As the entry list now shows, Justin Marks will make his first non-road course start in the Cup Series. He attempted the Daytona 500 in 2015, but didn't qualify. Both of his prior starts were at Sonoma. 5. Timothy John Balser posted: 10.10.2017 - 11:32 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ok why is there no race entitlement sponsor yet? It'll be a HUGE upset. Hahaha. I'd love to see an underdog win this race for sure. Anyway, I think this will be the last best bet for Dale Earnhardt Jr to score his last win. Don't think it'll happen. I think we will see more than 75% of the chasers run in the back till the end. Realistically, I think Matt Kenseth will win this one as a throwback to his last race here with Jack Roush by winning, winning his last Talladega start with Joe Gibbs as well. 10. A favorite I can think of without a win is Chase Elliott (as he is the only Playoffs driver remaining without having a Cup win as of now) I also wouldn't mind seeing an underdog win his/her first Cup win. Maybe Michael McDowell? Cole Whitt? Matt DiBenedetto? Landon Cassill? Danica Patrick? Or, maybe it could be someone making his/her Cup debut. Improbable, but not impossible. 11. 95McDowellFan posted: 10.10.2017 - 3:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) We still haven't had a playoff race won by somebody that isn't Martin Truex Jr. or Kyle Busch 12. It's all about who puts their car in the right place at the right time at the end of the race. Brad Keselowski - first win at Dega, is he the exception that proves the rule? Ricky Stenhouse - first win at Dega, did Keselowski break the curse? (btw, for those who don't know the background on the curse, Talladega is built on the site of an ancient Indian burial ground. But Shrader and Vickers ran for Hendrick, and it'd be hard to say that's not the best equipment. Hillin ran for Stavola Bros back when they were a top team (Bobby Allison being their other, more successful driver) and then for Felix Sabates. Parsons drove for the Jacksons, who also had top notch equipment (as Harry Gant showed). That said, of course I don't beleive their actually is a curse, I was just teasing the OP about his wish for Elliott. The true reason those guys didn't have more success in Cup is simply that they weren't all that good as drivers. 58. But as Hendrick Motorsports showed us, all the cars of the same team don't have to have the same great equipment. Vickers is another example at Hendrick - won just at Talladega, otherwise nothing at all. However, Kyle won 4 times in 3 years on a normal tracks, then won twice as many races in his first year with JGR. Same driver, different equipment. I don't need any other proof that Hendrick is playing favorites... Kyle Busch is not a bad driver and such a drastical improvement isn't possible in one season. It was the equipment that holded him back. And the age wasn't any factor in his case, because winning 8 times while being 22/23 in 2008, that's very impressive. 60. The 18 got past him, but the 77 was offset on the back of the 18 and hit him in the left-rear corner. Bad damage for the 1 & 33 cars. Pretty significant damage to the 15 & 77 as well. I agree with that policy for every track other than the plate tracks, because of the sheer number of cars that are bound to get in wrecks at the plate tracks. In this race, 40 cars started, 14 finished, and of the 14 that finished, about seven or eight of those had significant crash damage (if not more), including the third and fourth place finishers. All that needs to be said about the latter stages of this one is the fact that Trevor Bayne and Joey Logano were both involved in the next-to-last incident of the day, and suffered significant damage to their cars, yet they still wound up third and fourth, and Logano actually had a direct impact on the race's eventual outcome, helping to push Brad Keselpwski past Ryan Newman on the final lap. When things got wild in the tri-oval on the final lap is when Bayne made his big move, going from seventh to third, and nearly second, though you wouldn't have known it from the coverage, because no mention was even made of Bayne's last straightaway charge, or even that he finished third. (More attention should also have been paid to Gray Gaulding, who despite being involved in the big wreck at the back of the pack on lap 157, wound up finishing, and running with the leaders at the end in ninth place.) In the aftermath of the carnage of this race, I think NASCAR should try to take a look at a few things, including making it easier for drivers to warn those behind them, because that caused more than one incident in this race. Trailing drivers are effectively being forced to use the braille system when drivers in front of them are warning of potential danger, or trying to tell them they're planning to make a pit stop, simply because they can't see drivers in front of them attempting to signal them, and that's actually dangerous at a place like Daytona or Talladega, where the cars are bunched up for the duration of the race. And as for the late-race wrecks, I've said for a number of years that the only way to lessen the chance of that is to go to a PACER light-type system where drivers would not be allowed to bunch up during caution periods, something USAC did at Indy in the 1970s. What would happen is that, when a caution comes out, displays would signal a number to denote seconds (and possibly even lights below the number display, which would indicate fractions of seconds), which would keep the field frozen in place at caution speed, but not allow stragglers to catch up, thereby reducing the number of cars in the big pack up front, which in turn would limit the ferocity of these huge crashes, and limit the ramifications. You'd still have these crashes, but the impact they'd have would be lessened because fewer cars might wind up being involved, and there would be no impact on the quality of racing, because you'd still have the packs of cars racing for position. Another thing that would help would be a return to single-file restarts on the plate tracks (I prefer they do away with the double-file restarts all together), because single-file restarts would give the drivers more room to operate, and some of those wrecks near the end either don't happen, or at the very least, take a little longer to materialize, if for no other reason than that single-file restarts actually spread the field out enough to make it much more difficult to cluster the field up, which is why the wrecks involve so many cars. 248. With today's LED technology it could be shatter-proof, so no extra tire cutting debris in a wreck. Turn it on with a switch on the dash, automatically turn off when the driver shifts to 2nd in the pits. Pass thru penalty if it's turned on and the driver doesn't pit, so no-one plays any games with it. As for the PACER system, that was a huge failure (you may have noticed it's not at Indy now, and hasn't been for eons). A bad idea doesn't become a good one just because time has passed, it'd still be a failure. I agree with you on the single file restarts, both specifically for plate tracks and as a general thing. NASCAR worked well for years with lead-lap on the outside, lapped cars on the inside; changing to double file just created new problems without actually solving anything. 279. cjs3872 posted: 10.16.2017 - 5:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @278, you won't get any arguments from me that the PACER light system was a failure at Indy, though it did accomplish what it was designed to do, which was to slow the cars down to under 100 MPH when there was an incident on the track (because they did not really slow down that much under caution prior to the installation of the PACER lights in 1972). The problem came about when teams and drivers figured out ways to circumvent the system. Bobby Unser was one of the chief culprits, because he figured out that he could save (and even make up) time by making multiple pit stops under caution, because of the fact that there was no pit road speed limit back then. He made up half a lap in the 1974 Indianapolis 500 by doing just that, and made numerous pit stops during the long caution for Tom Sneva's crash in the 1975 Indianapolis 500, though his final pit stop nearly proved costly when he passed A.J. Foyt while leaving the pits under the caution that originally came out for Gary Bettenhausen's suspension failure (he gave the spot and lap back to Foyt just before the rains hit). But I think a PACER system could work at Daytona and Talladega today for the very reason it didn't work at Indy back in the 70s. Such a system could be enforced today, and enforcement of the PACER light system was always a big issue back then. But with much of the field bunched up at Daytona and Talladega, should a car get behind, it can't use the caution to get caught back up. In addition, the pit road speed limit would prevent teams and drivers from using the loophole in the rules USAC's teams found in the 70s, which was to gun it down pit road, top off the tank, and get back out, possibly ahead of where they were prior to the pit stop, thus actually gaining time by pitting. But Daytona and Talladega are the only two tracks where this idea's even viable, because of how the field is bunched up for the entire race. It's a terrible idea everywhere else or just the reasons that brought about it's extinction in 1979. That, plus the fact that Indy decided to join every other oval race, and bring a pace car out during caution periods. And yes, I never agreed with the concept of the double-file restarts, but one thing NASCAR wanted to do was to make sure the lead lap cars always started in front, something that didn't always happen prior to the adoption of the double-file rule. Sometimes lapped cars would start ahead of the leaders, and they always mingled with the leaders on restarts, and that frequently led to trouble with lapped cars taking lead lap cars out or wrecking in front of the leaders. And on some tracks, because of how they restarted, the lead lap cars were actually at a disadvantage because they started on the wrong line for the track they were racing at. But I have never agreed with the wave-around, either, because that gave drivers laps back they really didn't earn back, thus often making a day's worth of racing and putting cars laps down valueless because the wave-around would get cars free laps back. 280. Tommy Joe Martins did an article for Jeff Gluck. Discusses the numbers of how money is split up. Will not bore you with all of what was said but i'll just show the numbers. TV Deal: 10 years at 8.2 Billion$$$$$ Yearly payout. 820 million Who gets what: NASCAR: 10% (80 million) Tracks: 65% (530 million) Teams: 25% (200 million) Split amoung the top 3 series (changed in 2015 of which I can't find certain % but it did change). Teams do make more now then they did but it really isn't much more. Theory split by TV ratings: Cup 2.8, Xfin 0.8, Truck 0.4 Cup 70, Xfin 20, Truck 10. ^ Again just a another of splitting it up. Not that it actually happens that way. Tommy also did checklists for Cup, Xfin and Truck. But I really don't think it is accurate. It also doesn't include the Charter stuff. All in all, teams still relay on sponsers for most of the money, TV is next. Maybe that is way 'ride buyers' are a thing. 289. I didn't write it correctly - only Larson and Truex had the chance to score 10 top 10's before this race, they both failed. So no one will make it this season, but these two along with Keselowski (whose streak ended at Charlotte) still have a shot at 9 top 10's to join Gordon, JJ, Kyle Busch and Edwards. This time, it should be correct. 290. Dion posted: 10.18.2017 - 7:50 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Anyone else notice Gray got a top 10 in Cup before Ty Dillon? 291. You're right that those tail-end cars often got in the way of the leaders, but getting around slower traffic is part of the skill of race driving, and I'd much rather watch that than a restart where the lead cars just gradually space themselves out until they're all a second or so apart, which is what typically happens now. As for lead lap cars being at a disadvantage, there you're flat wrong. All the lead lap cars starting in the same line means they're all equal - no advantage or disadvantage to anyone. A huge problem with the double file restarts is that at most tracks, half the field is at a disadvantage, which is why we see silly games being played coming out of the pits. A system where 2nd, 4th, 6th is penalized with respect to 3rd, 5th, 7th is simply a bad system, and it would be even if it's susposed benefits weren't illusory. 293. JSPorts posted: 10.19.2017 - 12:03 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm in favor of single-file restarts but allowing wavearounds. No lucky dog though. Something NASCAR has looked at in regards to giving one line an advantage or disadvantage is the "cone rule" commonly used at short tracks across the country, where a cone is placed in the track and every odd position gets to go to whichever side of the cone they want, leaving the even position car in the other lane. I think this would be a step in the right direction. 294. Corey posted: 10.19.2017 - 7:42 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The only race I can remember where lapped cars starting ahead of the leaders caused trouble was the 2004 Spring race at Dover. This is the one where they wrecked going into 3 on the restart and caused the Big One. 295. cjs3872 posted: 10.19.2017 - 3:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @292, on certain tracks, lead lap cars were at a disadvantage with the old restart rules. At places like Martinsville, Bristol (before the 2007 reconfiguration), and other tracks where there was no workable second groove, lead lap cars were at a considerable disadvantage on restarts because they were stuck in the wrong lane, and could easily get turned by cars on the inside, simply because of a lack of racing room. And Corey (#294), that incident at Dover certainly may have been the most obvious where lapped cars tangled right in front of the leaders, taking out many of the leaders, but there were certainly other incidents caused by having lapped cars in front of the leaders on restarts. One that comes to mind happened a month later at Chicago, when Tony Stewart dumped Kasey Kahne on a restart. That incident happened because Kahne had lapped cars right in front of him on that restart. 296. possum posted: 10.19.2017 - 9:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @294 - yeah, it did happen, I'm not saying it didn't, but it wasn't very common. Really, it wasn't very common to have tail-end cars in front of the leaders period. You pretty much had to have a caution come out in the middle of green flag stops, and when that happened the cars in front of the leader where just as likely to be faster as slower. @295 - there's no disadvantage in that example you give. First, second, third, fourth, they're all in the same line dealing with the same situation, no-one is at a disadvantage. Where there's a disadvantage is when 1st, 3rd, etc are in one line, and 2nd, 4th, etc are in the other. 297. cjs3872 posted: 10.20.2017 - 5:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @295, what I was getting at was that the lead lap cars, as a group, were at a considerable disadvantage on those restarts at certain tracks against the lapped cars because of the line they were in. And that meant that lapped cars would actually get in front of the leaders because they had the preferred lane, and would split up the leaders for that very reason. And every once in a while, one of those lapped cars could actually cause a wreck with a lead lap car (or vice versa), simply because of a lack of racing room. I remember races where two or three cars would get in between lead lap cars on restarts because of the lead lap cars not being in the preferred groove. That's one thing that was fixed when the rule change was made having all the lead lap cars start in front of lapped cars, but starting them in single-file formation is better than the pot luck that comes with double-file starts at certain tracks. 298. He received fairly significant right rear damage when McDowell and Whitt went for the same space and crashed while 4-wide. He then narrowly missed the next accident - he's listed as being involved, but it sure looks like he never made contact. Gaulding was nowhere to be seen in the pack when the big one broke out. He dodged the next two wrecks in the smaller pack by being in the back & then losing the draft, and came home with a top ten. The bigger miracle was probably that a BK Racing car got a top ten. 305. He went on to make the worst mistake of his career and crashed, with Erik Jones as the innocent victim. As Kyle Busch accurately said, "Thats the stupidest thing I've ever seen him do!" The next week, Jones repays the favor by losing his car when both he and Jamie were in the top 5 at Kansas, overcorrecting (Jones once had a huge problem with overcorrecting whenever the car stepped out) and wadding up 10 cars. McMurray finished 12th in the standings, his 7th time to finish the standings between 11th-14th. 309. From 2012 to 2016, we had 1 race with 25 or less drivers finish the race. Since the caution clock was installed in 2017, we've had 8 races with 25 or less finishers. Most of these DNF's were crashes. That 1 race in 2012 with just 24 finishers had a ton of mechanical problems and over 115 laps during a green flag stretch were run under green, where cars crashed because they ran out of fuel. Nowadays, wrecks happen for stage points, driver mistakes, or overaggressive racing. It's getting to the point where if I keep seeing wrecks over and over again, I just turn off the TV because it gets to be embarrassing. 310.
