Probably Gray Gaulding will be in the #55 Premium Motorsports Toyota.
Also, I think Pat Tryson should be listed as crew chief for the #55. I
don't really see any way we get to 40 cars for this race. The #66 team
won't run it because xfinity is in Kentucky. Only possible(but highly
unlikely chance is if a new team shows up like the BK #93, the Circle
Sport/TMG #30 or a Derrike Cope-owned car.

I think Derrike was supposed to run this race, but since he and Premium
have split, his only likely chance of racing is in the 51

I find this hard believe that many people don't realize is that Alan
Gustafson has made every single start in the Cup Series as crew chief
for Hendrick since the 2005 Daytona 500 (459 races ago). Sunday's race
at Loudon will be the first race he's ever missed in his 13th season as
crew chief. Talk about an ironman streak coming to end that started over
12 years ago!

My dark horse picks for the 51 (have heard nothing on social media) are
Josh Bilicki and Stephen Leicht. Both have Cup starts this year and no
Xfinity race to work around.

11. Kyle Busch has a new crew, remember? They'll cause another pitstop
issues for him and he won't win again despite being one of the best
cars. And I think Truex learned his lesson not to win again in the same
round, because it's not necessary - when you really need that win, it
doesn't have to come and you can say goodbye to your Chase hopes.

Glad to see Cody Ware stayed "done with the sport."

Rick needs to cut his family ties and get his sorry ass-son out of the
51. I know it's a crapbox and a finish in the Bottom 5 is considered
status quo. But at least put someone in the car who can run 12 laps off
the pace without getting in the way and doesn't accuse one of the more
popular underdogs in the sport of adultery and get salty for quite
literally no reason.

Timmy Hill is the best driver they have had in the car all season, and
he hasn't driven for Ware since Charlotte. Still don't know why that is.
He got consecutive Top 30 finishes, and they haven't put him in the car
any week that he isn't driving for Carl Long. He should get a medal for
guiding that car to 28th and 29th two weeks in a row. Put Timmy back in
the car.

Kyle Busch wins his 8th pole of the year. If he keeps this up, (next
race being Dover, he won a pole back in the spring there), he could
easily win 10 poles in a single year. Haven't been done since Ryan
Newman's Rocket Man era back in 2003!

There was a moment of silence before the start of this race in honor of
the late Ted Christopher. The Northeastern racing legend died in a
private plane crash a week before this race. Many of the cars also have
stickers to honor him for today's race.

There's a wreck on the last lap of the stage. Kevin Harvick slid off
turn 2 onto the backstretch and it's chaos in the smoke. Kurt Busch hit
Harvick and Jeffrey Earnhardt rear-ended Busch. Martin Truex, Jr. and
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. spun but then rear ended each other while trying to
straighten out and drive off. Kyle Busch got through it.

Kahne blows a tire, stops on the track, and waits for a gap to come onto
pit road. Stopping on the track brings out a yellow and now that the #5
is in the pits it looks like the car has a serious suspension failure in
addition to that flat.

NASCAR is not pleased with that move and Kahne is being held in the pits
for intentionally causing a caution.

NASCAR playoffs... lol. Final fall race at New Hampshire and honestly
it's for the better. This track produces no good racing at all. It takes
drivers about 15 laps to pass each other and once you get clean air you
won't get passed unless a caution flies. I can't blame people for not
showing up to these races, was there anything interesting at all?

This race was a microcosm of the whole season: Kyle Busch and Martin
Truex combined to lead literally the entire race, except for a token lap
led by Larson under caution. See, a non-Toyota led so there's totally no
unfair advantage!

I do agree. But i'll simply add this. When people go too a sporting
event (NASCAR, NFL, NHL, NBA) they want too accomplish 2 things. 1. too
escape everyday life for 3-4 hours. 2. Too have fun.

When the things they want too escape come into said sporting event then
those people have the right too change the channel and get up and leave.
NFLs TV ratings are already taking a hit and so are the NBAs. the pocket
book is next.

That is all I have too say.

You make it seem like he lived up to the hype of "Concrete" Carl... I
haven't heard that name in years and he only won at Dover once (2007) at
the Cup level. Jimmie Johnson is miles better than Carl at Dover.

That's because we're no longer in the "Chase for the Sprint Cup" era.

Winning the Playoffs in the Monster Energy Cup Series seem more fitting
for Kyle Busch.

more than Martinsville.

Yeah, interesting how the #15 finished only 3 laps down (on the same lap
as the #43--RPM must have had a horrible day speed-wise), while the #32
and #83 were 6 and 7 laps down and #33 was apparently 5 laps down at the
halfway mark. I hope they can keep it up throughout the rest of the season.

The #83 is probably in the greatest danger. They aren't entered for
Dover. This will be the third race they either haven't entered or
entered then withdrew from this season.

The #32 and the #33 do have some sponsors, so they are just walking the
tightrope of needing to do well enough to get them to renew, but not
being funded to the point where they could even finish on the lead lap
on a regular basis. They don't seem to be in the circling the drain
mode, though.

#32 was running with Sorenson, Almirola and LaJoie up until the last 20
or so laps, Matt must have had some problem or ran out of fuel.

No mention of the great comeback from Stenhouse who came two laps down
to come back and pass some chasers? he is now tied for 12th with one of
his better tracks going into the Round of 12.

Nope, that was all Sprint Cup. With the new primary sponsor for the Cup
series, it's Playoffs now. With the introduction of stage racing it's
entirely different now.

Shouldn't Kurt Busch and Kevin Harvick have completed 149 instead of 148
laps, since 150 was the target for the second stage?

@110, Kevin and Kurt were tail end of lead lap when accident occurred, I
think that's why they only completed 148 laps as they were coming around
to start lap 149.

The leaders were on Lap 150 and came upon the wreck. Busch and Harvick
were only on their 149 lap when the accIdent happened. So they only
completed 148 laps.

108. Okay, maybe the name for those final 10 races is different, but I
don't think this playoffs are too different from the Chase. It's still
based on the Chase and its playoff system. The only thing that's new is
that stage racing.

So it's Chase/playoff and Kyle Busch has 2 Chase/playoff wins while
being in the Chase/playoff.

So can someone explain these Charters to me?

Does the finish of a Charter this year determine the payout the team
gets the next year? That would make sense considering everyone is saying
the 32 will get more cash next year based on the 21 running their Charter.

You can only lease a Charter once every 5 years, so there is talk that
Roush isn't ready to expand so the 16 Charter that is with the 37 will
come back and they will lease them the 6 or the 17 Charter next year.
Why not sell the 37 a Charter and have writing saying they have the
rights to buy it back, rather than do this lease crap every year?

@116 - yes, exactly, the payout each year for a charter team depends on
how well that charter finished the previous year.

As for why Roush doesn't sell with a "buy back" clause, I'd guess it's
because they're afraid that a clause like that isn't enforceable. NASCAR
put some restrictions on the charters which basically say they can
rescind them and reissue them at any time for any reason they like. So
Roush probably figures it's safer to keep ownership and lease, rather
than sell. Of course, once each of their 3 charters has had a turn at
being leased, they'll have to either run 3 cars or sell a charter.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the charters this offseason.

This year, Furniture Row Racing has a Charter for its second team, the
No. 77. This team will not run in 2018, so they will either lease or
sell that charter.

Richard Petty Motorsports is leasing the No. 44 Charter to the No. 32
team of Go Fas Racing in 2017. Since Petty will not run the 44 in 2018,
they will either have to sell the charter or use it for the 43 car and
lease the 43 charter.

Roush Fenway Racing is leasing the No. 16 Charter to JTG Daugherty
Racing's newly formed second team (No. 37) in 2017. They will either
have to sell the charter or lease one of their other charters and use
that one.

Go Fas Racing is leasing the No. 32 Charter to the No. 21 team of Wood
Brothers Racing. Go Fas will have to use their charter next year or sell it.

Front Row Motorsports is leasing one of their Charters to TriStar
Motorsports for the 2017 season. That charter will either have to return
to FRM or be sold for 2018, though they could use that charter and lease
the #34 or #38 charter.

The teams with charters for next year are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, 11, 13,
14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 27, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 38, 41,
42, 43, 44, 47, 48, 77, 78, 88, 95

The teams that plan to run full-time next year that don't have a charter
are: 12, 21, 37

The teams that own a charter currently and don't plan to use it in 2018:
16, 44, 77

Of course, there are other teams that could run full-time that don't
have charters or teams that may not use their charters. But it seems
like it would make sense for RFR to go ahead and sell the 16 charter to
JTG. RPM could sell their 44 charter to WBR. FRR could lease their 77
charter to Penske because it wasn't leased this year, and they've said
they're interested in running a 2nd team sometime again in the future.

It was leased in 2016. That was the charter that Premium leased to
HScott for the #46 car that year. Therefore, it can't be leased again
until 2021.

@122, 123 - I think a change of ownership resets the leasing clock.
There may be something in the rules that you have to run a charter at
least one year before leasing it, I'm not sure. Even so, the #77 would
meet that criteria.

I beleive Penske is looking to buy a charter for the 12 team, and I
suspect it'll be the #44 (since Penske and Petty have an alliance). I'm
under the impression the Wood Bros are happy to keep leasing.

Good question.

Although I'm not for sure if it has happened since, I can tell you that
Dale Earnhardt led 262 laps of a 312 lap race at the next to last race
of the 1990 season at Phoenix while Rusty Wallace led the other 50.

Earnhardt won the race regaining the Winston Cup Points lead over Mark
Martin (six points) going to the last race at Atlanta in which he would
go on to win his fourth championship after a classic battle with Martin.

It also happened in 1982 in Nashville when Darrell Waltrip won the race
leading 419 of the 420 laps, while Harry Gant led the other.

The 2000 Loudon race is somewhat of an outlier. Jeff Burton lead all the
laps but technically there was a lead change. Bobby Labonte started in
the pole.
