Of course many people probably remember his crash with John Krebs in 94 when they both went over the tire wall and krebs went flying. And if he does, it'll be his first at Sonoma since 1999 6. Road course expert Billy Johnson also makes his NASCAR Cup debut just one week after racing at Le Mans for Chip Ganassi's Ford GT factory team, he'll run the #43 Ford subbing for Aric Almirola. Californians Tommy Regan and Kevin O'Connell are also making their Cup debuts. I think O'Connell will become the first driver to have raced in the premiere NASCAR series in the United States, Canada, and Mexico since he has prior starts in both the Pinty's Series north of the border and the Peak Series south of the border. 8. This is the very first Road Course race since 1992 without either of the two drivers who has won the most Road Courses in NASCAR history, Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart. Jeff Gordon has won at Sonoma 5 times for a total of 9 (4 at Watkins Glen), and Tony Stewart has won 3 times (Tony is a defending race winner that won't be around to defend his title) while winning the Glen 5 times for a total of 8. That's 17 Road Course wins between the two, neither one will make an appearance this race. Insane change when you think about it. 9. With DiBenedetto driving the #32 Ford that Boris usually drives in the road races I was worried Boris might not get a ride. I like Jeffery and want to see him get more experience but it is a good move for Circle-Sport Racing w/TMG to put Boris Said in the #33 Chevrolet. It seems like there are more road ringers running than in recent years. If only we could get Ron Fellows in a car. I think he's retired but he was always my favorite road ringer. 11. In 2014 he did ask NASCAR if he could run the truck race a final hurrah for his career. However NASCAR had a long-standing rule on the books of not allowing track owners to run in NASCAR races. He is committed though to bringing in Xfinity race to Mosport as soon as possible. 13. Not Sure posted: 06.20.2017 - 10:53 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Here's a funny article from ESPN (http://www.espn.com/racing/nascar/story/_/id/19687527/nascar-no-matter-how-much-want-here-10-things-see-happen-again) "Now we remember Dale Earnhardt winning Daytona in 1998 and Richard Petty edging out Cale Yarborough for his 200th win. But at the time we were all mad because those races ended under caution." All those pitcrews who went out to congratulate Earnhardt were actually really angry the race ended under caution and telling him he wasn't worthy. All those fans in the stands weren't cheering, they were actually jeering. And the fans watching at home? Let's just say a vast majority had to replace their broken TV sets. There were actual riots outside of the RCR shop. I should know since I was there. I saw Ryan McGee throw the first Molotov cocktail. There was also a crazy guy who looked suspiciously like Brian goading the crowd on with delusional nonsense. "The more cars we destroy the higher the ratings for next week's race!" Thus explaining why Earnhardt had such an underwhelming 1998 season. "Did I mention all those races I covered in the '90s with margins of victory larger than the running time of "Batman vs. Superman?" Trust me when I say late race restarts are better." The teams love the late race restarts for BS debris cautions. They especially love the destroyed race cars costing them money. Money is currently tight, but they'll pay any price to avoid a margin of victory of 2 or more seconds. "Remember all those races I had to cover with the double-digit margins of victory that were over with 20 laps to go? They were nothing compared to the points races I had to cover with triple-digit margins of victory that were over with five races to go. Instead of stressing over the fact that the Homestead finale is a toss-up, how about appreciating the fact that the race even matters. Back in the day I spent more meaningless November weekends in Atlanta than a Falcons fan." Oh boohoo, woe is the poor media reporter who had to cover a dominant car dominating, i.e. worthy champion. This reminds me of the baseball nerds who spend more time looking at the stats than actually watching the game. There's an actual race going on. Is that not interesting? All this navel-gazing at the championship while ignoring the quality of the actual racing may be why the racing is so limp and nowadays requires as many "enhancements" as it does. Are the enhancements slowing the bleeding or chasing even more fans away? 15. Kahne goes to the new GMS Cup team. Far fetched idea but GMS trades Johnny Sauter to HMS as part of the deal, he keeps the seat warm for William Byron. Bowman goes to the 88 in a prove yourself deal much like when AJ went to the 22, hopefully a better experiment than that was. Erik Jones and Kenseth swap rides, so Kenseth stays in the fold and Jones moves to where he was going to end up anyway. Paul Menard goes to the cash strapped SHR 10 ride with sponsor. RCR keeps Ty Dillon at Germain for at least the next year though, moves Brandon Jones up to Cup with cash of course from Jones. Bubba Wallace goes to the 21 with Blaney moving to the 12 in-house Penske ride. Far fetched stretch here, Danica moves to the 37 car and Buescher moves into the Roush in-house team. I am sure someone will start a small team here or there and charters will swap around, about the same fields as today. Some of this is a stretch but some of it may end up panning out. 28. Ultimate Warrior #18 posted: 06.22.2017 - 10:15 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Reason why I put Brad in the #88 next season is because usually when a owner and driver of Penske and Brad's caliber ego tend to clash they have been negotiating for a while now and still no deal which tells me someone is at a big disagreement about money or else the deal would of been done weeks ago. I recall a announcement was supposed to be a couple weeks ago still no agreement. So I'm Hendrick Motorsports wouldn't mind getting into a bidding war for Brad's services next season especially since Penske could go with the cheaper option in Blaney. But we'll see how this plays out. 31. Corey posted: 06.22.2017 - 10:30 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I personally don't see Roush going to three cars. They have such a difficult time getting sponsorship now, that I don't think they'll be going to three. Chris Buescher is either going to stay in the 37 (although they are going to lose the use of the Roush's third charter for it.) or go to the 10. As far as Brendan in the 27 goes, How much longer is his dad going to sponsor him for? And would they be willing to put together a full year Cup deal? 32. The #88 seat gets filled by Bowman. If Kahne is out of the #5, Alex could take that instead, but either way he ends up with Hendrick in Cup. B. Brad K re-ups with Penske. C. #10 is still a wild card at this point. If Danica doesn't return, SHR will be looking hard at what sponsorship the driver can bring, not just ability. Menard brings a sponsor, and should be looking at options after two *meh* seasons. Kahne doesn't bring a full time sponsor with him, but gives them a decent chance of piecing something together based on his fan popularity. Cole Custer has the insider connection, but he's not ready for Cup, and almost certainly would have to be funded mostly out of pocket by SHR. Anyone else who's in the market for a new ride is going to knock on their door, so it could be none of the above. D. If Danica does leave SHR, she will not take a full-time ride with a low level team, but may look at running part-time in 2018, similar to what Michael Waltrip did after his own team folded. Hitting just a few events would fit her schedule better & keep her in the spotlight to promote her non-racing interests. E. After another round of charter leases/sales, fields of 37 become the norm for most events at the 1.5 cookie cutter tracks. I would not rule out 1 or more races with only 36 chartered cars and no open entries. 35. Scott B posted: 06.22.2017 - 1:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "I personally don't see Roush going to three cars." This is an interesting one. The charter can only be leased for one year, so they'll either have to use it or sell outright in 2018. I agree, they aren't in a great position to return to fielding 3 teams yet. Selling it to the #37 would make sense since they have Chris Buescher "on loan" there, but it's also kind of awkward since that's not a Ford team, and might put them in a spot down the road where they'd have to pay more to re-acquire a third charter when they are ready. RPM will be getting the #44 charter back on lease from the #32 team, and they do intend to re-launch that team from early indications. The #21 in turn is currently leasing the #32 charter. They could be a potential buyer for the Roush charter, which would keep it in the "extended family," but some of the current field-filler teams will also be open to offers. Charter prices should be relatively low at the moment, since making the field without one is not much of a concern. 36. JSPorts posted: 06.22.2017 - 5:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think Brad stays put. But I think Erik Jones takes over the 20, Matt Kenseth to the 88 car. Then someone else in the 77. I also think Kahne will finish his contract with Hendrick, so he'll still be in the 5 car in 2018. Blaney to the 12 car, Menard to the 21, and my wild card here is Carl Edwards coming back to drive the 10 car. 37. My guess is that the ringers don't advance into the top 20 any point except perhaps during a sequence of pit stops or if an untimely yellow jumbles things up, and they mostly stay out of the way and out of trouble and won't be noticed very much. 61. Or if he is then he shouldn't have any points for his two truck starts this year, right now he's being credited with both. 185. If that doesn't tell you how horrible he is at road course races, I don't know what will. 187. Apparently he's switched over to running for Cup points now and NASCAR will eventually zero out his points elsewhere. 190. Mannoroth posted: 07.01.2017 - 9:18 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) With his first-ever Sonoma win, Kevin Harvick joins Kyle Busch as the only 2 drivers to win at all tracks Cup Series is competing on in all 3 series. Kyle was missing Martinsville last year, won both Truck and Cup Series races to become the first driver to do it. Harvick was missing Sonoma and he finally did it as well (he had only one shot at this every year, because there are no races at Sonoma in Xfinity and Trucks). With Harvick's 36th Cup win, he now has only 3 tracks left to win at (Texas, Pocono and Kentucky). Kyle Busch has 38 wins and only 2 tracks left to win at (Charlotte, Pocono). On the other hand, it took Jimmie Johnson 80 wins to finally stretch it under 4 remaining tracks left to win at (Kentucky, Watkins Glen and Chicagoland). Will it be Harvick, Kyle Busch or Johnson, who finally wins at all Cup tracks without the help of NASCAR (removing the winless track) like in Petty's, Pearson's and Yarborough's case? That would be an incredible achievement. 206. oldschoolracing519 posted: 07.04.2017 - 2:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Crew Chief for Brad Keselowski for this race was Brian Wilson, Paul Wolfe was at home celebrating the birth of his baby. 207.
