Danica caught some air from that high speed impact and Almirola, 10 spots behind the chaos, piled in moments later with enough force all four wheels came off the ground from the impact. Patrick bailed out of her car very quickly after the wreck. Given how much fire there was in the #10 after the crash that was a very good call. 96. First, if anyone had any doubts, given her history going all the way back to her IndyCar days in the mid-2000s, it's obvious why any real racing fan despises Danica Patrick. It's because she showed her true "me first" colors, not showing any concern for Aric Almirola's condition, and instead crying a river over all her bad luck. I said when he hired her in 2012 that she was going to be nothing but bad news for Tony Stewart, and she's proving it in every way possible. On the other hand, Joey Logano, despite what people may think about how he races, showed the class usually associated with the organization for which he drives, Team Penske, when he first asked from inside his car just after the crash happened about how Danica was doing, and then in his interview was more worried about the well-being of Aric Almirola than he was anything else. There was a time before he joined Penske that he might not have exhibited this kind of class. So it's pretty obvious that the Penske influence has rubbed off on him, possibly more than on any driver he's ever hired, and his emotional interview brings to mind that, in his early years on the IndyCar circuit, Penske once withdrew a car driven by Gary Bettenhausen during a race at Michigan after the horrendous crash that cost Merle Bettenhausen his right arm, so that Gary could be by his brother's side. And as I was thinking about Aric's crash, and what injuries he might have sustained, one crash that came to mind was Bill Elliott's crash at Talladega in the 1996 Winston 500, in which his car got airborne and slammed back onto the ashpalt, bottom side first, and Elliott broke his hip and was out until the Firecracker 400 in early July. Robert Pressley had a similar crash early in the 1997 Daytona 500 and his car slammed back down from an even higher altitude than Elliott's car did the previous spring, though Pressley did not miss any races from his crash. Unfortunately, Almirola's injuries were significantly worse than what Elliott suffered in '96, as Almirola suffered a compression fracture of the T5 vertebra in his spine. 165. racefangurl posted: 05.14.2017 - 9:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) 161, Reed Sorenson's not necessarily an awful driver, but since Kansas is a 1.5 mile track, it may tell something about the cars. And on Danica and Joey, they showed how they really are. Danica cried over her bad luck and Joey was looking like he was gonna cry over a competitor's injury. I try to be Danica-neutral, as a female NASCAR fan, but right now I'm failing. I'm mad at her and not for the 1st time. I'm neutral, then mad and then I get over the madness and the cycle repeats. 166. She's not a particularly empathetic person in general, sure it's a flawed personality thing on her part but I don't think she really acted in any way different from what I'd normally expect of her. Her questionable personality traits are nothing compared to the typically disgusting things being said about her in every single Youtube/Facebook comment thread about the crash. With VERY few exceptions, NASCAR fans are entirely incapable of criticizing a female driver without resorting to misogyny, and until that changes, whatever arguments people try to make against her will be rendered invalid by default. 167. "With VERY few exceptions, NASCAR fans are entirely incapable of criticizing a female driver without resorting to misogyny, and until that changes, whatever arguments people try to make against her will be rendered invalid by default." I partly agree. There are some idiots out there who will bash her because of her gender. But the take out THOSE people, her criticism is warranted because she isn't very good. Add that her attitude isn't very good either yeah... I'd take 2005-2009 DP over the current one. Why? Cuz she actually cared about getting better. And stats show she didn't get better then stopped for whatever reason. "I agree with Anthony. It's not like she completely ignored the fact that Aric may or may not be injured after this crash. People don't want vanilla like Johnson, but then they don't want people to speak their minds. Can't have it both ways, everyone is different." It is another double standard this is fan base is guilty of. I remember a time when NASCAR fans wanted drivers too speak their minds but when said drivers did (regardless of who did the speaking) fans didn't like it. So what is it? It just on the list of things that this fanbase does and don't realize it or don't care. 171. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 05.15.2017 - 10:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) *did get better. Since you've decided to bring that subject up, let's hypothetically switch Joey's and Danica's interviews so that Danica had the one that everyone has been praising and Joey had the one that everyone was criticizing. If this was the reality, a lot of people would be hating on Joey (instead of praising him) and therefore this has nothing to do with gender. I rest my case. 173. If Aric is out for a prolonged period of time (and given the nature of his spinal injury, he may even want to think about retiring), I think that, at the very least, that he should give the team some feedback on it's cars, because he's one of those drivers who's known for finishing races, so if he does nothing else but keeps Petty's cars in one piece for an entire race and runs 15th-20th, with an occasional chance to win a plate race (if he's in the car for the Firecracker 400, which that team won in 2014), then I think the team won't be too upset with that. I don't think Regan's a long-term solution, even if Aric has to hang it up because of the nature of his injuries, but he's a good stop-gap driver. And let's not forget that when he drove the #88 car a few years ago when Dale, Jr. had to sit out a couple of races due to concussion issues, that team did not lose anything, because Regan was very competitive in that #88 car, something that led Dale, Jr. to hire him for his Nationwide (now XFinity) Series team. 179. Indy wasn't designed for NASCAR a first place. It is an extreme difficult track to pass for the low downforce cars NASCAR uses. This also was one of the first tracks to have the dreaded "areo push". Areo push is when the car behind the leader is much faster than the leader, but can't pass due to dirty air. 182. Eric posted: 05.19.2017 - 8:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @182, There is flaw with not wanting a track to be moved despite its very poor attendance. IMS is at the point that you can move the track date for a road course in Canada and it would look empty like it would at IMS I don't care if you don't want the track date moved in this case. The track you like, might get up to 50,000 fans for the NASCAR date at IMS, but has no problems getting 5 or 6 times that total for the Indy 500. That shows NASCAR has major problems with drawing fans with that track. The fact is IMS is so desperate for trying to attract fans that they are trying to talking NASCAR into using the road course there. The problem is I don't think that is going to increase the amount of fans going to the track for NASCAR. 184. Eric posted: 05.19.2017 - 8:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) My own take is Indy is a lost cause. Tiregate ruined the NASCAR date and the novelty of stock cars racing at IMS went away years ago. The road course IMS has, can't change the decline of fans because of the popularity of NASCAR has went down a lot and Tiregate gave a bad taste in the fans mouth. Keep in mind that Brickyard 400 has 240,000 fans in 2008, but only had around 50,000 fans last year. I feel the cup series should go to Iowa, Road America, Montreal, or Mid Ohio as a replacement for IMS. 185. Since then it's been all downhill pretty much. 186. cjs3872 posted: 05.19.2017 - 9:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Actually, Canadianfan (#185), the "5 and 5" rule didn't come until 1998, and yes, the racing was pretty much terrible all season long. But what happened where the Brickyard 400 was concerned was that, in it's second year, 1995, the teams figured out that they could run a softer set-up there than they could anywhere else because of how smooth the surface at IMS is. Because of that, the cars could run lower to the ground, resulting in the birth of the aero-push, which had never seriously been a factor in NASCAR previously. The superior aerodynamics of the 1995 Monte Carlo may also have been a culprit, because in 1994, when the Chevrolet teams were still running the Lumina, and in 1996 when the aging Ford Thunderbirds dominated, aero-push was not a significant factor. When Ford came out with the Taurus in '98, the aero-push problem became permanent, a problem made worse by that season's "5 and 5" rule. But actually, the first three or four races at Indy were very good, exceeded only by the legendary finishing orders of those first few races. And Eric (#184), attendance for the Brickyard was already declining by significant amounts, even before that 2008 debacle, which was caused by the combination of the grooved track surface causing problems (and not for the first time, because the 2004 race was also a fiasco filled with one tire failure after another). The 240,000 fans meant that attendance had declined 20% since 2003 and a decrease of 40,000 the previous two years (2006 and 2007), so the popularity of that event with general racing fans was already beginning to decrease, and the 2008 fiasco simply accelerated it, but had that not happened, attendance likely wouldn't be that much more than it is now. And while they get 200-250 thousand fans for the Indianapolis 500, I'd say about only 20% are there for the race itself. Many of the others are there just for the occasion of the event, like the Kentucky Derby or the Masters Golf Tournament. But there are problems with that track that nothing can fix. First, it's likely the worst track on the entire circuit at which to watch a race, as the views have always been terrible, and it's basically been that way since the grandstands were double-decked in the late 1940s. Secondly, that track was never designed for racing, and certainly it was never designed for the racing speeds of today, no matter what kind of car is racing on it (IndyCars had problems with that for many, many years going back to the repaving of the main straightaway after the race in 1961). It was designed as a test track for the cars that existed in the era in which that track was built, which would be the early part of the last century. 187.
