Still, will probably watch more of this race than I have been recently. I like a Gibbs car to win this one, most likely Kyle. 10. SMIFF TV posted: 03.31.2017 - 11:30 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Hey, even on a BAD day, Martinsville is still miles ahead of most every track when it comes to solid, rough-and-tumble stock car racing. No matter how much NASCAR meddles with the rules and race formats, it's practically impossible to ruin the racing there (outside of leaving the track altogether). 11. racefangurl posted: 04.01.2017 - 12:05 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 4, I remember one year, DW mentioned hot dogs in his line. This track is just incapable of putting on bad racing. I'm pumped for this weekend, even if I won't be there like I usually am. 13. cjs3872 posted: 04.01.2017 - 4:57 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) @13, that's because aerodynamics are a non-factor, and is the gap between the big teams and the smaller teams is also greatly diminished. Other than at the restrictor plate tracks, Martinsville may be the one place, even moreso than Bristol, where the smaller teams can compete with the bigger teams on relatively equal ground. Teams like Germain Racing and Front Row Motorsports, hardly juggernauts, have had some of their best non-restrictor plate outings at Martinsville because they don't have quite the disadvantage there that they have on most of the tracks NASCAR races on these days. If there's one thing that can be done to make the racing better, and Lord knows, they've tried, it's to make the outside groove good enough to where teams won't practically stop short leaving pit road, just so they lose the one position that allows them to start on the low line. Obviously, Martinsville is always going to favor the inside groove, because the hairpin turns are more like what you might see on a road course (and drivers with road racing backgrounds have done better there than one might expect), but it is somewhat comical, and even farcical to a degree, that teams will intentionally lose a spot on pit road just to gain the inside line on the restart. The same is true in reverse at Bristol, where teams intentionally lose a spot to get the OUTSIDE groove on the restarts, where it seems that the cars on the upper groove have about 50-100 more HP because of the huge momentum edge they get on the restarts on the upper groove there. I will say that, with just 38 cars starting, which is an 11.6% reduction in the size of the field, compared to the size of the field from 1998-2015, and is the smallest field for a Cup race at Martinsville since the fall race in 1996 (which saw just 35 laps of caution and a 200-lap green flag run), the drivers will have a little more room to operate than in years gone by, which in turn, may mean fewer cautions and a better flow to the race. That, by itself, may lead to better racing. 14. 23andJoe posted: 04.01.2017 - 7:13 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) I'm of two minds about there being only 38 cars. On the one hand, it does give more track room and better racing - the fields on short tracks really shouldn't have gone to 43. On the other hand, the fact that that's 38 cars /total/, not just 38 /starters/, shows just how much the field is a "closed club" nowadays. I still remember back in '96, when Stacy Compton, who was at the time just a fairly average driver in the mid-Atlantic's famous Late Model Stock Cars, had his team owner buy what was left of the #31 Hardee's team, roll a car out at spring Martinsville, and Compton qualified ninth. That would - really, it /can't/ - happen today, and that's really a total shame. 15. Anthony posted: 04.01.2017 - 8:32 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The high lane at Martinsville used to be quite good, until the 2004 repave of course. The race before this one at Martinsville had 36 starters from 42 entrants. I believe at the time NASCAR limited the number of starters in relation to the size of the track. A rule they got rid of the very next year. 17. Corey posted: 04.01.2017 - 9:21 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Smallest entry field Martinsville, Fall 1993. And there were other races from the mid-80s that had as few as 30 starters, the exact number that qualified on time back then. Only 29 cars started (and 30 were entered for) the fall race in 1983. But not counting races where entrants that withdrew or failed to qualify are not mentioned, it didn't become commonplace for there to be more than a full field of entries (only 30 qualified on time with two provisional starting spots) until around 1990. When that began to happen, NASCAR expanded the field by two spots, to 32 qualifiers and two provisionals for 34 starters, in 1993, and added two more time trial spots a couple of years later, boosting the size of the field to 36 cars. This doesn't take into consideration the champion's provisional, which was added in 1990. 21. Suburban Shaman posted: 04.01.2017 - 7:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Thanks chevyfan. 22. I've been a hardcore fan since 2001. I didn't leave after 2009 and I certainly won't now. But he's an embarrassment to the 88 team and he needs to retire or have Hendrick give him the boot for Alex Bowman. All of which is painful to say. But it needs to be said. Greg Ives is not the problem. The car is not the problem. The person driving it, God love him, is one of the most likable people NASCAR's ever had and he's generally a fantastic person with his fans. Her wonderful, smart, talented crew chief is why she was running that far up the field. Even if Hamlin didn't get into her, she was put into the outside line and was set to get trained to the 17th-20th position. It would be one thing if he was running like he did in 2009 or 2010 but hes not... Daytona: Wrecked while leading Atlanta: Was in the Top 10 until a speeding penalty then had a cut tire which prevented him from gaining his laps back Las Vegas: Ran top 10 all day until the end of the race when Greg Ives didn't correctly adjust the tire pressures on the last stop, which are words from Dale himself that he said on his podcast on his website the day after the race. Phoenix: Probably the "worst" the 88 team has run all year. Jr struggled most of this race after starting up front and him and crew just couldn't get a handle on the car. Fontana: Started at the rear after the team found a cut tire on the car before the race and worked up into the top 15 and stayed there pretty much the whole race. Martinsville: Started mid pack, ran into the top 10 then got spun. He then proceed to run back into the top 5 and stayed in the top 10 until he got caught for speeding. The he ran back into the top 15 before he got in a wreck caused by Denny Hamlin. The 88 car has clearly shown top 10 speed at 4 of the 6 races this year. Jr is the least of the teams worries right now. If there's anything a Jr fan wants to complain about right now it's probably Greg Ives. Jr already kind of threw Ives under the bus after Vegas, Then Greg followed that up by not being able to keep up with the track a week later at Phoenix. Ives then also made a blunder at Fontana by not pitting Jr under the last yellow which led to Jr being the first car in front of Chase who was the first car with new tires. As bad as all that sounds though, Greg, who's weak spot has always been in race strategy and adjustment calls dating back to when he was with Chase in the Xfinity series, has probably only cost Dale 10 maybe 15 points so far this year. The reason the 88 team is far back in the points isn't because Dale suddenly sucks or Ives is terrible crew chief. It's because he got screwed out of 50-60 points between Daytona and Martinsville alone because of accidents out of his control. Take away those two races and Dale is probably around 12th in points with a few top 10'S and everyone who thinks he washed up wouldn't be running their mouths..... 264. When you take a top-five car and 2009 the hell out of it by speeding and wrecking, that's not on Ives. The problem is, whenever the driver actually gets his head out of his behind, the car will be garbage and they'll still run 23rd. I have mentioned this before on some driver or race comment sections, but not sure where. I saw some of his stuff on here a few years ago and certain it was him. Not to promote his creepy work, but if you need a few old school examples and want to "compare the style" look at the driver comments of back of the pack drivers from a few years back. Larry Gunselman, Josh Wise, Scott Speed, Tony Raines (especially), Jeff Green, Mike Skinner, Scott Riggs, TJ Bell, Dennis Setzer, Mcdowell, Todd Bodine, and more. Be nice for a moderator to clean some of that mess up. Maybe ban the ip. He always posted with weird names...and usually a new name every post. He also had conversations with himself and always made up these fake news stories. The last year or two I saw that he was still posting here, but stayed almost exclusively to ARCA, but I believe your troll has been here for awhile. The TBR cars have historically been better than BK, Premium, Circle Sport/TMG, Go Fas, and obviously Ware, so I'd think they would go with a driver who gives them their best chance to capitalize with a top-30 finish. I don't think Yeley is much of a Cup driver at this point in his career. Brad won at Iowa, Nashvile, Memphis, Gateway, and IRP in NXS Pretty amazing he done all this in only 9 years, 2008-2017 If Brad can win at Indy and Homestead, Penske would have a win at every active track. When we compare Brad Keselowski to Kyle Busch after their first 7 years as full-time drivers in Cup, Kyle had 23 wins, Brad has 22 wins. Kyle had 7 tracks left to win at, Brad has 8. Both have that great average of number of races minus 50 and then the decimal point is moved by 1 to the right - not many drivers were able to keep it that way (for example, if you have 500 Cup starts, 45+ wins is a good average). However, Brad is one year older than Kyle, so their gap in number of wins won't chance much most probably (as long as somebody suddenly retires), but Brad will run out of good years at some point of his later career. He needs to have at least 5 good seasons without Kyle competing to catch up to him (as long as they keep winning the same amount of races each year). And there's also Joey Logano who is 5 years younger than Kyle, so as long as he keeps winning up to 4 races each year, he can catch up to Kyle someday, because in this case, it's Kyle who will run out of good years sooner. And it's a pity Logano wasted 4 years in JGR's 20 car, otherwise he could have as many wins as Brad, or even more with that extra full-time year. It's pretty obvious Brad and Joey are almost equal at Penske Racing. 321. JSPorts posted: 04.04.2017 - 9:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I definitely think Kyle will end with more wins than Brad. I'd imagine Brad racing until he's around 40 or 45, but I have a feeling Kyle will stick around until he's not competitive anymore, which will probably be 45 or 50. Logano is a hard guy to place here. I have to believe he'll eventually win a championship, but he hasn't yet. However, if 2017 is a year where there is a big "changing of the guard", so to speak, and guys like Johnson, Kenseth, Earnhardt, Harvick, Kurt, etc. begin to fall off without Elliott, Larson, maybe a Dillon or Jones catching them right away, then this championship could be between the Penske cars, Kyle & maybe someone like Denny Hamlin or Martin Truex. 322. Ak47 posted: 04.04.2017 - 10:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) No way Brad ever catches Kyle. He's already down 15 wins and Kyle will be around at least as long as Brad. On top of that, they've been about equally dominant in recent years and are both in their absolute primes, which I don't think will change for either driver within the next ~7 years. Prediction Kyle Busch: 71 wins (33 more) Joey Logano: 66 wins (49 more) Brad Keselowski: 60 wins (37 more) I don't think Larson or Elliott will ever reach those levels because they'll be contending with those three, and Hamlin, Truex, and Harvick still going for a few more years, and other young talents such as Blaney, Erik Jones and William Byron coming into the fold. It'll be a while before Chase and Larson have a chance to dominate the way Kyle, Brad, and Joey have of late. 323. Eric posted: 04.04.2017 - 1:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think the projection of wins could be off in the future due to the following things: 1.) NASCAR is considering more Restrictor plate races happening in a season and that includes Michigan. Restrictor plates is a big strength of Brad as a driver. I also know NASCAR is considering Pocono for plates, but that is a bad idea. 2.) It is possible that IMS could be leaving the cup schedule after 2020 if restrictor plates don't work and the attendance continues to decline at the track. The track that replaces IMS would affect win totals depending on what the track is. 325. Ak47 posted: 04.04.2017 - 1:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @324 I don't follow how that will severely impact their win trajectories. All three are good literally everywhere, and have roughly equal probabilities of winning on any track type. All three can win RP races (less so Kyle), all are good on road courses (assuming more are added) --in fact, Joey is outstanding on road courses--, and all three drivers are typically in the mix at any short or intermediate track the last several years. A change in schedule, regardless of how, would be unlikely to severely hinder any of those drivers' abilities to win with their current frequency. 326. Eric posted: 04.04.2017 - 2:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @325, Brad is not on the level as Kyle Busch and Logano for road course racing. Brad isn't bad, but Kyle to me is the best road course driver of the 3 with Logano 2nd. Kyle Busch already has 4 road course wins compare to Logano's 1. I think Kyle Busch right is the best road course in the cup series not named A.J. Allmendinger. I think its possible that Kyle would be in the top 3 for most road course wins by a cup driver all time. You overrating Brad and Kyle at Michigan right now. Kyle only has 1 win and 6 top 10's in 24 races there and I consider him the worse of the 3 at the track. That is odd considering how good Kyle Busch is at Auto Club with him being the best of the 3 at Auto Club. Logano is the best of the 3 at Michigan and Logano has been extremely strong there since he joined Penske. Making Michigan a plate race actually would stop Logano leading as many laps there and it would make Brad stronger than and get more wins there. Brad's problem at Michigan is he never won there and doesn't dominate there like Logano does there and isn't great at Auto Club. Remember Kyle is the best at IMS right now and expect Kyle to win more at the track before the track is going or gets turned into a plate track. What is happening right now is Jimmie is not in his prime as a driver and that opens it up to Kyle. Kyle has a top 10 finish in 10 of his 12 races there. Brad doesn't have a top 5 at IMS, and Logano isn't quite on Kyle's level at IMS. If that track does away, Kyle's edge would be gone. 327. Ak47 posted: 04.04.2017 - 2:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @326 I don't disagree with your facts, but what I'm arguing is that no change to one or several race dates/packages for certain tracks will make any of those drivers anything less than 3-4 wins per year (on average) level of drivers. And RPs at Indy, as stated by Xfinity drivers who tested there, won't allow for huge drafting packs like Daytona and Talladega, so if RPs are expanded to another 6 races hypothetically, some of these might exhibit a racing style unique from anything currently on the schedule. And as long as there is Atlanta, Dover, Charlotte, Kentucky, Bristol, Martinsville, Kansas, Homestead, Richmond, Vegas, and the road courses, each of those 3 drivers will have PLENTY of stomping grounds regardless of any changes. More RP races also could mean more regression to the mean, as 4 largely random affairs in any given year isn't exactly indicative of any greater trend in a lot of instances, except for a few drivers such as Brad who are capable of thoroughly dominating those races at will -- which lends him comparison to the likes of Earnhardt and Gordon more so than any other current driver. (Yeah yeah Jimmie is great at RPs as well, and Junior, but Junior obviously falters when given an all-around comparison, and his days of being competitive in Cup are very numbered, if not already at their end) 328.
