Danish Pie posted: 08.08.2017 - 11:27 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Probably the money aspect. Derrike Cope may not perform well on the track, but damn can he bring in sponsors, especially compared to Sorenson, who brings in nil to nothing. Don't know how much having a charter affects sponsorship money, but that would be my best bet. But then again it looks like Cope will be in the 55 at Darlington, so It's really anyone's guess. 3. 95McDowellFan posted: 08.08.2017 - 11:31 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think unchartered cars get 35% in earnings as chartered cars. 4. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 08.08.2017 - 11:57 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) "I think unchartered cars get 35% in earnings as chartered cars." Cody Ware? Odd to see Cope in the #15 and Sorenson in the #55 not that it matters. Wouldn't be surprised for Gaulding to replace one of them. I would love to see the field get to 40 but I really don't know where the 40th car would come from. The MBM #66 won't run because xfinity is in mid-ohio and they run the #13 and #40 xfinity teams. Hope the #51 actually shows up because haven't ran the last couple races. I wonder who will drive it? Cody Ware, Timmy Hill, and Josh Bilicki are running the xfinity race, B.J. McLeod is not running the xfinity race but will probably be there running his team. Maybe Stephen Leicht gets the call out of nowhere like he did at Pocano? Maybe Gray Gaulding since he's not in the #15 or #55? Or they could go with a guy with cup experience already at Michigan for the truck race like Joe Nemechek, T.J. Bell, or Travis Kvapil. 6. Kahne drives for one year under his Hendrick contract and then it's up to Kahne and GMS to sign another contract for 2019+ if both sides want to stay together. I think Gallagher takes oven the #23 in 2019 and Kahne if he stays drives the new second car (#25? #9? #33?). 23. Do you mean run it clockwise? That would not work - Cup cars are very specialized to run counterclockwise, you'd have to build completely new cars to go the other way. Or run the regular cars, and watch them go very slow while the drivers screamed about how badly they handled, which wouldn't be a lot of fun. (the local track used to occasionally run the street stocks clockwise. That class wasn't allowed to make suspension modifications by rule, so the clockwise race always outed a few cheaters. Other than that, tho, clockwise races are just gimmicks). 39. possum posted: 08.12.2017 - 3:33 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) @34 - historically the Cup series was for full-size cars, and there was a wheelbase rule which didn't allow "pony" cars - the shorter wheelbase cars ran in the "Grand American" series. You can ask Bobby Allison how those cars compared to Cup cars... In recent times the size of "stock" full-size cars and pony cars has converged, and NASCAR's wheelbase rule has significantly diverged from production cars. Plus NASCAR designs all the bodies now, so there's really no reason not to use a Camaro or Mustang name - there's no aero advantage to the sportier car, since the race body has no connection to the production car. 40. Anonymous posted: 08.13.2017 - 6:59 pm Rate this comment: (2) (3) To anyone wondering, pieces of a blown tire can cause severe damage to a stock car travelling at 210+ mph. For example, see Sam Hornish Jr. at Atlanta in 2015. He struck tire bits from Austin Dillon's blown tire, which punched a massive hole in the front of his grill, damaging the radiator. And those chunks were about the same size as the ones the came off of Logano's tire. Debris can cause serious damage to these racecars, so when NASCAR sees it, they throw the caution to clean it up and ensure that nobody has their race ruined because of a little piece of rubber. The fact that there are people here who don't understand how debris can damage these cars is mind-boggling. And before you ask, back in the day the cars weren't built super-aerodynamically, so debris wasn't a problem. Nowadays it is. It doesn't matter what kind or what material: Debris can and will damage these racecars. Even a water bottle or a plastic wrap can cause damage if it gets stuck underneath the cars. As for why it's a problem - how many fans, casual and otherwise, do you think saw the red flag come out and said "let's see how the ball game is doing" or "it's about dinner time" and left the race? Same thing happens every time there's a break in the action for seven laps of yellow...some portion of the audience finds better things to do. For a series that's struggling with a huge decline in fan interest, giving fans more reasons to lose interest is a big problem. 109. For the playoff races just make the final 10 or 5 laps depending on track size green flag laps. So there will be a green flag ending the playoff races. Also ensure the races go to the full distance. Since the important they have in the championship. I have my own ideas on how the points system should be arranged. However I really think the cautions need to be addressed as well as the aerodynamics of the cars. Make them the appropriate stock ride heights and motor package that you would purchase from a dealer. I.e, the ford and chevy V8s would overpower a Toyota v6 at a bigger track. Likewise a Toyota with a smaller motor might be quicker at a short track and a road course. After that, NASCAR can do whatever else it wants. 110. Joe posted: 08.13.2017 - 8:56 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Since the importance* Damn iPhone 111. Someone getting a hot dog wrapper or the like stuck on the front of their car and overheating falls into the category of "that's racing." Yellow for small bits of rubber outside the racing line = race manipulation for manufactured drama. It's actually creating more danger than the debris, because late race restarts are asking for trouble. 114. It did not pose a safety concern to the other cars whatsoever, so it would just stay. They just wanted an exciting finish, which it was, but I'll still take a real finish over one that was exciting but felt contrived. 115. Another one was to compare the ratings for last weekend's race to NBC's 2016 average for every race so they could claim ratings were up. It's dishonest and telling they resort to it. At what point does NASCAR finally realize each gimmick they introduce leads to lower TV ratings and track attendance? 123. The more gimmicks they started to add the ratings went down more. NASCAR never understands that they have a cult of fans following, not the average person watches racing. They push them away while getting no new fans so they killed themselves in the end. 131. possum posted: 08.14.2017 - 4:48 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @121 - that's a very misleading statement, tho. Sum up the number of viewers for all 16 baseball games on the TV Sunday, and compare it to the number of NASCAR viewers. NASCAR won't be the "most watched". The only reason NASCAR seems to be highly rated is because the audience for other sports is so divided. 132. cjs3872 posted: 08.15.2017 - 8:46 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Not to be a messenger of bad news, but I saw pictures of the unveiling of the car Danica will drive in the Southern 500, which is a version of the car Dale Jarrett became one of the dominant forces in NASCAR in during the second half of the 90s, and just looking at the pictures, I was shocked to see just how terrible Robert Yates looks as he's battling cancer. All race fans, myself included, wish the best for him, as he's one of the true gentlemen in all of NASCAR history, but I must say that I don't think he's going to make it to his own induction into NASCAR's Hall of Fame next year, and I think that would be a terrible shame if that comes to pass. With NASCAR struggling to even have competitive races that don't have late-race restarts, not to mention the demise of it's overall popularity, that NASCAR needs more people like Robert Yates, who is the embodiment of what a Hall of Famer is, and a lot of the younger generation coming into NASCAR, both as competitors and fans, may not have any idea of just who Robert Yates is and the impact he made on three generations of NASCAR racing, from the 1970s through into the 2000s. And Yates may not be the only forgotten contributor to the sport, which includes those that are active in the sport today, like current car owners Jack Roush and Richard Childress, who contributions to the sport for the last three or four decades may be forgotten to those just coming into the sport long after Roush and Childress have seemingly ceased to be perennial challengers, because for more than 20 years (around 30 for Childress), they were among the elite power brokers in the sport, but seem relegated to relative obscurity now, if for no other reason than the fact that they're not the flashy team owners, nor are they up front that often any more, but like Bud Moore and Junior Johnson when they were coming into their own as elite team owners, both Roush and Childress have had an enormous impact on the sport, something that may become forgotten in the next few years as they continue to struggle. 133.
