He looks to be set on winning the pole award at season's end, his 2nd of his career after winning one in 2011, winning the FIVE-way tiebreaker when he won 3 poles. None of the Stewart-Haas Racing teammates qualified in the top 12, aka made it to the final round. This should make for a very interesting race. Toyota sweeps the front row, with last week's winner Martin Truex Jr starting next to Carl Edwards. Toyota continues to be strong and is solidifying themselves to winning the manufacturer's championship. 3. If that can't happen, then any of the following drivers winning would be cool too: Alex Bowman Martin Truex, Jr. Kevin Harvick Kurt Busch Kyle Larson Jimmie Johnson Austin Dillon Any upset winner A Redskins win would be nice too, but I'm not getting my hopes up. 6. He struggled in practice in the primary and fared no better in the backup car. He's going to need a miracle it seems, as he's 1 point out of the next Chase round right now and not trending in the right direction so far this weekend. The other RCR cars looked good though, with Newman qualifying 3rd and Paul Menard 14th. Even Michael McDowell in a loosely affiliated ride placed 20th in qualifying. Not one of the better weekends for Roush, as Bayne, Buescher and Biffle all qualify outside of the top 25. 12. BMan0213 posted: 09.24.2016 - 6:44 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @12 yeah they're both looking real good. I honestly think both of them could make it to round 3 this year. If they can get through this round, the second round is set up very good for them. Larson has shown he can contend at Charlotte and Kansas in the past and Jamie has 4 of his 7 career wins between Charlotte and Dega. I really think these guys are in position to make a deep run this year. 14. rm posted: 09.24.2016 - 10:38 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ganassi seems to be hitting their stride, and just barely in time for Larson to make the Chase. Jamie Mac has a history of showing up in big races, it might not be too surprising to see him make a run. 15. JSPorts posted: 09.24.2016 - 11:19 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I agree BMan. Larson seems to contend everywhere he goes. These two drivers are near opposites. You have Larson, the young kid from California who contends for wins each week and leads a lot of laps, but may make an error and crash. Then you have McMurray, the older veteran from the Midwest who doesn't lead many laps or contend for wins, but is very consistent and will have a better average finish. And the best part is, both strategies have worked this year. However, in the current Chase model, I think Larson has the better chance. But 3/7 wins for Jamie Mac at tracks in round 2 could be good for him. Talladega is always a wild card. I wouldn't bet on it, but McMurray could make a Newman-like run this year. If he can get through the 1st round, he has probably 2 of his 3 best tracks in the 2nd round. Then, if he could keep his nose clean in the 3rd round, he's normally solid at Martsinville, so if he could get a top-5 there with a top-10 at Texas and Phoenix, he could do it. Not likely, but it could happen. 16. "NASCAR wants 100 million a year for 10 years." Actually they want 1 Billion (with a B) for 10 years. But NASCAR isn't going too get that. People are too busy focusing on the race to do something else for two minutes, don't you know? But in all seriousness, I wouldn't mind so much if 99% of these commercials weren't so damned DUMB. Dollar Shave Club probably irks me the most currently, but I'm damned tired of seeing the "CAN YOU FEEL IT, CAN YOU FEEEEEL IT?" However, I doubt the 93 or 99 runs full time, and if they did it would be likely a team such as the 55 or 30 would not attempt every race. Also, we don't know about some teams, like HScott, and whether they will downsize or run at all next season. But I would love to see 43, with 3 DNQs each week. It would enhance competition, especially in qualifying. I agree racefangurl, but I don't fault he, his team, or his sponsor for their situations. Reed wants to drive at the highest level, and happens to have a disease that allows him to be sponsored and drive for a good team. Roush needs money, so they hire a driver who already has a sponsor instead of running the car without one. Lilly wants a driver who fits their brand, and someone with diabetes most certainly fits a diabetes company better than someone without diabetes. I'm glad they're investing in the sport. I just wish the economic climate of the sport (on a micro level) and the country (on a macro level) didn't dictate that ride-buyers would become so prevalent in motorsports today. 447. joey2448 posted: 09.28.2016 - 5:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I saw the Newman/Allmendinger post race incident on NASCAR Race Hub yesterday, and that was the first I had heard of it! Absolutely shocking that NBC didn't even have any coverage on something like that! Two drivers get into it on the cool down lap, and one of them turns the other, but no TV coverage??? Not even a replay after the fact?? 448. When I started watching at the turn of the century, yes, Jeff Gordon was utterly dominant, but there were ALWAYS different guys in the mix from week to week. Back then, you might have Dave Blaney running in the top 5 one week, Ward Burton the next, Todd Bodine the next, hell even guys like Mike Wallace and Robert Pressley had occasional strong runs, all despite not being in elite cars. Until 2005 or so, there was always the possibility that someone would just show up and be ON that race, stealing a win from the typical front runners. Wins by Joe Nemechek, Elliott Sadler, late-career Dale Jarrett, Johnny Benson, Robby Gordon, Ricky Craven, Steve Park, W Burton, Jeremy Mayfield and others clearly prove such a point. This unpredictability gradually disappeared throughout the latter half of the 2000s. Since mid-2014, the first year of the new Chase, when mid season wins by Allmendinger, Almirola, and Kahne lifted them into the Chase, parity has been at an all-time low. Aside from bizarre circumstantial wins by Stewart and Buescher, and Larson's (about time) ascension, there have been no unique winners since that time. Kyle Busch, Edwards, Hamlin, Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Harvick, Johnson, Earnhardt, Logano, Keselowski, Truex, and before retiring, Jeff Gordon also got a few wins in there. Outside the list of drivers above, with the exception of Chase Elliott and Larson, no other driver has legitimately been in winning contention outside of the RP races since at least 2 years ago. It just gets old--it's not quite to F1 level, but when you have the race on and it isn't mid-strategy cycle, there's almost a 100% chance that the top five consists exclusively of JGR, Penske, SHR cars, and Truex. There's just seemingly no possibility for a unique outcome each week. This is NOT a knock on the racing product, as I've actually really enjoyed what I've seen this year. Just my personal opinion, that being a more level, cost-effective playing field would greatly improve the experience from an unpredictable, entertainment perspective. Obviously, this could prove difficult as the $100m teams would put up a huge fight, having invested so much only to have their advantage taken away. I don't think having one less crew member over the wall could conceivably do anything for the competitive balance of the races, not sure how NASCAR figures that. It sucks money controls competition, but alas, as with many things, the peak of auto racing may have already come and passed. * I understand that in this particular race, the results are impacted by the ongoing Chase, splitting the field between guys who have championship aspirations and those who are along for the ride. However, in regards to the season-long results and the typical picture at the front of the field, these are ongoing trends that are rarely defied in practice. 451. dennyfan11 posted: 09.30.2016 - 4:48 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Definitely agree. In 2011 there were TONS of big name guys. Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Jr, Kasey Kahne, Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle, Mark Martin, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman, Brad Keselowski and Kurt Busch could ALL get up there and win races, and we also saw wins by Marcos Ambrose, Paul Menard, Regan Smith, David Ragan, and Trevor Bayne. Now, it's just EIGHT guys. Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, and Martin Truex Jr. Apart from Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott at Michigan, Kurt Busch, and Tony Stewart at Sonoma (Plus Buescher's fluke at Pocono) no one else has been a threat. But parity isn't at it's ALL-TIME lowest, back in the '70s there were only 5-6 guts who could win. 452. chevyfan98 posted: 09.30.2016 - 4:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Even 2013-2014 was pretty good. 2013 had SEVENTEEN different winners, and Dale Jr., Kurt Busch, and Clint Bowyer, who were more than capable of running up front that year, weren't among them. Then 2014 had Hendrick and Penske dominating the win column, but SHR, Gibbs, MWR, Roush, and Ganassi all had guys that could run up front on any given week, and RCR nearly won the championship with Newman. 453. Up until about 2009 parity started to decline I mean it's pretty pathetic we get happy seeing a BK car qualifying 25th when 15 years ago Hermie Sadler would show up with 8 employees his own car and qualified 8th at Martinsville. When will that ever happen again will we ever see a premium car qualify top 10 will we ever see a BK car get a top 10 at a mile and a half? Who knows. 454. Knowing 20+ cars have no shot before the race even starts brings down the intrigue. It's not really anyone's game if only 33% of the field realistically has a shot at the flag. Just seeing the smaller teams be able to hit on a setup and compete would be nice. With so much disparity, the difference between Gibbs and BK engineering is far more than any setup could ever cover 455.
