Didn't see qualifying...may I ask what the deal is with Tony Stewart
turning in a speed of NINETEEN MPH (WTF...?) in Round 2, and why Kyle
Busch didn't even turn in a time at all in that round?

Well, looks like this is going to be yet another 'fun' rain delayed
race...always nice to have one of those every once in a while! I kid, I
kid...But in all seriousness, didn't see Dillon winning the pole, that's
quite a surprise. Harvick starting third? He may have finished poorly at
Martinsville, but I have a hard time seeing him missing the final four
barring him finishing terribly the next two races or he-somehow-fails to
win Phoenix. Edwards, on the other hand...starting 9th after his 36th
place finish at Martinsville last week, pretty much NEEDS to get a win
in these next two races. Being 39 points behind, I don't think he'll be
able to make all of that up barring extremely good luck going his
way...so yeah. Pretty much has to get a win here or at Phoenix if he
wants to make it to the final round!

lol Tony Stewart turns in a 19 MPH in Round 2 to qualify for 23rd. I'm

Tony started a lap but had some kind of issue in 1 and 2 and pulled it
off the track without finishing the lap. I guess he pulled in at the
beginning of pit road and didn't make it to the start finish line until
a couple minutes later, posting a slow time in the process.

dennyfan, I'm not sure if you looked at a different forecast than I just
did or if it changed since then, but weather.com says it will rain in
the early afternoon but clear up by night time. Either way, we should
race at some point tomorrow.

2nd twice.

Others tracks he has not won at are Sonoma, Kentucky, and Pocono.

Danica was fast in practice yesterday, has a nice car on longer runs.
She should be able to close out a top 20 finish and if the car gets
better she will be able to drive it to the front.

Hate to defend Danica10Racer here but that kind of thing we should just
ignore. Its when they defend Danica by trashing obviously superior
drivers (Kahne, Newman, Bowman, insert up-and-coming female driver here)
that's when it goes too far.

Humorous moment during the rain delay: Austin Dillon said if the race's
start is delayed more than 3 hours, they cancel the race and give the

Personally, I think Montoya crashing and finishing last at the Indy 500
due to an unforced error (something Penske had NEVER done before with
any driver) is more embarrassing than the jet-dryer incident, which was
really an accident. And I think the former is a major part of the reason
why Montoya got dropped to one-off status instead of Castroneves...

Well it's good to back here, I need a pick me up after my 3x3 Special
Olympics team and me essentially lost the the state title (in our
division) on a buzzer-beater.

As for the race if it ever gets underway, I'm picking Logano though I

This rain delay gives Jennifer Jo Cobb Racing more time to mingle on
their trucks today. They are working outside the track in turns 3 and 4
on both the #1 and #10 Chevrolets. Crew Chief Steve said they were
hoping to be done before the race started so they could watch the race
themselves.

Talking about Brad's comments about concussions, he was in favor or
concussion protocols and being on the side of safety. Dale Jarrett
talked about his memory lost that might of been because of concussions
he got when racing and Kyle talked about his son.

NBC seems to be doing a great job with rain delay content this season.

Rain delays haven't been enjoyable since mid/late 2000's FOX (or if you
count it, the 2014 Daytona 500 comment page).

Fair point, but the thing I wonder is...Why does he stick around here
when his opinion is clearly extremely unpopular? I want to admire his
spirit for that, but I think that would get really disheartening if you
are the sole person in a place to have a certain opinion. Danica's page
is sponsored by a fan club website for fanboyish types like him to
discuss without fear of retribution from "the haters" (IE, people with
actual constructive criticism of her)...why wouldn't he go there? His
opinion would be MORE than welcomed there and anybody who disagreed with
him would probably be seen in the wrong because most people on there
would probably have exactly the same opinion as him. He would probably
be much happier there; I can't figure out why he continues on barring
him either trying to egg us on by bringing her up at every opportunity
or him just completely tuning out any criticism of his girl we throw at
him (the good old "LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU! LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!"
routine).

For those reading this in the future:
This race, if it runs as scheduled, took place two days before the 2016
United States Presidential election...as you'd expect there were plenty
of political ads for both of the major political candidates aired during
this race.

Reed Sorenson and his #55 Premium Motorsports Toyota picked up an
election related sponsor for this race. Republican presidential
candidate Donald Trump and his vice presidential partner Mike Pence paid
to put their campaign logos on the white, red, and blue Toyota Camry.
Perhaps that's all we need to say about that though...

Interesting to note heading into this race:

JGR has won 11 of the first 26 races during the regular season. They
have yet to win any of the 7 Chase races so far, with 3 races to ago
(including Texas).

Each of the 4 JGR drivers have been passed for the win in the previous 4
races as well (Jimmie Johnson passed Matt Kenseth at Charlotte, Kevin
Harvick passed Carl Edwards at Kansas, Joey Logano passed Kyle Busch at
Talladega and Jimmie Johnson passed Denny Hamlin at Martinsville).

Each of these resulted in Chevrolet slowly catching Toyota in
Manufacturer's Championship standing. They are only 23 points ahead
heading into this race. Martin Truex Jr is the only Toyota driver to win
in the Chase (Chicago and Dover in the first round) so far.

Actually Sorenson and Robinson aren't really being sponsored by the
Trump/Pence campaign. They were going to be unsponsored this weekend
again and opted to put that on their car this weekend instead of running
a plain black car like they have in recent weeks. Similar deal that
Austin Wayne Self had in the Truck race at Talladega a couple weeks back.

Let's assume for a moment that Danica10Racer is not merely a provocateur
(which if he is, he is doing extremely well). He is more than welcome to
post his observations on Danica's performance through the weekend. By
doing so, he is NOT making the race all about her. Substitute another
driver for Danica and we'd most likely not be bothered by it. He is also
welcome to post his opinions on Danica compared to other drivers, and
likewise we can challenge said views. However, abusive comments from any
party (and there have been plenty from him and others alike) should not
be tolerated, and just because one person makes them doesn't give
license to others to do the same.

However, if you do believe that he is merely trying to inflame you, then
don't oblige him. It's that simple.

In 2007 is what I missed, okay. Because I definitely remember that
Edwards WAS originally supposed to be Martin's replacement in the #6
after his 2005 retirement, starting in 2006, until Burton left. But
since you said 2007, not 2006, you are correct, although Edwards WAS
supposed to be Martin's replacement originally.

2014 Coke Zero 400 came close, so it was a good guess. The top 8 all
were from different teams, but the 9th and 10th place finishers were
with the same teams as the 1st and 2nd place finishers. Okay, I don't

McMurray was also supposed to get the #6 in 2006 before Kurt signed with
Penske. After that though they just had him replace Kurt.

It was definitely Kluever for 2007 though. They even did a bunch of
photo shoot promos with Kluever wearing a AAA uniform and put them out
before Roush decided he wanted Ragan. I don't think Kluever was all that
special, but I always thought canning him after announcing him was a
pretty huge slap in the face, especially considering that Ragan didn't
look much better (if at all) than Kluever in the lower series up to that
point.

remember that Skinner swept the Daytona poles in his rookie season, but

Unless you meant his father Jerry Hill, who did make a handful of Cup
appearances around that time. But it's definitely not him either.

So people, when is this race going to get started?

Saw a couple tweets that NASCAR is hoping to have the track ready for
racing in the 7-7:30 et range, about 2 hours from now. Also, I expect
the broadcast to move over to NBCSN at the top of the 6 et hour.

Thirdly, its only 5:20 and its pitch black where I live. Man, this stinks.

driver while only praising his chosen one. I really cannot stand fanboy
types; the types who only see perfection in what they love and fail to
acknowledge or even grasp that what they're fan of is flawed. I've seen
and dealt with too many of these types on the Internet, and they are
some of the worst folks you could ever encounter because of how
obnoxious they can get with their love for something.

I don't know. Maybe fanboyism is just my berserk button or something. I

Almost completely forgot about Hillin. If I had to guess aside from the
Hills, I would have guessed he might have meant Andy Hillenburg or
perhaps '90s ARCA regular Bob Hill, neither which would've been correct
(Bob Hill never made a Cup start).

I'm a bit confused by this guy's posts, though-does he really not know
driver's names, only their numbers? I mean, I KNOW what he means when he
posts the numbers, even in the fantasy game, it just seems so weird to
me that he doesn't seem to know the names. In particular him answering
the question of "Who was the original choice to be Joe Gibbs Racing's
first driver?" with "Green 18 car". Not what the question was asking...

Pretty much what I was saying, if Danica10Racer wants to be obsessed
with her and not care about any other driver then let them, but its when
we get to the ridiculous double standards and attacks on obviously
superior drivers that's where we have a problem. But I don't see
anything wrong with post #27.

Bob Hill was pretty good. He could have been made a Cup start or two. He
won a few ARCA races although he's probably only thought of now as "that
guy who flipped at Daytona" or "that dude who drove the #46 Advance Auto
Parts car before they got Frank Kimmel."

So while they wait to dry the track, NBCSN (which the race switched over
to) is airing the look back at the 2001 season. A season that in some
ways I consider one of the best seasons of NASCAR ever. Partially
because of nostalgia because it was the first season I was able to watch
most of the races (not having cable/satellite back then, I was only able
to watch races airing on the local channels), but also because it was
one of the more competitive years EVER. Multiple first-time winners, and
didn't that year set a record for the most winners in a season? It was
one of those years where it felt like ALMOST every team could show up
and at least 1-2 weeks out of the year, run extremely competitive.

But on the other hand I also consider it in a way to be one of NASCAR's
worst. No getting around the death of Dale Earnhardt in the Daytona 500
that cast a black cloud over the entire rest of the campaign that
year...I remember seeing that and even though I was never a Dale fan
while he was alive (hell, I remember NOT being happy when he finally won
the Daytona 500 back in '98! No, really...) I'll come out and
admit-nearly 9-year old me cried when I found out Dale died. Even back
then I knew how big he was for the sport and that NASCAR was never going
to be quite the same without him. Heaven knows where the sport would be
if Dale Sr. was still with us. Then again, in the long run perhaps it
was for the best. Had it not been for Dale, we might've seen safety
advances come along even later than they did, like HANS devices and
SAFER barriers. And we might've lost even more drivers over the
years...As dark as it sounds, there always tends to be at least SOME
kind of silver lining to tragedies when you look at them...

And not to mention 9/11, although not racing-related. Can never forget
that either. 2001 was a great NASCAR season OVERALL, I think, but as an
overall year it was one of the darkest ones in more recent memory...

^Probably because the races are scheduled around the times of the year
when it's most likely to rain in Texas. That is no doubt why it also
seems like Phoenix has rain problems more often than you think they
should...(there have been multiple Phoenix races over the past 20 years

The Safer Barrier was already being developed on by the time of Dale's
death. The catch is NASCAR wasn't involved in the processes before Dale
died. I am saying this a person who followed Indy Racing League, CART,
and NASCAR before 2001.

The truth is IMS was going to have the Safer Barrier installed in 2002
even if Dale didn't die due to the amount of time being spent in
development of it. I

Research and Development of the safer Barrier actually started in 1998
after the flaws of the Peds Barrier that Indycar used for IMS. It took
2002 for it being installed at IMS. Indy Racing League wanted IMS to be
as safe as possible since they owned the track. I saw the Peds Barriers
at IMS on television matter of fact .

I am sure other race tracks was going to take IMS's lead even if Dale
died due to them seeing IMS being more safer than other tracks were.

Have a good feeling about this. I feel that the later start and more
grip on the track once it rubbers up will favor Danica. Hopefully it
ends with a top 15 finish or maybe even a top 10 similar to how she ran

Yup...poor Dave Marcis. At least now with charters, his DNQ record

This is like the IndyCar race back in June.

Also, I don't think Texas has been repaved since it was built before the
1997 season? Although it was slightly reconfigured sometime later, like
1998 or '99? They altered the exits of the turns due to driver
complaints. So yes, it is an old, rough surface.

and the worst ones (which are all too frequent) are some kind of
debacle. The track seems like it was never paved right and the weeper

They do a better job of staying side-by-side during pace laps than
IndyCar drivers do, that's for sure. (Although it's probably unfair to

Texas is one of the tracks that was hurt by the move to the COT and
somehow gotten worse under the Gen 6 platform.

This is why I hate this version of the Chase. Jimmie Johnson's just
hanging around the mid-teens, apparently content to just sit there and
get to the finish. He should be fighting and clawing for every position
possible.

If he wasn't already punched in for the finale at Homestead, I'm sure
he'd be dominating out front and winning this race for the fifth year in
a row.

Kyle Busch is struggling back in 16th with an ill-handling car after
moving forward earlier in the race. Long way to go, though, so they have
plenty of time to get the #18 right and in contention for the win by the
end. But not if they stay green for a really long time, because he's not
TOO far from getting lapped.

This race is example 100,000,000 that racing is a million times better
during the day than at night. The track surface and temperature with
night racing doesn't create good racing. Texas is one of the best tracks
on the schedule too because of the age of the surface.

I think Stewart is uncompetitive because he doesn't care, not because he
forgot how to drive. When he won a race he drove like a championship
competitor for a while until the high from the win wore off. Jeff Gordon
has cited Stewart as someone who could be an all-time great if he'd just
put forth more effort behind the wheel.

Is it just me or have the vast majority of cars throughout the past
couple decades with political sponsorships...not run well? The only one

Wouldn't say he's collapsed as much as the lack of guys having DNF's
around him. Took advantage of the simpleton system where having
10th-15th finishes are rewarded more than 2 top 5's and a DNF.

I find it...odd how predictable these Penske teams are. If they're not

Mears' car is absolutely destroyed. We've been seeing this happen for
years now when these cars spin and hit the grass at the right angle for
the splitter to act as a shovel. And still NASCAR won't get rid of them...

I honestly don't understand why the cars are so close to the ground.
Look at rje Camry, fusion, ss real cars and they aren't like that. If
they really want these cars to resemble those cars lift the front end of
the ground to those specific heights.

Looks like all of the past Cup races at Texas have finished at least 500
miles. So never a rain shortened race at Texas in the Cup series.

With Johnson winning one is guaranteed to fail to advance. I HIGHLY
doubt three will get eliminated next week, though-UNLESS they all crash

its looking it may take a while. So I'm not sure.

If it is over, congrats to Carl. I have to say of all the drivers left
he is not someone I'd have thought of who could pull off a clutch
"must-win" win like this, and I'd pretty much written off his
championship hopes after Martinsville. But I don't have anything against
him and he was my originally my pick to win the championship this year,
so good luck to him.

I wasn't terribly enthralled with this one. I'm glad that Edwards won,
though. Not only do I find him more likeable than most drivers, he
hasn't won in a while. And he was one of my championship four picks at
the beginning of the Chase.

No, I had a hunch this was getting called anyways with how late it was,
how much rain this cell drenched the track with, and how many more
pop-up cells were coming. I'm just...surprised they only waited three
minutes to call the race! Usually they tend to wait at least 20 minutes
or half-an-hour, I swear, I've never seen a race get called so fast!

Well, now we know Edwards and Johnson are going to Homestead (Carl
promises to save his backflip for Homestead if he wins-probably because
it was too wet to do a safe one tonight). And egads, look at those Chase
points. Logano, Kenseth, Hamlin, and Kyle Busch all just a couple points
apart around that bubble line. It's gonna be REALLY intense at
Phoenix...and considering Harvick is going to be the favorite to win
there again, there very well could be only 1 spot up for grabs on
points. Yee-ikes.

Not even close to the same situation though....... At Pocono they were
just waiting for the fog to move out. Tonight they lost the track, a
track that took them 5 hours to dry earlier in the day. NASCAR wasn't
gonna wait until 3 or 4 am to get the race back going.

Edwards and Truex are the only two toyota drivers I root for so I have

Congrats to Carl. He won the first ever race I went to, never been a big
fan of his but he is my favorite of the 4 Gibbs drivers. I was hoping
Harvick could win next week, maybe not after what he did to Austin. Not
sure why he did that. As for the backflip thing, Carl actually did a
backflip after he won a rain-shortened race in the spring of either 2013
or 14 at Bristol. He almost slipped when he landed, so he learned his
lesson. I hope that Logano & 1 of the SHR cars makes it so that all 3
manufacturers will be represented at Homestead and no team will have

Probably the most important win of Carl's career when you really think
about it. He's definitely dipped in performance from the beginning of
the season (mainly since the early Spring when it seemed like he was THE
man to beat this year), but at the same time he's definitely hung around
enough and has competed for enough wins all year long to where I don't
think him making the Final Four is a farce or something. And obviously
he'd be a worthy champion career wise as well. I don't have any problems
with it. Hell, there's a very good chance he'll be the only guy in the
Final Four that I actually LIKE without very many reservations.

I think two of Harvick, Logano, and Kyle Busch will get the last spots.
Right now I'm thinking Harvick and Kyle because Harvick is the obvious
favorite to win Phoenix (unless Dillon takes him out, but that all seems
like typical RCR empty threats), and I imagine Kyle will probably run a
little better than Logano at Phoenix.

Phoenix predictions:

Harvick wins... he's unbeatable there unless we get an ending like last
years fall race. Will be interesting to see what happens between him and
Dillon. I don't think Austin will do anything, but I'll be honest and
say I won't be able to feel terribly sorry for Harvick if he does. But
like I said, I don't expect anything to happen and I think Harvick wins
going away.

As for the last chase spot, I think it probably goes to Kyle Busch. He
really saved himself tonight by coming back to finish fifth after
running 15th most of the race, and I think he'll have another run at
Phoenix just good enough to finish where he needs to.

Yeah, that's why I said Phoenix is gonna be a nail-biter for a lot of
guys. 4 guys going for 2, possibly only 1 spot if somebody further back
(Harvick, of course, I doubt Kurt will win), and with only a couple of
points separating all of them. A position or two could be all it makes
to be the difference between going for a championship at Homestead and
getting eliminated. Somebody could miss out by ONLY one point, or even
by tying but having a lower best finish in this round (like Austin
Dillon in Round 2). Could be in for something really crazy next weekend...

Anyways, I went to this one, but since it's a school night I had to
leave after halfway.

First of all, the rain delay cleanup was a farce. Or it at least felt
like one. In the Spring race, it rained but it only took 2-3 hours to
clean up. But here it rain for 30 minutes and it takes 6 hours? Really?
Obviously NASCAR's not in control of the weather, but waiting that long
was agonizing and I felt like it could've been much faster.

Anyways, from what I saw, Logano led every single lap minus the start,
so I thought that he going to run away with it when I left. So I was
quite surprised to see Edwards end up winning. Good win for him too,
let's see how he does in Homestead.

Anyways, even when the race started, the mood was pretty much killed for
me because I was waiting 9 hours for the thing to even start. But it
happens, and I'll be looking forward to the next one to go to in April.

Maverick, it's the track. There are so many weepers, I went to the
spring race in '14 and got there at 8 am. No rain after I got to the
track at all, but they spent the whole day cleaning the track and they
postponed it around 6. Again, no rain for 10 hours and they couldn't dry
the track. The older track surfaces are more prone to do that, like
California (if it ever rained there) or Atlanta.

Oh, that's a shame. I was at the 2013 Richmond fall race but had to
leave early because a friend we were there with got really sick. And you
know what happened at the end of THAT race that I ended up missing.

So I'll say Johnson wins next week, but he's already in. Harvick will
finish top-5, but it won't be enough to make it. Hamlin, Carl, Kyle &
Kurt will all finish in the top 10 as well. That will put Hamlin & Kyle
through to the championship 4 on points, while Carl is already in and
Kurt is so far back that he, for all intents and purposes, must win next
week. Logano & Kenseth will finish outside the top 10, as Phoenix isn't
a historically good track for either one of them. Logano will drop from
the Chase, and Kenseth won't be able to point his way in. Remember, Matt
essentially lost the title there in 2013, though he probably would've
lost anyway.

I actually do not think that Harvick will win at Phoenix simply because
of the way that SHR has run in recent weeks. They've run so bad as of
late that it makes me think that Hendrick has kept some information from
them on their technical alliance as either revenge for moving to Ford or
because Johnson has a legit shot to win his seventh title this year.

Personally, I think that Kurt and Harvick are out. My predictions for
the third and fourth spots are Kyle Busch and Joey Logano. Hamlin just
doesn't do well in crunch-time situations and I feel that Logano will
edge Kenseth on finishing position.

SHR's average finish in the Chase has been 17.6, that is a good point
Kevin. Johnson has been much stronger in the Chase than Harvick. Kevin's
average finish is 16.3, and 21.3 in races he didn't win. Johnson's is
8.4, and 10.8 in races he didn't win. And Johnson has historically been
better at Phoenix than Texas, plus he may have won had the race gone
green tonight when they pitted towards the end.

Looks like Carl Edwards scored his first win shortened race in the Cup
series.

With two races to go, Toyota is now stretched to a 30 point lead AGAIN
over Chevrolet. A Toyota driver finishing in the top 10 in both the
finale races would all guarantee a championship clinch for Toyota's
first Manufacturer championship in the Cup series.

I will be rooting for Carl Edwards over the rest. He surely deserves one
to redeem himself from 2011's championship battle.

If they end this race, Jimmie Johnson pitting shoved him from 6th to
11th under this caution for rain... This will ruin his chance to finish
in the top 10 50% of the races...he could potentially win the
championship at Homestead with only 17 top 10's in 36 races..

I will be so stoked if Carl and the 19 team can pull it off at
Homestead. Praying for the race to end. I so badly want Carl to win one.

YES! So excited Carl won, after missing so many opportunities throughout
the season, this win pretty much makes up for all of those. Kinda ironic
how Carl's pit crew cost him in the spring Texas race, but they clutched
up when it counted.

Anyways, this is Carl's first rain shortened win. His Bristol 2014 win
was rain affected, but I like to call that a "rain extended" win.

First time since 2008 Carl wins more than two races in a season. I was
beginning to think he had some sort of a Ricky Rudd curse, in that he
could find his way to victory lane, but never more than twice a season.

This is Carl's first chase win since 2010, and just Dave Rogers' second
chase win as crew chief.

As mentioned earlier, with Sports Clips on the car tonight, Stanley is
the only current paint scheme of his he hasn't won with, although that's
not to say they haven't been close (Bristol (Summer '15), Phoenix
(Spring), Texas (Spring), Dover (Spring) and Sonoma). Stanley will be on
the 19 next week at Phoenix for the final time this season.

That incident between Kevin Harvick and Austin Dillon looked like the
one similar to 2006 when Harvick did the exact same thing off turn four
and got Scott Riggs loose and wrecked. That's Deja Vu!

Correction, Toyota has a 29 point lead in Manufacturer's Standing, not 30.

Also, with the wins from Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards aside, we
literally have a 3 way tie for the points lead between Joey Logano, Kyle
Busch and Jimmie Johnson with 4074 points apiece, while Matt Kenseth is
one point and Denny Hamlin is 2 points behind, after 2 races into this
round.

I was busy the last few days with school stuff, so I couldn't comment or
give my minute-by-minute weather updates.

The rain delay was an absolute FARCE. It rains for, what? 30 minutes?
Shouldn't take so long to dry off, shouldn't it? Instead, it takes SIX
HOURS! The track was close to dry by like 4:30, and yet it took 3 more
hours to get it dry. And once the engines finally started, it took

is even worse.

Marvin Burke and Mark Donohue are the only drivers I can think of right
off who won in their last 3 races (Burke in his only race) and I'm sure
Edwards won the closest to the end of his career since Donohue.

Even Jackie Stewart, Alain Prost, and Nico Rosberg did not win that late
in the season when they won F1 titles and subsequently retired at the
end of their championship seasons, despite how much less competition
there usually is in F1.

I guess Gil de Ferran winning his last IndyCar race and never racing
again is something historic...at least for the current full-time era.
