He might have backed off a bit in the second round and the combination of that and having a warm car led to a significantly slower lap. I believe they said there was no power steering in the car, they just wanted to stick it in the show and he sure did that. The big story is Truex having parts confiscated, a big penalty could be in order there. Roush unsurprisingly shows their speed at a plate track with all regular drivers making the final round and Ryan Reed placing inside the top 20 in his Sprint Cup debut. 14. He was using a special qualifying setup because he is one of the open teams. This used to happen all the time, most notably in this same race nine years ago, where the top ELEVEN qualifiers were all go-or-go-homers under the top 35 rule, leading to drivers who qualified inside the top ten DNQing (fun fact: the pole in that race was won by a #55 Toyota). Now what I don't understand is once they got him in the next round, why not go for the pole? It seemed like all they cared about was getting him in the race and didn't even try in the second round. It would've been awesome if he won the pole, but oh well. 17. This is one place where literally almost everyone could win and almost everyone could come out of here with a terrible finish. Aren't they swapping this race's date with the second Kansas event next year? I would be OK with that as it would least give you one chance to pull yourself out of a hole you might get in here... As for the race itself, I'm gonna echo chevyfan and a few others. Let us have a controversy-free, safe race with no horrifying last lap crash featuring a car flying into the catchfence or somebody intentionally trying to cause the big one to save their Chase chances...The Chase so far has been surprisingly without much in the way of controversy, much unlike the last two years this format was used. Plus he's got Phoenix in the next round (and he can certainly win Martinsville and Texas easily as well). But it'll be interesting to see if this win propels Logano into another run like he went on last year. Not to mention he'll be Penske's primary focus with Keselowski out. They're also the only two drivers who seem to know how to work 2 sometimes even 3 lanes at a time when they're out front. I'm not saying everyone else sucks, but they're not on those two's level. (Minus Harvick being an ass and punching out his own teammate. Let's hope this doesn't lead to something down the road...!) Well, I'm not exactly enthralled with a Logano win, but hey, he did win this one fair and square without controversy this time. No complaints there. Like everyone else I thought for sure Keselowski was going to win this one, but he stayed out there too long with garbage on the grill and when he finally let Blaney get in front of him to help get it off, it was too late to save his engine. Brad and Truex missing the cut REALLY throws a huge monkey-wrench into my Chase predictions; I thought for SURE 1 of these 2 would be a part of the final four. The JGR brigade-minus Hamlin-rode around in the back all day long and it paid off for them; I was kind of hoping it wouldn't because while I understand it's not ILLEGAL to do that and they were in a position after the first two races of this round to do so...that's pretty much them completely throwing away one whole race on their part. At least Johnson and Harvick, who both entered this race knowing they were going to Round 3 for sure, showed up and tried today. Not a huge fan of that strategy and I cannot imagine it being fun in the slightest trying to race like that. And...Brian Scott finished second. I actually thought for a moment on the last lap that he was going to win the race. I know I said this before, but...Brian Scott finishing second? After the season he's had? I know it's a plate race, but still...*Twilight Zone theme plays* Mind you, I don't DISLIKE Scott, but I really thought he would do a fair bit better this year than he has. Hopefully the fact that both Petty cars got top 10s will be a good confidence booster for them; I think they both CAN do a lot better than they have been. Well, like I said...I'm just glad this race didn't have a massive controversy overshadow it like last year's race. Really, the Chase this year has been...pretty tame through the first two rounds. I would add Kyle Busch to Logano and Harvick, he's had a great year. I would hate to see Johnson win it the most out of the remaining 8 because he took sandbagging during the regular season to the whole new level. Part of me wants to see Johnson win the title this year because of the amount of butthurt I know we would hear from him winning #7 and tying the record, but this has been one of his worst years ever. Someone, I forgot who it was, said it best a few months ago after Buescher won. Every year a new flaw is exposed in this chase system. In 2014 Newman just about trolled his way to the championship. Last year Kyle Busch won the championship while missing 1/3 of the season. This year Chris Buescher made the chase even though he's barely in the top 30 in points. That would look something like this: 1 plate race, 7 intermediate races, 2 short track races They could also do it evenly between the different track types: 2 plate races, 2 intermediate (1-1.5 mile) races, 2 intermediate (2-2.5 mile) races, 2 short track races, 2 road courses; I'd be in this camp. However, I still think the best thing they could do would be to get rid of the Chase. Also, I like Talladega being an elimination race. If we're going to have this format, which is a crapshoot anyways, why not make it even more interesting by doing that. 696. chevyfan98 posted: 10.24.2016 - 12:11 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) Twelve years ago today, we lost ten members of Hendrick Motorsports in a tragic plane crash, including Rick Hendrick's brother John and son Ricky. In the 2007 Aaron's 499, Stewart crashed out under caution with 2 to go on a GWC. Harvick, being buddy buddy with Stewart at the time, started banging McMurray's car on the cool down laps (why...) because he thought that he wrecked Tony. (The reality was it was a strange situation with McMurray and Gilliland that caused Stewart to crash). So yeah, by punching Kurt Busch for probably an accidental bump he's pretty much proved he's a hypocrite at least in that regard. Again, fantastic driver, but his thought process is very bizarre... 699. someone posted: 10.24.2016 - 12:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Also, I like Talladega being an elimination race. I actually like what NASCAR is doing next year (from an entertainment perspective); making Talladega the second race in the round, instead of the elimination race. It means every team is going to have to go all out for the win, as opposed to ride in the back all day like Ky. Busch, Edwards, and Kenseth did yesterday; because no one will amass a large enough points cushion, and there will still be one more race where anything can happen; making the strategy unviable. 700. murb posted: 10.24.2016 - 12:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "IMO Hamlin or Edwards would be more deserving than Logano because they've contended to win way more races." They've contended to win WAY more races? I wouldn't say that. They've had the strongest cars so they've been naturally more dominant than Logano has been this year, but all in all I'd say all three of them have been relatively equal all year. And even then, Logano has surely been the most consistent of the three (he has 22 top tens, second most in the entire series behind only Harvick). As far as "most deserving" goes, I'd absolutely have Logano third behind Harvick and Kyle at this point. I think he's been the most underrated driver in Cup this year for sure. In comparison to the last two years (where he won a lot more races) he's just seemed way quieter, but when you look at the numbers he's been extremely rock solid all season. He's on pace to have more top fives and top tens than he did in 2014 (when he did make the Final Four and would have been a worthy champion) and almost as many top tens as he had last year. And yeah, Kurt Busch would definitely be the lamest champion this year, but even still I don't think he'd be as bad as Newman/Hamlin in 2014 or Gordon last year would have been. 701. I'd say Carl has contended for way more wins than Logano and Hamlin. Carl contended at: Phoenix, Texas, Bristol 1, Richmond 1, Dover 1, Sonoma, Kentucky (only at the end), Watkins Glen (or at least led every lap from the pole until his pit crew screwed him, and then got involved in a minor wreck), and Kansas 2; so depending on how you look at it, Carl contended in seven to nine races this season. Carl had a driver rating > 100 in 17 races, and > 120 in 5 races. Hamlin contended at: Daytona 1, Sonoma, Watkins Glen, Richmond, and Charlotte 2, so about five races. Denny had a driver rating > 100 in 15 races, and > 120 in 3 races. Logano contended at: Vegas, Michigan 1, Pocono 2, and Talladega 2, so about four races (I'll admit I don't pay much attention to Logano so I could be missing some). Logano had a driver rating > 100 in 16 races, and > 120 in only 2 races. NASCAR said the Gibbs cars didn't violate the rule by sandbagging and finishing 28th-30th. This shows a massive problem with the current chase system. So many times this year, I've seen drivers "point racing" and not giving their all on every lap so they didn't lose anything. Before any of the Chase formats, drivers would give their all, because their could be a difference in the year-long standings. Now, if they don't have the car to win, and are running back end of the top 10, why would they if they are in good shape (i.e. already won, much higher in points). They have an advantage of being complacent. Before the Chase, if someone was in 10th, they would give their all to get to 9th, because it might make a difference in the standings at year's end. 716. that e-guy posted: 10.24.2016 - 4:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @704 That will most likely happen since he's in the #30 car. Individual races don't really seem to matter anymore, it's all about the title and only about the title. In the old days drivers cherry picked races and would have KILLED to win the Daytona 500, Southern 500, World 600,etc. and even after the championship became the primary objective they were still big deals. Each event used to be like a mini-Woodstock, and points didn't really matter to most, all the drivers cared about was getting those race trophies,(notice also how the majority of trophies have shrunk btw) but now it seems like every race is but just a simple means to an end. 719. As bad as the Latford system was, it produced many close championship races. 1979, 1980, 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1992, just to name a few. Not to mention the prospect of a driver rallying back from a large points deficit (Kulwicki in 1992) or potentially choking away the title or otherwise fading down the stretch (Allison in 1981 and 1982, Waltrip in 1985, Gordon in 1996). Excitement during the title run can happen organically, too. Furthermore, I am convinced that if NASCAR dumped the Chase and instead completely revamped the points system to reward wins and top-fives and take the negative impact away from poor finishes, deficits would be more easily overcome, leading to closer points battles more frequently. 731. Don't get me wrong, the Latford system was well-intentioned and a much-needed change over the years leading up to 1975, but it gave far too many points to mid-pack finishes and not enough to top-fives and top-tens, which is why we ended up with seasons like 1985 and 1996 where the best driver and team were left empty-handed (1985 could be debated, but 1996 seems pretty egregious). Denny Hamlin led 12 laps. 12/188 = .06, so he would recieve only 1 point for a total of 64. Kurt Busch recieves 57, Stenhouse 53 (1 bonus point for leading 3% of the laps), Larson 47, Harvick 43, Almiorla 39, Dillon 36, Allmendinger 31, Blaney 29, Elliott 26, Menard 22, Newman 19, Biffle 17, McDowell 13, Bayne 10, Bowyer 7, McMurray 4, and Danica 1. Kenseth, Edwards, Kyle Busch, Stewart, and Annett would all recieve 1 point for leading a small amount of laps, and Truex would get 2 points, one for leading and one for the pole. The dash 4 cash restrictions and chase restrictions are nice but I have a feeling that Nascar kept Busch's journey to 200 total wins intact. They keep wanting to push that as a huge accomplishment to get publicity but its like being the minor league home run king. Who cares. 742. 02Justin10 posted: 10.26.2016 - 9:51 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Good...now if at track attendance and TV viewership for the Xfinity races continues to suck in a couple years, we will know for sure it wasn't the Cup drivers "ruining" the Xfinity Series. 743. I actually think this will slightly help the Xfinity series and slightly hurt the Truck series, because guys like Busch/Keselowski/Logano will run more Truck races since they can't run Xfinity races. At least the Xfinity Dash4Cash races & the Xfinity/Truck chases will be awesome next year (unless Blaney or Dillon steps in). That's where this rule really fails, because you have to have 5 full-time seasons to qualify for the rule. So that would allow Ryan Blaney, Chris Buescher, Jeffrey Earnhardt, Chase Elliott, Brian Scott, Brett Moffitt, Matt DiBenedetto, Jeb Burton, Alex Kennedy, Kyle Larson, Austin Dillon, Justin Allgaier, Cole Whitt, Michael Annett, Alex Bowman, Ryan Truex, Parker Kligerman, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Danica Patrick and Timmy Hill to be exempt from the rule. Of course, some of those guys probably need the extra races, but most don't (though some are not full-time Cup or are full-time in another series). And Blaney will probably pick up races in the 22, while Elliott will pick up races in the 88. Larson will be unrestricted in the 42 and Dillon will most likely pick up races in the 33. So no, the problem isn't fixed, but it's getting there. Baby steps. And for the record, this would be like setting the minor league home run record WHILE YOU PLAYED FULL-TIME IN MLB! And then combining the two totals and saying it is worth as much or more as the major league record. 745. However, it needs some work. 5 years still means that we will get a ton of Dillon, Larson, and Blaney dominating for the next couple years because they aren't affected by the rule yet. It also means that the star cars of the 18 and 22 will simply put a variety of Cup drivers picking up the slack instead of just one. However, the absence of them in the Chase and the Dash4Cash races is a good move, we will see the regulars when they matter the most. Ironically, the Chase might have helped saved this series... If I had to make one tweak, not only is the limit 10 races for drivers, but for TEAMS. So the 18 team could only get 10 races with a Buschwhacker in the car, whether it be Busch, Hamlin, Kenseth, etc. That way the 18 and 22 can't run a variety of Cup drivers in the car to even out the restrictions. 749. chevyfan98 posted: 10.26.2016 - 11:10 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) One of the best decisions NASCAR has made in years. Last time they were in a situation like this was with Rockingham. The fans kept begging NASCAR to bring it back and saying they'd go to the race if they did. So NASCAR listened, they gave the Rock a truck race and after 2 years they got rid of it because no one was showing up. The point of me bring this up is that a lot of the people who wanted a limit used they argument that they'd watch more if less Cup guys were there and even though there is one now i feel a lot of them still wont watch. On top of that this has the potential to backfire and cripple the lower series (more so Xfinity than Trucks) financially. A lot of people seem to think if there's less Cup drivers that sponsors would move to other teams, which I don't think is realistic. Those big sponsors are either just gonna leave the sport, follow their driver to the Cup series, or force the Cup owners to use multiple Cup driver so instead of getting say Kyle in the car for 22 races you get a mix of Kyle, Denny, Carl, and Matt in which case what is this rule even accomplishing because you're still gonna have Cup guys winning the majority of the races As for the smaller teams in the series if ratings and attendance doesn't go up there's a chance that less companies would want to invest in the series as a whole which could lead to smaller race purses and less money overall for the teams. I think the real problem in this series hasn't been the Cup guys stealing wins, It's that it's so freaking expensive to run in this series now that the smaller teams have no chance to contend on a weekly bases. If NASCAR really wants to fix the problems the Xfinity series has they should be looking for ways to reduce costs. Not run away a bunch of drivers that bring in revenue because the fans don't like it when a Cup driver *coughKYLEcough* wins almost every race. 764. JSPorts posted: 10.26.2016 - 2:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) You're right, there is still a huge loophole for Cup drivers to run almost all the races. But still, this is a positive step. There are still enough races for Cup guys that a sponsor would fund them and a younger driver (if you buy into that). And the problem with expenses exists in every series, certainly not just Xfinity. The truck series has survived and thrived even when the Cup drivers stopped running so many races, so I really don't think that would kill the series. And I can only speak for me, but when I see an Xfinity race on the schedule for the day, a lot of times I won't watch at all or only watch the last few laps if there are Cup drivers (especially the ones that win all the time) in the race. It's just boring racing because they're so far ahead of the field unless there's manufactured drama, which I don't like either. 765. I'd buy into it if I hadn't seen teams like Penske continue to run Brad and Joey over Ryan Blaney in the majority of race over the last few seasons. Sadly the Owners can't control what the sponsors want and I still think it's more likely we'll see cup drivers in the cars for almost all the races they're allowed to do. "And the problem with expenses exists in every series, certainly not just Xfinity. The truck series has survived and thrived even when the Cup drivers stopped running so many races, so I really don't think that would kill the series." It helps the Truck series only runs 23 time a year not 33 like the Xfinity series. It makes it a lot easier to run in that series. Reducing the number of races in the Xfinity series would probably help thew smaller teams a lot more than limiting Cup drivers, but due to things like the TV contracts I feel the chance of that happening are slim. 766. He's one away from hitting the "10 Wins at a single track" mark at Phoenix, and in a couple of weeks he'll go for it, if not, you can bet he'll race there next season. Otherwise, I think he'll arrange his starts at Texas, Charlotte, and maybe both Richmond races to hit 10 wins at each as well, since he has 8 at all of them (6 at Richmond and that's one of his favorite tracks alongside Bristol). I do agree with who said that NASCAR sort of want Kyle to hit that 100 wins in the Xfinity series (200 across all three series), so this is why the limit isn't that "limited" if you look into it. It is ridiculous how much it costs to go to either one of these series races. Not really that much less than a Cup race(I went to a Truck race at Martinsville a couple of years ago and it cost 30 dollars apiece (about 90 total for me and my parents), when we could have paid around 45 dollars apiece and got decent seats for the Cup race, which is 60% longer and obviously much more prestigious. And the tracks don't really offer good package deals, which when combined with the absurd rates area hotels charge on race weekends (which should be illegal btw) offers zero incentive for people to go to more than one race. When compared to the price of most Minor League baseball teams, and the prices of Saturday night short track programs(you can see about 4-5 hours of racing action for 10$ at mine), there are simply far better sporting options for people to see semi-grassroots competition. While they did take a step in the right direction by making 12 and under admittance free, that still doesn't help the rest of us. Part of the atrocious attendance can be fixed with more reasonable ticket prices. But obviously, that isn't going to happen. 771. JSPorts posted: 10.26.2016 - 9:15 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I agree, the tickets are insane, but if you think about it, a track has only 1-2 opportunities to make money from tickets while a minor league team has around 50 opportunities. Now I'm not saying that means the races should be priced 25x as much, because there are so many more seats at races, but when they don't have a good product on the track fewer people buy tickets. So it's kind of a Catch-22. 772. Maverick posted: 10.27.2016 - 12:46 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) It's basically supply and demand. When the product is good, people are willing to pay more, but when declines happen, you have to lower the costs to try and bring back customers again. But the tracks can't afford to lower the prices because then they won't make enough money. So basically we're stuck in a cycle until attendance begins to increase. 773. And it's likely that their starts would be transferred to Denny Hamlin (Busch) and Ryan Blaney (Logano/Keselowski). I'd be ok with some kind of rule that would allow Cup rookies to run Truck races and Cup rookies & 2nd-year drivers to run Xfinity races. Race fans everywhere would cheer if NASCAR instituted a total ban on Cup drivers in lower series, but that's not the sole issue; you could put three semi-trained monkeys in the JGR/KBM rides and they'd still win most races easily in that equipment. I would imagine we'll see Busch in the 18 for 10 races, I bet Jones will run the remaining 18-23 races, with the possibility of Owen Kelly and/or Drew Herring at the standalones. 793. To the surprise of all Scott announced his retirement from competition after the 2016 season so his rookie season as a full-time Cup racer would be his only one. This was the only time he finished any Cup racer in a position higher than 12th. 794. chevyfan98 posted: 11.27.2016 - 7:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Possibly the last race for Bobby Labonte. 795.
