Just because a fan doesn't see it, doesn't mean something isn't happening. TV coverage sucks now a days. Too be honest, I wish NASCAR could create their own channel because I really think they could do a better job. Or get PRN or MRN channels of their own because I've heard nothing but great from those stations. Racing is fine but how it is covered is terrible. Proably the only way too see everything is go too a race yourself. As someone who has, TV doesn't do a NASCAR race justice at all. 14. NASCAR supposedly had a shot at getting its own channel in the mid-2000s when the sport was still booming and FOX supposedly wanted to revamp SPEED Channel into even more of a NASCAR channel than it already was but it never quite came together. These days while the Big 4 sports all have a channel I'm not sure NASCAR has enough pull to make that work. I mean SPEED itself has been defunct for years. I do miss 1990s coverage because it seems there's a bit too much focus on the leaders of late. Back then IIRC and am not just looking back through rose colored glasses (which I might be) if the top-10 were spaced out they'd flip back and show the battle for 14th or something to keep you interested. 16. Rexrobe posted: 10.19.2017 - 2:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) For the last 15 years or so, the TV networks have collectively forgotten that race fans simply want to see racing. Televising motorsports doesn't have to be hard, just show us the best competition. Each race has it's own story to tell that plays out on the track as the race unfolds naturally. If race fans really cared about the pre-scripted story lines and talking heads, we would just watch the Young and the Restless and be done with it. But instead of that, we have ultra-tight closeups of the leader while the announcers drone on about their script that was decided in the production meeting three weeks ago, and everyone wonders why the ratings are down year after year after year... 18. No, they haven't forgotten that. They've just decided not to broadcast to race fans. They're broadcasting to non-race fans, completely oblivious to the fact that non-race fans aren't watching the broadcast. Why both FOX and NBC would be such idiots as to broadcast to people who aren't watching, and ignore the ones who are, is a mystery beyond my solving (in NBC's case it's even more mysterious because they don't do it for Indycar broadcasts, which are actually quite good). 20. Danish Pie posted: 10.20.2017 - 8:25 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) @18 Whether its the 51 or the 66 that DNQ's mostly depends on who the driver is. If it's Cody Ware in the 51, you can put your money on the 51 not making the show. But if B.J. McLeod is in the Rick Ware car, it could be close. Keep in mind also, this is StarCom Racing's first race. It's very possible they could flop hard and miss the grid entirely. 21. Last start by each number: #00: David Reutimann, Homestead, 2011 #09: Landon Cassill, Charlotte, spring 2011 #07: Robby Gordon, Bristol, fall 2010 #02: David Gilliland, Homestead, 2009 #08: Terry Labonte, Homestead, 2009 #04: P.J. Jones, Watkins Glen, 2009 #01: Regan Smith, Homestead, 2008 #06: Sam Hornish, Jr., Homestead, 2007 #0: Mike Bliss, Homestead, 2005 #03: Butch Leitzinger, Watkins Glen, 1994 #05: Ed Ferree, Watkins Glen, 1993 Kind of interesting that the final start for 9 of the 11 numbers came at either Homestead or Watkins Glen. Of course, this makes sense. Homestead is the last race of the season, so if it was a full-time car number's final year, they would have their last race at Homestead. Also, some of these were run part-time by teams that ran the number without the 0 in front for a future ROTY candidate at the end of the year, often ending at Homestead. And as for Watkins Glen, there were some road ringers who drove in just the two road races, often (again) with teams whose normal numbers were the same but without the 0. Since the Glen is the 2nd road race, their seasons (and their number's season) ended there. 26. NewGuyOnTheBlock posted: 10.20.2017 - 9:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Truex on the pole. A team can be assigned a 1, 2, or 3 digit number. Once assigned a number, teams can keep it for as long as they continue to "use" it, where "using" a number is basically up to NASCAR's discretion. Established teams have preference in requesting numbers (not a rule, just the way NASCAR works). So the upshot of that is, that teams that show up just to run a few races, like running an extra car for a "ringer" at the road courses, or running an extra car to get a young driver some experience at the end of the season, tended to end up with 3 digit numbers. NASCAR rules also say you can only have a 1 or 2 digit number displayed on the car. So teams with 3 digit numbers simply leave the first digit off. Thus 101 becomes 01, 102 becomes 02, etc. If there's a conflict (e.g. if there was a 13 and a 113 entered) the higher-numbered car has to switch to an "open" number (i.e. one not entered in that particular race). With the number of car owners willing to attempt a NASCAR race having fallen so far (I doubt as many as 50 different cars have been entered this year, whereas not so long ago it would be 90 or more) I doubt we will ever see 3 digit numbers used in the future. 31. I don't know why they'd have 3 digit numbers, since neither the #66 or the #75 has been used for several years. I'd also make an exception as far as 3 digit numbers go for the #100. People have a special fondness for that number, so seeing it used in future (as Starcom is) wouldn't surprise me. 33. Do you think we'd still have stages without having the Chase? I think we'd all agree that Truex has benefited the most from the stage format, so if we got rid of that he'd probably loose the most points out of any driver in the field. Larson's blown engine today probably would have crippled him under a season long points format, but he'd still probably have a chance at the championship instead of being eliminated like he was today. 144. Look at the HMS crew the last few weeks, it's been not the best, apart from the 24, if this happened 5-10 years ago, chevy would've bitched and complain about it like they did to ford back in the 90's. Every manufacturer bitches about the others, it's not gonna change if all of a sudden Ford wins all 36 races next year. Toyota spends a lot of money, and they can do that. It's because they can't stand seeing a "foreign" manufacturer dominate when 1) These cars are hardly stock, 2) Chevy and Ford outsource their production, and 3) Chevy and Ford could get back on top if they actually put more time and money into their program. 149. cjs3872 posted: 10.22.2017 - 9:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @104, the thing about the huge crash started by Erik Jones is that what happened to start the wreck is systematic of the young athletes across the sporting world, not just motorsports, and that is that they try to make the "hero move", instead of the more pragmatic thing to do. In this case, whatever happened to letting the car spin out when it got sideways to that degree, instead of trying to save it when it's obvious he isn't going to. If he lets the car spin out of the way, and there was plenty of room on the inside to do just that, instead of overcorrect, as he did, he could have just limped around to get tires and fuel and get back into the action, instead of wrecking himself, and about a dozen others, because that was a Talladega-sized incident on that restart. And it's not just Jones who does this, because most of the younger drivers are guilty of this very thing. The way Jones overcorrected is how Jim Malloy (1972) and Gordon Smiley (1982) were killed at Indy, how Danny Ongais had his huge crash at Indy 1981, and exactly what happened to Michael McDowell at Texas in 2008 or '09, when he had his enormous crash trying to qualify there. And there are MANY other examples of this kind of crash where a driver overcorrects a car needlessly, and winds up causing a major crash. 150. Sector posted: 10.22.2017 - 9:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "I'd do the calculations, but can't find the amount of stage points they've collected." You'd have to go through each racing page and calculate every time Truex finished in the Top 10 in stages. Have fun with that (It's the opposite from position to points to provide you the proper calculations; Winner gets 10 points, second gets 9, third gets 8, fourth gets 7, fifth gets 6, sixth gets 5, seventh gets 4, eighth gets 3, ninth gets 2 and tenth gets 1). Regardless, I think we'd still have stage races anyway since Monster Energy brought it up I believe. We just wouldn't have "Playoff Points." Is it Truex's fault that Larson doesn't go for stage wins? No. They're playing the system and they're playing it right. Same was said about Jimmie Johnson with the Chase vs all those other guys during his reign of terror (Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards & Kevin Harvick). We're bringing up "what ifs" now. Without the Playoffs format, Truex has a tad bit over full 2 races worth of points lead over Kyle Busch now. Thing is, everyone complains about performances not being much of an issue whatsoever and stage points offer those additional points for it. I do believe that Kyle Larson is a lesser version of Jeff Gordon to the Toyotas as Jeff was to the 90's Fords. Anyway back to the stage points; I would suggest to the webmaster that alongside the results on race page they should include the finishing positions per stages via column for those who finished in the Top 10. For example, Truex finished 8th in Stage 1 in this race, so under the S1 column should say 8th with an empty box in S2, since he wasn't in the Top 10. Blaney would have 8th under his S2 column. The Top 10 stage results under the race results is a tad confusion honestly and it would be more organized the way I suggested it placed in between Led and Points(Pts) or something. Also should Matt Kenseth should be listed as "Parked" rather than Crash? 151. And several of the 500 milers have been cut back to 400 miles, which also means 25% fewer opportunities to lead a lap. One could argue that there's more competitive cars now, but scanning over a few recent seasons versus 80's and 90's seasons suggests it's not a big difference (12-14 cars leading the bulk of the laps now, versus 10-12 in the earlier years). Conversely, one could argue that in the era of aero-push, it's easier for one driver to lead most of the laps in a race. I fear I don't feel inspired to research that one... 172. Finishing next-to-last is good (or bad) enough to torpedo a run at a championship in what's effectively a 3-race season, in this case, races 4-6 of the Chase. Remember that in 2014, Jeff Gordon finished second twice in the round of the Chase they're coming up to (Martinsville, Texas, and Phoenix), but a wreck at Texas in the race in-between, and the 36th place finish that resulted from it, was by itself, enough to knock him out of the battle at Homestead, even with the two runner-up finishes. That's why I don't like the round-by-round knock-out formula. A freak thing can knock a driver out of the championship with no chance to make up the lost ground. Why not just count ALL the Chase races after the reset as they normally would do during the season, which they used to do during most of the first decade of the Chase. That way, what happened to Kyle Larson, or any number of those involved in the wrecks at Talladega, wouldn't instantly knock them out. There's a chance a driver can recover over 10 races, but there's no chance a driver can recover over three, and the Chase is now basically three 3-race seasons followed a championship finale at Homestead. 174. racefangurl posted: 10.24.2017 - 1:22 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 165, I've been told Chase needs to let his inner beast out to play. Because only 8 drivers can fight for the title, not 12. After Round 1, there can still be some weaker drivers, who will be on those eliminating positions, so you don't have to worry that much. But in Round 3, this is where the fun ends and it's time to take it really seriously, because there are no weaker drivers. And that's the reason even Gordon wasn't safe with two 2nd place finishes (as long as at least 4 other drivers don't have one bad day as well). 177. cjs3872 posted: 10.24.2017 - 2:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I wont argue with you there, Mannoroth (#176). And had the given even a bonus for wins, Gordon's two runner-ups would have been good enough to get into the championship finale, even with the 36th place finish (remember that he won four times that season and Ryan Newman, who beat him out by 1 point, never won that season). My overall point was that the Chase is really three 3-race seasons, and a bad finish in one race in either Round 2 or round 3 can doom a driver, and that's something to watch regarding the top Toyotas, because engines failures was what knocked Martin Truex, Jr. out last year, and every now and then, the Toyota teams run into a batch of bad parts, and if that happens, especially at Texas where the Toyotas can use their horsepower advantage, then all bets are off as to who gets into that championship finale at Homestead, because Jimmie Johnson or Denny Hamlin are the likely favorites at Martinsville and Harvick and Keselowski may be the guys to beat at Phoenix. All races in the Chase should count equally, and they don't. It's as simple as that. They used to, but not any more. 178. possum posted: 10.24.2017 - 2:12 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @172 - hmm, not sure that makes any difference. Typically there's two or three drivers who lead the bulk of the laps in a season, so if the contest for most is between all Toyota drivers, or drivers of several brands, it seems to me it's the same thing. On a related note, I see Pearson lead 2658 laps in 1973, a year in which he only ran 5338 laps total. That means he led half the laps of the races he entered. We will not see that happen again. 179. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 10.24.2017 - 5:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Or with Monster Energy as sponsor, maybe they will request NASCAR to rid of the Playoffs, keep stage racing and go with a season long championship once again. "Matt Kenseth is an expert in unfairly removing competitors from playoff contention, so I can't feel terribly sorry for him." Karma is a firm believer in equal exchange. Karma will give you something but also take it back. "Kenseth said he didn't know or understand the rules. His crew chief and crew should have - that's their job." It isn't a new rule. Teams asked for it and they got. It is another case of "Be careful what you wish for." Will the teams learn? Doubt it. If I was NASCAR i'd keep doing this while laughing all the way because they aren't learning. Same for the drivers. 180. They tied the '90's drivers two more times before the season ended, but have been behind for every (points paying) race in 2018. 186. Here are the points at the conclusion of this race, before the reset (with drivers who won a race during this round listed first): 2017 Round of 12 1. Martin Truex, Jr. (2 wins) 2. Brad Keselowski -30 (1 win) 3. Denny Hamlin -25 4. Kevin Harvick -27 5. Chase Elliott -37 6. Ryan Blaney -43 7. Kyle Busch -53 8. Jimmie Johnson -57 -- Eliminated -- 9. Kyle Larson -66 10. Matt Kenseth -87 11. Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. -103 12. Jamie McMurray -105 188. JSPorts posted: 11.13.2019 - 8:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Thanks for posting. Those are difficult to find. For example, if 3 people were running in an election, and received votes tallying 40%, 30%, and 30%, then the winner received a plurality but not a majority since it was under 50%. @188 - Jayski has that data for this year, but not for prior years (as far as I can tell), so I am working on posting it here for 2014-2018. This year, NASCAR apparently started to release both versions of the standings (before and after the reset), so Jayski has those PDFs available for 2019. 190. But it was the largest 1.5 Crash I think in Nascar history. Surpassing I think Maybe Charlotte in a couple of races where'd I think 14 crashed including the 07 Coke 600. 191.
