If all 25 of the drivers who were faster than Danica had been slower

I'm amazed by the fact that two weeks in a row Bowyer struggles in Round
1 (21st at Vegas and 24th at Phoenix), yet finds speed in Round 2 to
qualify 13th both times while Kevin Harick goes from being 13th at
Vegas/9th at Phoenix in Round 1, yet falls apart in Round 2 by
qualifying 19th at Vegas and 23rd at Phoenix, ultimately qualifying
behind Bowyer at both tracks.

There's the ole' RR exaggeration out in full force. You both are
focusing way too much on positioning and not enough on how narrow the
margin was between 24th and Danica.

I wouldn't say that .04 behind 24th is slow at all to be honest. You
could have had a better lap until you got loose for a hundred feet and
lost that time.

Noted. :)

Phoenix has always been a good track for the #88 lately no matter who is
driving it, Junior had a rocketship last spring and how could we forget
about Bowman leading nearly 200 laps. Also the site of Junior's most
recent win, even though he didn't really earn that one admittedly.
Hopefully this'll be the race that gets his season turned around.

Derrike Cope almost won here at Phoenix in 1995, finishing runner-up
after Ricky Rudd passed him late, but he's the only one of the 44
drivers who were in the race that day that is still active in Cup
competition. Joe Nemechek and Morgan Shepherd are still active in
NASCAR's Big 3 series while Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace are still
running lower levels. Who knows if Bobby Labonte will be back in a seat
anytime soon.

@9 - I'd say they both get a top-10 this weekend.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jr picks up his first top-10 of the year this
weekend, either. He did qualify third, and Bowman ran that amazing race
in the 88 at Phoenix in November.

How much lower can she go?

Okay...the team let her go last of the 4 teams so she could get the
cooler track and listen to her teammates describe what the track is
like, yet, 26th is all she could do.

I mean...it's only a 39 car field for crying out loud...and she is 26th.
By far the weakest link in the SHR chain.

Junior is not running the same car Bowman drove, he's got the backup
from that weekend, looks fast!

Also, Harvick, the master here, starts in 20th. Shocking.

And finally, how bout Ryan Blaney, what an amazing start to the season,
gets his first career front row start, and this is the highest the 21
team has been in points since 1992!

Denny Hamlin will start from the rear of the field, as one of his tires
were punctured during his q run, and they have to change tires as a
precaution.

I believe Hamlin can keep his starting spot. Elliott Sadler had a tire
go down in qualifying at Atlanta and didn't go to the rear.

said they changed the rule after Atlanta, that's why Sadler wasn't put

So let me get this straight, when the #18 cheats, they're just trying to
test how far they can go without being caught and accidentally overshot
it by a "small margin." But when any other team cheats, they should be
burned at the stake. Right.

I find it more laughable that people like you think teams should be
allowed to cheat their cars up as much as they want and still be
credited with the win. That is, unless its someone who you have an
agenda against, then NASCAR should throw the book at them.

Since Labonte is working for Fox and is now HOF eligible, I don't think
we are going to see him back in a car. And Phoenix has been one of
Cope's better tracks. He's not going to be a contender, but I wouldn't
be surprised if he is able to have a top 30-35 placing.
Fun Fact. Cope is he only guy in today's field that was part of Phoenix
race #1, and he was the only guy in Atlanta to have raced on both
configurations of that track in Cup.

Why is it a big deal if Derrick cope drives for premium motorsports he
has nothing left to prove just driving into the sunset him and jay

Danica has been running front of Suarez for most of the year. That

The difference is that Suarez is a rookie who learned a month before the

If you call 6 top tens in 157 starts and only 57 laps led and a pole at

I think the contact between Stenhouse and Larson helped Newman to get
away from the field and win this race. But regardless really happy for
Ryan Newman and RCR. This is about the same way Newman won here back in
2010.

14th for Dale Jr. Not bad. The pit crew deserves some credit for good
stops and for once the driver and crew chief finished better than they
ran in the second half of the race. it's not much, but it certainly
helps in the points.

Ryan Newman wins his first race since the 2013 Brickyard 400, his first
race for RCR in the #31, and his first race at Phoenix since 2010. This
is his second win in the desert and just like the first one he steals it
getting sneaky on a green-white-checker.

Same here 123. Not a huge fan of Newman, but even before the last
caution, he was driving very impressively and saw much more of the front
than Danica ever did all day - in a worse car - but that last part isn't
much of a surprise.

So impressed with how Kyle Larson has continued to improve as a racer.
As far as I'm concerned, he is a championship contender.

This is a nice sendoff for Newman before he gets demoted to a lower
team. He won't win after this race. This is the swan song for him.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Ryan Newman in any capacity but he
shouldn't be the lead driver for any team. He would be great on an RPM
or JTG where he's the lead driver and the technical driver who sets the
cars up. He is great at that but he's not a championship level driver
and technically never has been.

The race may have been dominated by 3 drivers, 22, 24, and 18 today, but
that was a fun race. Great racing all over the track. Larson is going to
win this year very soon. I like his chances at Auto Club, as his only
win came at Michigan. Kyle Busch was well on his way to win without the
caution. But it ain't over until it's over stays true

Yes they do, #136, especially on a 95 degree day with track temperatures
in the 140 degree range. If it were a night race, as was the case the
last time Newman won at Phoenix, then I think more cars might have
stayed out, which actually would have made it easier for Newman and
Stenhouse, if he was still the first car not to pit. But Newman was
running in sixth or seventh when the caution came out for Logano's
crash, so he was also running very well.

The win, #18 in Newman's career, ties him with Neil Bonnett, Geoff
Bodine and Harry Gant on NASCAR's all-time list. I think that Newman
tends to get lost among this era's drivers, mainly because of the 30+
win drivers being more plentiful than in any era in the sport's modern
history, but considering that among Newman's wins are wins in arguably
the sport's two biggest races, the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400, and
wins at some of NASCAR's other tougher tracks, such as Texas, New
Hampshire (3 times), Dover (twice), Martinsville, Richmond, and Pocono,
added now to a second win at Phoenix, I think Newman may go down as one
of the more underappreciated drivers of this, or any era. Is he among
the best? Of course not, and he might not even be a Hall of Famer (he's
borderline to out, in my view, though the two BIG wins and his All-Star
Race win as a rookie in 2002 boost his chances there), but Newman's
going to be remembered like Bobby Isaac, Neil Bonnett, and Harry Gant
were in their respective eras. A tough competitor who asked for and gave
no quarter, and someone who's accomplishments are going to be
overlooked, but 18 wins (so far) including two HUGE wins and other wins
on very tough tracks put him in that group of drivers that were
underappreciated when they raced, except by those he raced against who
knew exactly how tough a competitor he was.

And given how bull-strong Newman is, does it come as any surprise that
he had a really good day on such a blisteringly hot afternoon. And while
he didn't win, I think the same can be said of Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.
here. He's got many of the same attributes that Newman does, including
being stocky and bull-strong, and I don't think it's an accident that he
had such a great day on such a hot day, either, and for the very same
reasons.

Another thing I believe that makes today's win special for Ryan Newman
and Richard Childress is the fact that Phoenix was the place where
Newman made his Cup Series debut in late 2000, and that race marked the
one and only time Newman ever raced in the same event with Dale
Earnhardt, Sr. To this day, Newman calls that, being on the track in the
same race as Dale, Sr., one of his career highlights, even though he
didn't fare that well on that day (he finished 41st). Believe it or not,
that makes Newman one of the very few drivers racing in the Cup Series
today that can actually say that he raced against Dale Earnhardt.

Finally: they were teammates for 1 year (2013). In that year, Newman

finished on the lead lap 27 times. Patrick, on the other hand, finished

#175, #177, one of the reasons why new tires were so important today
were the weather conditions and corresponding track conditions. If
temperatures had been about normal today, staying out might have been a
bit more practical, but with temperatures of 95 degrees with a track
temperature of 140+, many of the teams simply thought it too risky to
stay out, especially on tires that might have melted beads from scolding
hot brakes, which is the reason why that final caution was out in the
first place. 50-55 laps was about as far as many teams could run before
the bead inside the right front tire melted from brake heat, which in
turn was made worse by the weather conditions. While we know the #22 of
Joey Logano had a right front failure due to brake heat, there might
have been a number of others in danger of the exact same thing, meaning
that the pit stop was not only to get a competitive advantage with
fresher tires, but it may also a safety stop because of the number of
them riding on potential time bombs on the right front, due to excessive
brake heat melting the beads.

I for one have never understood why they always pit so late in the race.
Especially at a track like Phoenix where track position is more
important than tires. Even if the leaders do stay out and everyone pits
behind them, they still have a good chance to hold them off (like
Harvick did last year). Besides, it randomly shuffles up the finishing
order to where people like Newman can troll their way into the win
because everyone in front of him decided to give the race away by pitting.

Guys, another reason why everyone pits so late in the race has to do
with the current restart rules and the double-file restarts. Back in the
days of single-file restarts, unless it was a place like Darlington or
Rockingham (before that track left the schedule), they stayed out if
they were up front and the caution came out because everyone else was
lined up single-file behind them. But that's another place where the
double-file restarts changed the game. with the cars two abreast on the
restart, it gave the guys that changed tires a bigger edge over those
that didn't change tires, especially because they have fresher tires and
are closer to the leader than they were in the days of the single-file
restart. There have been races, even at Martinsville or Richmond, where
a driver pitted and lined up seventh or eighth on the restart, and won
the race because of the advantage fresher tires gives them, combined
with being closer to the leader than was the case before the double-file
rule was adopted in 2009.

159, I knew Ricky was a bit shorter than his teammate, but that's all I
really remembered about him in terms of body type. Btw, I never thought
about drivers like Ryan Newman or Ricky being good in the heat. However,
I can see how being strong could help in the heat. Tony Stewart has a
history of heating up his performance in summer, at least when he was in
NASCAR and he's chubby.

Oh, #2 failed post-race inspection in Cup. I don't see any opinion from
HouseOfPenske about it...
Classy, everyone knows everything as far as the driver they don't like
is concerned, but when their favorite driver is concerned, they suddenly
pretend they're not here and nothing happened...

And as for D10fan, there is a simple solution to stopping his trolling.
Just stop acknowledging it. Source: I was a troll once when I was
younger (certainly not proud of it).

And now disregarding my own advice, though most of his comments are
wrong he does have a point about Austin Dillon. What's with him this year?

Saw maybe about 5 minutes of this race, between life stuff, focusing on
the NCAA's and Jr's struggles I've not really kept up much, but I'm
saddened by the lack of activity here. I know Long Shot meant well and
put a lot of work into the new boards but I was hoping there would be at
least a FEW less full defects.

A little deja vu - Kyle Busch led the final laps of this race in 2010 as
well. He had 2.5 second lead and the "unnecessary" caution was thrown
with 3 laps to go. Ryan Newman then scored the win.
In 2017, Kyle Busch led the final laps again with the familiar margin.
Then the caution flag was thrown for Joey Logano's blown tire and guess
who won the race? Ryan Newman.

Looks like that bloody bad luck doesn't want Kyle Busch to score his
first win with JGR at Phoenix and to set a record that no other car
number but #18 won at all current Monster Energy Cup Series tracks
(Phoenix is the only track where Kyle Busch or Bobby Labonte in #18
hasn't won).

Mike Joy, Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Gordon were the commentators. Matt
Yocum, Vince Welch and Jamie Little were the pit road reporters. Larry
McReynolds was the in-race analyst. Chris Myers and Michael Waltrip were
in the Hollywood hotel.
