Many of the drivers will again be running retro paint schemes for this event featuring classic looks from years past; teams were specifically asked to run schemes from the mid-to-late 1980s if possible here and many are. I think Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is also running one of his own schemes as a throwback; his #88 Nationwide Insurance Chevrolet has been painted in what I believe is his old ACDelco colors from when he won his two back-to-back Busch series titles in the late 1990s. There's are least four Earnhardt cars in this race; Austin Dillon and Ryan Newman are both running throwbacks modeled on ole Ironhead's Wrangler car from the 1980s (without sponsorship from the jean maker) and Jeffrey Earnhardt is uniquely running a throwback to the Intimidator's one-off in the green Lowe's Food car he raced in the 1989 Daytona Busch race after he flipped in practice and borrowed Greg Sacks car (Hulu probably wants a green car and hey, someone already did a Harry Gant #33 for this race before). 4. They have so many schemes to choose from (silver select, Wheaties, Peter Max, Taz, etc.), and they use the same exact scheme on two different cars. Not to mention that I have seen at least 5-10 throwbacks to Wrangler schemes over time (Sr. ran one himself in the 1999 Winston, Earnhardt Jr. in the Nationwide race at Daytona, Jeff Earnhardt last year, etc.) 17. chaseliott24fan posted: 08.29.2017 - 7:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @16 Overuse of Dale Sr. 1986 Wrangler scheme 18. jason posted: 08.29.2017 - 7:10 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I wish Harvick would run a yellow #4 car to pray tribute to Wilson/Irvin/Marlin/Hamilton. 19. I wish though they would do away with the 88 and not the 5, take some of the pressure off of Bowman next year by "retiring" the 88 car. They need to just let teams run numbers that are available. I would love to see someone in the 28 the 8 and then the 88 next year. No one will touch the numbers or people have holds on them, that's dumb, let new people build a legacy. 23. The fact that Chase may not score a win in the #24 may be a disappointment. He must at least ONCE. Come on Chase, let's go! You are indeed the last of the young guns who isn't a rookie anymore to yet win a Cup race! 26. Evan posted: 08.29.2017 - 10:08 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) This is a move I kind of figured would happen sooner or later, but Sam Hornish drove the number 9 when Chase came to Cup. But now with it available to use, I am okay with Chase emblazing it on the side of his car. But to me, a number is a number and they will be driving Camaros next year, so Chase will be going back to his XFINITY number and where he had his success in. Maybe it will translate to more wins. #24 with William Byron is all right I guess, my only question is will the #88 change? That seemed like a Junior only deal. 27. JSPorts posted: 08.29.2017 - 11:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Actually, Hornish drove the #9 the year before Chase was a rookie. The number was available for Chase to use (Petty even said so), but Hendrick opted to keep the 24. The 88 will not change, it's already been confirmed that Bowman will be in a car #88. It's about time Chase got to drive the #9, but I'm disappointed Hendrick won't have the #5 anymore. That's been Hendrick's number since 1984 (34 seasons)...it just doesn't seem right if another team runs it. I wonder if Kahne will go to LFR & bring the #5 with him? 28. Fre======Ferret posted: 08.30.2017 - 5:26 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) My tho9ughts on Chase running the 9 are simply this: Yes, it's his father's number along with 94...but......I somehow don't think it'll bring back all of Bill's fans, especially if Chase doesn't instantly go out and win the Daytona 500, and a title in his first year and given how HMS is.....I just think it is adding more pressure on Chase that, for whatever reason, he hasn't lived up to. I think as with Dale Jr, there's a lot of people expecting him to be Bill 2.0 which is patently stupid given that Chase is in a whole different era. 29. chaseliott24fan posted: 08.30.2017 - 6:26 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) It would disappoint me if Chase didn't have at least one win in the 24 before season ends 30. Mile501 posted: 08.30.2017 - 8:13 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) I think Chase Elliott has pretty much lived up to the expectations so far. If you compare him with Jeff Gordon's first couple of years, Elliott actually has a higher percentage of top-5s and top-10s, and he has done it in a more competitive era. No, he hasn't won yet, but we're also at a point in NASCAR history where winning a race is not only harder than it used to be, it is also sometimes more random, due to an increase in late-race cautions. NASCAR cares a lot more about "excitement" than they did when Jeff Gordon first entered the sport. So I wouldn't hold the lack of a win against him just yet. He runs up front a lot, and similar to Kyle Larson, I think once he finally gets that first win, more will quickly follow. 31. RaceFanX posted: 09.01.2017 - 9:04 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Carl Long was going to have a throwback paint scheme for this race but the team is running on a shoestring budget and had to cancel those plans for financial reasons. In a brilliant piece of irony he was going to have his #66 Chevrolet done up in a variation of the flame K-Mart paint scheme Darrell Waltrip drove during his final season in 2000; the same one where he had to buy out and race Long's car in the Coke 600 after failing to qualify so after DW raced his colors Long would get to run his here. Darrell tweeted that he loved the look of the car on Twitter and thanked Carl for choosing it but it was not to be. Granted I guess his car still somewhat counts since his normal livery is that green, yellow, and red one just like he was using in the late 2000s. There is still a DW-themed entry in this year's race as Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. is running a variation of Waltrip's mid-1990s Western Auto scheme on his #17 Fifth Third Bank Ford. That was a sharp looking car in its day with Stenhouse's version using the features of the scheme in a white, green, and various shades of blue variant in the natural colors Fifth Third has instead of running a perfect copy in Western Auto's white, orange, black, and gray colors. Stenhouse also ran an older 1970s DW paint scheme in this race last year. 48. In the scale of things Cup teams pay for, it's about the cheapest piece. You'd think DW could have ponied up the money to let Long run his throwback scheme once he learned of Long's financial issue. I know Denny won in the XFINITY series the previous day and they had winners who won in throwback schemes Elliott Sadler won the previous year in a Dale Jarrett throwback, but this one is the first to win the Cup Series. When Denny unveiled the scheme, he kind of allowed his softer side to come out remembering the legacy of the "Flying 11" and when he allowed that side to come out, it seemed to bring out something in him, because Hamlin missed his pit and a lesser driver would have folded, but Hamlin didn't give up the fight and was able to Chase down Martin Truex, who could not hold on to his car and he eventually cut down a tire and hit the wall. I have to take my hat off to Denny Hamlin in this one, he actually made a mistake and corrected it. 209. Texas had 4, Richmond and Michigan had 2, and Atlanta, Martinsville, Kansas, Dover, Sonoma, Pocono (2nd), Watkins Glen, Michigan (2nd), and Darlington all had 1. 13 of 25 races have had 0 debris cautions. However, if you treat the stage 1 and 2 (and 3 for Charlotte) cautions as debris cautions the number is 2.7 or 0.2 higher than the 2005 high and nearly double last year's 1.4. 211. Win encumbered for Cup series and Xfinity series, even though he won't get points for that series. Also, Dale Jr.'s car had loose lugnuts on the car, and will lose his Crew Chief for Richmond. 214. Can anyone explain why? 216. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 09.06.2017 - 10:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "There's one issue about the Hamlin situation I don't understand. Again just a guess. 217. Pepperidge Farms posted: 09.07.2017 - 8:00 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Remember when NASCAR used to DQ drivers who cheated? We do. 218. If he had 29 wins, I bet he would race hard to finish his Cup career with beautiful number of 30 wins. But he has just 26 wins, so it doesn't matter if he retires with 26 or 27 wins... It's just a number, anyway. 219. Say Truex hadn't scrapped the wall and finished second. This would be a huge slap in the face for Truex because of Hamlin's encumbered win. Especially now with the Playoffs having stage points, it just makes the most since. Hamlin should just be the last finisher on the lead lap. 220. He might know about some part in his car that isn't legal (it's easy to do it before the race), but lug nuts are entirely different league. That's why NASCAR doesn't care much, if you have one lug nut not properly secured - people (even professionals) make mistake and DQ the driver of the car for it is way too strict. DQ them for some illegal part in the car? Fine, no problem. But if it's a lug nut issue, give them just a penalty, because the tire changer screwed it up. No DQ is necessary in this case. 221. possum posted: 09.08.2017 - 11:22 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) @220 - so what would your plan do for a situation like Hamlin's? No illegal parts on the car, just a truck arm shim mounted improperly. Could be intentional, could just be sloppy work in the shop. Either way Hamlin doesn't know. (for background here - to minimize friction, the U-joint angles at each end of the driveline have to be equal. That's adjusted by shimming between the truck arms and the rear end housing, to rotate the rear end to the desired angle. Hamlin's car had shims mounted in such a way the rear end could have moved on the truck arm, which could have been an advantage (it's basically rear-steer, which used to be a common suspension tuning parameter, but which NASCAR now regulates). So possibly an intentional suspension mode, possibly just sloppy installation of the shims). BTW, my solution to the problem would be to get rid of all the penny-ante rules NASCAR has implemented in the last 20 years. If there's no rule to break, no need for penalties. 222. I also wish the cars were more like the cars that are driven on the streets today. That said, if the 11 team broke the rules, they deserve the penalty, regardless of whether or not Hamlin thinks he gained an advantage for it. I also don't think the penalty takes away from the fact that Hamlin drove a heck of a race to catch Truex even after his mistake getting to pit road. I really enjoyed that race. 223.
