If there's one non-plate track he's consistently good at, its Martinsville. Could be a guy to watch on Sunday. AJ Allmendinger also with another strong run. I expect a non-chaser to win this weekend to continue the pattern of the last two years. Probably will be Truex or Keselowski, but I wouldn't be surprised if its AJ. His career best non-road course finish is here, second twice (side note: I was there for both of those races). And now for the big story... Growing up, Jeff Gordon was the guy I loved to cheer against. Then, just as I was starting to warm up to him, he sent my respect level back years by dumping Bowyer at Phoenix (and then proceeding to win the next race, which NASCAR should've parked him for). It wasn't until it seemed like too late when I finally got to the point where I wouldn't cheer against him on the track anymore. Which is why I was extremely happy that he came back for some races this year... although not under the circumstances I'd like, obviously. So, one last time... (that is, unless he comes back again) Go Gordon! 4. Tide1732 (Danica Wes Grosselin) posted: 10.28.2016 - 6:58 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) And Finally is a last career cup start for Jeff Gordon. 5. (that is, unless he comes back again)" It's moment like these where people should just realize it was in the heat of the moment and, sure they are meant to be the "golden boys" to represent the sport and crowd with complete respect, but he's human like the rest of us. Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with what he did, I find it really foolish to turn and hate on a driver just because of one mistake for the rest of their career, then change their view on them. I've seen over the years of being here that people are always back and forth between this driver and that guy. Jeff Gordon's not a criminal, he's a human being. He make mistakes. He's not God. Retaliation comes and go. Matt Kenseth got cheered, Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch got booed. Let's move on. On a side note, Jeff Gordon will finally start in the Top 10 for the first time in the 2016 season, in what will most likely be in his final career start. Let's hope he can turn that into a Top 10 (if not Top 5 or maybe a win, which could be his TENTH career win at Martinsville), with some laps led. If Jeff scores a Top 10, he will surpass the tiebreaker with Richard Petty with the most Top 10's ever at Martinsville at the Sprint Cup level (both currently with 37 Top 10's), however Jeff will need to score one more Top 5 to tie Richard Petty for 30 Top 5's. Martin Truex Jr winning the pole prevents Joey Logano from winning his FOURTH consecutive Pole here at Martinsville. This is also Martin Truex Jr's 5th Pole (Career High) of the 2016 season. He is one away from tying Carl Edwards. He will have to win TWO more poles due to Carl Edwards' four second place starting position and Truex has qualified second twice (qualifying set via rain doesn't count, otherwise he actually has three from Dover earlier in the Chase). With Homestead and Texas still brewing, and perhaps Phoenix, will Martin win his first ever Pole Award of the season, or will Carl Edwards defend his second? Carl also won in 2011 with 3 poles. The biggest question for the following three weeks: Will we have a major controversy among our Chasers? It wasn't until Texas that we had a Brad Keselowski vs Jeff Gordon in 2014, and it wasn't until Martinsville in 2015 that we had a crazy scene of Matt Kenseth crashing out Joey Logano due to their incident from Kansas weeks before (Brad vs Matt Kenseth at Charlotte in 2014 from the previous round also in 2014, but nothing major happen outside of the ridiculous Kevin Harvick vs Kurt Busch disagreement at Talladega)... Stay tuned! 9. Of course, I've found the #88 to be the most definitive hard-lucked car in the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, regardless of who was driving it. The withdrawing of Whitt once more was totally not what I thought would happen at all, and I've got to say that if I were Jay Robinson, the #55 would be much better to withdraw, as it initially had 5 less attempts than the #98 up until the Talladega race last week. Now it looks like the #55 is the main choice of car entering for Robinson - who I feel is not as smart as he was in owning a NASCAR team before his own team became dubbed as "Premium Motorsports", its misnomer of a team name (that began at the start of the 2015 season) as others have explained it for whichever reasons they think of. 24. In all honesty, Jeff Gordon deserves to be in the same "Elite" category with Richard Petty & Dale Earnhardt as much as Jimmie does (if Jimmie were to win the championship this year). Jeff Gordon scored the most points 7 times, which is also what Petty/Earnhardt did. Jimmie has only done it 3 times, but won championships 6 times (thanks to the Chase). Then we have David Pearson who won the championship 3 times but didn't really race full time as much to win more than 3, but still won over 100 (105 to be exact) times. Edwards hit the wall pretty hard, I'd say that was an understandable yellow. To NASCAR's credit, they usually DON'T throw cautions during green flag pit stop cycles until they're over and done with or they feel they're necessary immediately, because it often leads to...what we saw under the lengthy caution that followed. On the whole I'd say this was a pretty decent, clean race for Martinsville standards...if not for the 25+ lap fustercluck that was the caution for Edwards' caution, which caused nothing but "confusion and delay", as they say on Thomas the Tank Engine (did I really just quote that series in reference to NASCAR? Well, I just did...) Could've REALLY done without that... But on the whole I'm surprised at how...tame this year's Chase has been compared to the past 2 years. The most major fracas we've seen so far was Harvick being butthurt at Kurt Busch last week at Talladega, and that seems to have already sorted itself out. Here's a little history on his side: Jimmie has raced under 3 formats before this one. He won a championship in the 3rd season of the previous ones...sort of. The first format he raced under, the regular championship format, from 2002-2003, he never won a title. However, he never made it to his 3rd season in that format because the Chase was implemented. In the points-important version of the Chase from 2004-2010, Johnson won it in the 3rd season, 2006, and then every year after that. In the next version, the wild-card Chase, from 2011-2013, Johnson also won in the 3rd season, 2013. He didn't have a chance to win every year after that, because they changed the format again. Now, in the win-important Chase, it is the 3rd season. That means that Johnson has some stats in his favor to go on another run, at least for this year, and possibly the future (assuming they don't change the system). Not saying it will happen, but it's an interesting statistic for sure. 423. And besides, I think most of this stemmed from the questionable calls (banner caution, not maintaining speed), not because he won. 443. There's something to be said for that, but I have a feeling that if a driver that is generally well-liked on here, like, say, Martin Truex (you will probably agree with this) won a race because of some questionable cautions, the same people would be loving it. So in the end, a lot of it is about the driver. Sad to hear about what happened after the race, hope everyone is okay. 445. Excluding his 30th at Talladega (where the entirety of JGR was sandbagging), his worst finish all Chase is 8th. Didn't realize that at all. Kyle Busch has all of a sudden become one of the best drivers in the Chase, despite only one win. After his 2011 meltdown, he went on a huge run in 2012 (even though he wasn't in the Chase) and had 7 top 5's in the last 10 races. In 2013, he could've been in the title hunt if he hadn't crashed at Kansas, and he finished 4th in points, a then career best. In 2014, he started 5 for 5 in the top 10's in the Chase, but after the Talladega crash and other mechanical failures towards the end of the season, he only finished 10th. Then in 2015, aside from the Loudon crash, he had a great Chase and finished off the season with 5 top 5's in the last 6 races. And now in 2016, he has a top 10 in every race apart from the JGR sandbag. Surprising turnaround from someone who used to sputter all the time in the post season... 448. THAT, I can easily believe. There are so many drunk people by the time a race ends it's a wonder that half the people are even in any sort of condition to drive at all. Hell, we had a fan who was so drunk he thought it was a great idea to climb on top of the catch fence to get a better view (Richmond a couple of years back); a drunk mowing down fans by accident is-sadly-quite easy to imagine. Something like this actually happened at a dirt track in Pennsylvania years ago when I was visiting my folks up in New York. It was around the fourth of July weekend and we'd gone down to the track to see that night's typical short-track action. Two guys got into a drunken argument in the parking lot and one of them hopped in his car and ran over his girlfriend...something along the lines of that, I'm not 100% sure. What I do remember is that they stopped all track activity for over an hour while they got a medical helicopter in there to airlift her to the hospital. Don't know if she made it or not, but it was a really scary and unpleasant scenario to have to witness firsthand. So it's really nice to know there were apparently no serious injuries in this particular incident. 455. I predict that Johnson will win, with JGR and Harvick rounding out most of the top 5. Phoenix: Well, aside from the Dale Earnhardt, Jr. miracle, he's been unbeatable at this track since 2013 and I don't see that changing. Original Final 4 Predictions (made at Richmond): Harvick Kyle Busch Keselowski Hamlin My new Final 4 Predictions: Harvick Johnson Kyle Busch Kenseth Homestead: I think it's a toss up. I grew up seeing my Grandmother's brother aka my great uncle hooked up on an oxygen tank for over 4 years and that was caused by his decades of smoking. He matter of fact had to be kept on eye on 24/7 when he was alive because of his smoking illness. I saw this happening when I was in grade school and middle school and it made an impact on me. What I saw would make anyone not to start smoking. 3.) I had other relatives that smoked and developed other smoking related illnesses such as lung cancer also. 4.) I also had relatives died of heart attacks young and smoking was one of the factors that caused that blood pressure including a grandma that died before I was born. 5.) I can't smoke a first place due to my asthma. 6.) Your false statement about me shows why shouldn't make any assumptions about a person. 7.) You ignored my statement about church uses wine and grape juice for communion with members deciding what to drink. Drinking wine for communion is a long tradition that Catholic, Lutheran or any other Christian church. That is not what you call a party a first place. 8.) There is no positive findings for tobacco unlike wine. Wine in a modern study can be used for unclog your arteries when drink in moderation or stuff like reducing your heart attack rate and that stuff is from this century. Think about it, all the pit road errors? Practice to see how much nascar would let them get by with. Not saying all were but he dont make those mistakes. Bad runs? Try experiments with setups. That is something Chad Knaus talks about at times is they try stuff sometimes it dont work. Knaus is a genious. When the Chase starts, how come now magically 48 team is the best week in/out. They turtled their way this season. Notice how Johnson won a couple races out of the gate and all of a sudden they drop like a rock. Please! That team successfully makes a fool out of everyone out there. They make the chase their bitch. Nobody violates the 100% rule then the 48 team. Dump the chase and make them have to deal with what they have where there are and can be no practice races for them and 48 team can be stopped. Simple as that. Its not a conspiracy. These are known tactics employed by Knaus and co. I respect their methods but enough is enough. Knaus has proved for years they know how to manipulate this system, thats why its flawed. The 48bteam is the Muhammed Ali of NASCAR, they let everyone run their emotions and energy dry during the season while saving up their energy for 10 races, then go ham and toast everyone. I just wish NASCAR didnt turn such a blind eye to it. But they cant prove it either. 491. chevyfan98 posted: 10.31.2016 - 1:26 pm Rate this comment: (4) (2) "The only people who have ever liked him have serious character issues." But no, all that matters is that stupid Chase and with today's rules, all you need to do is just win early and then don't care. This year is probably the most obvious evidence how the 48 team just don't give a damn until Chase starts. No surprise 28 of his 79 wins are from Chase races either. And I don't think their strategy to fool everybody works anymore - everyone already knows they really like to play this game. Even Kyle Busch said it openly. And that's why Jimmie Johnson will always be just a Jeff Gordon's shadow despite having more titles. Huh? This is about Johnson, not the alcohol discussion. I don't understand what you're getting at here... Also something else to bring up, regarding the sandbagging thing this year. How much of Johnson's slump was sandbagging and how much of it was pure bad luck? Because I remember he had a stretch of races during the summer where he absolutely could not catch a break. Not saying he didn't sandbag this year, he definitely did, probably more than he ever has, but I think the luck factor made it seem worse than it really was. In fact, let me expand on hat, ALL the Hendrick cars (besides Kahne, who had pretty much the same year he had in 2014 and 2015) had awful luck during that summer stretch, which I think made Hendrick's struggles seem much worse than they actually were. 496. Here are two key arguments 1.) You are basically ignoring the fact the Xfinity series has a chase and having cup drivers winning Xfinity chase races actually hurts the credibility of the chase along with stuff like Kyle Larson did to Erik Jones at Charlotte. The fact is one of the rules of the cup races is if a Xfinity driver in the chase wins a race in that round, they automatically make it to the next round just like a cup driver does in the cup series. The Kyle Larson incident was one that Kyle Larson was racing reckless against Erik Jones and got to into him. Erik Jones was lucky that he got a decent finish after that. What Kyle Larson did was basically hurting a Xfinity series chases driver's hope of going into the next round. I think NASCAR is realizing the problems and is why they did the chase rule although I don't think they went far enough. What I mentioned Kyle Larson is why NASCAR needs to get a rid of the Xfinity Chase or kick out all cup drivers from doing Xfinity series races. 2.) You are ignoring NASCAR's tv marketing that has NASCAR claiming the Xfinity series is where names are being made. When you have a bunch xfinity races are being won by cup guys, NASCAR marketing and management looks at it as failure. 519. chevyfan98 posted: 11.03.2016 - 6:32 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Sounds to me like Kyle is being Cryle again. 520. ARCA I'd run only if I could find rides for the non-conflicting mile and a half and plate tracks. Sean posted: 11.04.2016 - 2:56 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) "Interesting list there Sean. Thanks. Do you consider the Champ Cars and the IROC cars (even though they are extinct now) as well?" Well, CART clearly had the superior talent during the split and an incredibly deep field from 1996-2001. Even after losing Penske and a few minor teams in 2002, it was still a very top-heavy field. After losing Ganassi and (Andretti-)Green as well in 2003, it became a messy revolving door of drivers half of which were good but half of which were pretty bad ride-buyers, with even good drivers like Ryan Hunter-Reay cycled out before their time due to lack of funding. Still, even though they lost the lion's share of their veteran talent, Bourdais, Hunter-Reay, Allmendinger, Wilson, Timo Glock (very underrated...crushed RHR as his rookie teammate and then went on to a GP2 championship and two top ten points finishes in Formula One), Power, Robert Doornbos (but what a sad story that is), Rahal, and Pagenaud came in from 2003-2007. In the same period in the IRL, the only new major talents to emerge (who wasn't already a CART alumnus) were Wheldon and (arguably) Buddy Rice (though still probably worse than any of the incoming Champ Car drivers), who was still a graduate of CART's feeder series anyway. Recent history is definitely favoring the CCWS drivers, with the group of Pagenaud, Power, Bourdais, Rahal, and Hunter-Reay showing more than the group of Dixon, Kanaan, Castroneves, and Carpenter lately... I would say objectively that CCWS and IRL basically each had half the talent though from 2003-2007. IRL had a fairly unchanging consistent core because it had more strong teams, but CCWS probably cycled through more talented drivers, although it also had more atrocious ride-buyers. Times change, and by the end of the split, both of them barely count as major. IRL from 1996-2001 definitely does not. I would call that era's IRL as more or less Indy Lights caliber (and probably inferior to like the 1997 Indy Lights season which had Kanaan, Castroneves, AND da Matta...) IRL 2002 is...borderline. I don't think de Ferran, Castroneves, and Hornish are enough, but at least with Penske switching sides you can argue it. Things do change though. IRL 1996-2002 was one of the worst periods, and possibly the worst period in IndyCar history. IRL 2003-2007 and CCWS 2003-2007 were both weak since the talent was split. Certain series are more powerful at some times than others. Some series that were once big deals totally fell apart. Trans-Am is an excellent example, which was a very important series from the late '60s to the mid-'90s, but after that has become a joke and not something I would list as a major league anymore. It's having a slight resurgence, but Pirelli World Challenge has taken over its position. IROC definitely did have some exciting races but as for the quality of the field, it always seemed like less than the sum of its parts to me. While you can at least argue that just about every IROC field from the beginning of the series until 1993 consisted solely of drivers who could be considered legendary in at least one discipline, with rare exceptions, there were still problems. While they slowly and imperceptibly started adding more and more NASCAR drivers until they were inviting the top five Cup drivers pretty much every season at this point, while many of the IndyCar stars (especially Emerson Fittipaldi, Michael Andretti, and Bobby Rahal) were usually not competing it became very unbalanced in terms of Cup, particularly when almost all races became part of Cup weekends. The choices for Cup got to be too much to the point they were inviting above-average but not great Cup drivers like Kyle Petty, Ken Schrader, and Sterling Marlin who really seem to be not exactly IROC caliber when considering they never even invited Tim Richmond or Ernie Irvan. Then it became irredeemable when they started inviting Busch champions in 1996. Now Johnny Benson somehow managed to beat Labonte, Earnhardt, Gordon, and Wallace, and Randy LaJoie somehow dominated a race at Michigan, but still, there is no argument that minor-league drivers should have been in the race in the first place (I'm okay with USAC or WoO if you consider those minor league because they are at least the top of that level, but inviting Busch/truck/ARCA champions was a JOKE.) Then they ended up handling the split by usually inviting more IRL drivers than CART drivers even in the years when CART clearly had a deeper field, and handled the Grand-Am/ALMS split by pretty much giving up on ever inviting any sports car drivers. The lack of balance and skew towards NASCAR means that even as great as some of those fields were they weren't as great as they looked. They also had an unfortunate tendency to invite people who were way out of their prime (A.J. Foyt/Richard Petty in 1989? Al Unser in 1993? Darrell Waltrip in 1997? Really?!) At least through about 1993, you could argue it was exclusively legends, but years afterward, you couldn't. It was a great concept that ended up being a waste, and I don't rate it that often except as a credential for non-stock car drivers if they happened to win there. "One more question: If you guys were to choose to begin a career in stock car racing, would you begin in ARCA or the Pro East/West series? If so, why?" William Byron seems to be making the perfect path. Hickory Speedway -> K&N East -> Trucks -> Xfinity -> Cup ARCA has always had an interesting set of tracks, but it's always been kind of a dead end too, and is not really somewhere you want to be racing in full-time. Racing part-time on the Cup superspeedways in ARCA is usually valuable but racing full-time there has largely been a dead end. The only major future Cup superstars who even drove there FULL-TIME were Benny Parsons and Davey Allison, and Allison's path probably has nothing to do with his Cup success anyway as he likely would have made it in Cup regardless due to his father's fame. Who's in 3rd place when it comes to Cup success? Jeremy Mayfield? (Who was no standout even as shallow as ARCA was...) See what I mean? 539. I mean say if Noah was actually in championship contention, and finishing 3rd at Iowa was a positive influence on his championship hunt in the East series, but it doesn't count toward his West series and he ended up losing the championship by 1 point, I would be upset by the issue to be honest. Thanks for the info, Sean. :) 540. Tide1732 posted: 11.04.2016 - 5:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Will having only 36 car-field and 4 part-times in 2017? NASCAR doesn't actually take away those points, he just wouldn't get any points if he were to enter an XFINITY race. 546. The record goes to 2004 Sylvania 200, with the first 36 laps ran under yellow. 550. rm posted: 07.19.2018 - 11:23 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Actually, fairly certain the record belongs to the 1965 Volunteer 500 at Bristol. Numerous rain delays led to a 99 lap caution for showers at one point just before halfway. 551. The pit road reporters consisted of Marty Snider, Mike Massaro, Dave Burns and Kelli Stavast. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
