Kennington qualified for the Daytona 500 earlier this year but ended up being the lone DNQ for this race after Corey LaJoie, admittedly a series regular who races every week without a charter, pipped him in qualifying. On the other side of the coin Xfinity Series racer Brendan Gaughan makes the field for underdog Beard Oil effort. He just missed a top-10 at wheel of their #75 Chevrolet in the Daytona 500 so here's hoping he can give the David outfit another good run against the Cup series' regular Goliaths. 4. Toyota brought him back in the week leading up to this race to try and set the world speed record for a sport utility vehicle. He cranked up a skunkworks-modified Toyota Landcruiser to 230.2 MPH on the runways of California's Mojave Air and Space Port to break the old speed record by about 19 miles per hour. 10. In fact, as I noted a few days ago in the thread for the previous race, I didn't think it would have been a surprise for either Roush car to win, because of how good they've run at the plate tracks. And if a Roush driver figured to win at Talladega, it would figure to be Stenhouse, since his aggressive nature is what usually wins plate races. But it was a tactical move he made on the final restart that I believe allowed him to win. On the last couple of restarts, Kyle Busch was getting a lead on the field, so on that last restart, Stenhouse (and Kasey Kahne) let him get a bigger lead, knowing that would allow him to catch Kyle Busch, and he made his move into turn three. Then Jimmie Johnson, ever the championship tactician, teamed up with Stenhouse knowing he wouldn't be as big a threat in the championship as Kyle Busch (or any other potential chaser Stenhouse might have knocked out with his win today), so he decided that if he couldn't win, he wasn't going to allow Kyle Busch to win and gain extra bonus points on him, so he teamed up with Stenhouse to push him ahead of Kyle Busch, and Kyle never could get back past Stenhouse. This victory by Stenhouse also broke a LONG dryspell for car owner Jack Roush, who hadn't seen victory lane since the 2014 season (and doesn't figure to get back there again this season, unless it's at one of the other two plate races), and it also means that Roush is back in the Chase for the first time since 2014, with Stenhouse as his Chase representative. 175. Ricky Stenhouse finally gets his first win in the Cup Series, it took him 158 starts to get it, but it was well worth it. But he had a fast car and like he said, give the credit to those guys back at the shop because when you pull off the pole and winning the race, those are special moments. * Danica Patrick also gets her first trip to victory lane in Cup, not as a driver but as Ricky's girlfriend and love interest, but nonetheless she has to be happy for him and seeing her celebrating with her man was great considering the rough day she had. * Kyle Busch again proves that he isn't the best late in races this year. They are still giving him good race cars, yet he still finishes third. Busch could pull away from everybody on the restart, but at times the power his fast engine had got the best of him because its harder to keep the lead when you have a large lead like that. Still, Kyle Busch will get his win but he needs to be patient and in the right place at the right time, today Ricky Stenhouse was. * The Big One looked scary. AJ Allmendinger got aggressive and tried to bump Chase Elliott but the run sent Elliott spinning and caused a huge pileup with about 19 laps to go which ended with Chase halfway on his lid and AJ Allmendinger on his lid and collected about 14 other drivers. * Dale Jr. finishes 22nd in his last spring race at Talladega, he had a tire that came apart and had the replace the whole spacer and wheel. He was high as 15th at one point so he could move up but there was a lot of traffic to work through. 179. 1995z71 posted: 05.07.2017 - 8:37 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Stenhouse the last 3 races: A Top 10, then a Top 5, then a win. 180. Roush only has 2 top 5's on 1.5 and 2 mile tracks since the start of the 2015 season including none this year. Roush in 2013 and 2014 already was declining on those type of tracks and they haven't recovered yet. Their speciality right now is restrictor plate tracks and ovals that are less than 1.5 miles. Stenhouse this year at 1.5 and 2 mile tracks have finishes of 13,33,22, and 14. Bayne's finishes at those tracks are 12,13,23 and 13. That means while Roush's intermediate problem is getting betting, it is the organizations weakness that is going to be exploited during chase time. Restrictor plate tracks is where most teams a chance for a top 10 or a win. The 1 mile or less tracks that Ricky did well this year is at tracks that the driver is supposed to mean more than aerodynamics and horsepower. I think Roush is missing something at 1.5 and 2 mile oval tracks right now either in horsepower, aerodynamics, handling or a combination of all 3 that is preventing them from being a top 10 finish at those track instead of a top 15. 185. In their heyday, Roush won when they outhandled the competition, and to that end, Mark Martin, Jeff Burton, and later Matt Kenseth were always known for running more laps in practice than anyone else to try to get a better handle on their cars for long runs, since most races back then had a greater importance on how cars did on longer runs. These days, long run speed is not nearly as important as it was back in the 90s and 2000s, and short run speed, and raw speed for that matter, is more important now than it's ever been, and that has hurt teams like Roush and Childress in recent seasons, especially since both organizations have long been known for running their engines on the more conservative side. And looking at Roush's team, they're certainly running much better than they have since 2014, but the plate tracks are about the only tracks where they can win, simply because it mitigates the disadvantages they're otherwise at on the mid-size tracks in terms of pure speed, and while the jury's still out on whether Ryan Newman's win earlier this season at Phoenix is going to be RCR's only win in 2017, I have almost no doubt that Stenhouse's win at Talladega will be Roush's only win this season, and that Stenhouse will be Roush's lone representative in this year's Chase, but at least he'll have a car in the Chase. 193. They won 5 times in those 2 years and Biffle's Michigan win was their only win on an oval longer than 1 mile. That time period of Roush is one that they can win at smaller tracks or at road course. His team elected to stay out during the final caution stole a top five finish out of it, but during the race, he really didn't run that well, even bringing out one of the cautions in that race when he hit the wall in turn four. If he had run in, or around the top five the whole day, I'd feel differently. And @200, when I thought up the places that Roush could get a win at later this year, I excluded the plate tracks, mainly because they run so well as Daytona and Talladega, which is why I said that their best chance outside the plate tracks to get another win is with Ricky at Bristol, since he always runs so well there. But I stated last week that if one of the Roush cars won at Talladega, that it would be no surprise to me because of how good they run, as well as the fact that the addition of the Stewart-Haas Racing organization has brought to the major Ford teams the very thing that SHR got from their long association with Hendrick Motorsports (and that Penske flat-out refused to do), and that's cooperation between the teams. They brought that back to Ford, and all the major Ford teams are seeing the benefits. That's why Roush's two cars and Richard Petty's #43 car are running better. They're getting the help from the other teams that they weren't getting before SHR joined the Ford ranks. 204. JSPorts posted: 05.09.2017 - 4:06 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Disagree about Richmond. Stenhouse qualified 4th and had a strong car until the crash. He spent the rest of the way racing back from 31st with a badly damaged car, stayed on the lead lap, and then held onto 4th at the end. He probably had a top-5 car, just got damaged in a crash. And I think if they were all on equal tires there at the end, he would've finished at least 4th. 205. oldschoolracing519 posted: 05.09.2017 - 7:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Todd Gordon was not the crew chief of the #22 this week, he sits out the next race also 206.
