittedly though, Regan DID get a top ten in one of his fill in races for Dale Jr in 2012, and I don't think the 2012 #88 car was quite as strong as the 2015 #41 car equipment wise, so that was pretty impressive I guess). I also thought he would be a little better in the #7 this year too honestly. I thought he'd be a lot closer to how Bowman was last year, but really he's pretty much mirrored Michael Annett's 2014 season in that car (and even Annett was squeaking out top 20s at times in 2014, and I think the team was worse then - this year, other than an 8th in the Daytona 500 and a 3rd in the Pocono fog race, Regan only has one other top 20 all season). 540. chevyfan98 posted: 09.19.2016 - 1:35 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Funny that you think Smith's season has been closer to Annett in 2014 than Bowman last year because I think its actually quite the opposite. I also disagree that the team was worse then than it is now, back then they had one car (Annett) fully funded and a second car (Sorenson) half-funded, and Sorenson was able to get some good runs out of that car too. Of course not, that's why the win almost always won't go anywhere. However, if they decided to disqualify the winning car right after failing post-race inspection at the track, I would agree to disqualify that car and let the true winner celebrate his win, although he didn't take the checkered flag first. Chevrolet has won it every year since 2002, when Ford won it. Toyota is definitely deserving based on how strong they've been this year. They've won 14 times in 27 races. P4: I think NASCAR has it at 65 drive/owner points for such and such (i'd make that the base line) plus some money (whatever that was). And you lose your win. P5: Lose your win, double the points and money fine and sit for a week. Highest non-charter team in owner points gets your spot. P6: Lose your win, triple the points and money fine and you sit for 3 weeks. Highest non-charter team in owner gets your spot. Oh and if your dumb enough too any of the above twice in a year, you lose your charter and the highest non-charter teams gets it for free. I honestly believe Truex only failed the LIS is because Harvick body slammed him. 0.1 isn't blatant. If your talking 1 or 2. Okay but 0.1 is nothing. I too am in the 25%. Maverick posted: 09.20.2016 - 9:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Here's my potential idea (I also voted in the 25% on the survey): Minor infractions do not have points taken away. The victory still stands, but the crew chief, team, and drivers are fined. In addition, 3 minor infractions result in the deduction of points. Major infractions do have point takens away, and the win is also stripped. To determine where the original winner would now finish, you take their total number of points deducted combined with the points earned, and you put them in the proper spot. (Since I clearly did not explain that well, Matt Kenseth received a 15 point deduction for his New Hampshire win this year for a total of 29 points (44-15= 29). As a result, he would be relegated to 12th, as 12th place receives 29 points). The only time drivers would lose their original finishing position is if they had an infraction and won. But failing and finishing in any other spot still results in deductions. In addition, for every penalty, drivers would have to place a red checkered flag sticker above their door (exact opposite of the one for winning races). 575. NASCAR doesn't want that either -- in this case. So they stick their heads in the sand and pretend that both violations are so microscopic (the rule book be damned) that both are worthy of being ignored. Then they rewrite the rule book again for the umpteenth time to handle this situation in the future, but if/when it happens again NASCAR will just "play it by ear" again. 585. Allmendinger win and Ryan Blaney the other car who failed inspection they would not even blink an eye to penalize both guy, but since it Jimmie Johnson and one of the hottest drivers in the garage the last 2 seasons there will be nothing done. Absolute garbage. Instead of ignoring it how about have a back bone and stick to the rule book. That is a better solution. 586. David posted: 09.23.2016 - 3:48 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) The problem isn't NASCAR deciding not to penalize Truex and Johnson, it's the box they put themselves in by demanding precise adherence to the LIS inspection. If they had established a gray area (because let's be honest, 0.01 of a degree out of tolerance isn't going to be any discernible advantage), then this problem wouldn't have arose. Why does NASCAR seemingly change the rule book every other week? Because teams are trying their best to bend it. That's how it's always been. They would be stupid not to test the limits of the rules. Now, in this instance, the #78 team claimed that contact with Kevin Harvick's car knocked them out of tolerance. Considering that the #78 passed pre-race inspection, I would say that's entirely possible. It sets a extreme precedent to take away automatic advancement or 35 points (neither of which would have been the penalty anyway, and rightfully so) because of the smallest of infractions. Of course, NASCAR could just do away with the Chase and none of this malarkey would ever happen, but who am I to say... 587. Rules are rules, so Kyle Busch is as much of a Sprint Cup champion as Red Byron, and so is Jimmie Johnson to Dale Earnhardt. Every sport goes through changes to impact the championship in one form or another. This is NASCAR's. In all honesty, as long as we don't have a "winless" champion (looking at you Austin Dillon) at the Cup level, I'm all for whoever wins the championship and they'll deserve it. As for consistency and winning, consistency plays a far better role in being strong than winning. You can win 10 races a year and not win a championship under the old format (Rusty Wallace, 1993) if you don't have that consistency. Look at Ryan Newman in 2003 with his 8 wins. Jeff Gordon in 1996 with his 10 wins. The Chase isn't really any different when you look at it that way to be honest. You've just got to bring your A game when it matters most. Which is also why for those who think Carl Edwards doesn't deserve the championship in 2011 is really foolish because he wasn't "dominate." Especially considering they're probably the Latford System fanboys, Carl would have won under that format anyway. It was an even stronger year than Matt Kenseth's 2003 championship season. 603. And if you look into his stats (500 laps led, 7 poles), he was in contention. However, I still think that was Hornish's year. "How is a 1 win champion better than a winless one? I thought you all liked consistently more than wins, wouldn't that be exactly what you want? All consistently and no wins?" When I say that I value consistency, I'm not throwing wins out the window. The 2nd thing is we don't if Roush is giving FRM additional equipment support during the chase. The fact is Bob Jenkins after this season needs to reinvest the money he's going to get after the season back into the race organization. I'm guessing the 34 car is going to get around $800,000 of bonus money for finishing 16th in points and maybe gain a couple associate sponsors for 2017 for Chris Buescher. The bonus money for getting into the chase means the 2 teams Front Row Motors could get stuff like more recent equipment or slightly better cars. The fact is this organization needs help in a lot of areas since you are deal with an organization uses older equipment and is very underfunded. 614.
