So essentially, anyone that doesn't make the top 4 to Homestead, has a shot at finishing 5th in points? 5. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 10.03.2017 - 5:00 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) NASCAR has released the 2018 rules package. Overall downforce for the cars is 1650lbs. 120lbs less then this year. One rear gear for all tracks, minus track repaved or changed. Spoiler remains the same 2.375in tall by 61in wide. No rear steer remains. Smaller aero fans on the corners of the cars. Front sub frame rules modded too reduce areo development. At superspeedways no ride height rule. Plate size (7/8 of a inch) remains the same. Also no more rear shock and spring rules. IDR (Incident Data Recorder) will be added and powered by the cars battery. Letting NASCAR watch a crash before it happenes. Teams only have 13 engines too run with next year but can choose what races too run them. They will be sealed too prevent tampering. Back up cars must be unloaded with an engine. That is all. 6. Chase24Fan posted: 10.03.2017 - 5:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Some pretty big changes. 7. Also no ride height rule at plate tracks yet they want to discourage aero development? I'm not sure if it's my sleep deprived mind but I just feel that's horribly counter productive... I like the IDR, it's how long since other series have had similar systems in place, if it helps safety I'm all for it The 13 engines for 30+ races, not a fan of it, that's creeping toward F1 type engine restrictions and hurts the smaller teams potentially Smaller fans on the corners, by that do they mean the canard type bits that stik out on the corners? Less downforce yet the spoiler remains the same? Hw? Okay how's that work then? Unless they're slicing it off all the 200X F1 style aero appendages that, frankly, need to go off the cars anyhow 8. I just feel the radio coverage flows better honestly and you get a better feel of the race without jumping around with onboard feeds, though that may just point the finger at the networks for how awful they cover the sport IMHO 9. Unless the stage and playoff points carry over to next year, the four championship drivers will not have the need for them in the best-finisher takes all format. I see how they could affect the non-chase drivers and 5-16 in the chase, but we all know the TV won't care about anyone but the championship 4, respectively so. 12. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 10.03.2017 - 8:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "though one rear gear is, basically, one locked final drive ratio, correct or am I reading it wrong?" That is basically what it is if I too am reading it correctly. "Also no ride height rule at plate tracks yet they want to discourage aero development? I'm not sure if it's my sleep deprived mind but I just feel that's horribly counter productive..." According too NASCAR it is too increase the take off speed by about 30mph. Therefore making it harder for the cars too blow over or something. "The 13 engines for 30+ races, not a fan of it, that's creeping toward F1 type engine restrictions and hurts the smaller teams potentially" "cost saving" means "Teams will spend their damn money anyway." "Smaller fans on the corners, by that do they mean the canard type bits that stik out on the corners?" Maybe the brake fans or something. Who the hell knows what goes on underneath those cars. "Less downforce yet the spoiler remains the same? Hw? Okay how's that work then? Unless they're slicing it off all the 200X F1 style aero appendages that, frankly, need to go off the cars anyhow" Most likely underneath the cars is where the downforce is reduced. Junior said that teams are 'tricking' the underside of the cars too get more downforce. 13. Ferret posted: 10.03.2017 - 8:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Somehow I doubt the cars can be made to take off at higher speeds without a redesign of the cars however as has been seen at plate tracks before though... Also the final fall oval race for now unless the schedule changed....again, last I checked in May this event would swap to the infield roval course. Also, yeah,, is it just me or is NASCAR snaking toward a spec formula appproach with the rules? 14. Jonathan King posted: 10.03.2017 - 8:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Changes always happen in NASCAR, I am too lazy to care about this crap. But we shouldn't be worried about the cars, but who will drive the cars. But, to give my input on the engines, I think that that is a great move because not only does that save money to build new engines, but also if a chaser blows an engine during the chase, it will be interesting to see how that affects them throughout the playoffs. But one thing that I don't like is trying to not make the cars flip over with a lower weight, trust me when I say no matter what you do, NASCAR, you can't prevent a car flipping over, no matter how hard you try. 15. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 10.03.2017 - 9:20 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) "Also, yeah,, is it just me or is NASCAR snaking toward a spec formula appproach with the rules?" Xfinity series already has composite bodies. If I remember correctly a few of the cars in the last race were composite bodies. ARCA runs them and they are supposed tamper proof and that any tampering is easily found. Next year Xfinity will run all composite bodies next year. Cup will have them in the not too distant future. "But one thing that I don't like is trying to not make the cars flip over with a lower weight," You misunderstand. They are getting rid of the ride height rules, nothing too do with weight of the car itself. Cars will still weigh 3300lbs. 16. Leo posted: 10.03.2017 - 9:30 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) "Less downforce yet the spoiler remains the same? Hw? Okay how's that work then?" Spoilers don't create downforce, they reduce drag. 17. JSPorts posted: 10.03.2017 - 9:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This isn't that drastic a rules change. I think something that would help NASCAR a lot is to go to rules that massively cut costs. This would help make racing less of a sponsor-driven business, because it could be affordable for a lot of owners to come race who may not have been able to previously. 18. Ferret posted: 10.03.2017 - 9:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ah I always thought the spoiler created some form of downforce on the back of the car, though granted I'm probably thinking of the Gen4 ars and pre-COT and going by info from 2006 and before...that being said I do think they need to figure out a good aero package that does three things 1. Allows less aero sensitive racing 2. Makes it so the cars don't flip over as easily 3. Looks good on the track Also cutting costs, yeah, like that'll happen...much as we want it to...I wish it would however 19. rm posted: 10.03.2017 - 10:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Going back to the 51 team...I think the only other race Ray Black Jr. has lined up is Texas. Never turned his back on the sport despite having every reason to do so after a controversial penalty that would have put any other owner in his position out of NASCAR entirely. He did what he had to do to keep his foot in the door to be an Owner again, and he continues to bring two or even sometimes three Xfinity cars to the track each week, and more importantly the Cup car any weeks he can. He is also putting a second Cup chassis together for Martinsville, so MBM will hopefully have two Cup cars at their disposal. If they both stay intact, I would love to see Carl attempt the 500 next year. Would be a treat to see him make it after so many attempts coming up short on the 2000's. @25 He was actually allowed back in the Cup garage at the beginning of 2017, he could have started running races as early as Atlanta if he wanted too. These are basically bad rules, altho very typical for how NASCAR thinks. In specific: 1650lbs is about 1000lbs too much downforce. One rear gear takes away the teams ability to tune for the track, the rule serves no purpose and should be eliminated. Same for no rear steer, the rule should be eliminated. Removing the shock/spring rules is good, no ride height is bad. The IDR is good. Limits on engines is bad (altho one per race weekend is reasonable). @12 - yeah, the ride height ostensibly to keep the cars on the ground. I don't think NASCAR actually knows what the aero effect is - Racecar Engineering did an article on their tech center a while back, and their aero program is about a decade behind state-of-the-art. @13 - spec formula? NASCAR has been a spec formula for years - the CoT is a spec chassis and body, and the engine rules basically mandate a spec engine. What NASCAR seems to be heading toward is a "crate motor" formula (which is not a good thing). @14 - you think like NASCAR: "it's all about the drivers, no-one cares about the cars". Unfortunately, ever since NASCAR started that attendance and TV viewership has been going down, so I tend to think it's the wrong idea. @16 - you're sort of wrong. In a street car, spoilers can reduce drag. On a Cup car, they move downforce (and add drag). Basically what the spoiler is doing is moving some of the front downforce to the rear. They don't create downforce in the same way a wing does. 51. possum posted: 10.07.2017 - 12:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) @23 - no, Carl Long got screwed, there was no two ways about it. He had an engine that was oversize by such a tiny amount (.009 cubic inch, or something like that) that it would be within the assembly tolerances in most series. And it obviously gave him no advantage and was an inadvertant error (especially since he didn't qualify for the non-points race that he was attempting when the error was found). This all occured during the worst of Mike Helton's "I make the rules" period, and he was looking for someone to make an example of - someone without a powerful team owner, who could make trouble. Carl fit the bill, and in consequence got screwed to bolster Helton's ego. 52. Jim Davis posted: 10.07.2017 - 4:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "...no, Carl Long got screwed, there was no two ways about it." I can't claim to know the truth but I've heard differently from sources I trust. Supposedly, the actual penalty and infraction was the tip of a big iceberg. Long was bringing cars to the track race after race that were not passing inspection and NASCAR was giving him break after break. Finally, NASCAR said enough is enough. The next time, no matter how slight the infraction, we're coming down hard. And they did. 53. How many times this year have we seen guys not take a qualifying run because they failed to pass inspection not once, but on 4 consecutive trips thru the line? Sooner or later _everyone_ shows up with cars that don't pass, either thru error or intention. No, it wasn't inspection issues (or "repeat offender") that got Carl singled out for an aburdly inappropriate penalty. It was simply that he didn't have a Hendrick or Gibbs or Penske calibre team owner to protect him. It was safe for Helton to "make an example" of him. 57. Long was a field filler. NASCAR, knowing that even the most modest fines could break these hand to mouth operations, cut these teams considerable slack. Long pushed the limits of NASCAR's indulgence further than others. He was told he had no more mulligans. "It was safe for Helton to "make an example" of him." Again, I don't *know* what the real story is. But I'm guessing you don't *know* either. I, like you, can only go by what others say. I find the account of their being much more to Long fine than this one incident much more compelling than Helton arbitrarily deciding to throw his weight around. 59. Martin Truex Jr. learned from last year and didn't win till the start of the next round. So that'll make Talladega a lot easier for him, because he's now immortal and can't be eliminated. On the other hand, Kyle did finish the race, but hit the wall, damaged the car pretty bad and nearly collapsed after the race. I'm so glad he's okay, but the damage has been done. He now has to run good both at Talladega and at Kansas to advance, otherwise no other playoff points will help him and will be eliminated. And if he crashes at Talladega as well, he's in a must-win situation on the track that was a pain in the a*s for him for a long time... 130. There is a benefit to winning more then once in a round. Those extra playoff points earned in the 1st round maybe what helps Kyle get through the second round. Just imagine it coming down to him and Chase Elliott for the final transfer spot and Kyle earns it by less then 10 points. That second win at Dover will be the reason why. 132. Mannoroth posted: 10.09.2017 - 12:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 130. Yeah, but remember that he got to Homestead on pure consistency in 2015, then won the last race along with the title. And last year, he joined Gordon, Edwards & Johnson as the only drivers that scored 9 top 10's in the final 10 races (and it could be even 10 top 10's, if he didn't boycott Talladega). Plus, he won twice in a row in the playoffs this year, which he has never done before - that is a big achievement already. 131. Yes, but winning once in each round is still the guarantee you advance no matter what. Some extra playoff points are useless, if you crash in the first race and the Talladega is the next race (anything can happen there). Like I said - if he crashes there as well, he's in a must-win situation at Kansas. That's why Truex is the luckiest driver now, because he doesn't have to care about Talladega and he's got Texas in Round 3, where he can win and advance to Homestead. And Homestead is 1.5-mile track as well, so he will be a big threat there. And especially, he played it smart and won once in Round 1 and Round 2. 133. I wouldn't doubt Truex to win at Texas (After all, I think he's dominated that track the second most times to Kansas). I am expecting the 78 camp to win it all at Homestead. The ONLY thing I'm worried about... the controversial final restart. I fear a 2016 Homestead finish will occur once again. 135. Sector posted: 10.09.2017 - 1:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) NASCAR should make it with Homestead that you still get the bonus points via WINS-only (meaning Stage Points no longer count). So he'll have a 30 point advantage over Kenseth/Elliott and 10 point over Larson/Busch going in now. They are trying hard to make these "wins" mean more and more, but by the time we get someone such as Kenseth or Elliott who goes into the final 4 winless, it's a slap in the face. At least with the guys who has been winning will have an advantage and all of these wins will actually provide some sort of advantage over the lesser winners throughout the year. 136. Here's some stats on that: They have combined for 14 wins (47%), 40 top 5s (27%), 58 top 10s (19%) and 4771 laps led (55%) despite making up only 7% of the field. They have combined to earn 139 playoff points out of a possible 272 (51%). I expect those three to make it to Homestead. The 4th driver is up in the air, but I think Kevin Harvick running well at Charlotte bodes well for him in the 3rd round if he can get there at TMS. He's generally strong at Phoenix too, so as long as he's top-10 or so at Martinsville he should be able to make the final race. 142. And that tenth race (Darlington) was encumbered for Denny Hamlin, with Kyle Busch finishing second. Stretching back to Indianapolis, Martin Truex and Kyle Busch both were taken out on a restart, clearly were the class of the field that race. It's clear who the dominate drivers are. Kyle Larson, in this case, is pretty much in the same boat as Jeff Gordon were back in the 90's vs the Fords, only Jeff Gordon was way more dominate. 143.
