Let's address the big thing about qualifying:

What about that qualifying performance by Danica!!?? 13th overall, 5th
in 10 lap speed in the first practice. It looks like this could be the
week she gets her first top 10 (and way overdue) and the haters are
going to have to eat some crow.


Bowman had a nice effort but he's a footnote. Dude doesn't even have a
ride next year and hasn't shown enough to have a Cup ride for a full
time season. I'm sure the people on here will clamor on and on about him
and how he is going to have such a good run on Saturday.

You know, if you'd left out the thing about Bowman, I'd probably let it
slide. But no, you had to go out of your way to bash yet another driver
for absolutely no reason other than that he's shown more potential in
four races in top flight equipment than Danica has in four years.
Unnecessary jabs like that are why most people on these boards are fed
up with you.


As for my own thoughts on the lineup, I love that top three. Bowman has
impressed me a ton in the 88 this year, I have to admit when he first
got announced to run that car I thought he would struggle at least
relative to his teammates, but he's been amazing. Wouldn't be too
surprised if he ends up pulling a Jamie McMurray 2002 (substitute driver
winning the fall Charlotte race) on Saturday night... or whenever the
race runs.

Poster 1 is hypocrite because Danica hasn't shown any reason why she
deserves to take a space in a great car that is better than the driver.
I've followed CART/Indycar since the 1980's and I have followed NASCAR
since 1993. Danica Patrick was an average driver Indycar that got a fuel
mileage win in Japan.

When a driver doesn't have a top 10 in over 50 races in very good
equipment, there is no excuse for that. I don't think we have to go
through how many crew chiefs Danica has went through. The crew chief
excuse is long gone now and I feel sorry for who is going to be her next
crew chief.

The other thing is Alex Bowman did better than his results at New
Hampshire and Michigan. Alex's problem at Michigan was electrical issues
and that is something that can't be blamed on the driver.


Alex was in the top 10 when he got caught up in a wreck at the July New
Hampshire.

The other thing is Alex Bowman had a top 10 at Chicagoland and that is
more top 10 than more than Danica has all year round.

there is a problem with that. That site already has another poster that
makes outlandish comments, but still makes them despite other posters
ignoring that poster. We have posters that just don't get the message
even if we ignore them.

Um...no...no she isn't. You just decided that she was and decided to
MAKE it about her, while simultaneously slamming Bowman because (gasp)
he actually outqualified her and you feel she's a vastly superior talent
to him. Tell me, my friend...how many drivers in this field do you think
she is a superior talent to? If you say more than 25...

Good heavens. I want to respect your opinions but literally the ONLY
driver you ever have anything positive to say about is Danica. I'm not
sure I've ever seen you have anything nice to say about another driver.
How can we respect your opinions when you are so damned blunt and
in-your-face about them? May I ask WHY are you so fixated on her in the
first place? At this point I don't even think I should call you a
motorsports fan, just an obsessive fan of Danica, since you A. Said you
would stop watching the moment she left the sport and B. Openly said
auto racing was not a sport.

As for the race itself...don't know if this one's going to get run
Saturday night because of Matthew. Guess we'll just have to see what the
hurricane does in the next few days. I might not even get to watch this
race at all if it does run because I'm in an area that is going to get
impacted by Matthew (well, the outer bands of it, anyways), and there's
a good possibility that I could be without power for a few days...

Bowman qualifying second is really impressive though. Really, he SHOULD
have 3 top 10s in his 4 appearances in the #88 thus far, but
circumstances beyond his control took away two of those potential top
10s. As much of a Gordon fan I've been...well, all my life, I have to
admit Bowman's been a smidge more impressive in the #88 this year in
their dual substitute role. Surely Hendrick's gotta be taking good
notice of this kid-like I've said before, they definitely need to start
scouting out new talent. Bowman's a guy I think can be rather successful
in good equipment; he did better than James Buescher driving RAB Racing
equipment in Xfinity, and did a fairly solid job in low-budget BK Racing
and TBR equipment (plus he was never a wreck machine in those types of
rides). I'm personally really hoping Hendrick or some other good team
hires him for a full-time Cup rider in the future.

^That's...actually been kind of difficult to decide. It's probably
between McMurray, Truex (who unfortunately despite being one of the
nicer drivers has now entered the "SAME OLD SHIT" brigade in the minds
of some because he's started to win more), and Elliott right now, but
I'm not sure who I would pull for more if battling for the win. There
are other guys I like who will no doubt move up to Cup in the near
future (Darrell Wallace, Suarez, Nemechek-even if I still find what he
did in Canada to be one of the cheapest ways to win a race I've EVER
seen!), so...I guess I'll just have a bunch of favorites. Guess it makes
it easier when you have more than one driver you can pull for because
you're not TOTALLY stuck on one.

If it was just a question of merit he'd be in the #10 next season, he
outqualified the current driver by more that a quarter second per lap.

on qualifying day. She bested Paige White, the girlfriend of Brad
Keselowski, and
Haley Dillon, the wife of Ty Dillon.

We all know that Danica can drive cars better in easier conditions. You
better pray that the race runs Saturday night, because if they run it in

We all thought it was a dick move at the time (and it was) but Bowman
getting fired from TBR ended up being the best thing that ever happened
to him. If that never happened, he wouldn't be driving the 88 right now
and showing everyone how much potential he really has. Junior's other
replacement driver for the non-Gordon races would probably be Allgaier
or Sadler or even Regan Smith, or they'd just give Gordon the whole rest
of the schedule. And none of those guys (even though I really like
Allgaier and Smith) have as much potential in the long run as Bowman does.

No question that Penske should've kept Allgaier, but the window for him
getting a top cup ride has sadly passed. Bowman is 23, Allgaier is 30.
Like I said, I like Allgaier, but Bowman has way more potential in the
long run in my opinion.

Disagree on the whole Penske lost out on him. I think he's in the same
league as far as an Aric Almirola or Trevor Bayne. He isn't bad, but
Sadler is outrunning him in the 1.

@27: Well, yes, no shit. He's a team owner. That's how it works. He said
in an interview last year that if he could do things the way he wanted
do, he'd run Josh Berry full-time, and he'd keep both Smith and Allgaier
onboard. But he does sort of have to keep the team financially solvent
if he wants to keep running. That's not a dick move, that's staying in
business.

You must really be giving Danica a nice curve since she's a woman or
whatever. If Danica truly only deserves a "C" mark, then Biffle, Menard,
and Almirola should be at least "C-"

Roush has been down this year as a whole.
Childress has been quietly down again this year.
Richard Petty Motorsports has been awful...awful enough to where
Almirola's significantly better performance over Scott should reward him
with at least a C-

So...either lower Danica's mark, or cut Biffle, Menard and Almirola some
slack.

My main point was just Danica and her Stewart Hass Equipment compared to
the others. If Danica was drivng a Richard Petty car this year, she and
Scott would be neck and neck for 33rd. But luckily for her, she's with a

I am from Texas so I am naturally drawn to drivers from here. However,
in the ~10 year period that Bobby Labonte was the only Texas driver and
was uncompetitive, which was also when I started watching the sport, I
became a Dale Jr. fan. I have been following Chris Buescher's career
since ARCA and rooted for him up through the ranks, so naturally I am a
fan of his now.

Alex Bowman has 3 poles, 5 top 5s and 14 top 10s in 124 starts in NASCAR
(all of those for bad teams or part-time). He is only 23 years old.
Don't tell me he's bad.

As for the Smith/Allgaier thing, let's compare (full-time) stats.
Smith: 134 starts, 0 poles, 5 wins, 26 top 5s, 72 top 10s, 518 laps led,
13.1 avg. start, 13.4 avg. finish
Average rank for Smith: 7th
Allgaier: 170 starts, 4 poles, 3 wins, 29 top 5s, 84 top 10s, 617 laps
led, 12.7 avg. start, 12.6 avg. finish
Average rank for Allgaier: 5th
Their stats are almost the same, and when Allgaier brings full-time
sponsorship (and Smith brings none), that's a no-brainer.

Of course all the haters come out of the woodwork whenever I make a
post. I can't say anything nice about Danica on here can I? She's got a
ton of speed this weekend, actions are going to speak louder than words.

As for giving Danica an F for the season? That's a joke. Danica has ran
way better than her finishes say. She has been in position multiple
times for top 10's this season when she gets caught in someone's mess,
the pit crew has a bad stop or someone makes a bad adjustment. The only
times that it has been her part are having bad restarts at times.

Take it from someone who follows Danica, she has run way better than her
average finish indicates.

actually is a damn good qualifying run by Danica's standards and is her
best of the season on an oval.

She's still unlikely to finish on the lead lap unless it's a
caution-fest (and she avoids trouble) with a dozen instances of

A few qualifying notes:

-This is the first top 20 qualifying run for Ricky Stenhouse Jr. since
Pocono in early August.

-This is the worst starting spot for Kyle Larson and Kurt Busch since
Bristol in April.

-Danica gets her second top 20 qualifying result of the year, but this
is her first on an oval in 2016.

-A.J. Allmendinger will start 6th Saturday, this is his best qualifying
effort on a cookie cutter track this year so far.

-Alex Bowman gets his first front row start in Sprint Cup competition,
his previous best qualifying effort was 6th at Michigan in August.

-This is Matt Kenseth's worst starting spot since Indianapolis in July.

-Denny Hamlin STILL hasn't failed to advance to the final round of
qualifying this year after 30 races.

-This is Chase Elliott's best qualifying effort since his pole at
Talladega in May.

-This is Matt DiBenedetto's SIXTH time this season making it at least to
the second round of qualifying. He currently has more than Ragan's five.

-This is Aric Almirola's sixteenth time this season he's qualified
outside the top 25. His teammate Brian Scott has twenty four so far this
season.

OK, we just learned two more things about Danica10Racer:

A. He's strongly against having biases, yet he's heavily biased towards
Danica and heavily biased against every other driver, which makes him a
massive hypocrite

and B. He totally, completely does not understand sarcasm in any shape
or form.

Geez, at this rate, the next thing we'll learn is that he's jealous of
Stenhouse...Or he's gonna pull a Mannoroth and play the "U JUST JELLY"
card.

On the one hand, it seems like a WAY too hasty descision by NASCAR.
Scheduled start time is still more then EIGHT hours away.

On the other hand, forecasts say rain's not gonna stop until 9 PM, and
Sunday has 0% chance of rain.

Dennyfan, can you keep us posted tomorrow that the sun is still out? I
was disappointed that the sun peaked out at Dover last week and I wasn't
given advance warning.

Having this race on Columbus Day weekend probably also helped in
delaying the race a day so far in advance.

I like night races more than most people on this site but this is a race
that should probably be a day race. I've never been a fan of tracks
having both races at night.

Just my opinion, but Charlotte has arguably been one of/the worst on the
schedule the past few years as far as good racing goes since they
repaved the place. If it weren't for the place being in NASCAR country,
it would/should have been stripped of one of it's regular season races a
long time ago.

Moving to daytime certainly wouldn't hurt.

Like others, I hate the hurricane situation, but one good thing that
comes out of it is we get a day race at Charlotte (like it SHOULD be).
Seriously, why is this still a night race? I think everyone I know that
goes to this race complains about it being freezing, in addition to the
cold track hindering the quality of the race.

On another note, I am working on my personal Top 10 list of greatest
drivers ever, which I'm doing mostly because I'm bored and because I
think I'm about the only guy that's been here a while that hasn't yet.
I'm in a bit more of a racing mode now even though I haven't paid a lot
of attention this year (I admit I've commented on quite a few races
where I've barely watched any of the action) and even less after Jr's
injury. I should have it done in the next couple of weeks.

Lastly, I'm just curious, Long Shot who do you pull for now? I ask
because after the 2014 Daytona 500 you said you became a Jr. fan but
since then you haven't said much about who you like. No biggie, just
wondering.

I'm not a diehard Junior fan, but he's one of my favorite drivers
overall, certainly from a personality standpoint. Logano's been my guy
since Day 1. Ryan Blaney and John Hunter Nemechek are probably my two
other favorites as it stands.

Speaking of Logano, he's definitely gained some respect back from me
this year. Still don't like him, probably never will, but he's had a
very Brad Keselowski 2015-esque year where he's not been as dominant but
has stayed out of controversy compared to the previous year.

Chase Elliott seems to be the go-to guy for all the old Gordon fans, so
I imagine the same will be true for the Dale Jr fans as well seeing as
though they have the Hendrick/JRM connection (not to mention that
personality wise, Chase seems to be very similar to Jr - down to Earth,
super humble, self-deprecative at times, etc).

This "Joonyer" fan is already prepared for the future with Chase Elliott
as his next #1 guy (and current #1 guy until Jr. comes back). Kyle
Larson is and will continue to be a really fun driver to cheer for.
Truex and Harvick should still be around for a while as well. I'll miss
Dale of course, but there will be other drivers (and most importantly,
good racing) worth watching for.

Gordon was my guy, and I like several drivers now (McMurray, Harvick,
Logano, Edwards) but not enough to make them my absolute favorite. For
now, I'm a fan of the sport and I like it because you aren't being
blinded to pull for anyone and you can just appreciate the race for what
it is.

So, not sure if we've had this conversation before, but how did your
guy's said driver become your favorite?

Sometime during the 2004 season was when I first saw NASCAR on TV. All I
remember is my dad had just gotten to do an interview with Dale Jr., and
he was leading both the race and the point standings at the time. So
naturally he became my favorite although I didn't actually start
watching regularly until the 2007 season.

Several years later, the 2007 Daytona 500 was the race that got me
hooked. That was the race where I became a Harvick fan as well.
Throughout that season I started watching much more regularly and by the
end of the year I'd entered the die-hard NASCAR fandom stage of my life
that I'm still in today.

So there's my story to answer your question Maverick. You've probably
heard it all before.

When the Xfinity race starts at 4:30 p.m. eastern, It is going to be 73

76, I used to be a casual NASCAR fan as a kid. No favorites, I just like
to watch. Now I'm only that way with Indy and other non-NASCAR race
series I watch.

Yeah about that.... I find it really odd how they both literally had
seasons very identical back to back (Brad 2014 to Joey 2015, and Brad
2015 to Joey 2016). Maybe Joey will win the championship in 2018, 2
years after 2016 as Brad won his in 2012, 2 years before 2014.

Jeff Gordon was always my No. 1 guy, and since he retired (semi), I
haven't exclusively landed on a favorite driver, although Ryan Blaney is
really the guy I root for hardest. He just seems like a funny,
down-to-earth dude, and he's a hell of a wheelman to boot.

In fact, since Gordon has quit driving, my loyalties have pretty much
swayed from Hendrick to Penske, interestingly enough. I'm not sure why,
but guys like Blaney and Brad Keselowski just seem to ooze that
badassery that Dale Earnhardt had. They're not afraid to speak their
opinions (which, oddly enough, seems to turn many fans off) and they
race hard for every position. Plus, Keselowski is, in my opinion, one of
the smartest drivers in the garage for his outside-the-box thinking and
race strategy with crew chief Paul Wolfe.

I know how it feels I didn't comment much on a bunch of races last
season due to ongoing family member health issues.

I have 3 drivers I hardcore root for: Stewart, Harvick & Kyle Busch
(with way ahead in the #1 spot).
So next season Harvick will move to the top driver I root for but I'm
torn between Chase Elliott & Kyle Larson as my number 3 driver.

Yeah, I expected attendance to be better even if it's a rainout.

Attendance has been an embarrassment at many tracks this year. Maybe
that will warrant a change to the schedule so less tracks have 2 races
and new tracks/markets could gain a race.

I think the current tracks are locked in for the next 5 years, or until
2020.

But at the same time, tracks are losing a ton of attendance in NASCAR's
heartland. Charlotte, Atlanta, Dover, even Bristol have really been
struggling lately.

While the weather in the area and delay did this race no favors its
saddening to see the attendance at Charlotte over the past few years.

Last spring I watched the 1996 fall race that Terry Labonte won and the
track was packed.
And this is when it had more seating and close competition from 2
Rockingham & 2 North Wilkesboro races.

So Harvicks average finish in the regular season was 8th. If he finishes
where he is in the running order, his Chase average finish will be 24th.

Sorry to hear you're dealing with sad news, chevyfan98.

Just got home a little bit ago. I'm honestly expecting a lot of chaos
for the Chase drivers this round after there was almost nothing that
happened to cause them to finish poorly in the 1st round. Moldy Bread is
likely out with his troubles today, since he hasn't been contending for
wins all season though he's been very consistent.

I just don't understand the idea to take two tires. It's not like
there's five laps left or something. People are gonna be on the
anti-Truex bandwagon with this, but Dillon was destined to be a moving
chicane on that restart with only two tires.

Not Kyle's fault at all. Elliott went into the grass and merged into
traffic. Kyle could not have slowed up to let him back in or he'd have
gotten hit.

The Truex contact is harder to justify, but none of this would have
happened in the first place without double-file restarts...

And you know, if NASCAR always put the odd cars on the leader's side,
like they SHOULD, Elliott would not have crashed with the best car.

insofar that these incidents aren't unexpected.

Sean's right though. I'd say June Pocono and this race (and MAYBE the
second Michigan race) were the only races Chase had the best car (Logano
was better at June Michigan, Truex was better at Chicago). He's been in
contention of winning more races than that, but he's only been far and
away the best car two or three times at most.

Truex was fastest at Chicagoland, although yes, Elliott was in position
to win.
I'll give you spring Pocono as well, but Logano was easily the fastest
at spring Michigan and summer Michigan several drivers including Elliott
were roughly equally as fast...

"Sexually assaults the 24?" Chase got in the grass to avoid them
wrecking ahead of him, and Kyle also got damage. Nothing intentional
there, as that would imply.

Weird that if you're blaming drivers you're blaming Kyle (when Chase was
more at fault for their contact than Kyle was, although really I'd blame
neither driver) and not Truex...

These announcers are foolish. To think Jeff Gordon, Richard Petty,
others aren't in the race and the only one to come close to their
numbers (or have reached it) are Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart.
Everyone else has a lot of work to do, and Kyle Busch may join that
elite category by the time he retires.

Well the 48 team earned it, although I don't they deserve such a good
shot at the title after being so bad from spring all the way to the chase.

Surprising the amount of chase guys with issues, but it wasn't a

Jimmie Johnson has already been spanking fast at Chicago (despite being
winless, he's still lead more laps there than anyone else) and Dover,
and now Charlotte, his best tracks. Expect him to be back in form at
Martinsville (I hope Jeff Gordon pulls a major upset win there) and
Texas. Tough to tell who to be eliminated. Kevin Harvick will have to
win his FOURTH win of the year the next two weeks to keep going, and
with Talladega being a wildcard, he'll need to make some noise at Kansas
and survive Talladega, same with Logano.

Chase was running away from the field when he was out and Jimmie was

Lucky caution reverses track position and Jimmie is untouchable while

This was one of the best races on the track I remember seeing(other than
the non-points races) and it ended up being a battle of attrition with a
bunch of chasers running into trouble.

Also, how about people counting HMS out in the chase? Elliott had a
great car capable of winning today and the whole team had speed these
last 4 races. And if Buescher didn't make it into the chase Kahne would
have had a really good chance to make the round of 8 right now.

@437 I didn't say anything on here but I thought the same thing. Since
the second Michigan race it's been clear that HMS and the Chevy camp in
general has found a bunch of speed. I think the real story here is with
the JGR cars. While they haven't fallen on a cliff performance wise,
outside of Richmond race Denny won they haven't shown the raw speed they
had (and the 78 still seems to have) at the beginning of the year. It's
crazy to think but with the speed shown by Jimmie and Chase so far (heck
you can throw Bowman and Kahne in there too)I think you can make the
argument that they have gotten back in front of JGR.

@448 That was due to the cars being set up for pure speed, as opposed to
handling well, since the race was supposed to run at night. Same thing
happened in last year's race, but this year was better since they were
running a package that has often lended itself to good racing. That was
shown by stuff like the midway battle for the lead between Johnson,
Hamlin, Keselowski, and Elliott.

Harvick is actually in much better shape points wise with the current
system than he would under the non-elimination chase. He would be 81
points behind Kyle and 80 behind Truex. Only Chris Buescher has scored
fewer points among the 16 Chasers than Harvick in the 4 Chase races.

Under that system, there would be 5 guys with a legitimate shot at the
championship: Kyle, Truex, Kenseth, Keselowski, and Johnson.

Missed this race because, as I expected, Hurricane Matthew knocked out
the power where I live and I literally ONLY just got it back. So I got a

As much as I used to HATE that Jimmie Johnson dominated so much in the
latter part of the 2000s, I was actually pretty happy when he won today.

As others have said, don't count that 48 team out. Even though the last
two years have been rough, let's not forget that they are 6-time
champions. I could see them winning at either Martinsville or Texas next
round.

Wow, after looking at the highlights from this one, looks like I missed
a really interesting one. Lot of bad days for those still in the Chase!
Austin Dillon took a really hard shot in the big one on the restart. Too
bad for Chase Elliott, as well...but I do think eventually things are
gonna go that kid's way and he will find victory lane. Law of averages,
y'know. Also, looks like this was a race you did NOT want to be leading
for a lengthy amount of time-other than Johnson no one who led more than
a small handful of laps finished the race!

Sucks that Bowman crashed out, but he was running third at the time and
it was due to-again-circumstances beyond his control, a flat tire. Luck
has not been with him during his sub role in the #88, but he's run well
enough that he's surely had to catch Hendrick's attention. Of course,
Danica10Racer will say he crashed due to his lack of talent kicking in
and that Danica is the REAL hard luck driver (heck, I wouldn't be
surprised if he thought Danica should get the #88 if Junior retires).
Got a chuckle reading his comments saying she just got her first top 10
prematurely and then lost it on the last lap. Moral of the story is,
don't count your chickens before they hatch!

The law of averages was well in effect today For as bad as the Coca Cola
600 was, today's race I thought was pretty good. There was one point in
the race where we had I think Jimmie, Chase, Brad, and Denny all going
for the lead. That is one of those moments where the the 2015 package
would have had no passing at all, but those four were going at it lap
after lap!

Jimmie finally got his crap together today finally, and Martin was
veiled as human after all. Now all I want is for Chase to break through...

to get the power back with 35-40 degree nights and some people I work

This race is an example of why I hold firm in my belief that Danica will
never win a Cup race.

Even with good breaks (a lucky dog, a well timed wavearound, and a "big
one" that involves a lot of good cars), it still only adds up to an 11th
place finish. Hanging on to 10th wouldn't have changed my opinion,
either, it would only look a little better in the stats.

Tough day for Chase, Denny, Bowman, Harvick, and Logano. Ironic that
Joey wins the Xfinity end of the doubleheader.

Looking at the stats I've got to admit that I'm surprised that Kyle
Busch hasn't won at Charlotte, he has 10 top 5's, 15 top 10's, and
almost 1,000 laps led. Between that and Pocono, I have a feeling that

Mmm, that sounds like it must have been a really pleasant experience.
I'd have to say we got really lucky only having the power out for a
little over a day. Went to town today to buy some supplies since my
family anticipated the power being out even longer, and there were tons
of pecan and palm trees down all over the place and many power lines
either knocked down or slung down to the ground. Some folks around my
area definitely won't be getting power back for the better part of the
week...Also consider myself fortunate that there was no major damage to
my home, which is always a plus.

Even though I missed the race, gotta say it's...surprising how much
Johnson winning no longer really bothers me anymore. Maybe it's as
others says, he's in the latter stage of his career where as he gets
older wins will be harder to come by. Considering we've had some fairly
repetitive winners lately (Truex, Hamlin, and Harvick racking up
multiple wins), a Johnson win feels almost...refreshing. And it's
strange as all hell saying that, considering...this is JOHNSON we're
talking about. I really didn't think I would ever find myself saying
this, but well...here we are.

I can't be the only one thinking now that Johnson is probably going to
make it to the final 4? His season is oddly looking kind of reminiscent
of Gordon's farewell tour last year, looking largely so-so to mediocre
in the regular season, then stepping it up come Chase time and turning
things around. Like Gordon last year...I would not be surprised if he
won (most likely at Texas, again, because he always seems to win the
Fall race there) in the third round or pointed his way through to
Homestead. The mistakes that team has made in races where they've been
competitive recently is one way they could wind up faltering, however.

get extremely intense at the end of each race if Hamlin, Harvick,

Honestly if Kyle were to win at Charlotte, I'd want him to win the Coke
600, not during the Chase (aka this race). Let's not forget that he's
not only missing that, but the Daytona 500 AND the All-Star non-point
event win as well. He's been so close at Pocono just as much as
Charlotte; Losing out a fuel mileage race when Kenseth won his first
Pocono race in 2015, and finishing 2nd in a tight battle with Brad
Keselowski back in 2011. Though Pocono is typically another
Kansas/Michigan race track where he just doesn't finish well at all most
of the time.

It's pretty strange Kyle won the pole at both of these tracks TWICE, yet
to win. He still has 10 tracks he has yet to win poles at also.

I honestly would like Kyle to achieve the most points in a year, most
wins, most poles and most Top 10's in a year. He could easily get the
wins column if he can somehow pull a season sweep at Kansas next week
and perhaps win another since he is tied with Truex AND Keselowski
currently with 4 (I feel this may be another 2011 repeat, when Harvick
and Ky. Busch won 4 heading into the Chase, going unless while Stewart
won 5 of 10 races. Truex has won 2 of 4 so far this year to tie them...)

I don't think the poles should matter as much to Kyle in Xfinity series,
despite the fact he hasn't won any on Restrictor Plate races. It's
obvious he doesn't want to race those anymore in the lower series (Why
should he? He won both Daytona and Talladega in NASCAR's all three
series already). Especially after his injury from last season, to
minimum his chances of getting injured again.

I also wanted to point this out. I'm surprised Truex wasn't any stronger
in today's race, especially after his utter dominance leading 392 of 400
laps at this racetrack back in May.

Since the Chase began, Kevin Harvick had an 8.6 average finish position.
Now he has dropped that to a 10.5. That is due to a 20th at Chicago, a
win at New Hampshire, 37th at Dover and a 38th here at Charlotte.

Brad Keselowski now remains the only driver in the single digit decimal
at 9.1. He may be well on his pace to scoring the most points this year
for the 2nd time of his career (2012 being his first, when he won his
championship), as well as Roger Penske's 2nd ever points scored.

Jimmie Johnson's win in this race decreases the deficit of 25 more
victories until Hendrick Motorsports catches Petty Enterprises' 268
total. HMS now has 243. I predict this to be achieved in 2020.

Of course, but is that the team's fault or Patrick's fault? SHR builds
fast cars; Harvick and Busch are consistent front runners. Stewart and
Patrick do not run nearly that well. Stewart recognizes that he is not
the driver he once was and is retiring. I think Patrick's lack of speed
can be attributed to a lack of skill as well.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Patrick pulls off a fuel mileage
or rain delay win at some point. Even a plate race win is not out of the
question. But I doubt she'll ever be a consistent front runner. She's
never shown that kind of talent. Occasionally a driver will bloom late
in a career (Dale Jarrett comes to mind) but that is rare.

3 crew chiefs in 4 years at SHR.

Needs more experience, but yet has ran only 3 Xfinity races since she
went full time in Sprint Cup (those 3 being plate races). Maybe with SHR
fielding the 00 for Custer next season, they can have a part time car.

23 of the 30 race wins this year have come from a driver starting in the
top 16 and 19 of those 23 from a driver in the top 10. She has 3 top 16
starts in 30 races this year and no starts better than 11th, so how
exactly are you supposed to get top 5's and 10's, let alonecontend for
wins when you aren't qualifying/running top 10 every week?


In Danica's Cup career, she's had just one 22 race stretch where her
cars measured up to the rest of her teammates (2014 - average start of
18.5, 12 top 16 starts, 3 top 10 finishes in 22 races) and she ran fine,
but Kurt struggled with Knost and SHR made the CC swap with
Gibson/Knost, however not only did they swap crew chiefs, they also gave
him all the newer cars she was using in that 22 race stretch while she
got stuck with cars and a crew chief Kurt hated.


The result since the CC swap in 2014 - Just 9 top 16 starts in the last
69 races for Danica and 2 top 10's, but I do think they have found the
right combination at CC for her in Billy Scott though and they've
started to show that in the last 5 races.

were rained out and postponed until Monday, then Talladega I had a
Sunday doubleheader when the Nationwide race was postponed until after
the Cup race.

Side note, but I think this was probably Ryan Newman's best race all
season. The only other races I can think of where he had any kind of
performance like that were Kentucky, Darlington, and Michigan.

In this one, however, he worked his way up to second or third at one
point and even looked like he was gonna challenge for the lead, as
opposed to Kentucky and Darlington where he was aided by pit strategy,
and Michigan where he fell back towards the end.

She never ran "fine". In 2014, her best year, she only scored 3 top 10
finishes and finished 28th in points, that same year Kevin Harvick won
the championship.

And the "new crew chief" is showing nothing, she's still struggling in
mid-field, only finishing 11th due to attrition, she was running around
20th before the big one.

Damon, you're just begging the question. Sure, Patrick neither qualifies
well nor does she finish well. The question still remains - is that
Patrick's fault or the team's fault?

Harvick and Busch have no problems qualifying and finishing well but
Stewart and Patrick, in the same equipment, do. Stewart accepts
responsibility for his poor performance. I think Patrick must as well.

I dont know why so many people argue over danica, the proof is in the
pudding. We could sit an make the same arguments for chad little, kevin
lepage, wally dallenbach, or any number of countless mid pack drivers
who couldnt perform to the standards of their big team teammates through
the years.
Bill Parcells used to say you are what your record says you are. With
danica thats cut and dry shes a mid pack driver with a top tier team who
either is getting really good cars and cant put finishes together or is
getting the tail end stuff but if shes getting the worst shr equipmen.
If its the latter it shows how talented the team ownership group thinks
she is. Look what kurt busch did with her team after the swap.

What leads you to conclude this, Damon?

Harvick and Busch don't seem to be held back by an underperforming SHR
team so why would Patrick be? I suppose it might be because Harvick and
Busch are getting the best people while Patrick and Stewart have to make
do with the castoffs. But what would be the point of that? A competitive
Patrick would be a license to print money for SHR. And why would Patrick
tolerate it? She can run midpack for any number of teams like Ganassi,
Childress, Petty, Roush, maybe even Penske. If she thought SHR was
holding her back she could fold up her tent and go elsewhere just like
Sadler has done in the Xfinity series where it seems he changes teams
every year.

The simplest explanation is that Patrick is a poor driver compared to
her competition. I'm not a Patrick basher by any means but I really
don't see any reason to doubt that this is the case.

Would anyone here have a rational business reason for SHR to withhold
good equipment from Danica if she was equal in talent to their other
drivers? One Cup win by her, at any track, under any circumstances
(fuel, weather, attrition) would be a great thing for the organization.

I didn't hear a lot of people saying Paul Menard was as good as Harvick
but was getting screwed out of good equipment when they were both at
RCR. He got rides by bringing sponsors and improved over time, but we
accepted that his ceiling was not a high as Kevin's, it just was what it
was.

Why is it so hard for Danica fans to accept the difference in results is
a product of the driver?

put him up there with Carl Edwards as the runner behind the front
runners, but ahead of Stewart and Danica. Kurt doesn't usually run that

Shocked that Newman is returning. I thought he was a goner for sure. But
yeah, Ty will definitely get some type of RCR Cup ride (either the #95
or they'll just attempt to run the #33 full time). He's been pretty much
begging for a Cup ride all year, and in his post-Chase elimination
interview yesterday he kind of implied that this year was his last
chance at an NXS title, so one way or another I think it's happening.

I wonder what's gonna happen at HScott now. I would have THOUGHT Newman
would replace Bowyer there if he left RCR, but now that's not happening.
Hell, maybe RCR will buy them up and Ty will drive the #15...

Because she doesn't have the resume Kevin/Kurt do to demand better from
the team, plus the people who eventually sponsor Danica are in it for
building their brand more than results, so SHR doesn't really feel any
heat to make sure she's competitive (top 10-15 weekly)

I know. I was just speculating that maybe RCR will bring them over to
their camp and put Ty in the #15 since it's a guaranteed opening next
year with Bowyer moving on. I realize they have no affiliation currently
and that overall it's a long shot.

If I had to guess though, Ty will probably drive the #95 for Leavine
full time.

Damon, Patrick has something at least as good as, if not better, than a
resume; she has a sponsor that has money. She has plenty of leverage

Surely "building their brand" has some correlation with Patrick's on
track performance. It is in her sponsors' interests for Patrick to do as
well as possible. At the very least, her sponsors would want their money
to go to Patrick and not her teammates.

I think the situation boils down to this.

Fact: Patrick is performing poorly. Her fans and critics seem to agree
on this. There seems to be two competing explanations for this poor
performance:

A. Patrick is a poor driver compared to her competition.

B. SHR is taking Patrick's sponsorship money and spending it on her
teammates, leaving her with the crumbs. Patrick and her sponsors have
accepted this situation for obscure reasons.

I don't think you can dismiss those who think explanation A is the more
likely as a bunch of sexists Patrick haters.

black and white so I've got to say that I don't think it looks that
good. The 2014 car still looks the best.

Paul is under contract with RCR in 2017 and he said that on September

Looks like Cat Dealers was the major reason why Newman got a extension
in there history in sponsorship they never had a driver under 30 so
clearly Newman was a better fit for the sponsor than Ty was.

Secondly I think Menard will be back at RCR.

And I to believe now Ty will be in the #95 full time next year which I
think is better for him.

As for McDowell who's basically having a career year well who knows
where he ends up but he's fully deserving of a ride.

Another weak regular season is behind Jimmie Johnson, which means he can
finally start his engine properly and be good in the Chase... like
usual. It was still just a matter of time when he wins with that Chase
performance. And no surprise why he was horrible in the regular season
and is now a legitimate title contender. Like Kyle Busch said last year
- "Everyone already knows he's playing that game again. Don't get
fooled." And he won at Texas despite not being in the Chase.

All the hints have been Ty Dillon going to Cup for 2017, so with Ryan
Newman renewing at RCR, the #95 is the logical place.

McDowell has some sponsorship (K-Love) that seems pretty loyal to him
personally, though, so IDK what happens with that if this is a full time
deal for Ty.

Childress hasn't really sounded like he wants to run a fourth RCR car
that soon.

Aside from the #95 LFR car, the Tommy Baldwin team ran Ty for one start,
so they might be the longshot destination.

Always hard to watch a race when the best car doesn't win. Still can't
figure out why Johnson wouldn't take the opposite row to try and help
out Chase on that deal.

That being said Chase reminds me of the struggle his father had to get
his first win. Bill was damn near finishing second every other week
before he won at Riverside. Unreal how many times Chase has had a car
capable of winning and something went wrong.

I don't know how many races Chase has had the best car but he sure as
hell has been the best car at the end of three of the four Chase races
minus Loudon, and he was capable of a top 5 there without the cautions
at the end. He was clearly the best car at Chicagoland but it took his
car a few laps to get going. He was by far the best car late in Dover as
he went from 19 seconds back to under 12 seconds on the last run. He was
faster than Truex and Busch. When he needed a caution he couldn't get
one. He was by far the best car at Charlotte.

So what is the MO with teams when it comes to getting other teammates
into the Chase....in other words...if a JGR teammate has a win and right
behind him there is a teammate who wrecked the week before and needs a
win, does the guy leading let his teammate win? Has this situation ever
came up before?

not Menard is signed next year, because that could be a possibility.
They could run the 33 car full-time for him, or I suppose he could
replace Mears (or Smith, but that doesn't seem likely because the 7 is a
back marker and has little to no sponsorship). I think the most likely
scenario is that Ty will replace Michael McDowell in the 95, and that's
why they've made the crew chief change. McDowell could run the 59 car
full-time (or part-time), or he could go to a different team or Xfinity
for Childress.
