Jamie McMurray has now started in the top 10 in every race this season, the only driver to do so. Impressive feat as we hit the quarter pole on the Cup season. 2. I've really grown to hate NASCAR over the past 5 years. The grandstands continue to dwindle and so does my hope for the sport. I don't really care if I sound like the average angry NASCAR fan, I'm just pissed I kissed this sports ass for years and we see this. Many people have but now diehard fans don't care anymore. I just don't care what happens. Anything can happen. The day NASCAR actually listens to the fans who've supported them their lifetimes will be the day they go bankrupt, because all they've shown over the years is the care for $$$ and hype to get suckers to watch. 102. I thought it was decent apart from that. 111. cjs3872 posted: 04.30.2017 - 11:33 pm Rate this comment: (7) (0) I see nobody has mentioned this, so I will. The mere fact that Joey Logano won the race and THREE drivers scored MORE points than Logano did just shows what a terrible idea stage racing is. Not only that, but Kyle Larson, who finished 14th, only got four fewer points than Logano did. As controversial as previous points formats may have been, at least the guy that won the race got the most points (which is why the possibility of the second place finisher getting as many points as the winner for many years due to lap leader bonus points was easily the weakest part of the old Latford system introduced in 1975). What happened at Richmond today, with three different drivers getting more points than the winner (Brad Keselowski getting EIGHT more points and both Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin getting five more points), as well as the 14th place finisher getting just a couple of points less than the winner (four, to be exact) is an absolute travesty, not to mention Matt Kenseth getting just nine fewer points finishing all the way down in 23rd. The driver and team that wins the race should always get the most points. It's as simple as that, and this race may be the first one to show what a terrible idea stage racing is, as far as the points standings go. Now I know that simply winning a race qualifies a driver for the Chase, especially this year where there's no chance of more than 16 drivers winning during the first 26 races (there might not be more than nine or ten), but to have three drivers earning more than the race winner and a driver that finishes as low as 14th almost getting as many points is just plain wrong, and NASCAR needs to be called on that total injustice. As for the race, this was another typical Joey Logano victory, in that he simply seemed to wait and bide his time, and when the opportunity arose, this time in the form of a pit stop his team chose not to make, Joey barged through with both feet and scored yet another win in a race that he seemed to be a total non-factor in until it counted. Joey Logano is most dangerous when he's just off the pace of the leaders, because that seems to be when he scores his victories, and that was proven again today. I said a couple of years ago that he's like two other Penske drivers who ran those same yellow Pennzoil colors for Penske in the 80s, Al Unser and Rick Mears, because they would usually wait until the latter stages of the race to show their hand, and when it was time, show speed they didn't seem to have, and Logano has that knack for being able to win races from off the pace, as he did today. 112. It's cool to see some videogame on a hood of some car and especially, if that car wins the race. Joey Logano won with Max Payne 3 at Talladega and with Call of Duty - Black Ops II at Charlotte in Xfinity in 2012. And also with Epic Mickey 2 at Phoenix, but that game isn't AAA (the most expected from the top developers). 115. I liked the race, only part where it really fell off was the first half of the last stage, but apart from that, I thought it was ok. Also, NASCAR listening to it's fans won't fix this. You need way more than just to keep the fans you have, you need to bring it new fans, but racing isn't the cool thing sadly, and that's one of the millions of problems facing NASCAR. 117. I'm curious what makes you say that. While it's certainly unlikely that more than 16 drivers will win a race by the time we return to Richmond, it's not impossible, and there will almost certainly be more than 9 or 10 different winners. We already have 7, with a number of big names yet to win this year (Harvick, KyBusch, Kenseth, Elliott, Hamlin, Bowyer) and others who could get a win (such as Earnhardt Jr, McMurray, Blaney, Jones, Allmendinger). 119. I knew the segment wins go toward Playoff Points, I think everyone is getting out of control with this system. I knew a few weeks ago (what CJS mentioned of nearly 4 drivers scoring more points than the race winner) that the points was going to be screwed up over the course of the season. The WINNER OF the race should be GUARANTEE maximum points or a BOOST to maximum points as the next guy + 1 or so (etc, 51 to top Keselowski's total of 50). That'd be logical, so as bad as you've done the first two segments (finishing 11th both of them? No worries, the overall official victory makes up for it). That should be the case. 122. cjs3872 posted: 05.01.2017 - 4:02 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @121, or simply add more weight to the top finishing positions, which the system I devised a few years ago does. The one point-per-position dumb-down of the points structure for even the top finishing positions is really what's at fault here. Keep the points for finishing out of the top ten what they currently are, but make it 2 per position from 6th-10th, 3 per position from 2nd to fifth and 5 between first and second (which is currently done). Currently, the 11th place finisher gets 26 points. From there, bump it up to two points per position from 10th up to sixth, meaning that 10th would get 28, ninth 30, eighth 32, seventh 34, and sixth would get 36 points (one more than second currently gets). From there, you bump it up to three points per position, meaning that from 36 points for finishing sixth, a driver would get 39 for finishing fifth, 42 for fourth, 45 for third and 48 for second. That would mean that the winner would get 53 points, since there would be a five-point difference between winning and finishing second. And while this would not completely undo the abomination of a possibility for the winner to not get the most points, it certainly would greatly diminish the possibility of this happening, and would all-but eliminate the chances of three or more drivers getting more points than the winner using the current stage scoring system. It also means that the driver that wins the race would get twice as many points as the driver who finishes 11th (53-26), and about 20% more than the driver that finishes fourth (53-42), not counting stage points, which I think should be reduced to five positions maximum if they're going to keep it. 123. racefangurl posted: 05.02.2017 - 1:10 am Rate this comment: (1) (1) Maybe they should give stage points to just the winner and then just 1. Since the Top Ten in Stages 1 and 2 get points they should not inconspicuously be listed after the results. Instead it would be useful to have two columns between 'Status' and 'Led' or between 'Led' and 'Pts' which show these positions. In this race you would see why Keselowski, Hamlin and Harvick scored more points than Logano and how Kenseth scored good points despite finishing in the lower half of the field. 125. After all, I believe it was his performance in the spring race at Talladega last year (he led 22 laps and finished tenth) that gave the confidence boost that he needed going forward. I don't think he upsets Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson at the end of the first heat for the All-Star Race or makes a late-race rally to finish third at last year's Firecracker 400 if not for the confidence boost he got by running up front and leading laps in last year's Talladega spring race. Heck, he was even in contention to qualify for the Chase last year until the last two races before the cutoff. Not to mention the fact that Roush Racing is on the upswing. He's certainly not one of the favorites, but I'm not sure I'd classify him as an underdog, either. I would put him and teammate Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. somewhere in between. But if you wanted to pick a longshot for the race at Talladega, certainly one of the Front Row Motorsports drivers, one of whom already has a win for that team in the Talladega spring race (David Ragan in 2013 when he led a Front Row Motorsports 1-2 finish), would be a good longshot pick. But of course, as we all know, how the race at Talladega shakes out will be determined by how many cars get involved in the big wrecks, because usually half to two-thirds of the field are involved in wrecks. Any driver that can stay out of the wrecks might have a good chance at a top 10-15 finish, even with the slowest car in the field. 130. racefangurl posted: 05.02.2017 - 10:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) My 'Dega underdogs are Sadler, Gaughan, McDowell, Almirola, Patrick, Dillon, Menard, DiBenedetto, Whitt, Cassill and Ragan. 131. If you had made the same comment about Trevor Bayne at this time last year going into the Talladega spring race, I wouldn't have agreed with you more, because the Roush cars were junk, but if either Bayne or Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. won at Talladega, I wouldn't consider it a surprise at all, based on how good Roush is running, especially compared to the past two or three seasons. And the same is very definitely true regarding Bowyer, who's in the best car he's had in about four years. It all depends on who avoids the inevitable crashes, because I think 50-70% of the field is going to be involved in crashes. And yes @133, I also find the new ESPN Jayski site more difficult to navigate, though there are pluses and minuses with that. The minus part is navigating the Jayski site, because it is harder to access some of the material that was much easier to get to in the past (such as the articles), but because it's now a part of the greater ESPN site, it also makes it easier to navigate to the various sports to see what's going on elsewhere in the world of sports (which is important to general sports fans, given the NBA and NHL playoffs are going on, among other things), so it's a trade-off. 136. They'll probably appeal to get Todd on the box for Dega, but the next two races are Kansas and Charlotte, both chase races, that's why the 2 car has been appealing their penalty, they want Paul Wolfe on the call on the tracks where there is a chase race. 147. They take the top five plus one random finisher to immediate post-race inspection and they then take two or three cars, including the winning car, to their base in Charlotte for further inspection. But there may be, and probably are, a number of other teams playing around with the rules that know they're never going to be caught, simply because they know they can't finish among the leaders, but fudge with the rules to get better finishes than they'd ordinarily get. But because some of those teams know that they can't finish among the leaders, they'll fudge with the rules knowing their cars are never going to get inspected. And as for someone running in the back half of the top ten staying out on old tires and ending up winning because of a pit stop they didn't make. I watched most of the race and for the most part, nobody was able to make any moves of significance all day long. In fact, Joey Logano's moving up from the back to the back of the top ten, which took about 300 laps, was about as big a move as anyone made, and much of that was from pit stops, because of how good their pit crew is. And had Logano finished in the back half of the top ten, as it looked like he was going to before the caution and strategy call that put him up front, NASCAR would have never found the infraction because his car would likely have never been inspected, since he would not likely have finished high enough for his car to get inspected. But only two cars, those of Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin, were really able to make up any ground on the track all day long. Everyone else among the front runners pretty much got up there based on their qualifying runs or by late race pit strategy. 149.
