Obviously, the economy is not as good as it used to be, and fielding a race team is expensive. Not everyone can afford it anymore. Plus, the number of cars showing up for race weekend doesn't affect the quality of the racing. 31. 66LongFan posted: 11.09.2017 - 4:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Gray Gaulding #83 Has Withdrawn According To Jayski. 40 Cars Are Entered 32. possum posted: 11.09.2017 - 6:58 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) @30 - you may think it's petty, but many of us consider the number of teams participating to be an accurate and useful metric of the health of the sport, and thus worthy of tracking and commenting on. You're correct that fielding a race team is expensive (as Junior once said, the way to make a small fortune in racing is to start with a large one). Much of the reason it's expensive is poorly thought out rule making by NASCAR (such as the CoT). Add to that the charter system, which strongly stacks the odds against non-charter teams, and it's little surprise that it's a challenge to get 40 cars. Indeed, the real surprise is that more than 36 show up. I'd argue that you're wrong about the number of cars not affecting the quality of racing. I think the arguement could be made on several grounds, but the strongest one is simply that the racing was far better back in the 80's and 90's, when 70-odd teams participated and you could expect 50 or more entries at many races. 33. 95McDowellFan posted: 11.09.2017 - 8:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #66 should be Toyota, not Chevrolet 34. Great way to start off the weekend, one in which he needs to win to make it to the championship final at Homestead. The No. 21 Ford is currently 22 points behind the cutoff entering this race, so in all reality, it's gonna take a win to get there. This is Blaney's second career pole, his first coming at Kansas back in the spring of this year. Entering this race, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex have locked up their spots in the championship at Homestead (Busch and Harvick with wins, Truex by points), so the fourth and final spot will come down to five drivers. Currently, Brad Keselowski is in with a 19-point cushion over Denny Hamlin, with Blaney sixth -22 behind, Chase Elliott seventh -49 behind and Jimmie Johnson eighth -51 behind. 37. joey2448 posted: 11.11.2017 - 4:51 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) Wood Brothers Racing had just one pole from 1985 to 2016 (899 starts). That would be Ryan Newman who made one start against Sr at Phoenix in 2000. For the other three starts against Sr. Jr 40 Kenseth 41 Ku. For many years on FOX, Darrell Waltrip compared Matt Kenseth with another driver of the #17 car, the number Kenseth carried at Roush for years, David Pearson, the grand Silver Fox himself, who ran that number for Holman-Moody from 1967-'71, winning two of his three championships in the #17. And the way Kenseth ran in the last 60 laps of that race looked like a reincarnation of David Pearson, running just hard enough to stay in front, and then when it became evident that Chase Elliott was going to do whatever he needed to in order to win, including his settling the score with Denny Hamlin in a more subtle way than what happened at Martinsville, he laid out the bait, allowing Chase to run his car into the ground when he was leading while holding back, and then when Elliott made his misstep off turn two with about ten laps left, the old fox (Kenseth) was there ready to pounce, and when he made his pass, he did so without even touching Elliott's car, and off he went to what figures to be his final victory. Another irony in Kenseth beating Chase Elliott for this win is that, on the day that Matt Kenseth clinched his championship at Rockingham in 2003, that race was won by Chase's father, Bill Elliott, which was the final win of his career, so in a way, racing and beating Bill's son for his final win may be appropriate, and in a way, basically completes the circle of Kenseth's career. As for Chase Elliott finishing second AGAIN, it's just not meant to be for him to win in the #24 car, and maybe that's the way it should be. Perhaps it's the racing gods' way of telling Rick Hendrick that he should have changed the number of the car from #24 to the #9 made famous by Bill Elliott when Chase first stepped into the car, something he's going to do next year , and which Richard Petty allowed Rick to do when he made the #9 available for the 2016 season (the current #5 is going to become the #24 when William Byron takes over next year). 189. The way things were going, even if that incident with Elliott had not happened, I'm not sure he could have held Brad off had the race stayed green to the finish, because he was going backwards while Brad was coming to the front. After that incident happened, Brad knew that all he had to do was to finish, because he knew he couldn't outrun Elliott, who would have made the Keselowski/Hamlin/Blaney points situation moot had he won anyway, so all he wanted to do was to finish with his car intact, which he successfully did. Even if his engine had quite, he was far enough ahead of Blaney in points that he would have made the championship race in the garage area. 192. I remember watching a race at Iowa in 2015 when Elliott was leading with 2 laps to go & then a caution came out. Elliott finished 2nd that day & I got extremely pissed off on Elliott's because he reminded me so much of how Gordon was late in his career, having opportunities being thrown away because of some idiot. I told myself when Gordon retires, whose been my favorite driver since childhood, that I forever stop rooting for one. Chase just so happens to tick me off of how much he keeps being shut out of a victory everytime. Is it because he's lost the will to win? Is he WAY too sentimental? Is the #24 number a curse because of how close it comes to winning more races than it originally has since 2008? Who knows, all I know is that the reason why I don't root for drivers, is because it was becoming unhealthy for me getting very upset whenever I see my favorite star get so close everytime to victory. Sure I got to see Jeff Gordon Win, but not a lot though. But I think back to 2014 when Jeff was knocked out of the championship 4 by a single point because Dale Jr won Martinsville, Keselowski cut his tire, Newman wrecked Larson, & Gordon lost his 3rd championship. I also no longer root for drivers because I want to learn about the sport even more, just relax & watch them drivers race, listen to the broadcasters (which almost no one does) & work for the sport as well. I have a passion for NASCAR. NASCAR is a sport I loved, it's why I became a Gordon fan because of his colorful schemes, his success, his foundation, and he follows me on Twitter! :) But John, I know you want me to be angry & I completely understand that my friend. But I know I'm acting like a keyboard warrior like I was in 2013, but I didn't come here to fight no one, I came here to say what I want, I have my own rights, I have my own opinions, etc. So if you want to keep pushing me around, great, whatever happens, don't you dare keep pushing my limits! At the end of the day, I'm sorry for insulting Chase, it's just that he's so amazing as a guy who hasn't won a race in his career, he might actually be the first driver in MENCS history to finish top5 in points without career win since James Harvey Hylton!! Goodnight! :') 214. joey2448 posted: 11.12.2017 - 9:10 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @90, Yeah, and while they're at it, they could just ditch the track entirely and race in a parking lot with no walls so no one will ever be at risk of hitting a wall. Since walls are so dangerous when you hit them, let's just eliminate them entirely. As far as the race today, man was it good to see Kenseth get what very well could be his final career win (although I hope not), even if it came at the expense of Chase Elliott being denied victory yet again. And for those that are butthurt over Chase losing again, get over it. The kid is talented, I GUARANTEE he will win a race in his career, most likely a lot of them. The list is long of good drivers that took a while to win their first. Bill Elliott, Kasey Kahne, Kyle Larson, Ricky Stenhouse, etc.. It'll happen, just wait for it. As for the contact between the 24 and 11 that ultimately led to Hamlin's tire going down, it is nothing. Of course, it was expected that Chase would race Denny particularly hard and wouldn't give him an inch, but he didn't dump the 11 or otherwise make an obvious move to wreck him. He just leaned on him a bit extra and pinched him into the wall. I see nothing wrong with anything that happened today. That kind of stuff was pretty normal 30 years ago. 215. If this truly is the last win, you have to take your hat off to Matt Kenseth. As long as this season has been, I will accept Kenseth winning and getting to ride off into the sunset with a win to show for the season is good for him. His win ties him with Tim Flock on the all-time list with 39 victories, something that the analysts never touch on these days. Just seeing him get out of the car and celebrate on the roof like the old days brings a good feeling to whole week. As for Denny Hamlin, he had it coming and what goes around comes around. Chase wasn't going to give an inch and neither was Denny. Now Martin Truex(the most deserving and best team all year), Brad Keselowski(this berth fell into his lap but he has been good), Kevin Harvick(The championship is there and his for the taking, all he needs is to win the race and get the right breaks), Kyle Busch(Toyotas have been strong all year and Kyle Busch has had great cars this year, its foolhardy to bet against him and I see him and Truex as the top two in this, the final race of the season. Kenseth's first Cup race was the 1998 fall race at Dover in Bill Elliott's car because George Elliott, Bill's father, had passed away during that week and Bill was in Georgia tending to that. And actually, Kenseth ran better in that race than Bill did practically that entire season, because except for a couple of races (mainly the spring race at Rockingham), Elliott was a non-factor that entire season, yet Kenseth ran second for much of that race in Bill's car only to his future Roush Racing mentor, Mark Martin, who dominated and won that race. Kenseth eventually had to settle for sixth place, the second-best finish in a debut race I can think of in modern NASCAR history, only to Rusty Wallace's runner-up finish at Atlanta in 1980 to Dale Earnhardt in a Chevrolet for Roger Penske. 221. (And I'm referring to what happened at Martinsville, not what happened at Phoenix, as well as previous run-ins with Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, and Kyle Petty, among others.) However, in Hamlin's defense, at the time of his incident with Chase Elliott, he was backsliding and those he was battling for a chance to race for the championship were all charging to the front, because at the time of his second and fateful run-in with Elliott, Ryan Blaney, who was basically in the same position Hamlin was in when the race began, was right behind him, and Brad Keselowski was just two spots behind Blaney in seventh, so at that point in the race, with no more pit stops remaining had the race stayed green for the distance, he had to race his championship rivals as hard as he could, and let the chips fall where they may. But early in the race, it was apparent that Chase Elliott was going to try to Denny Hamlin a spot in that championship race, by hook or by crook, and he showed that he would wreck him if he had to in order to deny him that spot. I referred to that incident with Elliott as the second run-in because they had a run-in while they battled for the lead early that revealed Elliott's true intentions when it came to racing Denny Hamlin, which reared their ugly heads about 60 laps from the end. So it was obvious what was going to happen if it came down to a duel between Elliott and Hamlin, though Elliott DID NOT wreck him like Hamlin did at Martinsville. But when Matt Kenseth got up to race with Chase Elliott for the win at the end, Elliott raced him as clean as he would usually race anyone else, as there was no contact between Elliott and Kenseth on either pass for the lead on the final run of green flag racing. Elliott passed Kenseth without any contact, and then with ten laps remaining, Kenseth passed Elliott cleanly, and Elliott gave him room to make the pass instead of blocking Kenseth, which he could have easily done, but which could also have led to a repeat of what happened on that restart late in Friday night's Truck Series race when Ben Rhodes threw a block on Austin Cindric and paid the price for it. I think that's also what Elliott meant in his post-race interview when he stated that he was going to race others how they race him. He'd never had any problems with Kenseth (unlike other HMS drivers, including Elliott's predecessor in the #24 car, who had numerous run-ins with Kenseth), so he raced Matt cleanly. 249.
