FOX's scoring ticker actually malfunctioned towards the end of Junior's run in the second round of qualifying and they weren't able to initially show either Junior's or Elliott's times. Had me (and no doubt a few others) a bit confused at first... The debut appearance for a few brand new teams, including TriStar Motorsports' newly reformed Cup team, with Cole Whitt behind the wheel, and, with Gaughan being the fastest non-charter team in qualifying, the official Cup debut of the Beard Motorsports team. Gaughan will make his 2nd Daytona 500 start 13 years after his first. I want to say that's a record between Daytona 500 starts...but it's probably not. Perhaps somebody who's kept up with stats like that better than I have can help? Gaughan and Sadler have both qualified their way in; Sorenson and Kennington can potentially fall back on their times. LaJoie and Hill's only hope is to race their way in through the duels. 11. Hmm, looks like he was supposed to win the Pole, but Elliott made sure it's him who won the Pole again. The streak of rigged Poles may be over, but there's something really fishy Jr. lost the Pole by that very small margin... 15. Anonymous posted: 02.20.2017 - 7:14 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I for one have absolutely no problem with the new damage rules. If you can't fix your car in the pits in five minutes, you obviously won't be winning the race and you're just out there riding around for points hoping other people crash out. This change along with the new points system make it all about actually being competitive throughout the entire race instead of just points racing. Besides, how many times have we seen a wrecked car riding around 50 laps down cause a caution by having some body panel patch fly off? Not to mention the risk of a panel flying off into the stands... 16. Anonymous posted: 02.20.2017 - 8:44 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Thinking the pole was rigged was fun but actually pretty easy to explain away each year. Would it really have been that surprising any other year if Junior won the Daytona pole? And I agree with all the points #15 made. If you're working on the car for more than 5 minutes you're losing multiple laps, and at just about any track under a mile and a half it's closer to double digit laps even with a long caution. If a car is that damaged they're turning into a rolling chicane on the track. It's supposed to prevent stuff like Brad K tearing the nose off at Kansas and going back out there for some reason, only to blow his engine and cause an unnecessary caution within a lap. Or Kasey Kahne at Talladega, not even being back up to speed in a damaged car and going head on into the outside wall. I think in the long run this rule helps more than it hurts, especially when it comes to small teams. Not having to bring all that extra metal to the track saves a ton of money, and might even help new teams enter the sport in coming years for all we know. 17. Used to, teams would just shear stuff off, maybe throw some duct tape on there, and get back out there. Now, all the mega teams have these prefab panels that they just throw on there, and more often than not that causes more problems than solutions. NASCAR could have simply said that no new body parts could be attached during a repair, but the five minute rule essentially takes care of it. 18. chevyfan98 posted: 02.20.2017 - 11:00 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "LOL, Junior lost the Pole just by 0,002 seconds. I think the clock is only for drivers who have damaged their car in an incident and have to go behind the wall or to the garage, and not for those who have a mechanical issue and go behind the wall or to the garage, which makes sense. Something like that reads as a conscious effort to minimize debris on track, which in turn would reduce cautions for that cause. That would be a good thing since it's been such a point of controversy over the past 10 years or so. 30. chevyfan98 posted: 02.20.2017 - 2:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Going to go out on a limb (sarcasm) and predict LaJoie and Hill DNQ. Great move." In my opinion, he had sold out years ago when he originally sold the site to them. It was already way less interesting than it was in its heyday from 1999-2002ish. The best thing about the site by far in my opinion was his links to other sites' columns and his links to 1000+ amateur sites. He gave a LOT of once-underground sites their first attention (That's Racin, Frontstretch, Catchfence, etc..., not that any of those sites were particularly amateur) and introduced fans to all sorts of new writers and all sort of new sites, all of which would link back to him, which is also the reason why he got so big. It wasn't because of the rumors so much but because he became THE hub that all the rest of the sites he helped popularize were linked to. While he did keep up with his article links to the very end, he generally only linked from established sources by that point, so the odds that he would pick up some new hot commentary site no matter how good the commentary was were greatly reduced. As one of the amateurs whose teenage site he linked, I was especially bitter when he dropped his page of racing links. I didn't have a site at the time, but it seemed to me that he built his back on many other fans' independent sites and link exchanges with them and then ignored them once he became part of the establishment himself, and that felt distasteful to me. More recently, I spent so much more work on my recent sites than my childhood ones, yet when I asked if he'd link my much more impressive sites, he refused. I never totally stopped going to the site but it was nowhere near as cool. In the past, he seriously found new voices, like Matt McLaughlin, who was my favorite columnist of the '90s, but more recently, he hasn't done that too much (I acknowledge that he was probably too busy to do as much work on some of these pages as he once did.) As these were my favorite parts of the site, I don't feel much of a loss there. So no chevyfan98, I don't blame you for going through the archives. It was a lot more interesting then, especially because back then insiders would flat out give him rumors, which is something that largely stopped around the time he sold out to ESPN (by that period he was generally only including rumors from other people's articles, which people could generally find by themselves on Twitter or whatever.) It WAS a great site in its early years, but the last decade or so, has been merely adequate. I know I spent way less time on there recently than in the past, so I don't feel much of a loss at this point. Nowhere near as bad as what happened to Jump the Shark though. Seibaru, I've spent a great deal of time on Wayback myself (obviously, to do the kind of obsessive historical analyses that I do) but I wouldn't put it past ESPN to put the noindex/nofollow code in their HTML to prevent the pages from bebing crawled in the future. A lot of sites have been lost that way. "The Social Network" was wrong when fake Mark Zuckerberg said that "the Internet isn't written in pencil, but in ink" or whatever. So many sites I remember from my youth have already been lost, including some of my own. 56. Congrats to DJ, that team worked so hard and he overcame a late charge by Elliott. This is the first time a driver has won the pole & their duel since Dale Earnhardt in 1996. If Chase Elliott wins the Daytona 500, he'll be the first driver to win the pole, duel & the big race since his dad in '85, I believe. If Denny Hamlin wins the Daytona 500, he'll be the first back-to-back winner since Sterling Marlin from 1994-95. What I learned tonight: Penske, Hendrick, Gibbs, Ganassi cars are all strong. They'll lead the way on Sunday. SHR cars are strong too, except the 41. I think 2, 22, 14, 1, 42, 5, 24, 88, 11, 18 & 20 have the best shot. May have left someone out. Roush-powered cars were surprisingly strong (6, 17, 43, 34, 38) while Childress power was surprisingly weak (3, 27, 31, 47, 37, 13). 72. Dale and Brad both looked very good and showed they have pretty good cars when they were out front. Meanwhile Denny showed that he might just have the best car in the field after he had to work his way from the back of the pack after a penalty in the pits. Chase also looked pretty good but his lack of experience compared to the other three drivers makes me hesitant to put him as high up as them. That being said if he were to win on Sunday it wouldn't shock me at all. Also keep an eye on McMurray. I can't recall him being that aggressive in the past during a plate race and he pretty much said after his duel he raced like he did because he thinks his car is that good. I have a feeling as long as he can keep his car clean he's gonna be in the mix near the end comes Sunday. 73. As for people debating the importance of the Duels as it relates to the 500, going back to 2012, 31 of the last 50 top 10 finishers in the Daytona 500 also finished top 10 in their Duels race, including 15 of 20 the last two years. 75. The six Gibbs Toyotas were 1-6 in both the fast lap leaderboard and in the 10-lap average leaderboard, and no one else was even remotely close. The slowest fast lap of the six was 2 mph faster than any other car's fast lap, and the slowest 10-lap average of the six was 2.5 mph faster than any other car's average. I'm starting to think the new Toyota body might, just might, have an aerodynamic advantage. Hope Sunday isn't a Toyota snorefest. 76. 2 & 88 Fan posted: 02.24.2017 - 4:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @Incognito The Gibbs cars were all drafting together while nearly everyone else was doing single car runs so of course they're gonna be faster. Joey Logano win the Advance Auto Parts Clash when Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski took each other out on the last lap. Chase Elliott and Denny Hamlin won the Duels. The first duel saw Reed Sorenson and Corey LaJoie trying to race in. The two made contact and Sorenson crashed out hard, leading to LaJoie making it in the field. The second duel saw Elliott Sadler (doing a one-off for TBR before the team leaves Cup) in on time but running well with a chance of racing in anyway (and saving Sorenson's effort) against D.J. In 2009, Junior crashed in front of the leaders who had just pitted, taking the dominant driver Kyle Busch out. This year, Kyle Busch crashed in front of the leaders, taking Junior out. Elliott Sadler was leading at the time of the 2009 crash, and is leading after the 2017 crash. In 2012, Dave Blaney's Tommy Baldwin Racing car led during an unexpected red flag. This year, Elliott Sadler's TBR car led during an unexpected red flag. The driver who won both races was taken out in this crash. From 1976-'89, no fewer than four of Daytona's all-time greats, David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Buddy Baker, and Darrell Waltrip all had to wait at least 15 attempts before finally winning the Daytona 500. Pearson's Daytona 500 win in 1976 came in his 15th attempt, as did Bobby Allison's first Daytona 500 win in 1978. Two years after Allison's first Daytona 500 win, Buddy Baker won in record-smashing fashion in his 18th attempt, which itself stood as a record for many years. That started the 1980s at the Daytona 500 and the decade ended much the same way, as Darrell Waltrip won his only Daytona 500 in his 17th try. And of course, the wait Dale Earnhardt had, and the ways he lost the Daytona 500 before finally winning it in his 20th attempt in 1998, will never be forgotten. Tonight, that old tale of drivers having to wait their turn returned, as Kurt Busch joined that list of legendary drivers, all but Baker also having won at least one championship in their careers, as another one of NASCAR's greats that had to wait an eternity to finally win the Daytona 500. An interesting note to that is that, of the previous five drivers that had to wait at least 15 tries to win the Daytona 500, only Allison won it more than once, and neither Pearson or Waltrip ever seriously threatened to win the Daytona 500 again after their lone 500 win. Another interesting note about how this race finished was that, for the first time since 1976, both the Wood Brothers' #21 and the famous Petty #43 finished in the top five in the same Daytona 500. In fact, as much success as Petty and the Wood Brothers have had at Daytona, as far as I know, those two races and the 1971 race are the only three times the #21 and #43 have finished in the top five in the same Daytona 500, which is almost impossible to believe. Also, there are other ironies in Busch's win in this Daytona 500. This race came on the Golden Anniversary of Mario Andretti's Daytona 500 win in 1967, and in 2014, Busch drove in the Indianapolis 500 for Mario's son Michael, and finished sixth, taking top rookie honors, something both Mario and Michael had accomplished previously. Other drivers tied to NASCAR who won that distinction include Donnie Allison (1970), Tim Richmond (1980), and Tony Stewart (1996). Also, it can't escape anyone that Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart got to a long-awaited Daytona 500 win together. Ten years ago, they dominated the 2007 Daytona 500, leading 130 of that race's first 152 laps before both crashed together in turn four when Tony hit the apron and Kurt was too close to avoid him, and both crashed. One year later, Kurt had a role in depriving Stewart of victory when he pushed then-teammate Ryan Newman past Stewart and on to a 1-2 Penske finish. Given all that, of course Kurt would bring them both to victory lane in the Daytona for the very first time. Kurt's win also reminds me somewhat of another ex-Penske driver finally shaking off a bridesmaid reputation to win his particular type of racing's biggest event. That driver would be Tom Sneva, who finished second at the Indianapolis 500 three times in four years (1977-'78, '80), with the third of those coming from the last starting position before finally winning the race in 1983, beating Pesnke's drivers to do so. Tonight, Busch somewhat did likewise. Like Sneva at Indy, Busch finished second at the Daytona 500 three times in six years (2003, '05, '08), and like Sneva at Indy in '80, Busch's third runner-up came from a last place starting position. And although it took him a bit longer, Busch finally won his form of racing's biggest event, the Daytona 500, after finishing second three times and scoring a series championship, which Sneva did twice. (Interestingly, Sneva crossed over and drove in the Daytona 500 three times and finished seventh in 1983, the year of his Indy victory.) 434. For the drivers who completed the full race, that's 133. Kyle Larson (174), Ryan Blaney (166), Chase Elliott (164), Joey Logano (156), Michael McDowell (139), and Kurt Busch (133) are the only drivers who managed to do that. Other than those five drivers, the other fifteen top-20 finishers have a career win total of either 0 or 1, except for Waltrip and Sadler, who have 3-4 wins but haven't won in more than 10 years. So, it's a great day for Kurt, and I'm happy for him even though he's not among my favorite drivers, but I sure wish one of those other guys could have scored either his first or second career win today! When you think about it, all the big sporting events that have a history have some kind of back story, especially this particular Daytona 500, because there were so many things in this race that reminded people of the sport's past. For instance, if I didn't know better, at about the three-quarter mark, it looked like a Parsons-Petty battle up front with the #43 and #72 cars battling up front, and Cole Whitt certainly did Benny proud in that #72 car, methodically working his way through the carnage of the crashes and working his way up front, just as Benny often did when he drove the #72 car in the 70s (and got about as much notice as Benny got in his day). If not for a late pit stop, Cole Whitt might have finished in the top ten. One thing about the Daytona 500 (and the other plate races, as well), there are surprises, and this race had them in spades. Michael McDowell ran in the top 5-7 quite a bit, and others, including Elliott Sadler, who led just past the halfway mark, Matt DiBenedetto, Brendan Gaughan, and Michael Waltrip, in his final Cup start, all had their moments, with Waltrip, DiBenedetto, and Gaughan all finishing in the top 11. One thing that had a profound impact on the first two stages of this race, and it's perhaps why the first 300 miles didn't have as much in the way of crashes, is the way teams tried to strategize their way with odd and bizarre pit strategies, that for the most part, didn't work. In fact, those pit strategies backfired on the Toyota teams, as they never did recover from the problems they encountered as a result of those crazy tactics. Frankly, while I'm indifferent about whether points should be awarded to the drivers that are in the top ten at the points where the stages end, I'm totally against the idea of throwing caution flags because of how that affects overall race strategy, and we saw that in this race today. Not only that, but drivers know that at the end of a stage that, if they happen to be laps behind the leader, they can make up a lap at the end of a stage, just because of the caution flag procedure. I also don't like the idea of telling everyone when a caution flag is going to be thrown, because of how that affects strategy. If they're going to award points at a certain point, that's fine, but throwing a caution flag disrupts the flow of the race and affects the competition needlessly. For example, for this race, the first two stages ended at laps 60 and 120. why not keep the race green at that point, go back to the standings at the end of those two laps, and award points thusly without interrupting the flow of the race. 448. JG24ChasElliottFan posted: 02.26.2017 - 9:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Great win for Kurt Busch. After coming close so many times at Daytona, and restrictor plate tracks, in general, it's about time he won one; not to mention the Daytona 500! Interesting to see six Fords and just a single Toyota in the top ten. This looks like it might be a good year for Ford. On a related note, that was a nice job by Trevor Bayne to come back from a near-racing ending wreck (also good job to Brendan Gaughan in 11th!). ' The guys behind them, in 12th-15th, looked like they were well on their way to good finishes, but ran out of fuel. It's too bad since three of those four led with under six to go and the other was about to solidify a really good day overall. Gonna miss seeing Michael Waltrip out there but he had a good finish today to wrap up a solid Daytona 500 career. 8th's pretty good and he had DiBurrito behind him who had a good finish too. Really good race outside of the stretch of calamity after the second stage. There was a lot of good racing and there was an interesting mix of underdogs, young guns, and veterans up front all day. 449. Here he was patient and let things play out and it paid off big time. * The win was special for Tony Gibson as he is from Daytona Beach and his mother ran the ticket office for many years. Tony is one of Alan Kulwicki's original team members who all went on to have individual success as crew chiefs. * There were only about 16 cars on the lead lap, but only 26 were running at the finish. * The body shop will be working overtime this weekend, there is a lot of damaged sheet metal to fix, especially for the heavy hitters who have to get things figured out. * Michael Waltrip finishes 8th in his final race, it was a war of attrition today and he just snuck up in there to get a nice top ten run and his last top ten finish of his career. * I don't think the segments should even count as cautions, just as stoppages. Like not every break in a football game is a timeout and isn't counted as such. * Also first win for Stewart-Haas as a Ford team and Tony Stewart's first win as a sitting car owner and his first Daytona 500 win as a car owner which he never got as a driver. So Tony can at least claim the owner's trophy along with Gene Haas. * Kyle Busch did not fare all that well after his segment win, he pretty much trashed Goodyear after his tire blew causing a crash that took out some of the stronger Toyota cars. * This was the first race for the new repair policy. * Credit to Sean and Racermetrics when say this, I believe this win is incidental since Kurt Busch passed Larson when he ran out of fuel and Busch was the beneficiary passer. 466. FS1/FS2 is crumbling, and the only things that are saving those channels are the UFC/NASCAR, and MLB on Saturday. NBCSN has all the 3 major racing series in America, F1/Indycar and NASCAR. They only have the Wednesday NHL games and I can't think of another NBCSN broadcast. Their big piece is Sunday Night Football, which is on NBC. NBCSN losing NASCAR would have less of an impact on them than for FOX. 493. I understand that NASCAR doesn't count them as official wins because the races don't meet a certain amount of miles in it, but I think that is a silly rule. I think they should count. As far as the playoffs go I would still make them non points races (well I guess the Duel now is for points.) You don't get points or playoff points for the race but the win would get you into the playoffs, if I was in charge. 522.
