Denny Hamlin, Chase Elliott, Kyle Busch, Erik Jones and Jimmie Johnson have all spun or wrecked. Sunday will be interesting for sure. 3. It looks like its working at the start of this weekend. 4. Anonymous posted: 04.07.2017 - 10:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Jimmie Johnson only has one top ten so far this year. McDowell might have a chance at a top 15 or even a top 10 if gets a little help. And, Derrike Cope is the only guy in this field who participated in the first race at TMS 7. After turning his first fast lap in the first round of qualifying, Jimmie Johnson got loose and tried chasing the car up the track in turn 1 before spinning out, which flat spotted three of his tires. Because of that, the 48 team didn't make a run in round 3. I'm assuming that the team will change tires before the race, and I believe that means they'll have to start in the rear, although I'm not sure. Landon Cassill had a strong qualifying run, he was actually among the fastest 12 drivers in round 2 of quals before being knocked out right near the end. 9. Pretty bad when procedures they enforce doesn't allow as many teams get through inspection as seen today. Just another stupid of a long list of things since Brain France took over 16. cjs3872 posted: 04.08.2017 - 7:06 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Given the fact that so many of the top drivers didn't even get a chance to qualify (fully one-quarter of the field is listed as having no qualifying time, with all but one of those never got out), in addition to the fact that the track may be a one-groove track from the repave, and despite Kevin Harvick being on the pole, this race seems to have "major upset" written all over it, and if there's ever to be a race with a surprise first-time winner, this would figure to be the one. And among those drivers, Ryan Blaney and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. may be the prime threats to grab that upset first-time win, given how well the Fords are running. If this race is as treacherous as it seems it's going to be, there may be a winner nobody would expect, much like the first race held at Texas 20 years ago, a race that did have that long-shot first-time winner in Jeff Burton, and a LOT of carnage. 17. You fail tech, that's on the teams. If this was a situation where the teams never had a chance to get inspected, that's a whole new issue, but from the looks of it, seems teams are just getting caught. 19. Just another stupid of a long list of things since Brain France took over" Every team knows exactly what it will take for their car to pass tech. Why are you blaming NASCAR for teams not getting through inspection and out on track? Every team had the opportunity to get through tech inspection ONE time before qualifying. Is it NASCAR's fault that crew chiefs are continuously trying to push the boundaries? No. That's the job of the crew chief: push the boundaries to make their car better. That's how it's been for the entirety of NASCAR. For pre-qualifying inspection, NASCAR is cutting down on the "games" that the crew chiefs have been playing for qualifying. I'm willing to bet the 9 teams that didn't get a chance to qualify will make sure their car passes tech inspection the FIRST time next week. 20. He was faster than Johnson and Logano in front of him, but couldn't get by Logano until two to go. I guess the only thing that would've kept him from passing Jimmie would've been the lack of clean air. Feel gutted for Blaney today, had the best car IMO, but the "stage strategy" hurt him, and once he was back in 20th for the restart with 156 laps to go, it was just too hard to make up the time. He clawed his way up to eighth or so before the debris caution with 34 laps left, but the dagger was the mistake he made on the yellow-flag stop when he overshot his stall. Oh well, at least there are stage points that helped him salvage a decent points day. 106. 18fan posted: 04.09.2017 - 9:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Where Blaney got messed up the most was on the restart that started the 3rd stage. One of the worst I've ever been to. This race proves why stages are ridiculous. Blaney had the best car and probably would've won the race, but he had to stay out to try to win the stage, and then got stuck back in 20th. And some of the guys who ended up getting rewarded in stage points didn't really run well during the day. Then there were the three debris cautions, which watered down the product. It was almost impossible to pass out there, though I expect that to improve as the track wears. 111. He was fully capable of finishing top 10 at Martinsville, and yet people freaked out like he's garbage after that race. I mean... he literally could've finished 5th at Martinsville if he didn't encounter any issues, and people were saying Danica's better now? Like, have you watched any qualifying? Any practice sessions? Anything of any race? He had some 14th-16th place runs but he also showed signs of being much better than that. There was another race like that this year, too, where Jr easily could've gotten a t10 had they played their cards right. Most of the Hendrick cars have struggled thus far this year. You had literally no reason to believe that Jr was done as a driver or incapable of running t5/t10. He had shown signs of speed and anyone who was paying attention isn't surprised by his run at Texas in the slightest. 114. Mannoroth posted: 04.10.2017 - 7:02 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 97. You really thought JJ will be winless this year? Just a matter of time and still the same circle - win early (to secure a spot in the Chase) and then back off. The only question is, if Jimmie finally decided to score points properly or if he's back in his old "I don't give a damn about anything, but the Chase and the championship" attitude. Just 2 wins to catch Yarborough, 3 wins to catch Darrell Waltrip with Bobby Allison and then 12 wins to catch his former teammate Jeff Gordon. And lastly, only 113 comments for a CUP RACE? Seriously? Well... something is wrong. 115. Not sure if there's anybody else, aside from Jimmie joining the club. It's a pretty incredible accomplishment, when you think about it. 116. The LIS system is so unreliable that many cars built to spec will fail the first try and instantly pass by a significant margin upon 2nd try without a single change at all. The LIS system is one of the biggest problems with tech right now. Of course, crew chiefs are pushing limits, too, and several cars fail their first try because of their setup, but the LIS system is a joke right now and anyone who works on a Cup team knows it. 117. racefangurl posted: 04.10.2017 - 2:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 114, must be the forum's fault. He struggled in 2014 in most races, it was simply the worst year of his career, but Truex had even dominated somewhere around 7-10 races in the 56 car before losing in brutal ways. The 78 has been set up great, but I can't discount the value of having a more competitive pit crew (despite even them losing him a few races in the 78) and a crew chief who has a higher percentage of "right" calls. Chad Johnston really struggled with pit strategy with Truex. 121. There were several times during the 2012 season where they were capable of winning races, but a pit road mistake and/or an ill-timed caution cost them a win. He dominated the race at Kansas that year, but on that last run, his car got really tight and lost the lead late to Denny Hamlin. MWR was really becoming a strong team around that time (Bowyer was a championship contender in that 15 car), but then Mikey thought he could bend the rules, and it was all downhill after that. 124. Ak47 posted: 04.10.2017 - 10:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Matt G - you're right. The last caution with 35 to go seemed like the classic BS caution, with no debris shown and doubtful any "debris" that was out there could have caused anyone harm. They got to bunch everyone up for a late restart and see an "exciting finish" The whole thing helped out Logano big time, who stayed out on a strategy move due to a reaaaaaaalllllly late green flag pit stop, only about 10 or 15 laps before the yellow and held off johnson for almost 15 laps after the restart. Reminded me a bit of Tony at Sonoma last year, especially if Logano had won. Silliest part is Johnson was closing down on Harvick with 35 to go, and there might have been a really good finish without the phony debris caution 126. Ak47 posted: 04.10.2017 - 10:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'll follow that up by saying the 123 lap run preceding that caution was one of the better 100+ lap runs in recent years. Pit strategy had thrown some wrenches into the equation, leading to a lot of drivers coming and going throughout the run. As I said, Johnson was hot on Harvick's tail, and the top 8 were still within about 7 seconds of the lead. True racing fans want to see a test of man, machine, and strategy. 129 is right - despite their problems, the major open-wheel and endurance series let their races play out naturally whenever possible. By throwing a yellow whenever they get bored and bunching up the field, NASCAR nullifies the effect of true strategy and natural determination, all in the name of "entertainment". Late-race cautions (last 10 laps) create especially artificial outcomes because the late tire stops and ensuing restart create outcomes that never could have happened naturally, especially because half the field is stuck in the lesser racing groove on the restart. If you buy that there were 4 legitimate times when debris was worth stopping the race's natural course, NASCAR already has you eating out of their hand. But don't complain when there's no NASCAR anymore because all the fans of true auto racing have changed the channel for good. 133. JSPorts posted: 04.11.2017 - 10:10 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'll tell you this: there were three debris cautions, and every time the caution came out, I scanned the area of the track (front stretch, turn 1, etc.) where they said the debris was. The only place that there was actually debris was in turn 1, and it was out of the groove. The other two were phony cautions to break up the action. Logano tried a different strategy because his team ran the race normally (how you would before stages) instead of backwards. So they pitted when they needed to for tires & fuel versus the others, who were pitting as soon as possible to make it to the end. Jimmie was on Harvick's tail at the end, but I doubt he would've passed him. Passing was nearly impossible on Sunday after the repave. The only reason Johnson passed Logano was that the 22 was on old tires. 134. Since the Top Ten in Stages 1 and 2 get points they should not inconspicuously be listed after the results. Instead it would be useful to have two columns between "Status" and "Led" or between "Led" and "Pts" which show these positions. This also would help to understand the amount of points a particular driver scored. 140. When i watch the races, especially when they go to commercial, I'm always cringing knowing the next phony yellow is probably just around the corner, ready to ruin real racing with yellow flag pit stops and a double-file restart. On another note, for those fans who attend races often, does NASCAR always send the truck out for debris cautions, even in cases where the debris is no real hazard, or are there times when they don't even bother and it's evident they were simply going for an entertainment bunch-up.
